BEST PROF EVER!!!! Take the course with him.
Fantastic instructor. Fantastic!
Paul is a good person, however, he rushes through material without being very clear in his explanations. Teaching will come with practice but right now he is not a great teacher.
He's a good prof. Notes are vague but try and listen to his explanation as you write down the notes. The explanation is usually quite good, and he gives helpful tricks to help you remember material. Course itself is hard, lots of material, and cumulative. Added bonus, he's nice to look at :)
SO hot best anatomy prof ever!!
Best professor EVER! I mean EVER! Notes were very clear and concise! Made the course a pleasure. Had Ryan as a T.A. he was AWESOME! If you have a chance take it with these two do it!!!!!

Paul messing is a rgeat teacher, he is very helpful and makes people laugh, keep him around :)
i was not a fan, i found him to breeze over a lot of the course, he uses the word ''obvious'' all the time, when it isn't obvious to us!! I taught most of the course to myself from the textbook, i would highly suggest opting for a different prof.
Very interesting class and Mr. Messing was a great teacher!
Great prof! Notes are crystal clear and if you study them the exams are easy!
One of the better profs Ive come into contact with. Uses powerpoint for notes and keeps them clear and to the point. Very helpful and easy to get into contact with. I would highly recommend taking any courses you can with him!
i love paul
Tough class. Eliminates the weak students after the first exam. Make sure you know the labs and make cue cards for the muscles. Material is straight forward. He is the best prof out of the 3 to take Anatomy with. Make sure you study as the material is an extreme amount to know. Power point style notes and use the textbook.
GREAT! JUST GREAT!
He was the best prof ever!
Best instructor ever!!! He makes the course a lot easier. Humorous too :)
Amazing prof, he clearly tries to make sure everyone understands, willing answers any questions, super approachable. The course itself is difficult but he makes the most of it. Love him!
Easily the best instructor to take anatomy with. Notes are straightforward. Very helpful and polite. Know muscle origins/insertions well for lab exam. Txtbook diagrams & lab models useful for lab portion of final and enhanced understanding of notes. Some (BUT NOT ALL) lab models/posters/slides posted on JUMP. Go to ALL labs and lectures to do well
If you're going to take BIOl1410 this is the prof to take it with, his explanations are clear concise and he give hints to remember this. The key to passing this class is joining a study group the more you talk about it the easier it becomes to remember. I got an A this way, goodluck.
Anatomy is a hard enough course with tons of information to know, but Paul explains everything so well! He uses a lot of images which help to understand, mnemonics, and he has powerpoint slides!
An overall good prof. He often goes off topic and discusses things beyond the knowledge you need to know (which can be confusing) but he taught anatomy very well! :)
Best professor I've had at the UofM. Always approachable outside and after class. Crystal clear explanations and incorporates facts to help you better understand and appreciate the material. Take class with him for sure! Fair exams but require details so study hard.. not difficult to do if you're interested in Anatomy. My fav class all year!
Great prof for Physiology. Lecture notes and explanations were clear and he is very approachable. Also keeps interest with use of humour. Would definitely recommend him!
Very organized and clear speaking. He definitely knows what he is talking about. He tries to make the course funny and enjoyable. The only complaint I have of him is that he goes through notes very fast and you find yourself getting down the notes just in time before he switches slides.
Messing is a decent professor. I just think his notes are very confusing and so do quite a few people. He is constantly using abbreviations and arrows. The other professor has better notes, but he is more entertaining.
Great prof! Super interesting to listen to, very helpful in class and in the labs as well. Take him if you have a choice for anatomy!
Excellent professor. Very helpful, takes genuine interest in individual students. Ppt notes but format can make material unclear. Text can help clarify some material. Exams questions are fair. Reading lab manual sufficient for answering lab questions on exams (no separate lab exam). Must attend all lectures. Do not fall behind, topics compound
AMAZING PROF! So helpful! Class has a lot of material but you know exactly what material is testable before going into the exam.
Paul is a great prof. In Anatomy, there is so much to know, but he made all the info really clear and concise and presented it in an understandable way. He was very clear about what was testable material, and I did very well on the exam because of this. He did his best to make lectures entertaining, and was always available to answer questions.
He is pretty good. I have no complains. But holy, this course is hardcore. Watch out! It is so much harder than Anatomy. I never imagined a course this hard. I'm glad it's all over.
Really great instructor. Great, clear speaking voice. Kept notes clear and simple. Very helpful in and out of class. Also pretty cute.
