If you're taking astronomy, TAKE HIM! He's great! He's super smart, funny, and very helpful.. gives you answers to H/W in his office! His tests can be difficult if you don't study your notes though, but everything is straight from his Lecture NOTES!
He is great!!! He explains everything VERY clearly, if you have any questions, he will answer them until you get it. The tests can be tough if you don't study. But if you do the homework and the practice tests, your home free.
Awesome teacher! His class is entertaining and fun, and you learn a lot. The tests and homework are easy IF you pay attention.
Tough but fair. The material can be tough but Sasse is a fine lecturer who knows how to bring the subject matter to life. Plus he's a helluva nice guy. One Warning: If you take this class you better do your homework. Fortunately, Free help is available to all.
Great guy, awesome teacher. The material is sometimes tough, but he makes it fun and easier to understand. Highly reccommended.
One of the funniest teachers I've ever had. Class is easy if you attend and do the homework. Made the material easy to learn and kept things interesting. Was an 8am class for me and I only fell asleep once :) (that's good for me)
Good teacher, enjoyed his class

Awesome teacher, makes the work very easy with his teaching style. Makes the subject very interesting. he uses a laptop and a projector as a back-drop to his lecture so it is very clear and easy to understand. But do your homework, its a must.
BEST TEACHER I EVER HAD!!! Science has nothing to do with my BA outside of IGETC, but Paul was fascinating. I worked VERY HARD in his class, has my ass kicked a few times, but came out triumphant, and learn facts that I'm gonna retain for years to come.
I have him this semester and he is a hell of good teacher. he is clear and makes the lectures fun and interesting. and the looks he makes with his face are just priceless!!!
EASY!!!! i just dont know how people get like 50% on his tests, this class was so easy,he makes very easy to grasp the info. i did the hw and stuff, but basically studying before the test guarantees an A. VERY GOOD TEACHER, great personality. one of the best teachers i had
Sasse is amazing!!!! The class is extremely interesting and he is extremely helpful in clearing up any misunderstandings. Class is composed for 4 exams which require a GOOD amount of studying if you hope to do well. I highly recommend taking Astro from him! Super friendly!
awesome. he is so nice and has the best facial expressions. took the class early in the morning and he always kept me up. so interesting. take him.
Has a lot of rehearsed stories to mix into his lectures, but they're told well, and they help keep attention early in the morning. The way he pronunciates also helps bring life to this class. He made me enjoy it even though I had my doubts early on. Very helpful. If you take a class at 8 in the morning this semester, make it this one.
Mr. Sasse was a great teacher. He not only kept the tempo up in class, he openly invited students to his office hour for extended assistance. He is very enthusiastic. You can tell he is passionate about the subject. Motivating and encouraging. GREAT sense of humor!
Sasse is really great! He's an excellent teacher, his lectures are funny and interesting, and he is super helpful in office hours. I highly recommend visiting him during his office hours, it definitely made the class for me! Take his class!
Paul Sasse is a marvelous instructor! I enjoyed his lectures and time spent in his class. He enjoys what he does and the subject he presents, which makes the class interesting and easy to enjoy. take Paul Sasse's class. He is great! Not to mention, easy on the eyes ;]
Amazing lecturer! Keeps class entertained with funny anecdotes and enthusiasm. The class moves at a good tempo. Tests require a bit of studying but he covers everything clearly in class and is always willing to slow down and help out. Take Astro! Take Sasse!
He is a great teacher. He is one of those people who actually love what he teaches so he gets into his lectures so it helps you get into it. All in all i think he is awesome.
great class and teacher. he loves what he teaches and it makes the subject more interesting. he is always willing to help and answers questions at anytime. the class material is not too complicated, but if you miss class often it is hard to catch up. grade based on 3 yests and a final.
VERY helpful teacher. MUST show up 2class cause so much info is covered each time. Subject is not horrbily hard but def requires some effort & a decent amount of time. Grades r determined from 4 tests, each is 25% of yr grade. He has office hr every day & is more than willing 2help. U need 2ask questions if confused & STUDY 1 week before each test
Most amazing teacher I have ever had.
Organized, great lecturer, explains hard concepts with clarity. Makes the funniest faces sometimes! Attendance isn't mandatory, but its much easier to learn by listening to him than struggle by yourself. Give this class a reasonable chunk of time to study on. I would take his class again if I could! Take Sasse!
This class is difficult . . . very difficult. But it's not the teacher's fault, it's the subject in itself. You need to pay very close attention in class. Do recommend, though.
Professor Sasse was really interesting to have as a teacher, definitely worth it. He made class fun and easy, despite the somewhat difficult subject matter.
This class was amazing. It's challenging, but he helps so much if you're confused. You have to be at every class, though, especially if you want to understand everything. Taking Astro with any other teacher is just wrong.
great teacher. The book you work out of is a handbook he wrote and there are 4 sections with an exam at the end of each section which makes up the grade. the material is not difficult to teach yourself but he does make it a lot easier. Im taking 120 this semester even though i dont need to, just because he made the subject so interesting.
Paul Sasse is one of the most influencial instructors I've ever had. He has an authentic respect for people who are not natural "science" people but work hard for their grade. He's never disrespectful because it's not your field; he respects hard work. Plus he makes the most hysterical faces when lecturing. And he's really f-ing cute!
A genius! He is not afraid to dance around the room and engage you in his insane knowledge. Gives information about content of test, and explains topics with elegance. Grade is based on tests only, but one needs to do everything else (attend, homework, study) in order to actually get decent grades. Class is easy at 1st and gets more complicated.
