His tests are very hard. He may have review seccesions a few days before but they don't help. You have to go way beyond class in order to succeed. (Please forgive spelling errors.)

Definately not worth the failing grade. Has review sessions that do not help, grades are too long with too much information needed. The multiple choice is enough to make anyone cry. A lot of work outside of class required to get anything near a decent grade, and that is if your lucky enough to have the memory of an encyclopedia. RUN!
I don't suggest anyone to take this man's class unless it's absolutely your last and only choice to take him. His test are very hard that consists of 20 t/f questions, 20 m.c., and 20 short essay questions. Basically if you decide to take him make sure you're well prepared.
The funny thing with all the reviews for Dr. Nealen is that, I had the class the fall semester of 2005, and never got anything higher than an 80 on a test, got a C in lab, never read the book, and only studied for 30 minutes per exam, and I still got an A in the class. As I do not have a memory of an "encyclopedia" He cant be that hard.
I actually didn't mind Dr.Nealen's class and actually thought he was a fairly decent teacher. He is a very good person when you visit him during office hours and does his best to help you understand the material. His tests are super hard andI don't know what it is going to take to get an A in his class!
I didn't want to hate him, every1 talked trash about him, but I wanted to give him a chance- His tests are WAY hard. I studied every day 40 pages of reading per class. He doesn't give worksheets useless review sessions. He doesn't connect subjects together well. I worked my butt off, he enjoys watching us squirm, wouldn't give grade till final
Very nice professor, willing to help students when needed. Very hard exams however! You must answer the short answer and essay questions in scientific terms, not your own or you'll receive no credit!!! Doesn't curve although 3/4 of the students dropped his class. Spent 3 hrs studying each night a week and a half before each exam and still got a C
VERY difficult class. But you will learn a lot! He's a funny guy in class, and the lecture outlines make it so you don't need to go to class. Hardest class so far in college. Lectures kind of boring.
I was very overwhelmed in the beginning of this class, but I went to every lecture and the study sessions and ended up with a B. Review your notes at least once a week. He is very understanding and helpful.
HORRIBLE, he is so smart and thinks everyone else is on his level. When you go to his office hours he talks to you like everything will be ok then his test come and they are the hardests test i've had ever taken at IUP!! unless your a complete Genius at Bio!! then take him other then that stay FARR away!!
He loves what he teaches, espically neurology. Yes, everyone hated his class b/c it was hard, and yes it was hard. I had no idea what college would be like, and my lack of initial studying gave me a B. Want to get an A? Read the notes and book, and use the correct terminology in short ans q's. I loved the info, he'll help you anytime. Study!
Nice little man- I really respected him although I didn't do very well in the class because I just didn't care. You can't get by without reading the book and going over your notes. His slides are very organized and he's willing to go out of his way to help students who are having trouble. Really friendly and intelligent- knows and loves his field.
Extremely smart, extremely difficuly, extremely helpful. Learn to go to class. It helps to browse the chapter before the class...you WILL get an A if you do these things. it's merely effort.
If you care at all about your GPA, don't take him. My only college B was from him. I'm now a Jr. I studied for hours EVERY night, read all the chapters. Way way hard. I knew the material, but couldn't answer to his liking. Grades very strictly, takes FRACTIONS (3/4) of points off! Please don't take him if you can help it. Office hours DON'T help.
Dont get me wrong, Dr. Nealen is a very nice guy. His class is just so hard to get higher than a D, no matter how hard you study. I mean yea if you have no life and want to sit in your dorm for all of your college semester, then by all means take him! But, if you are worried about your GPA that semester, avoid him!!! I'll be lucky to get a C...
Seriously, do not take this class if he teaches it. I thought I liked Biology, but not now. He made me hate going to class and I am even a Biology major.
Horrible teacher. Makes you feel like you know nothing and his quizzes are ridiculous. Do not take him for Physiology lab!
ugh quizzes were ridiculous as were the tests. unless you memorize the textbook for the test, then you will not do well. each test had 15 short essay questions. said he was willing to help you if you went to office hours but only would tell you to do the online quizes. unless you love failing take him!
This was a horrible class! Imo Dr. Nealen did nothing to help understanding the material. I think he made things more difficult than necessary. I know this is a tough class, however if you end up here, put lots of time and study in yourself!!!!
worst professor i have EVER taken. do not take this man unless you intend on studying biology every waking second of your life. he flies through slides and is VERY hard to understand, quizzes were a joke and he never explained what was on tests, even if i studied the "conceptes"!!! :(
the absolute worst professor ever!! Do not take him unless you plan on studying bio five hours a day
out of my 115 person class, the average on the first two tests was a 45%. nobody got above an 89%. He's a very nice person, but do NOT take this class with him
I'm not gonna lie, when you first start his class, you will hate him. This is a weed out course, so its going to be rough. If you make note cards for all of the vocab used, study charts and pictures in the text, and study with a friend for a few hours for a couple days before the tests, you'll pass.
