Seems to perfer to be difficult...offers no help at all......
You have to study!!! Study the old tests he gives you, and GO TO CLASS!!! Dr. Sattler can explain the concepts very well; its just hard material to grasp.
Study your face off. Then study some more. He plays favorites. But suck up and you'll do fine.
This professor is very hard... He does not offer any help or extra credit... His jokes are lame and repeated often. I was not pleased with the way he made his tests from memory...
Very hard teacher. Confusing! Tells you to study 24 hours in a week for his class! Yeah right! Not happening! anyway he gives three things to study from. powerpoint, handout notes, and book. All are completey different and have nothing in common! Never know what he will put on the test! Doesn't give extra credit. Acts like he wants you to fail!
Toughest teacher I've had in a long time. Doesn't care about average students. Flies through mind numbing powerpoints. Talks waaaaay too long in labs that could be done in 30 mins. Far too much material is covered for each exam. 1 exam=200+ slides. Only help is that he rounds close grades up. Ex, an 89 would be made into a 90 for a A in the class.
Yes, it's hard. but that's the nature of the class. it's the weed out class for the major. Sattler is very knowledgable, but will not spoon feed you. If you need help and let him know he will do all he can to help you, but you have to ask. he sees the class as a chance for you to prove yourself. do that in effort and grade and you're set
This man knows what he's doing. He is an unabashedly difficult professor, but he deeds to be dificult because BIOL 200 is a weeding out course. If you study (you can even get away with cramming for some tests) you can get an A. This man is incredibly helpful; his office is always open. Dr. Sattler may seem rough a first, but give him a chance.
Sattle is an extremely nice guy, decent sense of humor. He is very intelligent and knows the material. AS for bio 200, he needs to be tough because it just gets worse and of course he covers alot of material but that is because bio200 tries to span most of the groundwork
He's very intelligent and knows his stuff. He's very helpful outside of class, his office is almost always open. Lecture is kinda boring-the time doesnt help (7:50). He's a difficult professor but you learn a lot.
He'll make you know your stuff, but he'll give you all of the help you need.
Stop Whinning.... This was the easiest Biol class in LU!!!
Classes aren't designed to easy, but really if you study hard you should make an A. Take him if you want to really learn something. He's got a cheesy sense of humor. Yeah, 7:50 is rough but it's not really like you have a lot of options. Suck it up! he's a sweet, generous person who is almost always in his office and glad to help.
The class is not designed to be easy, but Dr. Sattler does everything to help you out. He posts class notes that are mostly filled out (and the completed ones after the lecture), practice problems, powerpoints, and previous exams on Blackboard. He gives helpful suggestions for studying for the exam too.
Dr. Sattler is very excited about his subjects and even though it is hard to pay attention so early in the morning, I loved the labs and relaxed atmosphere (at least in his upper Bio classes). The labs were fun and he was always there to help. He answers promptly to an e-mail and is always in his office to help. His class is not too hard!
Great guy, great professor. He makes you learn the material, but he tries to keep it interesting even at 7:40 in the morning. You do have to study for the tests, but he honestly does everything he can to help you. He even had a review session the weekend before all tests where he went over everything that would be on the exam! Highly recommend.
All i can say is make sure you study study study..Dr. Sattler is very smart and it shows on his tests!! Tricky they are. Id say he is dull at times, and randomly energetic at others. Make sure you're a serious student when taking this one.
Never take this class expecting to learn the foundation of biology. Extremely hard and useless in understanding what hes saying.
Dr Sattler is great. The class is very hard because it is a difficult topic. The labs were great and a great place to get to know the professor. He is a great guy and will do anything to help you.
If you think 200 is hard, then you shouldn't be a bio major. Bio 200 is meant to weed wimps like you OUT of the major. I think Dr. Sattler is on of the best professors in the department. Professors aren't meant to entertain you. They're supposed to teach you. If you think he's boring, then you just can't appreciate his sophisticated sense of humor.
