Very tough teacher with very tough tests. He goes off topic quite frequently and is not clear about what is on his tests. He will change the answer the book gives you without telling you on the test...however, he wants student success
Teacher is extremely difficult. He lectures more about current events then he discusses what is going to be on the tests. Goes off topic a lot, and his tests are long, tedious and nearly impossible.
Always gets off topic, and makes studying for tests nearly impossible. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Very off topic teacher. To passionate about current events to carry on a lecture about anything else. Drop the class if you have to have him. It's seriously a waste of your money. Taken 2 of his classes, both were the same way. He now teaches internet classes. ...Just don't.
daily show clips are a plus. current events are important in any pol sci class. and we do go over the metarial just not spoon fed. wimps!
Great guy. Passionate. But, very, very, off topic. You're going to learn the material on your own, but he'll provide some great sources. Some good classroom exchanges on current events but they get way too far off topic and consume too much time. Dont take him if you are not motivated to study on your own. If you need lectures to learn, skip Roesle

Had him for the first online class. It was so hard. I know American Government, I work with it everyday, but still managed to fail the class! Quizes are impossible to understand, study guide was no help, nothing really was. He might be different in a real class though.
Roesler is difficult. Quizes were not too hard, as long as you read the chapter it covered. Midterm was tough which I got a 67%. Quizes are timed, which is frustrating since my computer is so slow. Didn't think I would make it through all the questions to mark an answer. Study guides stink, better to just re-read the book. Offers help, didn't take.
His tests and projects were impossible. I don't know how he expects students in a 101 level class to understand the concepts at the same depth that he does. I tried my hardest and failed the class. but I took the class over with another teacher and got an A. My complaints are the same as everyone else who has commented.
Great teacher, fascinating class, dynamic discussions. Want an A??? Use FLASHCARDS to memorize the terms
I like his class, at times i do believe he expects to much for a 101 class. I have found taping his lectures and listening to them on my way home from school to more helpful and easier than trying to take notes in his class. Midterm was overwhelming!
He's a nice guy and the class was pretty easy, he's just really off topic and the outlines he puts on powerpoint are pointless, the book is the key to an A. Oh and he only really has like, 4 assignments over the whole semester and they're super easy.
Great Professor IF you WANT to learn. If you are just there because it is a requirement you are missing out. Really wants students to understand the material. Very well organized, opinionated but fair and respectful!
Prof. Roesler opened my eyes up to the Patriot Act, but that's really the only thing I can say that he taught me. He's far too liberal for my liking, and he shows far too many Colbert Report and Daily Show clips. He tends to go off topic a lot. The key to passing the tests is www.wwnorton.com/wtp5e
I didn't appreciate the fact that his lectures didn't correspond to his quizzes or the quiz schedule. The only thing I liked about the class was his liberal bias and frequent use of Colbert and Daily Show clips.
Good prof, but READ the BOOK!!
I honestly have no idea why he has job as a professor, let alone the head of the department. Incredibly biased, and utterly intolerant of opposing views. This class should have been called "The ultra crybaby liberal views of Paul Roesler 101" instead. Could not stay on topic if a gun was put to his head. Only a masochist would enjoy his class.
Don't understand why people r complaining that Roesler doesn't go over the book enough and spends too much time on current events. We're all grownups here and need to actually do our homework. He's really interesting. I'm conservative & he respects my opinions even though he's liberal. He's willing help out everyone outside class. Nice guy, too.
I'm a moderate so I don't appreciate anyone pushing their views on me. I'm glad he tells you up front how he feels and that he has a bias. Good teacher and very smart.
I had Roesler for 3 classes. I'm about to graduate from a top 10 poli sci school. I learned just as much if not more in his classes than any at my current school. He's an incredible professor. His class isn't the easiest, but you'll actually learn something if you show up and do the work.
Smart guy. Learned a whole lot!
Awesome professor. Definately has a liberal bias, but he is an excellent teacher. I passed all the tests with an A. Listen to his lectures, take notes, and you'll be fine.
I took the online class, it was the hardest class i have ever taken, the professor doesnt help much and he expects you to be able to take a 10 question with short answer quiz in like 15 minutes. it might be enough time for some but not for me. i feel like i worked really hard to pass the class but the grades im given dont reflect my time and effort
Roesler was awesome, but required you to read the text. He's VERY fair -- I don't know why others didn't get good grades, but it's not because he didn't agree with you. READ THE BOOK and take the practice quizzes!!!