Best teacher ever.
Mr Sasse is a great teacher, the course is challenging, but he does a great job making sense of it all. The book is a book he wrote. I would take his class again and recommend him as a teacher to anyone taking astronomy.
Dropped after 2 classes. I couldn't stand being inches away from my classmates in a crowded room no windows, and not having a book. If you don't get it from his lecture there's nowhere else to get it from. Seems like a nice guy but also alpha male who loves center of attention. I bet it's girls who love him so much here.
Surprisingly entertaining for an 8am class! A lot of people dropped after the first and second classes, so the room definitely wasn't crowded afterward. The class is easy so far and the teacher seems willing to help. The "textbook" is a packet of papers some DVC Astro teachers put together previously and it is very helpful and very inexpensive!
So funny!
Mr. Sasse is a really good teacher, he knows his stuff and explains it well. If you go to class, pay attention, take notes, do your hw, and studya ilttle bit too then you will pass the class. He is really funny and a hottie!! And ask questions, let him know who you are.
A really good teacher, go to class, pay attention, take notes, do ur hw, and a little bit of studying can guarantee a good grade in his class. He knows his stuff, is funny, and keeps you interested. If you learn better when teachers explain really well then you'll like sasse.
Simply the best teacher one could ever hope for. I learned more during the 2 semesters I spent in his class than I have from any other teacher I've had at DVC. His instruction is clear & engaging, & his tests are challenging but comprehensive. The only downside I've found is he only teaches 2 courses. Recommend to all!
GREAT TEACHER! He has interesting stories to go along w/ his material, which makes the class entertaining - even at 8am! He doesn't require attendance, but if you miss the lectures you get lost very quickly for tests. No required hw, grades are based on 4 tests, which aren't too bad if u do your practice hw's, self-exams & attend his lectures.
Even though Mr. Sasse was a funny teacher, his class was HARD. I studied for two of his exams for hours, and still failed them. After that, I had to drop. His class lectures are almost ridiculous because it is filled with so much information that he expects us to retain for the tests....it's hard. He is hard, but a funny guy.
From what I heard, Astro 110 is pretty easy.. but Astro 120 is really hard with Sasse. He is a great teacher but out of 35, about 15~20 dropped :(
he used powerpoint all the time, not really helpful in teaching you have to help yourself by reading the textbook which will take forever. The textbook is hard to understand. You have to repeat yourself reading it to really understand the material.Test are mostly MCQ and 2 essays. Homework and quizzes are important.
Mr. Sasse is absolutely wonderful. I have never been interested in physical science, and astronomy was my favorite class. If you take a genuine interest in the class, pay attention and study, you'll get atleast a B.
Paul Sasse is awesome. He's nerdy, he's hilarious, and he explains things really well. Attendance may not be mandatory, but if you don't go to class you'll fall behind really fast. I love that he just uses the workbook and not a textbook. Your grade is based entirely on 3 tests and a final--easy, so long as you study.
Super hard! avoid his 120 class, only 2 or 3 people got an A for his 120 class
Paul is a very nice guy. Very funny!Even though he has a great personality, he is a hard grader, and the thing that really got me was that his class is completely based off of tests. I struggled for three months studying and working really hard for this class, but had to drop. He is a wonderful explaner though, and goes out of his way to help studen
This was a very hard class for me. He's a very nice and funny guy and was very helpful but it was ALOT of information to retain for tests. I wish he gave homework and extra credit! I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you really need it.
The only reason i rated his easiness so low is because your grade is souly based off of 4 exams, but as long as you listen to this comical, entertaining, intriguing, and knowledgeable professor, you will be GOLDEN. Paul Sasse is a badass, straight up
One of my favorite teachers ever! He is very entertaining and is great at explaining difficult subject matter. you do have to do your part and show up and study but he is extremley helpful and will send you the notes from class if you miss a class
Best teacher I've ever had! Clearly explains everything, and if you have trouble understanding he will gladly go over it again. Very available, over e-mail and office hours. Very helpful and funny.
Amazing teacher! As long as you show up and listen to the lectures you should be fine. Some things are a bit hard to understand but he will gladly go over them again during class, office hours, or e-mail. You should also probably have a little trig background, it would help.
Loved this class and Paul makes it a lot of fun. He is available to help students and rewards students by dropping the midterm grades if they do better on those sections of the final
He is so handsome! And he is funny! His jokes my be reused class to class but he keeps it fresh sounding. . . I would recommend him to anyone. He cares a lot about his students and their success in his class.
Sasse is awesome, but the course it self is a bit hard for me.Make sure you study hard and get a good binder cuz the textbook is heavy!ENJOY ASTRO 110! I will always remeber the "chicken wing",LOL.
Good professor, very passionate about what he teaches. The subject matter is difficult, but if you study hard you'll be fine. The class is graded on a curve.
Just randomly thought about professor Sasse... I took his Atro 110 class about 12 years ago. That's how good he is - I remember his name all these years later because watching him teach a class was like watching a great performance on a stage. He knew everything by heart and loved his subject. His enthusiasm for astronomy is infectious.
Mr. Sasse is AMAZING! He loves astronomy and loves teaching it. His class will seem really hard at first, but it's not. He's super helpful and explains difficult concepts in the easiest ways. He will also take as long as you need to literally do every math problem on your homework for you, so don't let them scare you. Favorite class ever so far.
PAUL IS THE MAN! He wants you to pass and is VERY helpful if you need help with ANYTHING in his class. Definitely recomend his office hours. 3 tests and on final. He tells you what the topics will be on the test. Making Flashcards for his class goes a long way too.
