Horrible! Can't understand anything he's saying. Avoid at all costs!
the professor does not scale the grades
DANGER! The hardest midterms, finals, and LABS.Even the lab TAs think he's nutz!
Horrible
Assignments make me want to stab myself in the face w/ my pencil. Bad midterms.
Avoid at all cost, wait for denchev to teach a section. UNFAIR
Hopefully he will improve
someone this horrible at teaching shouldn't also be arrogant
guy cant teach, doesnt keep good topic, but would be funny guy to get **** with
did they ever see how he teaches before they hired him?
Hard to understand what he is saying, and a hard marker who gives hard exams.
turned me off economics
THE WORST!!!!!
does not know how to teach
nice guy ever seen and tough course ever taken
Ridiculous. getting out of econ

The worst prof at uvic, never take any of his courses.
Just brutal. Needs to be fired ASAP.
brutal. i hated that class. terrible teacher. nice guy though, CAN T TEACH
A very nice person, but pretty hard.
OMG!!. Toughest Teacher! Finals and Midterms are killer! but nice guy...
This guy must be fired from UVic! He's like a stop sign from high Econ courses! Stay away from this guy and go to Dong in the summer. It's the difference between an A+ and a Z!!!
Great Prof. Nervous at the first class, but only up from then. Sexy accent -- great mike! Math was OK. Should have studied examples before class... But very clear on the questions. Helpful and smart.
OMG!@!!!!!!TOO HARD
Nice guy but horrible, horrible teacher. Doesn't even create the appearance that he is smart. His English is also a serious liability to his lectures, something becoming increasingly more common among econ profs.
nice guy, hard worker, but sometimes it's not totally clear.
AVOID THIS PROF. Paul is a nice guy and he means well. I barely noticed an accent - his English is fine. Unfortunetly he may be nice, he may know his stuff, but he can't teach. He doesn't give you enough practice question to pass his exams.
Do not take 203 from this prof.
Great
Assignments, MId-term are easy...but sometimes in class I have no idea what Paul is talking about..
very helpful, many practise questions, very very good labs assignments

Great guy, takes a lot of crap for being too hard. If you're not able to do well in his class, get out of Economics. It's really not that bad, he's incredibly helpful and generous with his time. His final this year was questionable, but I like him
great guy. eventho the final this year was a bit difficult, he is a great teacher and is always willing to help!!!
Very willing to help student and also willing to improve his teaching skill. He is a great guy to know personally, even he might not give you the easiest questions for assignments and exams.
Paul is a very nice and intellegent guy. Unfortunatly Paul is not very good at teaching material. If you see him on Campus say "hi" but do not take his class.
Paul is a nice and smart guy , but his exams are very tricky.he doesnt know how to teach students.
Paul is very nice, and puts more effort into his teaching than any other professor I have ever had, unfortionatly he has very little teaching skill.
Paul's a great teacher who's tries hard to offer help and explain difficult concepts. His labs/tests are tough though.
Just so you know, all the recently-posted good ratings for Paul were done by one person. Paul is a great guy but utterly hopeless teacher. Ask 90% of people in his classes and that's what they will tell you. You wonder if he understands what he's teachi
Great teacher, makes boring stuff interesting...But u have to work hard for a good mark.
This course was not easy but somehow everyone managed to give his best shot and got a good grade. For myself, I've learn alot from this course, not just theories of finance, but also presentation and essay writing skills. Definitely the best finance cours
Good teacher, but he has a different style of teaching than other professors.
Horrible, regardless of what others may say. Don't risk your GPA by attempting to take his classes.
It is not his fault that the stuff is not easy. I study hard and understand what he is talking about. The classes are a big help.
We have got a small communication problem. Does not contact me as much as I like. When I really see him (I can bring my daughter, handy and funny) he is very occupied, but when he is not speaking with other people (by phone) I am VERY HAPPY that I visited him. He is very nice then and very helpful.
I've only sat in a few of Paul's classes...and I know that he 100% better than the teacher I have for Econ 203 Hui Feng...she is horrible...
