Played guitar for us. Tough, but go to class.

god he's hard, avoid avoid avoid
Dumb **** just puts the book up and talks about it in a very unorganized manner. Tests are rather hard and he doesnt even try to make chemistry fun.
He had one in class quiz, he gives you curves and extra points, but he is difficult. Likes math questions on tests. he had a 58 question test while other chemistry classes had only 32 questions. I wouldn't recommend him, but some people like him
all that I can say is don't even think abou taking him. He is the chemistry professor you dont want to take besides Kohl. Them two are evil. Tests are mostly calculations, he goes over the last chapter that is going to be on the test the day before, all of his test questions are tricky. yah dont take him.
302 seems to be stifling no matter who the prof. is, and I’ve heard of many worse (Kohl, for instance). He explained concepts efficiently, but wasn’t always friendly outside of class. 301 was a breeze, and I enjoyed having him for that course.

he really puts things into real life terms
He's an okay teacher. Like the others said he can be kind of vague. What you need to know is: If Anna is still his TA----take this class and GO TO WEEKLY REVIEW sessions! She breaks it down to high school level and almost makes it super-easy!! She's GREAT!
rough course, particularly during the summer, but he had to be the most reasonable professor i have ever had for a science class. the material is tough no matter how you shake it, but this guy took the time to really make sure you knew how to succeed... and he didn't bore you to death.
He is all right. But if you are not interested dont take it. Not many ppl get A in the class. Tests are too short so if you miss 2 questions, you miss the A.
The material in the beginning of the year will appear to be hard, but later once you catch on to how to study, you realize you can get away with a B with reviewing homeworks, but if you want an A, read the book's bold summary first to get an idea of what you are going to learn, then read the section corresponding to that summary. Tests are tricky
Easy if you study and go to class, but not a class you can get by with slacking in.
Really hard tests, but then he hands out really big curves too.
Really hard class....teaches way too fast and does not expand on important information and really complicated stuff. Do not take him!
Really funny, makes things interesting. Good teacher. Class is somewhat difficult but it's college chemistry so it's to be expected.
Really hard class he can be funny at times but besides that really boring lectures. He tries to get you extra points by adding points to your grade through attendance small quizzes (which are kinda fun) and lots of homework. I definetly recommend doing the homework since all of his test are based on that.

Once he called a slide he was writing a sidenote...THE WHOLE CLASS IS A SIDENOTE!! I don't think that one thing he writes in class is useful for the tests and homework. If you end up in his class, make friends and study outside of class and use your textbook...McCord is awful at getting a really hard subject through to more than 10% of the class.
Pretty funny, very clear with the notes and flexible with homeworks
This class is impossible. Awful prof, boring lectures, and the tests are not based off of class at all.
Lectures were confusing. When teaching, he tends to jump around different topics we need to learn so it gets a bit difficult to follow him during lectures. Uses iclicker, which pretty much is the only fun part of the class. His exams are very very tricky. During the final we were allow to use a regular sized index card as a cheat sheet.
TAKE LAUDE! McCords notes are confusing and your basically scrambeling the entire time to try and jot them down. He is not helpful at answering qiestions he's the type of perosn that just expects you to get the subject. I studied so hard for McCords class and pulled a B, i took Chem 2 with Laude and he explains things so much better and i go an A
McCord's lectures are fun and intriguing, but his exams are HARD! do NOT take his class if you want to learn and do relatively well. his notes are messy. after class, i would never be able to understand my notes. he does curve exams, but not enough :/ this is NOT an easy class. after the first exam, i kissed med school goodbye.
good professor, just study
The man really knows his chemistry. He only explains concepts, no straightforward examples because he wants you to practice on your own. He does iclicker questions. The tests were tricky. The first test was pretty easy, but that makes you unprepared for the 2nd which was nothing compared to the 1st. But Mccord helps as much as he can.
McCord is a good professor. He knows what he's teaching, but his notes were a little too unorganized for me to follow and I needed more structure. His tests are known to be one of the hardest so watch out! The iclicker questions were actually pretty fun. I suggest finding a group of friends to go over the questions with.
Reccomended. He was pretty funny in lectures and graded fairly. His tests are pretty rough and expect you to have thorough knowledge of the material. However, he allows you to drop your lowest test grade which helps out at the end of the semester. Don't let bad ratings on here scare you away, he's worth taking.
seems like a nice guy but tests are ridiculous well the last couple at least the first two were pretty ok, but be prepared for every test and go to class and answer your iclicker questions.
McCord knows what he is talking about and is passionate about chemistry. BUT class is dull/no experiments-i fell asleep. His tests/hmwk are ridiculously hard,u can study but i believe ur grade wont reflect what u kno.first test easy..final/thermo impossible. He is clear on his notes and pretty funny, but LAUDE is better and more interactive.
McCord gets a horrible rap for being a good teacher. Do the homework on Quest, wait for him to give the answers to it, and then study that. Essentially quest is a preview of the test. He drops the lowest test, gives an opportunity to exempt the final (20% of the class did) and puts a nice curve on at the end. I'd say take him.
He is a great teacher; really really knows his chem. Really encourages you to logically work through every problem. His tests aren't the easiest but if you really study (actually do problems and not just skim over notes and HW solutions) there is no reason you can't get an A on his tests. Looking at his old tests is a great way to study.
Good lecturer, but tests were a lot harder than the other professors. Grading scales were lowered, and final exam is optional. Homeworks a lot like the questions on tests, but those concept questions will get you if you don't know the material REALLY well.
Dr. McCord is an awesome professor! He makes chemistry easy to understand while also keeping the class entertained. Homework is fairly easy and if you can do the homework you can do great on the exams. He's also helpful during office hours. Basically an easy A if you understand the material from lecture and you wont even have to read the textbook.

He's a very good teacher. He's clear on things relating to the current subject he's teaching and he makes the class fun with his funny remarks. His tests are extremely difficult, at least for me. Study study study for this class if you want a good grade and be able to apply the concepts in the book. Memorizing things just won't cut it.
I am still in his class but so far it has been good. He is a great teacher and his lectures are very entertaining. I actually enjoy listening to him teach and makes the material understandable for the most part. The tests are Quest generated and some questions can be a little tricky, but if you study and listen in class you should do fine.
McCord gives very interesting lectures. HOWEVER I cannot suggest that you take him as a professor. He tends to get very off topic during class and begins lecturing about advanced concepts which only confuse us. It should also be known that McCord gives the most difficult tests of any Chemistry 301 professor at UT.
There is no doubt that he knows what he is talking about. He is extremely smart, and tries his best to relate the topics to students. Must read the book, and attend class for iclicker grades. Test are very difficult, but drops the lowest exam grade. nice guy, just makes it hard
awesome teacher!! difficult tests though :/
Tests are very difficult!!!! He teaches only concepts in class, so you have to do the problem solving all on your own which means if you don't go to review sessions, you will fail. His lectures are very interesting and even entertaining but its not worth getting a bad grade for so don't take his class!!!
If you want to wok hard and make an A- go ahead and take McCord. He puts just the right amount of questions, usually 3 out of 30 on the tests, to make getting an A an impossibility. You have to have a deep understanding chemistry prior to his class, and also be alert for any information he may stress during lecture. Very stressful class!!!!!!!!!
Hate that he doesnt solve problems with you that you need to know for the test. He only explains concepts...Tests are extremely hard..Funny guy cool class but not worth a bad grade..
