creates a relaxed atmosphere and guides you through the work with nothing but helpful positive comments.
Overall a great teacher, very clear and inspiring. Hard marker, but if you try in class you will get a good mark. Very organized and knowlegable.
He is polite and knowledgable outside but very arrogant inside. He is such a hard marker that he will never be tolerant to one little grammar mistakes in your in-class essays. He may be a knowledgable man, but not a helpful and understanding prof.
He is one of the best English professor, and very helpful. He is polite and kind outside and inside. He makes up time for you outside his office hours. He is very fair, and knowledgeable, and goes out of his way to help the students. If you want to learn english, then he should be your first choice.

If you want to drop down your GPA, just take the course with him. Three writings in the final.

I cant help but think that some of the ratings are done by himself. I feel that he's NOT at all helpful and has a condescending attitude. He tries to be funny and interesting but it all comes out like a big act. He is hard to get a hold of outside of class and is vague with his answers. So NOT Hot!
He seems very positive. All his assignments are based on current american issues. He gets marked papers back to you very late. Not a gpa booster.
A very inspirational teacher. Definitely knows and loves what he teaches. Well organized is an understatement. He may come across as being sarcastic however, everything he does is for a reason. If he seems sarcastic, reevaluate what has been mentioned prior and you may find the reason. You'll learn from it. I have! Definitely one of the best!
I don't think he's a good teacher. He thinks he's soooo funny.. LoL.. you're not. His class is so boring.. just an hour and it seems like 4 hours.. He marks his tests so hard.. You have to be really really good in your grammar or else.. heh..
Very good professor. Kind of hard but very helpful and always there for students!
I absolutely do not think that he is a good teacher at all. He makes me hate English now.
Hard, but fair. Doesn't tolerate whiners or lazy students. If you go to class and do your work, you will do well. Kind of hot for an older guy.
he is kind of drones on a bit, but he knows his stuff and i think that if you get on his good side with the comibinatino of being a decent to good writer you can acheive a decent mark
Wow does this guy ever judge people upon appearances. Seems to give the person a grade, before he even recieves their work. Had numerous meetings with him discussing prejudice and unfairness. Tsk Tsk Paul, tsk tsk
I came in to his class with low expectations cause of these ratings...I am not the BEST student but he is a cool teacher!! Funny, nice and not a hard marker. I'm a slacker so how did other people fail when I got a good mark?

Best english teacher KUC has.

The comments he wrote on my essays were disrespectful and harsh. He's an extremely hard marker and unhelpful. He favors certain people. How is it that I have a straight A transcript and suddenly drop with this course? He doesn't explain well at all before exams. Who knew one could fail by using quotations in an essay. Did I mention boring?
DON'T GET THIS TEACHER. He is a hard marker(failed first essay because I confused authors), Is very arrogant(talks about all his possessions), Does not give an example of his expectations for marking tests, essays, Rude, makes fun of you, He wrote his own book, so his guidelines are harsh(spelling, grammar) Should teach the hardest english class.
Attend class, contribute to the discussions and you'll do fine. Tends to favor those who speak in class, which works for me. Detests whiny 1st years, but who doesnt?
Paul is an ignorant man. He has too much attitude in himself and I would never recommend any of his classes. He favours students and also has a way of dropping people's confidence level.
Paul is great. I really enjoyed his lectures. He has a straightforward lecture style and gives a lot of excellent notes. People who dislike Paul's teaching style just dont have the discipline to cope with the materials and feel that it is all Paul's fualt for them not making the grade. He is more than fair. DO THE WORK! You will not be disappointed
Paul was really good! I didn't think that his expectations were too harsh! I did bad on one essay and took his critiques seriously and I aced the next 2 essays! If you contribute to class discussions and put an effort it you should do fine! Although you do need to make sure your punctuation is good!
online course - the Prof. is late in posting materials and even later in returning them. Blunt and not open to any explanation if you made a mistake.
Aloof, sets up barricades to ensure failure, unsympathic
Paul is contemptuous and condescending. Critical theory was mandatory for my major and he is one of the worst English profs I've had in the four years I've been at Kwantlen. He is arrogant and says things in a way that make you not want to contribute in class. He must always be right so do not have a mind of your own, just regurgitate what he says.
He is a hard marker, if you refuse his urgings at one-on-one help. He goes above and beyond in his attempts to help his students understand anything that they are having difficulties with. Talk in class, this is something he really likes in students (as all prof's do). Ask questions, he will answer, even if it's for another class.
