He usually asks one or two tough questions on each test. Not really trick questions, but you have to put some thought into it to get the correct answer. You need to keep up with all the reading too, don't fall behind. He is pretty damn funny too.
I took 201 first. I thought it was easy. having had 201 I knew a lot of the stuff taught in 105. Schroeder is the best lecturer I had at WCC. Tests and quizzes hard for some but if you study they're easy.
He will not help after class, and he is on some weird ego trip so that he thinks he the sh*t. His quizzes are really hard to follow and he preaches about and directly from the bible. He also makes **** remarks quite often. STEAR CLEAR!!! :(
He will make you think, if you do all the reading you'll be fine. If you're stupid and you know it then take an easy class like ceramics or art

really, Really bad.
Kept the class interesting with videos and lively lectures. If you don't like classes that REQUIRE you to read every page of the textbook(which isn't too much) in order to do well then this class isn't for you. Otherwise, this class should be a breeze.
RUDE! memorize the first 1/2 of your texts for the midterm, last 1/2 for the final. Completely random. Tests are all one format. He refused to help me & REFUSED TO RETURN THE TEST. I wanted to LEARN from my mistakes. But he says the goal is to memorize fast, not to retain the info for later use. WTF
Very difficult tests, random questions. Class time interesting but not a good choice for me because I work full time and can not devote extreme amount of study time necessary for a good grade.
He is absolutely the best teacher I've had! Ever. He knows so much about anthropology and is passionate about the subject. His sense of humor is great. True, his tests are difficult, but you learn so much. Isn't that the point of school?
Most people were very upset that they didn't get handed A's, but I'm satisfied with my B-, and that I learned ALOT in that class, that will help me in future classes in all subjects, Shroeder was very straight forward, hard tests, the key to the class is READ THE BOOK!!!
very hard, very demanding - but fun. good sense of humor, will stay and help after class if you are not a moron. if you ask about things covered at length in class, he will be impatient. stubborn. keeps you on your toes. don't expect to do well without reading/studying. show up for lectures!
He is rude and very blunt. If you are an anthro major then go for it but if you are in this class to get a degree and really dont care about primates and the like then DON'T TAKE IT!!! Very challenging and tests are extgremely hard!
Tough but fair. High expectations for his students. Knowledgable about the subject.
Show up for every class, do all of your readings, and take notes or else you will not do well in his class. Other then that he is very smart, passionate, and knowledgable in his field. Lectures like he's at a university. weird sence of humor, kinda looks like Will from Will and Grace.
Good teacher, expects students to be there to learn and to want to read the book, don't take it if you want an easy class, great lecturer, very passionate about his subject, i cannot stress enough that you shouldn't take him if you don't have at least a passing interest in anthro
Learned a lot, just not the random**** on the tests.
Multiple choice tests. Spitting back his opinion to him. Massive egomaniac. Yeah, sounds perfect. Sign up today!
I love his passion for the subject and the fact that he has been to the places that he lectures about. Since I'm in his age group, I feel free to say that I find him "hot".
Egotistical, controlling, loves to see you fail. Too bad, because I looked forward to this class. He's the ONLY teacher without e-mail..just another control issue (doesn't want students to be able to e-mail their absence or papers to him).
This teacher inspired me to become an Anthropology major. I am at WWU now and whenever his name comes up we all say the same things..he was tough, he prepared us for our majors. If you want a nice teacher that will hold your hand like many of the other community college teachers tend to do: DONT take him. If you want to learn, he is your man!
He's way too impressed with himself. Napoleon Syndrome comes to mind.

Mr. Schroeder is on of the funniest professors I've had. You just need to break through the academic elitist exterior. His retelling of Homers Odessey was hilarious. His lecture is good and solid, he gives a steady stream of work, and he throws curveballs on his tests but if you do the reading you're set. Challenging but very good at what he does.
About the worst professor I've ever had. Every week, he gives these superhard word association quizes where your score is dependent upon your ability to read his mind. He is very unfriendly to students also.
I am just finishing this class and I honestly can say that I have been miserable the whole time. He has a way of making you feel like you know nothing even though you may be learning the subject for the first time. DON'T TAKE CLASSES FROM HIM...unless you already know everything there is to know about anthropology.
Don't take any classes from this man unless you want to feel like you are worthless.
Definitely a class where the teacher's personality overpowers the content of the course. Tests and quizzes are >>>extremely<<< difficult. If you don't read your texts often, you will likely fail. He seems arrogant and condescending, but he will help you out so long as you participate in class. Lots of lectures, notes, and work. Lazy folk beware!
He's a challenging Professor, but is a very good lecturer. Be prepared to study hard! Also, only take this class if you are an anthropology major.
