Paul is a fabulous TA! He really cares about the students, taking our successes and failures personally. He makes himself available to help; I can't even count the number of times I came to him outside of class with questions.
Paul explains things very well, but can have a wierd sense of humor. Available outside of class and always willing to give extra help.
Great TA, but he may be the only person in the world who enjoys math humor. Get past that though, and he's great. He explains everything, and will answer any questions in or out of class.
He's not always a hundred percent clear, but is willing to help you outside of class no matter what. He's in his office a lot, and will always help you if you find him there.
Read directly from the book, so if you don't understand the book, you are out of luck. Really did not enjoy his class and found him irritating. It was his first time teaching DiffEQ, but it was awful.
Good teacher. He has many office hours (use them). He can rush through some stuff but if you ask him for help he will explain what he did. If you do your homework and go to class the test are a breeze.
Good teacher that gives plenty of examples. See him in his office hours if you have problems. Do this and the class is a breeze.
hes cool
Probably one of the best Math teachers I have had at MST especially after having to suffer through Calc 3 with Leach. He is very helpful and and clear and will explain examples in more detail if there is confusion in the class. He may be a little odd and go off on tangents sometimes but he is a top notch Diff Eq professor.
He was one of the most entertaining professors I've ever had. He was constantly running across the room and jumping to reach the projection screen to give examples. He moves a little quickly through examples, but is available for office hours and responds to email within the day.
Mr. Runnion was a fantastic teacher. Great sense of humor and really made me want to come to lecture. He knows the material thoroughly and never made a mistake throughout all of Calc 1. Easy A, not because its easy, but because he is a great guy and amazing taecher. He loves his profession!
Runnion is a terrific professor. Very few professor have the kind of passion and energy that actually make you get out of bed at 9am for a calculus class. Runnion is on of those professors! I recall many instances in which I was smiling in his Calc. II course, due to his humor and energy. Highly recommended if an engaging lecture is what you seek!
Very energetic professor. Would do anything to help you understand the material better as long as you are putting in the work. The homework didn't help me nearly much as just studying old exams posted online.
I had Runnion for Calc 1 and I thought that he was an excellent professor. He was extremely clear and did everything step by step and reexplained things different ways if people didn't understand. He is one of the best math teachers that I have ever had.
He somehow manages to make the entire 125 student Calc 1 class laugh at a math joke at 9:00 am. He explains everything really well and will take the time to answer your questions if you don't understand something. He sometimes makes trick clicker questions so watch out for those and read carefully.
Oh, Paul. He was a fantastic teacher! He absolutely loves math, and because of that, he makes learning fun.
Runnion is one of the best professors I have ever had and is commonly regarded as the best math instructor on campus. Great teacher of Calc 1 and Calc 3.
He often works too fast doing examples. He is depending on questions to make him explain things rather than assuming you don't yet know the subject that well. Part of this class being such a pain is not him, it's the online homework. It isn't really based on the text we use so the notation is often different.
I had poor experiences with Runnion. When I took this course he had another instructor substitute teach for him once. The sub was terrible and she and the TA kept the class 15 minutes late, literally screaming at anyone who had to leave. When runnion returned he took the complaints about the incident personally and had animosity toward the class.
He was good, a hard class though.
Dr. Runnion is an incredible lecturer. He has a way of breaking down his lectures into pretty simple terms so that everyone has a chance to understand the material. He regularly does clicker questions, which count as attendance. The class is how you make it, if you choose to participate and listen, you have the chance to pass.
Dr. Runnion is by far the best math teacher at S&T. I had him for Calculus 1 and Differential Equations and he did a great job in both classes. He is very energetic about math which makes the lecture even more enjoyable. If you have a chance to take a math class with him, do it!
I had him for calc 1 and each time I came in to ask him a question about a test question and why they graded it this way, he was extremely condescending and not listening on what I have to say, he knows his stuff but makes the tests and is a very harsh grader
If you have taken calc 1 before then you are fine, if you haven't it is not a fun time, take it somewhere else along with the rest of your math
Runnion spends almost all class doing example problems. Following his work on the projector is extremely easy, and he is loud and clear enough to keep you awake even from the back of the lecture hall. Definitely your best option if you want a good grade in Calc 1.
