He is a pretty good teacher. He is a hippy with hair down to his waist. Strong LIBERAL opinions throughout the course. You have to do the reading and study a lot to get an A, I put in minimal effort and got a B. He's interesting but sometimes boring.
Prews a good prof. He knows what hes talking about and if you are interested in the material it'll keep your interest. A lot of people do get bored with him though.
Pretty cool guy. Gives study guides so you know what to expect on tests. Halfway through year started study groups that make it even easier. Obviously liberal. Can get an A with a lil effort
very cool and laid back guy. tests are not bad if you study. you don't really even need to go to class all the time because he posts all the notes and study guides online. his fake questions on tests make me giggle. shows very interesting films. sometimes he rambles about something for a whole lecture that isn't necessary material
Prew is an awesome Prof and person. His lectures do sometimes get boring, but when he notices people dozing off, he'll tell a joke containing a F-bomb to wake those people up. He also gives easy exams, and every question on the exam is given to you on a study guide beforehand. TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!
Paul is awesome!!! He is a true lefty, very inspirational and all about activism. He really cares about what students take out of his class and his tests are super easy if you pay attention. He loves his job and I believe he is helping to change the world by educating his students on issues that really matter.
Prew is the man. He's a great teacher. His tests are easy, and gives you a study guide the week before and has every question on it. The class day before the test, he goes over the study guide and gives you every answer. Take his class if you can.
He is very willing to sit down and help you. He will make special appointments to meet with you to go through the study guide and he doesn't quit explaining it until you fully understand. He keeps class rather interesting as well! Take any class you can with him.
Great teacher, but does lean to the left quite a bit. I'm a liberal myself, and even I found it ridiculous how biased he could be. Other than that, the tests are easy, the class material is always interesting, and Prew is a helluva guy. I would strongly suggest taking this class.
The most liberal person you will ever meet in your entire life...he does try to keep it fairly objective...but it is so obvious it's laughable...a great guy though...very helpful
boring
very nice teacher, always helpful
THEE most LIBERAL guy in the place.he shows some really interesting and thought provocing videos.you can tell this guys is very liberal though, try challenging him once and ask to see a something conservative once, watch him jump to defending his supposed unbias opinion.cool guy,but being moderate i find he judges right wing a bit too extremeley.
He's very good, and liberal. He makes it clear that we have a huge say in our world.
Take this class. It's very interesting. 20% of the grade was based on doing in class assignments. If you do it, you get the points. Tests are very easy because everything on the test was on the study guide. So if you attend class and do the study guide you should have no problem getting an A. Prew makes class worth attending,
hes a cool guy. teaches well, and his class is pretty interesting. the class is easy too, i ended up with a 97. just go to the review sessions, and read some of the book the day of the test, and you should be set. show up to class cuz he gives inclass assignments sometimes, they count for quite a bit of the total grade.
Class was a little boring for me. Prew is a pretty good speaker, tests are easy. You should go to class, because sometimes he does in class assignments for attendance credit. Some of the films he showed were pretty interesting
Very nice and very liberal. Tests were okay- he did review sessions before every single test that you should go to and then that takes care of the studying. final wasn't mandatory. laid back.
Prew teaches politics not sociology. If you are VERYYYYYY liberal you will do just fine; if your not find a different teacher.
I thoroughly like Prew's teaching style. I completely recommend taking this class. Sociology 101, pretty much a great 3 credit course. Yes, at first his reading assignments can be confusing, but really they're easy, and he's great.
this guys i a complete joke, all he does is talk and teach politics. You learn nothing about sociology in this class. the text you read is one that he put together. DO NOT TAKE HIM AS A PROFESSOR... i wish he was fired
Prew is a great professor. In order to do well you need to go to class and do the reading assignments, but his lectures are interesting and always kept me thinking even after I left. He offers extra credit and has review sessions for all tests. He seems to be liberal, but certainly doesn't push his views on you. I definitely recommend this class
Prew is good pro he knows his stuff ..... a lot students don't like him because he tells them the truth
This is not a soc. class, more of learning about different views (his views) of many different things. He presents it well, however it is not a real soc. class
This guy is a joke. Not only are his views ludiicrous, but you have to memorize useless facts not even related to Sociology in order to get a good grade. Homework is due at ridiculous times, you're not allowed to start until after lectures but it's due 6 am the next day.
