From other ratings, I believe that he must teach 68 very easily but 1C harder. I had him for 68 & he was funny, entertaining, got his lectures done & let u out early 1 hr most the time. His class wasn't hard to me, & he gave an extra credit assign. He lays out the way he would want ur essays to be.

Very funny and incredible professor. Easy reading and most of the essays are opinionated. He just wants backup for your opinion essays and he'll give you a good grade. Juss do the assignments and you'll pass for sure.

Professor O'Brien is a very well educated and competent teacher. He will go out of his way to help you if needed and he always arranges a full class period devoted to peer editing each other's papers before we turn them in. He mixes english with philosophy which makes the class very unique.

I tutored for Paul a few years back. It was a great experience. Sitting in on his lectures, I could see the guy was a fantastic teacher -- one of the best in the dept. Even if for some reason you don't come away a better writer, you'll at least come away a better person.

He is kinda funny in a weird way. He likes to give examples for everything. There are lots of reading; they are hard to understand, but he tries his best to explain them. Class is going to be a little boring at times, but hes better than some teachers out there

Professor O'brien is the best. His class is always worth looking forward to. It's no stress. Just do the reading he requires and then it's smooth sailing from there. You read three easy books and write 3 essays, 3 reading tests and 1 short research paper for the final. Thats so easy. Get extra credit and get to go on a scavenger hunt. really cool!!

He is GREAT for ENGL68. He's really straightforward about what he wants, both for tests and essays. Make sure you read and do your rough drafts/essays and you'll get an easy A. There's only 3 books, 3 essays, a final, and a research paper. Don't miss any assignments or you'll go down a letter grade. He's easy for 68 (but I've heard harder for 1C).

Take his class...the best ever...all u do is read and answer the questions...so much better! planning on taking him for 1C also...trust me...the best english teacher of your life!

I took 3 hours class this semester and he always lets us leave earlier cuz every phrase from him is a gem, he'd never waste our time talking something boring or useless. everything is useful and funny in his lecture, and he'll tell u what he wants clearly. just do what he asks u to and u'll be just fine.

I am a ditcher but I went to all of Paul's clases. He cuts out all the ****, demands good worr, & incorporates philosophy, psychology, history, and feminism into his class so that it is not just english. I actually looked foward to using my text book and LOVED going to class. I totally recommend this for anyone looking for a challenge.

Awesome. Fair, funny, knows the subject well. Don't be put off by his spiel about being super-critical of essays - he is not especially hard. Do the reading, listen to his lectures, be honest and creative in the essays and you should ace everything. If you have problems, he's always available by email or in his office. Recommended.

Probably the best teacher I've ever had. He'll make you think about things you never thought about, and be able to see things in other perspectives. The coolest thing is he's not a "you're wrong/you're right" type of teacher, if you can argue with good support you'll humor him. He enjoys reading what you write, and you'll enjoy hearing his feedback

O'Brien is a triple threat! Funny, smart, and sexy! He's Socratic-minded, down to earth and cuts through the B.S. Go to class daily & understand his lectures - it always relates to his essay topics. His essays are all about your opinions and he grades on how well you support them.

Awesome teaching style and course material. Unlike other eng. teachers who make you read crappy old stories, in his class you get to critique philospohy, evolutionary science, and modern psychology about materialism and death. Everyone reccomends his class because by the time it's over, they've grown as a person. 6/5 for quality if I could give it.

Has an easy enough teaching method. I wouldn't say it was too hard, but it's 1A, so what else would you expect? He's kinda funny, too. My only real problem was that by the semester's end I had an "A," and when I was unable to go take the final for personal reasons, my grade went down to an "F." But that was my only faux pas! :(

At the risk of sounding contrived, O'Brien is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He's incredibly intelligent and is able to keep his class interested - you will actually look forward to class. I transferred to UC Berkeley and teachers just don't compare - they're all elitism and convolutedness without substance, whereas O'Brien is genuine.

This guy was the reason I signed up here just to give him full grades. He's the best teacher i've ever had, not just in college but in all of my learning experiences. He shows how he cares for every individual, and he makes his logic understandable through fun and exciting analogies. Even if you don't need eng, take it just to better yourself.

The BEST professor at SAC!! Me and a classmate were just saying how we wished he taught every GE class, we'd take him for everything. U can talk to him about everything and he gives good advice. His class was a great mind opener. The books he chooses require deep thought and you feel like a better college student for reading them. I'm just sad I wasn't able to take this professor for English 1A. His range is from English 67 all the way to English 1C. I took him for 1C and he dazzled everyone. He is easy to work with and knows his material. Just show up to class and put some time on those essays, which he normally gives you ample time, and you WILL get an A.