His exams are extremely hard..don't prefer him at all..even if that was an entry level Chemistry class..I just wonder sometime "Why he made that class so Hard?"..anyways..if you have any option open rather than MCCORD..take that person..
teach easy, test hard. everything is quest based
Be prepared to work really hard. I seriously recommend going to the TA's review sessions and watching the book's tutorials online. The tests are really hard and tricky. He expects you to somehow know literally everything there is to know about a subject on top of what he lectures and what the book says
He's not very nice. His notes are all over the place and hard to write down. His tests are unnecessarily difficult. Some test questions come from Quest and some are from out of the blue. Yes, he is "funny." But what does that have to do with being a good TEACHER. Take him only as a last resort!!
Yes, only take this proffesor as a last resort.
Be prepared to work hard. His tests are not impossible but hard and if you can get your hands on his tests you should pass easily. His lectures are general and funny but his tests are specific. You will need to do a lot of reading and self-study. At least he gives enough time on tests. He's a tricky guy and his tests reflect how careful you are.
Get his past tests no matter what! Ask friends & fraternities, buy them or even bribe someone - just kidding. But without them you will die a painful death unless you're a genius.
Contrary to the other ratings, I enjoy McCord's class. It may not be the easiest, but I definitely enjoy attending the class (he is very humorous). He does teach concepts, but if you understand the concept, you can tackle anything he throws at you. You must read test questions carefully, but you have 3 hours for 30 questions.
McCord is a good lecturer. Not a partiulary fair grader - his average grades are quite a bit lower than other lecturers for this course I understand, but that's another story. He has a good sense of humor and gets his points across reasonably well, but I would recommend that you read the book as well if you decide to take his course.
Skip this professor at all costs! His notes are unorganized and hardly ever does actual examples in class. He's very smart but doesn't understand the CONCEPT of teaching. You may need to study beyond the book and his lectures to fully understand the material.
His lectures were entertaining and I enjoyed how he worked hard to explain concepts in class rather than just working through problems. His tests were hard, but it was worth it. I learned a lot and it has served me well in engineering.
It seems from the previous reviews that the difficulty of McCord has eased quite a bit. The class was "renovated" if you will, so now McCord and Vandenbout do everything at the same time. McCord is very entertaining and will keep your attention. One assignment per week on quest, maybe a couple learning modules, and iClickers.
Since Fall 2011, McCord's class has changed ALOT. It is now much easier and clear than it used to be. However, expect to do plenty of work on your own if you want an A, especially doing practice problems. He is also a very entertaining and funny lecturer, but don't expect a lot of demos or examples to be done in class.
Really interesting professor, its a lot of material and the teaching he gets to do, he does a great job, but a very hard class all together. Requires a lot of time and studying!
Really good at explaining concepts by using real world analogies, but theres a lot of work and classes are fast paced. Plus the iClicker is used to check attendance. Luckily he waived off 7 lowest iClicker scores. I have him again this semester for CH 302.
Very entertaining. Explains concepts well but often times speaks about things not pertaining to 301 which can lead to some confusion. There is a lot of application of concepts for this class, so if you need to see problems worked or extra help understanding concepts ATTEND the TA review sessions. Do NOT get behind in this class!!!
McCord is a really good teacher but his tests are crazy hard! You go in there thinking you got a B on the test and next thing you know you get like a 60 or 70! He's great at explaining the concepts of chemistry on both 301 and 302 but his test are hard af.
Mccord is one of those professors that you will learn so much stuff from but you will regret taking him. I was lucky enough to take 301 and 302 with him (it was a challenge). He loves chemistry and will expect much from the students, that is his downfall. He expects you to know much of the material. Students cant mess around in this class. Curves.
Overall, this guy is fantastic. When he starts speaking chemistry terms, he goes on till we're all late for our next class. The catch? You'll fail the exams, even if you pay attention and study. Unless you already know all the chemistry there is to know. I recommend studying a lot more than you expect. Also, he's hot with a beard. LOL.
McCord is an awesome guy, funny and knows what he's lecturing about, but he expects a lot out of you. Everything you learn will be out of class either in his eBook or Google. If you're willing to work your ass off (especially if you haven't taken a chem class in a while) then take him. Great professor, just a lot of work.
McCord is a boss! His lectures are really interesting and he takes really thorough and easy to read notes that he posts online. Also, he's really good at explaining complex processes and such things. I understand the subject 100 times better now than I did before. Also, he's hilarious!
First off, chemistry is a hard course, so do not go into any chem classes automatically expecting that if you attend class and just do your homework you will get an easy A. So yes, Dr. McCord's class IS hard. But he will teach you the material, so if you are smart and take advantage of the resources he provides, and actually study, you will do well
I had McCord for both Gen Chem classes and he's honestly my favorite professor so far. Hilarious and sarcastic lecturer, but his tests ARE hard. The eBook is your Bible, study the Quest HWs, and learn HOW to apply concepts, don't just memorize them. Take advantage of past exams at Koofers. Classes are video recorded and he posts notes online.
Good Professor if you are self motivated. He goes over examples in class of things that WILL BE ON THE EXAM otherwise he kinda doesn't mention it and just expects you to learn off of Quest and the internet. Generally good, would take classes with him again.
McCord is a good teacher. He is not easy by any means. He purposely tries to trick you on the tests. I had a great homework and participation average yet still did poorly on the tests. You will learn a lot but you will not get the grade you deserve.
He is one of the best professors I've had since I got to college. His lectures are entertaining and he really wants his students to succeed. That being said he's not going to give it to you. His tests aren't easy and there is a fair amount of outside work, but if you take the time to learn the material this class will be good for you.
McCord used to be a "hardass" (his words exactly), which explains many of his negative reviews. His tests apparently aren't as tough as they used to be, but you still need to work (READ EBOOK) for a good grade in this class. Sometimes he goes on tangents mid-lecture, but he's generally really good at explaining concepts. Oh, and he's hilarious.
Awesome and funny professor. Lectures, the online textbook, modules, and hw are crucial to doing well on the tests.
Dr. McCord gives hard tests, and intentionally tries to trick you on some questions even though he claims he doesn't. You need to know the material backwards and forwards to do even remotely well on the tests. Read the eBook, do all the homework and learning modules, and study your butt off. If you have AP credit, don't take the class.
He is such a cool professor and hilarious. He teaches the concepts very well and expects you to master it. You do have to put in some work though. His test are difficult, but he really wants to make sure you know the material. There are homeworks and modules to do. They are very helpful. Koofers is also helpful for his previous tests.
McCord is awesome, clear lectures, just enough practice problems, easy grader. Seriously, no excuse to not get an A in his class. Online modules force you to read the eTextbook, then he goes over the material again in class, so you're being taught twice. Tests are simple, just like homeworks. He's a funny guy, gives entertaining lectures. 1010
Nicest, clearest and funniest professor I've ever had. I'll be taking him for CH 302 as well. Us who take McCord and work hard learn more chemistry than any other teacher's students. His tests aren't easy at all, but they force you to thoroughly learn and understand the material. He's very passionate about chemistry and makes the student be as well
He is one of the worst professors I've had in academia. Absolutely the worst. I did my assignments, and studied a week before for my exams. Still didn't manage to get an A in his class. If you want to do well in a Chem course and learn something at the same time, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He sucks at making exams. Half the stuff on it are never spoken about
If you are not interested in the "flipped Classroom" ideas, he is your man. Unlike the other chem professors at UT he takes a lot of time to teach the material, and does less in-class questions. His tests can be challenging if you are unprepared. He is a really funny guy and makes chemistry very interesting and lectures exciting. Uses an ebook
McCord is awesome. He's funny, really cares about his students getting the material, and will help you if you need it. His tests aren't bad, and he will curve if the averages are too low, plus he drops one. He's not a trick question guy. It isn't difficult to do well in his class if you do the homework, go to class, and study. I loved him.