I have taken this class online. Professor Roesler is a great teacher & the course was very refreshing. He provided narrated powerpoint slides, related articles, videos etc. Class required hard work, but if you read the book, take practice quizzes, go over the study guide, which will improve your critical thinking skills, you can get a good grade.
I took his course online and found it to be one of the hardest I have taken. He doesn't return quiz grades or homework in a timely manner. The videos he claim are for fun were on the test and obviously had a slant for his political preference. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Very hard teacher. Often unorganized. Doesn't give enough time on tests and quizzes. Be prepared to read the book on your own often as things not discussed in class WILL show up on tests.
I took the 101 class over the summer. The course is pretty well laid out and the potential to get a good grade is there. I received an A but I DEFINITELY had to work for it. A ton of reading involved, especially in an 8 week period. Do the work, reading and practice quizes and it's not bad, just very time consuming.
I loved Roeslers class. I had him for IR and Middle East Politics, yeah he can be a hard teacher but he keeps you on yours toes. All it takes is some effort and anyone could do great in the class. Defiantly one of the best teachers I have ever head.
I took the online version of POL 101. It was one of the most difficult classes I have taken. Material that was "optional" turned out to be essay questions on the midterm exam, resulting in my low grade. Also, he extends due dates upon request. Sometimes good, however I found it difficult to keep up with the constant changes. Nice guy, hard class!
He used only daily show clips as his primary sources of information. He arbitrarily changed the due dates for assignments sometimes a day before it is due. Overall an ineffective teacher who does not use credible backing for class material.
Took online. Did well but challenging. LOTS of reading. Quizzes are tricky & written so that only those with legit knowledge of topic will do well --short time limits on quizzes. 4-5 papers due throughout semester. Must cite court cases/decisions/reasons,etc. Answer 2 Q's online, like 2 short papers. Xtra credit available but for little pts.
Took his online class and loved it! You only have one assignment each week and it takes a few hours to complete. Lots of textbook reading, but his quizzes are easy. Just follow the study guide and watch the minilectures. He uses a lot of entertaining clips to help students better understand complex political ideas. Really great class and teacher!
Worst organization of an online class I have ever seen. If this class was easy I wouldn't have know because it takes more time and stress to locate where everything is at. Gives optional assignments and questions, but then puts them on quizzes and test. This was by far the worst attempt of an online class I have ever seen.
Quiz's and tests don't relate to his lectures at all. Gets very off topic every class overall around 40 minutes each 2hour and 50 minute class. Makes it very difficult to understand the book and his questions on his tests and quizzes wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Waste of my money for the class and the book that he doesn't relate the class too.
Yes his class is tough if you don't put in the work. He gives extra credit and it helps. He is super nice and helpful if you need help. He goes above and beyond. Another awesome teacher at SCC.
Great teacher! If you participate and do the work, you will do well in his class. He is very helpful if you need it. Some on here have said he is super liberal. He is liberal but tells you his bias and presents everything in a fair balanced manner. He respects everyones opinions.
Awesome teacher. Yes tough, but if you study and read the textbook you will do well. He also offers extra credit which is very helpful. I highly recommend him, especially if youre looking for a teacher that is well educated on this topic.
Horrible online course....not passable because the tests do not relate to what you are taught. VERY frustrating! And he was useless when asked for help.
Roesler is not easy. You have to pay attention and read the book. He is VERY helpful. I struggled at first but we met weekly and I brought my grade up to a B. He gives a lot of extra credit. Be sure to complete his study guides--they are key to doing well.
Had him for International Relations and passed the class with an A. That says a lot because prior to taking this class I knew nothing about Political Science, not my forte. Lots of quizzes, but read the textbook and anyone can pass the class!
This professor is very unorganized, it was hard to know what information you need and what information is pointless. Be prepared to teach yourself and recieve comments on each quiz about how poor you are doing.
a lot of work online but the test is online as well.
Don't expect to show up and pass! you will need to work for it but trust me it is worth it! you learn so much and by that I mean learn real world, everyday, I wish I would have known type stuff. If you are looking to pass school by taking the easy classes and be mediocre then do so but if you are up for some real inspirational learning he's the 1
This class was very informative. I have a hard time with history/government classes so I knew this class would take a lot of hard work. However, this class was much harder than I expected. I would study, read, and do the assignments but fail the quizzes. What was on the study guides and in the power points did not always match info on the quizzes.
