Professor Smith is ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD:) Very thorough in his teaching and extremely approachable. the most 'willing to help' prof I have ever seen.fair and gives a week after exams so you can talk to him bout it.AWESOME PROFESSOR
No Comments
He glosses over material and tries to cram a whole semesters worth of material into one exam (watch out for exan 3. Otherwise he knows his stuff and will entertain questions during class.
Dr. Smith is awesome... the only chem class I've had where I didn't have to teach myself everything from the book... def the best chem professor I've ever had!
Orgo isn't easy, but he's one of the best teachers you can have for it.
Even though he never returned our quizzes back, and gave a kick ass final, he wasn't bad overall. Taught well. Very clear in what he was teaching. And Lab lecture was interesting because he is good looking
His grading system is really bad as well as his teaching style--take Perks if you can!!
he sucks....you wont have any idea on how you are doing in the class until you fail
good teacher, he writes things on the board so that he won't go too fast. he explains things if you ask. good teacher and funny at times
No BS, if you're an idiot you will have trouble in his class. Put the hours in...
Best teacher you can have for Chem. He's very clear and good at answering questions (unlike Carpenter), but Chemsitry is a pretty hard course and if you don't practice the problems like crazy you will fail. Good luck. More coffee too.
chem is def not my forte and i've taken the class twice previously, but i've finally found a prof that can teach!! Dr. Smith is awesome because he actually teaches the concepts in lecture rather than just talking. he goes at a good pace because he writes notes on the board. exams are fair as long as you go to class and study.
He's a really good teacher and very excited about the subject. He wants students to be involved in the subject. His exams are very fair and he is very approachable.
With Dr Smith, you just have to go to class and do the recommended problems for each chapter. He teaches really well. He actually goes really deep in the concept, so you get it easily. The curve is pretty big too... (75% = A )
He's awesome! I wish I could take all my chem classes with him. His tests are not tricky and its very easy to do well in this class. For him, no question is stupid so dont be afraid to ask questions. He has 4 tests in a semester and drops the lowest one so they dont cover too much material. Do the homework problems and go to lecture and ull do fine
Very good teacher. Doesn't teach from PPTs, rather writes on whiteboard very fast so you have to keep copying notes. Tests are sometimes difficult, but if you study for them, you will pass them. 4 exams, 1 drop, 1 final, all 25%. Nothing else, so just study for the tests. Tests 1+2 are concept based, Tests 3+4 are math based, so prepare well!
i had P. Smith for Chemistry 102 and he always drew stupid organic molecules on the board and rambled ON and ON about how he was an ''organic chemist''. Now I'm taking ORGO LAB with him! Lectures are VERY boring, UNCLEAR with what we're supposed to accomplish in lab and quizzes / post lab and assignments are TRICKY! He still rambles too.
Dr. Smith is a great professor, very helpful, good teacher, he teaches in detail and cares whether the students understood it or not, he teaches so in depth that the book is just an extra resource!!! he is a very good professor, and is very approachable!! plus he's kinda cute!
The man is a Sheer genius. So much so that sometimes he forgets that we're undergrads. He goes through things VERY VERY QUICK and on pace with syllabus, and although the avg mean score of an exam is between 50-60% he expects you to know 100% of all information that precedes the current lecture. You'll work your butt off for a C in the class.
Well i think that smith was very straight forward and clear with what he said... yeah he does forget that were undergrads and loves saying "well this is common sense"... we all don't have phD's in orgo... but his tests are actually pretty fair and if you put in the work and the practice and make use of the free hour time on mondays, an A is do-able
He is not as easy as everyone seems to think...you have to work to get a good grade in his class. Very nice guy.
Dr. Smith is awesome. He writes everything on the whiteboard along with you so that you have enough time to copy down the notes. If you go to class and write everything he writes, then when you read the book, you already know most of the stuff it is saying. You don't have to do a lot of learning from the book because he covers everything.
He is very approachable and seems to be very dedicated to the subject. He discusses till the very last second of class time and really wants his students to succeed and understand the course material. definitely one take for intro level chem! nice, friendly and pretty good looking for his age. lol

Very clear with lectures.... gives good/helpful notes. exams are OK... need to study in advance!! ask questions... he's ready to help.
He is a really good proffessor very clear but make sure you do the offline problems and GO TO DISCOVERY
Make sure to study hard for the exams and go to ever discovery.