The smartest science teacher I've ever had! He breaks down complicated phenomena into readily understandable pieces and makes you enjoy learning it. The tests appropriately cover the syllabus. Some problems might be conceptually chanllenging but not mathematically, and as long as you think hard enough you will get it right.Inspiring class!!!
I'm typically a cynical, glass is half empty sort of guy, so I am not exaggerating when I say that Paul Sasse is the greatest teacher in existence. I took all of his classes except lab, which I took from another teacher and dropped. I'm taking his lab this semester and just the act of registering for one of his classes is to know true happiness.
One of the best teachers I've taken at DVC. Not so easy but very entertaining class and lecture. SASSE IS THE MAN!!
Probably the BEST Astronomy teacher at DVC. I am a visual person and they way he explained things really helped me understand what he meant. He will get the class involved and will answer any questions you have. He wrote the book used in the class, and it has everything you need in it! (: I would suggest him to anyone who wanted to take Astronomy.
Paul Sasse is a stud. He's a great teacher, and saying he's a very animated teacher is an understatement. Astronomy is a hard subject to grasp at times, but he succeeds at getting the message across. He's one of the best teachers at DVC, and I highly recommend him.
HE knows what he talking about, he has a genuine interest in the subject, which makes you interested. office hours are the best way to get one-on-one learn/explain etc. this teacher is understanding .IMPORTANT:YOU MUST ATTEND EVERY CLASS. you can join any one of his 110 classes, but if you miss a lecture its hard to understand the subject matter.
Paul is dope! totally recommend his class it was so much fun and honestly learning about the stars and stuff is pretty cool. Super easy class just make sure you come everyday or its hard to catch up!
I just finished my graduate degree in accounting at Uc Berkeley and I must say in my 8 years of school I have never had a teacher as clear, animated and interesting as Paul Sasse. It would be a shame not to take a course with this man.
Paul Sasse is potentially the finest professor I've ever had. He is patient, compassionate, interesting, extremely intelligent, and always willing to help. This is not an easy class, but if you attend office hours, do the homework, attend tutoring, and don't give up, with Paul's help, you can succeed. I changed my major because of this class.
theres a lab every dam week so if you have time for 3-4 hours of hw for 1 credit its cool. But he is a good teacher
Paul is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He keeps the class entertained during long lectures, but he also makes sure that you understand the concepts. There is no mandatory homework, but it's really helpful to do it so you're prepared for the tests! Even though he doesn't take attendance, attend class, study before tests, and you'll do fine!
Attendance is a must and everything is in a booklet you have to buy for his class. There are no homework assignments and your grade is calculated by tests. This is not an easy A so be prepared. Paul is one of the most concise, and most passionate teachers I've ever had. He's also helpful if you need him. I highly recommend you take this class!
Paul Sasse is a great professor! He's very clear from day one on what he would like to see from the students. I had him for summer school and he was, by far, my favorite professor. He's passionate about his work and really tries to get you involved. Highly recommend! Tests can be hard, but study from his workbook and you're in the clear!
Paul is awesome. One of the finest on campus. Yes, tests are difficult, but the answers are all in the book and discussed in class. He is a great lecturer, very helpful, clear about expectations, fair grader, funny, and in general an all around great guy. Take him, he is awesome.
Paul is perhaps the best teacher I've ever had, especially in the field of Science. The guy is hilarious and knows what he is talking about, plus the class is genuinely interesting. If you're going to DVC, you have to take a class with this guy
Paul is an amazing professor. Even though I didnt get an A in the end, I felt so lucky to take this class with him that I had learned to appreciate the sky above us.
Mr. Sasse was by far the best professor I've ever had at DVC. He kept the lectures engaging and knows the material like the back of his hand. He is a genuinely caring guy who puts a lot of effort into making sure his students know the material. Your grade in the class is based on 4 tests, so study hard! He is also very helpful during office hours.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want a good grade on your tests, you HAVE to go to all of his classes. One of the best teachers I've ever had. I had him during the summer (high schooler who took this class for fun), so the pace was a lot faster than normal. Even then, Sasse's lectures are engaging & concise. Really hope to take another class
Paul is the man! He explains everything in the course with clarity while keeping the students engaged through his humor and mythological tales regarding the stars. I know feel like a good astronomer and the tips and tools I learned from the course has made me the person around my friends who can look up at the sky and identify constellations.
Mr. Sasse is an excellent professor. His lectures are fun and interesting, but for an "elementary" astronomy class it was EXTREMELY difficult. I'd rather have taken the 110 class. But he's funny, kind, and always there to help. He wants you to understand the concepts, and he curves the grades up a letter at the end of the semester. Textbook is must
Hilarious! I would definitely take this class again! Make sure to do the homework: essential to pass the tests!
He makes it clear that if you don't show up you don't pass. Everything that is on his exams are in the lectures and on the homework. If you work for it, you'll have it. Its not that hard to pass. He's passionate about what he teaches which keeps it interesting. I definitely recommend taking him.
Professor Sasse was honestly the best. You can tell he really cares about what he's teaching and that his students are successful. He's so willing to help and will always do his best to clarify if you don't understand something! It's definitely not an easy class but if you study and pay attention you'll do fine.
Paul was super cool during the summer semester and made sure that anything we wouldn't be using at our current DVC locationnorthern hemisphere was tossed out of our learning in order for us to be very clear and concise during the lecture. Would take again, hell I might even take his astro 130 for kicks
Warning: this class requires dedication to pass. Dont let the new vocabulary scare you off, because the wonders of the universe really come out through Sasse. Paul is extremely good at teaching astro concepts and he does so in a way that inspires you to want to continue to learn. This class pushed me to become the student I didn't think was in me.
if you wanna a wonderful and amazing astronomy course,Paul is the man!even it will be many sleepless night and desperation for an A,but I Guarantee you that totally worth.
