Having a degree in something higher than myself, I would figure he could explained what poems mean and why they were written. Instead he looked to us for the answers... Wait that is why I thought I was taking the class in the first place.. RIGHT??
A lot of reading, but a good class overall.
He didn't have time to write a scholarship letter for me. English professors work so hard, after all, right? Like the rest of the lot of English profs at EWU, he teaches absolutely nothing.
Dr. Lindholdt is a great prof! He is funny, his class is interesting, and I'm glad he taught it. Great Class!
One of my favorite proffesors of all time! Humorous, intelligent and passionate about life. Thank you for the time I had in your class. -Jeff Gramling
One of the best teachers you can find at Eastern.
one of the worst teachers ever, but eastern's stuck with him because he has tenure.
He proves that tenure is an outdated practice, and that it's abused by certain people. No other school, except for Eastern, would put up with his outrageous behavior.
I had a good experience in his class. Course work and discussions were interesting. I must warn others, though, that he plays favorites and there are stories of him being a **** jerk. Apparently I was on his good side, though. I did work hard but I also didn't rub him the wrong way.
Great job Teach
Literature Intro class.... SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO BORING but VERY easy. I never once read a single story but still could write the essays. He does require a ton of reading and writing but the workload really is not too bad. But i would reccommend williams for literature, much easier
If you keep up with the assignments and pay attention to the syllabus, its a "cake" class. Five short papers, one research paper, and a final... which was take home and more papers. And you know at the beginning of the quarter, so you can work ahead if you need to.
Dr. Lindholdt is a wonderful professor. He is fair, warm to student's needs and concerns. I will always remember Dr. Lindholdt. Eastern needs people like him.
Great teacher. I never thought I'd say that about an english prof., but Paul is great. He's very helpful and is very student-friendly.
Very helpful and unlike most ENG professors I've had, is open to new and differening points of view. Also very passionate about the subject, which always helps keep a class fun and interesting!
I took this as an Independent Learning class last summer & just recently finished. You have a year to finish it. I got 4.0, but trust me, dont wait 'til the last minute. You have to read 18 stories & write 18 essays! & write 2 essays for the final. Some stories are really long! & sometimes the question for the essay has nothing to do w/the story.
Dr. Lindholt is an amazing professor. He challenges students to think independently and to work diligently, and he roots for their success. He has a fine sense of humour and he seems genuinely committed to excellence. Simply, a marvelous professor!
Dr. Lindholdt is a great prof! He is funny, his class is interesting, and I'm glad he taught it. Great class!
This guy confuses me. He seems open and easy going, even uses very casual and racy language in lecture. However, his grading is erratic and does not appear to be related to the students' output. I think there is something to coddling a teacher?s ego and grade results.
Very helpful and unlike most ENG professors I've had, is open to new and differening points of view. Also very passionate about the subject, which always helps keep a class fun and interesting.
he's a cool teacher. knows how to connect w/ students, convey info. smart.
Totally amazing teacher! Would like to have him for another class if possible.
One of the best teachers I've had in five years of college. If you have difficulty thinking for yourself or dealing with ideas and opinions different from yours, stay away, otherwise enjoy the ride.
He really helped me become a better writer. Also, I love his class discussion format. He lets us have our own ideas.
If your not a English major NEVER take this class with him. He only cares about people who are obsessed with reading and writing. He never remembers anything at all (no memory cells left). Not clear about what is on tests!
Lindholdt is a very different kind of man, unlike anyone I've ever met before. He's a good teacher, and lets you discover things on your own while nudging you in the right direction. He's off-center sometimes...it's hard to explain, sometimes like his mind's in another world. He's very entertaining, and obviously knows and cares about his craft.
Paul is a great guy and a great teacher. He has so much to offer his classes.
Just a great learning experience. One of the few English profs at EWU who is willing to look at other points of view, and reward them based ONLY on the merit of the argument.
Tough love, man.
Paul Lindholdt is an exceptional teacher who offers excellent insight into the world of literature. He is very well educated and personable -- I greatly benefited from his teachings. I loved Fiction and hope to have him again in my future studies!
A cool teacher. Knows how to connect w/ students in spades, convey info. Smart.

I really liked this class. I took it online. I would suggest you take it from him. Its not too hard just do the work.
I loved this class! i would take anything Lindholdt teaches. One of my favorite Professors in my entire educational career.
He does not know how to teach on-line course, which is compared to other professors who teach on-line course.
Paul (he likes you be called Paul) was an interesting teacher. His mannerisms reminded me of The Joker and he sometimes mumbles random things. But, other then that, he was pretty helpful and he really knows the material.
Don't take his class! Avoid him like the plague. He is completely unfair. Told me I didn't do a presentation that I did and it resulted in a much lower grade. He also humiliated me in front of the entire class with my paper. He's a horrible prof!
plays favorites. if he doesn't like you or you don't talk a lot in class you won't get a good grade, even if your work is good. not a very fair teacher.
I took ENGL 170 online. I would recommend it to anyone that liked to read, and is okay with essays. The essays are short and easy to write. I got a 4.0 on all of them, and I found him to be accommodating, like when I was sick and couldn't turn something in on time. I wish he taught more classes on campus, I'd definitely take them.
Paul is extremely helpful and intelligent. And although he tends to teach down to a lower level, I would recommend him to anyone!
made us use Respondus LockDown Browser for the final without any prior warning. Luckily the college has a campus-wide license. He is VERY strict on when assignments are due and will lock you out from submitting them after they are due. If you turn them in by email he will dock you heavily even with a valid excuse like being in the Emergency Room
I took Dr. Lindholdt's ENGL 170 online class. It's really straight forward with three super short essays (200-400 words each) and some discussion every week and a half. He's really helpful and will answer any questions very quickly. If you can maintain perfect grammar, cite sources, and back up opinions, he'll give you a fair grade for essays. :)
do NOT take his online class. TOO MUCH WORK, and he his too hard on grading. If you want to write 16 essays and engage in teaching yourself and others on the discussion board, go for it. Otherwise take another class or take it with someone else.
I loved this class! I learned more from it than any other English class I've had. I would take anything Lindholdt teaches. One of my favorite professors in my entire educational career.
Great teacher. I took this class in my first qarter back to school after 20 plus years and learned a great deal, even managed to get an A! He is open to different perspectives and good with guidance.
Without a doubt the best teacher I have had a EWU to date. Gives you a chance to submit papers for early review. Then submit corrected paper. He is Great!!! We need more teachers like him
Some Teachers are just that good that you want to tell everyone. Dr. Paul Lindholdt is that guy! A true teacher with class and I would love to take another class with him. The class was challenging and he was there all the time to help! I'm not a paid actor... Just a student that wishes more people would use this site.
I've been in college for almost two years now and when our first class meeting ended--I said to myself "This is why I came to school". He is engaging, open minded, and encouraging. You will not regret anything you take from Dr. Lindholdt!!
Dr. Lindholdt, while being extremely knowledgeable, is more concerned with his view on the material than of his students learning it. As an education major, I would NOT recommend this class, as you will learn nothing here that you can use in your classroom. Additionally, he doesn't follow the grading scale on his syllabus, for better or for worse.