Very helpfull, but just as far as your understanding. Your entire grade depends on your TA. Only test was the Final exam which was very easy! >85 is an A, but still got a B thanks to my awful TA.
the discussion sections are pretty pointless with the CPS not working for half the semester. his final is easy, though it is free response, just like his quizes. the only downfall is a bad TA, who messed up your grades, gives you a B wrongfully by losing papers you DID complete correctly.
He writes everything down and does a good job of explaining things. dont need the book for his exams. tells you what you need to know, hard material, so the exams are hard. all free response. but he is a good professor, probably my favorite @ UMBC
I LOVE DR. SMITH. He's amazing at teaching, and he's cute. His tests are free response, which in my opinion is easier than multiple choice (esp for orgo). I wish I could take all my classes with him =)
I'm in love with Dr. Smith. Not only is he great to look at during lecture, he explains orgo SO clearly and makes something that can be complex into something so simple. He doesn't trick you, he just wants you to understand orgo (once you do, it's kinda fun). Very fun, very nice, very hot. Four exams, final, with a curve. ACE organic is 10%.
He's hot, cute, good looking. but Orgo is not easy or I can say his test is sort of tricky. You gotta be careful. It's nice to sit in his class. It's not too boring. He has a charming, good charisma for 'style of professor'. Is he married? Does anyone know?
He's good at teaching but his tests are horrible. I don't find the questions good since he will give no partial credits. Take Perks instead. The class average is low and I don't know how I am going to pass the final. The tests are terrible. Just hate them.
He is very friendly and approachable. His exams are VERY hard.. but there is a trick to do well. During his lectures, he hints on what you "should" know for the exam and if you study/understand everything from his lectures using practice problems from the book... u will do good.
very passionate about orgo and that is and UNDERSTATEMENT. he's a pretty good professor but sometimes makes it seem like we should be on his level with comments like "that was way too easy, come on you should know this" when we just learned something a class or two ago. other than this he really is a good professor. 3exams and final + ace organic.
He is the best professor in the department. Take classes with others and you will see what I mean. Its ORGANIC its supposed to be hard. He does an amazing job preparing his notes for class and goes over everything on exams. Read the book, learn reactions, and pay close attention/ memorize and you will get an A. I wish I had him for every class
I think he is a nice person, but you have to expect to meet really good TA. TA is grading all lab assignments, and he/she takes off a lot of points even if you got one wrong. They never learned to give PARTIAL pts... maybe it was just my TA... the final exam is pretty easy. Do the lab assignments well then you'll get an easy A.
I think he made it more tolerable than the 101 chemistry class I took. I really liked him as a teacher but I still don't get chemistry. Dr. Smith really is good about explaining and is really intrested in the subject.
This is not the easiest class, but it is definitely doable. He goes over everything that will be tested, but it helps to go back into the book and get more info. He is extremely helpful and is very willing to go over any problems that you might encounter.
i took his chem102L chem351 with him It isn't thanks to him though, he NEVER makes sense in chem351 and you TEACH YOURSELF! i ended w/ a B, bc i had outside help; he assumes you understand everything orgo from day one. if you can take it w/ someone else.. DO IT!! i had Dr. Hosmane for orgo2 and orgo FINALLY makes sense. chem102L was easy though
By far the best prof. in the department, and I wish I had the pleasure of taking Orgo with him. His lectures are crystal clear, and he is extremely approachable. The final exam was easy, he made it clear what he expected on reports, and I think he curved.
Very clear and helpful. He explains things in a way that makes it easy to learn and understand. I wish that I had the opportunity to take the organic lecture with him because I think I would learn better.
He is a pretty awesome professor. Very approachable and makes the subject really easy. Just make sure to study for the quizes, never really know what to expect. Always ask him what to study for in the upcoming quiz so that you are prepared for it before.
He was obsessed with making the class harder than it should have been. It was a 2 credit Lab and I spent amazing amount of time on it. His quizzes were unnecessarily hard, and he could have made moderately difficult quizzes that still showed students learned the material. If it weren't for my lenient TA, I prolly wouldve gotten a C.
Mediocre. Really nice guy, really likes his chemistry, but really strict about rules and has a tendency to be condescending. lab quizzes are HARD.
Very clear with his lectures but gave unnecessarily hard quizzes. Approachable and willing to help students during lab. If you need help, I suggest visiting him during his office hours.
His lectures are so boring. You don't need them at all if you're in Chem 102. His final is basically Chem 102, shortened dealing with a lot of Acid-Base titrations. Overall, it's a lot of work for a 2 credit class and the labs sometimes take forever. Pretty boring class but with a good amount of work, you can get a B.