The Vertebrate Natural History summer course with him is phenominal! You really learn an enormous amount of material, and Sattler really does a great job. People in bio200 who've given him crap are oblivious of their own inability to study biology material. TERRIFIC TEACHER, with a lot of dim students.
Dr Sattler is AWESOME! I took BIO418(summer course) and loved it! Ive learned so much!Really hands on course. Lots of slides and info to know but very useful! I also had him for BIO300 which was challenging but Dr Sattler knows what he is talking about and is def there for you when needed!! Great guy take any course with him! Hes my fav!! :)
His teaching isn't bad, he's just pretentious and annoying. Who ever says his humor is sophisticated is probably some homeschooler who finds joy in sucking up. His humor is old and flat which nobody finds funny except for maybe your grandmother. He thinks he's tricky, acts like he doesn't have time for you, and probably has a horrible gene mutation
"What's the name of Tonto's horse?" He seems to be nice at first but later on you'll find out it's nothing more than show. His humor is out of date and his ability to keep your attention is equivalent is not very good at all.
Dr. Sattler is intelligent, knows what he's talking about, and makes sure you do to. He has a dry sense of humor which I guess only some of us appreciate. He makes you think, and for that he is a great professor. Study hard if you want a good grade, his philosophy is 2 hours of studying per hour of class time, and it shows on his tests.
Make no mistake, Paul is a very tough professor. If you are going to take a class with him be prepared to put alot of time into that class. Despite all this, I stil think he's a good professor. He knows his field very well and explains it pretty well also. As others mentioned he does have a very dry sense of humor.
Dr. Sattler is an interesting professor. He is helpful and gives great powerpoints so you hardly have to write anything down in class. Most importantly though, he is the king of sweatervests. If you take a class with him you will learn to hate the phrase "two of the above" on the tests. Study a lot.
I dropped this course because of my inability to comprehend the material. However, Dr. Sattler is a very helpful and extremely friendly man! I wish I could have learned the material just to take his classes. He's very organized and has a nice sense of humor. I think he's great!
Easy class, he will answer ALL of your questions until you fully understand the material. HIGHLY recommended!!!
This class had a 50% fail rate. i learned a ton but averaged about an 80 on exams. He was a great prof in the lecture and in the lab. i will def take him again in the future.
his class was rather challenging and a little boring at 7:40 in the morning. study the notes and powerpoints a lot and you should be fine.
I had my first biology class with this prof. So. Freakin'. Awesome. Attendance is not mandatory but he remembers EVERYONE, whether you come to school or not... so be good and go to class. Valuable asset if you're planning on research or grad school.
Awesome teacher when it comes to small groups and one-on-one sessions. However, his lectures can get a bit boring, especially his 7:40am class. But the labs and lab quizzes are usually easy though he spends too much time explaining the lab instead of just letting you read the instructions yourself. Great prof for Bio majors!
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! Dr Sattler is a great professor. He knows his material and is able to deliver it to his students clearly. He is extremely helpful when you are unsure of what to do and you dont understand. If you study, there is no reason not to get an A. Most students are lazy and hence fail the course and blame it on the professor. Goroma
Dr. Sattler really knows this material. This is good for students because you can ask him anything relating to the material and he will have an answer for you. This is bad too because his answers are sometimes hard to understand-he uses a lot of new terminology. Not good for a 7:40am class: it's kind of boring. BUT MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS!
This class was so boring!! I could not have been more thrilled when Dr. Brophy took over. Sattler was so uninteresting at 7:40 in the morning it was ridiculous. I think this is the one college class I fell asleep in. This was probably the class that made me change my mind about being a biology major. Try another professor!
Boring class. He loves to talk about the liver which he somehow manages to incorporate into each lecture. Took AP Bio in high school and it more than covered everything in the class so I didn't read the textbook at all, and I did fine. He posts prior tests and has a solid study session if you need it though.
Sattler's class was not impossible, but it forced me to study. I took him my first semester of college and did not expect biology to be that hard, but with him it was. The key to getting an A in his class is memorizing every little detail on the powerpoints, then you'll know what to do when you see 'two of the above on his tests.
