gives a lot of work but it is helpful and if you do the assignments you will do very well
He's a great teacher. His class is fun when you do the reading. He is fair.He is there is you need help.
hard, but you'll learn a lot
crazy guy, very atypical teacher, fun to be around tho
He's a good teacher, but he does give a lot of work. People were intimidated by this. You have to be willing to do the work, and it will pay off in the end. I like his sense of humor.
way too much busy work. he thinks that you must do something 8 times in order to learn how to do it right. he doesn't understand that we already did all this in highschool.
Wouldn't recommend this class for anyone who slacks off or procrastinates a lot.
UNFAIR man. I made 98's on every paper I turned in to him. Then I skipped his unhelpful study session for the final and he gives me a 70 on the final, JUST to make sure it put me out of an A. I had a 4.0 at ASU prior to that. Guess his feelings were hurt
If you're a girl, you'll do well. Don't suggest guys take his class.
had to drop because i got so far behind. he has unreasonable demands and is a hyppie. don't take him if you can write. it will only insult you. take aubrey if you can. she's laid back and understands that some -do know what a thesis statement is.
He gives alot of work outside of class. He seems to think that his class is the only class that you have and you should devote all your spare time to his ridiculous amounts of homewrk.

Sladky is real laid back in class, but don't let that fool you when it comes to grading. His lecture method is "what do you think?". Don't use an internet research paper source. You'll get nailed--rightfully so.
extremely difficult to undersatnd. very repetitive. unfair on most things. if he doesnt like you he will try to fail you. drop his class if you can
I was making at LEAST a B - the last day of class a slack-off girl that badgered me to do her work accused me of cheating - he believed her & AMAZINGLY enough, I got a D. I worked my butt off, he just arranged it so I couldn't pass. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Makes class interesting. I really enjoyed his class if you are not up for open discussions stay away. When you go to take the Regent's exam you'll appreciate having taken this calss.
An A in his creative writing course means you MUST already be a strong writer. Bodyslams your writing. Criticisms change between drafts; what he hates one day, he'll like another. Many people find him interesting; his class puts me right to sleep.
he's awful!! unfair and unclear, too subjective when grading papers and basically wants you to write how HE would, doesnt help prepare for the final and totally forgot about weekly vocab quizzes after 3rd week, but then threw the 1000 word list at the class only a week before the final. dont take!

His class is so hard, I hate those stories and essays, I have tried to get in contact with him, he never respond, I dropped the course.
He is only interesting because he is weird. His classes are oftentimes hard to follow, and in Creative Writing, you have to write like he likes, or you'll get a B at best. He's not the worst, but not the best. Take with caution.
weird maybe but in a totally cool way, sexy and takes an interesting approach to the literature. takes no sh*t from students, maybe that's what you whiners are upset about
The class wasn't necessarily hard but he was unclear in what he wanted for his papers. My advice is if you don't understand what he wants then ask; the only problem is it seems that he wants one thing with one assignment and something else with the next. Be very careful in choosing him for HUMN or any other class.
I'm not quite sure why he gave me an A. I repeatedly turned in C work. I was hoping that he would help me construct stronger essays because I did not get the opportunity in high school. Well, he is not the person to go to for help. Prof. Timmons was way more helpful, and he is a history teacher. I think Sladky was just trying to pass me through his
very boring

He's a great professor. Very passionate about writing. Late all the time, though. Great discussions in class.
Very helpful only if you go to him. He wants everyone to do well in his class!! The only problem is he keeps class the entire time, no exceptions, and he assigns a lot of reading. Participate in class and do the reading and everyting will go great!
Prof. Sladky is great.. He is very funny and makes the class interesting.. He is very passionated about writing and he's so HOT!!!!!.. I will recommend anyone to take him for Humanities 2002 and Eng. 1101 because he will help you out if you go to him..TAKE HIM!!!