Runnion was a great choice for trig. He is extremely knowledgeable in his field, but is somewhat condescending if you asking a vaguely worded question or don't really know what you're talking about. He knows his stuff which makes it easy to learn in class and his lectures/power points are very easy to follow. I would 10/10 take his class again.
If you're taking Calc 1 for the first time, you might have a hard time, but you should be okay. Very nice after class if you ask respectable questions.
I took this class as an easy blow off but instantly regretted when this was the lowest grade I had all semester. Be ready to work for it. He goes SO fast and TOO in depth. Just use the "Help Me Solve" on homework--which you must complete in a timely fashion if you want to do it well. He is rational & willing to help if you go to his office hours.
Professor Runnion is a reasonable professor, you do the work and you'll pass. Homework is barely worth anything, so 95% of your grade is dependent on doing well on exams, he is quick to give partial credit, so if you study and know what you're doing you'll do fine, if not, there are enough exams so that you can carry yourself out of a bad one.
I had Calculus 1 with Mr. Runnion in Fall 2016 and he remains the best lecturer I've ever had. However, if he writes the tests, it is extremely hard to pass the class if you have any other lecturer. His tests are full of trick questions and edge cases that he covers in his many examples during his lecture.
Professor Runnion is very clear at explaining Calc 1. There are often many specific examples in each lecture, which is beneficial if he writes the tests. If you ask a vague question, he is often condescending. Make sure you understand your question before you ask it if you don't want to be called out in front of the class.
Runnion was great, he made linear algebra the most interesting math class I took at S&T. He gives a more relatable understanding than most professors would, and can usually keep the class from being boring. It can get tricky, but its not the worst class in the world.
Professor Runnion has extremely refined lectures and he plans every minute of this class. He works through plenty of examples to aid in concrete understanding and writes very fair tests. On top of that he doesn't skip little things in lectures and shows every step of his work to make connections for students. Really, really enjoyed having Runnion.
Runnion's lectures are arguably some of the best I've had at S&T, but he is also unreasonably stubborn in his grading and doesn't really negotiate with students, even when he should. He decided to take off 2 out of 3 points on a true/false that I got right, because "my scratch work (brainstorming) on the side wasn't correct". On a TRUE/FALSE.
This class really was a pain and for one main reason.. The online homework.. It was assigned every single class day, in addition to a weekly quiz, both of which use the god awful MyMathLab which has the usability of a rotten banana and will count answers wrong when they arent in its "expected format" which isnt the same as what Runnion teaches us..
A solid calculus class. If you can pay attention and work for it, you'll pass.
He obviously has a passion for the subject, but I often found it hard to really learn anything from his lectures. Can be VERY loud. In respect to the course itself, expect a lot of busy work and difficult tests.
His lectures are amazing, hilarious, engaging, and interactive considering the lecture had 450 people. He is very accessible outside of class and is willing to help. Although he can be a bit condescending.
Avoid him if you can. Grading is rough, especially on the basic skills tests. Don't bother sending him an email about anything cause there is almost no chance he will be helpful, if he even answers.
Solid choice for calc 1. The lectures are fast and fill up exactly 50 minutes. He never rambles and doesn't waste a single word, but he does a good job explaining the material with examples. Loud and clear speaker. Keep an eye out for trick questions on the basic skills exams! Don't skip class and don't fall behind if you can help it.
Professor is not flexibile. He made me pick between taking a zero on an exam and attending a dear friend's funeral. Tests are nice though as they generally follow the old ones.
Doesn't matter if you choose not to have him as your professor because he's in charge of the math dept. He's one of the most merciless & rude professors I have ever met, so do not expect any leeway, even for the most extenuating circumstances. Even when he says he will do everything he can to help or be lenient during hard times, don't believe it.