Paul cares more about his teaching then any other teacher I have had so far in university. He puts in alot of effort and is always willing to take suggestions to imporve. I hope I have him for econ 204 next semester
One of the most enthusiastic professors you'll ever have. Will make himself available whenever you need him to make sure you 'get' things; tests are fair and with no surprises. If you're not a slacker, and you have some grasp of calculus, the course shouldn't be too hard. Bug him about pancakes too!
PAUL IS SOOO AWESOME! HE DOES EVERYTHING HE CAN TO MAKE THE CLASS FUN! AND HE IS SOO HELPFUL. DEFINITALLY TRY TO GET HIM FOR ECON 203!
Paul is a great teacher who really tries his hardest to help the students out and be fair in any way possible. I would recommend him to anyone as a good teacher for Econ 203
Paul is one of the most ethusiastic prof I have ever had. He puts his greatest effort in teaching and will try his hardest to make sure the students understands the material. I would definitely recommend him for students who are planning to study econ.
He was not even my actual prof. I had someone else....but he helped my anyways....most helpful teacher at UVIC.....although Isaw his tests and they are Killer, but he makes up for it, becuase he actually TEACHES!!!! and cares.
A very good professor, he steps everything through at a pace that slow enough that everyone can get it. Yay for Paul, but he needs to make his exams shorter...
oh my god, he is the worst Econ Prof I ever had in UVIC...he is the hardest among the rest!! I just wanna to get rid of this course ASSP!!! If you wanna to grad, don't take ANY econ course with this guy! He is HORRIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Paul is a good prof if you like a lecturer. You will hate him if you like a prof that makes you copy notes from the board all class. His tests are fair and the questions are straight forward. Final exam is much tougher than midterms. Very helpful and nice guy, open to q's in and after class. Easy B.
He's a good professor, easy-marker and easy-going. I like his quizes, but the final exam is a little bit hard. Anyway, really enjoy his class.
Paul was extremely helpful throughout the course. I visited his office several times and he made an effort to make sure i left understanding the material. The course work is hard but he made it alot easier.
just ok
He has changed a lot from his first years of teaching 203. He is a much nicer marker and an even better teacher. I found his class informative and would recomend this class to anyone interested in usefull economic classes
He is very helpful. If u take his class, u will really learn economics.
not impressed. He goes over the easy stuff first and makes sure everyone gets it and then 5 minutes before the class is over he gets into the hard stuff and never has time to finish. Bad time management.
Really needs to allow his students to succeed, as he sets his students up to perform poorly. The course could be more imformative and far more effective if Paul was more organized and focused his teachings on what is needed to be learned for exams.
Very good professor. Very intereting lectures. Since this course is not designed to be easy, students should work hard to get high mark. If student attend his lecture regularly, there will not be a problem to pass his course.
Paul is not very good at distinguishing between important details and the trivial. Makes you do long and tedious assignments that are not worth much toward your final grade. I would recommend the course, but not with him.
A very good prof. He made finance more interesting to me. Very helpful outside class, too. Highly recommended.
He's a very knowledgable person, but he doesn't translate the material to his students very clearly. He's always willing to help outside of the class time. He will get better explaining the material to his students as time progresses. I would say attendance is not essential for this course.
Very helpful and willing to meet students outside office hours if need be. Gives a great deal of feedback if you ask for it. If you have questions, he will patiently explain the answer until you understand. Poor ratings are from 203 students who couldn't hack the BA let alone the BSc
Super nice guy. Gives everything for students and really cares about making sure you understand the course material. Can still be a little unclear at times, but he's steadily improving. Bad marks are from lazy intermediatemicro students.
Very nice and helpful professor, he takes time for his students and makes sure that you understand everyhting. His tests can be challanging if not every bit of material was read. Overall a very good Professor, who is willing to take extra time to help students to imporve.
hes hot.
He is cute!!
Great prof. Midterms were challenging, so you better work pretty damn hard. But, overall it was a pretty good course. Prof schure is a really nice too, willing to help students and make compromises with the class.
