boring as all heck however it was a very easy A
this guy bored me to tears! but he's nice, and a pretty easy teacher.
very easy A, he is very boring however he really means well. I jsut talked to him a bit before class about random crap and got an A. take him its not bad
this teacher is extremely boring but very nice and you do nothing in the class besides go on the internet and do little essays. easy easy A and i never do good in school
Very nice guy who really tries hard to be a good teacher and make the subject interesting yet, his lectures are usually boring
This class is easy, you do three assignments each having two choices, and an open book/note midterm and final. I found the class kind of interesting, but it was three hours long, too long to sit and listen.
hes so unclear, and he knows it.. AGH
Not nearly as boring if everyone gets involved in discussion, like he encourages. He's a really nice guy, and the class itself is easy (and he's an easy grader, too). Open book/notes on all exams. Just get involved and it can be really interesting.
Easy grader, but so boring. Hated this class. He wants everyone to participate and will nag you. Easy tests, all open book and note. Talks while your trying to do tests and wont shut up. Not recommended
SO BORING but you never have to show up easy A
i never went maybe 4 times during an 8 week course. I jsut kissed some butt and took the tests got an A SO EASY
very nice, helps you with everything, great discussions in class, very understanding and willing to take the time out to help his students
Very strong accent but trys to make the class interesting, many class discussions, learn a lot of new things that change the way you write...Overall easy class but follow directions for the essays.
He is a very understanding teacher. He can be boring but only when he lectures. There are lots of group discussions and he makes it fun. I took the 8 week class which was really easy.
Really nice guy, easy grader
Paul is a great teacher. At first I was a little unsure about him but after a few classes I loved it. His class discussions are great I felt like I was taking a debate class. He is always willing to take extra time with you and I would definitely take his class again.
Nice guy, but very unclear. Easy class, but BORING for lectures. The books he picked out were interesting. Easy B, maybe A, just do the work on time.
If you do not like group work this is not the class for you, there is a lot of group work involved! He is a easy grader, and very clear in what he wants. The books he picked are very intersting & VERY HELPFUL! If you do all the work and put minimal effort into the essays you'll get a B. Take his class!!
he is very boring and dull. Easy class though. Make sure you turn in your assignments on time. Takes role.

I showed up for the class maybe 10 out of 16 weeks, missed two tests and didn't do half of the work and got a B. Make sure you participate a lot in class. He likes that. Good teacher, very excited about having internet access in class. Great guy.

Likes to do busy-work...like outlining essays in class?? I dont see how that helps. All we did this semester was split up into groups and talk about the text book. ehh.
Although the class was a little repetitive (ie. splitting into groups, presenting info to the class), it was 'ight. One of the best things is that Polloczek lets you write just about ANYTHING that's on your mind for the essays. And I do mean anything. Talk about freedom of speech. He's a mellow prof, so TAKE HIM.
Easy A class. Didn't learn too much, but insightful. A lot of art history through videos, group quizzes on reading, which no one ever did, but very easiy. I had a 7-10pm class and was there until 10 every time. Sweet guy, take him.

Maybe went to half of the classes and left half way everytime, easy A, everything is open books/notes. He wants you to do well even if he is boring. I'd recommend him.
He is an easy teacher for ENG 1A... However he tends to use up all of his teaching time by stretching simple subjects over a huge amount of time until they explode into pieces... Basically he just talks and talks and talks something that should only take a couple minutes. Rather boring and repetitive...
He is extremely unfair. I asked him to hand me a paper (an assignment) that he gave to the other students, but he did'nt want to. I recieved a 0 for that assignment...unbelievable! He admitted that he has the authority to control the class, but I think he should'nt have the authority to unfairly grade.
