High expectations of work effort, but very "doable" as long as you keep up w/readings. Enthusiastic, informative lecturer, fun class.
Very knowledgable, fun guy. Lots of info, but extremely interesting. Wouldn't get into homosexuality though, I tried.
well keeps to certain people in the class, and pays attention to only them.
Hard class, but fairly worth while.
Great prof. Knows his stuff!! Thank you sooo much!!!
really interesting. good class. great prof. i would take another class by him
lots of reading and work but well worth it.
Hard class, lots of reading but interesting. Professor is very helpful and if you show up daily and show him you are trying he will give you a good grade.
I took this class almost two years ago and remember so so much! He was so giving with his time and was incredibly passionate, he should be working at a college like NYU or Harvard, plus he is way hot!
Such a great teacher, he inspired me to go into the field. Would recomend him highly! If you have any even an smidgen of interest,or none at all this is the prof for you!
cool class. learned lots of interesting stuff. hes also just a nice guy i guess. :)
Very intelligent, but goes off track during lectures. Very willing to assist and answer questions
A great professor! It is very clear to see that he has a passion for what he teaches. Inspired me to consider majoring in anthro.
a more dificalt class. I worked my butt off for a B. If you don't test well don't take this class! your entire grade is based on your tests and quizes
His classes can be very difficult, there is a lot of required reading. However, he is extremely knowledged in his field and the reading is astoundingly pertinent to the class. One of my favorite teachers, very understanding, and very dedicated to his field of research.
Great teacher, very knowledgable, would love to take more of his classes.

Amazing and energetic teacher. Not an easy class!
Class was HARD, but he's a wonderful teacher. I will defiantely consider taking another class with him. I both learned and retained knowledge in his class!
Prof. Roach is hands down the best teacher at Century. I feel like I have a great head start as an Anth major due to him. He is incredibly funny and interesting and explains complex subject matter very clearly. Expect to work alot, learn alot and have fun.
Cool guy.
Roach is one of my favorite professors at Century. He makes everything so clear and easy to understand. You have to dedicate a lot of time to studying in his class or you'll do crappy. And for the record he's good looking.
He's really passionate about what he does, which is really good for learning the material. He's fairly laid back. His class is a lot of work, the tests are pretty hard. He looks like Mark Ruffalo (aka easy on the eyes!)
Great teacher but, you have to work at him to get it. Takes awhile to get used to his teaching style, and his testing style. Test are monumentaly hard, you need to really study to get even a passing grade in his classes, but I think that is what he is going for.
Paul Roach's class is harder than **** i am a genius however i earn D's on his tests i work my butt off and Paul Roach should hit somebody's noun for serious though it tough but some people think they're going to fail tests, and then get them back and get ****ing A's on them! that makes me mad i wish the girls that sit in front would stop flirting.
i really found him interesting. no notes, just lecture and ALOT of reading. great teacher, hard class
Proffesor roach is awesome. I really enjoyed this class and he taught it with much clarity. However, the people in the back need to shut the **** up when he's talking. They are extremly distracting and are acting like children instead of adults. It's no wonder why they are attending Century and not an actual universaty
He is a great teacher, very funny, and helpful. This is very hard class, which i am struggling to pass. The tests are incredibly difficult, but i have found him to be more then willing to sit down and talk over what troubles your having and what can be done to improve. He even helped me with my next semester course selection. Hes very cool.
Very good teacher. The class is very challenging, you really need to put in a lot of effort to recieve an A.
If you do not do well in this class, it is your own fault. He is so smart and so eager to help that anyone who wants to learn will get a good grade. Best class I ever took.
Very good instructor. Really knows his stuff. I found class pretty easy, all I had to do was study the lecture notes and read the book. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it. BUT, you really need to have very good reading skills.
You will do well in this class if you listen, and ask questions, and study study study! he's very interesting, and took a subject i knew nothing about and made it be on my mind a lot! (why do we do this? how did this evolve?)
Kind of hard but he wants to see you succeed so if he's hard on you don't take it personally! Just doing his job but sometimes he can be a little cruel but after all it is college and he's not going to just let you slide.
