Takes his class way too seriously. The course consists of 5 short essays, a midterm and final essay, and a group project. The TA's grade ridiculously hard on all assignments and yet provide no feedback. There's no rubric or anything provided either. How do they expect you to improve? Also the movies we watched were atrociously boring.
Paul is a very devout lecturer of cinema and film. Let's get that out of the way. People take this class for the A and honestly think twice about enrolling if you're not serious about critiquing film. If you're a cinema-lover take it! But be warned the essays are a pain for the "Easy A". I missed the final and still scored a B. (Marketing Major)
He is a good lecturer and its easy to make an A. The movies shown are meant to showcase the topic being discussed-NOT to entertain you so be prepared for that. Five 500 word essays, a 1500 word midterm, 1500 word final and a group project. Assigned seating is annoying and so is the group project as you are forced to work with lazy strangers.
knowledgeable guy. But mean and rude person.
5 500 word essays, 1500 word midterm, 1500 word final, group assignment. Movies shown are meant to address the topic, not for you to be entertained. It's an easy class if you're not a bum. He's an intelligent guy, but rather rude human being. Nevertheless, easy class.
This class was the only one I made a 'B' in and it was supposed to be my 'blowoff' class, at least that' what everyone told me. DO NOT take this class if you are just expecting to watch movies. There is one essay per week and they are graded hard, with very little feedback. The professor is smart, but extremely condescending and rude.
DO NOT take this class if you are taking it for a grade booster or because you think it will be easy. Essays graded hard and my TA gave me no help whenever I reached out for help. He knows what he is talking about but is very rude as a person when you go ask for help from him or have questions. Take another class if you need a visual arts credit.
DO NOT take this class as a GPA booster or to balance out hard classes. Not that hard but it requires more work than expected. Professor is rude and the TA's are hard graders and expecting students to be film experts even though it is an INTRO class. Leaving the semester very dissatisfied having taking this course & wish I had taken something else
Class is huge, the reason people say he's rude is because he clearly states to ask the TA before you ask him. You write 5 essays a mid term and a final. He shows some great movies, write about what is on the lecture slides and you should get at least an A-. Really enjoyed the class and despite what everyone else says I think you should take it.
Great teacher! Clearly presents his thoughts , and what is expected in his class... All quizzes are online. You still have 1 midterm (based on the quizzes), 1 group project, and the final exam. Obs: EXTRA CREDIT AVAILABLE in his class.
Don't take this as a GPA booster.
Dr. Reinsch is a good professor to take if you are looking for quality and clarity. He makes sure he explains everything in detail so you can do your best on your assignment. Great office hours for sure! Overall good person to talk to and be around. Be sure to be in class because you can only miss 3 times before you flunk out.
Dr. Reinsch is definitely a very respectable and likeable teacher, that is if you like more strict teachers who will make sure you have your stuff together. He may seem like a jerk at times, but if you talk to him face to face and show that you are interested, he is a very nice gentleman and is more than willing to help you.
I took this class for my fine arts credit and he was okay. It's pretty much just watching movies in class and writing essays on them. Can't miss more than 3 times or you'll fail the class. Huge class with TA's. Assigned seating which I hate. Might be just me but he seems a bit arrogant like he's always right which I don't like. It's an okay class!
This class is not a blow off! Huge class and alphabetical seating which sucked. 5 short essays were easy but the group project can kill your grade. TA's are hard graders.
This is the WORST class I have taken at Texas Tech. A TA grades all of your papers. Do NOT take this class. There is no consistency on the grading. The professor is not willing to help you. No matter how many times you go by to discuss how to improve your grade, they are unavailable to help you.
His class is very clear. Lectures are clear and to the point. His TA are a hit or miss. Some are really nice and grade fairly on essay assignments, while others make you work to make a B. The group project isn't difficult but tedious nonetheless. Gives assign seating so lecture is mandatory.
Don't take this class, take history of rock and roll instead for the same credit. The guy always thinks he is right, he's very stubborn. The TAs graded your paper which I hate and they grade very hard for a class thats suppose to be a blow off. The movies we watched are okay and be ready to write a essay every week.
HORRIBLE CLASS! It all depends on the TA you get and mine was terrible. It's a shot in the dark and just not a good class. Take another visual arts credit. THIS CLASS IS NOT A BLOWOFF. TA'S ARE SUBJECTIVE AND RUDE!