Professor who is very willing to help. However can be quite jumpy in his lectures and unclear sometimes.
Very willing to help outside of the classroom.
He's a great prof who knows what he is doing and tries to prepare you well enough for the exams. Quizzes are quite hard if you don't work hard at studying. If his TA didn't suck so much we'd all have a better mark in his class.
Very good personality but not a great teacher. He's unclear, his lectures are boring and his TA was useless. Quizes and finals were very hard, probably hardest teacher for 203.
paul is a great prof. He is one of the most helpful profs i have ever had at UVic. Doesnt matter when it is, if you go to his office he will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Very hard course but i recommend paul for sure, work hard and get help when you can and make sure your TA doesnt suck!
Paul is a very nice person and a great prof. At the beginning, you probably will find the course is a little bit hard, but you will benefit a lot from it. Besides, Paul will offer lots of help. I have to say that I rarely see some prof. can work so hard for their students.
He's a very accessible professor, his midterm wasn't very fair but he made up with a good quality class, and the class project was really interesting. Don't take him if you want an easy class.
This is the best prof that I have ever had and I will continue to take classes with him for as long as I can.
It's a hard class, and so the assignments and exams are really hard. But his exams are fair. He doesn't test on anything you haven't seen before. Great guy.
Very nice and helpful teacher. Very fair in exams since he asks only about what has been studied in the class and the textbook and provide a good preparation.
ECON 454: Material can be difficult if you leave things last minute. A lot of information to take in, especially if this is your first Corporate finance class. However, Paul taught the class very well, his notes maybe a bit ambigious sometimes, he is extremely helpful and responds to emails on weekends, nights..etc. Great class!
Paul is great Professor. I like him a lot for his simplicity and readiness to help students at all time.
A genuinely nice guy who is always willing to help. He's pretty funny too, in his quirky way.
He does not care about students, and he is not helpful at all. He chooses to help people who he likes instead of students who needs help! He never replies emails or phone calls. Never got helped from his office hours!
although he's an extremely nice guy who tries to be helpful i had a hard time following his train of thought. difficult marker. his class isn't impossible but it can be frustrating if you don't understand his ways
Very interesting Prof. Throughout my University career I have never come across a professor that was so inclined to help you develop not only as a student but as a professional individual. His classes are not easy, but you should expect to become a much more well rounded individual with respects to presentation skills and writing skills.
Great prof. who is very helpful. If you study hard it is easy to get an A. The midterm and the final are not that hard. The examples befort the exam are very important.
Terrible prof. Notes are incomprehensible. His written English skills are poor. Midterms/Final ridiculously off-topic and difficult and worth too much of the grade. Avoid him if possible, don't say I didn't warn you. This is coming from an A to A+ ECON student btw.
Paul is a nice guy, but his teaching is terrible. His lectures are extremely difficult to follow because of language barrier, always makes things complicated. He knows the stuff but not very good at explaining. Not enough examples. Tests are off the topics and the notes are useless.
Lectures were directly related to tested material and always worth attending. Gave many examples of problems+solutions before each exam. Concepts explained in depth and more examples given. Because of this I barely had to study to do well. Yes he has an accent, but he's not at all hard to understand. It was a rushed course, but he did very well.
The course itself was an ordeal. The problem set was poorly written and took us days. Virtually no feedback throughout the course: we've waited three weeks so far for our course grades. The motivation for the course was an absolutely terrific summer school (which is where all his efforts went) that *almost* makes up for the problems with the course
Terrible professor. Team project was a joke, and his final exam was brutally difficult and not relevant to anything talked about in class or written in the textbook. His English skills are lacking; tests are poorly written. One of the worst Econ profs at Uvic, if not the worst.
Incompetence and laziness personified right here, folks. Garbage! Doesn't know how to write tests or design a course. Team project was a complete waste of time and utterly irrelevant. Notes/tests are nothing like the text, yet textbook Qs are the only practice problems he gives. Can't even avoid him; he's the only prof for 454 and 435, what a joke!