I didn't need to show up, but I did every time. Professor Runnion is an entertaining guy, even though he has no right to be. He doesn't tell very many jokes or interesting stories, but I learn from him.
He is very difficult to reach. I have had to go through the head of the department to get ahold of him because he would not respond to anything. He is very passionate about the subject but if you need to contact him, good luck.
I hate this man
Dr. Runnion is an excellent choice for all of your math needs. Everyone I talk to likes him, and he is very easy to talk to (which I appreciate, since he is also my degree advisor). His speech cadence and volume make lectures comprehensible and reasonably-paced.
Runnion does not waste a single second during his lectures. He is incredibly informative and never rambles. His lectures are excellent. If you do the homework in this course and work hard you will do just fine. It is a difficult course but Runnion made it much easier.
Great lectures. He articulates concepts in a very clear and understandable manor and uses multiple examples that are very helpful. Pacing is also very good. Slow enough that I (a very slow writer) have plenty of time to take good notes, but fast enough that we never have to stay late to finish. Tests are pretty similar to the homework and reviews.
Math is hard, but at least he teaches it well. I've heard that he doesn't interact well in one-on-one situations, but as a professor, I think he does his job. Material is well presented, and he answers questions at the end of class clearly. The class is hard, but it's not his fault. Cool guy.
Very tough grader, very hard to reach outside of class, and unwilling to help students. Not a fan and will be avoiding in the future.
At the start of a lecture he laughed about someone getting a zero on a test (not by name, but still disrespectful). He did not send out reminders before a test, which is technically not required, but beware of missing a test. You have to calculate your grade using percentages from two different services, and its hard to know what to use.
He is pretty much a retard who had some connections inside school, master degree and a professor what a joke. There's more to the story your day will come Paul.
This man is literally the worst professor on campus. Calc 2 is already one of the hardest prerequisite classes, and Runnion makes it worse. He assigns so much homework. He also gets satisfaction by making students fail. This man is so mean. He has definitely made me cry on several occasions. DO NOT TAKE HIM! THIS IS A WARNING!
If you typically do well in math you will do well with Runnion, lectures are very concise and clear with some humor mixed in. If you typically struggle with math then you will likely hate this man, he comes off as rude and condescending which is especially rough when you're just wanting help.
You either love Runnion, or you hate him. He has a bit of a sarcastic humor, which could seem annoying to some. However, he is a very good teacher. He stays on topic, gives you resources to study for the exams, and answers questions very well.
Good guy. Freakishly in love with math, but that makes him good at teaching it. Tests are fair, never once saw something on a test that we didn't cover multiple times in class. Usually every test had 1-3 problems ripped straight off the review. Can be funny at times. He will ignore your emails though, so be ready to show up to 9am office hours
Runnion is a very disrespectful teacher who cares very little for any of the students taking his course. When prompted with emails, will not respond for months, even after in class and follow up reminders. He takes pride in failing students and implements purposefully difficult homework. He makes terrible rubrics and gives very little to no partial
BAD when it comes to more difficult concepts
While these are hard courses that he teaches, and he is very strict about the rubric, he is very good at explaining concepts and making sure you understand the material. Do not be afraid to go talk to him and ask questions!
Taking *very* detailed notes is absolutely required of you want to do well. Parts of the exams felt like trivia contests on the smallest parts of the lectures. Tests are weighted a lot heavier than homework, so mistakes can be costly. Lectures were informative and he did his best to make them engaging and sometimes funny.
Take someone else
Runnion has amazing lectures and the homework/quizzes/labs aren't bad at all. However, I have failed/barely passed every class I've had with him because of how it's weighted. Tests are ~70% and graded very harshly, so his classes are very scary for bad test takers. I'd recommend tutoring/LEAD sessions if you struggle with tests/math in general
Great teacher for a difficult class, this was my second class I took with Runnion, and what I can say is that he is very good at explaining concepts in multiple ways to ensure that you know what you are doing and why. He also makes classes less dull with occasional jokes. I would highly recommend choosing Runnion to teach you difficult courses.
