He's an aweful teacher, NEVER take him... he fails more than half the class
worst teacher of all time...arrogant too
Total a**hole! Blatent liar! Tries to make a 100 communications class into a 400 level! Won't give you any help.
There couldnt be worse teacher. I hope he reads this and quits
He should quit he is the worst even the other teachers hate him. that says it all. and no matter how smart you are he will tell you otherwise.
this guy does suck! he likes to give his opinion a little too much. he says vague alot well i think he is vague and needs to get employment elsewhere!
he is an engaging lecturer & his classes are always enjoyable
What a bunch of whiners! Of all my classes here at ESU, his have been the most interesting and thought provoking. One of the smartest people you'll ever meet. If you don't want to have to think or be challenged, take speech comm and quit yer complainin'!
Great Teacher...great films...interesting discussions....YEAH THE CLASS IS HARD>>>ITS COLLEGEEE!!!!!!!!!!
MEAN!!!!
Yes he is a difficult prof but if you're interested in the art of film at all you will definately want to take this class! I learned so much great stuff about film, even if I did end up with a crappy grade.
He likes to give students failing grades on essays and will write unnecessary mean comments on them. Do not take his class.
if you pay attention and take notes in class, it is a breeze. i got an A on everything i wrote for his class without trying. HE GIVES THE ANSWERS IN HIS LECTURE!! he is a **** socialist, but thats another story.
Professor is either one you like or you hate.....he is an excellent professor that does not hand out a's and is brilliant with his film theories.
Prof.Lippert is brilliant. Unfortunately, he is not the clearest communicator when it comes to teaching Communications studies. Most don't like him because you actually have to work and think. His classes are ivy league level education with an ESU pric
one word...sucks.
stay away at all costs! he failed about 90% of the class on the 1st paper. i ended up dropping the class and when i did he said "good, less **** i have to grade" if you need help, don't even bother asking b/c he'll just turn you away!
Film Studies. Great class, even if you don't get a good grade you will learn a lot if you are interested!!! Difficult, but very good teacher. Every body talks bad about him because they expect a "class where you watch movies".
obviously whoever is calling him brilliant does not really know the true meaning of the word. Not to mention that he should not be a teacher if he does not want to help his students.
you watch a movie& are given 3 questions to choose from and then write a paper answering that question.you can get a tutor or go to him for help (which he says he encourages, and which i did both of) and you will fail.seems to grade on personal pref.
I gained a better appreciation for older films. Be sure to have an interest in the movie-making process. There's no discussion of recent movies. Prof. is intelligent, yet not accepting of other's opinions. Tough grader-expects a lot. Tests are impossible.
This guy has no clue how to teach. He also doesn't explain how to write the reports, and he thinks he's God (which obviously he isn't). No matter what, he's right and nothing you do is correct. Horrible teacher.
very rude
tough teacher, but he tries to get the most out of you. by no means is he a breeze, expect to work and think.
This guy is the worst teacher i have ever seen. He grades your papers like you should know everything about film and he makes you watch horrible movies. Almost every single person in my class dropped it because no one gets a good grade with him.
Students just get upset that he actualy expects his student to do their best, not just sit on their butts and do nothing and expect an A. You actully have to work for the grade, and he grades fairly
bombed the first two papers I wrote but easily made adjustments and did well after speaking to him. I love good movies but root canal is preferable to some of the garbage that are passed off as classics in here.
This Man is a horrible teacher
I have had Lippert for 3 classes and have revieved A's in all. This man has taught me more in 3 classes than all my other professors combined in my four years of school. He's an ivy league education at a state school price.
I've taken all his film classes, every one was wonderful and full of great insight on film Brilliant, funny, and interesting. He expects alot, but you'll learn so much more than just film. Caring, and helpful if your having trouble. A++ guy
Took all his classes. Very challenging but well worth the effort. You will learn alot if you work hard and care. Fair grader, gives 2nd chances on bad tests usually. Very smart man. Ivy League professor at the cost of a state school!
Great professor. Knows his stuff. It may seem hard but really if you just read and listen to his lectures you will do fine. You are aloud to rewrite all of your papers and if you ever need help you can go to him. The movies are old but really cool!
I just barely passed this course. He is ridiculus and rude with his grading. The only reason why I passed was because of his midterm. Avoid his class if u want to keep a decent GPA.
Awful
the worst teacher ever. i barely passed the class i failed every paper the only reason i passed was bc of the midterm i even reworte a paper and he failed that one 2 never take this teacher dont listen to the people who like him he SUCKS!!!!!
worst class ever!! barely passed with a C, rips paper apart horribly especially in an intro to film class. not helpful at all, told me to get a tutor because he couldn't help me. wanted to trip him when he ran up and down the aisles.