Really great professor, i took the class in the summer session and had him for the first portion and Jennifer Mcleese for the second portion of the course. He was really clear & easy to understand. The pace was fast, but it was so much easier to understand because he used ppt slides, so headings etc were very obvious, unlike the course with Mcleese.
Very good professor! He made things easier to understand even though the course was a very difficult course. He is the first prof that I have seen where the whole class gave him a round of applause at the end!
Best prof I've ever had, second time taking anatomy and I can honestly say that if I'd had him the first time would have had a far better mark. Excellent explanations, mneumonics, incorporation of different diagrams. and hot.
Amazing. Had him for both BIOL 1410 and then I literally squealed with happiness when I found out he was taking over my Biol 1412 course. He is one of the best profs I've ever had. Funny, helpful, clear and concise, he uses tons of examples and makes it so much easier to get A's in tough courses. Run--don't walk--to have him as a prof.
I loved Paul! He was very organized which made learning anatomy easier. He was very well at explaining in his lectures, and used lots of figures to get the main points across. He used humor to make the class funny when he could. Take anatomy with this prof! Even if you find the course boring he is sure nice to look at!
Easy in the eyes, but not a helpful teacher. Whenever I email a question he never answers it properly.
Great professor! Always ready to answer question during or after classes and is very helpful in the labs. Physiology is a very hard course and Paul is by far the best one to teach it.
Notes are very good and have very helpful diagrams. Explains things well. If you have the option, get him for anatomy and physiology - ive had other profs and he is by far the best for those courses.
He is seriously awesome! He's young and really nice! He's really young, makes his classes interesting and funny whilst being very informative! Definitely recommend you all to take a class with him! :D
He would put up the notes and basically talk to himself while everyone focuses on writing the notes. You just have to basically study your notes and understand it to pass the exam.
Great prof!
I think hes the best person to take anatomy with. The course is very demanding, but he makes it the best he can, hes probably the least of all evils. You definitely have to study hard though! You can get an A, but you gotta work for it, he makes sure of that!
He has the best n organized note. Very great prof for anatomy. Just depend on ur notes, then the textbook for the figures/models.
His notes were clear and covered everything that we were expected to know. My only use of the textbook was looking at figures to help me get a visual of what the notes were talking about. The exams were fair and I didn't think that they were too difficult.
Paul was a great prof !You need to attend lectures because midterms and exams are solely based on notes taken in class. Notes are straight forward and clear. He does talk fast however he is still very clear in his explanations. He is funny and is very helpful outside of class. Prof was great however the course in general was pretty difficult.
Paul is the best prof I ever had. I did great in his course because works really hard to make sure that students understand the material by also keeping the class enjoyable by using a bit of humour to make the class interesting and fun. I would highly recommend this course to anyone!
Paul was an excellent prof, he made the course content interesting and made sure that you understood the content. His humour and easy going demeanour made the class enjoyable and a pleasure to attend. I would highly recommend any of his courses and hope to have him as a prof again!
Paul is an excellent prof. His notes are super clear and he knows his stuff very well. He is so helpful if you have questions during the lecture or during office hours. He made the class interesting and he has a sense of humor so no one gets to sleep in class. I would definitely recommend him for any one looking for A+ grade
One of the best profs at U of M! Extremely clear notes help you get through this difficult class. Join a study group and you're on your way to an A or A+! Always approachable and available to help after class. And cute.
Love him! He's very helpful and easy on the eyes. Notes are clear :)
Explains things in better detail if you go after class. Definitely hot.
very nice prof and always willing to help. took the course over the summer session and he only based our exams off his notes. always bought in guest lectures which made the class extra interesting :D
Gives great instructions, good explanations, and lectures are interesting and he is funny He's also very nice to make conversation with and good looking
he's good
Paul is a great prof, his notes are clear and easy to understand. this is my second time taken anatomy (dropped it last year because i had mclesse and her notes were horrible) Paul is the reason i have an A this time. He always asks if anyone has questions and is very helpful when you ask. best prof I've had for sure
I didn't do so hot in this class but no matter what Paul was there to help out as much as possible.
He's hot, lively & enthusiastic during lecture. He also tells you what will be on the exams and common mistakes students make so you can avoid them. You definitely do have to study for the class though, it's a lot of material. His notes point out what you have to know if you're reading along with the textbook.
He is a great prof, really entertaining and makes little doodles and acronyms to help you remember all the information. Not an easy course but he makes it interesting.
He's an incredible prof. Extremely clear with his notes and lectures. Definitely knows what he's talking about and is actually pretty funny too! (and not too bad on the eyes! ;)
He is an amazing prof. He gives out online notes and then goes over them in class. He is hilarious, and such an amazing prof!