Extremely boring class. All the views are his own, and kind of difficult to understand. I would not reccomend as a night class!
I took his Soc 101 night class. Boring at points. He has review sessions before every test, 1 test is dropped so you technically can just skip one. Powerpoints for everything and lots of video clips. Weekly homework is easy 10 pts. Final is EASY A, all questions taken from previous exams which he gives to you. Gives random in-class points.
He is extremely liberal and will argue with you if you go against his opinions. I was kindly told to "shut up" in his class. You are forced to memorize pointless facts that have nothing to do with Soc. I DO NOT recommend this class!!!
This guy is insane. He is the most liberal man you'll ever meet and makes you memorize the most pointless facts, facts that have next to nothing to do with sociology and completely liberal. Easy A, but he tricks you and makes you think you're doing bad until the very end.
easiest class ever. just go on fridays because he gives in class assigments, so that the people that skipped lose out.
I would consider myself to be liberal but he is so unbelievably biased to the left side that it makes me angry.
The whole semester you talk about political lenses and how you can't always believe what you hear. Well Prew speaks through his own democratic lense every day in class.
I LOVE PREW! honestly one of the coolese prof. i have had. i would definitely recommened him. he shows interesting videos and cracks jokes about himself - which makes class fun. super laid back too! i took sociology in highschool and hated it, but have enjoyed it this year with him. if you go to class, do the reading assignments - easy B.
Prew is a great teacher! He really cares about his students, and cares about the well being of others. Yes he is liberal, but he doesn't force his opinions down your throat, he honestly doesn't. He's a very smart guy and he has a good mind set. You can get an A if you try.
Teaches you nothing about sociology except the definition, all he talks about is his liberal views of the world and if anyone says he doesnt press his views on you is idiotic!
He made class interesting and worthwhile to come to. I enjoyed the class and I learned a lot. He is a very good professor and very fair.
worst teacher i have ever had all he did was talk about himself and tells us his views on things but never would tell us other views to get the full picture of things. very bad soc. teacher
prew is a nice guy, but i wouldnt take this class at night because sometimes it feels like its dragging on. he teaches a lot about his views, but others too. if you have questions, just ask because he is very willing to help!
He teaches his opinions more than anything. Tests were kind of hard and if you miss class do not expect any mercy.
he teachs sociology you guys are ****in morons leavin bad comments .of course he is going to talk about his views on things because that is sciology. i got respect for prew because here really cares about the world and his teachins shows it.
I love how a bunch of Freshman are on here bashing about him teaching "his views" its sociology people, it studies society and a lot of it challenges your pre-existing beliefs. There are not "his views" but rather views of Sociologists who have done studies and analyzed society. Your in college to challenge and question things!!!
Very good grader and has a lot of good information that makes you think. Just read the text and show up to class and you will be set! Study guides are really helpful as well!
Prew is the man! I took theory with him first and have take two more classes with him sense. He may express his views but his views are completley backed up by the very articles he assigns. READ the articles with an OPEN mind and you might find yourself having those same kinds of views...dont scared, you can question things
The class was fine. Grading seemed kind of weird... make sure you pay attention to that when he explains it in the beginning of the semester. All over all this class was frustrating for me because I disagreed with a lot of things that he said. Even if I don't agree with his views, he seems to really care about his students and like his job.
I am very liberal but still try to consider myself open minded. Although Prew was a great teacher and made it very easy to get an A if you go to class and especially go to the study groups, he did focus very strongly on his extreme left viewpoints. I have spoken to other liberal professors and they even find him extreme. easy class if you're smart.
GREAT techer. very helpful and clear. He is funny and very smart i would take another class with him.