Lectures are fantastic - super interesting and informative. If you don't go to lecture you probably won't pass.
It takes A LOT of dedication to pass, your grade is based off your grades you get on your test. Each test is 25%. There is a lot of vocabulary to learn. If you don't go to the lectures, you have a high chance of not passing. He is willing to help you during office hours.
This is a fantastic class. Paul is an incredible teacher, and is passionate and informed about everything is says. Good notes are imperative, I recommend a second notebook to write the more lengthy definitions down into. This is a very tough class, however, in my case it never felt arbitrary. I think this class is worth the effort.
Wonderful teacher defiantly would recommend!
Wonderful teacher defiantly would recommend! But beware you must show up to class to pass! Fun teacher though.
If you're willing to put the effort inthis definitely takes effortProfessor Sasse is fantastic. He is kind, funny, and makes things very simple to understand. There is a lot to cover in this course so studying and attendance are musts. Not easy, but awesome. Go to his office hours, he loves to help. Answers questions until 2 minutes b4 the test.
Paul's a great professor and knows exactly what he's doing. If you don't understand something he'll explain it to you in at least one way that you'll understand. This class is far from an easy A, but if you work hard and utilize office hours you will pull through. Fair warning though, the multiple choice on tests are worth three points each.
He managed to make a 3-hour night class pretty fun! Homework is optional (I did not do any of them). His lectures, the self tests in the book, and his website were all extremely helpful. As long as you really study your notes and do the self tests, you should be fine.
Astro 120 was not an easy class but Paul took time to make sure everyone was clear on the material. Missing class can REALLY set you back.
Best teacher possible for this course. Not easy stuff, but his teaching makes it seem easier. No homework or participation points, your whole grade is based off of four exams, but if you go to every class and pay attention you will do fine. No textbook, just a workbook. Really fun teacher. I highly recommend. Always offers extra help.
This class is tough but he really makes it interesting and give a lot of usable information. Also planetarium was fun! I would suggest this teacher.
Paul by far is one of the best professors i have ever had, he is hilarious and passionate on what he is teaching and makes sure everyone understands everything he talks about.
The sarcasm is strong in this one. He's got an awesome sense of humor and is way more laid-back than your average prof. I took him in the summer, it was clear he did everything he could to help us pass. Easily one of the best teachers I've had in my 3 years at DVC
Professor Sasse, made the class interesting and always addressed all questions, he expects you to learn the material, so do yourself a favor and study daily! BTW ASTRO 110 is fun, but it involves a bit of physics and trigonometry, so brush up on your math skills!
Sasse is the most amazing professor I've ever had. He always answers questions and will explain something many different ways to get it across to you. Makes astronomy fascnating, and the class is easy if you go to the lectures and do the homework (which you don't turn in) and study for the test. Good for a non science/math major
Though attendance is not mandatory, being present in each lecture is crucial in order to succeed in the class. He is a passionate and funny teacher who knows his stuff. He is friendly and even wrote the workbook you will be using in class everyday. There is no turn in homework so the grade is based off of the 4 tests you take.
He is pretty funny and a great dude! If you're interested in astronomy take this course and his 120 and 130 courses are pretty cool too. Just make sure to take your notes and study them for the test and you'll do fine
Sasse' facial expressions are hilarious, and he is entertaining to learn from. Very educated, his laboratory was hands-on and Paul was clear on what he expected from us. His labs take up a lot of time, and are likely to drag on until after class. Labs are due every week and he is strict on his formatting criteria. Interesting experience.
Paul Sasse truly is a gem of DVC. His lectures are incredibly engaging and he can make you excited about the most benign things. The 4 trips to the planetarium were a highlight for me. You don't need to show up to class, but do so for your own benefit. Despite the class being fun, it also requires a lot of work so do so! I wish I put in the effort.
Most fascinating class with the most fascinating professor. He knows exactly what he's doing, so you have to be the one to keep up. Grade is based on four exams, so a lot of effort needs to be put in. He will show you exactly what you will be tested on. It's mostly memorization. Also, his humor is one for the books. No regrets at all, take him!
Paul is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are so engaging and he clearly loves what he is teaching. Visiting the planetarium is really fun. Your grade is solely based on 4 test scores, so they are extremely important. He gives you all the information you need to be successful. Highly recommend.
Awesome Person! You will have to do your homework (not collected or graded) and you will have to study. But this guy is straight forward - "Here's exactly what is expected, here's exactly what you will need to pass the test" "Here it is, listen and take notes" "Ask if you have questions" What more could you want from an instructor?
Got a B from his ASTRO 110 and a C from his Lab course, but no regret, 10/10 will take again.
Mr. Sasse was a cool teacher but the subject is extremely difficult. Hardest class I have ever taken and it is not even close. Definitely not recommended for majors in which astronomy is not required. Much respect for Paul, showed up to class every day even though I need I would drop.
Professor Sasse is fun and energetic with his teaching. His classes are interesting and include plenty of visual aids to assist in your learning. Little class participation, however questions are highly encouraged. The subject matter is very tough and while tutoring and Paul are both there to help, 4 tests will determine your final grade.
Paul Sasse is an excellent teacher with lots of activities and tricks to make an occasionally confusing subject easier. Attendance is essential to understand all the material. 4 tests each worth 25% of your final grade. Wish the grade was spread out over more assignments. Loved the planetarium visits. Took the class for fun and would take again.