Take Schroeder's classes if you actually want to learn something! I love his teaching, he is extremely enthusiastic about Anthro and has a great sense of humor about himself. Anyone who complains about him obviously didn't put in much effort. The tests are hard but if you study you will do well.
what an ****. don't take this class. arrogant is all I have to say.

Out of all honesty I thought he was an alright guy, I clicked with him as him with me, it was the testing that was awful. I learned a ton about the Ancient near east, but apparently failed to show that in my grade. I havent put so much work into an F in my life, oh thats right I havent ever had one before...
Fantastic teacher. Learned more in his class than any other in my school career. Definately has a passion for the subject.
This class has to be the worst class I have ever taken!! He will consistently pick on you and try to make you feel stupid. His tests and quizzes are unbelievably hard as to the point one cannot help but fail. they are RANDOM questions. If you have anyinterest in anthropology as did I it will all be gone by day two.
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. Is extremely condescending and unhelpful, definitely on an ego trip. Basically have to memorize the entirety of both required books- the sheer amount of terms and facts he expects you to recall is ridiculous. Will single you out and make you feel awful.
The man has issues; he is extremely condescending and arrogant. He loves to mock and humiliate students and seems to have control issues. He left me with the impression that he teaches for the ego trip, or status marker, instead of the desire or passion for anthropology. I would recommend taking this class from someone else.

I agree that it was a difficult class, but I learned more about being a student taking classes from him than any other in my college career. Everything was clearly laid out on the syllabus, I went to his office hours with questions and he really wanted me to get it. Get over yourselves, you are in school- so do it!
I find it interesting that people are complaining that this instructor challenged them to actually, gee I don't know, do the work. He says in the beginning that he more wants you to learn how to be a college student and move on to a university than anything else, so he structures his class around that. I personally loved it, and I learned a lot.
He has weird control issues, like a mentally challenged step father. He says he teaches in a University level, but I doubt that consists of treating us like ten yr olds. He is also kinda of creepy, I caught him starring at me a few different times.
Excellent teacher, but hard tests. Class is still passable even while failing all tests. Mr. Schroeder knows his stuff and enjoys teaching. Keeps class interesting and breaks up the monotony that can be a day of college classes.
What a loser! If you like snuck up teachers, maybe he is for you. Otherwise stay clear of this egotistical jerk.
First know that Schroeder is an archaeology person so that is what he likes to focus on. Do not get behind in this class! Tests are harder than quizes. Start your research paper early because there are no easy points--He seems to avoid giving full points on projects. Great lecturer, but=textbook must read, even tho varies in interest, notes help!
If you're looking for an easy class, don't take Schroeder. I never finished this class for personal reasons, but I'm retaking it because I loved the class and the professor. He is passionate about anthropology, and he expects HARD WORK from his students.
I really hope he is the worst teacher I ever have. The first day of class he threw a desk for no reason but to be dramatic, still it told us nothing of what we would be learning. Hes very rude, told two other students and I that we wouldnt make it far in school because we were sitting in the back of the class(the only seats open)DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Weird but in a benign way. He's very much an archaeology guy; Anthropology 140 is a topic he loves and it shows. He's strict but, I think, fair and is very clear about what his requirements are. People worry about his tests but I didn't think they were too bad. DO NOT procrastinate on the research project!
There are professors who are really passionate and love their teaching positions. And there are others who do it for egotistical/selfish reasons, who don?t really care about their students. If you really are interested in anthropology, take it from Reid. Schroeder needs to reevaluate the reasons why he chooses to teach.
He dresses like his in the 80's. haha He is extremely arrogant, and not very friendly. This makes the class very tense and cold, I was almost turned off by the subject, until I transfered to Western. He's never going to get tenure acting like this. He should take it down a notch.
What a joke! I plan to study anthropology, and was extremely disappointed by the lack of passion and total egotism this professor displays. He rather waste everyone?s time by trying to control and dominate the classroom then teach. Talk about Napoleon syndrome! If you are serious about this subject, take it from someone who is also.
He's one of my favorite teachers. Yea, he's a **** and he's totally egotistical, but at least he's funny. You're either going to love or hate him. Read the textbook, and take more notes than you've ever taken in your life, and ask questions and your life will be way easier. And the quizzes are HARD, but the exams aren't that bad.
Boring. Interesting subject, lame instructor.
Schroeder is dedicated to students who wish to learn at a college level. He is readily available if you seek him out. He offers extra credit and has a wonderful sense of humor with the students. If you take his class you will be treated w/ respect and fairness. Everything he teaches is avail to learn in the book and class notes.I recommend this clas
This teacher treats you like intelligent collge students. He's funny at times and serious when needed. Always available if you seek him out for help.Work is hard but fair. Everything you need to know is in the book and class notes. do your job.. he does a remarkable job as a teacher. You will walk away a better student and person.
this professor is horrible. he is extremely confusing, and very unhelpful. supposedly he is really good at anthropology, but archaeology is say NO. His tests are worded oddly and he picks out the weirdest things to put on his test so you will always fail. his class is pointless. never take it, i do not recommend it.