On-line course with discussion board postings and responses every week. Also, 2 essays each week for a total of 20 essays posted online. He expects you to interpret poetry as he does, and you can't interpret your way. Not recommended as a professor ever. He talks down and condescending.
Lindholdt is a difficult grader on essays. His on-line class is research intensive, but very manageable as long as you have 2-3 full days during the week. Not the best prof., but not the worst either.
Dr. Lindholdt is an amazing professor. He challenges students to think independently and to work diligently, and he roots for their success. He has a fine sense of humour and he seems genuinely committed to excellence. Simply, a marvelous professor!
This class really helped me to become a better writer AND a better reader of literature, something I did not expect when I signed up. Very knowledgeable and helpful, especially when looking at student papers with the whole class.
Paul has a great approach to teaching that makes the material accessible and interesting. His manner of speaking, sense of humor, and open mind allow all perspectives a chance to be heard. I look forward to taking classes with him in the future.

the best one I've had in a long time
Graphic Novel class was the greatest class I ever took. There was outstanding discussion, and it was really fun. The class was heavy on presenting, but there was a lot of flexibility. I feel like I learned more from this class than most of my other ENGL courses. Whether or not you're interested in comicbooks I recommend this course.
Dr. Paul resurrected Faulkner and Frost from their misty burial plots. He hacked and chopped'em up, giving us digestible morsels. The dead are greatful. The living are greatful. You'll find Dr. Paul listening to The Greatful Dead while helping a student as long as it takes, even until death do us part.
Great professor, made the class very interesting and easy to follow along. Picked awesome things to read.
This was an online class. I loved that our discussion was online and I didn't have to sit through a course because I have taken numerous literature courses (this was merely a GECR). The biggest challenge was 3 essays due every week and if you procrastinate it gets pretty stressful. Dr. Lindholdt really helped me with comma use and using research.
Paul was quick to answer questions via email, and gave great constructive criticism after each assignment. Thought-provoking assignments in the form of 3 short essays and 2 (minimum) discussion posts were due weekly, so it had a decent workload. Good teacher. Interesting course. I'd recommend Paul as an instructor for anyone wanting to improve.
A challenging professor who was clear and concise. Gave meaningful constructive feedback that I will be able to apply for many years to come.
Professor Lindholdt was professional and extremely helpful. I appreciated his teaching style and would recommend his online class. It is not easy, but anyone will come away with improved writing ability and appreciation for diverse literature.

Professor Lindholtd was an exceptional teacher and I really enjoyed his class. The work in the class was challenging and creative and Professor Lindholtd was very helpful in making me a better writer. I hope to enroll in more of his classes in the future as I am pursuing a major in English.
Paul Lindholdt is flexible and cares about his students. He expects his students to perform well, but is willing to help at any time.
Dr. Lindholdt thrives on interaction. His hope is that you will contribute, whether you like the course material or not. He is very interested in your "take" on the subject matter. He is remarkably gracious with respect grading and "misunderstandings." If you have an issue with the coursework, think ahead and inform him. Let him know what you need.
Absolutely loved the class and the instruction as a whole. While the work was rigorous when it came to reading and writing, he greatly clears ambiguities and left me with much more insight, not just from my read of the stories, but by having consistent group discussions, even insights from other students in the class. I loved it.
This teacher clearly loves his subject & is light years from burnout. He is very clear - the stumble I had was my fault, but he offered to go over my next assignment to make sure I understood it properly, which he did. He made sure everyone in class understood. I learned so much from this. He was interesting, fun, & I loved the daily poetry.
Dr. Lindholt is extremely helpful, and quite flexible. I took his class online and it is extremely straight forward. Dr. Lindholt is new to Canvas so it's good to double check grading, but overall this course is a good one. Interesting readings, and very helpful professor. Usually responds to emails in less than 24 hours.
Professor Lindholdt was very helpful throughout this class. I have learned to enjoy Literature and not be worried that my interpretations might be different than my instructor's or other classmates. I have never had a Literature class that allowed me this type of free thinking.
Great teacher! Works extremely hard with his students so that they will succeed. (I can't stress this enough). For anyone who wishes to shy away from English classes, you will come to enjoy this class!
We read lots of interesting graphic novels and everybody was encouraged to give their opinions, even if we didn't like the book we had read. The class was always enjoyable to go to everyday and every book we read provided lots of discussion. No matter what your opinion of graphic novels before taking the class, it be challenged!
I took the graphic novel course from Dr. Lindholdt. It got me to read and think critically about topics and style in graphic novels that I normally wouldn't have picked up outside the course. He challenges the students to speak freely and bring forth any interpretations they may have, no matter how different. The discussions were always lively.
Dr. Paul was always wonderful, from how he made poetry fun and exciting with lively class discussions, to answering our questions in a clear and concise manner at all times. I wasn't that interested in poetry when I took his class, but I kept the book afterwards because I LOVED the poems in it. That's really all that needs to be said!
Paul's lectures were insightful and beneficial to careers I had outside of college. He is quick to assist students and his energy and laid back personality made it very easy to work with him
Paul is a very effective professor who has high expectations from students but is willing to help them meet those expectations. He is also very kind and friendly in and out of the classroom.
Paul is an extremely effective professor who sets high expectations for his students but helps them achieve those expectations. He is also very support and caring outside of the classroom.
Dr. Lindholdt expected a lot out of the students, but was always an available resource if needed. He was clear, concise, and definitely the professor I learned the most from in the English Department.
Dr. Lindholdt made what could have been a very boring class quite interesting and fun. We did projects in this class that I have never seen done in other classes, such as making our own "edition" of a work with introduction and glosses. I enjoyed this class very much and learned a lot.
Prof Lindholdt's class was the best! He fostered a more creative learning environment than most, an encouraged diverse opinions, presentation styles, and discussion. Definitely a good professor to take, if you get the chance.
Paul was inspiring. He also our facility adviser for our Environmental Club.
Dr. Lindholdt is always willing to assist his students, both graduate and undergraduate. He also encourages his students to push beyond their mandatory coursework and into the realm of advanced scholarly research and publishing. Overall, Dr. Paul Lindholdt, an award-winning author and seasoned professor, is a vital asset to EWU.
The middle of the road rating I gave the difficulty of this class stems from fairness. The more you put into the work the more you'll get out of it. Lindholdt knows his subject well, but isn't going to hold your hand through the course. If you're willing to pay attention and learn from him, you'll benefit in the long run.
Paul taught me to read everything critically. He also introduced me to some pretty amazing literature. I took four different classes with him and enjoyed every one of them. Paul was definitely one of my favorite professors.
Paul chose the books for class very well. He had an open mind and was well-informed. I enjoyed his class.
This was the first online (with credit) course I took and I'm very glad it was with Dr L. It was this course that convinced me to pursue a degree in literary studies. He helped me see that I had a feel for language, story, and writing.
Outstanding instructor. Prof Lindholdt approaches the subject of literature with a fresh and witty perspective that makes learning a pleasure. Do not be deceived, however, his course is no walk in the park by any means.