This class was incredibly easy. Paul is very thorough on the subject matter and is super clear with what he wants from the students. If you do the work and show up 70% of the time it's an easy A. He's hillarious too. Kind of dry, but awesome.
i thought he was great. He is much more into hearing what his students have to say. He likes to give out papers that are creative and usually interesting. Just go to class, do the easy work, and its an A
He is very easy to understand. If you're like me and dosnt enjoy english and writing papers, take this class with him. He gives us many options and makes the writing assignments fun. He can be a bit repetitive, but he can definetely get the point across.
Death. Easy class, easy tests and assignments, boring as heck. Kept us 30mins after class in a 6-9pm class. Takes an hour to explain a 2 minute thing. Easy class, but a waste of my time. Take it if you have patients. If you don't...don't take it.
Easy easy easy class but you don't really learn anything that will be of use out of his class. 3 hour class and kept us late every time. Open book exams.
so he is a nice guy and the class is easy. He will like you if you come to class everyday and participate. The only negative thing is that he is pretty boring. He could talk about one sentence in a book for an hour..seriously. I still recommend him though for people who like creative writing.
Good teacher, he cares about his students and wants to know his students opinions. Easy A, grades papers extremely easy, just follow the requirement.
He is pleasant and a little soft spoken. His lectures are on the longwinded side but he does now his subject and wants you to participate and have a dialogue. His tests were open book but were hard because they were worded tricky. Assignments are not difficult, you just have to make the effort on the few assignments.
really nice guy, very clear, homework is soo easy its basically just busy work. he always gives you options for doing essays so that nobody is forced to do something they dont want. also, you get to write about topics that are interesting to you such as: celebs, alcohol, gas prices and things of that sort. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
He is such a nice guy. Class is 3 hours long thou. An essay almost every week. Easy hmwk hes clear and easy to understand. He likes to have discussions on short stories. Hard class to get into because its a fun easy class where you actually learn
Fun approach to the subject. Fairly easy. Tells you exactly what to do. I am not a strong writer and I managaged an A. No late work, for any reason at all though so do it on time.
He is very boring. I had him for humanities showed up maybe half of the 16 week class and got a B. He is an easy grader. He seemed to be a very nice man. He keeps you for the enitire claas time though! Hopefully he is pretty easy for english as well! :) Take this class if you want an east A or B.
If you like meeting with another student outside of class to prepare an oral presentation, you're in luck--there's two of 'em (one 15-minute and one 20-minute). Two logic/fallacy exams (extremely difficult and tricky, even though they are open book). Four easy papers. More of a logic class. Boring, boring, boring. Pointless waste of time. HATED it.
He's nice enough, but boring. Does not offer much instruction or help with writing papers. Lots of group work and two oral assignments. Only a few papers to write, and none more than 4-5 pages. Grades easy on papers, but tests are hard. Lots of reading and busy work. He's big on logic.
Paul is a great man! He knows his stuff but wants you everyone to actually think for themselves! what a concept! just do the reading and put in your two cents - he doesn't judge - open to all opinions. never seen him disregard anyones opinion so dont be afraid to speak up. the readings are very interesting - some can be confusing but he will agree!
This is a pretty easy class that focus on creative writing. He grades very easy but will give you some ridiculous essay topics. I didn't like the final, it tried to trick you as opposed to seeing if you actually know the material. He will drone on monotonously and on in class so be prepared for a very boring class.
really easy class, quizzes are based on effort, tests are open book and note, no essay, just come to class and participate. You get what you put in as far as learning goes. Great teacher
Pretty easy class , open book final and midterm. And he offers a make up paper if you are not satisfied with the midterm. Go to class he has a sign in sheet and pop quizzes to take attendance. He doesn't not excuse any class absences! My infant son was in the hospital and he still didn't let me turn an assignment in late. I have heard he is really
His lectures are boring and he is a bit of a germ freak but he is really nice. Also you have to do compltely NOTHING to fail his class. He likes people who speak their opinion too. Open book midterm & final! Take the class and get over the boring part!!
Such a cool guy. This class was once a week and kind of long/never got out early, but it was fine. All you do is discuss philosophers and readings in groups-no right or wrong answers! Just a midterm, final and in-class/take home reading "quizzes." A really nice guy. Wish I could take another class with him.