Best teacher i ever had. Very easy going, makes the class enjoyable. I got him again for ENGL1A. I was going to transfer to another JC closer to home but decided to come back just take his class.

Good sense of humor! Paul really makes this class enjoyable and I'll be sure to take him for the next sections. He really teaches you the key elements to writing a great paper and he isn't anal about the small stuff. You can always contact him if you need help.

He was a good professor but could be very boring at times. Sometimes his lectures were very off topic and it seemed more like a philosophy class then an english class. Nice guy, but I don't necessarily recommend him. Make sure you do the reading quizzes and speak up in class.

OMG I love this professor! Eng68 was my first english class in college and he just made it worthwhile coming to class. Really funny and entertaining. Approachable and pretty easy, tells you what you need to fix on your papers. Lets class out extremely early, no final, just turn in research paper in the end! his class fills up fast tho!

Paul is great! I took his online class in the Fall of '09. A total of 3 essays and 10 posts assigned. No text required, he posted all reading material on blackboard. Great professor, I took his online class. It was phenomenal! Lots of reading,but very thought provoking and very interesting. Required 3 essays of about 5-7 pages. Great guy! He's critical and extremely thorough when it comes to grading, but he pushes you to really analyze the novels. I never thought I could be critical when writing an essay about the vampire novels: Interview With A Vampire, Twilight, and Dracula. Take O'Brien if you want to be prepared for 1A and 1C.

He is really cool and laid back. He doesn't grade your paper like the grammar police as long as you have some kind of structure and "meat" to your paper you'll do fine. He's great at helping you if you get stuck and in revising your papers too. Very helpful and cool teacher all around. BTW you do have to read a lot in his class.

This was my favorite class last semester. The material was really fun. Our final essay was on the MOVIE Fight Club. The essays are really important but he encourages you to email him rough drafts so its easy. He is really good about helping when you are confused and is not overly strict. No book, readings are packets/PDfs. Take this class!

I took his hybrid class last spring(2013). I loved his class. I still have his pdf lectures because they are very useful for like life in general. I highly recommend him.

Just finished taking his hybrid class for intersession. He is a great professor! Class consists of 3 big essays and discussion posts. The essays are the majority of your grade (lots of points), but they're interesting topics. He makes the class interesting so you won't be bored. Very nice and helpful. I took him this winter as a hybrid class but it wasn't bad. The main thing you need to do is do the DB's on moodlerooms. I missed 3 but still got a B. He gives clear feedback and his format is easier than other professors I've taken. Also the topics we got to choose were great. He's also so funny! I don't regret taking him & would recommend him :)

O'Brien, is absolutely amazing. The way he instructs his class is inspiring and the vibe he brings changes your whole perspective on English. He teaches you how to think beyond yourself and challenge not only others opinions but yours as well. Oh, and he curses a lot but its cool because that's who he is, he likes to curse.

O'Brien is different from the traditional English teachers, which is why he has become my favorite Eng teacher. He gives students a lot of freedom on what and how they want to write, so it is easier for me bec I don't need to worry about following the professor's "formula for a good paper". Since english classes are my hardest subject to endure, I did every other class and left this last. I heard a lot of good comments from friends who have taken him and I am glad that I have chose him. He is super super super nice. This class is the easiest English class i ever took. Only 3 essays total including final, this allows me to take 18 units this semester without struggling. Love hime so much. Easy grader.

I just finished Obrien's spring class. Interesting class for sure, enjoyed it a lot. Dont know where the "easy" comments are coming from. You're reading pretty much every week, and yes, three essays but each is epic. My 2nd paper was over 20 pages!

Do yourself a favor and take professor O'Brien! He helps you EVERY step of the way for all three essays! His online and class lectures are always funny and entertaining. Paul O'Brien is hands down the most inspiring professor here at Mt. Sac. His lectures and his words are amazing and they will forever stay with me. I highly suggest taking him for English 1C because you will learn much more than just writing essays, trust me.

Fantastic professor, I took him for a 'hybrid' online class during winter inter-session. He explains material very clearly and gives great topics to write about. good prof, very nice. if you want to have good grade, you have to work hard. he does not care much about grammar. there has 3 big papers and 2 mini papers and a quiz. big papers are not easy.