Grades tough but fair always on a curve. Lot of reading, but is easy to understand. Will help with any subjuct not just anth. Open to any duscussion and is rather interesting. Good teacher. You'll learn lots!
Great class with a great teacher. He wants everyone to do well...and will help, but you have to ask or he doesnt know you need it! Also, very willing to help with anything college related...just ask. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed in everything they do academically. Take one of his classes!
This class was extremely interesting, and extremely difficult. I have never learned so much from one class. The interesting thing is that you don't forget what you learn either! Still this class requires a lot of reading... and the tests are VERY HARD!!!
Came to class everyday without any material. I didn't know what to think of it at first, but after a while I liked it a lot. He is nearly flawless in his knowledge. I got a C, but I didn't read the text at all. I was interested and had vague background info on this class to prior, but if this is not you're subject you might not due well.
Very interesting teacher, makes the lectures fun, tests do require reading and studying,i studied about an hour before each test and got an A.If you are up for a small challenge take this class. Its not the traditional anth class, lots of evolution involved..very cool. :) AWESOME TEACHER!!
Grading is based on 5 tests. These tests are UNREAL. On Monday, for example, he tested us on a very difficult concept chapter that he didn't even dicuss in lecture. Do NOT take this class. I have been a straight A student up until this point in college. I would not suggest taking him.
Dr. Roach is an amazing prof he does a great job of explaining and offering help if you just cant wrap your mind around it. I loved this class! He however has high expectations of his students. His exams are difficult and very challenging however he does a great job of preparing you for a transfer! Be prepared to STUDY and read!
His lectures were engaging and something to look forward to. It wasn't a 'slide by' class by any means. If you're willing to put in the work, it's very rewarding and he's willing to help you grasp the material.
His lectures are ok but based on his rather discorded train of thought which can be difficult to follow.Tremendous amount of reading from several books followed by extremely difficult exams.Top score out of a class of 50+ students is 49 out of 60.grades on a curve thank goodness.
Paul is great and has a real passion for Anthropology. He is approachable to students. He seems like a 'real person', a high school drop out, got his GED, went to Community College and ended up with a PhD. The only negative thing I can say is he tends to be a little scatterbrained at times.
Roach is very helpful, use his office hours. His class is extremely hard, lots of reading. You must doing your reading and attend class to pass, grades are curved, he will work with you on your grade, he tends to make deals on your grade. Very nice, just must ask if you dont understand.
His class was hard, and some of the stuff was a little boring, but overall it was very enjoyable. This guy knows what he is talking about, and you can tell he has a real passion for his subject.
Great professor, with a ton of real world knowledge about anthropology.
I took Roach's courses years ago, he is an excellent professor. He is not trying to trick you. The tests are not hard if you do the work. To the person who is complaining about having to read a ton, welcome to college. Also 49/60 is 81.7%, which is not bad. At the U of M, intro anthropology exam scores average around 60-65% and they also curve.
Great professor! I transferred to a private liberal arts college and have not yet had a professor as interesting or caring. It is important to stay caught up on your reading, but if you do your work and show interest, you'll get a good grade! A MUST TAKE PROF AT CENTURY!!
This teacher is amazing! He is very intelligent, and you can tell he is passionate about his subject and loves teaching. I absolutely loved his class. It is a harder class, reading is required, but I would recommend taking it! If you want a teacher that will inspire you to learn, take him!
He's a cool guy who talks very enthusiastically about the subject of anthropology. The class probably would be half as fun without him teaching it!
This class was extremely hard for me. I didnt understand the text and he did not make it any easier, his test are hard so unless you have taken anthro before i dont suggest him. Nice guy, eunthusatic, hard class.
Paul is one of the best professors ever. What a great guy who is truly an expert in his field. What the heck is he doing at Century College?
I had Dr. Roach for his human nature course. It was a great course. It wasn't easy but if you do your reading, take notes, and attend class you will succeed. He is a great professor, I had very little interest in anthropology prior to the class and now have a great interest in it.
He's actually a very fair but hard teacher. Very opinionated to say the least but in a good way. Recommended if you want a challenge!
Great teacher. Passionate about the subject. Smart, and helpful. Knows a lot of interesting information. Just an over all great teacher.