I came to adore this class. I learnt so much, much more than I thought I would. I left it a life-long convert to environmental literature and a way of understanding the material that has been helpful ever since.
Paul Lindholdt was always very clear in what he expected from his student. The work was always interesting, provided you enjoy the topic. This isn't an easy goof off class by any means, but if you like English and enjoy learning from a professor who is passionate about his teaching then this is the prof for you.
Paul Lindholdt is an excellent instructor. His passion for the material is contagious and makes for interesting and highly interactive lectures. He is sensitive to the needs of individual students and always makes himself available for one-on-one discourse, which makes all the difference in a literature class.
Dr. Lindholt, an amazing professor whom not only knows the content he goes above and beyond to help his students. I've taken two courses and was pleased by his high standards and methods. I respect his unconditional support in assisting students in understanding the content. I'd recommend anyone taking literature courses from him.
Professor Lindholdt instruction is clear and concise. He is open to information from students and challenges us to succeed. I loved our open presentations and his feedback, as well as the opportunities that he gives outside his class. He is a professor that will help his students succeed even after they leave his classroom.
He is very knowledgable about fiction. I learned how to critically think about fiction and literature. The lectures and discussions were often engaging. I would definitely take a class from him again, if given the opportunity.
Reading selections included books with environmental themes. I learned about writing, expression, and also the natural world. These classes changed my views more than any others.
Dr. Lindholt started each class off with a poem. I loved this about him. We did a lot of student presentations which helped to learn the material better. It seemed that if you came to class, shared your thinking and did your work, that Dr. Lindholt treated you respectfully. His classroom was enjoyable.
Paul is an incredible professor. He embodies a variety of roles: teacher, counselor, leader, ambassador. I had the pleasure of having Paul as a professor for, I believe, five total courses. Although he expects a great deal from his students, he is consummately fair and demonstrates a consistent desire and ability to drive engagement and learning.

Excellent course. Dr. Lindholdt had us write papers of significant length. It was useful to be able to work on a project of considerable scope, and Dr. Lindholdt provided useful advice along the way.
Paul was great to work with -- willing to discuss and debate POV for literary interpretation and dealt w/ me as an equal in conversation. Very good.
Excellent. Best classroom experience of my college career.
One must be prepared for every class session/do the reading prior to the lecture, participate in class, and keep the focus to do well. Just apply yourself! Paul left me with phrases and advice that I will remember for the rest of my life. He presented a solid challenge, and I struggled. For me this is an indication of an excellent professor.
Paul expects a great deal from his students, and is very serious about his subject matter. The material he selected for my American Lit course was diverse geographically and culturally, as well as wide in its scope of ideas expressed in early America. Our discussions highlighted his knowledge and passion for his subject and instilled it in me.
Discussions in Paul's class are always centered around the material at hand, but he does not prevent the conversation from evolving based on student input. This helps students grasp concepts in a very organic way. He is always able to bring a new perspective to the material, and does not stifle student creativity in assessing the subject.
I also took Engl 270: Intro to Fiction and the online Engl 271: Intro to Poetry with Prof. Lindholdt. In Surv. of Am Lit II, as in the other two courses, I enjoyed Paul's style. He utilized a student-centered model of instruction that allowed us to grow as individuals and get the most out of the material by our own initiative. One of my favorites.
Excellent experience in Dr Lindholdts class!
Great prof!
Great class. Was obvious he had a connection with the material. Available for help outside of class. One of my top 3 collegiate courses: grad or undergrad.
Paul is a great professor and I learned a lot from him.
Paul is very personable and helpful. I found his insight fascinating and it helped to dive into the subject matter.
I took several clases with Paul while at EWU. He is a wonderful educator who is passionate about his field and it shows through his teachings.
I had heard a lot of great things about Dr. Lindholdt's classes before taking American Lit. II. I was not disappointed. I found his lectures particularly intriguing, as each brought new light and perspective to the literary works we covered. More than asking what we thought, he cared about what we had to say in presentations and class discussions.
Probably my favorite course that I took at EWU. This course was where I fell in love with literature. Paul is a passionate professor, and a fine writer. Also one of the most technically skilled professors I've ever seen - he can thoroughly copy edit a paper at a glance (a skill that seems inhuman when you see it at work.) Good prof = good class.
Took several classes with Dr Lindholdt. He is THE professor at EWU if you want to take an American Lit class. Very knowledgeable and approachable. Always calm and professional.
Rigorous but democratic pedagogical standards, and ultimately easy grading. I enjoyed quality group leaning.
I've taken several courses with Paul, but what stands out to me in all these courses is his approachability and professionalism. He knows his stuff and he knows how to teach it. I loved how he was able to make the course a place where everyone was comfortable, a place not where we learned just what Paul taught, but where we shared knowledge.
I needed to take this class for my BA in English. I would have preferred Form & Theory of Fiction, but I ended up with this class instead. My opinion of poetry changed though taking it with Professor Lindholdt. He made poetry fun and showed me new sides to the art. I still have the poems I wrote in that class.
Dr. Lindholdt was one of the reasons why I excelled at EWU. He is dedicated to student success, and personally challenged me take my papers to a higher level of research and creativity. He also encouraged me to present at the Creative Works Symposium, which eventually led to a number of speaking engagements. Awesome instructor and mentor!
I've taken three courses with Paul, and all of them have been outstanding. Paul is a unique and engaging teacher who draws out the best in his students. His feedback on writing is effective and accessible, and the energy and preparation he brings to each class is refreshing. Thanks to Paul, I'm a better writer, reader, and thinker.
Paul is, hands down, one of the best professors I had at EWU. He is very intelligent, and encourages you to challenge and stretch yourself; but is so personable and willing to help you succeed. You will absolutely become a better reader after taking any class from him. If you have the chance, take a class from Paul! I would highly recommend it!
Not only was Dr. Lindholdt one of my professors, we began a professional relationship that resulted in him speaking to my high school creative writing classes. Dr. Lindholdt offered a "no holds barred"attitude towards American Literature, but also strongly encouraged his students to form individual opinions through critical reading skills.
I took a seminar course with Dr. Lindholdt my senior year at EWU and it was a blast! We studied Faulkner who was very tough to read but Dr. Lindholdt valued discussion and one's personal interpretations. The content was tough but the discussions made it worthwhile

Dr. Lindholdt encouraged me to get my education even before I was enrolled full-time. I was taking an online class by him and he called me on the phone and invited me to present a paper in a class he was teaching on campus. It changed my life and my expectations as an adult learner.
This was my first online class and Professor Lindholdt made online instructions extremely simple and clear. He gave good examples of what he wanted as far as formatting and such and gave feedback on almost all assignments. Overall great first online class experience and introductory English course.
Really good guy and teacher! If you email him your paper before it is due he will look at it and give you feedback and what to fix as many times as you want. The class was very student group based for most of it but he really pushed us to work. I personally only read the readings for my group and did fine in the class. I recommend him as a teacher!
I worked closely with Paul while working on my MA in English Lit. I was inspired by his love for studying and writing poetry. He also encouraged me to work on my PhD (which I am finishing soon!). I learned a lot about teaching from him as a TA, and I use many of his techniques in my own courses. Don't miss the chance to take a class from Paul.