He likes to go on rant about how bad our generation is. He talks mainly about his "progressive" views (they are very liberal). He is very biased and does not give you the full picture on anything. It is probably the reason he is a sociology prof. If you have any questions he is more than willing to help you out. I dreaded going to his class.
He says "right" after every time he tries to prove a point or give you one of his personal views. He only gives one side to the story, and if you want the other side you will have to look it up yourself. Go to class and do the study guide and you have an automatic b. Its like he practically hand outs good grades just to pass people. Quality teacher
Great teacher, I really enjoyed his class and hope to take more. He takes a huge interest in his students and is very approachable and helpful. A lot of people complain about his "extreme liberal views" but honestly, especially for college aged students republican/right wing policies are just wrong from a sociological perspective.
This class was unbelievably easy. I found it ironic that he showed a movie about the fleecing of todays youth and was up in arms about how kids can just sleepwalk their way through college with passing grades & very little effort because the professors don't challenge them-but he is totally that guy!!!Unreal.
Awesome guy. Probably my favorite professor yet. Cool dude. Really easy class too. Lots of extra credit. Overall easy class in general. He likes to say "yeah....yep" (mostly when people are asking questions)a lot. Haha. He's also really funny.
Very passionate about his job. People claim he is left-wing biased but if you keep an open mind, you'll find that he cares more about exposing the injustices that surround us than pushing views on anyone. You have to understand that he takes a sociological approach, and it is hard to do that and not lean towards the left (at least in my opinion).
Unfortunately, Professor Prew teaches liberal politics and not sociology. Prepare to regurgitate his viewpoints on assignments and tests, even if they are more opinion than fact. Very easy class. Professors should teach their own subjects and not use the podium to espouse their political viewpoints.
Prew. is probably my favorite professor yet. people complain on him being left sided, bt realitisic it didnt bother me one bit. If you need help ever he will hlep you out a lot. Extra credit etc. Great teacher
How open-minded you are to politics will definitely define how you like this class. I found it very enlightening and interesting. Definitely my favorite class and favorite professor. He is very down to Earth and enjoys making jokes. If you keep yourself open to new and controversial ideas, you will excel in this class.
Prew is agreat professor. He is easy to listen too, brings up interesting topics, and is very willing to help. There are many extra credit options and the material is easy to understand and stuff most already know. Great as a gen ed. Definetly a breeze.
I wish i leaned as much about Sociology as i did about Liberal Politics. Prew is a nice guy and easy to understand but some of his theories are so extreme and bias. Here's some advice for his test. If there's ever an answer that blames either Whites, Republicans, or America, its probably the right one. And dont buy all the books, you only use his.
When I signed up for his Sociology 101 class I must have missed the subtitle "The Liberal Manifesto". Don't get me wrong I have nothing wrong with liberal people, but I didn't sign up to get preached at. A few tips for the class: if you ever are asked a question and given the opportunity to blame white people, men, or corporations, go with that.
One of my two favorite professors so far! Some say he's very liberal, but as an independent, I strongly believe he tells it exactly how it is. He explains concepts extremely well and is always willing to work with you in order to obtain the grade you want!
Very helpful and understanding. Uses powerpoint, class discussions/interactions, visual examples and videos for class and makes what you're learning clear. Answers any questions. Very open-minded and I learned tons from this class!
Paul Prew is my favorite person ever. So excited and well educated about Sociology,he explains concepts so well and really opened my eyes to issues and sociology in general. He's willing to do anything for his students, as well. The readings are interesting and eye opening, especailly when compared to Psych theory. LOVE Paul!
One of the coolest human beings to walk the earth. Learned a lot of unique things.
Best professor so far!
He's a very honest guy and is not embarrassed to do silly things in front of everyone. First thing that he teaches is the sociological imagination. If you understand this concept, you can pretty much take all of his curved multiple choice exams and get an A.
Great person. Great professor. Will break his back to help his students. His opinions may be a little out there but he is one of the smartest guys around. Just do your work and you'll get an A.
