You have to take Foundations from him, it will change your life!!!
Excellent, excellent professor!!! Very thorough and explains everything, very enthuastic!! Take him any opportunity you can!!
excellent speaker, very charismatic, enthusiastic, and funny by far the most strict professor i've encountered in terms of attendance and tardiness, but his classes are far from dull and well worth showing up for
Great teacher! Enthusiastic, cares about his students.
He isn't hard but at times he wanders...not always clear-cut grades...make sure you suck up
Shrier is the man, his class was awesome altho on the hard side, take part in the SI sessions it will help a lot. An A is possible as long as you try

So much energy! Enthusiastic lecturer, but often get off-track. Don't mention hockey! Expects only the best from his students, which equals bad grades for some. But if you work hard, you'll learn SO much, and an A is attainable.
Has an interesting and unhelpful grading system. May like your stuff and still give you a bad grade. Try and take Foundations from someone else
Genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well. Make sure you ask him what he specifically wants for an assignment. Great teacher, very enthusiastic, gets off topic sometimes.
too busy with outside things. gets run down.
Doesn't make sense. His is difficult not because the assignments are hard, but because there is no flow to his class. Nice guy that challenges your thoughts but doesn't reward new ideas. Whatever he says in class rewrite in your papers word for word.
Paul by far cares for his students more than anyone I know. Although his train of thought is often interrupted and his class isn't the most informative, his life story and his passion for his students is worth taking him at least once.
Great prof. By far, the best professor I have taken here at APU. Very helpful and cares a lot for his students.
All I can say is that I am glad that I took this class. You learn a lot from the lectures and class discussions. Take him!!!
The WORST class I've taken at APU and there have been some bad ones. There have been lots of good ones too but this was definitely not one of them. Terrible teacher

Great class easy A if he likes you. Great to have a deep conversation with. He really gets to know you if you let him.

This is the worse class i have ever taken. He is uninteresting and gets off topic 90% of the time! If you get him transfer out!

Paul is a nice guy, who does care about his students, unfourantly that doesn't make him a good professor. I learned very little from this class, except for reading I did on my own. All of my classmates were counting the minuets until it got out.If you want to hear a cool life story, talk to him outside of class, its not worth the frustration.
I don't know what is considered "practical” about this class. He goes off on tangents for nearly a whole class period. You have to admire the man's heart, but it becomes inappropriate when that becomes the substance of the class. The out of class reading is good, if that's what you desire in a class. Very unorganized and doesn't use class time well!
Shrier is a great guy. He can get off topic, but he usually finds a way to relate it. It is an easy class and he really works with you. If you tell him his class is boring, he would do everything in his power to fix it. He loves his students and is a good teacher, just not in the same way that many other classes are structured. He's awesome!!
Nice guy. I enjoyed his class. He's very personable... especially if you work hard. He definitely goes out of his way to make a class like him. I liked the books we read for the class, but I wish his lectures would have been more related to the material we were reading about. He was sometimes unclear about what was going to be on a test.
I do not recommend this professor. He's a nice guy but the material isn't presented well enough for you to do good on the tests. He doesn't lecture on what you read, just quizzes you and tests you on it. It is a very confusing class especially for being a freshman level course. I give him credit for trying to keep it interesting. Take someone else.
Shrier is a cool guy and the work is a reasonable amount. He doesnt give a lot of homework, but he gives assigned readings for a quiz that is like once or twice a week. He lecture doesnt really catch my attention, but overall this professor is an easy grader and is fair.
Class started off well but ended with a BIG dissapointment. Ended up not getting such a good grade because i missed ONE assignment! There is virtualy no margin for error in this class. He also manages to make it seems as if he has the whole world figured out and talks about himself way too much!
Dr. Shrier is a great guy but a little scatterbrained (bless his heart) He can get off topic. Grades easily b/c the classes are HUGE. He has great intentions for the class but if you want to LEARN a lot, this isn't the class for you. His grading is based on reading assign., quizzes, and cumulative tests. He gives you an extra credit opp too!
Although the lectures are at times tedious and difficult to follow, Shrier does give out extra credit work. Do the extra stuff, and you'll get an A in the class. You also have to do all your reading because there will be a quiz - count on it every single day! Ask questions, be interested, and you'll do well.