Sattler is my favorite professor! Yes, his class is hard, but it's a weed out. Definitely know the powerpoints, but his tests also require understanding the material. STUDY! He's always helpful when asked questions, and he's a great lab instructor too. I'm just sad he isn't teaching Bio II!
I had high hopes when I entered the class, hopes that were crashed. His tests are what nightmares are made of. All multiple choice answers include:"all of the above", "none of the above", and "two of the above". Also he had us do Test 4 and the final on the same day.
Dr. Sattler is a very intelligent man--he really knows his biology stuff. Anyone who takes him will have to study their brains out, because every detail matters. He taught me a lot about how to prepare for a difficult test. Also, he references a LOT of science fiction movies... star trek anyone?
This guy is very intelligent, but a teacher? No. His lectures/labs are very hard to follow because he talks about things that seem totally unrelated in the middle of explaining something. The connections he tries to make between two topics makes no sense. He doesn't have the teacher
Both paul and gene sattler are great professors they are great at explaining concepts and both are kinda funny too. If you take these guys its not hard to get atleast a B, A if your really really study
Great teacher, but the class was very hard.
Dr. Sattler is not a very good teacher at all. I had a concussion and he was very unhelpful when it came to me making up work. He wanted me to take a 4 chapter exam the day after I was cleared to come back to school! His tests are super hard and he lacks clarity. Avoid him at all costs!
I had to drop his bio 224 class due to extremely hard tests. I emailed him and he flat out told me that it was impossible to get my grade up and that I should just drop the class.
Seems Professor Sattler has gotten some bad reviews. Heres the thing. This class (along with basic Chem) is the absolute basic fundamentals to all science. You are going to work for it. Get a study group, read the book, then study some more. I along with the 9 people in my study group all passed with an A, so its possible. You determine your grade.
Paul Sattler is an excellent teacher, however, he will admit that the class he teaches is challenging. Although this is true, the class can be passed as long as the student studies on a daily basis. Dr. Sattler is known to be a bit dry, but if you love the subject you will enjoy his lectures. Work Hard and Study Hard for the desired grade.
Dr. Sattler can be a bit dry at times, but is extremely eager to help. He is also very understanding with any extraneous circumstances that may arise and actively tries to help you pass. Definitely a very godly man with an extreme passion for seeing his students do well. I definitely recommend him to anyone taking BIOL 224.
Extremely difficult Professor. Avoid it all costs.
It's definitely not UNIV101. Personally, I hate the teaching style. Maybe it's because I was in the 8:15 lecture, but talking for 1.5 hours straight and absolutely FLYING through the power points didn't help me to learn. If you're good at memorizing, you'll do fine.
This class is designed to be a wred out course at Liberty. If you have taken AP bio then you should be fine. Most students get upset at the difficult exams, however, it's not just this class. Every biology class will be like this. Memorization is the key to everything in biology. If you can recite the PP's you will get an A in the class.
He is very difficult and is over Bio 224 to make or break you!
He is a great professor! The class is 100% lecture so be prepared and the only grades that you have will come from 5 exams, the lab, and the final. His lectures are extremely fast, but he does convey the information clearly. It goes without saying that this is a challenging course so be prepared.
Professor Sattler is fantastic! This class (Biol 224) is not easy, and it really distinguishes between those who can manage their time and those who can't (ie. if you try to cram to do well, you will have a difficult time). But as a professor, he is amazing. He teaches clearly and efficiently, and makes the information interesting.
Dr. Sattler is an awesome professor! Beware though, this is probably the hardest class you have ever taken and will take until genetics! When he says 40% of the class will drop or fail, he is serious. Yes I got an A, but I worked like a dog for it!
Dr. Sattler easily became one of my favorite professors. Having him as a professor I really began to see science through a biblical perspective which made me appreciate my learning experience more especially during FR yr. He's really eager to help you if you ask him and he holds exam reviews which are extremely helpful. I ABSOLUTELY recommend him!!