Lectures are recorded, so you can take the class like an online class. Attendance is 5% but will be replaced by something else anyway. Tests are tough. You HAVE to do modules and homework to do well on these tests on top of keeping up with lecture material. One test is dropped, but you have a final anyway so you must know all the material.
Good lecturer but unhelpful otherwise. Obviously cares about the material and good at engaging students. Ebook is convoluted. Lots of daily hw. He is very responsive to advanced questions but is extremely unhelpful with more basic questions about the fundamentals of the material, seldom taking responsibility for any confusion he may have caused.
Good teacher, hard class. His lectures are interesting but sometimes he goes off topic. There are times he gets too exited and ends up confusing allot of people but most of the time, his lectures are clear. only chem teacher that doesn't give free response on tests. Not an easy class at all but you will leave knowing chemistry.
Review for non-science majors: if you aren't naturally gifted in math and science, be prepared to work extra hard if you plan on getting an A or B. Personality is great & will help if you ask questions but lectures are complex/difficult to follow. In class notes are disorganized. MUST read online book to do well on tests and to understand lectures.
Awesome guy. Easy class. He wants everyone to make an A so if you show up to class it's pretty much guaranteed.
I'm going to be honest I'm disappointed in his teaching style. The only reason I would go to lecture was because he always had iClicker questions so attendance was mandatory. Otherwise you pretty much have to teach yourself as he is no help. Get outside help and you should be fine, but I chose a different professor for CH302.
Lectures are confusing and disorganized, the only reason to go to class is for attendance otherwise you pretty much have to teach yourself . If you do end up taking him buy the course book! It's the best investment you will make. He also allows calculators on test unlike other professors but it's really just basic math. I would take another profess
Class has weekly online open-note quizzes, and all of the material is online ! Lectures in addition to online learning are sufficient as long as you work hard and study. Tests are tough but only if you dont study! Great professor, great personality, would take his class again!
Funny guy, but the class isn't a breeze. Ended up with an A but had to work really hard in the end and chose a different professor for CH302
Great professor for intro chem. Really funny and sarcastic, if you like that style of humor. Tests can be hard, but everything is manageable.
class was no fun
Dr. McCord, was an amazing teacher for CH 301, I am taking him again for CH 302. He taught the material very clearly, and I honestly felt like I learned chemistry after taking his class. He won't baby you, and doesn't teach to the test, so you actually have to learn the material.
Great guy better teacher really funny
Funny guy, have to attend class because there are clicker questions. Exams aren't the easiest, but he gives out practice exams which are very representative of the 4 exams you take throughout the semester. Allowed one drop for exam grades. Had several Canvas quizzes that were due every week. Would recommend. He supplies an online textbook.
Dr. McCord is one of my favorite teachers here so far! He keeps his lecture interesting with his animated style of teaching. You can really tell he has a passion for chemistry, which is nice to see (inspirational for a chem major like myself). Go to office hours and he will help you with anything. I recommend him!
CH301 isn't an easy course or a hard course, but you're not likely to just breeze through it with anyone. It is true that McCord's class tends to have worse grades than some others (Laude), but I think that you'll *actually enjoy* his class and learn the material very well if you take McCord.
He's hilarious and a very good lecturer! Genuinely enjoyed his class!
Does his lectures through doodles on photoshop, which is great for visual learners. . He posts updates on his own website which is very easy to navigate and really helpful. He is very approachable and has really awesome hair, but his enthusiasm didn't always manage to help me stay awake.
Super easy class, amazing professor, does his own notes, must memorize equations. I didn't pay attention in his class at all or take notes. I just did the practice exams and previous exams and any extra questions he posted a couple days before the exam and I was good. He curves the harder exams.
He kept our morning class very entertaining. Very sarcastic, so you have to be able to understand his form of humor, but he is an awesome professor! I would definitely take him again! If you are a visual learner, he does his lectures on photoshop and draws helpful pictures as he goes over the material.
Funny guy with an amazing sense of humor. Disorganized lecture "doodles" and attendance is mandatory because of Reef questions. Frequent homework assignments and learning exercises can help pad the grade if you ace them. Tests are particularly hard because mostly what he says isn't what on the test so you basically have to study everything.
McCord is a passionate professor but his notes are kind of all over the place and they're hard to follow if you look back on them. I couldn't pass tests because the reviews/homework I practiced rarely seemed to be related to test material. If you are a chemistry person, you will probably do fine but if not I would try a different professor.
He'll teach you in the most confusing way. Even tho I love his humor and his test is quite fair, if you care about understanding the materials more than grade, just don't him since you won't understand a thing.
McCord is just flat out awesome. He's a badass and his lectures reflect it. He really provides the resources and assistance (his grading policy is quite forgiving) you need to succeed in the class, so as long as you stay caught up should do very well.
Hilarious, sarcastic, does his best to make dry material as engaging as possible. Requires a lot of homework through canvas, but it's worth doing and very helpful. Not hard to get a good grade if you pay attention in class and make sure you understand the canvas assignments.
Amazing professor. Clarifies all of his material to the dot and I understood exactly what he would want for the test!
McCord is very funny and sarcastic and makes it obvious what he expects on the exam. However his lectures are disorganized so they can be hard to follow. Lots of HW on canvas, but if you just go over all the HW you'll do fine on the test. All of his past tests are on koofers as well, so do those and you'll know exactly what the tests look like.
I would not suggest taking Dr. McCord's class unless you have a strong background in chemistry. His lectures can be funny but his notes are all over the place and hard to follow. Be prepared to read to understand because he does not teach. This class requires you to teach yourself all Dr. McCord does is reiterate notes and not always clearly.
McCord is by far my favorite professor I've had! Hilarious and sarcastic. His class is easy, but test are a little difficult. If you study, you will get an A or high B. He is very passionate and explains the material well. He doesn't do demos.
Doesn't teach well in class- goes in circles about irrelevant material. It is up to you to teach yourself using the gchem site- which also sucks because its all theoretical and then youre somehow supposed to know how to apply it on insanely hard test questions. I had no chem background and this is the hardest class ive ever taken. dont take him!!!
McCords class is not easy, and you really have to teach yourself almost everything. His classes are just review of the homework but it does help. Go to his TA Jimmy's reviews if you're stuck! This class is challenging but definiltly doable if you're willing to try
I loved McCord. Sometimes his lectures unclear, or he will teach us something advanced that we don't need to know. He is super energetic and i really liked his "doodle" note format. Great class, easy A if you are willing to try. we don't do experiments though. pro tip: use koofers and mccords website from 2015 to get past tests, super helpful.
By far one of my favorite professors; he's funny, approachable and cares about his students. Assigned HW and/or learning modules before every class, in-class questions during lectures (graded for accuracy and attendance) and 4 tough exams (drops 1) modeled from the HW & LE's. If you put in the effort, you'll get the grade you want no problem.
4 exams (lowest will be dropped) Online Learning Exercises (LEs) and homeworks In-Class clicker questions (very easy to answer if you pay attention to his lectures) As long as you put in the work, it's possible to earn an A. Just don't fall behind in his class or it will be tough to catch up, especially if you didn't take AP chem in high school.