If you need to take a chem lab, always try to take it with Dr. Smith. His lab leadoff's are very clear, concise, and organized. All quizzes and exams are fair, and most are relatively easy. Smith is very approachable, he has a good sense of humor, and he really knows his stuff. If you have a choice between Perks and Smith, take Smith.
Dr. Smith is incredibly bright and loves teaching this class. However, he writes very quickly across the board and you spend a lot of your time frantically trying to copy. 75% of my class failed this last semester. His tests are all free-response. YOu are only graded on the four tests.
I do by no means recommend taking CHEM 352 over the summer...although Professor Smith does his best to clarify any misunderstandings, the class goes by really quickly and so for most exams, you're struggling to keep 4 chapters worth of RXNs and mechanisms from jumbling together. The class averages are abysmal during the summertime.
I took the class over the summer and it was rough, but I don't think I would have done nearly as well if it weren't for Dr. Smith. He's awesome and he really loves the subject. Take orgo 2 with Smith if you can. You won't regret it.
If you have to take Orgo 2, try to take it with Smith over the summer. Orgo 2 isn't easy by any means, but being able to focus on it over the summer in a shortened semester really worked for me. It's a lot of material that goes by fast, but if you keep up with flashcards, go to class, go to tutoring, and go to his review sessions, you'll do fine.
Great professor for lab! I like how he writes on the board during leadoff. His lectures were truly enjoyable. Talk to him when he comes and visits your lab section; he's really nice and helpful, and he'll probably remember you. He's really enthusiastic about chemistry and his research. Listening to him makes me excited about organic chemistry!
Dr. Smith is a really nice guy. He really loves what he's doing and is incredibly helpful. He loves questions and will make sure you understand everything perfectly. Also, he doesn't believe in multiple choice questions, so don't expect those. Lab quizzes were tough but he made the final a breeze. If you can take Dr. Smith, definitely do it!
Dr. Smith is a very good teacher; he's very enthusiastic about chemistry. It's important to attend class since we barely touched the textbook and exams are completely based on what he said in lecture. The material is difficult but the exams are fair. The only problem is that he's a ridiculously slow grader and doesn't put grades on Blackboard.
Avoid taking this class when you have a full schedule and make sure to develop a good study group because Smith or the TAs won't give you enough info to do the work. Pre/postlabs are put out really close to lab time and usually after lecture rather than before so make sure you have a good stretch before lab to work on them.
his lab quizzes are so hard. ridiculously hard. 2 credits but you will spend a lot of time for this course. also, lab as usual is run by TAs and they are very arrogant and rude. PREPARE to work hard and come to lab prepared...
I know him personally and he's a nice guy. Not the clearest teacher but very willing to help if you ask. No homework per se for the summer class (I didn't study as much as I should have) but basically, do as many problems as you can.
He takes the time to make sure the whole class understand the concept. 3 free response exams and 1 final. Second time taking orgo 1 and I feel like everything is making more sense. Also gives tips on finding the info quicker and easier. Really wish professors were like him.
Man oh man this guy was the greatest
His boring lectures are awful. He only uses the chalkboard. You can't see it half the time and he blocks it as he writes. He doesn't make it clear what he is teaching and just writes random mechanisms. He goes slow on certain things and gets way behind. He refuses to look at the ACS final so he teaches unecessary things and doesn't cover everything
As a person, Smith is kind of nerdy and innocent. However, he is awful at teaching orgo. I learned absolutely nothing. He doesn't put any notes up on BB. Writes it all on the chalkboard. He doesn't really explain the reactions so you can connect it to the book. He didn't keep up with the book so it's finals time and we have to teach ourselves. UGH.
His exams don't reflect the ACS final and are all free response. He barely gives partial credit. Course is based solely on exams. There are no buffers. You fail one and could fail the class. Took 351 with Perks and Geirasch and learned so much more. He even told us that he wasn't going to look at the final because he was confident in his teaching.
Dr. Smith is friendly and enthusiastic about organic chemistry. He was rather disorganized with teaching and it was clear that it was not his priority. He doesn't always respond to emails. Make sure you keep up with your orgo studying because you will need it in lab and the information is cumulative.
The best Chemistry professor at UMBC. Grades only come from Exams, but if you go to class ( occasionally gives a test question in class), read the book, and do the problems he suggest you will do fine. Orgo is a hard class but he makes it tolerable
Very passionate in his lectures, and you learn something interesting every time. One negative is that he spends very little explaining the reaction we will be performing in the lab, but the lab manual is good enough, and the procedure is usually modified when you get to lab. Overall, he overlaps with 352 very well which is great.