This professor is very hard and you have to study every seconds to do well in dat class. My advice is to study the handouts... Very well n don't focus much on the text book
What a nightmare. Had him for lecture & lab. Test averages were always 50%... I was in the 70-90th percentile on all tests & still barely got a B. No matter how much I studied his tests were outrageously difficult. Went to office hours, they didn't really help- it'd be nice if he would've tested what he talked about!!
nealen is probably the worst professor, ever. I have never encountered a prof. who cared less about his students. I study four days straight for his exams, I have only passed one. He is too fast and does not make the material understandable. Half of my class withdrawled. I wish I would have been one of them.
He is the hardest professor I've ever had. Biology is my major and I'm a very hard worker. His class was the first C I've ever gotten and I busted my butt for that grade. Be prepared to work hard to pass this clas. He is a horrible professor.
He is the worst professor ever! Avoid him at all cost. He is very boring and monotone and basically just reads the book to you during leccture. His tests are extremely hard you better be prepared to study every day. Im an A student and this was awul.
He is NOT for the faint of heart. If you don't study or care about the course, his tests will kick your ass. However, if you work hard, he is extremely helpful, and overall he's very good at dispensing information. Basically, a good choice if you really want to learn. A bad choice if you think you can just breeze by.
the hardest class at IUP. indepth powerpoints youwould listen to him lecturing and think you understood then took the test and failed miserably. use the book, SI, use online quizzes, and avoid him for lab for any chance of a good lab grade. even with lab manual strict precise grading. didn't even have a C in lab. lab tests were just as hard.
Sit in front of the class because he can be quiet, but if you're paying attention, he explains things in a very clear way and always encourages questions.
He stands in front of class and lectures the whole time. There are three exams and they are pretty much your whole grade, plus a few pop quizzes every now and then.
Basically you show up for lecture and listen to him read 20+ PowerPoint slides to you the entire class. I retained no information from this course. Did not make an effort to engage students in learning, lab grade was an A for different prof. but Nealen lowers lab grade to 150 points instead of 213 pt. so it doesn't help raise your grade as much.
You are tested any where from 8 to 9 chapters. The exam consists of about 60 questions and their is no study guide to help you narrow those chapters down for an exam. Their are also questions that he never covered in lecture. It's so vague and boring.
Nealen is by far the hardest professor I have ever taken. He reads powerpoints and doesn't explain anything well at all. If you email him he won't respond and he gives pop quizzes. All of my friends and I fail the exams.
I had him for Phys Lab and he was awful. I am a 4.00 student and I never once recived a 100% from him unless he graded for participation. He is the only Phys Lab Prof that makes quizzes more points than the lab reports. His quizzes are also very difficult and I don't understand how he grades. Also he is very bad at emailing students back.
I am a great student and I study all the time. He does not care. He stands in front of the class and just reads from power points. Do not take him for lab. Labs are worth 5 points and quizzes are worth 12. I got an 8/12 on a quiz and he wrote "Good work" on the top. The lab final is 1/3 of the grade and is hard. Don/t take him if possible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is hands down the worst professor i have ever had here at IUP. His lectures are just him reading his pp slides for an hour and maybe he will throw in a pop quiz in the last 3 mins.. Expect to teach yourself the material for exams. Questions on stuff not covered in class. Grades unfairly. Terrible, boring, egocentric.
He's a very tough grader and hardly gives extra credit. He's so boring and it's hard to hear him during lectures. I honestly wouldn't recommend him. He's horrible!!
The most boring science teacher in all of IUP. All he does is read off the slides. Lots of people fell asleep during his lecture (or they didn't even show up). Can't even tell you one thing that I learned from his class. Don't take him unless you're into super boring teachers who can't teach.
Would not take this class again and dont recommend it. He only reviews the notes that he already makes available online. He is a good guy and cares about students but if you only need to take a science class for liberal studies
He's extremely cocky and his quizzes are worded very poorly. Lab reports are collected in class and he puts questions on them that are impossible to do without asking him, which usually elicits some sort of condescending explanation. He also almost never gives 100% on lab reports unless he tells you it's collected for participation. Final was ehh.