He promotes lectures based on students that know the basic knowledge of the universe. Even if you join his classes without late or absent, speak up in his class actively, go to his office hour or tutor with showing respects then submit your homeworks on time, you won't pass. I highly NOT recommend to take his class unless you are a Astronomy major.
Professor Sasse is such a nice man and makes learning a difficult subject fun. He really does his best to make sure his students understand the material and provides resources for those who dont. His lectures are generally pretty engaging and the planetarium visits are fun. The only negative is your grade is based solely on 4 tests.
100% of grade is based on exams and only exams so study. Fun class though.
One of the most genuinely interesting and well rounded professors I have come across at DVC. The class itself was tough to say the least, but was also quite a memorable journey. I'll admit, I will miss going to the planetarium and hearing his lectures about the phases of the moon and orbiting of the planets.
He was the toughest teacher I've had so far, but he was tough in the sense that if you really buckled down and did the work and tried you could go places but if you half tried then you got half a grade. Take it seriously but the teacher is good, and good luck.
By FAR the greatest teacher I've ever had at any level. He has polished his lectures to 100% perfection. The subject gets confusing, but he explains everything CRYSTAL CLEAR and tells you exactly what he expects for exams. The guy is hilarious and passionate about his subject. I am now super into astronomy. He deserves far more than a 5/5.
Paul Sasse is the best professor I had at DVC. He's witty, engaging and thorough. No expensive textbook ($30 workbook) DO THE HOMEWORK, it isn't turned in, but helps comprehend the material. Your grade is 4 exams. This is a difficult course, but Paul brought out the best in me. Six years later, that's the highest compliment I can give him.
A rare gem of a professor who offers an interesting and enjoyable course without sacrificing detail or difficulty. Although his field is astronomy, he teaches about many subjects as well as life in general. He wants you to not just know the rule, but to understand the reasoning and logic behind it. Grade based on only four exams, but very worth it!
Paul is my favorite teacher of all time! If you care about learning + show it with participation you will do well. Take advantage of office hours + ask him questions over email. His lectures are the best! DO THE PRACTICE TESTS (yes they will help you on the real test) Be sure to STUDY on your own, yes he can tell if you have/haven't been.
Very engaging lectures and he answers all questions asked. No graded homework - make sure to prepare for the 4 exams.
He's my favorite professor of my entire education. He is incredibly sharp, and his lectures are really entertaining. The fact that your grade is based on a few tests can be daunting, but if you do poorly on his first test and improve your score next time, he will actually curve your final grade if you show improvement. TAKE HIS CLASS-IT'S THE BEST!
Great teacher, always entertaining lectures, everything is done out of a workbook, no homework turned in but you need to do it to ready for the exams. 4 exams make your entire grade. Excellent teaching style, fun professor, though a tough class. Not an easy A
Literally one of my favorite professors at DVC. He makes the lectures really fun and interesting and manages to get the students engaged in what he is teaching. You would definitely have to work for a good grade but he is willing to listen and offers a lot of help.
Attending lecture is the only way to learn the material for this class(no textbook), so don't take if you like to skip. Only graded on 4 tests(this includes final) so each one is 25% of grade. BUT, super interesting material and Sasse knows his stuff, his lectures were always great. Hard class though, memorization heavy. You WILL have to study.
Easily my favorite class that Ive taken at Dvc. His lectures are very interesting and I looked forward to class. However , if you frequently skip class you will NOT pass. All the information is in the lecture. Grade is based on 4 tests.
Extremely difficult class to pass, and I am by no means a bad student.
This class isnt necessarily "super difficult," but it's very content rich. So if you are great with using flashcards, memorizing specific numbers, and critical thinking, you'll do well. If you think you can just show up to class and not study, you will fail. Go to tutoring. Do the homework. 4 exams, each 25%/ grade. Study off of HW and study guides
I wouldnt take this teacher if youre not a good test taker, he is difficult. Even if youre a good student I still wouldnt recommend him, having your grade depend on only tests is the absolute worst things a teacher could do. Lecture heavy gives homework out of the textbook but doesnt grade it or look at it. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Without a doubt the best professor I've ever had. Made the material easy to understand and expand on. Extremely easy to engage in his lectures, you'll find it hard not to pay attention. Bonus: he's extremely kind and very funny.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He challenged me to do my best and gave me all of the support that I needed. His class sparked my interest in science. He gives funny and fascinating lectures and is clearly passionate about astronomy & teaching. This was one of my favorite classes/labs at DVC and I can't recommend Paul highly enough.
Paul was awesome. He was easy to approach, happy to help, entertaining and it is CLEAR his best interest is in his students. Your grade is based off 4 tests (incl final) but come to class/take notes and you WILL pass. Lectures are clear & you're only given information you NEED. It is up to you to put in the effort. Really interesting & fun class.
Wow, this class was a journey. It is extremely difficult. I am an excellent student and fought hard to pass with a C. Great teacher, difficult material. The class will start out full and at the end retain about 12 students. If you manage to stay until the end you will have opportunity to better your grade-but it won't come easy.
Homework is optional but DO IT. It helps so much for his tests and quizzes. Not to mention the practice quizzes he provides in the booklet. Paul is an amazing professor, and I can honestly say with confidence that I learned so much from both 110 and the lab.
These were the best lectures at DVC hands down. Missing class is suicide; I'm not kidding. I had an easier time due to my own ability, but others will have trouble. The tests are actually pretty hard. You'll need to put in the effort. 350 characters isn't enough to express how incredible this Paul is. Please take this class.