Great teacher! Smart, and helpful. Passionate about subject. Has experience in the subject, which is so rare for teachers now a days. Knows lots of information. Just an over all great teacher.
great teacher very good
He's really great. Strong opinions but very open-minded. He knows a lot and cares more than most teachers.
To the previous poster, you don't have to be a complete snoot about it. Some people just don't have the best reading comprehension skills, are extremely busy, and/or Mr. Roach's intelligence is probably higher than most. All those components can add up to an extremely difficult class for some. On that note, he's a superb teacher:
I took his online cultural anthropology class. From what I can tell, he's very knowledgeable, opinionated, and passionate about anthropology. In my experience, the class was easy but there was just a lot of work to complete. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him; he sounds like an outstanding professor AND individual.
Paul's good stuff. Smart guy. The online class had a heavy workload but was manageable. Assignments are all essays. Tests are long but not overly difficult.
Make sure you get the right EDITIOn of this book. It's a lot of reading and the quizzes will really test your memory so read carefully and more than once. His final is also cumulative.
Paul Roach is my favorite professor I've had in college. I went into his class not knowing anything about anthropology, but left wanting to learn more. The class is not terribly difficult if you go to class and do the readings, and he is always willing to help students. The best thing about him is he knows his stuff and enjoys what he is teaching.
He will definitely spark your interest in Anthropology if you didn't already have one. Interesting lectures. You will definitely need to read the text book, take notes on what you read and pay attention to details. The quizes and tests are difficult if you don't. A very fair professor with lots of obvious knowledge.
I would suggest taking at least ONE of his classes. He carries a lot of knowledge regarding the field of anthropology. His tests are difficult BUT they are fair and getting a good grade is very obtainable. His tests take some getting used to but if you study well enough, you WILL get a C or higher. Overall, he is a fantastic professor! Good luck.
Paul knows his material and is excited to teach everyday. He makes it the students responsibility for attendance and assignments. He promotes class discussion as well. If you fail his class, you should have withdrew
Dr. Roach! is awesome. He shows up every day ready and excited to teach and it shows in his classes. His tests can e difficult because there is zero fluff in them, but if you pay attention/study they are easy. He's very clear about what you'll be tested on. Had him multiple classes and would do again in a heartbeat.
I began with little to no interest. After several of Dr. Roach's lectures, I was fascinated by everything. He is very knowledgeable, passionate, and considerate. His exams are fair and clear. He gave us a pop quiz often to check attendance. It's important that you complete your readings, take notes, and take detailed lecture notes. Good luck!
Great teacher! Roach is very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. He talks to the class with a peer on peer attitude. Challenging course but well worth the effort.
Great Prof. Very knowledgable, but kind of scattered during lecture. Intensive reading required. We got our exam grades back in the next class every time, except the one we had the same day Portal 2 came out, but that's understandable. I recommend this class.
Very smart, outgoing, clear, and easy-going professor. As for the class, there are lots of readings and quizzes. Expect to read a lot and your grade will mostly be based upon quizzes and tests. The class is not hard if you read assigned homework and actively listen to his lectures. Overall, was a good class and experience.
The smartest professor ever! Knows what he is talking about and is very intelligent. Very good professor overall!
he is good instructor but has hard tests depending on how you learn! test consists of reading material on your own and lector notes from class! assignments are pretty easy!
Bragged the 1st day of class that he'd only given out four "A"s in 10 yrs of teaching. He also attempted to use D2L for the 1st time this fall but opened it only 1 hour at a time in middle of the school day. Couldn't get work in w/out skipping other class. He gave me zeros for all 3 "late" assignments, then told me to drop his class to avoid the F.
To clarify, he has previously used D2l in an online class this last summer. Good class and a good teacher. About his bragging about only giving 4 "A"'s in his 10 years I find very unlikely. I received an "A" and do not feel exclusive to three others. Paul is worth taking if you like Anthropology.
One of the best teachers I've had. As long as you attended class everyday, read and understand the material you'll do good. Tests have a heavy weight on short answers. I got an A in the class.
I have taken a couple of Paul's classes. He is not the easiest professor but definitely knows his stuff and is a really good professor. The tests are hard and a combination of the text and in class notes. Great note taking and self study for his classes are a must. I would definitely recommend his classes to anyone willing to try.