He's a great guy and quite entertaining in his own commentary although class often became dull during lectures (the subject matter mostly at fault). Otherwise, he was quite engaging especially near the end of the semester.2 open book/open note tests, 3 assignments, and some reading quizzes that count for participation. (and yes, the class was easy)
this class=easy A. Love the approach he takes with teaching writing skills. Mostly small, creative essays for homework and several worksheets. The easiest 1/2 semester class I've taken!
Super Easy half-semester class. There were 5 essays (all of them were 2-4 pages) and about 12 handouts for homework. There were two easy tests, both open book. Always get out on time. He rambles but he's funny. Every class has group work, and you present in a circle at the end. I highly recommend him, English is my worst subject and I got an A.
You know what,Polloczek is a great teacher and a nice guy. He's not super stoked if you're going to be late or miss class, but sometimes you're going to have to because his class can be kind of..slow..The assignments aren't too difficult and I feel like a more capable writer. In fact,he really encourages creative writing. Im definitely pro polloczek
Easiest teacher of my life. Gives easy topics to write about and very current. Looks more for creativity and following guidelines than grammar and punctuation. If you can get him, do it.
Easiest Teacher ever! Coolest thing is you learn alot too. tests are open book, quizes are class quizes, nice and intelligent professor, what more can you ask for?
Super, super easy class. Interesting discussions, although sometimes (esp "big circle" time) can seem slow and pointless. Wish he would lecture more. I liked writing on the quizzes. Very understanding though, and super cool about gender equality.
Boring
Professor Polloczek made the class better by having the students do discussions & teach the class. (8 week summer class) Consists of 6 assignments where student chooses. Midterm & final are open book/open note, & an oral presentation. Choose the oral presentation because he makes the research paper purposely hard so you pick the oral presentation.
Avoid, Gives quiz on 1st day of class, pointless group activities, rambling aimless lecture, very rigid on not dismissing class even 1 min early, emphatic on using overpriced but unhelpful text books. Claims that "it't not a grammar class" but his focus is on high school grammar lecturing, nice guy but belongs teaching 9th grade.
Pretty easy teacher. Lots of group activities and can sometimes his lectures put you to sleep. Gives out random quiz's and always takes attendance. There is a midterm, and a final, that's it. If you don't like your midterm grade you can replace it by writing a paper. Class gets out early most days. Overall a good class and easyA
When he gets talking he sometimes can't stop. He tries to make the class fun. Tons of group activities, easy quiz's, and passes out a roll sheet usually. You will get an A, if you put effort in you'll learn something too.
Easy A. Boring and you will most likely forget everything you learn.
Chill guy, cares about the class but ridiculously monotone (from germany) boring as a mofo and has hour long lectures that seem endless. Easy class though, open book midterm and final and open book quizzes, helpful but bring other hw because it's the only way to stay productive and not pass out. Take his Humanities class
Avoid at all costs.
Class goes right until it should be over then add 10 more minutes. Nice guy, but really boring. You'll never get an A. Mid-term and quizzes easy then he screws you on the final. He says he'll look at attendance if your between grades, but thats not true. Avoid at all cost!
Great Approach! Rather than lecturing, he has groups deliver the reading material! Nice guy too! Strict attendance policy!
Teacher is a complete joke. Easiest A I've ever had..show up to class all semester and be able to skim through a page per question on the midterm/final (24 questions) and thats all. This class had a mandatory 2 page paper...30 minutes and your done. Class is unbelievably boring but if you go and sleep your fine. would recommend..SO EASY
nice guy. however, kept randomly changing essay prompts, tests, etc. discussions are ok but go on for too long. you're never sure how you do on a test or essay. attendance very important, lots of discussions and reading as well as group-work. usually goes over class time-limit despite the class being four hours long.
the class was so boring. he just talks and talks and talks . didnt learn anything .the essays subjects was so stupid. you can go and sleep during the class . the textbook was awful.do not take any classes with him.