Paul is one of my fav. prof. (he prefers his first name which is cool). he's really into his stuff and yes you read a lot but i got a lot out of the class. as long as he sees you try, even if your work isn't very good, you still get an A-B. definately take him!
Prof. Sladky is lots of fun but his quizzes had pretty random questions. Nice guy, philospher.
great teacher, very willing to help you if you ask. always late
Repeats a lot of stuff, but helpful when he meets with everyone individually to discuss essays. If you think you've written a good paper, you probably didn't; writes all over the paper and wants you to THINK a lot more. Can interpret 4720975092 things out of 1 word!! Passionate about english though.
Cool dude, but a little drifted. Somewhat clear yet expects too much. Never fully illustrates what is required.
I really enjoyed his class. He's a bit scattered, and extremely on the strange side, but I think your college career is not complete until you've had someone like him. Quizzes are simple if you read, and grades fairly on essays. Would definately take him again if I needed another English class. (He's pretty funny too.)
He's ALWAYS late for class! He is very scattered in his thoughts, and will throw a tantrum if everyone isnt paying complete attention. However, he gives good feedback, and as long as you listen to him, you will recieve a good grade.
He is an awful teacher he isnt heplful at all and he is very unclear of what he wants. He didnt prepare us for the final and shows alot of favortism. I would not recommend his class at all.
One of the best teachers i have taken! i absolutely hate lit, however he made his class fun! he usually runs over time because he goofs off a lot in class! if you spend the time you will get an A easily! hes a little crazy and tells crazy stories, however it just makes you laugh! I would defiantly recomend!
Cute and funny and knows how to teach writing. Yah he is kind of spacey at times.
He's a nice teacher, got an A. Do the work, always turn in a rough draft. Read the stories, he always seems to go off on these bizarre tangents. You should get a good grade as long as you put some effort into it
Always late to class. I took Engl 1101 fall semester and made a D and didn't pass the final essay. But this semester I made a B and I pass the final inclass essay. He gives wonderful feedback on all papers and if you wont extra if will give it to you. I would prefer everybody to take this class. I dont like Engl but he made it easy for me.
Sladky's awesome. Read the assignments so you're prepared for quizzes. Do rough drafts for big papers, use his comments in final draft. Participate in class. Loved the class discussions. I put in the work and got an A.
He dropped me even when I had a valid excuse as to why I had to miss sm many days of class. Where this is causing me MAJOR problems with financial aid and registration. Then, told me all well theres nothing he can do now to help me.
He's great, take him! Very hippie like........lol
This professor is absolutley awsome! i never really enjoyed lit but he makes you see things in a completley different point of view. He goofs off and has a kinda weird scense of humor, but its crazy as hell! i had such a high grade that i didnt turn in my last paper and still passed with a B. Try your best and put forth 100% and its an easy A. Pret
Sladky is the best english teacher at ASU, besides Prof. Gardner and Prof. Crippen! He is awesome when it comes to teaching students how to open up their own "PERSONAL" way of writing, forget what the guidelines say and let your words flow. Even if you are a HORRIBLE writer, Sladky makes you feel normal. He never judges! Loved him! Made an easy B!
He's a great guy. He rides a scooter, says "cool" a lot. Says things like he has 17 kids. Good teacher.
AWESOME TEACHER!! I LOVE SLADKY!! HE IS SOOOOO FUNNY AND A VERY NICE GUY! GO TO CLASS AND TURN IN YOUR ESSAYS AND YOU'll MAKE AT LEAST A "B"--NO DOUBT--EVEN IF U ARE A "SLADKER"--I LOVE HIM!!!
I loved his class. He is an amazing teacher. SO FUNNY, TOO! He is awesome. He is kinda "strange" at first, but after that he is a trip to be around. I loved class. I really was scared of failing English classes at ASU, but i made an easy "b"...Take Sladky--no regrets!!