Um, this might have been the most bizarre college experience I have ever had, but he basically threw a desk on the first day of class for no reason that I am aware of...also randomly dropped f-bombs while going over the syllabus. It was strange...I dropped the class a week into the quarter needless to say and have not regretted it once.
If you're serious college student, don't take any courses from this guy. He should stick to teaching juvinile delinquents. For intellectual stimulation, take Reid or Coulet Du Ga.
If you have the time to dedicate to learning the subject--he knows the most about Anthropology than any other teacher at WCC. That being said, he makes sure you know he is in control. If you have a problem with this, don't take his class. I, personally, search out his classes and build my schedule around them. Worth the effort!
All the answers are in the textbook. Do your reading, take detailed notes, read the chapter again, then review your notes again before a test. Yes, it is a lot of work. But you will walk away a better person for it. Projects require a lot of thought and planning so don't procrastinate. Also, extra credit quizzes are given at random--be prepared.
He is awesome! Best sense of humour, fair grader, incredibly intelligent, but he does expect you to work. So if you're lazy, don't take a class from him, because you'll fail. Also, pay attention to detail in the readings, because his quizzes are all about the details.
Read the material and go to class. I found him to be weird. Stops class if anyone comes in late, mispronounces most people's names, doesn't listen to people. Basically wants you to think how cool he is because of the places/things he has seen and done.
Quizzes are hard and the questions are confusing.
READ THE BOOK
Ok, let's just get one thing straight: this is NOT an easy class. However, it is rewarding. Contrary to popular opinion I found Schroeder to be a funny, intelligent and overall nice guy. I can see how some people could mistake him for egotistical, but I assure you he's really not. Also has an impeccable since of dress; very professional.
So arrogant and loud! Tries to control the class room with intimidation. I get the feeling he was probably picked on as a child and now he's getting revenge.
Best teacher I've had in a long time. Teaches from the book and all his tests and quizes are from the book. You will need to read the book to pass and if you appear as though your not serious about his class he will call you out on it. However the gifts at the end of the year make it worth it.
people's comments surprise me. he doent seem like a jerk at all to me but def a tough class. the good thing is, you actually use the book you pay for! study hard & read every word in the chapters. he words questions wierd to confuse you which annoyed me, almost like he wants u 2 fail!looks like kevin from the backstreet boys only older. nice guy...
A pretty good teacher, not a easy one though. If you study and put work into the class you will get a good grade though. Most of the test questions are just re-worded from the text. Even still towards the end your homework makes up for most of your missed points
With Schroeder, if you just skim the textbook and don't pay attention, you will fail. He's a somewhat hard grader. I got an A, but he that was one of the hardest earned A's I have earned. HOWEVER, this guy is a great professor. He encourages class discussions, is interesting (meaning you'll pay attention), and knows a ton of stuff.
Not an easy class, but worth the extra effort. You have to read the book to pass this class. The tests are all about details from the book, and it is hard to know what to focus on because there is so much information. He is a fair teacher, and he knows his subject. I would take another class from him, but probably not with a full credit load.
The plus is this guy loves to teach and is very knowledgable in a wide variety of science. The negative is you get your leacture notes and the text book and that's it! Grades his test essay questions ruthlessly and in my opinion unfairly. His lectures are entertaining and will keep you interested but he really needs to provide extra study material.
Paul Schroeder is one of the best professors at Whatcom period. If you have a hard time in his class STUDY HARDER and don't make excuses or blame him for being tough. Challenge yourself to do well and you will be a better person for it, I know I am. :) GOOD LUCK!!!
He's an amazing teacher. Be patient with his grading, it may seem a bit harsh, but he's of a school of professors who break you down to build you up. This class was amazing! I had way too much fun, and took two more of his classes, which I also enjoyed. Not an easy A, but he makes you want to work for a good grade by rewarding you with fun prizes.
I loved this class even though I didnt do so well in it. His quiz quesions are worded in a tricky way but if you read the material thorughly you will do fine in his class. I have a lot of respect for this man and hope to learn from him again. definately reccomend to anyone who takes school seriously you will learn TONS!!!
i couldn't have asked for a better experience from this class. Schroeder is so passionate about what he teaches, he wants you to learn and get excited about what he has to say. loved the dramatic teaching method. made me excited to come to class and learn. no a jerk at all.