He's a jerk. I dropped because I wrote 4 papers, failed them all, rewrote everyone, Failed all rewrites. I got a B on the midterm but not worth it. He's a jerk and he fails all freshman because they aren't film majors! Don't bother taking if u wanna pass.
Not quite sure what all the negative comments are about...Lippert is great! I found his lectures to be very interesting. He doesnt like your papers to beat around the bush..just get to the point. Even if you do it wrong, he lets you re-write them!!
lippert 3:16 says i just rewrote roshamon 18 times
I can't believe people actually like this guy. He's such a jerk. He makes no sense and is so boring. His mind's all over the place and he always talks about stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the class. I feel bad for those who have to take him.
Doesn't really teach. You have to write the paper how he explains things not how he tells you. he likes to read what he says in lectures
worst professor ever! He's a jerk and has no intention in helping a student pass a class! He's rude and inconsiderate and the class is the worst class ever.Don't even bother writing a paper that would normally be legitimate. b/c it's not LIPPERT'S p.o.v.!
One of the few great professors at ESU. Forces students to look at ordinary situations from many points of view. If you're looking to expand your horizons, taking his class is a good start.
He's a very educated professor, but you need to work for the grade. His grading ways are hard, but he definetly expects the best out of you. Has a way of making you think harder than any other teacher does about films..Personally I don't like the class, but it was good to have such a good professor!
Complete and absolute jerk. I failed every paper I wrote. When I repeated what he said in class in my papers, he said I had no idea what I was talking about. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! It's not worth the aggrivation and stress.
this guy really knows his movies. he is obsessed, that's why he knows so much. he expects you to exceed well beyond your means in this class. you can do very well, or bomb out. put in the effort and listen in class...you'll do fine. if you don't have ambition, just don't take it.
How about giving a grading rubric for the papers and clear expectations?
Im considered a smart person, yet i failed every single paper. hes a jerk and doesnt help you at all. he has a stuttering problem which makes it soo much harder to understand him. when i went up to him to ask for help,he just told me to get a tutor. complete jerk!! dont take this class or have him!!
3 Words! GET OUT NOW! Do yourself a favor and do not take this class. Worst class at esu. His grading on papers is ridiculous. I had a's and b's on all my papers in highschool and i got 1 "c" out of 5 papers. the rest were "e's" before he let me redo them. I stil dont kno what i got in the class yet
GET OUT NOW!!!!
Very smart guy, interesting stuff about movies. Yeah, tough grader. Don't just summarize the plot in the papers, you have to stay for the lecture and answer the paper question. If you just think you're gonna watch movies, don't take class. If you are interested in the subject, it's GREAT.
personally, i learned a lot from this class. Lippert is a very smart and interesting man.. he does his job well. Also, gives you chances to do your papers over.. so do that!
i don't care what anyone says, this guy is a freakin rock star
Once you understand what he wants you to write, it isn't so hard. just make sure verything you write has a point. It started out tough, but by my 3rd film class with him - it was A's all the way! He definitely knows his films too.
crazy. the guy is smart as hell and lectures for the whole class. Sits in his chair for 3 hrs and talks to you without looking at anything or any breaks. Doesnt take atten and has 3 grades all sem.
His guy is an ****. The only way that you will recieve an A in that class is if you agree with everything that he says. The man talks out of his ass. That class was a waste of time. Do yourself a favor and switch out.
Lippert is THE man. His mind moves faster than his mouth sometimes & he can be a bit unclear, but he'll explain over & over again until u understand. You'll do good on the papers if u focus on the question. Stay for the lecture, and he pretty much answers it for u. He not only gives criticism, but he takes it well too. Take film classes w/him!!
He is out of control, he gave me e's on 3 papers--I rewrote them and he still gave me e's not even a d for taking the time to rewrite. He's a ****bag in my book.
Very articulate well educated prof. will make you think. You will remember him long after grad. over 10 years and when I see a film Lip is there with me.
He made me cry because I really felt I was going to fail his class with all the E's I was getting. Never got an E before. I needed his class for my major, too. Scared me to death.
If you want to do good in his class, stay for the lecture afterward. He explains the films very well. Pretty easygoing guy if he sees that you care about the class. I know this girl who has a huge crush on him. Films not bad either.