Had both Paul and Mcleese as a split semester. Both are super nice and know their stuff, however Paul's notes are much more clear, and he is alot more lively, especially for an 830 class. He is really clear, answers questions very well and always stops to make sure everyone understands it. tests all based on notes, and extremely interesting
Amazing professor. Keeps you interested and engaged in the lectures. Some of the most organized notes I've seen at the U of M! When it comes to helpfulness, he really did save my semester. All-around fantastic professor.
Obviously a tough course just from the amount of subject matter there is but he is a great teacher and makes it all pretty easy to understand then the memorization is all you. If you put the time in the grade will come but it's easy to get intimidated. However his notes are very organized, he's super helpful and pretty funny too. Made the class fun
Great prof! He gives clear explanations on given topics and seems very enthusiastic about teaching the course. He's funny too. :) Midterms and final exam are a bit difficult, so make sure to study hard!
He knows what he's doing and does it efficiently. He hands out really clear and precise notes so you will know exactly what to study. He stresses that making connections between concepts (instead of simply memorizing) helps a lot. He's pretty funny in class, too! Listen well, don't think of the course as difficult, (it's not) and you'll get an A+!
His notes are clear and he gives them to you! He only tests on what is in the notes. Memorize these and you'll pass with flying colors.
Labs are super straight forward. Notes are great and clear! There are never any tricks as long as you study the notes that are posted!
Really great notes! However, he does really talk too fast. Oftentimes, I couldn't keep up with his pace because I had to write notes at the same time.
Such an amazing prof. His lecture slides are very clear and helpful, and he provides examples that help clarify sometimes confusing topics. He always encourages you to ask questions, and makes sure to explain it until you understand it. My favourite university prof by far.
such a great prof. listens to you, and will help you whenever you need it. GOOD LOOKING
his notes are extremely organized, and diagrams are used in his powerpoint lectures are helpful. a very good prof, but keep in mind he talks super fast and speeds through the material.
He is easily the best prof I'ver ever had. He is concise and to the point in his lectures. He will explain things in different ways until you understand them. In his lectures he does talk really fast, so it's good to pay attention and attend the lectures.
THE BEST PROF. Easy A+ if you read the notes and ask questions when you have them. He is so approachable and really cares for his students. Such a change from other profs!!
Material is not easy however he makes is a lot easier to understand. Notes are online but he gives great advice & hints for exams so do not miss a class. He is funny and constantly promotes students to ask questions. Only one midterm and final for grades so no chance to slack off.
Loved Him! Paul is always willing to help but one thing that I did notice was that he talked really fast. There is a lot of material that is covered and hard to keep on top of. I found the midterm to be really hard, harder then the final for sure. Study lots and memorize those notes!
Good prof but speaks fast. Notes are great. Gives lots of exam hints in class. Take anatomy with Paul if you can.
Took BIOL 2300 in the summer.. GREAT DECISION. His exams are based primarily on the notes given in class and guest lectures. But guest lecture questions are not as extensive. Lab assignments were simple and straight forward and he's there to answer any questions. Opens your eyes to the possibilities in biology. Easiest A+ for a second year course.
Excellent professor, even brings in guest speakers to make the course even more interesting. Highly recommended.
Great prof, super approachable and friendly. His lectures notes and slides make it easier to follow and understand with very helpful diagrams. Highly suggest to ask questions when you have them and to read the textbook for help or clarification. As long as you're dedicated, attend class and study.. you'll do great!
Great prof! Very funny and a very nice guy. Very organized and follows the syllabus at a good pace. He's always available to ask questions via email or in person and shows up to labs to check in with students. Only downside is he talks very fast so taking notes can be challenging sometimes.
This prof is by far one of the best I have ever had! His lectures were clear and organized. he used diagrams in class to help explain the print out lecture notes. There were very little trick questions on the midterms and final. You definitely need to keep up the material or you will fall far behind! I highly recommend this prof
bomb diggity
TALKS WAY TOO FAST
A lot of information to know for course, he speaks very scientific and hard to understand when he's going so fast. Funny guy who cares about his students learning but needs to slow down and go over topics to make them a bit more interesting
The notes he posts on UM Learn are excellent! However as many others have previously said, he does talk very fast during the lectures. Just study off of his notes thoroughly on your own time and you should be fine. I found the lab exam to be the hardest part of this course, but the midterms are based exactly off of the lecture notes.
His lectures were good, but very unclear at times. Talks very fast. Didn't like his style of notes
Definitely a great professor, clear notes and class wasn't boring. If you put in the effort and study you will get an A.