Hard marker, but take his criticisms into consideration, and you'll do better. Very opinionated. But he is a good teacher. Funny too!
This is by far a first class, first rate teacher. Very intelligent, articulate man. This has been the most exciting course I have taken this term in terms of content and quality of delivery.
Dr. Ohler, is so far the best arts teacher I have had. He is really progressive and you really learn a lot in the class. I began the class with a fail on the first essay and a c- on the second, but i came out with a B. Take his criticism, it can be hard but its true and it is really helpful in the end.
Paul is not an easy marker by any stretch of the imagination, but he is very willing to help you. Take him up on his offer to go through your essay. He also makes sure you understand the material thoroughly, so ask questions and don't be afraid to talk during class!
It's a good thing that he obviously enjoyed the subject matter otherwise I would have dropped it right away. For such a dry subject (in my opinion) he kept us all interested. Hard marker, but he is willing to help you if you ask for it.
Best English teacher at Kwantlen!Every lecture of his is like watching a dramatic speech cause he loves what he teaches.Ask RELEVANT questions!Share RELEVANT comments! He will help u if you ask for it;and u WILL learn. This class isn't for those who don't like English, and/or are immature & hav bad attitudes towards education.U have to love learning.
Honestly, i thought he was going to be horrible, but as an online english teacher HE ROCKED!! I admit, im decent at english, but he marks well and makes you LEARN. I def. dont regret taking him, just do ALLL the weekly assignments and work on your essays.
Currently taking his online course. All assignments take weeks to receive marks. After mid term and only 5% of grade is marked. I find him arrogant and rude. No personal encounters with him yet but I watched how he belittled other students during the mid term. If you are an opinionated person, DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH THIS TEACHER.
Stay away!! Very difficult, he'll rip you to shreds. You could say "the tree" and he'll think that you are plagiarising. Online classes are difficult to begin with but he's a Dr. in English. Not joking he is Dr. Paul Ohler. If you want to fail miserably with an online class, he comes highly recommended. Try someone else.
STAY AWAY..Terribly hard, unclear and arrogant. Takes months to get any marks back.Excessively hard for a first year course. BORING, just reads of the screen. I'm a straight A Student and i'm going to drop my GPA b/c of the class. DO NOT TAKE!!
He`s a very fair marker, as all university english professors should be! His lectures are a little dry, and his notes all mainly come from the textbook (I`m serious, word for word, even the examples are the same). You MUST attend class, or he gets upset. And his dorky humour is sometimes funny. He`s alright, but there are better.
Would have dropped this course had I been given more than 5% of marks by withdrawal date. Arrogant professor, giving Kwantlen a VERY BAD NAME. Professors should inspire students, not cut them down so you feel important. Much better professors out there, stay away from this one
Very hard marker, there's no pleasing him. Stay away. He takes very long in getting marks back to you. He has something against passing his students. Stay away.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Very, very difficult marker. I always got an A in English, and dropped so low with this class.Very rude, and thinks he is above everyone. Shows off his possesions. Marks very hard, especially with punctuation. Do not take him unless you want your gpa to drop. Save yourself a term of hell!
This Professor does not know what an A is. It does not seem to exist in his world. He doesn't seem to appreciate people's opinions and it feels like he enjoys making his students feel unmotivated. I should have changed teachers when I saw what I read on here, but I thought I would give him a chance. Bad idea.
Took it as online class. Didn't think he would be this bad, but he was completely horrible. To arrange a meeting takes weeks and it still didn't work out. Doesn't respond and gives same feedback for assignments. VERY harsh marker. Discourage students severely. Had no choice but to drop this course on last drop date. Don't take him!!
he was alright, easy as hell though. essays were easy. he doesnt really care if ur there or not, just do the essays he wants. theres only 5 marked assignments in the entire class anyways. and their all essays. worth like 20 percent each
He's a really funny and interesting guy to listen to. You'll want to bring a laptop to class b/c he has tons of notes. He's a very hard marker and he never really makes it clear what he expects in the essays. It takes him a long time to get marks back. All of his quizzes are just summaries of what you read. Good prof but don't expect a high grade.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! He is very arrogant and hostile. He accused several people in my class of plagiarism for no good reason/evidence. I am a 3rd year student at Kwantlen and I have NEVER had a worse prof in my life!! He marks nothing and I learned NOTHING all semester. The only thing I left with was a bad taste in my mouth!!