Took lab after taking 110 lecture, both with Sasse. Hes one of the best teachers at DVC, his lectures are truly outstanding. You will need to show up to pass, because he will tell you all the info you need to succeed, as long as you're listening. His tests will show if you studied or not. Class may be hard, but he really cares about his students.
Worth the tuition!
His lectures do not match his homework or the exams. He required you to read chapters from start to end. His lectures only cover about 20% of exam material. Do not take his class if you are not majoring in astronomy. Hes an amazing guy but his exams are dealbreakers..
Great guy and great lectures but his exams lack 80% of material we never covered in class. Take this course if you plan to pursue Astronomy, otherwise this course will defeat you.
His exams are killer. Ever since we went online he has been making it harder for students. He may be nice and caring but his grading is unfair and he does not have any remorse for his students. His class is beneficial to anyone pursuing Astronomy. Not worth taking.
AMAZING!!! Paul is amazing! Love his classes and his lectures! Makes learning fun and informative!
His lectures do not match with his exam s or homework. He expects his lecture to be what you do NOT rely on, and wants you to read the book instead. He made our final exam all essay prompts and we didnt get to finish our exam in time because of this. Hes really unfair and quite rude if you speak to him in private.
A low level class that uses proctor on exams all just quizzes and exams no hw. Wants to specific answers and questions do not make much sense and confuse you sometimes. In person he is funny and helpful but, online I would never take him due to the terrible layout of his canvas and the specifics he wants from your answers is absurd. A irl F online
Literally the worst teacher I have had since rona hit us. He can't be an online teacher he does not comprehend the situation we are in. His lectures do not co relate to the exam and quizzes unlike ANY NORMAL teachers. The questions also are confusing and specific it is actually ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE HIM THERES NO POINT. He is not made for online
If you're looking to take astronomy with him online, find someone else. His entire canvas layout does not prepare you for the exams which are the only things that go into the gradebook besides quizzes. His pre-recorded lectures were super convenient until I realized they were teaching me nothing I actually needed to pass. Sets you up to fail.
If you like doing lectures and then basing your whole grade on tests, this class is for you. The teacher is great at teaching.
WOW! Sasse was by far the best teacher I had during my fall semester. Made the class fun to come to and easy to learn astronomy. Must show up as he covers a lot of important information and tells you what you need to know to pass the tests. Highly recommend!
Since we're all forced online, reviews before said he was good so I figured I'd sign up for him. Did not know what I would get into. He changed the format of his exam into essay Q's and practice tests do NOT help. Recently his lectures stink, barely enough info to put in notes and study for, if you can figure it out. At least the videos are good.
He's a good professor, the issue is he teaches the topic as if you already have some understanding of how the universe works. If you aren't an astronomy major DONT take his class. He's one of the toughest graders because it seems like he figures that most students have alot of knowledge on the universe prior to taking astronomy classes in college.
Professor Sasse is obviously passionate about astronomy but his class is absolutely horrendous. This was the hardest class I've ever taken. The exams are incredibly specific and do not coincide with the material from the MANY lectures every week. He grades with ridiculously high standards with zero room for error. Do not recommend.
In the online class, he posts lecture videos every week and a short quiz at the end of the week. Exams can be somewhat stressful as they cover a lot of material and contain essay questions, but nothing over the top if you pay attention to the videos and follow along. Also is a pretty chill guy. Solid pick for a professor. I was definitely satisfied
Prof Sasse really cares about his students. The content is heavy abut if u study u will do okay. He's a tough grader but if you ask questions he goes easy on u.
This class was so stressful, I had to drop it. He just made lecture videos that were so difficult to understand. It's impossible to get your grade up since tests are the only thing that go into the gradebook. He seems like a great guy, but the class is awful and sets you up to fail.
My first B at DVC Seems truly passionate about the subject and kind, but the online format makes it impossibly dense. Zero A in the entire class, average in final of 30% (max of 80%), that he made harder even if the two midterms had 40% average. Many dropped due to super-specific killer exams that ask to know and understand perfectly the class.
No homework, theres 4 exams and they are difficult!! Exams are worth pretty much your entire grade. His lectures are interesting and youll want to watch them!
Yeah don't take this class if you can't take it in person, and maybe not even then. He increased the difficulty of his tests for the online course to an absurd degree. Subject matter can be confusing, especially without immediate access to him to clarify. Lectures and homework are extremely insufficient preparation for the tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! I am an A student and this is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I studied for 5 hours for the first exam and I still got a D. Do not take him. I wish I could drop this class. None of the lectures or homework prepares you for the exams. Pretty much only grades by exams. AND THEY ARE PROCTORED! Good luck!
I previously gave prof sasse a poor rating but I would like to amend that. This was the hardest class I have ever taken, but I did well in the end. It takes work and dedication and lots of extra studying but it can be done. His lectures are good, the material is just difficult. He warns you about the difficulty ahead of time. Listen to him.
Paul Sasse is the reason every night I'm able I still look at the stars. If I could give people about to take his class one suggestion, one at all, Do the things he says to go home and do. Be a backyard astronomer, look like an idiot using your fist's and fingers as scientific instruments. I am taking Astro 120 this next semester and I can't wait.
Requires installation of spyware on computers, couldn't get a school issues computer mailed to me, requires memorization of large amounts of information and doesn't allow notes on tests which I'm unable to take anyway. If you can take this class for no credit it might be worth it but otherwise it's unreasonably harsh.