A very intelligent professor, I really enjoyed his lectures. His class is easy as long as you pay attention to his lectures. The tests are hard if you dont read the book (a mistake I made too) but overall, a fairly easy class as long as you follow directions to a "T".
He really isn't that bad... very intelligent, and VERY willing to help if you ask. Listen to what he says, then write it. If you do bad, ask him why and then rewrite it. He is very understanding and helpful you take the time to ask... But his classes are hard, and the films suck haha
great professor. movies aren't really that bad, and he explains everything to write in the papers after the film, pretty impossible to mess up. exams were hard but he curved it so that if you got half of them right, you got an A. hes funny i liked him a lot.
he teaches his class as tho it were a graduate class. he is a big **** i tried so hard in his class i even had a tutor & i still failed. it is funny how all my other classes i had A's & B's and then got an E in his class. he picks favorites and if u are not one of them then u will probably fail. aviod him at all costs!
The class is 3 hours once a week which is the good part. Most of the films are no more than 2 hours. Usually less so the rest of the time he lectures, before and after the movie. There are a lot of foreign films with subtitles which suck and are hard to follow. Most people just fell asleep. You have to write a paper for every film. 2 tests.
He doesn't connect with students at all. He doesn't even know anyones name. He gets really excited about the films its funny. The movies are in foreign languages with subtitles that you can't read. Papers are pretty easy if you pay attention after the movie. He usually explains everything and gives you ideas. Not a bad guy a little odd though.
I took both intro to film and film genres with him. He is a very smart man and knows what he is talking about, although his ideas are scattered. People who leave for the lecture are dumb; that's where the answer to the essays are! Take a nap during the film, pay attention to what he says. You can rewrite papers up to the last day of the semester
Brillant guy, interesting films and lectures. Students who fail are slow to begin with.
Good guy. Stay for the lecture's. The lectures explain everything. Stupid of the people that leave. Mid-term generally has a 25 pt curve. Read chapter 12 of the book which helps answer the final essay question on the final which he gives you the first day of class. Most people don't open the book and thus aren't aware of all the help it gives.
Dont like and dont reccomend and needs a new teaching strategy
3 hour intro to film class. Class isnt so bad because you watcha movie for most of the time..but he lectures for the rest of the time which seems like forever. Don't even bother studying for the midterm or final...as long as you get good grades on the papers you'll do fine. HE gets annoying though, needs a new haircut, and is pretty strange.
Don't get me wrong, the guy knows his stuff. He's just boring as all hell. If you feel like sitting in the same chair, listening to the same voice for exactly three hours, take him. But I don't recommend it
I had his intro to film class about 22 years ago and it is funny that somethings never change! I believe I got an A in his class because we chatted about stuff like Frank Zappa and Van Morrison. He was nice to me but his class is rigorous. Just do exactly what he says and seem like you are truly interested, it will go far.
He didn't seem like a bad guy years ago when I had him. I think I had to rewrite one paper. I got an A. He used to tell everyone he liked that they should consider teaching. Funny, I became a teacher after piddling around in communications for several years. I think if he senses you are insincere, he will grade you tough.
Very hard, very boring. Attendance isn't neccessary, but read the books!!
ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. AFTER THE TRAGIC PASSING OF MY FRIEND LAST SEMESTER I DECIDED TO TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES OVER AGAIN, HE MAY BE SMART BUT DOES NOT AT ALL CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. IF YOU WANT TO BE TALKED DOWN TO THEN DEF SING UP FOR HIM! TO BE TREATED AS AN EQUAL AVOID THIS MAN
his comments on papers are harsh. You would think an intro to films class would be sort of easy for a GEN ED! He is the worst teacher at east stroudsburg by far. He stutters and doesnt even stay on the topic. Your essays have to be about what he wants to hear, not even your own opinion. dont take this class. he should be fired.
I don't know. This class was quite a breeze for me. I found it helpful to 1. go to EVERY class 2. listen to his lectures after the movie, they are actually answering the essay questions 3. In the essay DO NOT story tell, simply give the answer, something like a lab report 4. Dont worry about midterm exam; study for finals though
Do NOT do this to yourself! Just take my advice and DONT
HE is HORRIBLE!!!! He is so boreing and horrible with his grading!! He is self absorbed and only things "his way" He will literally go on and on for the entire class period and doesn't "believe in breaks." He will make you sit there for three hours, listening to him go on and on...& when its test time he will totally be harsh. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Lippert is not a hard professor if you just stay after the film and listen to what he says. He tells you the answer to his question while he lectures. I got an A on every paper in his class. He even lets you redo it as many times as you want. People that think Lippert is hard ae the people that don't come to class.