Paul really wants his students to do well. While the course material is difficult, he is more than fair in his marking (ie lots of part marks even if you don't get the right answers). Assignments are graded a lot more loosely to help boost your grade. Tough quizzes but doable. Biggest hurdle is the leap from the lecture material to quizzes is big
Paul excels as a prof, not only because he is efficient at teaching, but he truly cares about the performance of his students. Paul made sure that he covered every base in his lectures, and made sure all students were clear on material before moving on, and made room for high levels of class interaction. Tests were tough, but prepare you for 313.
Do not take any of Schure's Classes lightly - he likes to teach you the bare minimum and let you figure it out yourself. This is useful, however, for critical thinking skills, and leaves you proud of your accomplishments. I reccomend only if you have a light course load.
Prepare to be very disappointed. A helpful prof but doesn't know how to teach the course. The subject was very interesting but he cannot teach well and so, hardly anyone liked his class. Its a tough class too so him sucking at this course doesn't help one bit. CRAZY TOUGH CLASS
His slides are incomplete and only confuse the student further, and his answers to textbook questions and math problems take shortcuts and don't fully explain the logic or the method. He introduces concepts as if we already know them. The group project serves as a distraction from the more important textbook info. bad prof. wish Farnham taught this
The other people who have given bad reviews really don't know what they're getting into if they plan to go into finance. Paul sets the bar high to help you adapt more easily to the finance industry, and helps you grow into a more professional student. Best plan is to read the textbook before class, then you'll know what yo know for tests.
Well, if you ever want your final exam mark back then...don't take this class. Overall, it wasn't that bad if you understand basic finance. Study the examples in class. Also keep in mind that the 1200 word essay requiring 3-4 people is just odd.
People expecting the key 400 level course of UVIC's finance option to be a breeze really don't understand the point of school. Professor Schure's class isn't easy, but its application of classroom techniques to real world data is fantastic. Problems and exams are interesting and make you think; the project is a fantastic learning tool.
Don't take it lightly. This class is designed for people who can work independently. Studying is tough because of a lack of practice questions. This means you can't just memorize answers, and actually have to understand the content.
Find the textbook online. US version is fine. Paul's not the easiest teacher at UVIC in terms of content - but you're taking 400 level BSC focused econ, what do you expect. Fantastic class, learned a ton, super useful in office hours.
Make sure that you sit in the front or you can never hear clearly what he exactly talks about during the lecture. Although he does not teach so well, tests were fair and you could get a good grade if you by a textbook, and do the practice exam and problem sets very carefully!
The problem sets are TOO TOO difficult. However, it is a good practice for exams. I recommend that you always ask other people for help or work in groups when you do these assignments. The tests are not too difficult. Make sure you buy a textbook. He teaches unclearly and I don't recommend you to choose his class or you will be confused
Really hard
Although Professor Paul gives us terrible lectures almost every lecture because of his lack of pronunciation, explanation, and clarity, he is super helpful in his office hours. Also, his tests were really easy and marking is very fair. If you study really hard, I believe you will do well.
He is ok, marking is fair.
He 's really willing to giving help, but he sometimes can be so clear due to language.
Dr. Schure is a very good lecturer. He helps a lot in his office hours and is good at answering questions. His slides make the textbook unnecessary (never bought it). The problem sets (worth 2.5%) are are extremely hard. If you can do them, you will get an A in the course. After submitting the group work, try doing whole thing alone.
All I need to say is that u will find him speaking like yoda. Lmao im not kidding.
If you take the time to talk with him after class and in office hours, he will be more than willing to help you succeed in the course. He puts an emphasis attending lecture and the problem sets. If you work hard you will find the tests are fair and sometimes easy.
I really enjoyed Dr. Schure as a prof. He is a fair grader. I recommend going to the classes, you'll be left in the dust if you don't. He is very helpful during office hours and will make time to meet with you if you aren't available during them. He is a very reasonable prof, I'd take a class with him again.