Very tough but overall a really good professor. Has a great personality. Very talented writer.
overall he sucks! i thought the class was easy, i never failed ANYTHING in his class & somehow ended up with a C? not to mention that he was VERY unorganized, seemed using drugs & was ALWAYS off topic! i dont know who yall are talking about, maybe he has an identical twin brother w/the same name or something because the prof. was HORRIBLE!
Sladky is Buddha. He is His Holiness, the Dali Lamma. He should be teaching philosophy at an Ivy League school. His intelligence was FAR above that of most of the class; working unimaginable angles of the class readings. Take him, you'll understand :)
Was pretty easy, was very off the wall but i did good, would take again if i had to
He loves jazz music
Great professor! I have taken him twice and loved both classes. Amazing musician, crazy sense of humor and completely intelligent. Great sense of style and loves to have fun. Ask him what he's going to wear for halloween! haha! =) he was Eminem the year I took his English class.
He rides a razor scooter around campus! that makes me laugh
I'm currently taking the class now. 411, he does 5-8 question short answer quizzes, and I do not do well in those at all. When it comes to something that will NOT be my major, I hope it would have been MC. I'm just glad for Art and Music to balance things out. hehe
Don't take this class if you just need an upper division elective--it's constant work from start to finish. If you can't get in to his mindset, prepare to fail or barely pass every single essay. I had a 4.0 in English for three years, then I took this class. Dr. Sladky is a nice, interesting professor, but his grading is all over the place.
Very entertaining, and brilliant.little spacy and unclear but willing to explain.he is the perfect example of the eccentric professor.definitally a hippie and loves to joke around.don't believe him if he feeds you a story about haveing the running of the bulls tattooed on himself.likes to mess with freshmans headslike that. Great Professor.
Constant work from start to finish. If you don't mind the work, he's an awesome prof. Tough class in general with some pretty tough writing assignments. Put forth the effort required (a lot), and you'll come out with an A. I learned a lot from this guy, and I'm glad I took his class. Not too sure if I'd willingly endure taking him again.
Just took him for 1102, not easy by any means but you learn A TON about writing in this course. To make an A you must read, re-read, re-read, listen and apply his concepts to your papers. You will not be upset in this class. I definitely will take him again.
Bright, sharp-witted, enthusiastic, and we share the same birthday and IQ.
Too much of a hippy. Doesn't live in the real world. Makes things overly complicated. Sprinkles in leftist politics with some lectures.
STAY AWAY FROM HIM IF YOU WANT A TEACHER WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON IN CLASS. HE IS THE MOST SCATTER-BRAINED PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. WHEN MIDTERM AND FINALS COME AROUND AND YOU HAVE TO WRITE THE PAPERS, HE MAKES YOU DO A SEPARATE ENGLISH ONE. HE GIVES A HAND OUT ABOUT HOW YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO WRITE THE PAPER BUT CONTRADICTS THE INSTRUCTIONS
great professor, lots of reading and writing, but it pays off. this class will definitely teach you how to become a good writer. and he's funny.
I had him back in 1990. He was hard, but that was good! Great man, very interesting and presented topics that made me crave more. No regrets!
Terrible class. Terrible. Don't do it.
If getting a college degree means subjecting myself to the humiliation of being "instructed" again by someone of Mr. Sladky's caliber, I might re-consider getting an education and instead pursue a much less degrading job as a sewage repair man. Incoherent "lectures," inconsistant assignments and insulting emails characterize this professer's class.
Absolutely horrible. I had never made below an 'A' in an English class before Sladky; I'll be lucky if I get out of his class with a B-. His lectures are disorganized, he is constantly late to class, and change his mind about how he wants a paper written from day to day. Oh, and just a warning, when he grades, his handwriting is horrific.