Read the gchem site front to back. I did bad on two tests which really hurt my grade, but if you do bad only on one it does not matter that much because lowest test gets dropped. Final is a compilation of the past tests with some more conceptual stuff. dont skip class or you'll be lost for the remainder of the lecture and miss 5% the total grade
McCord is relatively funny and sarcastic, his lectures can get boring at times though. His tests are straightforward and the questions are similar to the homework he assigns beforehand. He is good at explaining concepts, and his TAs have many available office hours.
McCord's lectures are unnecessary, they only confused me more. Study the homework, go to review sessions ( Jimmy is great) and use koofers for previous test and you'll be fine. I failed the first test with a 68, learned from my mistakes and brought my grade up to a 88 even with a 76 on the final (and chem doesn't come easy for me).
McCord is a good chemistry teacher. He is sarcastic but gets to the point. May not be as fun as the other chemistry teachers, but you can't go wrong with him either. Pretty standard workload like the rest of the chemistry department. Stay on top of your homework and be prepared for each class. Nothing out of the ordinary to succeed in this class.
I personally did not enjoy my time in Dr. McCord's class. It is evident he has a vast knowledge of the subject, but his teaching style was not for me. Within lectures he does not use pre-made powerpoints and instead draws what he is talking about. He can be somewhat abrasive. If you take CH301 with McCord, be prepared to do a lot of self-studying.
WOW! This class opened my eyes to college overall. Endless nights doing homework, lack of a social life, and addiction to caffeine. Chemistry really ruins your life but professor McCord makes it doable! Not to mention I really enjoy his doodles.
He clearly knows a great deal about chemistry, and when he does teach he is good at teaching it; however he spends more time telling us everything his students have/will do wrong then just explaining how to do problems and understand concepts the right way. He's condescending and put me in a bad mood almost every morning. He will prepare you though
Good professor. Clearly knows a lot about chemistry, and I thought his attitude and demeanor were quite funny. Handles a large lecture class well. The material is structured fairly well too. Not too bad.
Funny guy Lecture is done on photoshop - writes notes as he goes rather than following a pre-made powerpoint, very visual, uses illustrations Outside online learning modules/homework - a lot of self-teaching with lecture as a supplement or intro to the material Reef in class questions for unofficial attendance All multiple choice tests
Dr. McCord is overall a pretty good chem professor. I had him for CH302 and 302, and his 301 class was relatively easy. His lectures are pretty interesting; however, he tends to go off on tangents at times. You definitely have to teach yourself a lot of the material, as his lectures alone will not prepare you for the tests.
McCord is unbelievably funny yet simultaneously scary. He runs through the material very quickly, so you need to keep up. However, it is bearable.
Professor McCord has very engaging lectures, he does all of his notes on a Photoshop doodle which helps visual learners. Do the learning modules, re-do the homework, go to the TA reviews, and look up old exams!! Do this and exams will be fine. His G-chem site is helpful to keep everything organized. You will have to work for an A but it is do-able.
Mccord is a very likable guy- really passionate and funny and makes an active effort to make the lectures interesting. However, this class really kicked my ass. I thought the material was really interesting but the tests are always trickier than what's taught in class and in the homework.
Really liked Dr. McCord. Loved his lecture style and his music tastes based from what he'd play at the beginning of class. 10/10 would take again.
Apparently Professor McCord is a very mixed professor overall as some students love him and some don't. Personally, I was unable to adjust to his style of running the class at all. His curriculum is incredibly lecture heavy, except the lectures are not very organized at all. his notes especially are all over the place and the tests are very tricky.
Set out clear expectations at the beginning of the semester. He wants you to do well and gives you all of the resources to do so. As long as you keep up with class, its a really easy A.
He was incredibly funny, caring, had a great personality and actually teaches. He responded to an angry email rather quickly with a warm response. He welcomed criticism. He was blunt and even told us straight up that he didnt like the inorganics which i found out of place. Listened to Abba for a week straight when he played Fernando in class! 10/10
Great professor! I won't go as far to say that he is an easy A because the class can definitely be difficult. I enjoyed his class very much and is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. I will more than likely end up with a B. Definitely recommend him if you are looking to prepare for the MCAT in the future. Learned a lot!
Excellent professor! Very knowledgeable in the course and passionate about teaching! Although some had problems with his lectures, I felt that he taught everything on the online textbook in a clear way and made it easier to understand the online textbook. He doesn't baby you but the tests were more than fair if you put in the effort.
McCord was extremely clear and upfront with what he expected from you and even from himself. I found his lectures tended to clear up concepts that I was confused about, and if they didn't, if I went to office hours or g-chem, I could usually get it! He's extremely sarcastic, which I loved, but I know many who didn't. I would 100% recommend him!!
Truly excellent professor! He's super knowledgable about the content, yet finds the perfect way to make chemistry engaging and easy to understand while still pushing you to really know the content. Grade based mainly (85%) on four midterms & mandatory final (all tests are multiple choice); rest was completion grades to help boost score.
McCord really knows his stuff - that being said, sometimes he goes in depth on things that don't matter and fails to cover everything you need to do well on the test. He uses his own website (gchem) as the class textbook. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are in-class clicker questions that counts towards your grade.
Had him for CH301 and CH302. Solid professor who knows what he is doing. Not the easiest to understand, but very reasonable. Just keep up with all the Learning Exercises and HW's and it will be fine. CH302 is more challenging than CH301 just because the topics are less intuitive. However, with dilligence, it is very possible to get A's all year.
Wonderful professor. Class isn't always the easiest but he is very energetic and engaging. You can tell he puts in effort. Provides helpful online resources other profs don't. FREE ebook, PPTs provided, lectures recorded. Grade: 4 exams (calculator allowed for most exams), final, online quizzes, in-class clicker questions.
All the chem classes are flipped so no matter what you'll have to do some self learning. Whenever I'm confused McCord always clears it up in lecture. Never did AP chem in high school and I got straight As on the tests. Just beware that the tests are a heavy part of your grade, homework and reef (clicker) is like 5% each only.
Hes a good teacher definitely and is funny in his lectures. As long as you keep up with the learning exercises online and do the extra practice before the tests you should do well. Also on his gchem site he has worksheets specific to each exams that you can practice on as well.
The tests are extremely hard compared to what he talks about in class. The lectures themselves are very general and do not go into specifics and are pretty boring. He uses the REEF iClicker software and does SOME problems. He doesn't do demonstrations in class either.
Dr. McCord is a solid chemistry professor. He's super funny, very articulate, and methodical. Unlike the other professors, he doesn't give live demonstrations, but it doesn't harm/help his teaching. Good guy, there are better options though.
McCord discusses a lot of general and contextual material during lecture, and he does a good job at it. The issue with him is that the tests are hardly that reflective of what's discussed in lectures and, sometimes, what's on the homework. With only up to 20 questions per test, you'll lose lots of points if you're not ready to teach yourself.
McCord makes you work for the letter grade, but it's definitely possible to get an A in his class. There's lots of opportunities to meet with TA's and a gchem website that goes in depth with all the concepts. Class is very clear but also strict on grading. He's not going to bump you up like some professors do.
McCord is a pretty awesome dude. His lectures clear up a lot of confusion, and he likes to joke around. Attendance is part of the grade with REEF questions. He drops an exam grade along with some homework grades, etc. However, he has a lot of students and can be somewhat inaccessible. Sadly, I never got to see a live demonstration in this class.