Runnion grades super hard on his tests, and they are a large portion of your grade. However, he is fairly accessible outside of class, and his syllabus is clear. I was not a huge fan of how he taught, and he only taught everything one way.
Solid lectures and he usually answers questing questions during lecture well. Tests are a meaningful portion of the grade but manageable if you study and use other resources.
He has great slides and exam reviews. He's very knowledgeable about the subject that he is teaching and he does it very well. His personality can sometimes rub the wrong way but he's the best math professor on campus.
Go to lecture, do the homework, and get an "A". That is the recipe for success with Runnion. Nothing he tests you on should be a suprise.
If you aren't good with the math department's exams, avoid Runnion like the plague. His exams are 90% of the grade, making the homework feel like almost a waste of time to do, despite how much of it there is. You'll probably be fine if you take good notes, but he gives very little to work with in terms of actual study material for the exams.
This professor does not respond to emails or in class questions for the life of him. Actively laughs at students who fail exams even when try are active participating and trying. Tests are weighted extremely high, and you don't get to know your grade until midterms and then again at the end of the semester and is practically impossible to calculate
Runnion is one of the best lecturers I've had. He thoroughly explains the topics with informative slides. He has incredible knowledge on the material he teaches. He is willing to help if you need help.
Go to lecture, do the review, ace the test. Recipe for success with any Ru
Runnion speaks English fluently, and knows how to explain things in a way that makes sense. If he's introducing an advanced topic that's described in the book with a bunch of strange words, he's knows which ones will make us want to shoot ourselves, and he's able to explain them well. Grading/expectations are clear. Always prepares us for tests.
Does an amazing job of explaining concepts and working out examples in a way that helps students understand them. The homework is very time consuming but lectures prepare you for the homework and the tests.
It's Calc III what do you expect? Though he did change the exam format that had been the same for a decade, completely throwing people off. On top of this he tested on topics he explicitly said he wouldn't. A bit of a curve ball when it's worth 20 percent of the exam. But so be it, wasn't too terrible.
Bro hooked me up with an A for the final grade. Some other guy with a lower grade couldn't make the final, and instead of rescheduling he gave him and everyone above an A. Also the class was easy, exams were very similar to past ones, and the topics were very easy. Not a bad class to fill a req.
knows his stuff and make the material easy to understand as not taking up too much of our time.
Runnion is overall a great prof. He does move fast however he explains things very well and provides slides to follow. He is willing to answer questions and talk through any problems that you have.
Runnion was alright. He was funny at times but also boring at others. He often spoke in mathematical jargon, not impossible to understand but also easy to lose focus on if you weren't being extra attentive. He was usually pretty clear about what youd be tested on, but sometimes there'd be a curveball question to throw you off on the multiple choice
Very straight to the point and doesn't waste time during lectures. He explains concepts well and also provides other info about exams and studying tips. His slides are easy to follow, although some lectures can get boring.
Very good professor. Very clear expectations and teaches very well.
One of those professors that you hear bad things about, but then you realize the people who say those things never should've made it past Calc 1. Guy knows his stuff, his lectures are jam-packed with good info, and he will make sure you are well prepared for exams. Truly the GOAT of the math department here at S&T.
I had a hard time in lecture trying to keep up with his speed. Runnion is great at explaining topics, but I felt like sometimes the topics flew over my head as I was trying desperately to connect them together. The homework and tests for this class were standard difficulty. It is easy to get at least a B if you do everything and study.
Run! Dont take his classes unless you have to.
Not sure how he became professor with just a Masters degree but have heard hes got connections to get this job. Very tough on students. Avoid at all possible cost
Some may call him the greatest math teacher ever. Clear and straightforward, clear grading, no surprises on the exams, well-spoken, great guy,
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. Teaches in a way that makes sense for the subject.
Best lecturer at S&T. It's hard not to learn when it a Runnion class. Everything is very organized and straightforward, and there are no surprises in his courses. Go to lecture, do the homework and understand it. Labs are extremely helpful. The bad ratings are from lazy C students that should have never come to S&T.
A little sassy when students ask questions but a good teacher overall.