Instead of Introduction to Sociology, Prew should rename this class Introduction to Liberalism. If you're liberal you'll love this guy, but if you're conservative it sucks to attend class.
One of the best professors I have ever had.
Prew''s enthusiasm for the field translates into a class that was not only informative and laid the foundation for understanding sociology but also inspired me to declare sociology as my major.
Very good Prefessor and really knows his stuff. A lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Im currently in Sociology 101. There are no test in class except for the final. Bases grade off of quizzes taken online and participation. There are a few assignments here and there, but they are easy and he's goes over them in class.
Not sure why people say he is Liberal but I guess. He is a very good professor, I thought. I was very interested in this class and it kept my attention all the time. Lectures are not long and he let us be done with class a week early. He has his opinions just like the rest of us but I learned a lot and I definitely would take the class again!
I really liked how his class did not have any big tests. There are quizzes every week, but they are much less stressful.
Very easy class with no tests. Just weekly quizzes which are easy. Professor Prew really knows what he is talking about and is very passionate on many topics talked about in class.
Paul, you're the man. At first, I did not enjoy attending class because he frequently called on me to answer a question in front of the entire lecture hall, but as the course moved on I settled in. Paul gave an unforgettable lecture on the final day of class that truly moved me in so many ways. I highly suggest taking this course.
Dr. Prew is extremely liberal, but I've yet to meet a sociologist who isn't. His class is extremely easy, show up to class, attendance is 20% of your grade, no tests either, just quizzes. There is a bit of reading, but overall was quite an interesting class and would recommend it!
Highly recommend any of his classes! He's passionate about everything he teaches and it definitely shows in his classeslectures. The topics he covers are always very interesting and he really makes you think about things from a new perspective! Attendance is apart of your grade, but not mandatory. There's weekly quizzes, but they're not difficult.
Easiest class I've taken in college. Weekly quiz or two online & have class once a week. Learned some pretty interesting stuff so I would recommend it.
I am very much enjoying this class. First class in college that I like to go to and am engaged in. Highly recommend his classes. Makes the classes worth going to and the lectures interesting. Attendance does count towards grade but if you miss there are lots of extra credit opportunities. No tests, just weekly quizzes & assignments.
Grading is very simple and straight-forward. I took a hybrid lecture class. Grading depends on if you read the material. Homework was unnecessary, even if we discuss it in class, he would ramble about stuff I could care less about. Take for only major!
Make sure you buy the textbook and READ IT. You will not do well on weekly quizzes if you do not read the text books.
Weekly quizzes online, often have to watch an online video/film and complete quiz. You get attendance and participation points. Long chapter readings quizzes are hard for the readings. Lectures seem very long, hard to keep eyes open.
There are a lot of LONG reading assignments that you are quizzed on weekly, and there are also A LOT of LONG videos that you need to watch outside of class, which you are also quizzed on! It's an easy A, but you need to put in the time!
Lectures are long and boring. Fails to expand on different points of view and is completely one-sided.
Not the information I was expecting from a First Year Seminar class. I learned a lot more about history and how the Native Americans lived than I did about living on my own or how to do well in college courses. I ended up dropping the course because it was pointless and I learned the same stuff in my history class.
I took Sociology 101 with Paul. it was a decent class, just his lectures are very boring. NO FINAL, NO PAPERS, only online quizzes every week. Was a pretty easy class, just somewhat boring. Must buy a $170 e-book though. He also takes attendance.
He is the nicest person Ii've ever met but long and boring lectures AND assignments are too long and a lot you may turn in your assignments at the end of the semester without penalty.
Best class of my first semester. Both the teacher and the material are very interesting. Quizzes are online with no tests or final. You have to try, but not all that hard. Prew is extremely inspirational, kind of anti-establishment, but an awesome professor nonetheless. Take the hybrid class with him, now!
He gives weekly quizzes but there are no exams or finals. You need above a 95% to get an A and he also takes attendance. At the end of the semester he will drop the lowest grade in each category though.