Laude is the best chem prof, no question. Try as hard as you can to get him. But if you can't... Mccord: - i found his lectures to be helpful but kind of boring - free 14-15%, rest is 5 exams, 1 dropped, and a final - Consensus is that dr. B is a better lecturer, but i had no problems with mccord. lectures relevant to tests - watch the reviews
McCord wasn't a bad professor from what I've heard about other CH301 profs. He uses REEF every day, so attendance is important. He goes off on tangents in his lectures from time to time diving into stuff beyond what's tested, so just tune out at that point. He is pretty hard on rounding grades only 92.8 and above got rounded to an A. Study Sapling!
VERY enthusiastic and absolutely hilarious. Class was fun to go to, but it was a lot of teaching yourself. Only problem is not many problems were worked in class. His course requires a lot of teaching yourself outside of class. Clicker quizzes are given every class, so make sure you are there. He drops a test and several homeworks/quizzes though.
Professor McCord is hilarious. Although he might appear sort of intimidating at first, he is actually very sweet and cares about students doing well. He tells you exactly what you should focus on for the tests and how you can practice them.
Good professor, clear organized and entertaining lectures, approachable, tests were tough but quite doable, overall would definitely recommend
McCord is a great professor, he really knows what hes talking about and can explain all the concepts very well. There are 5 tests and a final, these aren't too hard as long as you really understand the material. Also, go to the review sessions held by the TA, they are helpful and generally go over exactly what will be on the test.
I took Paul Mccord for chem301 and I loved how he taught. He puts in a lot of effort and really wants everyone to do well. He and a few other chem professors created an online interactive textbook with tons of resources so its really helpful. Tests aren't too bad and he will drop one. I loved his class
Mccord was by no means a bad professor. However, if chemistry isnt your best subject then I would consider a different professor. The lectures are not very helpful in clarifying subject and consist of odd and unorganized "doodles" There are definitely other professors who can lecture more efficiently to clarify the subject matter better.
Honestly loved McCord. He was funny and had a lot of great online resources, test prep, and study guides for his kids to use. His TA named Jimmy holds reviews before every test that are extremely helpful and are the difference between making and A and a B in my opinion. I would highly recommend.
Good teacher. Instructional and likes to joke from time to time
Unless ur Chem minded & can teach yourself everything, don't take him. His tests are harder than everything else (worth 75%). He is probs a nice guy & funny at first but not a good prof. The ppl who rated him high most likely the 1/5 who consistently got A's. I speak for the 400 others who struggled to pass the rest of the tests.
Great demeanor that makes class interesting and easy to follow along with. Good at explaining difficult concepts without being condescending.
The type of people who thrive in his class fall in any of these 3 groups: 1) AP Chem was easy for you 2) You desire a career as a chemist or researcher 3) You wish to be over prepared for the MCAT. If you don't fall in these groups, either get ready for a disproportionate amount of reading and attending office hours or take another professor.
Unlike Laude, McCord makes you work extremely hard for an A. However, I feel prepared to take on any course at UT after two semesters of brutal scholastic work with him. The reason I passed this class was because of his TA, Jimmy. Jimmy's office hours are probably the most helpful resource for the class, besides the gchem textbook (modules).
This is a flipped classroom so most of the learning is done outside of class. He writes out all of his notes in lecture, which I really like. gives tons of extra practice for tests and jimmy's (TA) review sessions are really great.
McCord is pretty nice and also really tough. Your grade is pretty much only your test grade, and his tests are brutal. You have to go to class to pass, but. even that's no guarantee. Go to his TA's reviews, its your only chance to learn anything
I took this second semester senior year (CS major). McCord is great. This is a hard class. You will study at least 8 hours for each exam (5), on top of the 8-10 hours you will put in for ever unit's homework and "learning exercises". TIP: Use KOOFERS! Doing one of his old exams will boost your grade without fail - especially the final.
McCord's class has a lot of homework - learning exercises before every class, about 1 lengthy homework a week, class Reef participation, and tests. It is not hard to do well, but it does require effort. His lectures are a little dumbed down and then the test is more difficult, but he provides so much study material and his website is very helpful.
This class is very very difficult. I had him for Ch1&2, 2 is much harder. You must THOROUGHLY do the LE's and expect to teach yourself. Do 100% of the practice material before tests, pay attention in class even though it's very boring. Tests are most of your grade, and averages are usually low 70's with no curve. It's hard, but possible to do well.
I had McCord for CH301 and got an easy A. This semester, I'm grateful to get a B-. The tests are very difficult and my only advice is to go to all of Jimmy's office hours/reviews. Theres no curve, no E.C., and he gets rude during office hours. Your average almost solely depends on how you do on the tests. Beware of test 2&3 in particular.
Dr. McCord is funny in his own way and explains concepts really well. His TA's review sessions are really helpful for the exams. There are so many LE & homework drops, 1 test drop, that there are many opportunities for you to do well. If you understand chemistry, it will be easy and a lot like CH301. Clicker questions during lecture for attendance.
The course itself requires lots of time spent outside of class doing homework and learning exercises. Does not leave much time to actually go over the material. Definitely check with Koofers/Other people who took the class since some test questions don't resemble the homework whatsoever.
You need to go to class to get the attendance points, but be ready to teach yourself everything outside of class. He does give a ton of resources though and has his own website. If you put in the work and use Jimmy's reviews you will be ok. Overall I hate chemistry, but he at least was a funny dude, just not the greatest professor.
I loved Dr. Mccord, he's pretty funny but there are easier chemistry professors out there. His exams are all structured in quest mode, as a chem major who cares about her grades I would only recommend if you're good at taking exams. He lectures a lot, you must teach yourself how to solve the hw problems and the exam problems too.
I had Mccord for chem 1 fall 2017 and he was super ok, but the class was completely teach yourself outside. I switched teachers to sparks for chem 2 and did much better in her class and mccord took a 180 and made his tests super hard and the averages on tests were horrible for chem 2. i would probably not take him because idk how he is going to be.
Dr. McCord is the archetypal grandstander. Lectures are Dr. McCord scribbling incoherently on a powerpoint app and going on 10-minute-long, irrelevant tangents to demonstrate his VAST and ABOUNDING intelligence. These mind-numbing lectures are annoyingly mandatory. Had to teach myself 100% of the material to do well on ridiculously deceptive tests
McCord is a good choice for science majors. He writes down his thought process in lectures, so it's not a boring powerpoint and manages to keep you engaged. His grading is fair, even lenient, given the amount of assignments he drops. An A is VERY DOABLE. go to Jimmy's reviews regularly, especially before the midterms, and you should be fine. 10/10
Flipped classroom teaching mostly to prepare you for lectures, he expanded on the online assignments in class. Provides sooo many helpful resources. If you study, you'll do well.
He is a very lecture heavy teacher and his lectures require your full attention or good luck passing his class. There's a lot of HW that only counts as 5% of your grade. The other 90% is exams and the other 5% is attendance. The material of 302 isn't hard but he makes it seem impossible.I personally wouldn't take him again. He tanked my GPA.
You have to teach yourself most of the material in this class but they provide many resources to make it easier. The content isn't too hard if you don't wait until the last minute and McCord is a distinguished professor. You can tell he really likes to stand in front of 400+ students and talk. A good teacher and a great entertainer.