Really nice and friendly guy but I found the course to be pretty boring. Teaching style is pretty barebones powerpoint notes supplemented by occasional equation examples on the board. Tests are quite reasonable, but following along in class can be a bit challenging. As long as you can get through the problem set questions you'll be fine.
frequently late, disorganized, wastes time in lecture. Often material that was discussed in lecture was not in the textbook, course slides are more used as speaking points thus making them not an effective resource for learning the course material. If you have to take this course I would recommend taking it with another professor.
He cares that you do well, but he can make simple concepts convoluted. Go to his office hours, and he is happy to help. His method of teaching would be more conducive to a more difficult course. Tests were slightly rushed, but in terms of difficulty, they were about as fair as tests could be without being easy.
Quit teaching!
Wanna get a good grade and passing the course. All you can do is, RUN (when you see his name).
So bad at his job its not even funny. Tells you to go home and "play with the problems yourself," and doesn't give clear examples of what he's talking about. Doesn't teach some material in class because he didn't get around to it, and says, "I'm going to expect you to know this on the midterm." Has way too much confidence in his teaching abilities.
easy class with very different exam
Nice human being, terrible professor. Should not be teaching second year economics.
Dr. Schure is in my top 3 favorite profs at UVic. He is very caring, the problem sets he assigns are excellent study tools for the tests, and I think the midterms and final were appropriate. If you don't understand calculus very well yet make sure you do ASAP, don't worry so much about lecture material but make the textbook your bible.
His lectures can be a bit scatter-brained at times but if you speak with him outside of class, ask questions, and do the required readings and homework you should do fine. He sets reasonable expectations and is always happy to clear up any confusion you have during or outside of class.
six tests and weekly online quiz
SIX super hard texts, lots of homework. The average score of 80 students in the two classes is 53. But he believes his test questions are not difficult at all, just because two or three of the 80 students got 102% after adding the bonus.
Six tests, class average is low and he didn't care. I sent emails to him but he only replied once.
His tests are super super hard and he gave us very limited time for tons of questions! He is the first professor I have ever met who required a meeting AFTER the finals, the purpose of the meeting is to grasp the knowledge of the course! And also required to keep notes after the final? It is just ridiculous, I dont want to see his face again
I believe Paul is underappreciated here. Paul is passionate about what he teaches and is very aware of world economic issues. Furthermore, he is open to questions and is willing to research when he doesn' have an answer to a question. Some find his class hard but its "money & banking", not creating writing. You will learn but the exams are tough..
Schure is a gem! He is flexible, accessible, and personal. Really passionate about his students and finance. The work is all clear and straight-forward, and he is always there to help you and provide support. Read the text and do all of the work and I promise you will grow and have a stronger understanding of the material!
Great prof, very knowledgeable. Some of the tests were brutal but all were scaled, no final and 6 evenly weighted tests, so good tradeoff imo. Great lectures, talks about a lot of interesting topics not covered. Always answers questions thoroughly and has class discussions. The first econ class I actually enjoyed and learned something applicable.
Paul is a very interesting person and is very caring except for the average lmao tests are brutal. His lectures tend to be very confusing and he tends to make VERY simple concepts VERY confusing. Your gonna have to teach yourself a lot. His test on present values was ridiculous. 6 difficult tests lots of Mylab work. Super fun to talk to though.
Paul is extremely smart and can explain any economic question to its complete end. However, this is often at the expense of blowing by course material which means that you will have to do a lot of studying via mylab, the textbook, and practice questions. Even if you do all the work paul will finesse you with insane test questions on certain tests.
Get ready for some of the hardest tests you'll encounter. Paul is smart and a very nice professor, but boy are his tests difficult. They are poorly worded which causes confusion and he expects you to be an absolute expert on the material that he's testing you on. It's very challenging to score high marks on his test unless you dedicate LOTS of time
Paul knows his material very well. This was my first econ class past 103 and 104, so many of the topics were very difficult at first. Although, I wanted to learn it so made it work. Paul does go on tangents and gives extremely challenging tests (sometimes). Sometimes he answers questions at a much higher level than the class may be at. Not bad tho.