Had Professor Sattler for bio 224 and it was way harder then a general bio class needs to be. His lectures are not very interesting and this class relies heavily on tests, so if you can't pass the test(which most people don't), you'll have a tough time passing the class. I did enjoy having Sattler for lab, he is a very kind man. Poor teaching style
Dr. Sattler is quite knowledgeable on Biology, but presents the material in a poor manner; the PowerPoints often had errors in chemical spellings, and grammar--the PPTs were wordy and confusing at times as well. He seems to be more into the subject than the students, though that is just speculation and should not be taken for absolute truth.
Dr. Paul Sattler is the least clear professor I have ever taken. He gives assignments without much instruction at all and expects you to know exactly what to do. Good luck!
Dr. Sattler is very knowledgeable in his field. The lectures are not very interesting, but you will learn a lot of information(even though it is sometimes unnecessary). Definitely go to the review sessions, and go to office hours. He wants to help!
Sattler gives everything you need: his powerpoints, fill-in notes, past exams, and study guides. Just put in the work to study and you can definitely get an A. The tests are off the powerpoints 100%. Sattler cares; he just wants you to study. If you do, he is all for your success. Best Bio 224 prof. He curves the class slightly at the end.
Dr. Sattler is great and very knowledgeable about biology! The exams are a bit tough but they are based completely off of the slides; you just need to study!! He holds extremely helpful exam review sessions and is always willing to help out students with the content after class or in his office. Biology is tough but Dr. Sattler teaches it clearly.
Dr. Sattler is a kind, intelligent man who clearly knows what he is talking about when it comes to Biology. However, his teaching style just wasn't for me. Also test days are a disaster. You'll use the study guide, pour over his presentations, and read the assignments only to find barely any of the material you studied for is on the test.
The class was very difficult to pass, and though the professor was available outside of class, he mainly read straight from the slides. The material was hard to understand.
definitely one of the worst professors I have had in my college career.
I had Dr. Sattler for lecture/lab. Don't listen to what everyone sayshe is an amazing professor. Yeah, lectures are boring as crap (if you don't get his dry humor), but he is a sweetheart outside of class. His exams are essentially mirror copies of the practice exams online, which NO ONE actually takes advantage of. Go to office hours! He loves it
Professor Sattler is a very good teacher who cares about his students. He is always available to help and gives you all the material needed to succeed. Its really up to the student to study to get the good grade. Although its a difficult class, he teaches it well and has a review session to help his students on the exams.
The lectures were hard to follow and the professor would go on rabbit trails during the lecture. He was very difficult to follow along with and would recommend him to be replaced with a more competent and versed teacher, someone who communicates the required information better and has a reasonable flow to their lessons.
Had him for BIOL-224 lab. His quizzes are hard to study for every week, and he's pretty particular on what he wants for labs. Sometimes what he asks for is confusing, but he's willing to help if you visit during office hours. Not bad.
I failed the class once and want to give advice. Sattler is so knowledgable and the best lecturer you will ever get for 224. But, his exams are a killer. You absolutely have to study and study well. I literally spend every single day in the library after classes just to get As or Bs in the class. You must study and ask for help at office hours!
Professor Sattler is a very kind man who wants the best for his students. However, his tests towards the end are merely impossible to get above a B on and I studied day and night for days. In lab he is very helpful but his quizzes are absolute killers. If it weren't for the quizzes I would have passed with an A. Overall, he's a semi-okay choice.
Professor Sattler is very knowledgable about the subject. He lectures the entire class from start to finish. I would recommend taking notes on what he says in addition to his power points. Stay on top of the material because he moves fast and you will fall behind.
Prof. Sattler is a nice guy and the questions on his tests aren't even that difficult, there's just so much content to know and memorize that makes it difficult. You definitely need to study a lot in this class. He also just reads over his powerpoint in class, so if you're expecting actual teaching aside from that, don't.