Lectures are interesting, but sometimes talks very quickly. Very willing to help after class of in office hours. Since the course has so much content, staying on top of everything is essential- If you fall behind, you won't catch up. Midterms and tests are difficult but if you really study you should do fine.
Absolutely hilarious prof. Makes jokes with several terms per lecture and it can actually help to remember terms and processes. Understanding and clear with his explanations. Also answers any questions you have before, after, and even during class.
Midterms are hard and this course will require everything you have but this prof will make it better. Talks fast but will give you everything that you need. Highly recommend.
Funniest prof and gives excellent explanations. Draws out drawings for you and is willing to spend time with you to explain concepts to your understanding. Posts notes online and they're awesome! Exams are tough only because it's a lot of material. Be prepared to put your life to studying this class if you want an A.
He talks super fast that there are times it's as if he's blabbering to himself. It's best to sit in front. He's very helpful though and very approachable. He's also very smart in a way that he knows the lectures and topics very well and can easily answer any questions you have for him unless it's clearly out of his expertise.
The guy's hilarious and the humor helps to acquire ways to remember certain processes and terms. Though he talks kinda quick, as long as you can jot notes down to add to the printed notes at a good pace, it'll be a pretty decent class with lots of material to study and review.
goes over material very quickly and talks extremly fast, it is easy to get lost
Very animated and friendly. Gives lectures like he's just taken a triple espresso shot. Very easy to talk to outside of class and always tries to help out during labs. Exams were fair, all multiple choice. To do well, you must know all of the small details from lectures.
First thing is that he talks super fast LOL so brace yourself Yeah hes nice to look at but I can copy and paste the notes to a voice reader and it is the same thing you will get from going to pauls lectures Gluck
Fun lectures!
He's really hot. He caught me during an Anatomy Lab (dissection of a rat) as I was musophobic and fainted upon the sight of the tail. He was really nice and gentleman about it. He talks really fast in class though, but his notes are pretty organized. You just gotta try to not admire the face too much to be able to keep up with the lecture.
Took a summer course with him and he's awesome. He talks fast but will slow down if you ask him. He's super hot too hehe. Definitely recommend him as a prof.
Really good prof. Explained things really well and used lots of helpful analogies. Although it was a heavy course load he made sure to get through everything and explain everything so that everyone could understand.
Very bad prof. His lectures are very confusing. I had to teach myself using the textbook because he always just made me more confused. Also, he talks way too fast which made it even harder to understand the material.
Gave very bad explanations and talked so fast I was barely able to understand him. Material for this course is hard and he would just whip through the material because he was lazy and wanted to let us out early from class
I have Paul and he is very clear with explaining the notes and he gives you helpful tips of how to remember some of the content. And so far he is my favourite prof. He never makes class boring and he draws pictures to help explain the notes. I recommend this prof if you are taking BIOL 1410. He is willing to help if things are unclear.
Paul does an excellent job explaining the notes and provides students with tips in order to remember some of the content. Although he talks quickly, his notes are organized and his use of humour throughout the lecture make them entertaining and bearable. I strongly recommend Paul if you are taking BIOL 1410.
He talks way too fast in his lectures and often times his thoughts get ahead of him and he jumbles up his words. All though he is great eye candy (and that can get distracting) he does know his material, just hard to follow him from time to time. I stopped attending his lectures and did the course work at home from a text book
I didn't really like him as much. I felt like he just read off his notes and always tells the class if they have any questions to please raise their hand. Literally, that line was repeated 13234 times every class. He is an average prof. Not bad, but not the best in my opinion.
Paul is one of my favorite profs at U of M! He tried to make lectures enjoyable! But he talks really fast! His notes are great and if you just memorize them you'll be great for the exam! He's super willing to help you after class and is great at answering questions! I loved him!
As a first year student, I found Paul to be a wonderful professor. His exams are reasonable, he's always willing to talk with students during/after class, & he adds humor to lectures making it easier to remember things. He's a breath of fresh air & really cares about students. Notes are posted online, so there's no need to take them! ATTEND CLASS.
I like how Paul teaches anatomy. He adds humor to the lectures so it's not super boring and his explanations are crystal clear. He is willing to answer any questions during or after the lecture. He also has tips to how to remember some of the information so attend class. He also tells you what to watch out for on the exam. :)
Great Prof, highly recommended for a first year student!
His lecture notes are very clear, easy to follow . The lecture notes are always available on UM Learn so if you miss a class it's not a big deal. He is very encouraging and makes the lectures enjoyable. I liked his lectures so much I switched my schedule around so I could be in his BIOL1412.