Best teacher at MSU
I was struggling with my weekly quizzes. He sat me down and went through my quizzes with me and ended up getting 100% on them for the rest of semester. Great guy, no tests or exams but makes you work for you grade.
My favorite class in college so far. You need a 94% to get an A but very easy to attain. You have to go to class for points and you get participation points. No tests, just weekly quizzes and sometimes homework/video to watch. Very easy material to understand. Great class and great teacher. I would take again if I had to.
There are weekly quizzes (all online) as well as videos that you'll need to watch. No in-class exams and no finals, which is nice, but his grading system can really mess you up since 94+% is considered an A and it goes down from there. Extra credit is always offered but checking the calendar to see when it's due is definitely a must.
He's a really nice down to earth guy. He's easy to follow in lecture. The lectures can get long sometimes though. There are weekly quizzes and test that are both timed and an occasional movie quiz which is timed to. He gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities.
I really loved this class, and Dr. Prew was amazing. Grade is based on weekly quizzes, which are based off the chapter that he discusses in class, and attendance/participation. He is very willing to provide any assistance/accommodations should you need it. Extra credit is available for attending cultural events on campus.
He talks a lot and all he talks are very vague or way sounds like his own opinion. I could see why people like him but it is challenging enough to attend class just listening someone without learning it. you have to read a lot and always need to be present.
A pretty easy class, he makes it easy to pass as well, but hard to get a good grade unless you work hard. Go to his classes because there's participation and he also gives you a lot of chances to earn extra credit. My grade went from a B+ to an A just because of extra credit
He is very passionate about his studies, but his lectures can get very long and boring. He also takes attendance and it counts toward your grade. All the quizzes are online and there is no final. There are also many opportunities for extra credit.
Do the readings and the quizzes will be easy they are all online. The grading is more difficult equals to the amount of work you do. A lot of the class is showing up and participating.
This class was extremely easy. You are graded on attendance and online survey participation in class (As long as you answer, you get 100%). You get weekly quizzes which come straight from the textbook. He is very left sided with his lectures and can be boring at times. His lectures have absolutely nothing to do with the quizzes.
Dr. Prew is a laid back professor. He cares about his students and shows that he wants to give out good grades with the amount of extra credit he offers. If you do the readings and quizzes you will pass.
Make sure you understand the grading criteria! When I had him for Sociology 101 an 85% meant a C.
He lectures the entire period, which gets really old really fast, and the information is never on the quizzes. There's weekly quizzes, based on the chapter from his online textbook (you can just search the answers.) He grades on a lot of stuff, but his grade scale is really wack, so do all the extra credit events you can! also, no exams.
Talks a lot but overall he's a good professor. You won't pass the class without reading and showing up.
Great professor, just can be boring at times.
Paul Prew himself knows a lot about his area, but sometimes its a little too much. He can talk the whole class about one topic. Also, the lecture has group discussions in it, which I don't really want in a lecture. The plus of the class is that there are only weekly quizzes that you can google the answers and get 100%. Long lectures, easy grade.
Paul Prew's Soc101 class was pretty hard. His grading scale is totally awful and it is hard to pass his class. He does give out a lot of extra credit . Drops lowest quiz score. Only lectures about things that are his point of view on the society of the world. Nice guy just a hard grading scale.
DO NOT TAKE WITH PAUL PREW!!! His grading scale is whack, I have an 87.5% and that is a B-, his class kept me from the deans list. Also, if you email him about your grade he will drop your grade a half letter. He is so one sided about the topics he talks about and sucks as a professor. Avoid him at all costs!!!!!!
Paul Prew is a great professor. As long as you read and take notes, you will do well on the quizzes that are weekly. Also, do the extra credit assignments.
Must read, no midterm or final. Quizzes every week.
Quizzes every week that are on topics not always covered in class, so you have to read. Attendance is mandatory he takes it and participation is a lot of your grade. Does offer a lot of extra credit but you have to do work for it.