His class is actually about 70% online. If you don't check canvas every day and put aside time outside of class you will fail. You do not need to buy the book, there will not be any work out of it that won't be explained in class. You will have about 14 quizzes online as well as several small essays.
I really love Paul as a person- he's goofy and open minded and kind, and his lectures are interesting. However, he is SO unorganized and scatterbrained and messes up all the time with canvas. You can't just pay attention in class and expect to do well. It's basically an online course with fun lectures on the side. Do canvas coursework!! Lots of EC
hardest course I'veever taken and I'm only two classes shy of my associates. changes dates constantly - grades harshly - expects you to take a 18 q quiz w/ 2 essays in 25 min - lectures are biased - you must read the book to understand - the study guides are sometimes helpful - "in Roesler's opinion" is in a question every single test. STAY AWAY
Roesler requires time and effort, but there are no surprises on the tests if you have studied the material. Lots of extra credit, very willing to help students out. Excellent professor, great attitude.
One of the best professors I've had thus far. His class is not easy, but if you listen to his online lectures and do what he asks, you will do very well. He occasionally extends due dates and works with you if you email him. He always leaves great feedback on papers/quizzes, and is always willing to help you succeed.
Read your book, participation is a must. The dates were constantly being adjusted on assignments. I understand this is an online class, but I only have four days out of the entire eight weeks were some type of assignment wasn't due. it was kind of an overkill. He did recently add practice quizzes in the lectures, which was nice easy points.
He lectures a lot. Sometimes doesn't even talk about the chapter and just rants about stuff that's irrelevant. Doesn't care if you have any personal problems, especially when you miss a test. Emailed him about missing a quiz and he said, "bummer". Not that great of a teacher personally.
He was an awful teacher. He gave feedback with negative scores on the grade book. He never wanted to answer my questions in class and veered away from them. His quizzes are VERY hard, but he thinks they are super easy. You never get enough time to do the quizzes because they are timed. I would not recommend him to anyone taking polysci...
I had Roesler for an honors class and it was fine. He is very intelligent and goofy - as a person he is awesome. However, it sucks to have to listen to lectures outside of class, but on the same token I like that we can ask questions in class and get detailed answers without worrying about a timetable. It is a double-edged sword.
He has you take a quiz twice a week that ranges from 15-30 questions. The quizzes are not easy, and they do not give you enough time to finish them. He talks too much and not on the criteria that is on your quiz.
Very personable, caring; great conversation keeper! Gladly helps students!
During the online lectures, half the videos he links do not direct towards the right spot. Seemingly scatter brained and forgets a lot. Grades short answer questions hard and if you don't put exactly what he thinks you should incorporate into the answer its wrong. Even if you say everything he wants you will still not get a perfect grade on it.
online quizzes will make you fail the class.
Lots of extra credit, and youll need it! Do it ALL! Even though I got an A, it was a struggle. His online lectures were choppy and didnt make sense. Half of the stuff on the tests were not gone over in lecture or in the chapter reading. And yes, I read every work assigned. Hes a tough grader! He was always very accessible and willing to help.
Mr. Roesler really cares about his students and the classes he teaches. He keeps the class entertaining and interesting by covering current events first. He goes over the quizzes and whats expected every chapter. All his lectures are online. There are quizzes every week pretty much, but if you come to class and pay attention theyll be a breeze.
If you have any sort of conservative view, don't bother taking his class.A lot of what he does in class is complain about Trump & republicans and only does lecture for the last 20 minutes or so of class. As a person, I would be more than happy to have a drink with him and talk about anything BUT politics. Real nice guy, not that great of a teacher.
the hardest professor Ive had in my entire college career. makes the class extremely difficult. multiple quizzes a week and grades extremely hard. I think he forgets most students have more then just his class
The hardest classes I have ever taken. He accused me of cheating 3 times & gave me -1's on the tests/assignments I apparently "cheated" on. Provided no help when I reached out (which I did a lot, eventually stopped because he would not answer my questions). Lectures had not even half of the information you needed for tests. Google was my friend.