Paul is an excellent instructor. His expectations are very clear, and he makes his classes both fun and challenging. He is also very encouraging of students, and was always willing to sit down with me and critique my own writing, whether it was for class or not. I wish he taught more of the Lit classes at Eastern, I would have taken all of them.
Instructor was enthusiastic about the class and knowledgeable about the subject. Emails were returned in a timely manner and help was given whenever it was needed. A lot of the class dealt with student group discussions, while instructor helped facilitate.
Instructor was enthusiastic about the class and knowledgeable about the subject. Emails were returned in a timely manner and help was given whenever it was needed.
Great Professor who really takes the time to help students. I'm not a fan of English classes, but I enjoyed this one!
The graphic novel course showed me how graphic novels can become valuable teaching tools instead of just entertainment. The relaxed environment Paul encourages allowed for interesting and informative discussions from students. This course is still fairly new, so it was also fun to see Paul learning some things to incorporate next time as well :)
Dr. Lindholt is one of the best professors I had at EWU as an undergrad. He is intelligent, knows his material and expects you to learn. I respect him as a teacher because he does not hold your hand, but instead provides great feedback and is always available to help if you ask. As an online instructor he communicates well and is a nice person.
Dr. Lindholdt is an excellent professor. He is eager to help students understand every detail of an assignment. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Furthermore, his passion for literature is evident -- and his enjoyment of the subject is simply contagious. Strongly recommend.
I wasn't particularly interested in taking 520. But contrary to my expectations, this class imparted relevant information that I will use directly in my field. It was purely because of Dr. Lindholdt's contributions to the course content that it became meaningful to me. His investment in his students' success is unparalleled.
Prof. Lindholdt is a truly great teacher. His enthusiasm of the subject is contagious, and his breadth of knowledge is impressive. He challenges students to think differently & more deeply, which is always valuable. Through his self-deprecating humor you find a sharp-minded, clearly communicating Prof who truly cares about student's learning.
Very passionate and knowledgeable teacher. Went out of his way to inform students about opportunities to raise their grades AND further their academic career! Would totally recommend taking classes from him! He is an asset for knowledge in his subject and other English courses as well.
Paul has a passion for what he teaches and it shows. The class is very challenging but fun at the same time. Paul is a tough professor but very fair, and will go out of his way to help students who struggle with the curriculum.
Dr. Lindholdt is a fantastic professor who knows and teaches his content very well. One of my favorite courses I took from him was ENGL 315- Literature and the Great Outdoors. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a fantastic class that I often remember fondly. I would take the class again from Dr Lindholdt with no hesitation!
I was excited prior to taking graphic novels. However, I don't think I retained any knowledge from the class. Discussion topics often meandered from their focal point and quickly became disconnected from the day's topic. It isn't a class I regret taking and I'd recommend it, but I think that Paul would do well to keep the class more focused.
Lindholdt was very insightful during the discussions and helped me better understand the material. His curriculum was well laid-out in advance, and as long as you put in the effort, he gave you the grade you deserved.
I had fun going to this class and Paul's nonrestrictive approach allows the students to interpret literature freely! Most of the time he'll answer any questions you have via email the same day and makes himself pretty available in case you are confused about anything.
This was a great class; every class I have taken from Dr. Lindholdt has been nothing less than enjoyable. I especially enjoyed this class because of how much introspection we did through the assigned journals. He definitely catered to students as individuals and encouraged us to learn and explore our own opinions but was an attached guide.
Originally took this class as a schedule-filler spring quarter. I had already taken a lit class at SFCC, so I thought this would be a good follow-up. Dr. Lindholdt was very personable, easy to get along with, and really encouraged open discussion. Overall, it was a good class, and we read a discussed good material, but I almost wish it was harder.
Dr. Paul was extremely helpful and encouraging. I genuinely had a good time in his classroom. He is a very supportive teacher that sincerely wants all of his students to receive the highest possible grade.
Good professor. Provides lots of help and feedback if you take time to ask. Read the stories, pipe up in class from time to time, and you'll do fine. Be sure to turn in drafts of papers early. Very generous in proofreading it for a better grade. Would take him agai.
Fantastic professor. Serious about English Literature, but also serious about his students really learning, but he want you to push yourself. He has very high expectations for assignments. He spends a lot of time making sure project requirements are understood. And he always promptly replied to my emails.
Lindholt was helpful and enthusiastic about the topic while maintaining a dialogue with his students. I was lucky enough to take a couple classes from him. Gave great feedback on my papers, and kept conversation flowing during his lectures. Honestly one my favorite and most memorable profs.
Dr. Paul created a comfortable classroom environment and provided positive feedback for every student that participated. He accepts any interpretation of any story as valid as long as you can support your conclusion. I enjoyed this class immensely. I would recommend taking a class from Dr. Paul to all English majors at EWU.
This was an informative and fun class!
Dr. Lindholdt is an excellent Professor. He is very patient and encourging with his students. He open to students interpretations as long as they can support their ideas. He creates an environment where students are empowered to suceed.
He made the class a pleasure with his obvious enthusiasm for the content. Great depth of knowledge on the topic.
He's a fantastic teacher that always keeps things interesting with a lot of class conversations and debates. He's tough when he needs to be (after all, you're there to learn), and fair when he needs to be. All in all, an enthusiastic and easy-going professor.
Very passionate about what he teaches. Was always happy to be in class and loved what he did. Lots of reading involved and groups present in front of the class every day. Each group presents 4 times. Only 1 test, and 2 papers. I did enjoy this class even though it required a lot of work. I learned a lot in this class and improved my writing skills
Dr. Paul Lindholdt is an exceptional teacher—he is extremely knowledgeable and personable and a fabulous writing instructor. ENGL270 was excellent and I went back for more (ENGL343 & ENGL408). His classes are rigorous and engaging. I strongly recommend his classes to anyone who wants to work, grow, and expand as a reader and writer.
I took multiple classes with Paul during my time at Eastern and his classes were always my favorite. He challenged us to think outside the box and always expected our best work.
As one of the first classes most ENG majors take, Paul was the perfect prof to teach it. He encourages and fosters genuine discussion and analysis, and he shows sincere, contagious passion for the subject. Though class is pretty easy if you show up and make an effort, Paul still challenges you to take all of your analyses a step further.
Paul's classes center around group discussions/informal presentations and several papers. I took multiple classes from him and found each one incredibly valuable. He's a great mentor and is always willing to match the effort that you put in. He perfectly balances being personable and professional, and I recommend him to any EWU students!
Compared to other English Professors at EWU, Paul is extremely helpful. I really appreciated he was open to numerous writing styles, but still managed to help everyone improve their own individual style. He also focuses on vocab which is really valuable as an English major. Overall he is a great professor and has great character.
Excellent instructor! Lots of class presentations.
I really enjoyed the class. Paul Lindholt taught it well and made the content very enjoyable. I could see his passion for literature which made the class more enjoyable.
This course clarified my status as an academic scholar. Paul's assignments were challenging, and they made me develop my own academic voice. Through written as well as oral presentations, I was encouraged to express my own scholarly opinions and support them. Paul is an outstanding mentor as well as a challenging academic role model.