Paul is an excellent professor. His classes are difficult but he really wants his students to succeed. Good note taking ability and study habits are a must. Tests are difficult but manageable. I would recommend his classes to anyone that has a desire to be challenged and wants to learn.
Brags too much about himself. Briefly explains chapters. Thinks his teachings are for 4-year colleges instead of the 2 year college that he works at! He even told the girl next to me that "I think you're not going to pass class" due to failing just 1 exam. Has NO HOPE FOR STUDENTS!
He cares about his students, he just expects you to work hard. He's a college professor after all. He is very well spoken and passionate about his field. Do not miss lecture. You must be willing to work hard. I've never been so impressed by a professor and I always look forward to his class. He is a TRUE educator and deserving of your respect.
looks like "Bill Rancic". Makes this class AMAZING. I actually look forward going to his classes and his lectures were very interesting. Laid back and helpful guy. Besides all the fun stuff, professor Roach requires a lot of readings and homework questions, like 5-10 questions 50-250 words each. Hard work! His tests are hard! 7+ hrs. p/ week
He often doesn't know where he havew to start the lectur. He missed the quiz because he forget to bring the test. He promised to post example vocab but he forget. Nomarly, he doesn't come into the class on time.
Have him now for Human Nature. If you pay attention to lecture, take notes on what he puts on the board and keep up with reading you should have no problem getting a great grade. He is excited about stuff he is teaching b/c it applies to real life. Very interesting class, not hard. I recommend him and have him again in the fall.
States right off the bat that he is a tenured teacher and proceeds accordingly. Never take an online class with this prof - EVER. I've heard he's alright in class but hates technology and shows it! This is a 1000's level class and the work reflects that of 4000's level classes I have taken. Useless!
Sometimes he's late and he forgets stuff- but overall his classes are extremely interesting and he makes the concepts easy to understand. He knows his material REALLY well and his passion really shines through. There's a bit of reading in his class, but no writing. My class was on-campus, and those are much more enjoyable than his online ones.
This is my second year of community college, and I was not prepared for this class. Paul is a very enthusiastic teacher, but he expects a lot from his students. If you're interested in evolutionary science/history or you've taken a university level class, you'll do fine. In short, make sure you are prepared for this class.
Took him for cultural and physical anthro. LOVED his classes.
Took online. We had to teach ourselves. We read 3 chapters at a time, do an assignment with manditory word counts for each question. Then we take a test on each set of 3 chapters. Thats it. No contact from professor. We teach ourselves!!!
His classes are not hard if you do what you should do. I've taken two classes with Paul and I'm taking a third now. He is BRILLIANT and I wish I could study with him for the rest of my school years. I'm not even sure he is human. A god among men, rather.
This is my second course with Dr. Roach. Compared to ANTH2061, Cultural Anthropology is easier on the readings with a lot less biology. Four exams and ten pop quizzes, which you can drop one from each. Attend class, take DETAILED lecture notes, do your readings. Compared to other Century classes, his courses I believe are adequately challenging.
I really enjoyed the course material, however, he often forgot where he left off with lecture material, and would waste most of class talking about one thing when he wanted to talk about multiple subjects. Or he would spend half the class on some random subject not related to the class. He has high expectations wih course work, tests are challenging
Very hard class! Must attend every class or you WILL miss something. His lectures do not pertain to the readings at all the lectures are completely separate and he does test on them. Pay attention in class! He is really nice and extremely knowledgeable.
Doesn't seem to realize that students learn differently. If you're bad at reading, you'll probably fail because he doesn't give any other homework like worksheets to help you learn. When asking for help the only answer I got was "study harder" and that he doesn't give extra credit. Would make a good anthropologist, but not a good teacher.
This man is very smart and knows his stuff. He only does only teaching style, and it is the style that puts all the work on the students. The work is hard, but not impossible. He is a great teacher and will help you any way he can, do not take this class if you do not plan on showing up for class or doing the (hard) work.
I took the fast track class. There is a lot reading condensed in a short time, so be aware of this when signing up for the class. The assignments are straight forward, and the essays can be a challenge. Be prepared to start on day one of the class being posted. Make sure you have your books before the class starts or you are screwed.