Worst class ever. I'm not sure what he was trying to teach us... Had the students deliver discussions and when he does speak he goes on and on. Class goes over time. His mood always changes. Avoid taking his class. He didn't even allow our class to have the full amount of time scheduled for the final. He is an awful teacher.
Worst class ever. He never lets you out on time and puts you to sleep with boring rambling lectures and makes students presents reading topics. He does not grade fairly and his mood changes often. You must attend class. If you take him its a big mistake.
BORING but SUPER EASY. Midterm and final are open book and open note. He randomly gives out quizzes that you can work on with other people in the class. Also there is one assignment that you can choose either to do an oral, a video response, or a term paper, which i did and it was super easy!
Interesting class. Nice teacher. The way the material is presented ensures that even students who haven't done their at home reading learn about the topic.
The class will not be let out early. Anyone that shows up should get a B. This class is all about students attitude. I would take this class due to it fulfilling a requirement and only needing to read for about 15 minutes a week before each class. He is a nice guy.
Easiest class ever. I missed 3 classes consecutively and still passed with an A. Attendance mandatory, he does not let you sign in if you come in late. Monotone & can get boring but the easy A made it worthwhile. Open book tests & fun group "circles". Material is interesting if you like history. Highly recommend!
This class is a very easy B. The downside is that it has a lot to do with personality. If he likes you, your set, if he doesn't your out of luck. He doesn't teach, and the group circles and discussions never relate to the tests, which are impossible to finish in the given amount of time. He also cuts the final time in half! He doesn't grade fair.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Doesn't teach and is unfair. He plays favorites and rambles on with topics that have nothing to do with his tests. His mood often changes and you never know what to expect. It was a real disappointment to be in his class. Avoid avoid avoid!
He is a really good teacher. I liked his class a lot
Heis a really good teacher! He is nice, and always explains EVERYTHING.Theonly real homework we ever have are the essays which he always gives us a lot of time to finish, and the tests are open book! If you just pay attention in class and follow the rules on the syllabus you should have no problem.just beware though, its 4 hoursand he likes to ramble
Okay I have no idea where these other raters are getting this whole "his mood changes" thing from, because he ALWAYS in a good, happy mood in my class. The class is extremely easy but you have to go to class. He's very helpful also! The material is boring, but just stick through it for that easy A!
He didn't teach. The only time he would talk to any of the students was to ask about the newest movies. Nothing that we went over in class appeared on the final and the average grade of the class was a C. Worst experience I've had at Saddleback thus far.
I literally NEVER went to class and I got a B. had I gone to a few more classes I would've gotten an A for sure. super easy, open book midterm and final. class was pretty much a joke, interesting and fun but you probably wont learn anything unless you're really into philosophy and make the effort to actually read the book
I loved Prof. Paul. His class discussions were so entertaining and thought provoking and i loved his teaching style. he has a funny personality when you get to know him. he doesnt take attendance and no homework just reading. I have taken three of his classes and they have all been easy and enjoyable!
Great professor, very clear on assignments, and it is not very hard to get an A. However, the book he uses is not very useful, and the essay themes could be better. Overall, it was a good class.
I found this class interesting! Paul is very funny and is great with all of his students. He is very nice and tries to make the class fun. The only homework is reading and occasional worksheets to take home. The tests are a little hard but they are open book tests so it makes the tests easier.
I hate English, but I enjoyed Polloczek. Boring, but easy. Nice guy!
Definitely an easy class, all quizzes and tests are open book, and there are only five assignments the entire semester. The way he teaches is rather boring, but the easy grade even though I hardly went made it worth my while.
This one teaches nothing. just he likes to chill. if you want to waste your time and money, then take it.
Unless you're a fan of creative writing and debating, do not take this class. Prompts were rarely thesis-based and always unclear. In-class discussions (circle time) were aimed to create arguments between students over controversial topics. Probably a good humanities teacher..