Lindholt was always a joy in the classroom. He made jokes and told stories and encouraged with a smile. He was knowledgeable and helpful. He expected a lot from his students but always gave clear instructions. He was fair in his grading. He allowed us to show our personalities in our work, both essays and presentations. Worthwhile teacher!
Don't take his online class. His grading is ridiculous. If you don't quite get something in your essay, such as every reading and questions you are assigned there are three essays you must write. But if you mess one up, your grade is cut in half. Sure he is great in class but his online class is a joke. Don't bother with it.
He is extremely fair and easy to communicate with. His honesty and knowledge makes the class fun and interesting, and he tops the list for English department professors.
Very helpful and clear explanation as well as constructive criticism. Good teacher
If you put max. effort into your assignments and turn them in on time, you will most likely do very well in the class. Professor Lindholdt is very clear about his expectations and if you have any questions, he replies within a timely manner. When you turn in assignments, he explains why you received that grade with feedback. Very good class.
Dr. Lindholdt is a phenomenal teacher. He encourages interaction and productive interruptions. He is not arrogant like other professors in the English department. He is always available for help and truly desires to help cultivate your creative thinking and writing. If you actually like literature and want to grow as a thinker, take his classes!
DO NOT take this class online. He grades unbelievable hard. If you make one mistake or leave something out then you get 50% or lower.
Paul is wonderful! I'd take every English class from him if I could. He treats his students as intellectual equals, which is so refreshing.
Lindholdt got me excited to be an English major! He is a hilarious, down to earth person, and treats his students as equals to himself. Some language he uses is vulgar, There is quite a bit of reading involved, and I HIGHLY recommend sending him multiple drafts of essays before they are due. Because of this I got a 4.0
Dr. Lindholdt is an exceptional teacher. He encourages class discussions and treats students with respect. His insights are interesting. Group projects are plentiful yet graded individually. Offers prompt and helpful email responses. If you are a serious English student andor writer looking for a patient and astute coach, consider him.
Lacks clarity in what is required for assignments. Extremely tough grader and not helpful even when you reach out to him. Frustrating class
He doesn't like to give specifics when grading your assignments. He will make comments on everything but not point out specifically what he docked points for. It's very hard to know what he wants because he will say negative things about parts of the assignment but when you e-mail him for clarity he says he didn't dock points for that.
Gives a clear idea of his expectations. Great feedback and opportunity to improve. No excuse not to get a decent grade. Passionate about his field, and open to new ways to read texts. Light but broad reading load.
Dr. Lindholdt was my first professor at EWU and has been the most influential teacher I have had for a long time. He starts every class with a memorized poem and is very inviting when it comes to class discussions and daily readings. I would recommend Dr. Lindholdt's class for any student wanting to further their interest in English or education.
Dr. Lindholdt is an awesome professor to work with and his class was great as well. He's a very honest guy, it's clear he's been teaching for a long time, and he has a genuine passion for helping others. You have to be willing to put in the work in order to pass, but it's very worth it. This is a class I would consider going back and taking again.
I have taken numerous English courses throughout my college career and I must admit that Paul Lindholdt was the best Professor I have taken. If I could have him teach all my remaining English classes I would. I cannot recommend him high enough!
Paul is very open minded which aids greatly to the discussions every day in class. He pushes students to think critically about every story read, and to ask questions they wouldn't normally ask. Debate is welcome, and paper topics are of the students choosing. Paul is straight forward, fair, easy going, and dedicated to his students.
Lindholdt was an insightful teacher who was able to guide students into developing their own ideas about the text instead of imposing his own interpretation upon them. He's a valuable resource in developing your writing skills and provides timely and useful feedback throughout the essay process if you reach out to him. Wonderful class experience!
Lindholdt is great at inspiring students to think outside the box and be creative. The class began with the phrase "There are no wrong answers," allowing everyone to be open with their thoughts. Students get to write about what they want and there are fun opportunities for extra credit. Also very helpful for writing that doesn't pertain to class.
Professor Lindholdt really made literature more relevant and accessable for me, and was a great guy to learn from. It was a pleasure to take his class, would recommend.
Dr. Lindholdt is a very nice and encouraging professor. He helped me get through some of the problems I had run into during class with support ranging from verbal encouragement to well-timed feedback on assignments and questions. He's more like a friend than a strict my-way-or-the-highway professor.
Lindholdt is an AWESOME professor. He is engaging, caring, and makes the course interesting. Invests his time into teaching proper writing skills and respects the opinions of his students. Totally recommend!
Lindholdt was always a joy in the classroom. He made jokes and told stories and encouraged with a smile. He was knowledgeable and helpful. He expected a lot from his students but always gave clear instructions. He was fair in his grading. He allowed us to show our personalities in our work, both essays and presentations. Worthwhile teacher!
One of my most challenging and inspirational instructors ever. Kind, but tough, brilliant and creative.
I really enjoyed the class. Paul Lindholdt taught it well and made the content very enjoyable. I could see his passion for literature which made the class more enjoyable.
Paul Lindholdt is one of the greatest & most encouraging professors I have ever had. He told us the first day of class that there are no wrong answers- and he meant it! As long as you could prove the point you were making, it was right. He really helped change my perspective & open my eyes. He is very smart & genuinely cares. TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM.
He is the worst professor ever. I mean it is only a 100 level classes but he acts as though it is a 400 level classes. I work my ass off for this class and pass it. Worst class ever. Never take his class and he is not that helpful too. You will not pass this class if you took it with this professor.
Do not take Eng170 online! Lindholdt is an incredibly hard grader and is very nit picky about small mistakes, but these mistakes will extremely impact your grade. He doesn't offer enough points to be able to come back from a low grade on one assignment. I've turned in countless papers for my major and have gotten better grades than this class.
Great professor. He was willing to give guidance and suggestions on papers or presentation topics and provide feedback. I would take one of his classes again.
He assigns at least 2 short stories to read for every class day. Discussions are student led. Group presentations (maybe 4), but with Google Docs, it was actually very easy to complete as each person was responsible for their own thing. If you aren't an English major, beware, as the 2 papers you do will be graded like you are!
He was a great professor. He seems to really care about his students and wants you to really think. Class is never boring! You NEED to read the stories assigned and you NEED to come to class. There are group presentations, two essays, and midterm/final. Great professor, great class.
He was very helpful and it was an easy class to take! Had a good sense of humor and only two tests, one was take home. Definitely helped lighten my load.
Dr. Lindholdt not only welcomes, but encourages, in-class discussion. Level of involvement in the class is reflected in your grade so don't be afraid to speak up. Also make sure to review your notes before group presentations and stay within the specified time frame. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone with an interest in literature.
Great professor! A stickler on MLA format though. Be very precise and do your research!
I loved this class!
I took his online class and he is not specific on how he wants the questions answered. He would also talk to me like I was basically stupid when he would critique my answers.
It's seldom that I feel like I can truly speak my mind or really engage in an exchange of ideas at school- in this class, I was able to do both. Dr. Lindholdt is remarkably open to student ideas, and very willing and patient with corrections and assistance. Plus; an organized and detailed syllabus, which he sticks to!