Horrible teacher! I missed ONE class through sickness and he assumed I wanted to fail the class. Very high expectations and brutal marker. AVOID! that's all I got to say.
Paul is a great prof, if you are a dedicated student. His classes are not for slackers or free riders. I found his lectures very insightful, and would recommend his class to anyone who would like a fresh and keen take on the world.
I can't say enough good things about Paul Ohler..he is the best/funniest prof I have ever had. His sense of humour keeps me coming to each class and his vocabulary is something I strive to one day achieve. If you are serious about english and want to learn from a funny, intelligent man (who's VERY easy on the eyes) you won't regret taking his class
Took the online course. Lots of reading. Tardiness in returning assignments. Does not enocurage dialogue between students. The best thing about the course is that it is online.
Take this course at your own risk. Instructor is looking for more than a first year standard. The course presentation says "You must be able to write competent, university-level prose to succeed in the course." He followed this to the last dot, taking marks off for the slightest inaccuracies.
not bad prof
Very funny and quite knowledgeable; a very hard marker, but I must say I appreciated how difficult he was because he was the first teacher I've ever had who actually made me a better writer. I feel I learned more in his class than in four years of English with other teachers. Extremely helpful and his lectures are always entertaining.
this teacher is unmotivational and rude. his comments are negative and basically "written putdowns". he has no tolerance for first first-year students even though this is a first-year course. HORRIBLE TEACHER. i would not recommend him to ANYONE.
He knows his material well but the I The class isn't too hard (even if you hate english) but it is quite boring. We had a lot of discussions on different types of writing. He's a bit overbearing and although he's willing to help he's not very helpful at all. If you don't like in class essays, don't take this class because he gives 2 or 3.
Very mean-spirited. Exams are relatively straight-forward but very hard marker in writing. If you aren't talented don't take him.
I hate it when some nerd students praise this professor on this website. You are misleading others! Professor Ohler is one cold hearted English teacher. He does not focus on the content of your writing, rather, he picks on the way you write. BIG mistake taking his class. I would very much want to punch the cockkyness out of his face.
Dr O. has a great sense of humor and is passionate about creativity
Picks on people in class. Most classes are boring.
A Good teacher but not an easy marker. He will definitely provide help if required
Just try to stay away from his online class. Not so helpful.
I thought he was an easy marker because i never got good grades for english during high school but i did surprisingly well in this course. His classes are really really boring and i was half asleep during most of them. Using big words and trying to be fancy wont impress him. keep it simple
I have never had a teacher so concerned with individual understanding of the literature we read. First rate teacher, definitely reccommended.
DO NOT TAKE HIS 1100 CLASS. WORST TEACHER EVER! BORING CLASS .
You have to work hard in his class but he is a very good and helpful prof. Take advantage of his office hours, he is always willing to help. Hard marker, you have to do the readings, and you have to show up for class. At least 5 pop quizzes.
He is a very hard marker. Not very humorous. Strict with people being late, even for 2 minutes. Make sure get to class on time.
hard marker and picks on students. Also will constantly pick on the same students. Not too hard of a class, but i personally did not like the way he marked, very picky. Lectures are filled with a ton of info that you will need to know. As long as you put in the effort you should do fine.
Very boring class and a hard marker.
His classes were very boring and consisted of only discussing stories read prior for most of the classes. Lots of reading of confusing short stories. Not mean like others say but not super friendly either. Luckily he no longer has a final exam. I did find his advice helpful. Overall I'd skip over him next term but not awful.
I had a 3 hour lecture with him and it went by really fast almost every week. He was actually quite kind to us, maybe because students showed that they were willing to learn. No surprises on the midterm and last in-class essay. There is one term paper you'll have to work really hard on but he will help you.
This teacher only skim topic, expect to memorize 3~4 chapter English Textbook. and only barely touch speak of the book. His classes are boring, expect students to understand the stories and expect us to obtain the same idea as him, without much or any discussion. He may not have a final, dont be trick he will screw ur grade over. He never teaches
Boring teacher, worst I have ever seen in my whole life. Doesn't know how to teach. Makes you feel bored and sleepy all the time. Tries to crack jokes but cracks lame ones.
Mr. Ohler is a great teacher. He uses the textbook rarely but when he does, its to remind us its going to be on the final exam. He cracks jokes and hes funny.