Dr. Sattler seems like a kind man, but his lectures were extremely dry and hard to get through at times. You definitely need to study to prepare for the exams, but if you put in the effort you will do just fine.
The worst prof I have ever had. Liberty University has sucked the Jesus right out of this man. He is very cold, terrible at lecturing and it just seems like he doesn't want to be there any longer. He states that he is willing to fail students because it is a weed out class for bio med and nursing students. Take another Prof, save your GPA!
If you're in add/drop week, DROP THE CLASS and take it with someone else! Sattler is a great guy out of class - but not in class. His exams were outrageously tough, and kept adding new material to study. He literally said that he made the tests harder because too many students were getting good grades, using the logic that this is a weed-out class.
Sattler gets a lot of bad rep for two reasons: 1) people who come into his class are generally the people who dont have to study for tests and 2) hes a bit of a dry lecturer. HOWEVER, Sattler gives all of the powerpoints and study guides you need to succeed in his class. As long as youre willing to actually put in the effort, hes a great prof.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. While he does provide all of the information, he does not explain what is important or go into depth about how things work. He purposfully makes exams more difficult if the class average for the previous exam was anything above a 65%. He is very discouraging and clearly does not care for his students.
Dr. Sattler is a very dry lecturer, that's my biggest complaint. It was hard to pay attention through over an hour of lecture and he didn't really make it fun. I had him in fall 2020 and he would call people out in the middle of lecture for drinking water bc they took their mask off to do it, and then rant to us about wearing them... was not a fan.
Professor Sattler is a nice person but when it comes to exams he is brutal. Unfortunately, he acts as though we are at the same level of intelligence as he is when writing an exam, thus making the hardest part of the exam trying to decipher what his questions even mean. If you are unable to break down what he is truly asking you have no chance.
Dr. Sattler is a nice man, but his lectures are very tough to sit through. He only reads the info on the slides, rather than explaining in detail. He pulls the smallest little things from each chapter to test his students on. The fact that the class averages for this semester stayed around 57 or less should be a concern. Be prepared to study a lot.
I have never failed so much in my life taking his course. Take someone else or go to the cvcc to get this credit!
Dr. Sattler's class is very hard to sit through and his exams are very difficult. It is a weed-out class but i never expected it to be as difficult as it is.
Dr. Sattler is a really good professor. He is very knowledgeable and available to help out his students. There is a lot of material and the tests can be hard, but he offers some extra credit opportunities and is helpful during office hours.
Difficult class, but Dr. Sattler gives all the information necessary. We are given the lecture PowerPoints, and everything on the tests is in them. The bad reviews likely don't usually have to study, or simply didn't study the PowerPoints like Dr. Sattler instructs. He even provides practice exams from past years so you can see his exam style.
I had him for lecture and lab and he is an awesome professor. Tests can be difficult, but are generally very doable if you study well and know the material. He also provides plenty of resources such as previous tests, powerpoints, and he gives reviews before every exam. I highly recommend and he was definitely my favorite professor last semester.
Look y'all. If you want to succeed do two things. Read the slides, and look at last year's test. The material is VERY dense, however he says it himself, he only puts things on the test that are on the slides. All the tests are multiple choice. Do not buy the book. You don't have to pay attention in class. If you memorize the slides, you'll do well.
Had a lot of trick questions on his tests and his slides were confusing. Told everyone that most people fail his class.
I took Dr. Sattler's class as an incoming freshman and was not prepared for the difficulty of this course. Attendance is required but it's almost useless to go because he only reads off the slides. His tests are extremely confusing -multiple choice, but has options like all of the above, none of the above, or two of the above. Would not recommend.
Despite the reputation that for some arbitrary and baseless reason exists that he is anything less than excellent, I love Dr. Sattler. I enjoyed his class daily and if you make sure that you are staying on track with the course, you will do well. There is a lot of material to know in general, so you have to take some personal accountability.
He mostly just teaches off the slides and it did not feel very effective. You have to take a lot of time to study and understand the material, which I did, but even I failed to keep up, and I have excelled in my other upper-level bio classes since taking his. He also was not very encouraging right before the final exam, not the most understanding.