The course is set-up poorly and not easy to follow along. The lectures are choppy and all over the place, with inserts of personal views on topics. Quiz questions include those regarding Prof. Roesler's personal views on items. Although study guides are provided for Midterm and Final, the content is so inconsistent that it makes it hard to study.
lectures were pretty funny and easy to follow. As long as you do all of the homework and quizzes, youll be fine.
He is a really tough grader and I never received the whole points on any assignment. His lectures are not organized at all and he makes you watch 3-4 clips or interviews per week. The quizzes are based on his personal opinion and on the clips you watch and you have to answer like 15 q + write 2-3 essays in 20-30 min, not enough time in my opinion.
Always shows his personal views and on the test, there will be questions asking what his personal opinion is. Also, a lot of questions he never touches on in the lecture.
He is a really hard grader and puts a lot of his opinions into the questions. The take home final was a lot about opinion questions and he gave me 18 out of 25 and said I was too disjointed. I feel like hes only looking for what he wants to hear you say. This class takes a lot of work. If you dont want to work, dont take it.
I hated Prof Roesler. He is very rude. He blames you if you don't understand something. He thinks he knows you really well just after 2 weeks. His notes are horrible and very hard to understand. I do NOT recommend him to anyone.
Hes a really easy teacher if you have them for college 101. Hes really good at explaining the assignment, grading criteria and letting you go about your way. For attendance he just as a pole in the group chat, which is OK if youre not paying attention. He does like talking about politics and world events which can get awkward.
hard and gives a lot of homework
I took his American Government class online and had an overall positive experience. The schedule was very manageable with a quiz about every week, but the prequizzes and textbook made As and Bs easy to get. The quizzes also helped me get a good grade on both the midterm and final. He gives a lot of good feedback!
I felt that political views were being pushed on me. His lectures were hard to watch. He showed The Stephen Colbert show, which makes fun of politics, although they were more annoying than anything. There was a pre-quiz and regular quiz due every week. More quizzing and listening to lectures than actually doing work for the class.
He's a really good prof. He was organized and the class was set up in an easy to understand way. His lectures can sometimes include videos from famous late night hosts, which feel out of place at times, but it was never that big a deal. For being a Political prof, he talked about his views but it never felt like he was forcing them on you.
This was a mini-memster class and very easy as long as you put the work in (which is minimal).
Good Teacher, I took the Winter Mini Corse and it was a lot of work (nothing on the teacher). Definitely have to study for the Midterm and Final and be prepared to write a paper for both.
I took his POL 101 online last semester. He is nice, grades fairly, and responds to emails. There is a pre-quiz, an online lecture, and a quiz due every week, and there are 3 papers in the semester, 2 of which are due before the midterm and final.
I took this class online. There is 3 papers due over the semester, 1 with the midterm and final. There were one or sometimes 2 or 3 hour long lectures to listen to as well as a pre-quiz, quiz, discussion boards, and other assignments. If you take this class I'd prepare to do a lot of busy work. I had less homework in my math and science classes.
I took this class as a mini semester in total 16 days. This class is A LOT of work, easy work just lots. Every chapter has a pre quiz with an average of 30 question, you can take the pre quiz 3 times and a regular quiz. The questions on the pre quiz is also on the regular quiz. A mid term and final paper plus a writing assignment. Prof is caring.
Don't bother taking a course with him if your republican, christian, have morals, or any sense of individualism. All of his questions are very skewed to his beliefs, and will fail you for not answering with his opinion. Terrible teacher, and doesn't promote individualism whatsoever. Lousy excuse for a teacher that is supposed to support growth.
He doesn't stick to his own deadlines. In the syllabus is says that things would be due on sundays and on mondays, which I though was odd already but whatever. But when it comes time he has had things due on friday and saturday nights and he only takes half credit if something is turned in late.
I thought his class was amazing. Its obvious he actually cares and wants students to inform and understand themselves and the political spectrum. I've read many of the reviews and it's obvious that some people either didn't read, listen or study. Your DO NOT have to agree with his politics, he only wants you to make sure you understand your own.
Most things are based off of his opinion and the midterm and final are worth way too much in my opinion. He can have fun in class as long as you talk but he will say some stuff that's questionable.
Mr Roesler would be fine, but I would turn my assignments in before the deadline, and by the time he gave you feedback on what to fix to get points on your assignments back, he wouldn't give you your points back. Boring class, but my experience could be different from others.