The classwork makes it easy to get an A but it requires hard work just to make it through class. The entire class period is a waste of time and the only reason to attend is to do the reading quizzes at the end of class. The tests are open book so very easy. Again it's an easy A but each class is extremely boring.
He is a really nice person. Prof. Paul is a little long in the lecture department, and it can get boring, but if you read the text, and come to class you will get a good grade. It was interesting, and then long winded sometimes, but overall a well rounded presentation of the material.
This class seems to be an easy A but he only gives a VERY small percentage an A and it all depends on if he likes you or not. His tests are VERY VERY hard and he honestly doesn't have any sympathy or remorse if you miss a class or an assignment. This class is also extremely boring so if you make it through alone that's an accomplishment.
Professor Paul is honestly the nicest professor I've had in a really long time. If you meet his criteria on the papers, do decent on the final and midterm, and just show up to class you'll get an A. Yeah his class can be a bit dull and low-key, but it's not an impossible A.
Literally did NOTHING for the entire class except take reading quizzes and discuss them after, take a break, and watch a long documentary. THAT'S IT. Towards the end of the semester, we did oral presentations instead of reading quizzes. 3 assignments, 2 tests, participation - that's your grade. I didn't learn anything, but perfect for an easy A.
DO NOT ENROLL IN THIS CLASS. He has changed his class structure and it is worse. He has group presentations the first half of the class, which comes down to students teaching each other useless information. He lets you take home reading quizzes that have 2 question consisting of 2 parts and those have 4 parts within them miss one its all wrong!
This guy gives you a C on every paper. He has very strong bias towards those that agree with him and you will get ripped to shreds if your papers offend him. Know that you will never get out early because he doesn't respect your time and will waste it talking about nothing for two hours in a monotone voice. Run!
Professor Polloczek is a great professor who loves Humanities. I took his Gods Clocks and Visions course, and it was life changing. Polloczek's courses are challenging in good ways and help you THINK. If you team up with other students interested in the class, you will do really well. His lectures are long, but read the books and you'll follow it.
Great professor. Loved his class. He's always asking if we need anything explained. You will never leave early though. You have no test or quizzes only 6 essays that he give you 2-3 weeks to write. Read the adios book and be there for every lecture on adios and you'll pass.
Class time consists of long discussions about anything and everything and a lot of group work. DO NOT take this class if you don't like speaking in class. The professor is nice, but he is a very tough grader. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE ESSAY PROMPTS. He will mark you down for the smallest formatting mistakes.
His expectations and standards are quite high. If you prefer to fool around, don't take the class.
We discussed intense topics when reading an essay from Best American Essays. I enjoyed learning a new method of writing creatively. I wont lie, it can be difficult. He does not grade easy, plus he expects you to know your foundations. This class is meant for those who want to learn something new and those who want to work as a team. I really liked
Very confusing grading. Doesn't make it to his own office hours. No lectures, only group readings and presentations. Open book midterm and final. Reading quizzes every class period. A LOT of reading, participation, and attendance is a must.
I had his class from 6-10pm every Thursday which was almost unbearable because he is a very soft spoken slow teacher and his lesson plans are very poorly thought out. I am a very competent writer and Ive had trouble getting a B. He is a very subjective grader so do not take him unless you do not care about your grade.
Bad and boring teacher. you pass the class only if you like him. Skip the class.
Nice guy outside of the classroom. In class however, he loves to act more like a lawyer than an English teacher. Always has group discussions on the textbook material. Office hours are the only way to get above a C on every essay. Says the same things over and over when "explaining" things. You don't take this class, you survive it.
I wish I can write more than a paragraph. If you do not mind left-leaning ideology being shoved down your throat, any dissonant opinion closeted, or having someone who hides behind his tenure to write falsified reports about you (and have a Dean who takes his side), this class is for you. Great if you do not think or stand up for yourself.