Very interesting and intellectually stimulation course. Be prepared to read and take notes on those readings constantly, but it's really still pretty manageable. Enthusiastic teacher. Lectures are important, although attendance wasn't mandatory. Test based class. Class changes your view of the world!
I took his online Anthropology course. The essay questions at the end of every week and reading material needed for each week were difficult to make, but I took a quick online summer course. Overall the class was extremely interest, engaging (even online!) and he was helpful with feedback and was open to questions&concerns. Great teacher!
For 1 Exam you need to know the material on 3 to 4 chapter in one book, 3 chapter in another, plus lectures and videos. There is no starting point of help on what to review, but to know it ALL and read it ALL! If you have never taking an Anthropology class before I would not recommend you start in his class. Class lectures are more interesting.
Enjoyed my experience in this course. Paul is an amazing man to learn from. First impression is that he is very similar to Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park. I suggest this course to many.
Great Professor!
I really have enjoyed Dr. Roach's Anthropology class. Although I didn't need it directly for my major, I took it to fulfill one of the 'goal' areas at Century. He is incredibly intelligent and passionate about his subject and the lectures are super interesting. I am even considering taking another class from him because it was so good!
Worst class I've ever taken in college! He has you read certain chapters in the textbook and exams in 2 weeks. No study guide or worksheets to help; pretty much, you have to read everything and have to know everything because you can't guarantee what'll be on the exam. His lectures are on the exams also, so DON'T miss class!
Excellent professor, I recommend you take Bio first, as a lot of that material is on the first test. The class is really like a mix of Bio and Anth. It was easy for me but I think it is because I already took Bio, I anticipate most will have to but in a bit more work if they have not taken bio. Test are mult choice and short ans. tests are curved
My class was online, but it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. The assigned papers can be difficult, but my grades on those had always been very high even when I thought I had failed for sure. The only thing I found difficult were the exams. No lectures or homework except a weekly quiz game, though. Overall an easy-ish class.
Do not take this online class. He gives no helpful material to study for the test which is super hard. The assignment which he claims will help you prepare for the test seems pointless because barely anything shows up when you take the quiz. He forgot that most of the students taking his class are not pursuing to become an anthropologist. POOR!!!
Very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. Do show up for his classes because there will be things on the test that are not in the book, only in his lectures. He gave me a real interest for anthropology and because of him i want to take more antrho classes
The class was great, but the EXAMS were TERRIBLE. The wording on the exams were obnoxious and confusing. The time-limit for the exam is also pain-staking. There are no study guides, the homework and book are useless to study for the exam. If he fixes the exam, the course would be awesome! For a 3 credit course, this should be a 5 credit instead.
I regret taken this course. The assignments and readings were wonderful! The tests on the other hand was excruciating. There are no study guides that prepare you for the test. I wish he would change his testing procedure. The test had a time limit, but there wasn't enough time to finish the test.
Do not take this course if you are looking to fill in requirements for 3 credits. This course is intended only for anthropology majors. I've looked over the assignments and readings many times, only to find that they were useless during the exams.
Most demanding 3 credit course I've ever taken. Put in at least 4x credit hours to get good grade. Test questions are deeply application based, knowledge of terms are not good enough. Lectures don't clarify subject, they add to what you must know and are heavily tested on. Take lecture notes!!! No clarification given to what's important to study!!!
Prof. Roach established a high standard for work in the class. You need to have a working understanding of the text as well as lecture notes. You won't be spoon-fed. Schedule the time you need to review the material and come to lecture. There we many people in class that I only saw on test day, and they struggled. Best class I've had at Century
I took this an accelerated, late start class. This was very time consuming, but not overly difficult. He likes to use the lockdown browser, take good notes and have another device handy. A little heavy on homework.
Almost finished with this online class and I would say it went well. Definitely difficult, typical for a college course though. Online class consists of 5 five papers (multiple question essay). Tests are deep thinking, just make sure to take thorough notes. You really need to comprehend material not just read the textbook.
First online class I've ever taken & I wouldn't mind taking more online courses. Professor Roach's course isn't too bad, you have to do the assignments in order to pass his class. Each week there's 1 chapters to read in an ebook then a quiz afterwards & every 3 weeks there essays (250 words) due and a test. Just do your work & you'll pass.