As long as you stay on top of your essays, it's an easy class that doesn't take much time. Dr. Reinsch keeps the lectures interesting so even though it's a 3 hour class, it's not that bad. The TA's do grade the essays hard, so if you're not a strong writer, I wouldn't recommend it! Overall, it's an easy A that doesn't take too much time
Dr. Reinsch gives fun lectures! I have always thought of movies simply as stories written and simply being acted out. His class, though very long, can be very amusing! There are some movies that can be very boring, but I honestly thought that it was interesting to see them and learn about them.
Dr. Reinsch is honestly the worst professor ever. He acts like he is god, but he's nothing but a joke. He is extremely rude, and a pain to deal with. He does not care about the students and is extremely self absorbed. He is no help what so ever on anything. Last he actually takes his class seriously, he's stuck in a high school teacher mind set.
Reinsch is a not helpful, and takes everything so serious. He will put you down, and acts like he's greater than everyone. He takes his class very serious, and doesn't care about any excuses what so ever.
I really enjoyed his lectures. He was a great speaker and really knew what he was talking about. He providing a ton of visual examples as he was speaking with movie clips. As long as you know how to write an essay this class is an easy A
Really enjoyed the class-you get to watch and analyze movies. However, if you dislike essays or group projects, do NOT take this class. You write an essay every single week of class (but on the plus side, class is only once a week, you write an essay and you are done until the following class). Talk to the people you sit around (your future group)
watch a movie once a week and write 400 word essay. I suck at essays and got a 96 in this class. midterm and final are 1200 words essays. TA's grade everything. attendance is taken and if u skip 3 classes ur get a letter grade dropped. one group project which can be done in 1 day, super easy!! u can't leave early either he gets super mad
Class was interesting if you took the time to pay attention. There is a group project, but everyone in the group gets graded on what they did personally.
This is the best theater class I have taken by far. The movies we watched were relevant to the material in the lectures and he kept the information concise and interesting. Essays aren't too long and the instructions are clear cut. He responds to e-mails quickly and is super funny during lectures.
Quite possibly the rudest, most self-absorbed, and inconsiderate professor I've ever encountered. Do not recommend at all.
Such an easy class. The people who complain about him are the morons who leave in the middle of the movies and still cant figure out why they fail. The dude isnt the nicest person in the world but he isnt going to say anything to u unless you deserve it. just sit back, watch the movies, do the small amount of work and get an A.
I heard this class was going to be super easy.. The TA's grade pretty hard. I am normally an A writer, but they gave me B's and don't even tell you what you did wrong on them. There is no rubric. The class is super long and the movies are awful. The things you have to write about is also pretty hard. You only get a couple days to do papers.
You would expect someone in the theater arts department to be easy-going and open minded, but Dr. Reinsch is not one of them. He is the most egotistical professor I've had at Texas Tech. He lectures off an outline, plays a movie, and makes his TA's grade everything (no rubric). I absolutely dreaded this class every week. DO NOT take this class!
TA's grade too harshly w/ pathetic feedback. Assignments, though few, were difficult. I'm a decent writer & struggled to make the minimum word limit every time bc it is difficult to stretch a few vocab terms into 400+ words each week. TO PROF: Please shorten the assignments by half, grade more leniently, or at least provide a detailed rubric.
Dr. Reinsch is a great professor. Cares about his students, gives good lectures, and teaches a fun class. I don't know why everyone's complaining, you have this class once a week, watch a movie, then write a paper that has to be at least 400 words. Easy class, clear what to do on assignments.
I suggest not taking this class. It's a class of 300 students and he has assigned seats AND takes attendance at the beginning and end. I was told this class was just essays and movies, and it is, but it's not easy. Most of the time it's an extremely boring movie then an essay that is 100x more difficult than it should be.
This was supposed to be an easy A but hell no it wasn't! It's a huge class and he assigns seats AND takes attendance both in the beginning and at the end. Even if you leave the class 5 minutes early, he counts it as an absence. The movies he chooses are boring and the essays are unnecessarily difficult. His notes and lecture isn't helpful at all.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. This class was supposed to be easy, but this guy found out how to make it difficult. Do not buy the book. Get ready to write more essays than you wrote in your English classes. Also, get ready to fall asleep during his lectures. This man is boring. Bring a pillow to sit on. The seats are so uncomfortable
He is very funny but expects everyone to show up to class and to stay till the end of class no matter what. The essays are not too hard but not a breeze. The lectures are long and most of the movies are boring and terrible. He is funny and the lectures are entertaining.