Definitely a challenging course. Sometimes only gave 1-2 practice questions prior to some very difficult tests. However I'd heavily recommend studying the slides he posts/end of chapter Qs thoroughly. I wouldn't take this course if you have a heavy semester. But if you have a light(ish) semester its super interesting and I feel I learned a lot.
Paul is a nice guy and the course itself has interesting content. However, if you want to do well then you will have to spend a lot of time reading the textbook. His tests will incorporate material that was never covered. A couple of times he would not release the class average cause everyone performed so poorly. Definitely not an easy class.
Paul is intelligent and a nice person but he is awful at teaching. His exams are very challenging, only study material are the problem sets he makes. Questions are a level beyond what other schools require and the answer keys are incomplete, so you never know what's going on. This prof is setting you up for failure, avoid him.
Avoid Paul. He's a great guy, and willing to help during office hours if you need. However, you pretty much have to teach yourself. He doesn't give complete answers to practice sets or examples on slides. He will assume that you know more than you are required to to take this course. Tests are hard. The average this semester was in the low 50s.
While Paul is a nice guy, his teaching style is absolutely the worst I've ever had. We're three weeks from the end of the semester, and NOTHING has been graded and handed back yet. Answer keys to the practice problems were not uploaded until 5 days before the midterm (5 chapters) so we're left clueless. Expects you to know more than you do. Avoid!!
Probably the worst prof I've had in my 4 years at UVIC. He doesn't hand back projects or assignments and grades everything super tough. His lectures are all over the place with no structure. He doesn't give any review or practice tests before exams. Do not take a course with this guy. I heard he was bad, but he's almost worse than I expected.
Our final exam is in less than a week and have received no feedback on any of the assignments submitted throughout the semester. There are no practice midterms or practice finals and he chose extremely hard written questions on a midterm that covered 5 chapters in 50 mins. Avoid if possible.
Incredibly difficult assessment for a prof that doesn't really seem to know whats going on. It was almost like he was learning with us. Exam is in 5 days and we haven't gotten assignments back from October. This class is difficult but could be very useful for real life if taught properly.
Worst professor I've had ever at uvic. Unorganized lectures, no feedback or tips on what we should study (he says "everything and anything we've learned), and pulls out insane amount of questions for a 50 minute midterm. Grades for projects not bad yet at term end. Avoid at all costs.
Paul is definitely the worst professor I have had at Uvic in my 3 years at the school. He made things so incredibly hard for no reason. His exams were the hardest exams I've ever taken no question, and he pulled things we hadn't even discussed in class. I will never ever take a class with him again. I took the class with Betty and got an A+
Awful awful awful. I am two days from starting a new semester, and I STILL haven't gotten my grade for a project from OCTOBER. Final grade has not been handed back yet, projects not handed back, questions from textbook that we haven't discussed. Never take a class with Paul. The worst class I've ever taken in my life.
Had Paul for 203 and liked the way he taught it, so I took 305 with him. I am generally a decent student but this class gave me a really hard time. I thought that it could've been taught much more effectively. The course is test heavy, yet he provides very few practice questions with answers. Felt like I was in the dark the whole time.
Avoid if possible. Tangential lectures with a habit of including non-necessary content, only to say it is not necessary after he has spoken for some time. Difficult tests with particularly frustrating multiple-choice question style.
Paul is a nice man, but not a very good teacher. His tests are far too challenging and do not gel with how he teaches and presents the material. It feels more complicated than it should be.
Paul is a wonderful professor, he will answer any questions that you ask. He has a very deep knowledge, especially about stocks and securities. Paul is very willing to communicate with students in class and is also very willing to help them. However, be sure that you study metrials deeply, because the test is difficult.
Prof. Schure covers challenging material, but his deep subject knowledge shines through. Tests are tough, so be ready to put in the work - using the textbook, class slides, and Unstuckstudy can really help. Overall, a rewarding course if you're up for the challenge.
I really enjoyed my time with Paul. This course provided fair opportunity to achieve good grades, and he offered opportunity to supplement bad midterm marks. His classes are really what you make of them. Showing up with questions helps a ton. Would recommend.
