Class was exactly as syllabus stated. Participation was key, but you did not have to be over the top. There was not too much reading, and paper content was not too difficult.
Absolutely agree with a previous comment. He is nice. Follow the sillabus. There is nothing hard in this class. Just don't be lazy and do your homework. It's not so difficult to read 2-3 pages. Attendance is important. Also all the essays must be on time.

Makes you think, and rethink. Challenges you. If you're a lazy thinker, this class isn't for you.
Very knowledgeable on the subject. Easy to get a good grade if you show up, do the work.

Passionate about writing, extremely tactful and helpful with students.
Mr. Martinez is an exemplary professor. He will demand a lot out of his students but if you do your work, you can not miss the benefits of his class. If you are hoping to get an "easy A", you probably shouldn't take this class... you probably should also re-think being in college. Mr. Martinez is an example of what a college professor should be.
Excellent teacher, always willing to help. Follows the syllabus and goes by the rules which is good for those of us who do too. Crystal clear and the discussions in class are great and applicable to the real world. My favorite teacher. And, sooo hot.
Fun , interesting , easy to talk to and helpfull.
he is too hard,if you take that class you have to forget A and B
he wants presentation in class also he wants 3 normal essay and he does lot of quiz and short essay in class attendance is very important if you not attandance 2 times you can be drop same rule valid with late if you late 2 times late about 10 minutes you can be drop.Make sure for this class
He was an excellent professor, followed the syllabus. Attendance and participation was very important. Overall good professor, work was fairly easy and straight to the point. Interesting discussions
HORRIBLE. point blank. i walked into RHT 102 and my teacher asked if we knew about research and this and this and im like uhm paul matinez made us read a book thats it. shows how well he prepared me for 102 eh?
AMAZING!!! Best teacher i've had at triton. Very helpful and was very intersting. Most memorable class I've had in all my college years.
Mr Martinez is a great teacher. He focuses most of his material around poetry because he himself is a poet. He does require many little mini essays but he gives full credit to those who attempt. He requires 3 formal essays which I suggest taking your time on. He is really fair. Attendance is mandatory. He is strict about that. Great teacher.
Lots of essays and expects a lot but you learn a lot too. He's a published author, so he knows what he's talking about. He cares a lot about writing, maybe too much.
Love, Mr. Martinez, taken every class offered by him (RHT 101, 102, ENG 103). Super interesting and makes me think outside the box like no teacher has before. If you can't deal with logical thinking and a different approach to teaching this is not the teacher for you.
This teacher is easy, just stay on top of subjects, and read the article and the books. I don't like how he grades papers because I would work hard on them to make a good point, but you would always need to turn in a rough draft if you want to know exactly what he wants out of your paper. Don't miss the class times there are workshop days anyways.
I've written a gazillion essays in this class. Most are short analysis and 3 formal ones. There's never a test nor quiz. There's a duo presentation in the middle of the sem. But from midpoint onwards, he doesn't read the papers anymore (well, cuz there's a lot) so he gives all of 'em a perfect score. Just make sure your printer has tons of ink.
Great teacher! I had a lot of fun in his class this past year. He expects you to do the work and don't try to hand in stuff late it's big NO NO. Had 4 formal essays and 1 20min class presentation. He likes you to participate in class discussions so make sure you do and you'll get extra points.
martinez is one of the very few teachers at triton that don't baby students, which i like.(he is actually teaching at college level)you'll have to analyze text like crazy but in the end you'll become a better reader/writer.
Mr. Martinez in my book is a great teacher. He's very helpful& wants his students to succeed. He requires 4 formal essays and a 20 min summary presentation on whichever book you are reading for class. Class participation is a must, so if you happen to be shy definitely choose a different teacher.
He is the best teacher. Class participation is a must, so if you happen to be shy choose a different teacher.
Best Teacher!! YES, there's a fair amount of work to do and if you are up then its easy 'A' class. I cant see anyone getting an "F" in his class unless he/she doesn't show up.
Such an honor to have been his student. He is a well-known poet and amazing teacher. I never liked poetry but learned to love it after this class. He's just great! Really makes you think and explore controversial subjects.
I wasn't really satisfied with my grade but I have to say he's pretty fair teacher. Assigns too many essays. It'd be nice if he explained a little more what he wanted on the essays.
One of the best teachers I have had at Triton. Very Helpful and liberal in class. He assigns essays, but honestly, it's based off your personal opinion and thoughts. He really opens your mind up when writing. He also takes interest in students who like English and Poetry analyzing. It was a pleasure to be in his class. Easy A at best!
The class was pretty interesting, be ready to read and write essays. Very fair and nice.
He's great. He'll definitely exercise your analyzing skills. Don't expect to slack off. He assigns essays weekly. Most are short though, so don't let that deter you from taking his class. Class discussions get pretty interesting too. I highly recommend taking Paul for RHT102. You'll enjoy it.
He is very chill and intellectual. Attendance is mandatory but he gives you a good amount of absences. He's not the easiest teacher, but if you put forth some effort you will get a good grade. He gives a lot of assignments but they are very simple and short. Overall, he's worth taking!