Let's just say... I was scared to walk in his class. He talks a loooot. Boring prof. English was my favorite until I walked into his class.
He likes to read a lot of boring texts. His lectures go on and make the class feel like it's never going to end. But if you ask questions, he'll really help. He likes to pick on students during lectures.
Tough marker, but he basically tells you what's going to be on the exams, and gives you plenty of time to complete assignments, so theres no excuse. Don't listen to most of these comments unless you have bad grammar and make spelling mistakes often. It's University English, you have to work hard. Take him if you want to become a better writer.
Read the home work material and review your writing before handing it in, tough marker but fair, he like working with material from the end of the 20th century, like James Joyce, Hemingway and others. Not too difficult if you put some effort into the class.
Paul is an excellent instructor. He is very knowledgable, and is willing to help students to succeed. He made American Literature enjoyable. One thing that I really like about him is that he accepts students different interpretations of the texts. Take him for an english!!
The guy is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, and clearly passionate: does not want to advance the lecture without feeling confident that the class understands the material. Uses plenty of pop culture reference to explain key ideas from the course material. Very witty. Great at explaining an incredibly confusing textbook. Literally came for the lectures.
I enjoyed Ohler's class. He is very knowledgable about the material he teaches. Just like other English courses, you have to put effort and keep up with the readings if you want to get a good mark. But the good thing about Ohler is that he is well organized and even tells what the exam will be about beforehand.
I took his English 1100 online. I enjoyed his class. He gives solid constructive feedback that helps to improve your writing skills. I also liked that we knew what was going to be on the exam before.
He is a very tough grader and does not give constructive feedback. His essays are in-class and closed-book aka you have to remember specific events in the books. I would not suggest taking this teacher if you arent strong in English yet and want constructive feedback.
He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he is teaching, very funny and he knows what he is talking about BUT he is a tough grader, I do not recommend him if you are not that good in English yet especially with writing techniques. But overall, a good teacher, gives constructive feedback, and is a helpful and open professor.
Ohler isn't a bad professor at all. The only flaw that's evident in his teaching style is that he practically assumes everybody in the class are idiots, and subsequently, this leads to him also being a hard marker. While this in itself isn't inherently bad and can potentially incite growth, it doesn't help when the guy comes off as condescending.
Paul isn't bad. He's a great lecturer but he treats the class like they're stupid. He isn't approachable whatsoever which makes seeking help difficult. He also comes across as arrogant at times and is condescending to students. His grading in inconsistent. Sometime's he's easy, others really difficult. He gives a flexible range of assignments.
Just avoid if you want to pass the course...
Really bad teacher, he treats students like they are stupid and gives them no hope to make any improvements. He told me that there was no point of me coming back to class because Id fail either way. I havent registered for my next semester yet because I have no hope for my self now...
Well, where do I start with Ohler. Avoid at all cost. Will accuse you of cheating by having someone just lookover an essay paper for you or even worse plaigirism, just because a few citations were missed unintentionally. Wow! A real piece of work! Will avoid to mark your papers until he is done his investigations! Had nightmares because of him.
Paul is one of the worst profs ever. I mean this, don't take his class. He is rude, condescending, and off topic. Toughest marker. I have redone this course and gotten an A-. Idk why he grades (1100) an intro class as a second or third-year course. Stay away from his class, so unapproachable and when you do he makes it known he's smarter than u.
His class is very frustrating. He moves very quickly through notes and expects you to keep up. He is disorganized and forgets to post documents on Moodle that were originally promised. He tends to go off track when lecturing. That being said his lectures are entertaining. He does not explain assignments well at all.
Paul is an amazing professor - that is, if youre the type of student that is willing to put in the work needed to get a high grade. If youre looking for a class that will enhance your writing and research skills, choose one with Paul. If youre looking for an easy A and hate doing assigned readings, youre better off choosing someone else.
I have taken three of Pauls classes now and he has really helped me improve as a writer. His classes are not an easy A, you will have to read a lot and put time into essays, but you will learn a lot.
Trust me, please avoid all his class, you can get higher grade.
Very Tough Grader, Doesn't explain whats expected from assignments until we receive the grade back, ENGL 1100 is supposed to be taught in way where everybody is introduced to the material and its explained whats expected and how to do them.
Avoid. Worst teacher Ive ever come across. He does not care, smirks at you/your failures and makes you feel helpless. He thinks he knows everything. If he does he would not be grading an intro English class like a 3/4 th year English class. If your mental health and money means something to you please avoid.
