Overall i think he is a great professor! he did not rely on lab as the comment below says. He is a VERY tough grader so if your looking for a challenge he is your guy! He is a VERY intelligent man and believes strongly in getting the best out of each one of his students! He's not afaid to tell you that you don't belong in his class! So be prepared!

He can put you to sleep easy.

he is a really funny professor and is not afraid to say anything and use stories related to topic, he helps with english alot. he stutters alot though, its annoying as ****, but overall good professor.

What can I say about Dr. McCann? Well he goes off on these off the wall stories that has nothing to do with the class but it makes the class interesting to me. He doesn't really care about your absences or why you are absent as long as you write the 4 papers he requires. Overall he is not too bad!

Good prof though the class was harder than I expected. It's really good if you seek help from him during office hours. He helped me revise my draft and it made a big difference.

Very challenging professor. Must have a wide vocabulary if you want to understand his requirements, or bring a dictionary with you. Over all if you attend the class, seek his help and PAY ATTENTION and participate, then you will pass his class.

My favorite Professor by far. Taking him again for 1302 and I can't wait! He is extremely interesting and if you follow his directions and shop up to his lectures your will do great!

Good professor who is very helpful. The literature is a bit challenging if you're willing to do the work, the class is pretty easy.

Professor McCann was absolutely my favorite professor I've taken so far at Del Mar. He's really personable, and his lectures are super interesting. He's also a very fair grader.

The class was harder than I expected but I learned a lot and it was very interesting. Half the class dropped because the class had a focus on Science Fiction and they didn't know. I enjoyed his teaching.

Dr. McCann probably knows more about literature than anyone I have ever met. He is very informed. His expectations are pretty high because he has taught at large universities in the past. You will do a ton of writing and reading but if you stick it out and work hard you will be where you need to be by the end. Made an A.

I learned more in this class then I did in most of my other classes. That being said he's not a real people person. He's cool and his class is entertaining but if your looking for an easy boost to the ole GPA I'd look elsewhere.I was an AP English student in high school that usually made A's and B's. So he kinda rocked my world when I made a C.

Good teacher. His class helped me develope my writing skills and I am glad. The big problem that most students have is that they don't listen to what he says to do on his assignment. I followed what he said word for word and got an A. The only reason I got B's on some of my assignments is because of grammar.

Kept me awake, which is hard to do.

Dr. McCann is a funny guy if you're into a dry sense of humor. He comes across as "not a people person" but he's not so bad. His grading technique is hard, and he doesn't have time for high school antics. He has specifics he's looking for in essays and it's important not to miss a class of his. This isn't an easy a you have to work hard.

1301 has 6 papers you take. Each paper has different lengths. The first is the hardest (6 pages). Takes attendance every day. Lectures every day. Pretty clear cut instructions but a very tough grader.

Definitely not an easy class but Dr. McCann was very specific about the assignments and his expectations. I've struggled in a lot of classes because professors were not specific.

If you do the work, you pass. Simple. If you are lazy and can't write a 5 page college course paper then maybe you shouldn't be in college. Probably my favorite professor ever.

Definitely not the easiest professor I've had but one of the best. Very clear about his expectations. I was usually confused in my other English classes.

At first I thought this was going to be a difficult class. But I judged too quickly. He goes over whatever your paper topic will be weeks in advance before giving you the assignment. He is very specific on what he wants and is very detailed in teaching it to you. Not an easy A but a very achievable A. Do the work! Overall a great & funny Professor.

All around a great professor. He assigns reasonably long papers and they encourage critical thinking. His grading rubric is clear and his lectures are interesting. Seriously, he's worth taking if your interests in the course go beyond just satisfying another required credit. The things he teaches are useful through all my college courses.

McCann in a nut shell, An amazing professor. He is not gonna hold your hand and pat you on the back for an attempt at a good paper. So if that's what your looking for, then try another professor. McCann will tell you your paper sucks (if it sucks) and slam you with an F. Too BAD. He will critique your papers like no other. You can gain so much.

The class was kind of awkward but for the most part pretty simple. It's next to impossible to keep up with your grade in the class. Pop quizzes were given at the beginning of random classes, so don't skip and do the reading! Overall it was a good experience.

His lectures were awesome, and funny, if you can get past the profanity. He was very clear about his expectations when it came to the writing projects. He'll tell you the Do's and Don'ts for each project, via PowerPoint, writing prompts, etc. The course was well-structured. Stressful at times, but it was worth taking. Great professor.