I do not recommend this class at all. He is a very unfair grader and makes it difficult to succeed. I missed a few classes because of jury duty and he said if I missed one more he would fail me. I ended up with a C which is ridiculous in a freshman level course. If you have to make up a test in his class...DON'T. Like I said...he's very unfair!
Shrier is a nice guy Im sure but he really is a bad teacher. He is unfair in what he says because he is so scatter-brained. Very opinionated and wants you to be the same way about the same topics. It is pretty tough to get a good grade because his reading quizes are really tough even if you read thoroughly. Don't take it
DO NOT HATE YOURSELF AND GO INTO HIS TERRIBLE CLASS. He is an unfair grader. His quizes are hard even when thoroughly reading. When debated on a topic, he just ends by saying "You are wrong" and expects the class to submit to him. Do not take him if you enjoy life
Not as bad of a teacher as people make him out to be. He's a nice guy who has a heart for God. However, the class lectures seemed unorganized. His tests and quizzes are pretty hard. The difficutlty of the class isn't worth what you get out of it.
Wierd proffessor in beliefs, tests, and teaching.
Confusing at best, difficult to understand what he expects. No study guides... Only take him if you have to.
Really nice guy, really boring class. I definitely didn't learn much, and sometimes his beliefs were kinda weird...But the class is decently easy if you do the work. He wants his students to succeed for the most part.
shrier's an awesome prof. he's tough and you'll have to work your butt off to get anything at all out of the class, but it's definitely one of the more worthwhile classes i've taken and would recommend it to those looking to gain a real education.
Talks a lot. Has some really good stuff to say and gets you thinking, but often hard to extract important stuff from mumbo jumbo. Good guy, heart for God, but disorganized and unprepared as a teacher. Reading quizzes are difficult, but tests are easy. Participate in discussions-they really make the class. Doesn't notice constant internet use.
Very unfair prof. If he decides he doesn't like you, you'll get a bad grade. Also, I feel sorry if you have jury duty like I did during his class because he doesn't accept that as a valid excuse for being absent! I can't believe this guy.
Shrier is a character. Really great guy, loves what he does. If you need help with anything he will help you out. But he is boring, very boring. YOu'll learn the most when it comes to people's presentations, which is rad to hear other people's topics. Very caring man though, and many not so good jokes that you will laugh cause they are so bad.
He is a great guy. Very godly and nice. I was challenged in my faith through our class discussions and the stuff we studied. Class was well worth it. It wasn't easy, but if you DO THE WORK you can easily do well in the class. He is very personable and tells great stories. You're quizzed on the reading and you do well if you read, simple as that.
this guy is a terrible professor. he said a lot of nearly heretical stuff with very little foundation or support. i learned almost nothing in the class and felt a general sense of dread each week that i had to sit through 3 hours of his talking. avoid him at all costs.
I had Shrier for Christian Life. He did not follow his syllabus at all, and he didn't direct class discussions very much. Which meant a LOT of time was wasted on pointless debates.
I took Shrier for the honors section and it was a total embarrasment to the program. He treated us with blatent disrespect as students, had no idea what he truly excpected of us, yet still had the nerve to require us to complete several presentations and 10 page papers. He should absolutely never teach honors again and avoid him with your LIFE!
I had him for honors christian life and I thought he did a fine job. He allowed us to debate issues in class and he is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject. He graded easy to. Definitely challenged me as a k-12 christian school kid. I would recommend him and unlike some others who think so, he was by no means an embarasment to the program
Had him for Christian Life. Nice guy, cares about students, committed to getting you to act on what you learn. Frustrating as a prof because he was unclear, altered the syllabus, had unrealistic expectations, and you never knew what he wanted. You may find that you like him enough personally to overlook that stuff. If you work hard you'll be fine.
Have had Paul for 2 classes he is the teacher who has grown on me the most. He has taught me to think about Christianity and God in ways I had not done before. When I needed help he provided it which is great because I had a hard time understanding at first. also never judge a teacher on CMIN108 Jesus could teach that class and get bad reviews.
Great guy! Very nice and can tell his heart is in the right place! Definitly a man after God's heart. Buuut BORING class. Fairly easy..got an A in the class and didnt put much effort in. Expects a lot on the final paper. Put good work into it. And he's the only one who traching CMIN 206 at this point..so good luck. He's not bad at all.