I've seen all these posts about how awful Mr. Reinsch is, but his class super chill. He wants respect from you and in turn gives if you follow his rules. I mean all you have to do is show up to class, watch a movie and right a 400 word analysis on said movie. Fun and easy elective class. Don't buy the book you wont need it. Other than that so FUN!!
I really enjoyed his class. He's a thorough teacher & he does a great job at what he does. A lot of people on here say he's 'rude', but he's just a man who wants to be respected. His class wasn't exceptionally difficult, just beware of the group project.
Dr. Reinsch is a great professor. This class can be really fun and easy if you show up and pay attention. He takes attendance before, during and after class. As long as you meet the criteria in your essays and miss no more than three classes you should get a great grade.
Dr. Reinsch was a great lecturer and it was obvious how much and how well he knew cinema himself. His lectures were informative, but not dry and boring. He was funny and straightforward with his material and was able to break down the textbook information in a simpler way for his students.
Class was overall enjoyable. Attendance I'd say is mandatory since the TA's check your assigned seat twice during class. If you're looking for an easy A, I don't think this class is it. The group project is what really screws people over and the grade for that really affects your overall grade. Every week there's an essay due on the movie you watch
He was a great professor!
Great teacher! His lectures are hilarious and what better way to learn about cinema then just watching movies every class. At the beginning essays are given after every class but not hard at all. There is a group project halfway through the semester but once again super straightforward.
Not the best professor. Not very understanding, or helpful. Turn in your essays a day before it's due because if you have computer/ turnitin issues, it's considered your fault. Don't get sick either, because he doesn't accept that as an excuse, even if you have proof.
Super easy! Definitely would recommend this to freshmen for their creative art credit. I say this because we all know English, History, Math etc. so it's fun to come to class and learn something you don't have any previous knowledge about. All you have to do is watch the movies and turn in your essays and it is an extremely easy class!
Mr. Reinsch is very sarcastic. This class is not enjoyable and you're required to write multiple essays throughout the semester. There is also a tedious group project and the midterm and final essays are very long and uninteresting.
Attendance is DEFINITELY mandatory. You have weekly essays, but for the most part they are easy to complete in good time. He is tough, but respected. The class was simple, and even entertaining at times.
Reinach was a good professor who knew the content very well. Class was very long and very boring though. Some of the Das are hard graders on the multiple essays you have to write for the class.
Reinsch is good at teaching cinema, however the classes are fairly boring and dragged. Class is easyish, first 5 weeks suck with a paper due each week. Group project took a little bit but overall was easy just slightly time consuming. The movies you will watch in this class, for the most part, are not entertaining. keep that in mind.
Tips don't buy the textbook, you never use it, don't start your midterm/final essay the day of, and don't miss more than 3 classes. I'm not that great at writing and I managed to average a 90 for all my essays. Just put a little effort into it. it's not that hard of a class.
It's hard to sit through this class for three hours..... Reinsch is funny but he drags out his lectures. Most of the movies you watch are really boring, but the essays are easy if you pay attention. Group project was okay, but annoying to set up.
I did not enjoy this class whatsoever. The class is 3 hours long and most of the movies aren't even interesting. The group project was stressful and worth way too much of your final grade. Reinsch will call you out if you leave in the middle of class or if you're on your phone, but is otherwise okay. The class is fairly easy, but avoid if possible.
I hated this class, most of the movies he chose did not keep your interest. He is not very understanding, and isn't very nice. He grades hard and has little charisma for his students. You will learn a lot about film, but wont have much fun doing it.
This is the worst class i have ever taken, I was told to take it as a relatively easy class coming in as a freshman and it is exactly the opposite. The papers are due every week within 2 days of having the class which generates way too much stress and overtakes my other, more important courses, if you leave early he'll call you out infront of class
He gives lectures that seem to go on forever. He also calls people out if they leave before he's done speaking, which is unnecessary. Papers are due only 2 days after viewing the movie which is very unfair. The class seems endless and will you want to find every excuse to skip it. Overall, it wasn't as smooth of a class as I wished it had been.