Put in the work and you will do well! Labs are really informative and fun
Paul is very enthusiastic and excited during his lectures. You can tell he's very interested in anatomy and physiology. He clearly cares about his student's well being because he makes sure everybody knows they can ask questions to him at any time before, during or after class. Also helps that he's super cute
Did not do a good job of teaching this course. Anatomy has lots of material and can be very confusing and he did a very bad job of explaining the topics in this course. He always drew diagrams on the overhead that no one understood and made people more confused. Also talks way too fast so you have to reteach the topics to yourself from the textbook
I was very disappointed by this prof. He seemed like he would be a good teacher, but I found that he had only one way of explaining things and went extremely fast through the material. Talks way too quickly making it even more difficult to understand the lectures. Had to reteach the material to myself from the textbook. Do not recommend this prof
Excellent prof! Thoroughly explains material, very funny, and is willing to help students anytime. I would recommend showing up to lectures however, because he is fairly fast paced.
Passionate about his area of expertise, does speak pretty fast in class but you get used to it. He's approachable and seems concerned if you do well.
I really enjoy him and his teaching style! Hes is always in a positive mood, speaks clear and likes to joke around. He uses a lot of diagrams and pictures when explaining things which I find very useful. He seems to know the material really well and always explains the notes instead of just reading off the slides like some other profs do!
Paul is a VERY fast talker... thats the biggest con to his lectures. If he slowed down, he could be one of the best professors in the school. He is very friendly and easy to approach, however whenever you ask a question sometimes he just says to "draw it out". But physiology is a hard course, its not just the prof, you need to put the work in too.
Great prof. He jokes a lot in class to keep things light. Textbook only needed for extra help.
Paul is super friendly and explains things very well but teaches some very indepth classes so come prepared having reviewed the notes and looked at any figures laid out in the syllabus. He was easy to talk to and get a hold of in person or by email. I took this class in Summer and got an easy A+. Be prepared to study though.
Paul was one of my favorite professors!!! he is extremely approachable and tries his best to bring humour to class. the biggest pro to his lectures is that he draws pictures to illustrate the lessons! he does talk really fast but you can here him clearly and hes ALWAYS available after class with clear explanations
The perfect voice for a professor
Paul is the absolute best prof and I highly recommend taking this course with him. Definitely attend class. He will elaborate on his notes to help you clearly understand the content as well as draw pictures to help you visually see what it is that he is teaching you. I didn't use the textbook during this class and you can google images if needed.
Probably one of my favourite profs! He knows a lot about what he teaches and his notes are clear and easy to follow. Makes jokes to keep thing interesting. Down side is he has a tendency to talk fast, but you can always ask him to slow down. Test are easy if you study.
Really great dude. Very nice and explains very well. His notes are top notch so if you need to miss a class here and there you won't be behind at all. He is defs the best prof for this class. If you can take it with him, do it. The class averages are always better with him.
Great prof! Explains everything clearly and posts his notes online. Makes lectures extremely interesting and is always willing to help you no matter what. Best prof at the university and would suggest him for any course! Exams are extremely heavy and requires lots of studying but he is willing to help you whenever. Would take his class again!
Anatomy has lots of memorization but i did not find the course difficult at all! Paul made it a very enjoyable class. He is super funny, friendly, and is easy to listen too. The only critique is he does talk fast but it didn't bother me. plus he's SUPER cute!!!
Good guy, kinda bad at directly answering questions and is a little scatterbrained sometimes ( changes his train of thought or given example often) but overall pretty funny and gives good notes
Hard courses but amazing prof !
Dr. Messing is very approachable and gives great lectures, however material doesn't go above and beyond notes so I didn't find class necessary. They also go over the info really fast, making it hard to benefit from class time.
Let me be clear, this review is for Paul's ability to teach ECOLOGY. He does not seem to care at all about this course (he doesn't usually teach it) and you can tell. The notes are not made well and has an unusually high weight toward guest lectures to teach half of his course.
We had more guest lectures than course material on the exams because he didn't teach very often. Made for interesting lectures, but we didn't get through all the material. Labs are quick but a lot of marks come from lab reports, take the time to do them well. Very approachable, ask questions about anything you're unsure about before handing it in.
The class itself is not hard, but his grading is SUPER picky. The majority of the class was taught by guest lecturers (half of which didn't seem to relate to ecology) so now I know more about birds than ecology. When Paul did teach the class, he would race through multiple lectures in a single class. Do not underestimate this course.
He's a good prof, super nice, easily found at the hub prior to lunch lectures, not my style of lecture notes but they cover what you need to know.