This guy cares more about his students than any other prof at this university. He's not the greatest "teacher," but he is absolutely great at what he does and is incredibly well-respected in the US in his field. If you can look past the short-term confusion in class, you will learn stuff that will stay with you long after you graduate
Very unclear and changes his mind every class about absolutely everything covered. Great man, took him last year for practical theo. He has a great heart, but his theology is messed up and he's very unclear. If you want an A, get a lot of friends in the class. You'll only stay alive in large numbers with so much confusion and bad theology. :)
Waste of my time. Easy A+, but very unclear. Loves his students, sweet man, but confusion up the ying-yang. I'm lucky I got an A with how unclear he was about everything. Waste of my time.
Took him for Practical Theo. He once mentioned in class that Biblical teaching comes second to cultural customs, such as if a villager as 10 wives, that's OK because the villager wouldn't "fit in with the rest of his tribe" if he only had one wife and followed God's way. Messed up theology, WAY confusing, hard to understand homework assignments!!
Love him. Very loving guy. In his class right now. Very funny, very caring. Sure, not that into diving deep into theological issues, but speaking of sociological issues and psychological issues from a Biblical perspective he's amazing. He'll challenge your productivity & make you want to plan your own ministry--which is actually the final! :)
Wonderful Prof! Great theological insight! Completely turned my previous perspectives upside down. Really enjoyed it!
Really easy if you do the work. I learned a lot, but not necessarily about the topic.
I'm a business major, but decided to take this senior sem. I was worried before it started, but it was one of the best decisions I've made. Shrier is the best professor I've had my entire college experience. Such a great guy and enjoys engaging with the class on a deep level. He has a great understanding of theology and missions. No regrets!!!
All of his assignments were group projects and you had to stick with your group the entire semester. All we did is read and when we weren't reading we were listening to lectures. He speaks very monotone which makes it hard to engage in the subject. Most things lectured seem irrelevant.
Dr. Shrier is a wonderful man, and he has been one of my favorite teachers that I've had at APU. I'm not sure how ratings below can say such horrific things about him, other than the fact that they didn't put work in. I missed a total of 9 points in his CLFM class, granted, it's an easy class no matter what. He is extremely caring.
Paul seems like a really nice guy, was always very nice. The problem was that the discussions in class didn't seem to tie back to Faith the way other CLFM classes do. Also, if you don't share his point of view then get ready to be told that you're wrong. All group work and lecture is incredibly boring. Maybe don't take this class.
Dr. Shrier is wonderful and cares for his students! had him for CLFM and was extremely easy; group project is involved and you only have readings as homework; Most of the work is with your group but this class was easy in general! Class is rather long and can be boring though, was mostly discussions on the articles that was assigned (:
Dr. Shrier is an AMAZING man. He is the only professor teaching this class since it's the first time teaching it. There is reading, small papers, and essays but it made me want to write more because it was personal. He genuinely cares about his students and wants you to thrive in what you do. I highly recommend him.
Professor Shrier is an amazing person and teacher! He is definitely different than any other teacher I've ever had, but no teacher is perfect so keep your mind open to him because he truly cares and invests in his students. Although this is a writing class it was a lot of fun, one big essay to put work into, but many little fun assignments.
He is very passionate about theology and writing as a unit. He grades hard but also gives good feedback (although returning graded papers takes awhile for him). He truly desires to see everyone improve but can really give a lot of homework. He can teach really cool ideas and say important things, but most of the time, the class was just hard work.
Dr. Shrier is an amazing individual with so much experience to learn from, but as a professor hes not the best. He is often scatter brained, the assignments dont make sense, & even some of his lectures dont pertain to the course topics.
Honestly, he is a nice guy and all, but as a professor he is not the best. I follow his directions and the way he wants his assignments done, but in the end he always changes it and says you need to it this way. But in fact I did it that way!!! I never felt so frustrated in my life.
Two eight page papers, and I still didn't learn anything. It kinda felt like he didn't know what he was supposed to teach.
Not very understanding, and makes the class much harder than it needs to be. He's the type of person to take pride in how difficult his class is. He's a nice person to talk to, but stay away from his class.