Dr. Nealen is nice don't get me wrong. Just be prepared to sit through 2-3 lectures a week that drag on and on while he reads power points word for word from the projector screen. He crams a chapter a day into lecture which usually consists of 35 pages worth of slides. If you think thats bad, there are no less than 6 chapters per exam. Good luck!
The class is a lab, so obviously if you don't go you will fail. He doesn't make you buy a pro packet which is sort of nice because it saves money. His lab reports can be pretty wordy but he will normally flat out give you the answer if you have a problem. He is one of those professors that will never give 5/5 unless it's completely perfect. not bad
Dr. Nealan is a nice guy, but is such a boring teacher. He just reads off his slides and then expects you to read 6-7 chapters for 1 exam. His exams are nothing like the notes and the class was just overall boring to be in. He also gives in class quizzes. I would not take him again
He's very concise and easy to understand when he lectures, just listen. It helps to have the notes printed so you can hear & focus on his explanation. Always willing to help you fully understand the concepts and doesn't make you feel dumb about it. Tests aren't bad as long as you understand the processes & dont try to memorize definitions. Love him
Dr. Nealen is a very respected and well known teacher. He is great at explaining concepts and speaking in general. As long as you do the at home quizzes and have an effective way to study/learn youll be fine. Not the easiest course, of course, just gotta get your work done. Occasionally he has online lectures which are an amazing help!
Very sweet guy. However, he only grades on tests. He only gives a test every five to seven chapters. I often find his lectures boring & he moves through the slides very quickly. I had to drop the class, as it was very difficult to pass.
Dr. Nealen is pretty cool, but be prepared in his Physiology lab. You MUST be detailed with answers in your lab report questions. Additionally is a hard grader with his lab quizzes. However, he does explain things very well and give you a easy opportunity to pass the final lab quiz. If you want a challenge, take his course!
I had him for lab. He was pretty chill at first, until i tried to raise my lab grade. Everything is based off group work, which was fine until it came to the last week. I had to miss the last lab, I tried to make it up by taking it on another day and he said no and i even tried to do another prof's lab and he said no. VERY hard on grading.
In class he is very helpful when asking questions throughout your lab. He does give a lot of info that you will have to memorize it all for a quiz at the end of class. Hard grader. Allows note card for final but it isn't very helpful with his type questions. He also isn't very easily accessible outside of class or his office hours.
What he wants on his essay exams is confusing, but if you study the material he goes over, its not too bad. He grades fairly and has given second chances to change exam answers. Its a difficult course, but he tries to make it interesting.
There are quizzes after each class that will impact your grade, but there is no time during the class to study for them, so it is hard to fully understand all the material. The group work is very beneficial and he will help you write some of the answers and then proceeds to grade it all wrong and completely tear apart the answer he helped you with.
There are weekly quizzes at the end of each class based on the information he talks about in that class. You barely have any time to review the information he talked about before having to take the quiz. There are also weekly lab reports and he is a very hard grader. He will give an explanation to write for an answer and then mark it wrong.
There are also weekly lab reports and he is a very hard grader. He will give an explanation to write for an answer and then mark it wrong.
This class was one of the worst I have taken. He is a ridiculously tough grader and is not helpful when you ask questions. He takes forever to answer emails and if your grammar is wrong he wont answer at all (its in his syllabus). Save yourself the frustration and take a different professor
All online. Basically a teach yourself type of class.
He is a well respected teacher, ASK QUESTIONS IF CONFUSED! He loves to help his students and engage. His lab class was group orientated, and tests at the end of every class. Read the prelabs on moodle, write down everything he does on the slides in class. Be precise and logical in your answers and show up. You will do fine!
This class was more difficult than my O Chem class, and that’s saying something. I tried my hardest, but I always felt like the stuff I studied was not on the exam. There was no SI or tutoring available. Truly a class that gave me several panic attacks. Lab was even harder, with quizzes at the end of each lab. Be ready to write and memorize.
He is a rude, selfish and unsympathetic person. Hired only for research value. Egotistical in his emails. Very tough grader. Accused for cheating and now have something on my record.
Extremely tough grader. Had him for lecture and lab. In lab there was weekly quizzes based on the lab; little time to study for them. In lecture the weekly quizzes are very helpful but exams are very tough. Grades depend on exam scores mainly. Does not give extra credit. Avoid him! Tough class! All online and self taught for lecture.
Incredibly tough grader and your grade is mostly based on exams (which are super hard). He rarely responds to emails. Some exam questions have material that are not in the notes, making it impossible to answer in the time limit. All exams are 20 open ended questions with not enough time to finish. Save yourself the struggle and tears.