Paul Martinez was mediocre. He failed to let students know what their grades were throughout the entire semester, so if anyone needed to know their grade, they'd have to schedule an appointment with him, and only when he had time. If he didn't like your opinion on papers, one could see a grade drop on the assignment.
Martinez was a great teacher. I feel like I'm a much stronger reader after his class. I notice things I never would have before. He helps you see poetry totally different. You can tell he's passionate about it. I'm taking his class again.
We did 5 essays and alot of short replies. He expects you to participate. A little strict about cell phones, but most are. You won't pass if you don't turn in all the homework. He likes you to talk in class.
Does not give credit to people who join in the discussion. No differentiation. Kind of a "I'm the boss guy."
He is a very boring man. This made it a pain to even get to class let alone participate. I do not recommend this teacher.
Martinez is a solid teacher. Makes you write a lot though. Follow syllabus and no late essays.
Martinez was cool. He actually cares that you do well but you have to write the full page amounts if you want to pass. 5 essays about 5 pages average. The grammar stuff was boring. I'm singed up for his next class.
Personality wise, he's great. He is nice and for the most part approachable. He is also fair, but he lacks in that he does not tell students their grades! He also assigns a lot of papers. If you do everything you're told and participate, then you're golden. He's definitely not easy, but not too difficult either. Oh, and he's also a tough grader
Mr. Martinez was great! He really cares about teaching you and helping you become a great writer. The workload for this class wasn't extreme and he outlines it in the beginning of class. His assignments are usually interesting, be prepared to think critically and write a few papers. He really appreciates class participation!
He's good at what he does & genuinely cares about us students. All you have to do is participate and you'll get a good grade in the class.
I took this class because I always had wanted to try creative writing and so glad I did. Some of the most interesting conversations I ever had were in this class. I see writing much different now. You can tell Martinez cares deeply about art and getting students interested in art and poetry.
This man is boring. His lectures put me to sleep and he is very monotone. Would never take again.
Good character and all around teacher. Good with feed back. Has students best interest.
Mr. Martinez is a very serious about writing which is really great. I feel like I learned so much about the feel of a good poem. He writes poetry too which is amazing to be taught by someone who is an actual writer. Great class. If you are there to mess around though it is not the class for you. Be ready to work!
I had him a few years ago. I didnt have a problem with the professor until the end of the semester. I ended up with 68 and he refused to move it 2 points. He told me that will be unethically of him really? I talked to him abou every week about my grade and he would tell I should be fine. Yeah ok all lies. The class is hard to stay awake as well.
Very low spoken professor. Very tough grader. Every week theres a quiz. A lot of papers. BEWARE Mr Martinez failed 5 students this semester! None of which knew they were even doing bad in his class until they receive their final grade back. He does not keep track of grades.
I took Martinez for 2 classes. He was awesome. Totally helped me out in figuring out how to transfer. He even wrote one of my letters of recommendations. I love how formal his classes were. He treated his students like adults and expects the same.
Mr. Martinez is probably one of my favorite professors. He is easy-going but a very hard grader. I remember when I got my first paper back and was disappointed at how poorly I did but thought I did great. So it only motivated me to do better and then after that paper I never got a paper back that was less than a B. great teacher.
Cool English professor. Gives out assignments as usual expectation amount. Always is there for help when needed!
Inspirational professor , I enjoy his class and makes sure you understand the subject. Cares about his students
Martinez is great!
Cares for his students
Second time with Martinez. Hes the real thing. Be ready to write a lot tho but I guess thats the point.
He has become one of my favorite teachers he so understandIng and committed to making sure the student know the assignments and materials to study. He doesnt mind explaining the assignment over and over if u dont understand .Hes kind of strict on grading for students that will help become a better writer. I will recommend this class to anyone
Great ! Take him you wont regret it !
RHT 255 was an incredible class. Professor Martinez does a good job of helping you with your writing and guiding you in the right direction
He said "I really don't have many students get As in my class, be lucky to get a B ". Really wasn't helpful with students and specific on how to do to get A in class . I reached out many times, and he wasn't really helpful.
I had Professor Martinez for both RHT 101 and 102 and don't regret it at all. It's an easy class to pass as long as you do what's asked of you. His grading is a little heavy, but it helps in the long run to create more successful papers in the future. Paul is a great and engaging teacher.
Pros: good guy, knows his stuff, good for frosh, good discussions. Cons: needs to trust in his abilities & chill out. Micromanage-y classroom rules like v. strict attendance & phone policies suggest insecurity (he has no reason to be), or like he's more worried about potty-training freshmen & demanding respect than letting class develop organically
Miss 1 or 2 assignments? you fail even if you have B and C's on everything else. Want to try and talk to your teacher and negotiate anything? Nope. Try and take a different teacher for this class.
I had Professor Martinez for both RHT 101 and 102 and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. He was an amazing professor and definitely helped me progress in my writing. He will be very clear about what he expects and give you clear and concise feedback on papers. 10/10 recommend.
