You're nuts to rate Newman poorly. He's probably the best damn professor @ UPJ!

Def knows his stuff
Very very intelligent. Classes are difficult, but he definitely knows his stuff.

Had him for Summer Scholars over two summers while I was in high school. One of the best profs I've ever had. Great sense of humor and engaging lectures -- he knows his stuff and has a great time teaching it. Expects much, and rightly so.
A great professor. A man who cares very much about his students and that is why he demands so much out of them. He has a great sense of humor and really knows his stuff. Highly recommended
Great professor. Enjoyable class, just you gotta stay right on top of the readings and participate in class. The class really stretches your thinking and you learn alot

Very interesting and definitely knows his stuff. He makes you work hard, but if you try your best, he sees it, and it's all worth it. You'll learn a lot.
Newman is great! He's a funny, nice and very smart! He knows his stuff and expects his students to know their stuff! DO THE READINGS and you'll be fine!
Great class. Very passionate about his work. Loves the material and the students. Take him if you can.
If you like a left wing liberal who is full of themselves and thinks Micheal Moore actually reports the truth then this is the class for all you liberals out there.
I really enjoyed the class. Make sure you read, and participate in class. This was one of the hardest classes I had, but I loved every minute of it. He's a great teacher.
horrible class
Very lively professor, animated and passionate about History. He is very down to earth and helpful when you ask for it. Excelent class for the liberal view of history.
This guy is awesome. He stands up on desks, shouts loud as hell, and uses good picture slides with his lectures.Dont mind the liberal comment below.I never saw he had an agenda and Im no liberal. All around awesome professor! I still tell ppl about him
Newman is totally awesome! He makes sure you know what you are learning and he doesn't ever judge you by what you believe! I absolutely LOVE him! He is a nut! He does so many crazy things to MAKE sure you learn!
newman's so hot it's unbelievable!! take the class just to look at him...i'm serious!!!
wow i never thought history would be this interesting.
to put it simply: newman kicks ass and i recommend him to anyone! in fact, he should teach every class at UPJ! lol
Paul Newman is god's gift to history at UPJ. He is gorgeous with luscious lips, a Brad Pitt- chiseled chin and hot ass calves. He makes me want to melt and drool every class. Takes his classes just to stare at him. One hot historian...grrrowwwllll!

Newman is an awesome teacher and everyone should get to experience his class at least once while here @ UPJ! I am not a fan of history but he makes everything more exciting! He has the best stories too!Ohhh & like everyone else said he is very hot..single
He is a very rude man and was not a good professor.
Tests can be a little tricky. Alot of notes, but still enjoyed the class. Too hard to stay awake in comfy blackington chairs at 8 am.
one of if not the best professor here that isnt in my major, on the first day of class he did the entire monty python bring out your dead scene. he does give a lot of notes, but he tells you what you need to know for the exams.
Newman used to be great prof. He has totally changed though. He is really rude to his students and acts very unprofessionally. Myself and my class didn't appreciate being sworn at or belittled, as a class or individually, during each class meeting. He rarely showed up during his posted office hours.
lot of lecturing, no time to read things 2x. very difficult final and midterm. had to bust my tail just to get a C...he's a reasonable...very tough to understand everything he wants u to understand. a very sarcastic guy...kinda funny at times
Dr. Newman is by far the best teacher I had at UPJ. He is tough but fair and cares about his students. He is also interesting and funny. I loved going to breakfast for class!
great teacher. reminds you to not just accept all supposed "historical truths," but to always question and dig deeper.
Fun class, the guy is hilarious and interesting. Exams tough but passable.
THE BEST!!! Didn't lul me to sleep like Matson. Too Much reading. Newman rules cause he doesn't bow down to the higher ups of the university. Newman for Pres '08
Newman knows his stuff, he's very passionate about his job, he doesn't take any**** but I would honestly rather stab my eyes out than take him again after the kind of semester my class had with him. I think he finally lost his mind.
Great class Great teacher hope to take him again
The class wasn't easy. It was a lot of reading and some tough subject matter. But Newman was always willing to explain things for you and help was always there if you needed it. The class was hilarious and I enjoyed actually having debates in class.
One of the best professors a student could ask for.
His book by Zinn, ridiculous. If you're in to feeling horrible about yourself and the human race in general, take him. I'm just saying, yeah we did some bad things but come on. Total pessimist! Take Matson if you can!
He is a great professor where I learned a lot. Always I looked forward to class
Newman was a very entergetic and knowledgeable proffresor. I always looked forward to class because it was never boring. I recommend this proffesor to anyone who likes to go to class. If you don't attend classes offten do not take Newman your grade will suck, because it is a part of the grade.
this guy is a flat out jerk... i took him 2 years ago and just saw his name on this site. he seems like a pretty damn miserable man if u ask me... he's full of jokes, but most of them are offensive... and he def has the worst mouth ive ever seen on a professor... way to look intelligent buddy.
GRRR........if u are not a liberal..or commie...his class is very offensive....horrible language...oh yeah.....i'm newman...i swear so i am cool......get a life!
I like him. He is passionate about his subject-- yeah, he swears a little but it's nothing compared to some people. He's nice and helpful and understands when something goes wrong. His class is interesting because he makes it that way.
My favorite class so far.. He was very passionate and made the class fun.. tests were easy