HORRIBLE
this guys class is painful. THE KEY TO PASSING HIS CLASS IS TO TAKE NOTES DURING THE LECTURE! he usually answeres one of the questions so just write what he says down for your paper- you'll get an A you don't even have to watch the movies. on the syllabus he tells u what movies you will watch just look up how long they run for & go after.
Dont expect intro to film to be easy in the least bit. The midterm and final are impossible to study for. The questions come out of nowwhere. Good news is that he curves the tests by 50%. You MUST attend class because some of the movies are not available and he grade one out of two papers but you have to turn both in to be eligiable.
Professor Lippert is by far the best teacher I've had at esu. He is extremely enthusiastic about what he teachers and cares a lit about his students learning. It is mandatory to listen to his lectures and take notes on what he is talking about. A little perk is you dont have to buy the current issue of the text! Take film genre fall of 2010!!!!
What a horrible teacher. This class should have been fun, but he made it dreadful. He talks, or rambles, for the entire 3 hour class. I was an A/B student until his class. I have learned nothing except that I can't stand his class!!
I took a variety of his classes around 16 years ago and can appreciate them more now in my mid 30's then back then. If you show effort and research in your writing assignments, you'll be ok. The final is so ridiculous that even though I heard some had copies of the test in advance they still couldn't find the correct answers. Web barely around then
To be honest his class is pretty difficult. You NEED to take notes during class because his mid term is nothing but RANDOM questions about his lectures. READ THE BOOK. Omg i can't stress that enough. Please Come to class and do your essays. Without them...you're doomed on your final. And as for the final? Forget about it...you WILL fail. No joke.
The most difficult thing about him is that you will have to learn to think critically and analytically on your own; you can't get away with regurgitating a textbook or his lecture. You need to form coherent thoughts on fairly abstract concepts. He's one of the last vestiges of true academia in what is now a "customer" orientated school system.
Dr. Lippert is a great man, a challenging teacher I will admit. He keeps the standards high because he wants the students to think on a deep level and do more than just recall information. I'd recommend him only to students who are serious about their education and want to get the most out of it.
He makes you think, but you learn a lot and gain a deeper and broader understanding of the material. Dr. Lippert is awesome!
WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!! It seriously is the most boring class as well. Most kids fell asleep during the class. There was a paper due every week and then the final was 10 papers starting with things from the beginning of the semester. It was ridiculous. He wont help you & grades VERY hard. He thinks he knows it all and is not clear AT ALL!
Lippert is the man. I love him ! He is an AWESOME professor and a COOL guy.
This man is a terrible teacher. He write on everyone paper that they are terrible writers. I didn?t take you for English but for film study. If you have half the question answered right no worries because your still getting an f. you need to just write what he says. If you like to give your opinion; I wouldn?t take him because he will not listen
Lippert is awsome. I had him for film study and it might have been boring but he made it easy. He's kinda hard to take notes on cuz he just rambles but the papers are so easy. I got an A on everyone of them. His midterm and final are impossible but he curves them so much that I got and A on both of them. He writes on every paper how u could improve
Cool Dude. At first, i hated him . His class is long as hell, he gave me a c on my first paper and ridiculed it. BUT after going to talk about my paper he tells you what to write. If you rewrite the essay you pretty much get an A. Also if you Comm major he loves you. i go see him every week and he loves me. Really cool dude
Awesome class. I learned a lot. If you understand the material and create original ideas and thoughts on midterms and papers you will do well. I received an A on every assignment. Engaging him in class is the easiest way to learn the material he teaches.
Pretty much got Fs on all the papers. If you go to class and write his lecture word for word you get an A, anything else in an F. Very boring. He does let you rewrite papers to help grades.
Judging by most of the commentary, these people deserved F's. His tests are very difficult and meticulous, and he's very opinionated. But that does not mean he lacks as a professor. He's an extremely intelligent man, and he is very useful and knowledgeable on the topic of film. Would I suggest taking this class? No, unless you're majoring in film
Great guy. If you can get passed his off-topic lectures, the classes are good. I had him 3 times and I don't regret none of the times. He's very helpful and easy to work with. I received A's on all papers from just the stuff he says. he's very intelligent and wants you to express yours.
Lippert's the man. Had him three times, all A's. Listen to his lectures, take notes and rework his words into your own original ideas and you won't have any problems in his classes. Shows great movies too.
Dr. Lippert is one of the smartest professors on campus. This man is so knowledgeable in a plethora of fields within communications. His lectures are long, but if you keep up with what he is saying, you walk away with some great knowledge. I am very happy I took his classes, as they have opened my mind up significantly to all kinds of Mass Media.