Here's the truth about Schroeder. If you want to sleep or coast your way through college then take a class from someone else. But if you want to learn from a teacher who gives a damn about you and what he's teaching... then you will never forget having taken a class from him. Archaeology is my first non A and absolutely worth it.
Going into this class, I was scared because of previous comments. After surviving two of his classes at once, I can say it is true that Schroeder is a very difficult instructor and expects a lot from his students, but if you are committed and want to EARN your grade, take this class. It's worth it. Just read the textbook and take notes as you read.
This class is awesome. If you have an interest in ancient cultures and the desire to learn, take this class. Lot of book work and as long as you read the books and show up to class, you will do great. I loved this class. =)
Great teacher. Warning though, he is tough and his tests are infamous. If your getting a C-B average on his tests than your doing about average. He definitely makes the class interesting
Paul Schroeder is a great teacher. My last class at Whatcom and I still have yet to have so much fun in the class room. Paul expects a lot from his students so listen well in class. read the book (especially all of the little side things and picture descriptions) and youll do fine. i meant to do this review a while ago but i was bored
When I think of a college professor, I think of Schroeder. Well spoken, well dressed, and clearly passionate about what he teaches! I always looked forward to going to his classes due to his exciting lectures and interesting rants. Although the tests are difficult, they're fair. I can't recommend him enough!
As everyone has said, Schroeder is a hard prof. He's not impossible. Tests are difficult. The midterm and the final both have a lot of material to them. He's interesting in lecture, knows what he's talking about and isn't afraid to say that he simply doesn't know the answer to a question. He's a favourite and I would take more courses from him.
The best professor I have ever had. Knowledgable, passionate, and his classes are the hardest I've taken. He pushes you really hard, but he wants you to do well. If you do not take your education seriously, you're probably not ready for one of his classes. If you're ready, you'll learn so much, and in the process become much more interesting.
Great professor, keeps the subject very interesting and knows what he is talking about. Expects a lot from his students, and want them to do well. Hardest class I've taken at Whatcom but worth it if you are serious about learning.
Prof. Schroeder is one of the toughest, but most engaging and interesting teachers I've ever had. By the end of the class I had an ungodly amount of notes and flash cards, but a very firm understanding of all the material covered. My word of advice would be read the book and then read it again and pay attention to the Schroderisms =)
Old school teacher. Rambles off topic and shows movies during class. Tests you on how well you are able to remember anecdotes hidden within the book. Test questions are confusing, horribly written and administered after a lecture on something else. He refers to "God" almost every lecture and alludes to how evolution is part of gods plan. Run!
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Rambles off topic constantly and does not cover the test material in class. Instead he expects you to scrutinize the book for random nonessential information not discussed in class. Constantly talks about god and is undermining the class on evolution by displaying his bias towards intelligent design.
I've graduated and transferred to other colleges and I need to say that my favorite instructor I've ever had is Schroeder. No other instructor is as passionate, fun, serious about student success and willing to help as he is. I am looking forward to taking other classes from him someday just for the heck of it. :)
I've gone on to get my masters and become a professor and it is a well known fact that Paul Schroeder's outdated and unprofessional way of overloading students is ineffective and harms student's progress in other classes. He blurts out "extra credit" questions during tests which destroy your train of thought, lectures are pointless and boring.
If you like reading an entire textbook several times in order to memorize every single word, table, diagram and picture then this is the class for you. If you like answering vague, poorly worded, trick questions then sign up. I screwed up and only read the newest reviews, which are lies. Check the old reviews for the truth about this teacher.
If you have a genuine interest in anthropology or you're an anthropology major you will find him to be challenging but fair. If you simply need to fulfill your GUR, take someone else. He's funny, knowledgeable, and fair, but like others have said, his tests and quizzes are ridiculous.
Translation for the review below this one: If you already know everything about the subject then you can pass this class. Don't expect to learn anything from Schroeder. That clown couldn't teach his way out of a paper bag.
He will drive you mad. I am a straight-A student in the Honours Programme at Whatcom, but I received a C in the class because he is such an awful instructor with high expectations for students still new to his subject. The best advice I can give you is to not mess up on the objectively graded assignments, because he'll get you everywhere else.
Ho Hum. Told a couple funny jokes. Mostly step-by-step lectures.
He expects your best work. The tests are tough & questions can be super specific. I am an Anthro major, so I'm probably biased, but I learned more from Schroeder's class than any other - because there's no way to slide by in his classes. He expects you to challenge yourself and give your all. Ultimately, it was a great experience taking his class!
Tests are very difficult but if you read the material a couple hours every day and take good notes you'll do just fine. The lectures are interesting and got me way into Near East culture. He's good at taking a bland and repetitive textbook and making it fun. I felt like I was watching a good show during his lectures.