He is ok. Speaks loud so everyone can hear clearly. Makes a lots of students laugh if you consider yourself one of the people who can't take class seriously because of some random thing that happened.
Paul was awesome and one of the best profs I've ever had. He made lectures fun and interesting. Explained things well. His notes that he posts are perfect and is all you need to know for the tests and exams. Occasionally he talked super fast or slurred his words together. Other then that he is fantastic!!
Talks a little fast. Doesn't answer questions properly. But has very good explanations in general lecture. Just study the notes and practice HARD. The practice exam is way more confusing than actual exams and so go to bugs.
Paul does his best everyday to make anatomy tolerable. The class has a ton of content, but Paul is great at tying concepts together to help you understand as much as possible. Hes got great jokes, energetic, and heck Id even be down to grab a drink with him. Hes all around a really good guy!
Great prof. Good speaker, accessible outside of class, has clear and detailed notes. Is a prof who wants to make sure all the students understand the material thoroughly. Sometimes doesn't have clear answers to questions but most of the content is pretty straight forward and very well taught.
Paul is a super funny and nice guy who makes the boring lectures easier to sit through. The best thing about Paul is that he's VERY CLEAR on what will be on the exam. I attended all lectures but his notes are so detailed and contain all the information you need, so really attendance didn't feel mandatory. An incredible amount of info so study hard!
Very knowledgeable, threw in some comedy to keep the lectures interesting. There is a TON of material, but lecture exams only tested on what was in his notes. I would suggest reviewing frequently and adding to the notes, as the course moves along quite fast-paced with many names and descriptions that you're expected to have memorized.
He makes class fun, teaches tricks to remember things, emphasizes on exam material, clear and loud, can sometimes be fast but encourages students to let him know and adjusts accordingly, had amazing notes. Awesome prof for a hard course, would recommend him.
Best professor you can have for Anatomy. 10/10 recommend him, he dummies it down to simple terms so it is easy to understand a hard course. He is available outside of class and gives hints of what will be on the exams. Take it with him if you have the opportunity.
Paul is great at explaining concepts in a way that you can relate it back to your own experiences and knowledge and helps make understanding the concepts a lot easier.
Great lecturer and a funny guy. Would recommend!
He is very honestly about what to expect on the exams. He won't play mind tricks on you. He really encourages the class to ask questions. He makes lectures enjoyable to go to at 8:30 in the morning
Firstly, he is HOT. Second, he makes a tough course a lot more enjoyable and less dreadful. He is hilarious, and draws a lot of diagrams which helps you memorize the concepts better. He is very friendly and replies to emails fast. Also, throughout lectures he will say"I can ask you on the exam..." or "students in the past have gotten this wrong"
Best prof! he's really good at teaching and I have no complaints about his class. The midterms were pretty straight forward, easy. The final tho.... Lol yikes I studied lots and that shi was something else man
Awesome professor who made the course fun! Basically all tested material comes from notes and lab manual. Definitely a course to maintain a consistent heavy study schedule as it is a lot of material, and should never be left till the last minute. Exams are for the most part straight forward and easy. Do the work and you will get the grade you want.
Paul is a nice prof overall, he tends to go at a decent tempo up until the evaluation forms. The day after we submitted them, he sped through chapters to the points that he was incomprehensible. He also finishes class 10-15 minutes early for questions, if he explained it slower the first time, there wouldnt be so many questions to begin with.
Best prof I've had by far. Funny, makes lectures interesting, draws diagrams to help with understanding, and is always willing to help students outside of class. The class is difficult and there's LOTS of material to learn, but if you study you'll pass. Highly recommend taking the course with him
Paul was an overall good professor however his notes I found to be a little vague, and he tends to rush when speaking in lectures. Textbook wasn't mandatory but Id recommend to get one because the notes were not very clear.
Paul's a funny guy and his enthusiasm is nice for typical boring lectures, except his notes were extremely vague literally had to decode them to understand! His lectures were always cut short hence why they're all rushed in the end. He speaks really fast, you get lost quite a few times and end up going home to relearn everything alone again.
One of the most enthusiastic profs at U of M. Loves what he does and he is so funny. Easy class as long as you put time into memorizing. For the lab exam, make sure you know all the origins/insertions/actions very well as there are a lot of questions on it.
Had him for anatomy and just had to have him for physiology as well. He's amazing, lectures are engaging and he answers any questions. This class is deemed tough, as it should be, but it's not as bad as people say. Put time into understanding the processes and you'll be better off rather than memorizing.
He is always willing to help, and even on zoom, he makes due with what he has and always has students best interest at heart.