When I took Professor Sasse online, I had to double a substantial amount of effort in his class to the point I was studying three hours a day. At the end of the day I felt very confident in comprehending the info, and I still fell short in his exams. The whole class was on the brink of failing. I was lucky to stay afloat at a low B. Dont take.
Mr. Sasse's curriculum is well-paced if you're good at self-studying (doesn't mean that you can't occasionally procrastinate- depends on the material being covered). He has lecture videos in 15min increments and with a textbook on the same material. He references the text a lot in the lecture, so I recommend using both resources. 2 mids and 1 exam.
I won't take any classes at DVC after taking a class with this professor. They don't care one bit about your academics, all they want is to take your money and drop you from classes without telling you or explaining, much less a refund. Don't bother with this class, you'll be randomly dropped and the school will say sorry support wasn't helpful.
Absurdly strict grader. You WILL get poor grades on your homework and tests because you weren't extremely specific in your answers to the poorly defined questions that he gave you. He also requires you to install spyware onto your computer to take online tests. Doing assignments in this class is like walking the Bataan Death March.
If you have a choice DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Although the curriculum is interesting, he is a ridiculously tough grader who expects you to memorize every detail of the reading and almost no one does well on the midterms. He also has you install spyware to take them. I had to drop this class because I knew I would fail.
Your grade is made up of 3 exam grades and a cumulative final with no opportunities to raise your grade outside of those. The course is filled with more information than is necessary in an introduction class. All exams have multiple essay questions and a very limited amount of time to answer them within. He thinks he's teaching at a UC but he isnt
I made the terrible mistake of choosing this class for the summer. The professor expects you to memorize absolutely EVERYTHING for all the exams and the final is cumulative, even though he's fully aware that the summer semester is short. Part 3s of the exams are essay answers that are difficult unless you spend hours memorizing everything.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class. The bad reviews are accurate, trust me. I am an A student and this class completely ruined my GPA and my mental health. There is no way you will have a good grade unless you get the max points on ALL of the exams. He expects you to answer questions as detailed as possible and memorize everything.
Sasse was one of my favorite professors of all time. He remains so even after transferring and graduating. His classes are challenging in the best ways and should only be taken if you enjoy learning and seeing the world with new eyes. I had to do Yoga before each test to calm my test anxiety. It mostly worked.
The exams are extremely harshly graded. You need to list every known point on a certain matter to have a chance to get full points for a question. I believed I did pretty great on the first exam, and even after getting a C (I thought I was going to get an A or a high B) this score was apparently higher than the average. Be prepared to study a lot!
This is not an intro class. He expects UC and professional level answers, without teaching those skills. The majority of his class will fail, by no fault of their own. Once the class bombs their exam, he'll say 'he's prepping you for college'. Don't take him, he's not a intro teacher!
He is an effective teacher and his lectures are interesting to listen to. The class involves a lot of memorization of small details, but he does tell you what will be on each test so you know what to study. The homework is not graded, but it is helpful for studying. If you have trouble with memorizing details, skip this class.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He is very passionate about Astronomy and it shows in each and every one of his lectures, and listening to him talk feels like watching a science professor in a movie give a lecture. There is a text book, but it's not required. He only grades quizzes and exams. Thanks for a great semester Professor Sasse!
I had him for 110 in person, and 130 online. I missed a lab for 130 and the next day I went into class for 110. During lecture he turns his head to me, looks me dead in the eye, scowled, and angrily said "which you would know... IF YOU DID THE HOMEWORK." Which I turned in that day and still got an A. So rude, unnecessary, and unprofessional.
If you care about earning a high grade then take the positive reviews here with a grain of salt. It seems most who left good reviews have low standards cuz most are about his personability, which is subjective and doesnt affect how I perform. His lectures are disorganized and lack the vernacular & tools required to convey the topics of the course.
Paul is an awesome guy with amazing lectures (in person, at least). By recent ratings, looks like he doesnt transfer well to an online platform. My favorite professor of all time who gave me a serious interest in Astronomy. That said, the reviews who complain about difficulty are correct. He grades like he's teaching at a prestigious university.
He always talks about how hes difficult cuz hes preparing you to transfer to a top school. Which is crazy cuz not everybody is there to go to a top school, or even transfer for that matter. Not only that but thats an unfair comparison cuz his teaching is not on par with professors at that level. His teachings messy and not really good at explaining
The professor is terrible grader and will blame you for not understanding what he puts down. After ruining your life, he will claim that he is trying to prepare you for a UC. I would have appreciated if he had focused on his job a little more and try to actually help students instead of "preparing them for a UC". All in all, he is one of the worst.
I withdrew from a class so I could better focus on this class only to later figure out that he does everything in his power to not give As or Bs. He tries too hard to be a hard professor. Be prepared for a lot of the test questions to be those random frivolous details that barely even get their own sentence in a textbook. Except theres no textbook.
I've heard a lot of good things about Sasse's in person classes, but I did not enjoy his asynchronous class. The only things you are graded on are the weekly quizzes and the exams, which are proctored and pretty long and difficult. It's a LOT of information you need to memorize and if you don't do well on the tests you're basically screwed
A very good teacher that has a lot of knowledge. He gives outstanding lectures and explains all the topics in a very easy way. He is a tough grader, but you can be late with the weekly homework with penalty. Prof. Sasse always tries to understand his students. However, I must admit it was A LOT of homework and studying just for ONE credit!
I have no words. Really miserable class, and beyond stressful.
He does not want to see you succeed. He wants to see you struggle and fail. Toughest grader ever. He grades your exams like you are transferring to one of the top schools.