Make sure you don't miss class because his tests are based on his lectures too. Lots of reading but hey, you're in college. Very knowledgeable. Tests are mostly multiple choice and some written. Computer quiz counts some. This was a 2hr long class.
Fast paced 5 week summer online Cultural Anthropology class. It was intense. I spent most my days reading the content online and reading the ethnography. In the online course, there were 12 chapters in the online text, the whole ethnography on the Yanomamo and a written assignment each week. Each week there were 4-5 250 word essays due.
Paul is an absolute gem, very nice guy and I learned a lot from his class
Took the accelerated online class. A lot of material to read but it was a pretty interesting course.
I absolutely despise this guy. He teaches an introductory anthropology class as if we are in an upper level one. There's no material online to help you study, he doesn't let you keep tests to study from. He is awful. Forsure the most terrible class I've ever taken. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Most horrible professor in the existence of professors. Please do yourself a favor and don't take any of his classes. It's a class at a community college but he wants to act as if we're at a university. He rambles so much when he teaches and gets off topic. I would give him a negative 10 stars if I could.
Really great guy. Ridiculously hard class. That pretty much sums it up.
Incredibly experienced and knowledgeable in his field. Class was interesting because of the depth he could pull from personal experience.
I was a biomedical science major at a 4-year university and this was one of the hardest classes I have taken. Tests are ridiculously hard. Assignments are fairly easy as long as you meet the word count. I tried reaching out for help and he never responded to my emails.
Paul is funny and incredibly knowledgeable, the subject is a lot of info to wrap your brain around, but that's not his fault. Lecture attendance and taking notes is a necessity to pass the exams. Also reading and re-reading the text book chapters.
The professor seems nice, but his 3 credit class feels like its 5 credit. All in just one week, the quizzes is something you see in midterm or final. He gives short time on the amount of questions give, he also make you do essays that are about 6-7 page long. The book online itself makes you answer about 50 questions on top
Hes a great professor because hes really into the subject and very knowledgeable and keeps up-to-date on all the changes which isnt easy, and he is absolutely positively not an easy grader, you earn your A if you are willing, and able!!
Expected 5 page essay each week along with difficult quizzes that didn't cover the actual material in the book. Wasn't very understanding of the fact that people tend to take more than one class a semester. Over half dropped in first week. Don't take any of their classes.
I've not studied with Dr. Roach in a while but I'm shocked by some reviews. He set me on my career path. He is the most passionate and knowledgeable professor I've had (and I moved to a major university after Century.) His lectures are gold. He gives 100% and expects the same. Apply yourself with a good attitude and you'll get so much back.
This class was great. Despite long lectures, I really enjoyed the material. There is just a lot to cover so the studying becomes overwhelming! But as long as you don't skip class and miss lectures, you'll be golden! Take lots of notes too, and even voice record lectures, that helped me a lot.
I have taken two courses with Dr. Roach the prior semester (at the same time). His courses are that of good academic rigor, and are taught at a level which one would find at a private four year university at triple the cost. If you want to take a course which examines people from a holistic, empirical, and comparative approach, look no further.
Good professor. You need to be able to handle the class yourself. Not easy to exploit tests, but someone smart will be able to. If you even have a slight enjoyment of Anthrop, you will find enjoyment in the course. Weekly notes are required, but if you put an ounce of effort in you will be fine.
19 credits, 30 hrs work weeks. If I was able to get an A in Dr Roachs class and all the others then anyone can do it. Put the work on! Not sure why other reviews complain about the amount of work and guidance. This is college, not middle school. I am happy that Dr Roach teaches at a high level instead of community college level
A good professor but sometimes would get off topic. the quizzes and exam are hard, it's college level so if you can't do college level or if its too hard for you then I wouldn't recommend to take the class. he doesn't reply to emails if its not office hours. only take the class if its the only options or if your major is anthropologists. good luck.
A really nice and laid back person who is genuinely into anthropology although his class is hard. He expects you to already know everything, he doesn't do presentations, rather writes unorganizedly on the white board and pretty much felt like I was in the wrong class. No study guides and tests are based solely on things he talks about in lecture.