If you're looking for a sign and can't decide on which professor to choose for anatomy and physiology, THIS IS YOUR SIGN. I absolutely enjoyed Paul's class and he's definitely one of the best professors you'll ever meet. He's also hilarious so I always looked forward to every class. Notes were straight up and he only includes what's needed!
Paul is a great professor. Hes very chill and gets along with the students. You dont really need the textbook, unless you want further understandings, there is a free online pdf if you search it up. But he quizzes you based on the notes he gives you. Overall would def take him again (didnt really attend or watch recorded lectures) still did okay.
Paul is a gem. No other words to describe him. Anatomy is a hard course - Paul makes it fun. He recorded half our lectures instead of having them on zoom which I have mixed feelings about. Overall though he was great (and not hard on the eyes).
I took his Anatomy class in 2016 and it was great, very well structured and easy to follow for challenging subject matter. As a mature student I was a little nervous about going back to university but this class and Prof. Messings tiny horse really helped me feel at ease. Great notes also!
Paul is a professor who makes lectures entertaining while remaining informative. He knows his stuff and always answers any questions students may have. All of his assessments are based fully off of the detailed class notes he provides. The textbook is good for assistance but is in no way mandatory. If you are taking anatomy, take it with Paul.
Probably the best prof I've had this semester, he's very clear on what he wants you to know and remember for the test. The lectures were heavy but he makes the effort to make it bearable. Records his lectures so even if you missed a class or 2 it was okay since you could go back to it whenever you had time.
The hardest class Ive ever taken He was really nice and tried really hard to make sure we understood the content Textbook not really needed Only reason I wouldnt have him again is cause I had a different prof for biol 1410 (Milner, I would go with her next time) Would recommend you stay with the same prof for both courses
The content of this class if quite difficult as it is very fast paced. With that being said, Paul is able to explain concepts well and in depth. All assessments were based 100% off of the notes (textbook is only there for assistance). I had him for both 1410 and 1412 which I recommend doing to become familiar with his teaching style.
Paul is a nice guy but an okay prof. He talks fast and doesn't really explain things in too much depth. His lectures are interesting and I appreciate the notes he provides. He can also sometimes be passive aggressive if your question is worded weirdly. He responded to my emails quickly & he cares about what he teaches. Content is soo heavy!
Course is super heavy; content wise but if you read through and not fall behind you are good to go.
Paul made his pre-recorded lectures somewhat enjoyable with his corny jokes. My best advice is to try your best not to fall behind. Anatomy is a HEAVY-detailed course. Make sure to attend Paul's lectures to decode his notes, as well as, for textbook Figure #'s. Study with visuals, it'll help you. Other than that, self-studying is a MUST.
The best part about paul is his tests. The questions are made up directly from the notes, no surprises at all. Any examples used will be the only ones tested. Anatomy is heafy but paul keeps it interesting, and his TA, Taylor, is absolutely AMAZING.
very unprofessional, didn't feel like he took his job seriously
paul is a really nice guy but not a great professor in my opinion. he talks really quickly and has a hard time staying on topic. he also asks students to ask questions alot but doesnt really answer the question when they ask or gives a really convoluted answer. the notes are structured well tho so it is possible
Pauls class was one of the easiest I've ever taken. Testing is all multiple choice questions, focus lots of the examples for each topic. Some of the questions are confusing and badly worded, so it's hard to know what he wants a lot of the time. His lectures are insanely boring and completely pointless. He gives out notes with all the information.
Though Paul is funny, personable, and charismatic, his teaching wasn't very conducive to learning. Slides from lectures weren't provided for students, only a text documents lacking pictures/diagrams. Lectures were often just reading word-for-word, so they weren't really that insightful. Questions were always answered in vague or strange way.
Professor Messing made physiology lectures interesting and interactive. He did his best to simplify and connect all chapters as well as providing different suggestions for studying. Physiology is only marked on a few quizzes and two exams so there is not much room for error. I really recommend attending lectures for explanation and further notes.
Paul is super down to earth and his first priority is the students learning. He would pause the lecture and make to ask students if they have any questions. He could explain the topics well and make a few jokes along with it.
This is one of the easiest but also the most useless class I have taken so far. Paul's funny and has an infectious energy but he could have done a much better job at explaining concepts and delivering lectures (felt like I learnt more from Cole in the pre-lab talks about ecology than in the lectures). Easy class but kinda lame.
paul tends to speak fast, mumble, make a lot of jokes, and get sidetracked, a lot. he asked the class once who had apple watches and why they needed them (spent 10-15 mins). he ends class 15 mins before he should, wasting a lot of time. the quizzes and midterm were long compared to the allotted time, so make sure to study well before.