I did not enjoy this class, nor did I learn any useful information from it. Dr. Reinsch likes to rudely call out students when their phones accidentally go off or if they stand up to leave the room. Often times he brings up random, unnecessary points revolving around the topic of sex in lectures, which I found quite odd. Relatively easy A though.
Class is aids, take Anthropology at The Movies instead.
Pretty easy class, you're allowed to skip 3 times and there are only 12 class meetings. You watch a movie and write an essay each week. There is no final, but there is one group project.
Lectures are very long. Every time you attend class he lectures for an hour then you watch a movie or film the rest then write a paper over it outside of class. If you watch the movies and pay attention the class is easy and fun. My final was over the movie Indiana Joans! Big classes
This guy is the worst, do not take this class or him. Take any other class besides this one. Hard grader and not a friendly guy, he didn't even excuse me for going to my sisters wedding. I beg you not to take this guy take a different class!!!!
Reinsch is an ok professor. His THA2304 course is extremely long, his lectures are somewhat decent but you feel that you are unsure as to what notes you should take. For 80% of the semester you will watch a movie then write a essay which will be two days later. Other 20% is a midterm essay, final essay, and a group project.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!! He allows 3 absences before being penalized, however his lectures are so boring you may die. The TA's grade everything so your grade depends on them and your writing abilities. He only gives a few days to write the papers over they movie you watch in class. One group project, and a bunch of papers. 6/10 would recommend
If you need to take a fine arts class, this one will be okay if you are good at writing and prepared to sit through an almost three hour lecture. There is a group project which sucks, and TA's grade all your assignments so if that's not okay with you, I wouldn't take this class. Professor Reinsch is good at what he does, though.
1.) Do NOT Buy the textbook as it's a waste of money and you don't use it. 2.) Get ready for long and boring lectures in which you aren't sure about what you want to write down 3.)Most of the movies are odd and make you want to leave. 4.)He is very strict on grading and most of his in-class rules. In the end, this class is not worth it
Classes are long and boring, he and his TA grade super hard for no reason. He is not lenient and will not help you. If looking to take this class for core credit, DON'T. Most likely will not receive an A.
Reading through these reviews makes me laugh. This class is easy, you just have to be willing to write and show up to class. Dr. Reinsch is a funny guy during the lectures and makes it interesting. I learned a bit in this class but wouldn't take again just because it has nothing to do with my major. The TA's were very fair and I never had a problem
The whole class was graded on 8 assignments. 5 short essays, a midterm, group project, and a final essay. Everything you need to write about for essays he talks about in the lecture and you will not want to miss them. Overall, the movies are pretty decent and he is a really caring and good guy. Highly recommend the class for creative arts credit.
TheTA's grade harsh for no reason even if you follow the outline perfectly. The actual professor is horrible. His lectures drag on and on. He is never helpful and if he sees you leave early, sees your phone, or even hears you whisper, he will ridicule you in front of the whole class.
You will have an essay each week based off the film watched in class as well as a group project. So long as you show up and turn in essays you can succeed but get close to your TAs as they are able to determine what grade you get in the end. Overall you can get an A, but this is NOT a blowoff class.
The class is really structured and clear about what you need to do. The first assignments are essays on the movies based on the lecture topic that week. The group project is what tanks your grade though as no one takes it seriously. One guy in my group didn't do his part. However, it is a easy A if you try. Don't skip class until the end, trust me.
This class was super easy. His lectures are about 40 minutes and the rest of the time is spent watching the film. He's strict about attendance, but he provides 3 excused absences. There are short essays about the film and topic every week, but they are short and easy to write, especially if you take notes with his lecture outline.
This class is an easy A if you show up and pay attention. There's a few short lectures at the beginning of the semester, then some easier projects. He's actually really funny if you pay attention. The lectures are kind of long before you watch the film, but they are very helpful when it comes to doing the writing assignments.
This class wasn't horrible, but it definitely wasn't enjoyable. Apart from the not so good range of movies that were shown, the TA's that grade the essays are very hard graders. For students wanting to take his 4 PM class, one important thing to know is that when it's 4-o'clock, he's about to get started.