He is too specified in lab. He makes you put the most random things ever on every single lab report like mechanisms, reactions, and data charts even if it is not mentioned in the lab manual. It is tedious work and everything about it sucks. Also, he is really disorganized on backboard, not clear on what he expects from his students!
Dr. Smith was an absolutely amazing professor. His lectures actually showed applications of organic chemistry in every day life that were interesting as hell. Labs were engaging and entertaining. Everything about his class was extremely fair, he didn't expect us to know anything not explicitly stated. I would 100% take another class with him.
Smith is an amazing professor! So knowledgeable about Orgo and spectrometry. Go to lecture and take good notes as this will help you for the quiz/final. The quizzes are incredibly hard but the rest of the class is easy. Try your best to get a good/easy TA and an A is almost guaranteed. Final is really easy and is out of 110 points.
He would talk about things in lecture that had nothing to do with the lab. He wouldn't post anything on Blackboard and would write all lecture notes on the whiteboard in the lecture hall. He would never tell you what he expects on assignments and you would end up getting points taken off all the time. He's so disorganized and scatterbrained.
BEST chem prof I ever had! Taking him over the summer was a great decision because it allowed you to learn the material without forgetting it. Do the HW problems and the test questions will come easily. Had flexible office hours, SI pass helped reinforce the material, and was very open to re-checking exams for grading mistakes. Highly recommend!
took a summer course and was by far the worse experience of my life. CHEM 352 was disorganized and there was not homework. Exams were hard for no reason. He gave us little resources outside of the textbook. Miss one question on the exam and you'll be lucky to get a C. Only cares about his research and not teaching.
I am a visiting student for the summer and felt that Dr. Smith was a great representation for UMBC. His lectures were super informative, he was eager to answer questions, and his exams were fair. While he doesn't use Blackboard, he is still very easy to access by email and you receive grades back really quickly. Just make sure you attend lecture!!
Dr. Smith co-taught this course. They never uploaded lecture slides (which were dense so it was hard to get everything we needed to study), didn't consistently give study guides, didn't use blackboard so I had no clue what my grades were, and Dr. Smith even lost our exam grades that he had on his laptop. Topics were interesting though
Taking this course was a nightmare compared to 351L. He was very disorganized in his lead off lectures and often went off on unrelated tangents. He also made the quizzes and exams extremely hard for people like me who weren't concurrently taking the lecture course. Lab procedures were also often unclear.
Canceled lecture half of the time, but did not offer material otherwise. Content covered in lecture was not available outside of class. Lab report grading was not exactly clear. Starts you at an 8/10 for your in-lab grade; impossible to get a 10. Midterm was really difficult, but final was better. Moved very fast in lecture.
This class is very similar to Orgo Lab I, however, in classes quizzes and exams are now completely FRQ. Lecture is mandatory and there are clickers, but they happened once. The lecture does not really help, it is just whatever tangent the professor wants to talk about that day. He is obsessed with NMR machines and color theory.
Hard preclass quizzes. Peers who took orgo2 a year ago struggled bc you needed to remember everything. Near the end, we were ahead of reg orgo2 lec by 1-2 weeks. Spec stuff in the first few weeks suck, the packets are lengthy and hard. Experiments almost always worked tho! Take notes during lec, he writes the mechs on the board and erases quickly.
Dr. Smith cares about his students, has flexible office hours and is understanding when explaining concepts and quizzes. Lab TA does all the grading and we did not have any midterm or final, but in class quizzes were difficult. Pay attention in lecture because its all fair game on the quiz!
Critical info is covered in prep. Lab procedures are heavily modified and sourced from various materials, mainly verbal instructions during lecture. Grades/feedback arrive late, mostly during finals. Labs are interesting but lengthy, with high expectations for theory and application. Required notebook prep is time-consuming, often taking hours.
I never once knew what was expected of me. Please record his lectures, he never posts anything (including grades) to Blackboard, so take notes on what your lab report should say, he isn't going to repeat himself. We were all trying to guess what would be on the final- no study guide or practice exam. I'll never even know what I got on the final.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in UMBC. Gives no partial credit for written response, cancels class during a short summer session and expects the students to learn the material by themselves. I felt like that he wanted all the students to repeat his class so UMBC can make more money. I don't recommend this professor.