I dropped Prof. Sasse's class after a month. I took both 110 and 130 and found that he's simply a tough grader for the sake of being a tough grader, claiming that he's preparing you to transfer to a top school, but provides unclear lecture materials and criteria, is impossible to track down, and seems to be more interested in seeing you fail.
i have NEVER had a clas where all of us were failing/in the 60s range UNTIL THIS MAN. uncommunicative, very tough grader, lost literally most of all my points on essay questions with little to no explanation.
Professor Sasse is an amazing instructor, his lectures are clear, interesting and entertaining! He is extremely passionate and wants to see his students succeed. His class can be tough at times but if you pay attention he gives you all the information you need. He is easy to reach via email and will gladly help you with any questions you have!
Sasse is a very intelligent and passionate professor. You can see he knows so much about everything he is teaching. BUT be ready to WORK on this class if you want an A. I took this as a summer class and it made my summer miserable. He is an extremely tough grader, his exams are proctored and he reduces your points for ridiculous details.
Feels like he is grading by the amount of words you wrote in your hw. Also give very low marks for the exams. Almost nobody gets A
Professor Sasse's class is challenging, but using unstuckstudy along with the free textbook helps a lot. His lectures are engaging, and he genuinely wants students to succeed. Just stay focused, do the practice quizzes, and you'll do well. Overall, a tough but rewarding course.
I took Astro110 to fulfill my gen ed requirements because astronomy is awesome. Unfortunately, Paul's uncompromising grading style made this class a nightmare. He thinks he is preparing people for careers at NASA, and not the community college professor he is. I am still trying to get the sour taste out of my mouth when i look up at the night sky.
I love this professor, he is clearly very passionate about astronomy and knows his stuff well. If you're taking 130 his Laboratory class online he does give weekly labs, but be prepared he is a tough grader and by that I don't mean your CC difficulty grading. I mean UC level difficulty grading. Lots of work just for one credit.
I took this class as it seemed fun & interesting, but ended up being the worst class I've ever taken. I just withdrew after receiving an 8/50 on the 2nd exam. As an 'A' student my whole life, his grading is extremely discouraging, & seems like he takes points off for not answering exactly how he'd answer. Don't take this class. You'll be miserable.
He had weekly quizzes and only a few assignments and discussion boards. This class had four exams but each having 2-3 parts on it. His exams are proctored using Proctorio. Exams are difficult and very discouraging as the class average on exams were F's. You really need to watch the lecture videos closely and be prepared to STUDY.
Professor Sasse is, by far, one of the best educators out there. This was a very difficult class but if you are in a STEM field, do NOT miss out on this opportunity. I went into the course not knowing much, and left feeling able to tackle anything. Was he a tough grader, yes, but the reward is far greater than whatever struggles you may have!
Very exam-focused. Weekly quizzes contribute little to your grade. Lecture heavy and he assumes all students are transferring. He's also very discouraging to students who don't do well on the first exams and offers no extra credit to try and boost your grade if you struggle with the material. Overall not a good experience, glad I got through it.
Thought it would be an easy course but I was so wrong. Your grade weighs on quizzes and exams, very hard to bring your grade back up when you go down. The Prof. literally said that you should expect to get a D in the syllabus; that should've been my first red flag. You have to know every single constellation by the first exam w/o notes. Very hard.
If I could warn you about one class not to take, ITS THIS ONE! The professor is an extremely tough grader with little to no support. He blames failures on “preparing you to transfer” and is dismissive when you ask for help. I've never failed a class before, and I've spent more hours on this one than any other. DO NOT take this class.
I would have loved this class if it weren't for his harsh grading.. the lectures are very fun to watch and easy to learn from, but the tests are way too hard for what we are learning - the average was usually around a 50%. I felt I had a great understanding of the class material yet my grade did not reflect it..
Disappointing. Took this class solely because I love astronomy. I loved learning the material and studied it purely for fun. Had to drop because he grades so unfairly - even if your answers demonstrate good understanding, he will give you the least # of points he can and not explain why. Would be a great class if it weren't for this professor :(
Do NOT take this class. The worst class I have ever taken in my college career. He grades so unfairly. Even if you answer his questions, he says you are wrong. Save yourself the time and money and don't take it!
this class is actually the worst. DO NOT take it.
It is the only class I've ever failed; it is not an intro class. He keeps saying his class prepares you for top schools, but most of us want to transfer to a regular public college, not a UC. DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS IF YOU TAKE YOUR GPA SERIOUSLY.
Just don't take this class unless you want to ruin your gpa and spend insane amounts of time studying for an intro course.
This class absolutely ruined my GPA. I have straight A's, and no matter how many hours I spent studying, getting a good grade with this guy is nearly impossible. It is NOT AN INTRO CLASS and is taught and graded like a prestigious school, which DVC is NOT. Save your mental health and do not take this class, please.
Very very challenging professor. His online classes are way too hard, don't know about in-person. The only reason why he has a moderately high score on RMP is because he used to be better and there are earlier reviews making it high. Look at every recent review here and 90% modern ones are bad. I am begging you not to take this class.
His long answer questions for the midterm, final, and homework are very confusing. He always wants extra explanation out of the question itself, which makes the grading unfair to me. And it is hard to "guess" what aspect he wants students to answer about, more than just using a sentence to answer the question itself.
He is an extremely picky grader. Kinda feels like he knocks off points for the sake of it. He even has a video talking about how he failed a college test so he wants to normalize getting failing grades and tells us not to feel bad when he fails us.
If you choose to take this class, just watch his lecture videos
Listen, he's not a bad person. If you watch the videos he provides on Canvas, you're set for life. But if you attended the lectures, it's not helpful.