He is a horrible at his in-class rules even if you have a progressive illness. God complex for sure!
His lecture videos are long and I find it pointless. Pointless because he says nonsense that doesn't really help us on quizzes we get every week. Not to mention, we write essays every week. He's not really a fun and kind professor. I only took this course for creative art credits. He has no room for excuses too, so better turn in work on time.
Extremely tough grader, expects you to know as much as the TAs do by week two. Some concepts are difficult to follow but you must figure them out instantly to pass a paper. In person, you only get one chance to witness the lecture and watch the film, so you HAVE to absorb a huge amount of information and references in a short period of time.
class work is all essay. You write an essay about 500-700 words each week with a midterm and final of 1200-1400 words plus group project. There is also quizzes weekly. TA grades essays. BE CAREFUL FOR SELF PLAGIARISM HE WILL FAIL YOU. Movies are weird and boring. Heavy lecturing.
Professor Reinsch was the worst professor I have ever had. He yells and is just plain rude to his students. He failed me after maintaining an A the entire semester because I submitted my final paper in the wrong format. He does not respect or care for his students. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!
Worst professor I've ever had.
This class wasn't too bad as long as you did the work, the quizzes were very easy. The essays didn't have to be too long but if you are not a good writer or don't like to write do not take this class. The group project isn't bad if you have a good group and they are assigned. The textbook is what got me through his class, I didn't watch his lecture
Busy work busy work and all busy work. Lectures are so long and boring and then you have to write an essay every week. If you like writing essays go ahead and take this.
By far the worst professor/teacher I have ever had in my whole life. Does not care about anyone, and refused to give extra time when a close friend passed away because he did not believe me. He obviously does not have the capacity for empathy and emotion, and enjoys the control he has over students.
Jesus dont take this class RUN. So many essays every week over the most boring movies in the world. The group essay will fail you or pass you. He expects you to know everything cinema related and this class is a joke. DO NOT TAKE IT. I had an A on all my essays and for the group my group was terrible and I got a C and it bumped my grade down terrib
by far the worst professors I have ever had. This class should be very easy, but he has some sorta superiority complex and enjoys the power over his students he has. If you do end up having to take his course, dont think about cheating or getting anything even a sentence off a website. you will receive a zero and student conduct meeting so fast.
Reinsch was the worst professor Ive ever had at Tech! He does not care about his students or their academic success. He knows he has control over our grades and abuses his power. I wouldnt wish for my worst enemy to take his class. If you dont do good on an assignment he suggests you drop out. I would rather watch paint dry than take this class!
Worst professor at Texas Tech! I'm shocked they even allow this guy around students. He has a God-like superiority complex and is too heavy-handed with grading. He will fail you for a simple mistake. I was an A student until taking his class and he accused me of self-plagiarism. It's a non-important intro to cinema class for heaven's sake! RUN!
Paul Reinsch is hands down the worst professor I've ever had. I took this class for an elective, thinking it would be an easier class along with my other tough courses that actually matter. I am shocked he is a professor at Tech and believe he should be fired. He has made it obvious that he DOES NOT want his students to succeed. DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM.
Covered everything besides film (books, memes, etc) although the class was Film Adaptation. I WOULD SAY DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS unless you want to read 3-4 20pages essays every week. You also can't avoid it since he will ask you to cite info from the readings into your finals and midterm.
I took this class online and found it to be a bit time-consuming. I found a lot of the material for my essays through outside resources because his lectures are loooooong and unnecessary. You don't have to buy the textbook (I didn't). There's also a group project (5 page essay) that was horrible to do being all online. I'd find a diff class.
Reinsch has a pretty strange reputation at TTU. Some people love him, but most in his Intro to Cinema course find him to be a poor instructor. His lectures are great and as long as you show up to class and follow the assignments according to the syllabus, getting an A shouldn't be too hard. However, Reinsch can be snippy and it a little harsh.
I took this class online during covid and it was fine. There are a lot of papers you have to write over each of the movies you watch. The lectures weren't terrible and the quizzes were pretty easy. I do wish that more feedback was given on the essays to help us improve. Overall, it's a fine class but I'm glad I'm done with it.
Take it online!!! A bit of a tough grader but you could always turn in assignments a little early. He posts his lectures online and there is not much work to do. Just take it online, way easier.