He was an okay instructor overall, but when I took RHT 102, it didn't feel like a rhetoric class. Everyone that I've talked to was writing more about more technical stuff going on in the world with a balance of some literature. Here, it's just pure poetry, like where is poetry going to bring me in life in the general world?
I had Professor Martinez for RHT 102 entirely online and highly recommended him as an instructor. Reach out to him with any questions or concerns, and you will do just fine. Do all assignments per his guidelines, including discussion questions. Do not miss any work.
Every 1-2 weeks an essay assignment is due by the week's end. The teacher gives a rough outline of what the paper should be about but later better clarifies it in an email the next day after it's assigned. He gives a lot of readings to prepare you for each essay but its not really necessary to read the entire thing. Overall the class is fine.
He's a really good professor, it's not super hw heavy but you need to be organized and have a good work ethic to get the writings and reading all done in time. Overall good experience, not too hard but be prepared to read and talk with peers in class out loud.
With it online, you rely on the book and resources provided by him. Assignments were due by the end of the week (usually discussion posts). There were essays due around once a month. Reaching out to him was easy, and he would be really helpful! The online course was nicely organized and easy to navigate, and assignments were straightforward.
Use the textbook way too much literally every assignment needs multiple quotes from it. NO other teachers still use textbooks. However the class work isn't heavy so it's very manageable. Would be much better assignments if you could just talk about the topics and sources without being tied to the textbook.
Heavily uses a textbook but an online copy of it was provided for free. You'll be expected to have actually read the textbook and be able to use concepts from it. Largely my issue was the lack of feedback during grading beyond the basic rubric, leaving it difficult to understand where I went wrong.
My main issue was the lack of timely feedback on grades. I repeatedly asked about my progress, and he would tell me that I was doing fine. However, I later discovered I had received a 68%, just two points away from a C. I would recommend seeking a tutor if you're struggling in this class.”
I strongly recommend choosing a different professor, especially if you're not an English major or are a full-time student. This course was very challenging. However, if you're majoring in English, this class might be a good fit for you.
Please read this review carefully. This course is very challenging and can add significant stress to your life. The professor is known for being slow to update assignment grades. Several students dropped the class after weeks of realizing they were likely to fail. Do yourself a favor: choose another course and save your money.
Professor Martinez is a strict grader. While I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, as someone who doesn't plan to become an English teacher, I feel I should have chosen a more easygoing professor.
Challenging course with difficult papers. No extra credit offered. I do not recommend it.
Hard class. Had to drop the course. Unfortunately my writing skills weren't at the level that met professor Martinez requirements.
Save yourself the trouble and pick a different professor. I made the mistake of ignoring the reviews and regretted it. This professor clearly has favorites, relies heavily on the textbook, and assigns essays that are unnecessarily challenging.
Last semester, I found out just a week before the class ended that I wasn't going to pass. I knew I was struggling, but why couldn't he update me on my grades earlier? Instead, he kept telling me not to worry too much and that I'd be fine. I highly recommend avoiding this professor.
PLEASE READ- Please do yourself a favor and choose a different professor. Especially if you are paying out of pocket for your education. This professor reads from a text book. He does not explain his grading rubric. Most students receive horrible grades and drop the course.
Just make sure you are ready for English 101. If you aren't the best writing I recommend changing professors. You won't know your grades unless you ask repeatedly.
Amazing professor! He's very approachable and passionate about the arts. The class featured incredible poetry and introduced me to several new poets of color. He truly cares about literature, and that passion shines through in his teaching. The class was heavily discussion-based, and he challenged us to think critically.
Don't recommend this class. Taken as a pre-req for a different program. Lectures are so monotone. Does not post grades also.
I'm shocked I got a D in this course. I thought I was doing well. It's 2024, and this professor doesn't post grades online; he keeps them in a notebook. When I asked if I was passing, he said yes, but I ended up failing. Completely unexpected and very frustrating.
Professor Martinez's feedback was very bare-bones and I felt like interaction was largely missing. He may come off better in person, but out of all my English professors at Triton, he seemed the most disinterested. Good selection of short stories and writings throughout the semester. I wish I could rate him higher, but my experience was lacking.
I was surprised to see bad reviews for him. It's mainly essays and discussions. He grades honestly so don't expect 100% on your essays (he's NOT as tough as some of the other English teachers) If you get your work done on time and read the instructions properly you should have no problem. Overall great teacher!
He has 0 late work acceptance policy. At the start of the semester I had a documented personal matter and was unable to submit the first essay. I asked for an xtra day and he did not accept it tanking my grade for the semester.also was hard to reach via email taking weeks to respond. Besides that the class is easy just rec if ur busy out of school.
Omg I loved having him as a teacher. Surprised he has any bad reviews, he was literally so nice and his class is so easy.
This professor is a tough grader with little compassion for personal issues. Even if you explain setbacks or mental health struggles, he won't offer extensions or flexibility. Coursework isn't heavy, but missing deadlines—even for valid reasons—can lead to failing. Be prepared and stay on top of everything.