He does not care. Rude, selfish and brings you down. Do not take his class.
Hands down a very nice, chill and relatable professor who wants everyone to do well in his course. He is a hard marker, but the feedback he gives are very helpful and will help you to improve your writing. Participation is voluntary, but he encourages everyone to speak out.
I genuinely enjoyed his class when I took him for Fall 2019. His tests are very easy, he gave practice tests that were exactly the same as the actual test. He even gave the answers beforehand. He is essay heavy though, tough marker but gave very good feedbacks that really help.
I have taken multiple courses taught by Paul, and I would highly recommend everyone take him at least once. He is content-heavy, but he is extremely patient and considerate to those who do not understand the material. He has improved the way I read and the way I write and edit my essays.
Content talks a lot about slaves and racism in America. A lot of sad topics are explored. He is a very hard marker. Only like about four essays are what you will be graded on throughout the course. If you are an absolute expert at English an A+ then take this course. Otherwise it is a waste of money.
I don't know why so many people thought he was hard. This may have been a required course, but I ended up doing better in this class than my elective one. There are a lot of readings and the lectures can be a bit tiresome at times, but he's generally enjoyable and an easy marker.
If you communicate with him and show that you are having difficulty and working to get a better grade, he will give you some really helpful feedback and give you one on one assistance. I feel the way I got an A was by showing I was trying.
Mr Paul is a great professor who is flexible with assignments. I take his online English course and He always gives clear instructions for the assignment. As long as u follow instructions for assignments u are doing citations properly you will get great grades in his course. He is also very fast in responding emails and extends deadlines.
Paul Ohler was my instructor for ENGL 1100. He was very tough on grading. Despite having time conflict with 1 of my exam from other course, he refused to offer me another timeslot of having an alternative exam. He did not explain concepts clearly. He never replied students' emails.
I cannot say enough about Paul. His lectures are well done and incredibly interesting. (Not to mention a great sense of humor) But he also went above and beyond to help students both in his class and with other classes we were taking. All-in-all, a great guy that genuinely cares about his students. Strongly recommend.
The professor does not give marks at all and gives very little time to read a whole novel I do not recommend taking courses he Is teaching.
A good teacher overall.. but the topics he teaches are often very difficult to understand so that makes the class less appealing. In this class, you have midterm, final, and two essays. No weekly assignments. He's very helpful and willing to explain things as much as needed- both in class and during his office hours.
Not a good prof, marks way too harshly, never had a prof give me such low marks before, if you even try to go to office hours to ask for tips he will call you a bad student right to your face despite the fact that I've got multiple profs who think very highly of me, wants you to contribute during class discussions but will ignore you when you try.
I found him a fairly "middle-of-the-road" professor. He is very old-fashioned and can be strict at times, but at other times can be fun and engaging, he's inconsistent with his teaching style. You are also expected to read quite a bit but his grades were fairly easily earned in my opinion. He's a mixed bag of a professor
He is rude, not understand at all. I do not recommend taking Paul, he is such a hard marker and does not explain the material properly. He does not see students efforts either, worst prof ever.
Do not take this prof. He is not good at grading and has lots of errors in his own syllabus and curriculum provided. He is very bipolar in his teaching sense, he will say something and do something else. I wish I would have checked the reviews before I took his class.
Worst English Professor ever. Have no empathy. He's got an attitude. Never take him for the wellbeing of your mental health. He makes you buy a very expensive useless textbook. Everything is done from it but you end up learning nothing. For my other English classes, never had to buy a book.
Avoid this professor if you can. He is very picky with grading and often makes mistakes in his own course materials. I found Unstuck AI and chatting with classmates very helpful for this class.
Paul is an entirely unpleasant instructor to be around. Comes off condescending to students, takes weeks (3+) marking, refuses to answer questions, and present a generally unwelcoming environment. If you arent following everything in class there are no lecture notes or anything to aid you. This is the worst prof I've had in my 3.5 years in academia
I took his class as an elective and feel like I wasted my money on this course. There are no notes provided online and even if you do take his in class notes, they don't match what he wants you to write on the exams. He is very unclear and a very hard marker. You can't write in your own way, he basically wants you to use direct quotes from the book
We only had to do 2 assignments in the class along with a midterm and final. He was alright, a bit entitled and rude at times but mostly nice