I think he was great. It was not an easy class but he did lay things out in a way that was understandable. If I had applied myself a little more I probably would have gotten an A. Just work hard and put in the time and you will do fine.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I got a C in his class and I have always made A's in English before. He's disorganized, annoying, handwriting is awful, not clear in directions. His conferences do not help. Forget about choosing your own topic for an essay because he will change it for you. Very forgetful as well. Do not take him please. He ruined my semester. =(
i think he is one of the best teachers in the english department. He gives helpful feedback on your essays and he really wants you to do good. Anytime i had a question about his comments on my papers he explained everything and my grades always imporved on my papers.
disorganized, hard to understand
he is shot out. he emailed my class with homework at 3 am that was due that day. i had to have surgery and he told me to please reschedule bc it was going to inconvenience his class. he is not helpful. he is sloppy, disorganized, and takes critical thinking to a new level. do not take him. you will not pass unless he is in love with you.
Sladky's class was extremely challenging, I will admit. However, he pushed critical thinking to a new level-which is good, in my opinion. I started out making 70's, and finished with an 88 average. He leaves little constructive notes on papers, which helped along the way. If you show an effort to do well, you will pass his class.
DO NOT TAKE! Sladky ruined my semester because he would send homework in a 5 page email at 3 am in the morning and expect it to be completed that day for class. Every lecture was off topic and did not help me at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dude has ADD. Knows what he's talking about, but cannot communicate that knowledge with others effectively. Lectures are usually off-topic and not at all useful or interesting. Lots of awkward pauses... I'd say he's just awkward in general, really. The homework was disorganized as well, as pointed out by others. Might work for some - not me.
I loved him! Take him if you actually want to LEARN... and not just be another sheep in the herd that is college. You will be writing papers often throughout college, for which he prepares you best. I entered and exited English 1102 with a high A average after taking him for 1101.
I may have made an A in his class, but you practically have to already have experience as a writer to make an A. For him, rough drafts are not rough drafts. The only reason I made a 95 on my first short fiction rough draft was because I revised it TWICE prior to turning it in. His grades are arbitrary. No rubrics at all.
He is an amazing professor! He may seem to be 'shot out', but despite this spaceyness he will 'mold' you into an amazing paper writing machine! I had a 70 average 80% of the class, but after talking to him I started to understand everything better, and ended up with an 88 avg! Then in 1102 I got straight high 90's on my papers. So def take him!!
I made an A Engl 1101 (& had 2 award winning essays). Sladky's 1102 made me feel like a first grader working on a masters thesis. No help at all. Changed every topic I chose; didn't even "offer advice" on this. just said, "Ok. Your topic is..." Instruction-horrible. Papers due daily. Emailed 5 page HW assigns regularly, giving a day to do 9 hrs wrk
I don't know why all these people are complaining. He was amazing. I took a creative writing class with him also. I guess you either get him or you don't. I still wish I went to school here so I could take his classes
kept me entertained and inspired me to think outside the box. He's a very cool guy, I guess some people just don't get him and can't appreciate him. It makes me sad to see so many bad reviews on him. I love Dr. Sladky and would take him again if I had the chance!
He does not stay on topic easily, and doesn't explain the assignments clearly. Gives way too much busy work. Would NOT recommend him at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! I cannot stress that enough. Please!! He ruined my GPA and my got my track scholarships revoked. I did everything he asked and more, went to the writing center, asked questions, everything and he still was not satisfied. He wouldn't let me make up any work when I missed classed FOR SCHOOL EVENTS! Never on topic & confusing!
Learning how to write well takes practice and practice is what you will get in Professor Sladky's class. Students complain about having to work hard for an A. There is no easy A with professor Sladky, but if you are really committed to learning how to write effectively in English 1102, take his class. You'll feel good about yourself!!
I took this class because it was the last available spot on TR schedule. The reviews about him are spot on. He e-mails you at all hours of the night for things due the next day. He goes on numerous rants. I feel like I've annotated my annotations. He piles on the work on the weekends. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE NOT A SERIOUS ENGLISH MAJOR.
Hard class. He makes you write with clarity.