Grading scale is awful. Very one sided. Everything he talks about is to prove his own political beliefs. If you schedule office hours he is nice. He let me redo some of my quizzes that i didn't do very well on in his office. He gives assigned seats and takes attendance everyday.
Enjoyed this class! Every other class there is a group assignment, pay attention to the films they are important for the in class assignments. If you do poorly on the outside quizzes, stop into his office and he will help you get your grade up.
Prew's grading scale is really weird. If you get below 70% in the class, you fail. Classes are really boring but mandatory or you will lose credit. If you go up to/email him to ask for a grade bump or another question, he will take points off of your grade (it's in the syllabus). Overall, not a fun class or a very good professor.
Grading scale is wack... Anything below a 70% normal grading in his class is technically a F... So basically you have to get a 80% just to pass the class.
Honestly, I think the people who wrote the bad reviews on him are just not intelligent. All you have to do is show up to class and do the in-class activites to get a good grade in this class. He drops the lowest score in each grading catagory and offers extra credit. Don't look at the bad reviews when deciding if you want to take his class!
Professor Prew is great. I'm not sure why people think his class is difficult. If you show up to class and do the easy quizzes every week, you will get an A. Pay attention to the videos in class and read the required text and you will do fine on quizzes. Great class, great professor. He is always willing to help you get your grade up.
Favorite prof. This was a super hard class for me but he made it so much easier to understand. A lot of reading and tough material to grasp. I would take more classes by him for sure! I learned so much from him just in the one course. Go to lecture!!! And read the material over and over again. Specific, open-ended questions on the tests.
I took this class my second year and did all the assignments on time with detailed work, ended the class with an 86% which was a C+. Not very hard just a whack grading schedule, I probably wouldn't take another class with him because of the grading.
Prof. Prew is a really good professor! He wants his students to understand the material. The only thing I do not enjoy about his class is the weekly readings. There is A LOT OF READING, so just be prepared! He is also very understanding when it comes to students not knowing the material very well. TAKE PROF PREW!
Prof. Prew was such an amazing teacher to have this semester. His class is so interesting as well! The one thing I will say is do NOT skip class. Participation is weighted heavily on your grade, so do not skip class! There is a lot of reading but it is so interesting to learn. Overall this course was amazing and I would take it again!
Professor Prew did a fantastic job teaching his class, and he was very understanding when it came to almost anything. He clearly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. The only downside is the strange grading scale and heavy focus on attendance. However, because most of the class is pass/fail it wasnt too hard to earn a good grade.
Completely one sided perspective. He is not even remotely open to opposing view points and will try to belittle you in front of the class should you bring up something that disagrees with his perspective even if just asked as a question.
Grading scale is not okay for the low quality of teaching. He never grades the online homework assignments so you don't know your grade until it's too late to actually get it up. I took it online and will never take one of his classes online again. The quizzes are so hard even when you read the textbook and do the readings. Do not recommend him.
Professor Prew seems like a good guy but I never really enjoyed the class online. His lectures had very little to do with the weekly quizzes so I ended up reading the textbook. He also made us watch 2 hour long films on our own time in order to take the quizzes. It wasn't the worst class but it wasn't great.
I would not recommend taking SOC101 with Prew. It is the last week of classes and still, the majority of the material is not graded. I have no clue where I stand in the class and it makes me upset. His lectures are long and covers a dense amount of material in the semester.
This was a decent class and an easy A. I never really interacted with Paul but he seemed nice. Readings from the online textbook can be really long but everything else is very doable.
Took his class online to take care of a major requirement and regretted every second of that decision. Dude has a wacky grading system that requires you to get a 94 to get an A, which is basically unachievable due to the difficulty of the quizzes that are 50 percent of your grade. He also requires you to purchase his own expensive textbook, 0/10.