I had a flipped class for 301 and 302, but 302 with McCord was substantially better. He did expect you to learn outside of class, but he provides a lot of resources and does examples in class to help out. I really enjoyed his class!
Great teacher but the teaching is difficult to follow. Covers the basics in class but you have to do your own stuff in order to actually understand it. Studied a lot for two of the tests and ended up failing them horribly. The second one that I didn't study as much I did okay but still not passing. Honestly, you never really know what to study.
Chemistry can be difficult just due to the subject matter but he gives you lots of opportunity to learn the material in different ways. He's a very entertaining prof.
People seem to either really like or dislike him. I like him, however, but the class itself is very difficult. He will teach things that aren't on the test, which may throw you off when you're studying. Overall, I think he's funny and interesting, but the class is really hard.
McCord knows what he's doing. Class is of course a bit tough but that's just because of the material. He's funny and tries to do demonstrations that are related to the lecture. Takes attendance with reef. Lot's of HW online that's only 10% of the grade but it's a good learning tool. Overall a solid professor.
We were given a ton of great resources to do well, and not having to use a textbook was a huge plus for me. If you do the LEs/HWs/watch his recorded lectures afterwards thoroughly, you will be well prepared for the exams. Expectations for what we needed to know were very straightforward, he doesn't try to trick you. He also drops HWs and 1 exam.
McCord is a very funny guy, but his class can be rather difficult. He gives you a lot of resources and as long as you utilize them, the tests will be somewhat easy. Go to his office hours if you are struggling with a concept.
A great prof who tries to keep things loose in a relatively tough class. There are in class quizzes that end up being 5% of the overall grade. I found myself enjoying the lectures although I can see why some don't. The "textbook" is free for this class as they give you a website with all the material in it, but it isn't used that much.
60% - 4 exams (lowest dropped) 25% - final 10% - canvas hw's (lowest 7 dropped) 5% - reef (lowest 2 sessions dropped) Most helpful: Koofers, Jimmy's powerpoint reviews, and actually working the hw problems (sry) Least helpful: Mccord's lectures (fun tho! ish), and the textbook Being able to do dimensional analysis fast makes life easier. Gl!
This class is difficult but really no different than any other chemistry class from what I've seen. Go to Jimmy's reviews, do practice problems on Koofers, and take the homeworks seriously. The tests are weighted way too much, but he lets you drop one exam. I had to see a therapist because of this class.
The tests are worth a lot, but are totally doable. I took AP chem in high school which helped a lot and got away with not studying as much. His lectures were helpful to me since he spoke and drew things out using the projector. Don't take him if you want an easy A. If you actually do the homework and pay attention in class you will get at least B's
Personality-wise, he's a solid 8 with a humorous sense of sarcasm. Bad side is his tests towards the middle of the semester get difficult, but honestly if you studied and actually READ AND DID the learning modules, which are numerous, you'd be fine. However, he does tend to be a bit abrasive, and tests are everything. STUDY HARD BEFORE TESTS!
Dr. McCord was great! He is entertaining and very easy to follow, but his tests are much more difficult than the homework. His TA Jimmy actually writes the exams, and if you go to Jimmys reviews/office hours and take the time to do the homework and study you are guaranteed an A!
McCord has a chill and hilarious style of lecturing that is both informative and entertaining. The textbook is provided online through g chem site. HW and Learning exercises give you 3 attempts each assignment, taking the highest score. There are also in class reef questions that aren't too bad since he gives hints. Go over past exercises for tests
Got a 3 on AP chemistry so I had to take chemistry again. Mccord is a solid choice for all students, but his tests are rather difficult. If you haven't taken AP, you will need to study extensively to do well on his tests. It is doable and teaches you chemistry, but if you want an easy A, take Laude.
Solid choice for pre-med students or anyone who wants to learn the material. He presents it in a no bs manner and wants his students to succeed. I honestly was not great at AP Chem, but 301 was actually pretty easy if you put in the work! Make sure you learn the material by reading the g chem website, and watching Jimmy's reviews. Good luck!
So much homework. To really read and learn the material it'll take u 2 hours a day. Just when you seem to get it you get to the test and he has made up his own questions which are NOTHING like the homeworks or LEs. He's a really cool person but horrible teacher. DO NOT take sutcliffe either. Try fakerhdine!!!
McCord is very fair in the way he teaches. His tests are kinda tricky but the HWs and the examples in class show you what to expect. He was really nice and gave us chances for extra credit on our tests and curves. You can definitely do well if you put in the work. The HWs/LEs show you correct answers but don't misuse them (if you want to do well).
McCord has a no-nonsense attitude and a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. His class, however, made me lose my will to live and slowly les to the draining of my passion for chemistry. Tests were very, very difficult and you really have to know the material 150% to pass. Fun dude but don't take his class!!!
McCord's class is challenging but he's a really good professor. He doesn't make things complicated and gives several outlets for practice and extra help. There is no required textbook which is nice because of less expenses and you get exactly what you're tested on in class.
McCord is an awesome professor! The way that he teaches is very clear and understandable, and he has you do online learning modules over the same material that he goes over in class so you get a lot of exposure to the concepts. The workload wasn't too heavy, tests were pretty straightforward, and his personality made his lectures pretty enjoyable.
I didn't take any type of chem before taking the class except the ALEKs. No textbook, but gchem website. 4 exams weighted heavy 1 gets dropped. McCord made chemistry confusing and was not clear in any way. He went over things briefly as though we already knew everything. I made it to the 3rd unit. Do NOT recommend UNLESS you took AP chem in hs.
Professor McCord is a very nice man who knows his stuff and is misunderstood by many. He is made out to be UT's pitt-bull of Chemistry, but the truth is that he is far from it. I wrote this review because I heard the pain in his voice when speaking about his course evaluations from last year. He deserves better.
McCord is a solid choice for someone trying to learn actual chemistry. I took Laude for CH301 and got the easy A but I wanted to learn some actual chemistry so I switched to McCord for CH302. As someone who never took AP Chemistry in High School this class is doable as long as you put some time into studying. Overall, McCord is down to earth.
Mccord is an extremely funny, sarcastic, but great lecturer. He takes notes in class so it's extremely easy to follow his teaching. He'll tell you exactly what questions will be on the test, sometimes even pulling example problems in class. His tests can be hard, but just study, practice, use koofers and you'll do fine. Give him a promotion pls
A great professor would recommend.
The people who hate on McCord just don't try. The required LE's and HW's really prepare you for the tests, and his lectures are always well organized. He has a blunt sense of humor, but he's also a genuinely kind man who makes Topo Chico for his wife and cares about you truly understanding the material in office hours. Deserved that promotion.
McCord is an amazing lecturer. He writes notes as he lectures which is more engaging than staring at some slides. He seems to have a bad rep that's not deserved. It's probably from students who don't want to put in the work. I managed to get an A- with absolutely no previous chem knowledge besides the ALEKS. Take him if you want to actually LEARN.
Great lectures that will teach you a lot. A decent amount of homework but not too difficult or too long. He's a good professor if you're wanting to actually learn about chemistry without having a stressful experience.
Amazing professor. His lectures really make you understand chemistry conceptually as opposed to just plug and chug type of stuff. He's a solid choice for those who are actually wanting to learn rather than get an easy A.
If you're just trying to get your science credits out of the way and don't have a propensity for chemistry, DO NOT TAKE MCCORD. He taught the majors classes for like 15 years before teaching non-majors and it shows. He's currently "teaching" us organic chemistry and my engineer boyfriend can't even figure out what's going on. Not worth your time.