I took him for Eng 1C for a hybrid class and he is a phenomenal professor. He has a great sense of humor and is very inspiring with his lectures. Doesn't care much for essay structure or formating, what he grades on is content which makes essays great! He is really thought provoking, his lectures make you discuss controversial topics that engage everyone in class. He "Keeps it real" curses in class with a "Family Guy-like" humour, yet his UCLA degree is never questioned. Amazing.

3 essays, I only did 12ish pages each. I didnt even read half of the reading assignments though there is very little reading compared to other classes. Still got high A. Please take him for ur own sake.

Thought provoking and inspirational. It's quite obvious how much he cares about his students. His lectures are awesome, they make you contemplate the main ideas for days after. His papers, while challenging, are nothing to stress over because he prepares you for them. He cares more about what YOU think and how you express those ideas.

There are 4 papers. 2 book quizzes. He grades on content rather than formality. the topics are relatable and interesting allowing a student to truly think. No actual text book to purchase instead it might be two manageable books costing no more than $15 each. Flexible on attendance which is great and is overall a very animated and involved! Easy A

Amazing professor. There are 4 essays and 2 quizzes as well as a few online discussions (hybrid course). Only 2 books used in the semester. Each semester he chooses a new topic to focus on and ours was memory. YOU CAN PASS HIS CLASS IF YOU PUT IN THE EFFORT FOR THE GRADE. My first essay grade was a D but, I worked for my end grade, it's possible!

Best professor I have had! He makes the lectures very enjoyable and is very funny. I wish I could take him for another class! His essays are fairly graded, as long as you do a rough draft, you will get great feedback to polish your final draft.

O'Brien is definitely an hilarious dad-figure, who will make time for his students the best he can. Don't take advantage of the overviews for the Essays(4), because he really will help if you just ask! Jokes all the time, but is very serious about the topic choices that are given. Don't feel intimidated, he is kind and very helpful.

There are 4 essays throughout the semester and two of them are based on a movie we watched and the other two are based on books we read. No textbooks, we have to buy the books on our own and are not sold in the bookstore. Pretty easy grader, leaves hidden extra credit, two reading quizzes, and a class group project. Hes also super funny.

His lectures were amazing & he really helped me advance myself as a writer. O'brien really cares about his students and will go out of his way to help you, even if the material you're asking for help on doesn't involve his class. Be ready to read and listen to instruction. The other great thing is he doesn't make you buy an expensive textbook.

Took this class during the summer and overall the class is easy. 3 papers, 6 online posts, 3 tests. Papers are simple to do, he cares more about content for his papers, and the topics are about things that catches your interest. Easy and simple 6 weeks, no presentations, no pop quizzes, no bs. Last day, did test for 10minutes, turned in last paper

I took his hybrid course for Fall 2018. He is an amazing professor; really smart, funny, and brilliant. If you are sensitive to certain topics, and don't like foul language... probably not the guy for you. He is hands down one of the best English professor's I've ever had in my life. I loved this class, and enjoyed the reading he assigned.

I took this class in the fall and although I did not enjoy some of the materials that we read, he made the class fun and interesting. His way of grading is more about how deep and welldone your concept and analysis of the piece is. He is very funny and approachable and genuinely cares about what his students.

Prof O'Brein was a tough grader and makes you work for it! I would recommend his class but be ready to work. The theme of the course was on comics which was a bit more difficult for me but he changes up themes each semester. He grades for CLARITY and a ton of DETAIL. If you struggle go to office hours or stay after class to talk with him!

He has a great personality. He doesn't accept any late work or believe in extra credit. You'll have to earn your grade the old fashioned way by doing the work. Grade is mostly based on 4 essays. I'm an awful writer & this class was challenging for me. Basically, you have to use your brain to come up with deeper insights about literature. KindaHard!

Awesome professor!! The professor essay's were based on your opinion. He didn't care about grammar as much. Just make sense on what your talking about. Like, what everyone says, " Do the work and you'll pass". When I was taking his class, the theme was comic books which was cool and interesting. For winter 2019, the theme might be based on death.

Awesome Professor. Funny guy. Not strict at all. He guides you thoroughly on how to write great essays. His lectures aren't boring at all and makes you want to listen. There is a lot of reading to do though. We had to do 4 essays in total for summer semester. Our theme was philosophy..I highly recommend taking his class during intermission.

Cool guy. Funny and knowledgeable. Class is pretty straightforward but not an easy A. Not a hard A though. He's very reasonable and didnt overwork us imo.