Paul is simply the hardest grader I've ever had. Not only that, but his grading scale is ridiculous. His quizzes are hard, and you must go to class. You get points for every little thing you do, so your grade drops if you miss one class. He is a nice guy, and knows what he is talking about- but I would NEVER take this class again unless you need it
I took this class online and it was ridiculous for being a 100 level class. His grading scale is insane and makes no sense. You need a 95 to get an A and anything below a 70 is an automatic F. You also have to purchase his textbook which is ridiculously expensive. There is so much work to be done that you wont have time for your other classes. 0/10
The hardest class I have ever taken on a 100 level. Such a harsh grader, sets you up to fail, not succeed. His tests have nothing to relate to anything that you are taught. So much extra work and does not benefit you at all. I would not recommend this class!
bad, just bad
Don't be too intimidated by the syllabus when you read it. You need a 94 for an A, but you can just Ctrl + F your way through the quizzes. The rest of your grade is earned through work in class. The lecture topics are quite interesting. You talk about racism, corporate greed, government repression, corruption, and how those things affect us today.
Literally horrible,. I've never been in a class in which grading is beyond ridiculous like Prew's. If you get a 13/15 you basically get an F. His quizzes are literally made to make you fail. You literally have to DIG to find his information. I've learned nothing from this class because he makes quizzes so terribly.
Awful professor. Compared to every other online asynchronous class I've taken at MNSU, he is the most hands off professor by far. His grading system is totally arbitrary and he is setting his students up for failure. The course is VERY reading heavy, repetitive, and is littered with personal bias and if you disagree with him it affects your grade
Do not take this online class. The assignments are mostly quizzes which you have a better chance of failing than passing a 13/15 is a fail. He makes you buy the textbook that HE wrote for $190 which on top of my other classes I could not afford this. Every quiz question is opinion based. Taken a lot of online classes this is by far the worst.
Prew's SOC101 class is quite challenging. The grading system is tough, with high thresholds for good grades. However, Unstuck ai can help with efficient study prep. Overall, the lectures cover relevant topics, but the workload is heavy.
way too picky and judgemental on grading tests. and he doesnt know when to switch up stuff once he realizes the entire class is struggling
VERY educated and passionate about the topics covered, which tends to fly over your head if you're not majoring/minoring in urban studies-related content. Be prepared to listen to him talk, a lot. But it is easy to receive a good grade as long as you study the exam reviews. Not difficult, just complex.
This professor knows what he is talking about but can be very long winded and he wrote the required textbook which I am not a fan of. This class was also not what I thought it would be and requires mandatory outside volunteering hours that I was not aware of. He also had a seating chart and mandatory attendance.
Do not take URBS 230W or any course with Paul Prew, although a professor that is clearly passionate about the class, he grades terribly and just talks the whole period about things that pertain virtually nothing to the assignments. Grades super harshly and are required to go on a weekend retreat and volunteer work to complete the course.
I took his class last semester. I would not recommend this professor. His grading is terrible and is not student friendly! This professor has the tendency to go off topic and talk in detail about things not aligning to the course material.
He is very self centered and thinks he is a lot more sophisticated than he really is.
Only take this class if it's required. The professor is nice, but the course is harder than a typical 100-level class. Online students must handwrite all assignments and projects. There are many tasks, group work, and tough grading, so you need a lot of time to earn a good grade.
There is a lot of reading for this course, but the pre-lecture quizzes are graded only on participation. You can usually get away with just skimming. I enjoyed the volunteering and the lectures. The tests were easy and there's a lot of in-class prep for them. Overall, great professor, great class, I recommend taking for an easy gen ed credit.
Almost every class is answering questions about the textbook, there was 1 group project, has assigned seats and mandatory attendance. When you answer a question, he'll go on about it for so long, sometimes not even related to the question. He also said some pretty odd comments about race and how he sat the black students in the back of the room...
ONLINE COURSE, but every assignment was to be handwritten to receive credit. Group homework almost every week. Group final. Didn't even post the study guide for our second exam. Zero grading expectations until 2 weeks into the course. Graded like this course was important. Couldn't handle the university switching his course to online. Waste.
Never take his class , I ignored people comments and I got a bad experience with him , he graded so bad and he will let you fail because volunteer hours which it's not include in his class schedule.