He just doesn't know how to balance the difficulty of a class for nonmajor students. TBH the 304 I took last year started 1min 60 sec. And we are having tests that average around 75 every time. And he said that is just right of the level. That's way more difficult for the students who seriously didn't know chem well.
Do NOT take Chem in Context with McCord unless you have a realllly strong science background. It is the SAME material as Chem301 so just take it with Laude instead. Attendance counts for a very small percentage (5%), homework for 5%, and then tests for 90%. The office hours and review sessions didnt help me. Just take 301... please.
I'm supposedly taking Chem 304k which is a "non-science major level" chemistry class, but it this is NOT true. He teaches- if you'd even call it that- like if we are taking Chemistry 301 (science major level). His teaching method is confusing and too fast paced for students not majoring in science. Worst professor I've ever had. DON'T take him!
Although the class is somewhat difficult, I felt I learned a lot about chemistry and science in general. McCord is humorous and has a great personality, very approachable. Tests are easy if you study and you can pick the grading style which benefits you the most.
Chemistry in Context... but where's the context? DON'T take this if you're a non-major looking for an easy credit (unless you're naturally gifted in the art of chemistry). He assumes we already know what he's talking about, blowing through lessons with no structure and teaching it like an advanced course. I just wanted to learn about global warming
I have no idea whats happening most of the time. And I have a 4.00 gpa. For now.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. I signed up for chemistry in context for a reason... I am not a chemistry major. McCord gives us the same exact work as general chemistry. The TA has told us the tests are designed for us to fail. What is the point in this? He doesn't teach; he just shows off his textbook website DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
CH305 with McCord was honestly so much better than I thought it would be! As someone who struggles with Chemistry, I feel like he kept it to the basics and made it easy to understand. He wrote the online textbook himself and it's super short and FREE! Do the homework and read his book and you should be fine!
McCord is a funny guy but he taught 304 (for non-majors) like a regular chemistry class. Many of us have had no chemistry experience and were left scrambling, with test questions being "aimed to make students fail" and an all-over-the-place teaching style. I ended up teaching myself and barely scraping by. Not for my major, this took up all my time
It's not an easy class but it's also significantly easier than Chemistry for STEM majors. There's probably an easy science credit, but McCord is fun and his expectations are clear. He's a solid choice to fulfill your natural science credit.
I took this class to fulfill one of my science requirements. I took AP Chem in HS and personally thought it was very easy, but I know a few other people struggled. I barely tried and got an A and made 90s-100s on all of the tests. The tests are multiple choice and the final is optional if you are okay with your grades from your other exams.
Daily quizzes, slightly harder than average tests for non-majors, and generous on homework attempts to give you enough chances to get a 100. This class does get harder and a lot more confusing as the semester goes along. If you don't pay attention, better find some good YT videos to teach yourself.
Very test heavy. In some personal circumstances, he was not empathetic and very rude. Terrible at replying to emails. Maybe it's just a chemistry department thing, but I would definitely not take him again. Took for my core science credit. If this class wasn't pass fail given COVID-19, it would totally ruin my GPA.
Says he won't teach the course like a major's course, then teaches it like a major's course anyways. Lectures are fairly linear, but he expects you to just "get" things and moves too fast for the class to ask questions. Lots of homework, very test-heavy. Almost no accommodations for COVID crisis.
I love this guy, he's hilarious. Jimmy is an awesome TA too. Only reason why you wouldn't do good in this class is if you don't study. Material is kinda hard if you don't have a science background. If you did well in HS chem you should be fine. It helps to actually be interested too. I wish he taught another class so I could take him again.
Professor McCord is great! He's a good lecturer and really does want to see his students do well. Definitely take him to knock out this part of the core curriculum. You do have to work to get an A, but McCord explains the material very well. Don't be lazy, go to lecture, and you'll get an A.
this class is reasonable. lectures can get a bit dry/complicated. he's funny, though. jimmy's review sessions are a godsend. the tests are fair and easy. HS chem is a good background. if all else fails, go to organic chemistry tutor on youtube for some extra help, too.
McCord is a solid professor. Apparently his tests used to be HARD, but now they are mostly in line with the rest of the CH301 professors excepting 1-2 questions (other professors do the same thing). So, you don't have too much to worry about as far as that goes. He's a funny lecturer and a good one, though he can be a bit hard to keep up with.
Go to Jimmy's review sessions, go to Jimmy's review sessions, go to Jimmy's review sessions
As someone who didn't take AP chem, it was definitely quite a bit of catching up, but if you reach out to McCord and his TA, Jimmy, via email, office hours, or after class, things will be a lot better. Jimmy does review sessions and practice exams are given out which help quite a bit! I recommend the Sanger Learning Center as well!
Mccord was a solid professor. He gave good lectures but I also had to look up and study on my own quite a bit. His TA, Jimmy, was also great. I would HIGHLY recommend going to his review sessions and studying that content. Biggest downside is this is a non major class but it still requires a hefty amount of work.
McCord was accommodating to the pandemic by canceling one of our tests which was scheduled before spring break. He really does care about his students. He also made sure we paid as little as possible for his class ie. free textbook and no clickers. Tests are very similar to the practice exams and quizzes pertained to material learned during lecture
doing the homework (2 per unit) + jimmy's review + read txtbk A in class. REALLY GOOD SCIENCE CREDIT. if you just took 304K I would say this class has more memorizing of stuff. you have so much opportunity to get an A as long as you do well on tests. I never didn't get a 100 on homework because you have 3 chances.
Let's be clear, he definitely gave accommodations for COVID-19. He is smart and the lectures tell you what you need to know. Jimmy's review sessions also do a great job at preparing you for the exams. These classes were some of my easiest science credits. Just know he won't give an A away for free.
McCord spends about a quarter of the lecture time complaining that students are "whiners" (irony?). You can do well if you really learn to teach yourself the material, but don't expect this to be a class where the professor meets you half way. Also, got to say, but he seems kind of smug and full of himself.
Literally take any other professor. I took him because I heard good things but COVID did not do him well. He is incredibly rude and does not give you the resources to pass. There was an average of 50-70 on each exam and he either thought it was good or would yell at us for 30 minutes of class. Do not expect to get an A unless chemistry is your life
I think teaching a summer course served as a disservice to his teaching style. He sort of expected a lot of the material to instantly make sense to students, despite some seeing the material for the first time. Maybe during the fall he is better and more thorough, but I honestly never felt like the homework reflected the exams. DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS
I really liked Dr. McCord. I thought he was super funny, and I could tell he truly cared about his students. The class is heavily weighted when it comes to testing, so if you want an A in the class you don't really have room to bomb any of the tests. The class is hard to understand if you skip it.
I thought McCord was a great teacher. I learned so much in this class, but I did have to work for it. He makes all the materials free and is very organized. Drops some of your lowest grades and has two other extra credit assignments at the end. He does teach fast so you'll have to pay attention and really look over the material before the test.
His content can be challenging, but I wouldn't have wanted any other prof for this class. He's really funny in a dad sort of way- he may give you some long motivational speeches but he really cares about his students. He also made sure we never had to pay for a textbook, made cute animations for us in class, and was pretty hilarious.