Dr. Shrier is awesome! He really does care about his students and their personal well-being, as long as you do your assigned work and communicate with him if you need extra time he will work with you. A lot of reading in this class and assignments due every week but they're not that bad. I would definitely take him again.
Amazing person. really cares about his students and cares about his teaching and material. Would take his class again!!
His class is consistent. We always know what to expect to happen within the class and how much work we will receive. He really tries to make a connection with his students and will do his best to accommodate you if you run into any issues. His tests do not feel like they are one and are super easy. He's an easy grader 100% should try to get him.
Dr. Shrier genuinely cares for his students. You can tell by his lectures that this is his passion. Great guy!
Amazing person, so caring and always wants you to succeed and get a good grade. you will need to read a bunch but they are great articles !
very nice guy, always positive. writes his own articles that are always thoughtful
Min108 was great! Easy works and book is first used in week 8
He is a good professor that genuinely cares about his students.
Dr.Shrier's class is the one I look forward to the most. Conversations with him are always delightful and you can really see that teaching is his passion through his lectures. He really cares for his students and always makes that very clear to us. Shrier does not give a final and the midterm is set up for your success, super easy! Take his class!
Prof. Shrier is a great teacher! I like every teacher who is very caring to their students and tries to not make it such a stressful class.
Professor Shrier is very kind and cares about his students' success. Homework is mainly reading articles and writing about them, so it's not too bad even though the articles are long. He also never mentions if homework is due soon in class. He just expects you to know and have it done by the due date, so check regularly for due dates on Canvas.
Professor Shrier is a great professor, and super knowledgeable in terms of the bible. After taking him, I have come to greatly self reflect my own life as a Christian, and have found ways to improve my relationship with God
This professor has shown great courage and strength within teaching us. He has showed us great ways and told his personal stories on how he has gotten closer with God. In a way, he has really been a great teacher and got me to want to be more closer and close with God.
He is very kind and genuinely cares about his students
Professor Shrier is a great professor. He cares more about engaging with his students rather than grades. He is pretty understanding also and does not grade too hard. It is just a matter of putting in some effort.
Professor Shrier is very understanding and wants to help his students succeed. He also puts a lot of thought into the material he teaches, showing that he has a true passion for what he does. Instead of a final, he has the class complete group projects which are pretty much built to help you pass. Overall, I highly recommend taking his class.
Really enjoyed his class. Very easy class to take. As long as you do the work you will pass.
Professor Shrier is amazing and you can tell that he genuinely cares about his students. He is very passionate whenever he teaches and he is enjoyable to be around. This class is easy as long and the work is managable.
Professor Shrier is super caring and helpful. He does have a lot of work but it is worth it because the way he gives his exams. His exams are super easy and outside of class you have about a day to complete it and if you do poorly you have an opportunity to score better during the midterms. I definitely would recommend him.
You don't have to learn much (book-wise), but there is a significant amount of reading and writing. He does not give a mid-term or final; instead, he gives group work and projects. Professor Shrier truly cares for all his students and after talking to several other students who took Min 108 with a different professor, Shrier is the way to go!
Amazing teacher he loves his students and will help you grow in your faith. He was my favorite. I wish he taught all my classes.
Professor Shrier is incredibly incompetent. Sure he cares for his students but his course is extremely difficult to understand. He leaves assignments ungraded and makes the requirements to receive full credit on assignments very confusing to understand. The course structure is very difficult to follow and I do not recommend taking his class.
Prosseor Shrier is a geniune nice guy. There could be a lot of homework, but it's definitely doable.
The class is very collaborate and you only have to do 2 reading tickets a week (notes on a reading), take-home exam questions that are opinion-based, 1 major class presentation, and 1 end of the year presentation. I really like Prof. Shrier and I think anyone would enjoy his class, he also gives extra credit and is SUPER kind-hearted!
While attending a conservative christian university, I fully understand that my more left-leaning ideas would not be met well. What I didn't expect was a professor of a required ministry class to be preaching homophobia and antisemitism in his classroom. Its hard to understand how people can say they want to be like Jesus on a foundation of hatred.
This class was
quite a weird class. He mainly teaches off what he has written. His lectures are confusing and usually have little to do with what you have read about and such. He taught a few random things but for the most part I wouldn't take him again just based on the fact that I felt like it was a waste of my time.