Paul is easy-going in class. But it is literally not funny to write test for this course. He did make questions directly from notes, however, the note is really heavy. Especially for the end part of this course they will throw like 40-50 papers full of annoying details of body systems. Drop it as early as possible.
Paul is very nice and funny which makes going to lectures a little bit more exciting. However, calls people out a lot in class which makes it kind of awkward and scary. The exam was very hard and focused on tiny details. The midterms aren't bad but make sure to have a very good grade before the final because your mark will for sure drop.
I took Paul's in-person class and I'm so sure his online classes would be ten times better. His pre-recorded videos are easy to refer back to and I'm so sure his notes are the best if you're taking BIOL1410. He's funny (just a tiny bit) and he has a twin brother that brought him coffee during one of our classes.
Paul's class was the easiest bio course I have taken, get ready to learn nothing. He's all over the place during lectures and never knows what lecture he is on. A few guest lectures, because he is lazy. On the Friday before the Monday midterm, we asked what was on it and he said he was too tired and had to take a nap in his office. Interesting guy
His notes are neat and organized but contain lots of abbreviations and symbols. It depends on the personal preference to review with his notes. Good lectures but he is not easy to contact for office hours. It would be easier to contact the lab instructor Kristie Lester if you have any questions and she usually gives you a detailed explanation.
Paul is definitely passionate about ecology, but he spends so much time talking about his research and experiences that we didn't spend much time actually talking about the course material. He had about 1 guest lecture a week and I think I learned more about ecology in the lab. You can do well in the class without really being in class.
Paul is a nice guy, so is the lab coordinator (Elina). Course is heavy. Midterm was easy, but don't expect the final to be the same as the midterm. I felt like Paul tricked us by giving us an easy midterm Qs and then switched gears to SUPER hard final exam. Study hard and wise for the final to get A or A+. Good luck!
Paul is very charismatic hence people generally like him. His lectures are boring, spends too much time talking about Costa Rica. Unable to come to class early to set up early. Has problems with technology. Lab Instructor taught us more about ecology than the professor ever did. Class is not mandatory (Summer 2024), Easy Exam + Lab, Easy A/A+
Paul's class was an easy A, but the lectures were pretty hit-or-miss. While he's charismatic, he often got sidetracked. Unstuck AI was super helpful for preparing for the multiple-choice exams, which could be confusing.
Explains things clearly and makes sure you are prepared for exams. Some say he talks too fast, but it was the perfect speed for me, I did not feel rushed at all.
He talks way too fast, get ready to catch up lol
W prof, extremely easy and enjoyable course. Two midterms and a final (25, 25 and 50%). If you didn't do well in his course, get ready to brew up some copium because you certaintly didn't cook. Guy's wholesome and passionate about ecology. The goat
He is a great professor, and his exams are easy if you study the content. However, he moves quickly, so you need to stay focused. Overall, I enjoyed learning with him!
Paul is a charismatic guy. This makes his lectures quite entertaining. He often fell behind in terms of the syllabus schedule. We would often cover topics in lab's first rather than in lecture. Overall, good lecturer, but you will have to play catch-up near the end of the term.
Paul was always very knowledgeable about all the information for this class and he was able to answer questions in a way that helped you try to figure it out yourself but also lead you down the right path towards the answer. Paul cared very much about making sure you got a good grade while still ensuring the course had enough difficulty
He's a good person but very disorganized this term. Consistently started classes late and ended early. The course itself is really interesting and based entirely on lecture slides (no text.) and guest lectures - but exams can be tricky. Would take him again as he is one of the better profs in the department.
I took both Anatomy and Physiology with Dr. messing and would recommend him. He is high energy and explains concepts in a simple manner. Attendance isn't mandatory to succeed as everything test is provided in PDF notes! He definitely cares for who students and wants everyone to succeed!
Super nice, enthusiastic, and encouraging guy. He does talk fast which personally didn't bother me but he was a little all over the place sometimes, jumping from topic to topic. I found the final exam to be on the harder side, you really had to know the small details and couldn't get away with having a general knowledge of the subject.
He is super fun and cool dude
really good course / easy only IF you know how to study and are a pretty independent learner, you can really tell he loved teaching
nice professor, but it is a difficult and heavy class. textbook is barely needed and is only for labs since pdf notes are provided for lectures. you need a lot of time and patience if you want to succeed in this course. second midterm and lab exam are very close and can be very stressful if you don't study in advance. good luck!