Dr. Sattler is disliked by a lot of people mainly because he is more sardonic, but if you learn to not be offended by how acerbic he is, you'll realize he is an amazing professor who has an incredible wealth of knowledge to offer. He is also actually interesting and funny if you care to look past the general populace's opinion about him.
Dr. Sattler was constantly discouraging the class by telling us that "this is a weed-out class", "most people here will fail" etc. He does not have an understanding disposition and his tests had lots of trick questions. Take a different professor for this class or take it at community college.
During lectures, he only reads from a terribly disorganized powerpoint, and is extremely monotone. At the beginning of the course, he claims that only 50% of the class will pass, and he has had students take up to 4 times. The only points come from 5 exams (exams are also disorganized) and offers little to no feedback for wrong answers.
All the material is presented through boring PowerPoint lectures. Not very engaging. Tests are also quite difficult.
He is such a nice guy, but I learned nothing from his lectures. Be ready to learn everything outside of your class period!
He is extremely clear, and lectures well; however, he can drag on a bit, and will not budge on your grade. Overall, he explains the lab well, has a fun sense of humor, and is a really great guy!
Never take Sattler. His lectures were incredibly dull and poorly structured. He would belabor the obvious and simple information and fly through complex topics. Also, Sattler on multiple occasions openly bragged about failing students. Outside of class is demeanor was rude and smug. His behavior was unprofessional and un-Christian.
Sattler is my all time favorite professor. He was lecture heavy BUT I took him for lab as well and had the most fun in the whole world. He was always encouraging and there to listen and answer any questions we had. He is patient and so personable. I would take him a million times if I could.
Brags about how most of his students fail the course. Really does not care if his students actually learn
I loved being in this class, however it was so difficult because the lectures were fast paced and there was not much in the lectures that were on the tests. if you are to take it, establish a study group (of GOOD smart people) and you'll hopefully pass the tests.
Tells students we need to study everyday for 3-5 hours. Lectures are so fast paced you can't keep up. Expect to teach yourself the material on his PowerPoints. After exams he lectures us on things we should know and brags how 60% of us will fail the class.
He truly is the most uncaring professor I've ever had. He teaches his lectures as if you already know the material and in the most unpalatable way possible. I'd recommend just about anyone else to teach the class... literally anyone else. Perhaps someone's grandma. If you like to learn, this guy will ruin that for you.
This class is exam-only, so you have few opportunities to improve your grade. The class is taught strictly using PowerPoint, and you have to know the ins and outs of every single one of them; otherwise, you will fail. The professor does not seem to want to help you pass. He will laugh during exams because he knows everyone is struggling.
I had to change my major because of this class, lowkey killed my passion for biology too. He is extremely demeaning to anyone who isn't a science related major, and tells students they won't pass the class. The way his tests are worded is absolutely absurd, and made to trick students. Honestly, I'll have to drop out if I have another prof like him.
Get ready to fit as much boring lecture as possible into as small a time as possible then get a poorly worded exam designed to trick you. He constantly talks down on anyone that isn't a biology related major and has said in class that his goal is to weed people out.
The lectures can be dry, but using resources like the textbook, study groups, and tools like unstuck ai helped me stay on top of the material. Tests are challenging, but doable with consistent effort.
Dr. Sattler is definitely a very tough professor. In bio224, the class grade is made up solely of exam grades and the occasional 2 points of extra credit. It's a lot of detailed information, but if you study hard, you'll pass just fine.
I only had him for lab, which for bio 224 is pretty easy so he didn't really do much but was helpful when needed. I probably wouldn't take him lecture as I've heard he's not the best but for lab he's a good professor.
Dr. Sattler will try to scare you on the first day of class. His intention is to save you time if you are not cut out for STEM. Accept he is doing it for your own good and listen to his advice. Besides that, get ready to buckle down and study. He only pulled exam material from lectures, and the practice exams were great. He knows his stuff.