McCord is a very poor teacher. He teaches both majors and non majors and I think sometimes he forgets that we are his non-majors. He glosses over basics, goes off on confusing tangents regarding materials we don't need to know, and doesn't explain well. He gets mad when people aren't at office hours but then he's condescending when asked questions
I have nothing good to say about him.He is a TERRIBLE professor. His lectures are kind of hard to follow at times and he goes too quickly. He barely goes over important topics and then they'll be on the exam.He curses a lot and has referred to his other students as "whiny and b****y". I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. I absolutely hated it.
Study guides were not helpful. My class averaged 70s on every exam
Chemistry is a hard class in general, I felt like McCord was a great professor. His lectures were good, homework was good too and matched up to the tests. You'll need to put in a decent amount of effort in order to get a higher grade than the one I did, but I recommend. He cares and his talks after tests pushed me to do better.
Dr. McCord made chemistry bearable for me. He is one of the few professors at UT that actually gives lecture on topics, DO NOT miss lectures since the material can be hard to understand. He is really understandable and cares for his students. If you have the opportunity to take his class do it because you will learn lots with him!
This professor was awful. My semester the class averaged high Ds and low Cs. If you are going to preach about how all of your students get As and Bs and how it's an easy class then at least be accommodating when you notice something is going wrong. The information on the study guides was rarely on the exams and the TA was not helpful.
This class was awful. I did not understand half of what his lectures consisted of and his TA's questions are so tough! Only one of the tests we took actually seemed like it was made for non-majors. Very condescending and will not be understanding if you are struggling on a topic. Studying for his tests felt like a nightmare. Would not recommend!!!
McCord was honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. The one thing that puts most people off is his brash sense of humor and 'tough love' type of talks. But all tests are exactly what he emphasizes in lecture. And he even gave 10-15 point curves and changed the grading policy halfway through the semester to help boost our grades.
If you're not naturally good at chem, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The exam averages were almost always failing. Says that it is an easy class yet teaches it like a majors course. Exams are worth 80% one is dropped but if you do bad on another one, good luck. There were 5+ drops in this class and he said he hopes it bites them in the a**.
Honestly, a lot of the reviews of CH301N are very negative, yet the class isn't difficult to do well in. Dr. McCord literally created his own website with his own textbook - which is essentially all you need to know for the tests. If you attend lectures and do the homework, you will be fine. I definitely recommend for a good science credit.
This has been the worst class I've taken in college. I wouldn't recommend if you only took chem sophophmore year of highschool because he expects you to know a lot already. These good reviews in here are probably from those who get chemistry naturally/took AP chem senior year. If you're not really a science person, DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!
Definitely a class that you need to do work on every day in order to feel confident in the material. However, it became one of my favorite classes to attend and do work for. Exams weigh a lot, so if you're not a good test taker be wary. He has multiple textbooks for free on his website, which is pretty cool.
I was scared by bad reviews and AP Chem, but his strong personality is to wake us up and get us passionate for chem. Really nice when we talk after class. Exams don't try to trick you and I actually learn. Reviewing hw before exams got me straight 100s. He actually cares about your learning and is just misunderstood. Definitely considering for 302!
LOVE DR. MCCORD! He has so many resources available, just take the time to study the content. Tests are very similar to the homeworks. He gets so passionate about the topic and genuinely wants to set his students up for success. Very organized content and doesn't dock for late submissions, just turn in before test. Study and you will do well.
Funny, I guess, not amazing but I learned. Highly recommend for the credit.
He is the best professor ever, trust me. Exams are nearly the same as HW, and if you review content after lecture, it is easy A! Gonna take him for CH 302 for sure
Chemistry is a lot, but he provides you with enough resources to get a good grade (I didn't do AP Chem but did AP Physics). The 4 tests are all MC which is great for guessing but you HAVE to do well on them to get an A, one is dropped. Go to discussion sessions, use quizlet to ensure 100 on HWs, and use his stash on the 2018 website for old tests.
I love him! His lectures may seem confusing and weirdly formatted at first, but you will get used to it. Also, he is all for free education which makes his class even better! As for actual teaching wise, he is very knowledgeable in his field and explains very well! He is also hilarious in a dad way- but really in a good way! 100% recommend!
One of the most enthusiastic chem professors you're going to get here. Truly knows what he's talking about and explains things in a very dumbed-down way that makes it impossible not to get. The TA's were meh. I slacked off quite a bit and still managed to pass so if you have a single crumb of work ethic you should be okay.
McCord was definitely one of my favorite professors this semester. His lectures are engaging and fun, and although he cusses (which some take issue with), he really does mean well and pushes you to be the best you can be. Also, everything is free! No course packet, just his website!
My favorite professor. Great taste in music :) - I thought the resources he provided were great and really helped me learn and understand chemistry. Just be on top of studying a little before each test- and definitely go to those day before TA review sessions. The questions they go over look just like the test. Life savers.
Dr. McCord is hilarious and has a very badass style to him. His lectures are pretty solid, but make sure you keep up with what he's saying as he writes notes or else you could be confused. Tests are MC only and most of the test material is on his website, so you won't have to buy the textbook. Definitely recommend him.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but clicker questions are a grade at the end of every lecture. Uses an online textbook with a ton of info. I felt like I mostly taught myself this semester with the required learning exercises and homework. Lectures went fast and had no practice Q's so I found it hard to retain info.
I really liked Dr. McCord. He's very funny and energetic during lectures. He was very straightforward about the material we needed to know, and he prides himself on his class being completely free for students. The class was a bit fast-paced at times but otherwise manageable. I highly recommend him. In fact, I'll be taking him again for Chem 302.
McCord is AWESOME. I didnt take chemistry classes in high school, this was my first time ever taking chemistry and it was definitely a challenge. Go to office hours (actually learn the material first, have questions), this will make the biggest difference. Gave extra credit at the end of the semester + it's clear he knows what he's talking about.
McCord obviously knows his chemistry. But to do well in his class, you will need to read his learning exercises before his lectures, where he will kinda reinforce those concepts. He has so many online resources to use. He's a very funny and passionate lecturer, but make sure you pay close attention. Recommend him for both 301 and 302.
McCord is great. Like seriously. Let me tell you about the McCord effect. Your first exam in his class might go HORRIBLE, but it's only uphill from there. You learn how to self-study REALLY well, and if you pay attention to his lectures, you gain a deep understanding of the topics. Once he resonates with you, you'll perform INCREDIBLY in his class.
very good at conceptual explanations, but is a big supporter of tough love. the mccord effect is real, you learn how to study well after you bomb the first test (usually). i had the trio last semester and wasn't a fan, but i loved mccord. if you study you will get an a
I took this course the fall of my freshman year and talk about a welcome to college moment. In order to pass you have to learn the science as Dr.McCord preached throughout the year. There are no tricks or gimmicks to pass the class, you have to be willing to put in the work but McCord does a great job of teaching what must be understood. 10/10
Took McCord in Fall 22 and he is definitely my favorite professor. Very tough love type of personality. His lectures teach you a lot. If you review lecture notes and homework then the exams aren't too bad at all. Plus he is really funny in my opinion.
I took Dr. McCord for CH301 last semester, and I'm just here to rave about him again. He's a wonderful professor and put a lot of thought and effort into his class. He's very straightforward about the material and his lectures were very engaging. So sad that he's retiring :(.
king retired a few years ago but he was one of my favorite professors in college
Took Professor McCord during my Freshman Year, Fall 2022. I'm so glad I took Professor McCord before he retired because he was the absolute GOAT. Favorite class of my college career and the way he taught it was so amazing. I wish all my professors taught like him! Keep slaying in retirement!