The WORST professor I have ever had! He is not clear at all on what he wants and he grades extremely hard with no specifics of what you did wrong. I had another English teacher help me with ALL my assignments and he would find one thing wrong and give me a 0. He also has not changed his assignments since 2012. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE!
Professor Lindholdht made me stretch myself to learn. He challenged me, and I fought for my grade. He stated what he wanted in his class, and I looked for the resources to make it happen. I did not settle for less than his expectations. After his first feedback, I knew I had to understand literature and interpret it.
Dr. Lindholdt always was willing to give me feedback on all my papers. I took this course online and he always got back to me within the hour. I recommend taking his class for sure. If you ever don't fully understand the reading, he's always willing to help you understand it. It's a lot of essays but totally do-able. 10/10 would recommend taking!!!
Through projects, i.e. annotated bibliography, Scavenger Hunt, text editing, Dr. Lindholdt allowed the grad students to explore their own areas of interest, while guiding the expected levels of scholarly commitment to a final, polished product.
This was a great class, but not easy. The course work and research requirements were intense. Professor Lindholdt was intellectual, always accessible, funny, personable, and ready to review our work in progress. The class discussions were a true highlight, and he wanted to hear differing opinions. Quite refreshing and enjoyable.
If you don't like reading or writing then DO NOT sign up for this class. He basically gives you three readings a week and you are supposed to write an essay over the three assigned readings. He is a tough grader and will mark you down for the littlest things. Discussion boards are the same way and will mark you down if you respond "too quickly."
SO FRUSTRATING I have never been so frustrated by essays before. His prompts for the weekly essays are very complicated and unclear and he grades very harshly. A comma in the wrong spot will mean a D. It is highly stressful and time intensive. He is very cool and sweet man IN PERSON but not online or during grading. Which is what matters, honestly.
Lindholdt is an amazing and passionate professor. He encourages your participation and discussion in class and is always willing to help you with your weekly papers. Regardless, he is a tough grader and expects you to put in time/effort into your assignments. You can't put this class on the back burner momentarily or you will fall greatly behind
He was an okay teacher. He doesn't post grades on Canvas which is annoying. Very little feedback is given so it's difficult to know how you're doing in the class.
I struggled hardcore at the beginning of the quarter with this online class because his grading expectations were not clear nor were they well explained in any way, even though I emailed him with questions multiple times. Towards the end of the quarter, he became an easier grader and gave good, clear feedback.
We had to submit weekly papers but he would let us submit rough drafts early to get feedback on. As long as you submit a good rough draft early and fix what he tells you too, you're golden! He's really chill in class but does like to call on people to talk during discussions.
I don't understand why there are a lot of bad ratings. He is a GREAT professor. Yes, he grades hard. IT IS COLLEGE! Don't take any English classes if you don't know MLA format. You will write ALOT of papers in this class. He looks for keywords and requires you to put some effort into your writing.
This professor assigned a wide variety of interesting writing sources for this class. He provided helpful feedback and was available outside of class.
Dr. Paul is a tough grader, but if you want to be a better writer he'll definitely help you improve your writing. He helps students hone in on what they need help on. I highly recommend him as a professor. He cares about his students and that they understand writing techniques and the readings covered.
Wonderful professor. He is willing to work with you if things come up, and if you ask for it, he gives good feedback. He knows what he's doing, and doesn't make you feel bad if you get a wrong answer. I would definitely take him again
Explains and advises on errors for every paper, but grades fair and is easily accessible for questions.
He is smart, but I'm not a fan of his teaching style
Due to reviews was afraid to take online class, but pleasantly surprised. Well organized and easy to keep up with, but you DO have to put effort into papers. Very hard grader, and low points available, if you miss anything your grade will go down significantly. Does not seem like a low level class, you have to work for it, and THINK. Great class!
I took Lindholdt's engl 170 class online. He is unspecific about his greading criteria and will mark you down on criteria you were not aware of. Once you correct these mistakes he will then mark you down on other criteria you were unaware off. He's difficult to deal with and when he responds to you he is unclear and demeaning. Avoid this professor
Dr. Pauls classes are very discussion-based. He really values your input in class. He is open-minded and absolutely loves when he can learn something from his students. I have taken 3 classes with him, as well as TAing one, and have learned so much from him. Speak up in class, read, participate, and translate those ideas to your papers!
The first time I took Lindholdt, I wasn't too keen on his teaching methods or his discussions, but this second time around, I actually enjoyed a lot of the parts that I once disliked. Lindholdt is easy to approach if you have any questions and the discussions were intriguing. I would definitely take another course with him.
His online english 170 class was ridiculous. He was very unclear with the requirements on the 18 short essays and would grade harshly. I emailed several times asking what I needed to do differently to get a better grade and didn't receive a response. Assignments are worth very few points so if you mess up on one you get screwed over.
Very easygoing!
He is a tough grader and really likes to emphasize on rhyme and meter in poetry. Also I had to write three 500 word essays each week that are only worth 4 points for the whole thing. If you have one grammar mistake he will take off an entire point. I wouldn't take the class especially if you like poetry.
He is a very nice teacher and gets back to you fast. Class is hard and boring as you are reading poems and such, but if you work hard you will get a A. If you ask him for help he will give it to you. There is no homework, just 3 mini essays (200-400 words) every 10 days. Overall, a easy class if you work hard.
Wow! Best class I have ever taken! I took ENGL 170 online summer quarter. Easy grader, explains what he expects, etc. I'm not a strong writer or reader and I received 99% in this class. I learned a lot of new concepts, too.
EWU advised me to take this course- later I found out that I already earned these credits at a previous institution. Though I dropped the course (late in the quarter), I have become a better writer and been exposed to great lit because of Prof. Lindholdt. This course is time consuming, but you are engaged and are developing beneficial skills.
Hands Down. Best. Course. EVER. The literary works read in this class are actually entertaining. Every week has three 400 word max essays on three readings. However, I entered this course knowing how to write proficiently. Lindhodlt is a straight shooter and will give straight forward feedback (Even on perfect scores !!) Seriously recommend!!!!!!!
He grades his students very harshly. He has no grace, even when people try their absolute hardest. Im a 4.0 student, and this is one of the hardest classes Ive ever taken. He will fail your assignments due to one misspelt word. When he gives you feedback its almost always negative, even when you do a good job. Success is hard to come by from him
This class is fantastic! Even though I took this online, He is always avaliable for questions *responds to texts super quickly. There is no misinterpretation. The course is perfectly organized and is very direct. I could not have asked for a better experience. He is my first professor to actually give 100%'s still give fine tuning feed back!
If the professor sees that you care as a student, he will help you be more successful in his class by providing constructive and educational feedback.
Dr Lindholdt seems to genuinely try to be nice but comes off fake or creepy sometimes. His social behavior queues are a little warped but he means no harm by it. He does like to pat himself on the back frequently in class .
Prof. Lindholdt is a fine teacher. His excitement for subject drives the class, and his knowledge is impressive. He challenged us to think differently, to challenge his authority, which is always valuable. He clearly communicated and truly cares about his students' learning.