The class was very boring and long to sit through. Luckily, he only gave a midterm and final, which were both essay. The final was a take-home essay that was suppose to be about 15 pages. I didn't like this class at all.
I do not agree with newman on a lot of issues, however this class is worth taking. Newman knows how to keep your interest!! If you like history, the is the guy to take at UPJ!..
Very good professor who knows his stuff. Kind of nerdy most of the time but a funny guy all the same. Only bad part was that there was a lot of material covered on the tests, I just studied the night before and got a C in the class. Study and you'll get a good grade for sure.
This guy is possibly one of the funniest profs on campus. He's incredibly liberal though so his comments may be offensive to some people. The class wasn't too difficult, show up to lecture and look the book over and you'll be fine. Easy to talk to outside of class as well.
Paul Newman is probably one of the funniest profs I've ever had. I am not a history buff but learning about all the conspiracies of our country was really interesting. It is a lecture based class so take great notes and I recommend going to the History Supplimental Instruction (S.I.) once a week. It helped alot on the tests, the only mean of grades
Dr. Newman was a terrible teacher. He seems nice, but if you need help, he makes you feel stupid. I definitely do NOT recommend him for ANY class.
Great Teacher!!! Can be very funny or very serious at the same time. He takes history into a whole new perspective from what normal history professors would leave out. Highly Recommended!!! Take Crazy Notes!!!
Funniest professor I have had in college. Does cuss a lot so if that offends you I wouldn't recommend him. His class is all lecture and you have to take your own notes. I studied hard the day before exams and didn't find them too hard. Attendance wasnt mandatory. He honestly was hilarious and with a little bit of studying you will do perfectly fine
AMAZING COURSE ! He's is probably one of the best teachers in UPJ. His class is slightly difficult but he makes it so interesting that you don't even notice. Do the outside readings though their always on the exams and help you understand the lectures better. Highly recommended!
Highly recommend. This and 620 with Newman are THE BEST CLASSES AT UPJ! Go to every class. I swear this class will change your whole perception of all the garbage we are fed from kindergarden to high school graduation.
He is a very good professor. Had him first semester freshman year for history. I'm a history ed major and i found his class pretty difficult, but i did end up getting an A. He gives alot of chances for bonus which definately helps. Take a ton of notes and pay attention cause you never know whats on the test. But you will learn a ton of info
Take his class, it will change your life.
Funny and entraining! You'll never think the same about history again. He basically proves that everything you learned about history from elementary to high school was a lie. He definitely knows what he is talking about! The tests can be tricky; only because there's a small amount of questions, where each question is worth a lot of points.
Knows his stuff!! 500 points total in class. 4 exams. YOU BETTER STUDY!! Read all the materials assigned!
Dr. Newman really knows his stuff! Highly recommended class for hist/polisci major. But the one book he requires you to buy (about the history of PA) is one he wrote and is hardly used but the other book is helpful.
he is awesome, the class was easy if you studied and showed up. he is a mice guy. TAKE HIS CLASS it is awesome. got a 100% with great ease. -history major. PS READ THE ZINN BOOK IT IS AWESOME, no complaints about this class at all! lifechanging and great guy. any one who goes to UPJ should take his class!
Overall he is a great professor, who definitely knows his history. He makes classes very interesting. The only points are exams, which can be tricky. However if you pay attention in class and read the textbook you will have no problem at all. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
If you read the material and attend class it's hard to get a bad grade. Trying to meet with him out of class is difficult as he is pretty rude and disregards his students.
If you don't go to class you wont do well. He often gives extra credit for those that attend class. Most of his notes are verbal so if you don't go you wont pass a tests. The tests aren't that hard but you have to study and MUST READ. Very good teacher though, loved the information he taught and the way he taught it.
This class is indeed challenging, but Dr. Newman tries his hardest to help you out. He is a very nice guy as long as you are nice to him. i recommend the class, as long as you are ready to work pretty darn hard for a passing grade!
Very easy to figure out what he is going to put on an exam. He has a rather strong bias on topics but overall is easy to understand and pass the class.
Energetic and intelligent.
Hardest history professor on campus. If you get him, DROP IT IMMEDIATELY
His lectures are not boring at all. The exams go up in points. The first exam is 25 points and the fifth exam is 150 points. Discussion is a MUST!! Don't wait until the last month to start answering questions. Answered 8 discussion questions and received a 3750, but his scale changes every semester. The class size is large, roughly 100 students.
he is a very good professor, I suggest taking him if you can. although, the course is difficult, he offers SI which helped my grade, and after each exam he lets people go to his office to review how they did and what to improve on.
He's an excellent professor, who really has passion for his subject. He teaches the things you didn't learn about American History in high school. Be prepared to study your ass off for tests, but he's always willing to help you figure out how you did and how to do better. I just wish he taught more classes.