Goes WAY too hard on grading papers for his Intro to Film class. I actually put work into them and enjoyed the movies and still received C's.
Dr. Lippert is awesome. Some people think he is condescending because he likes to explain certain cinematic terms that most students are unfamiliar with. You should be thankful for this; he's really helpful if you ASK FOR ADVICE. If you have a strong knowledge of art house film, you'll do great. If not, you need to see him during office hours.
Each class consists of a movie. He gives questions based on the movie you choose one to write a paper to be completed for the next class. You can rewrite these papers until you receive the grade you want. If you take notes on the lecture, writing these papers will be a breeze. Also do not waste money on a textbook.
He would just go on and on about things that didn't even relate to anything in class. I would bring my laptop and sit on Facebook and I still got a B in the class.
Took him for pop culture was very boring in lecture, skipped class all the time. It was a very easy class had a midterm and a final as well as maybe two short essay assignments. It was all super easy. You do need the one book he requires but its very cheap on amazon. He does take attendance but I skipped all the time and still finished with an A.
Pompous, conceited, and wants you to write his way or the highway. Gives no regard for effort and has no respect for any opinion other than his own.
Be prepared to to write lots of papers. You must state his opinion to get a good grade even if your idea makes sense and you can support your thesis. If it is not his belief you will fail the paper. People who have worked together on papers and wrote similar ideas one would get an A and one would fail. Proceed with caution and hope you are a fav.
Professor Lippert is not that bad, he is just old school and a bit opinionated. He gets off topic easy and does NOT hand out any assignment instructions. But the class is simple, 4 speeches and 2 papers. The speech topics are easy, minimal effort needed. Email him for help if anything. Also he lets you rewrite speeches for a better grade
Lippert is brutal. Do not take him for senior seminar otherwise you will be talked at for 2 and a half hours about things that don't make sense to an average student. Books required are extremely complex, nearly impossible to comprehend, and he makes you feel stupid if you can't contribute about it. Whatever you do don't take this class with him.
The man is extremely intelligent and you can learn a lot about life from his lectures. Other than that stay away from his class. I'm telling you just stay away from it. It's not worth it. You're going to read this, ignore it, then regret it.
Lots of papers, gives you no room for your own opinions that arent his own. Grades papers harshly, and if you dont write what he likes and do a rewrite hell still tell you you are wrong. Stay away.
Paul is an extremely harsh grader and very old school. You HAVE TO SHOW UP to understand anything. He claims he's easily accessible but honestly it was so hard for me to reach him. Last semester he said we had until 4pm on Friday of finals week to bring rewritten papers to his office, but he left early in the day and never answered my emailed copy.
Out of all my years in college, He is the worst professor I ever had. Absolutely brutal, just picks films he likes that have no lesson to the class and does not follow anything from the text book. He doesnt even give you a study guide for any of the two tests. Without a doubt the worst professor I ever had
Awful... absolutely terrible. I took Professor Lippert for senior seminar, it was the worst class I have ever taken. His lectures make no sense to what you are learning, he is very opinionated, and is the harshest grader. He lets you rewrite papers until you get the grade you want, but good luck. He is no help if you ask for advice.
Professor Lippert was hands down the worst professor Ive ever had. On top of being a hard grader, and an old school teacher, he was just a very bitter man to deal with. Prof. Lippert claims to be easily accessible, however this just isnt true. Do. Not. Take.
Hardest class Ive ever taken. However he responds pretty quickly and lets you rewrite papers until you receive and A.
One of the best teachers Ive every had!
Lippert is extremely old school. His course is very lecture heavy and often times the lectures dont correspond with the assignment or speech that is due, much less the lectures dont even teach you about communication. He is SUPER monotone as well. Stay away if you can!
Lippert was so bad I had to actually rate him to, hopefully, save somebody else the pain, nothing else to be said.
Missed half of the classes and sent no email letting the class know it was cancelled. Rude to every student that emails him.
He skips class whenever he wants, doesn't let students know about class cancelation until the day of class, pretty much talks about his opinion and why it matters more than yours, and always interrupts while someone else is talking. Unfortunately, he's teaching grad school courses and I'm shocked he's not retired yet
Dr. Lippert is extremely misunderstood. He is a wonderful man who just wants to share his intelligence. In order to do well, I highly suggest you create a nice report with him. Visit his office hours, talk to him after class. He loves that, as long as he gets to know you and as a student, and you show effort in the material, you will do great.