This class is a minefield. Honestly, I liked the readings an such, the group projects were alright an I learned about people. Depending who is attending shapes a lot of experience. Can be a little Schmoozy people misrepresenting themself. The techniques taught are interesting - strong syllabus - is followed, be ready for a lot of exposed nerves,
Over a year removed from this class and he is still, to this day, the single worst teacher I have ever had. His whole class is dumb group discussions, and he is an incredibly unreasonably grader.
Polloczek takes a humanities based approach (group discussions) instead of relying on lectures. As the other reviews make clear, he does indeed grade rather harshly, but he makes himself available outside of class and your essay will improve if you visit. He also maintains a sense of levity through his humor. Get ready to work for a good grade!
Your graded on 5 essays that you have to write. There is really no lecture its all group discussion he calls little circles and big circles. Hes a nice guys the only thing he is a stickler about is missing class and having your phone out.
I went to the first lecture to suddenly realize this was the last time I was ever stepping back into that classroom. Be aware that he will be grading you very hard and there's no extra credit to make up for it. One last thing, for any vegans out there he talks about Tacos and Taco trucks every other sentence!
The dude treats his class like a high school class. The worst Professor Ive had so far at saddleback.
You go to his class and he spreads out a 30 minute lecture to cover the entire 2 hours. Take this class if you just want to sit in class and waste time. Doesn't actually grade anything, just assigns everyone the same grade (A or B) for every essay.
This was the first and only B of my college career. During his office hours he says your paper looks perfect, and then he gives you a B just to establish his authority. Definitely felt more like a creative writing course. The only thing I enjoyed about this class was the open discussion environment. If you care about your GPA, keep away.
Took this class before COVID. Was an easy A. Lectures would be spread out for the duration of 2 hours & for an evening class.. rip. It was all easy group work and we would snack in class. This is a composition class so it was always essays but if you had any questions you just come to his office hours and he'll always help.
I just finished my ENG 1A class on the 12/16/2020. I found Professor Polloczek to be a great professor. He was always available to discuss ideas for papers, proof read drafts, and assist students with learning disabilities. He was very sympathetic to students struggling with mental health during the pandemic. He really cares about his students.
Prof polloczeck is awesome!
I dont know what all the crying down below is about. Paul is a great professor, you can tell he really loves what he does! With that being said you really do have to put in the work to get the grade that you want, he doesnt just hand it to you. You have to be ready to put in the work!
Horrible worst teacher ive ever had Honestly, he only puts essays in the gradebook nothing else which sucks.
Paul is super nice, funny and overall great guy!He makes sure you feel included during class! That is him as a person, but as an instructor..?Complete opposite!I rooted for him,but he isnt open minded when it comes to grading.Instructor did not instruct us on how to succeed with higher than a C.Adore him as a person but not as an instructor:( L class
Professor has a very rigid grade
He doesn't teach and his in class is mostly a waste of time. Most of what you need to know for your essays is in his emails, and you usually only get all the info you need for the essay a week or so before it's due. That aside he's a very hospitable person who will remember whatever you tell him about life or just class work in general.
Tries to gain rapport with students which is commendable, but the students I discussed this with had more of a creepy impression of the man. The lectures are worthless as applying the information presented is never discussed. Subjective, unrelatable and losing his ability to communicate. Look for any other professor.
This is single handedly the worst teacher I've ever had. He does nothing but waste time and force you to do unnecessary tasks, and once you question him he sends a code of conduct email and threatens you. Overall a soft excuse of a teacher and man. Would never take again.
Terrible just terrible
Professor Polloczek is a nice guy, but his teaching style can be hit or miss. The class is writing-intensive, but he's helpful during office hours. unstuck study and ChatGPT were lifesavers for essay prep.
• Grading is only based on 5 essays, each out of 4 points. Purposely assigns the first graded assignment after the drop period. • Classes consist of getting in groups to read and present the readings, however by the time of the readings the class time already ends. • Assigns ~8 hours a week of textbook readings
The worst class I've ever taken in my life.