I enjoyed Dr. Newman's United States to 1877 class so much that I almost changed my major. He is engaging and animated. If you show up to class for lecture, you'll have an easy time with the class. Participation is graded, so it's a good idea to read the few things that he requires. He cares about teaching and it shows.
Dr. Newman made the topics interesting and his method of teaching made the material easier to learn. Also the dude is hillarious
Probably the best Professor at UPJ. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want to pass the class, you should definitely show up. His courses are heavy in lecture, but he's such an amazing storyteller, and he knows what he's talking about, which makes the material much easier to remember. He also gives extra credit. Plus, he's quite funny.
Dr. Newman made the civil war come to life. His passion for history spilled out into his lectures and I gained more knowledge of American history in this one semester history class than I had during my entire high school career. He demands effort and deep thought but is willing to help you every step of the way. Wonderful professor!
Very pssionate about history and civil rights. His lectures were like stories. He was very funny and showed us the reality of history. He was always very helpful. The class wasnt that hard. If you show up to class, take notes, and participate, you will have a good grade. No presentations or papers, just small assignments after every class.
There's some reading for homework, but it's not too bad.
Dr. Newman was very good to me. History is not my strongest subject. He was very good at answering emails quickly & helped you as much as he could. I 100% recommend going to the SIs that go with the class. I wouldnt pass the exams if it werent for those. Also, theres a good bit of homework that consists of reading from the book & quizzes for it.
His style of teaching is really conducive to a positive learning environment. he makes class interesting and enjoyable. The textbook is actually interesting and there is not too much work. He also is really easy to talk to so if you have concerns, just ask.
He is a wonderful, funny professor/advisor and is always there to help you. He has powerpoints with his audio, great lecture outlines to take notes to, and records lectures so you can always go back and watch them. Make sure to watch the powerpoints+lectures to take good notes. You really learn with his style of teaching. He is clear and organized
He is one of the most engaging professors on this campus. He truly cares about every student. He is a sweetheart.BUT don't take this class expecting it to be an easy required class. If you are willing to read lots, study, go to SI, etc, you are golden. If you expect to put minimal effort in and be done quickly...um.Its the college version of AP Gov.
I had accommodations from the university to miss class and he told me he did not care. He had me take my exam at the airport. Other than that experience, he was a good prof. Do the homework. GO TO SI. If you can't attend SI, ask for the materials. Trust. This class is not an easy A, but I learned a lot
Currently, the class is online. Even though the course was on zoom, Dr.Newman is a great storyteller and explains history well- so pay attention and take good notes. Every three modules is a test, w/ extra credit. Outside of class, there are readings + mini quizzes and recorded lectures. Follow the lecture outlines; it's what you need on the test.
I don't know where these teachers come from that think the class is about them, but Newman is definitely one of them. If I had a quarter for every time he mentioned himself or what he believes about topics that have nothing to do with class, I would have my student loans paid in full. Class was easy but an insane waste of time. Do better
You do a majority of your learning outside of class. He teaches the bare minimum. Extremely boring lectures as well
I liked Newman's class because its possible to get an A, which compared to other WOK classes is the most important thing to me. He has about 30 mins a week of powerpoints you have to listen to but otherwise its not a bad class. I learned more about history in his class than I have my entire time in ele/middle/high school combined.
Questions on the quizzes and tests are purposely ambiguous, meaning that if you know the answer to the question it will still be a 50/50 on if it is "actually" correct. Gives way too many resources with half them being irrelevant because he personally disagrees with them. This class makes you depend on the teacher rather than yourself.
Dr. Newman gives you plenty of resources to do well. It's also important to attend lectures if you want to do well, he does post the PowerPoints but they're meaningless without context. As long as you care and attend class, you will do well. However, a lot of the exam questions are unnecessarily confusing and tricky. Online textbook given for free.
He was very great at keeping you engaged in the lecture. He is definitely a personality and will share his personal life in class. He is also nice. Only complaint is that there is a LOT of homework, you have to read a lot and take quizzes outside of class frequently. Also a lot of teaching yourself.
Professor Newman makes the course engaging and enjoyable, even for non-history buffs. Attend lectures, do the readings, and utilize resources like unstuck ai to excel. The exams can be tricky, but the free textbook and supportive professor make this a manageable class.
Dr. Newman does not keep you engaged while in his class. The whole time you just look at slides and try to understand what he is talking about. His lectures are very heavy on material and his exams can be tricky. He expects you to read a book or two and take daily quizes on the the days you have class. Do not reccommend.