Paul is a great guy. Super funny, nice, and helpful. He teaches this class at a high level with a good amount of work, but if you pay attention in class and keep up with weekly work, you will do fine. All tests in class are on LECTURE NOTES ONLY. The online textbook stuff you do not need to study except for the weekly quizzes. Quizzes are hard.
Paul made Anthropology a fun course to take. Definitely recommend for all students. Too much essays and papers though
Paul was an excellent professor. I took this class and ANTH1023 (online) simultaneously, which was challenging because of the heavy reading, but I enjoyed both. While attendance is not mandatory, you won't pass the class if you don't attend each lecture. Tests are just on lecture material (anything he says is fair game) and doesn't use slides.
I had a horrible experience in this online summer class. My biggest issue is that the ONLY source material was the textbook. I quite literally taught myself. The instructor provided no lectures, study guides, or ANY supplemental text whatsoever, and he made no attempts to engage with us. I was extremely disappointed I spent money on this class.
I had such a hard time in his class, there was absolutely no guideline for the exams so going into them anything could've been on the test. I felt like I never knew what we were clearly being tested on. He is very knowledgable but it seems as though he expects more from students while giving no context.
he gave me a 2% on an essay, isnt that enough of a saying of what kind of grader he is? only thing you get is a book, learn that content yourself you goofy goober(i cant swear). that darn book doesnt even provide enough to make an essay worth anything over 3%. good luck making the word count. if i had roach in my name id fail students too. hes rude
regardless if you are pursuing something directly related to anthropology, the course information is vital - meeting and hearing from Paul Roach has been one of my favorite opportunities thus far in my college career. This professor not only cares very much about the field in which they specialize, but they express care for the whole student.
The course is challenging, but if you stay engaged and utilize resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook, you can thrive. Lectures are essential - take detailed notes and consider recording them. With effort, this class can be very rewarding.
Online class, no lectures or mandatory attendance. Super clear grading criteria, one assignment and quiz a week and one assignment every 2 weeks. Textbook is online. Grades things almost right away and gives good feedback. Available by email and office hours. One of the easiest classes to get a good grade in as long as you do your work.
His D2L is well unagonized which made his assignments were well explanatory. All you had to do was read and watch 3 mini videos (1 min long) and then take 2 quizzes. The quiz is 12-25 questions. Pay attention in his class because he will have 3 in class quiz about his lectures. He is a very nice, understandable, and approachable.
I had Professor Roach for a 2 hour and 45 minute night class, and most of the time in class was lectures, not ideal. However, the lectures were fairly interesting most of the time. There is alot of reading, and the reading quizzes are VERY difficult. The in-person exams aren't so bad, as long as you pay attention to the lectures.
I graduated 10 years ago from Century, dozens of professors, Paul Roach was by far my favorite. If you have any interest in human origins, his course will change your life. Fair and VERY interesting lectures.
Professor Paul Roach was a great professor. Just do your work on time and you'll be fine. He always gives you good and wise feedback and his class was not hard at all. He continues to be one of my favorite professors! I recommend him if you want a pretty chill but effective class.
The most uninspiring, unengaging class I've ever taken. It's all textbook no teaching. There are quizzes and short written assignments but I've never met a professor with such a fitting last name. He's not a teacher. He's a sticker, with a pension for giving the most bland assignments possible. Not a single video lecture in sight. No passion.
I had Professor Roach for an introduction to cultural anthropology class in the spring of '25, and I gotta say, he is one enthusiastic fellow. It wasn't an easy class material-wise, but he teaches it in a digestible way, and the online work is structured very well. If you're interested in the subject, I'd say this class is a no-brainer.
Best professor I've had. Extremely passionate about what he teaches, and gave the best overview of information relevant to the course that he could have. I took the class for a goal area, wouldn't have taken it otherwise, and it has been invaluable to learn about. Incredible guy, highly recommend his classes.
The class is moderately, I learned a lot of interesting things. However, I wish Paul could upload lectures for his online students instead of us just depending on our textbook. As long as you do your work then it's easy breezing, the quizzes are a bit difficult though, make sure to study for them.