Dr. Lindholdt is one of the best professors at Eastern Washington University. He cares about his course content almost as much as he cares about his students. Dr. Lindholdt's students are his main priority. Every class period he holds is centered around student learning, and he makes sure everyone is heard. He is one of the most caring professors.
Dr. Lindholdt is a great professor who makes you feel heard. I loved this class. The subjects were difficult to think about because they were sad and challenging, but it was also valuable and enlightening.
Dr. Lindholdt is a great professor! He really invests in his studentsespecially the grad students. I have taken both undergrad and grad classes from him. He is very encouraging and willing to help you when you feel overwhelmed. His classes are tough, but worth the effort. I highly recommend taking a class from him!
I really enjoyed taking Introduction to Poetry with Mr. Lindholdt. His assignments were engaging and enjoyable. His feedback was also excellent and I felt that, in comparison to other courses, I was actually able to improve my writing because of his feedback.
This class was almost 100% group presentations. We had 5 groups who each did 5 presentations each on a different story. Paul doesn't do much as far as teaching goes. The class ended up being students arguing and talking over each other constantly about subject matter that barely matters. If you want to learn about literature take a different prof.
He once graded me down a whole letter grade for a single comma splice in a five-page paper. He's not difficult because he has high expectations for his students, but because it's impossible to figure out what he's going to dock you for next time. Insults his students in every comment. Unclear expectations. Avoid like the plague.
He is a good professor that liked to let students control the conversations. He will have you keep editing your paper so you get a good grade to make sure you are writing properly.
Paul is a TOUGH grader. Strict on attendance too. Textbooks are required for his class. There are 4 presentations, 2 tests and 2 papers for this course. The tests are easy, he gives you the material. They are also based off the readings and presentations in class. Pay attention to class discussion too. Do ALL of this and you will succeed.
Professor Lindholdt's comments and attention to detail when correcting essay's was highly valuable. I struggle with punctuation and tend to use comma splices, or write run on sentences. But his clear corrections enabled me to see exactly where I was going wrong and I made a lot of progress in improving my punctuation use in his class. Thank You
Lindholdt was great. The class consisted of three readings each week (plays, poems, and short fictions) which we had to write short essays on (200 words max per story). We also had discussion posts on the readings each week. The final and the class itself were chill. Professor was encouraging and knowledgeable. Great class if you enjoy literature.
You have to really understand the pieces of literature that he assigns, otherwise you will miss the point entirely that he's trying to teach and you will get a poor grade. When I asked, he gave good feedback on what to do and what not to do, and helped me format my papers. I do admit I took this class during a pandemic so I have a unique situation.
Professor Lindholdt is one of the best instructors in the English department at EWU. If you have the chance, you should take him at least one time. I learned a lot through his instruction, which is all that I can ask from a professor. He works with students individually to improve their level of writing. He is truly caring and amazing.
This class tested my writing ability and I truly appreciated the dialogue and discussion around the materials.
Professor Paul Lindholdt is someone who helps you learn and grow as a writer. I have taken many of his classes and still continue to learn in each one. He is, in my opinion, one of the best professors in the department. He is definitely one of the professors that you need to take if you want to truly grow as a writer.
My writing skills were less than proficient when I started this course, and Dr. Lindholdt let me know it; I felt defeated. But throughout the course, his feedback and encouragement brought me from getting 1.5/4 on papers to 4/4. He gives amazing feedback and even allows you to fix it. I have gained confidence and grown so much as a writer. 10/10
Dr. Lindholdt provides detailed, honest, and constructive feedback on each paper. I found that the readings were very entertaining and he creates thoughtful prompts that push you to be a better writer. Throughout the course I gained more confidence as a writer and I hope to have him as a professor again.
Dr. Lindholdt let me know he cared about my progress in his class, he gave excellent feedback, and he gave me a second chance when I was experiencing a lot all at once. He's a great guy and has always helped me advance my writing skills. If you struggle to do multiple weekly readings and write 1000 word essays once a week, don't take this class.
Dr. Lindholdt is the most caring professor I have come across at EWU. I was really struggling in his class at first, but he went out of his way to give me great constructive feedback as well as give me a second chance. He recognizes hard work and effort whereas most professors don't. If you are struggling, reach out to him, he's happy to help.
Professor Lindholdt is an amazing professor. He always gives great feedback and usually grades your assignments within a day. If you can, definitely take a class with him.
Instead of giving genuine help, he sends you to the writing center. Next paper I write I get a good grade, the following paper an angry and disrespectful message that I need to go to the writing center. Will make you write a long paper just to dock you for simple mistakes. Incredibly rude in every comment and message received. All during pandemic.
Terrible. Don't EVER take this professor. Rude. Gives no feedback. Doesn't teach anything. Makes you act like your stupid when you ask questions. I've always been a 4.0 student, and this is the lowest grade I've ever gotten. Avoid this professor like the black plague.
I loved the challenge this professor offered. Be prepared to read and write. There are formal weekly research papers and less formal weekly video posts on the "discussion board." I loved the assigned texts. Dr. Paul provides amazing feedback and is very supportive. Definitely take a course from him, but be prepared to think.
Dr. Lindholdt's assignments are tough yet purposeful. Be ready to read and think. Having submitted your essays on time, you will have a chance to improve your grade with feedback from the professor. Through that process, you will definitely become a better writer as well as getting good grades. Therefore, it comes down to effort.
If you want to become a better writer, take Professor Lindholdt! I took the online version, and we had a paper/discussion due each week. The readings were boring at times, but overall they were intriguing. He can be a tough grader but is willing to let you fix mistakes and give you full points.
Awesome professor for those going into an English-heavy field. Might not be preferable for people looking for an easy A for a required credit. Graded more specifically than anyone else I've had so far.
I'm a college Freshman now but I took this guy back when I was in running start at EWU and taking a class with Lindholdt was comparable of walking through the depths of a hellscape. I don't think I actually learned anything because he wouldn't give me feedback even when I asked.
You truly learn how to write well in this class. He gave me amazing feedback and would let me resubmit after fixing my mistakes. He was very specific with how he wanted things done. You need to follow MLA to a T. It helped me with my grammar and he was super nice. Very easy to work with and probably my favorite professor this quarter!
I was nervous based on the other reviews, but it was a great class. He has weekly discussions and papers, super easy. If you do a video discussion you get extra credit. Make sure to know how to use commas, tenses, and use complete sentences. Those are mostly what he grade down on. If you focus on those and do the work you should be fine.
Dr. Lindholdt is one of the most academically stimulating instructors at EWU. He challenges students to be better writers who use textual evidence in concise, grammatically correct ways. I learned to productively proof-read my essays for mistakes and discursiveness. The coursework can be tough, but you will be a better writer by taking his courses.
The class is hard if you aren't a strong writer. I recommend using the writers center on every paper. Professor Lindholdt focuses on MLA formatting and punctuation. He made me a better writer for sure, expect to put in the work if you want a good grade.