This is a tough course, but he does as much as he can to make sure you get all the help you need. Very engaging lectures, and the topics are relevant and interesting. I took his hybrid course for the fall/winter term and the topics were online reviews, trolling, memes, and truth.

Best professor by far! Aside from making us laugh out loud various times during each lecture, he helps you become a better writer! Very accessible, knowledgable, and caring. You have to work for your grade, every essay/assignment he provides constructive feedback. Interesting topics and lectures. Can't recommend him enough! Enjoyed the class

I'm currently taking this class and it's the best one I've ever taken! The theme this semester is graphic fiction, basically comic books! We read about Batman and The Joker and then we get to write essays analyzing them which is super cool. Due to the virus, we are now fully online but still, it's a great class.

Paul is AWESOME! he truly shows his care towards his pupils. His assignments are all based on comic books and so his lectures are really interesting. Do yourself a favor and take his class. His teaching not only makes ENGL 1C interesting but easy as well considering its a heavy class to begin with.

Professor OBrien is a wonderful instructor who is very witty and cares for the students as much as the material. I loathed taking this class but he made this an unforgettable semester. Its not an easy A but its not hard to achieve either and thats coming from a person who always looks for an easy way out. Would 100% recommend taking him

took his class fall of 2019 and loved every single moment. he makes lectures super interesting and he gives constructive feedback on your essays. i reached out to him a year later to ask for help with my uc essays and he helped me out for months. you can tell he really cares about his students. its teachers like him that really make a difference:,)

Only one or two homework per week. His class is super easy to get an A. Take him you wont regret it!

Super easy class and you can rewrite every essay to get an A.

He's super caring and patient, and gives specific feedback to help his students improve, but sometimes can be asking too many details. A lot of lectures, and requires hard work, but you'll definitely learn a lot in the end. He's tough on grading, but you can always revise before due dates. I don't regret taking him, but probably won't take again.

I'm not gonna lie this class was challening but interesting the assigments and essays he would assign were good. If you follow instructions and give him your essay for feedback and do what he says you will pass.

He really cares about students and offer a lot of help on viewing your rough draft. Few readings, rational assignment arrangement.

Whether he is a good professor or not depends on who you are. You're sure to learn lots of writing skills if you are hardworking. If you are a casual guy, you may not be suitable for his class. I think his strong personality is suited for teaching critical thinking writing class. You have an opportunity to resubmit each main essay for better grade

Professor O'Brien is one of the best professors I've had at Mt.SAC. He is very funny and makes class-time enjoyable; he also gives a very clear and specific grading criteria for essays so that students are able to get the best grade they can. He is easily accessible if you have any questions, and genuinely wants his students to succeed. Take him!

Really nice prof.

By far one of the most amazing professors I've had. While I am an English major and might be a little biased, I would say that it seems his class is very doable even for someone who is not an English major. The readings are relatively short, and the essays were genuinely interesting and thought-provoking. He is fair and gives great feedback.

He is really a great professor with a humorous teaching style, all in all I would rate him a 5 because there are only 5 to rate!

I really enjoyed taking Prof. O'Brien's class! He was always animated & the lectures were always thought-provoking. Also, there's only 3 essays, no final & an awesome revision policy! If you want full credit make sure not to miss class as there are some in-class group assignments. If you actually want to enjoy English class take Professor O'briens!

Professor O'Brien's lectures weren't at all boring, although there was a lot of reading, it was quite intriguing and rather humorous at times. His assignments allowed for creative freedom, and the guidelines are very clear and thorough. He also gives helpful & direct feedback! His class shouldn't be difficult as long as you pay attention, enjoy it!

Professor O'Brein has great interactive lectures. He is great with feedback after assignments and with communicating. Writing felt like such a breeze because of the ability to be creative and his openness on allowing corrections to be made for a better grade. I learned so much to apply to my other English classes.

WOW JUST WOW. O'Brien wont make u fall asleep, his class is more like talking to a hilarious mentor. He prepares u for the long essays you'll write in the future, and yes, every English1C class has LONG essays so just do the work. He has super interesting topics for the essays like comic books, movies, etc. His prompts are thought-provoking too :-)

Great experience! He's very nice & funny. Work load isn't much at all. 3 essays total. You can also revise the essays as many times as you want till the next essay is due for the highest grade possible.

3 simple projects, 3 essays that can be revised, and a few discussions. Super manageable, and not too much work. Essays took a long time but I crammed them last minute. No tests or other homework, just make sure to manage your time well and put effort into writing and understanding his directions. Follow directions exactly = guaranteed 100%