He's a wonderful professor. He gets side tracked but honestly he just enjoys having conversations with the class. He's a very active thinker. If you show you care he will do what he can to give you an A.
Professor Sladky gives lots of reading and homework assignments but you will come out of his class better than what you entered. He's a super nice guy. Sure he gets off track some but it doesn't ruin the course. He definitely doesn't respond to emails though. Even with all the homework I'd definitely take his class again!
Do not take this professor. I took him for humanities and the grades in this class are completely subjective. We have no rubrics, and he rarely responds to emails. I have tried several times to contact him (via email and after class) to discuss my papers, and he only responded right before our final paper was due. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He gives out a lot of homework but it's not hard homework. As long as you do the homework and do good revisions this is an easy A. His lectures would be fun if students would participate more. He is very lenient if you ask for an extra day to do an assignment or make up homework.
Dr. Sladky is a great professor! He likes to lecture, but if you take notes, listen, and participate the time goes by quickly and the papers are easy to write. He covers all paper topics in class, so with good notes I was able to get an A with no problem. I hate seeing the bad reviews on here! I would definitely take his class again! He's great!
this guy honestly is the worst teacher i've ever taken. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Paul Sladky is an awful professor that nobody should ever take. He makes lectures very confusing and unbearably long. He is just a god awful teacher. When I took him, he made every essay seem easy but when he gave the comments back he would contradict himself through the whole thing which would make it very unclear on how to fix it.
I am seriously considering withdrawing. He spends the whole class talking about INSIGNIFICANT things. He expects you to just know what he wants exactly in a paper. He is a very tough grader but I doubt he really reads the whole paper because the feedback is minimal and he puts the same comments on everyone else's paper. BORING CLASS! DO NOT TAKE!
Paul Sladky is literally the worst professor I've ever had. He is the most unorganized professor, his directions aren't clear even though he lectures on and on about insignificant things that make no sense. He's a tough grader and it is rare that you will receive a high grade. Save yourself and your GPA because you will not learn anything.
Paul Sladky is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. I went on to complete a Master's degree at UGA. He really taught me to write, he was patient & I really found him inspiring. He convinced me that I was a writer! I'm so glad I had him for 101 & 102, he definitely made all my subsequent writing assignments so much easier. Grateful!
Essays are due every 3-ish weeks. 15% of your grade is reading responses and an art bib which are both very easy. He provides all text, music, and art online. The class is not too bad if you pay attention, take note, and structure your essays EXACTLY how he wants it. He gets off topic a lot but overall provides everything you need for the essays.
Unless you really care about English, there is no need to take his class. There are plenty of other super easy English Professor at AU.
I am going to have to take one of the easiest courses (English 1102) over again. I have never had an issue with making a good grade in an English class. He is not clear in what he wants in a paper, he has very few grades, and he is a very hard grader. Who wants to analyze rhetoric and identify fantasy themes? I did better in anatomy! Thx a lot Paul
Sladky gets a bad rap, but is overall not bad. He is kind of a butt, and can get off track which is why I didnt give him the full 5. He can be confusing, but for the most part his class is pretty routine in what you do. Turn in your stuff, do whats asked and you should be good. Always use a lot of different sources in essays (he likes that).
If I could give less than 1 star, I WOULD. Do NOT take this professor. He is a terrible teacher. He will not read any of the papers and he gives everyone the same feedback. His main goal is to fail everyone. Every lecture day, everyone would hope he would not be there because the lectures have nothing to do with the class. DO NOT TAKE.
Sladky isn't bad but he makes you work for it. He genuinely wants you to learn but the amount of work he gives is insane and he grades it tough. He can be confusing sometimes but overall he's a good professor, just a tough one. I would not recommend taking him if you have a full schedule because the workload is huge and time consuming.