ENGL343 has a great balance of assignments that will better any writer and texts that won't submerge your course load. Paul provides clear expectations and specific feedback that he knows will improve your essays. You won't regret taking this class or any of Paul's classes. I recommend taking ENGL170 and ENG271 with him too if you get a chance.
I don't know if this is different since I'm online but this course was awful. I don't know how he is in person though.
Professor Lindholdt is truly one of the most academically stimulating professors on campus. As English majors, we often think we are the best writers; this professor will make us the best. He truly is invested in making you a good writer. You will do well in this class if you are willing to do the work. This was a fantastic class!
This course was an easier one out of the few the professor teaches. It may seem difficult to some but he is an amazing teacher who really cares about his students success in class. He will give the fastest feedback I have ever had in all my schooling, clear feedback, and a fair grader. This class, and others of him will make you a better writer.
He is tough a grader. If you take what he tells you and put in the effort, you will become a better writer. I find his classes to be challenging yet rewarding. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to put in the effort and is serious about wanting to improve their writing. Know that his class will require real effort, but it is worth it.
Dr. Lindholdt was one of the best professors I have had at EWU. I took 3 classes from him: ENGL 170, 271, and 344. Each was an incredible blessing! He shows great enthusiasm for his subject, introducing me to many writers I loved. He also supports students as writers, willingly reading my essays each week and giving me advice on how to improve.
This course does require a decent amount of reading, but the essays themselves are quite simple to complete. The hardest part for me was remembering to respond to my classmates comments, which is mandatory. Professor Lindholdt provides very good feedback on the essays and is very helpful and kind with his feedback.
Make sure to do the readings carefully and there is a final exam. But other than that he's a pretty nice teacher and gives you a lot of good feedback
This was one of my favorite classes, as someone who enjoys writing. There was a paper due each week, but the work was reasonable and a good grade was attainable as long as you followed instructions and feedback. Dr. Lindholdt was very encouraging and this class helped me become a better writer as a whole.
Avoid at all costs. Do not let the high ratings fool you. I am a history major and have written a plethora of papers with my lowest grade being an 83. This professor will find anything to mark you down for and then force you to use the writers center to finish his class. Insanely rude when giving "feedback."
Professor Lindholdt is great at giving clear directions for all of the work you will do in class. If ever there's a chance you might be confused on something pertaining to an assignment, just reach out and he will get back to you (faster than most professors). Be prepared to read, and explain how and why you interpret the readings the way you do.
One assignment per week that could be done quickly and also decent feedbacks were given quickly.
Professor Lindholdt is an amazing teacher and he knows so much about poetry! While you will have to write several short essays a week, the source material that you're writing about is so interesting! This is a great class to hone your writing, to learn even more about poetry, and to be exposed to many amazing poets! Highly recommend this class!
Amazing professor and great class! Definitely would take other classes from him!
This professor is only doing this to get his book recognized. He will find any small detail to knock you down points. Do NOT expect to get critical criticism. Once he has graded your assignment he will RUDELY tell you everything you did wrong and tear apart your writing. Understandable it was an honors class but the rudeness was not necessary.
Do NOT take this class. Requires students to visit the writer's center to pass the class instead of helping them himself. He just wants to promote his book and tells his students to leave a good RMP rating at the end of class. Is so rude and basically tells you that you are terrible and your writing is unreadable. Waste of time, learned nothing.
Paul Lindholdt is not a good teacher. This class is just for him to get money and exposure off of his book(which is mandatory for students to have). He is too hard on grading especially with every assignment being only 4 points each. Sure it's an honors class, but there's no reason for it to be this difficult. Would not recommend taking his class.
He gave good feedback, and was willing to help me further understand topics.
Horrible. Awful. Dropped the class within two weeks. Super duper nitpicky on grammar. Feedback is aggressive and borderline rude. Requires netflix for this class apparently. Doesn't feel like a literature class, feels likes a history class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Unless you want to be absolutely degraded as a person, I advise not taking Lindholdt unless you have to. I have never been one to take tough criticism in a personal way, but he isn't tough in a good way. I don't want to say exactly what he has said to me or my peers for legal reasons, but there is a reason he only teaches online classes...
He is balanced, impartial, and professional, but prepared to write!
You were both my favorite and my hardest prof!
I took Professor Lindholdt's Intro to Poetry class, and I would describe it in one word as degrading. I was warned by almost every English major student and professor that his class was the worst. He has his ideal way of interpreting things, and if you go outside of it, he will degrade your writing. He is the reason I will not continue English.
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY MASS AMOUNTS OF GOOD REVIEWS. Paul offers extra credit for those who give him a good rating on here. He is incredibly rude, degrading, and only teaches to promote his book. No one—not even his fellow professors—like him but he is super tenured. He even leaked a student's poor grades (name and all) to the entire class. AVOID.
This class was by far one of my favorites. I loved the way the course was structured. As long as you thoroughly read the syllabus and assignment questions, you should do just fine. Biggest tip though, don't forget the syllabus. It is packed full of very important instructions for papers/discussions. DON'T SKIM THROUGH IT.
I loved this course. It was my fav English class I had at university. Cannot recommend Professor Lindholdt enough. I learned so much from him!! Amazing guy
He is a phenomenal professor. I had fallen behind, and he worked with me to ensure I still passed and got my credit. Not only that, but he's a clear grader and helped me more this quarter with my writing just through his critiques.
This was quite possibly the most difficult professor I've dealt with. Unreasonably strict grading to the point where he will fail your paper if you have a few minor errors. His feedback is reductive, rude, and unhelpful. You will also be forced to use the writers center to pass (his own words). Avoid at all costs!
Lindholdt is very knowledgeable, LOVES poetry, and clearly states what he wants from assignments. If you don't write well you won't get good grades; work on your command of the English language before taking him. There's a lot of room for creative thoughts in essays.
Paul Lindholdt is hands down the worst professor I have ever dealt with. He is rude and unaccommodating. I confided personal medical details with him to explain why I missed 2 classes. He told me that if I was having medical issues, then I wasn't cut out for my program, and that I should give up on being a teacher. Avoid at all costs.
He is kind of strict about the essays but if you read the syllabus and pay attention to detail you will be fine. The material was actually really interesting and his feedback inspired me to better my writing. Overall really good course!
There was a lot of reading in this class and all the essays you have to write in 100-200 words which is pretty hard. Professor Lindholdt gives good feedback though and is willing to help a lot as long as you try. Overall a great professor and my writing definitely improved.
Every negative thing here reviewed about him is true. Imagine getting a Masters or PHD just to not do your job. His annotations are two words and go to the writers center. Also for this class he does not care at all about the substance of your answer. Only if you can write good. Will also also not accept revisions. Terrible Absolutely terrible.
would not recommend any of his classes.
You'll be fine as long as you don't make grammatical/structural mistakes you should have moved past as a HS freshman. English majors will not have this problem. Good feedback, cares deeply about literature. I don't like online courses but this is as good as an online class can get.
Personally, I enjoyed the class. Whenever I had questions, he would always respond back to me whenever he could. The assignments are separated into 6 modules, where you have to read three readings for each module and then have to write 100-200 word essays for each reading. You also get the opportunity to complete discussion board posts.