His lectures were very heavy and boring. He gave quizzes which were kind of hard. The tests were very hard
Dr. Nealen was not a bad professor. His lectures were boring, but the class itself is very easy. I liked him as a professor. He was very nice but again his lectures were going over slides that were like 24 slides long, so it was boring. Do not get the book, use the slides that he gives you and study them (for BIO 104) and you will be fine.
His powerpoints never line up with the quizzes. I used his lecture and the book to do a quiz and received a 3/5. He pretty much wants you to figure it out on your own.
a very heavy amount of information on every exam, with only 45 questions on each. If you study with flashcards, get ready to write. Doesn't let you make any work up, even if you have a perfectly good excuse. He has a very monotoned voice, so lectures are very boring and seem longer than usual. I suggest to steer clear!!
I took the physiology lab online with Dr. Nealen. He posts a slideshow every week with a voice over and LOTS of information. He then has a quiz that is worth 5 points every Friday and they are TOUGH. It isn't problems you can do just by reading the slides, you must have a good understanding and really know the topic. He doesn't seem to care either.
His exams were tough but they were online and you could take them at home. His lectures are long. If you don't have any interest in human biology you probably won't enjoy his lecture. He says you need the book, you don't. All of the info you need is on his lecture slides that he posts and he records his lectures. He gives small assignments
I took his online lab for Bio 240 and it was nothing short of TERRIBLE I also had him for lecture and that too was TERRIBLE. For the lab he posts slides every week with a voice over but when it's time for the quiz nothing on the slides help. The slides are full of unhelpful information. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES. He makes it harder than what it is.
he does random quizzes which count as attendance. his exams are online but there hard enough. you have to read more information than his lectures because he doesn't go over everything. he explains things well but i dont find him being a good lecture teacher.
Class was boring and I never felt like I learned much. He doesn't do much to help prepare you for exams. Exams are based off slide material, but a lot of questions are about small details in the chapters rather than the bigger concepts we learned. I found studying practically pointless. Pop quizzes are given often, and the textbook is useless.
I took this professor lab online. There was a quiz every week and a final at the end. He would post slides for the quizzes the week of, when the time came to take the quiz the questions were different than what was on the slides.
Cons: 1:15 class took forever; hard to keep up with notes in lecture because of number of details, unscheduled end-of-class quizzes on new material. Pros: Very organised, follows the book closely, explains material well. Posts his powerpoints, gave extra quizzes to drop lower grades. Multi-choice exams. Take notes and read the book, should get a B.
Lab rating: Very difficult grader, but will give you strong hints (on group lab exercise) if you show you're working for the answers. May still decide answer was insufficient. Drops lowest grade. Admits that he grades harder than other labs.
No re takes so don't miss an assignment you won't be able to make it up.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He acts like everyone is a bio major. You are expected to know 150+ slides worth of information for a 40 question exam. This class is way to hard for a 100 level course. If you are reading this, you should have already started studying for his exams! Pop quiz almost every lecture. Save yourself the headache and steer clear!!
Dr. Nealen's lab for BIO 104 is all guided through D2L. The class is relatively easy, although it doesn't seem like all quiz questions are based on the slides. He is pretty easy to reach outside of class, but make sure you stay on top of deadlines.
Easiest lab I've ever taken. Dr. Nealen makes this online lab fun and engaging without having to dedicate too much time to it. He had an assignment and quiz due every Friday that was super easy to manage with a busy schedule. Def take his lab if you need a booster for a difficult lecture.
Gives test every single week that is nothing like the powerpoint. It would take me an hour to finish his 18 question quizzes, even when I used HIS notes for it. I had to email him twice in the span of two weeks to just get a response from him and his response was not helpful. Offers 3 extra credit for only 2 points each. No quiz thanksgiving week.
his lectures were a bit boring but this class is very easy especially for a science class. definitely try to get online lab with him, it takes less time and was also not hard. the tests were a bit hard but i never got below a high c. attendance isn't mandatory but you still need to come to class since he gives open ended questions for points.
I had him for physiology lab and he was not good. I would recommend taking ANY other lab professor for this class because his grading system was completely unfair. Even if you ask for help, and he tells you your answer is correct, he still may mark it wrong.
This professor was extremely difficult and often unfair in grading. Several times I was told my answers were correct, yet were still marked wrong. There was a quiz after every lecture and were not multiple choice, only written responses. I felt that I had to put in a lot more effort and time in this lab compared to my other classes.