He is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. There are many pointless assignments that he never grades. He is very unorganized and never returns grades in a timely fashion. His lectures are completely pointless and boring. He gives you things to fix in your essay and even if you do you will still get a bad grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Professor Sladky is a great professor, you can tell he really does care about his students. He gives 2 assignments a week, and plenty of time to complete them. The readings are a bit much sometimes, but they are really helpful. Overall he seems like a nice guy and you'll pass as long as you complete the assignments & put in effort.
I would only recommend this professor to students who are willing to put in lots of effort to this course. He assigns at least two assignments per week & does not always grade the assignments. He expects you to spend a lot of time on the assignments & papers although he does not always give enough time to give your best effort.
I took his online class last semester during COVID and he was so understanding. He graded fairly and answered emails right away. By far my favorite professor Ive had at Augusta University.
This teacher does not seem to care about his asynchronous classes. when faced with an issue with major essay he blames students for possible technology issues. Does not respond to emails in any sort of a timely manor nor does he respond to direct messages on D2L. He gives terrible teacher reviews/comments making it incredibly difficult to do work.
Class was supposed to be asynchronous but he decided to run it like a Tuesday/Thursday class, making assignments due on those days. Also the assignments were extremely in-depth, requiring way too much time.
It's an online class but work is due on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00AM lots of reading and writing for anyone who isn't planning to be a English major. He highly dislikes receiving emails.
Claims to be a computer science teacher but I dont think hes even close to understanding how to work a computer. All his 'templates' are just overall a mess, and for an english teacher, he really needs to work on his spelling and grammar. His emails are sometimes completely incoherent and hard to understand, same with the templates he made us do.
As someone that has loved writing for a long time, do not take this class. Every piece of writing you submit has to be cookie cutter, he will not accept any individual thought. His grading criteria is confusing, he tells you what is wrong with your work but not how to improve. Don't take him, AU offers so many English professors of higher quality.
Don't take this English 1101 class. He is a tough grader, and does not tell you how to improve your writing.
Way too much work every week. and the assignments are messy. Tough grader that leaves no room for mercy. He is understanding though, and not too hard to reach out to.
Stay away at all costs. If I had the option to either take this professor, or run across the country with no shoes, no water, and no food... I would already be running in the next state over. Very technology illiterate. Has no sense of communication. Grades hard. Also, if you are taking this online, be prepared to turn in HW every T and TH at 9:00.
- Treats class as if it's the only priority - Takes long to respond to emails - Overly worded guides, non helpful
Whoever said they would rather run across the country than take his class again was right. I was given feedback in two different slots that both said opposite things. He posts instructions that are incorrect. I wrote a 1200 word essay just for him to email the class and say he meant to tell us 1000 words. His feedback is not good enough to improve.
No peer-reviewed textbook, instead uses poorly organized documents that make learning inefficient. Removes points for minor details. Requirement to use specific templates, despite the course being focused on English composition, which often results in confusion, as these templates can be misleading and necessitate rewriting the final draft later.
Worst Professor I've ever had, no flexibility when it comes to turning in assignments, which will be 2 times a week, T and TH. Sometimes more than two! Also he critiques every little thing on essays, which is not the problem, it is that he gives little time to write said essay and expects us to treat his class as our only priority. DO NOT TAKE!
This was an online class, there is NO FLEXIBILITY. Assignments are due twice a week at 9 AM, the essays make up a big part of your grade DONT miss them. Tough grader and DOESNT accept late work. The work itself isn't super difficult, but the assignments are long and very TIME-CONSUMING.
Took this class online WARNING there's a lot of reading. When he says your assignment is to be turned in at 9AM TURN IT IN DAYS BEFORE. Assignments are due twice a week on Tues and Thurs yet you can possibly have 2-3 assignments due in 1 day. There is no acceptance of late work AT ALL If you're sick you have to work through it.
Organized, but very strict guidelines on grading. Assignments are usually due on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but he does provide flexibility from time to time. The assignments themselves are not too hard, but contain a lot of reading. His feedback on the drafts was also a little confusing to understand. Other than that, he was a decent professor.