Unless you are just tired, you will never fall asleep in his class. If you are truly interested in improving your writing or if you just love literature you are not going to find a better instructor. If you apply yourself you will leave this course prepared to write papers for any University. Great job Dr. McCann!

Ok so I hate writing papers but I did put effort into every paper that was asked of me. I just feel he was very hard on grading papers and didn't cut anyone any slack or allow for extra credit. Overall though I got away with a B so sit back and enjoy the lectures like I did and try to do the required readings. He can be funny too.

Dr. McCann is zero tolerant. So, showing up is not enough. If you are truly wanting to improve your writing skills and be prepared for University writing; his class is where you want to be. If you want an easy "A"; you've come to the wrong place. I took him for 1301 and 1302. I will more than likely take him for business writing.

Overall, a fairly straight forward class. 4 essays, the first one being the hardest. The remaining 3 are easy as long as you pay attention to his rubric and what he expects out of you. You dont do much but listen to him talk all class, which isnt a problem because hes fairly interesting and you learn a lot by listening to his examples.

I was nervous at first about taking this class. It had been years since I had taken ENGL 1301. However, McCann was a great instructor! He is very straight forward and to the point. Easy A if you show up and do the work. Simple as that. I think I missed 4 classes and still got an A!

I enjoyed taking Dr. McCanns class. He was a little abrasive at first but in time I learned why he is that way. He tells you exactly what he wants you to do, just pay attention and ask questions. He is available during his office hours (take advantage of this to have him go over your paper). He is there to help improve your writing if you want it.

He is a tough grader. He expects you to be able to write on the same level as any university student. If you follow his directions and seek assistance on things you may struggle with (ie thesis statements, grammar, etc) you will do fine. Hes available during his office hours to preread your work to help if you are confused or struggling

Though his vocabulary is not for weak hearted snowflakes. He gives very clear instructions on what he expects and how to do his assignments. Follow those and you will have no problem. If you think you know better than he does you will have issues.

Straightforward. Pay attention, ask questions and get it done. Interesting lectures, brilliant man. Learned a great deal about writing. Looking forward to taking him for English 2.

Professor McCann was a really good teacher. He is a tough grader but he gives amazing feedback. There are also many pop quizzes over the readings.

I enjoyed his class! It's what you put into it. I'm not the smartest, but I do work hard so I received an easy A. He has long lectures and once made us watch a 2-hour video for a 5 question quiz. There are 4 main papers. LISTEN TO LECTURES. Provides a secret word for tests/quizzes. Can't stay on top of your work? Don't take. But this is college.

I had Dr. McCann for 1301 and he is very straight forward. You are fully aware of his expectations through out the semester. I enjoyed his class online.

Professor McCann is a diamond in the rough. Took him for 1302 and 2327. Obviously the classes were tough, however he makes it clear as to what he wants. All these salty ex-students complaining about his unfairness probably couldn't understand even if they tried. McCann pushed me to go beyond, I've never worked harder for any other professor b4

Dr. McCann is the type of professor that will force you to step up and earn your grade. He will not coddle you nor give you breaks. You are a college student. You are treated as such. The class is a challenge but in the end, you will be better for it. There is no "getting by" in this class. Follow his instructions. Do the work. You will be fine.

If you’re a freshmen taking his class a lot of stuff he says will go over your head. His lectures are really thought provoking though and he’ll make you think about the topic quite intelligently, however sometimes it’s intimidating to be able to engage with what he says. Don’t take him if your feelings are easily hurt for being wrong.

I don't understand the low ratings. He was an amazing professor and his class was surprisingly easy. His lectures were very insightful and hilarious. He was very respectful, polite, and generous. He is very understanding and will let you fix your essay if he sees that you missed something.

Profesor McCann is a great guy, not only are his lectures interesting and informative but you also learn so many other things aside from writing. This class requires basic writing skills as well as an understanding of analyzing articles. Lastly, he gives great movie recommendations and has interesting stories to tell.

McCann's Class is extremely easy to pass if you listen to the lectures, read the book, and just do the work. I'm slightly hard of hearing, so his online lectures can sometimes be difficult to understand, but for the most part they are good. (Especially when he has slide shows included) If you have questions, just ask him.

Professor McCann's ENG1301 class is challenging but rewarding. He has high expectations, but his feedback is valuable. Using unstuck study and the free textbook alongside his lectures helped me improve my writing significantly. Take it seriously, and you'll learn a lot.
