Easy "A". Kinda boring but you get to go to cool places and events.
Easy A all you have to do is go to class
awseome prof and good looking
No Comments
If you go to class, you will get at least a B
class was boring, class room jam packed with people, performances on weekends :(
Wierd guy
He was halarious! He really seemed to like what he was doing. If you went to class you could pretty much guarentee a BA in the class!
Awsome teacher...Would take any of his classes again in a heart beat
Class was interesting and crowded.
go to class, and the after-class performances and you'll be fine. But he's a little on the odd side-and beware he makes you speak into a microphone
Easy easy class. Be there, get a good grade. Out of class performances enjoyable. Somehow he remembers everyone's names (amazing).
Very easy...go to class and performances and you will do fine...pretty much an easy A. Class is crowded but hey its actually fun sometimes! Oh yea he picks favorites too...hard to do in a class of like 200 but he still does it.
The out of class performances were cool. The class IS crowded. He uses a mic all the time and make you answer questions with it. All in all, good class and tou should have no problem passing. Get to know the TA's the are the ones who give you your grades
great class, great teacher, loved it...not so much the out of class assignments though...too many of them
One of the most interesting classes, if you do the work and actually pretend to care you will do fine. Alot of work for a low level class, but the end result was worth it!
horrible....there was 3 TA's besides him and yet it was still the most disorganized call EVER!!! Half the class will be wasted on technology problems!
Awesome Teacher, love this class
he makes class fun!!
Not much to the class, show up, do the assignments, go to the performances and you'll do fine. He's a little weird, but the class is so big it doesn't matter. The content of the class is interesting though.
he is very funny and outgoing - great at getting people involved
Hands down the worst class I have ever had. Prof. solomon is a moron. You are not tested on what you do in class. He has 3 TA's, yet their incompetence level is astounding. He is the most pretentious person I have ever met. If this class was half as good as he thinks it is it would still suck, because he is an ass.
The class was very different. It introduced us to alot of things that we weren't used to. The class was kinda fun and you usually got let out a little early. Just make sure you can attend all the shows!
Easy class, just show up. He likes it if you speak up (but not too much). Very interesting class kinda like the ricky lake show. Loved it and him. totally recomend it.
He can be very blunt, and sometimes seem rude when critiqing work. Lots of classes cancelled to work on writing at home. He is very helpful, and will make lots of time to talk to you one on one, which for this class is extremely important. He also likes to show your work in front of the whole class, and critique it that way.
easy class take it, get an A move on. hes a good guy though not always 100% accuret with what he says. Double check some of his facts if u think hes wrong. then talk to im a bout it seperetly.
This man is a huge idiot. I hated him, hated his TA's and really hated the class. I did not learn anything about art and the class had no structure what so ever. He is a moron. I despise him. Take any other art class.
Crazy guy. Interesting class...really random about stuff, exams easy and had to read one book and write an essay on it. Don't take this class if you don't plan on going or missing out of class performances.
I took his art history class, very interesting, fun class....lots of randomness.
Great class. Inspired me to go into art education program. He is very up to date with what's going on currently in the arts world. Relatively easy and straight forward but I learned a lot. Class was always really interesting so I rarely missed. He likes it when you speak up during lectures.
I thought Paul was a great guy. His class was interesting, and i love how he ties the current with the past. He's got a great sense of humor, and the class is easy if you let yourself be involved. I definitely recommend taking any of his classes!
Very interesting class. Many people that rated Solomon very poorly I expect because the class is geared toward people interested in intense discussion about touchy issues. Good class.
Paul is a great guy, funny, knows what he's talking about. GO to class, pay attention and you'll be just fine!
i love paul !!! he is a GREAT TEACHER. very friendly (unlike other professors). he is very up to date with the world & especially the world of art. direct encounter with the arts is hands down the best class ever :)
Good guy. Funny! Knows A lot about what he's doing. Quizes and tests are difficult. You have to do a lot outside of the class, attending plays and other events which are mandatory. I didn't like the class simply because I wasn't interested but I did learn a few cool things.
Prof solomon is the man, his class expanded my mind.
Amazing class jam packed with different stuff, never did I think id learn so much in an art class. Solomon is awesome and tries to make class fun. Huge time committment outside of class though (required performances). 3 tests plus final.
This class really was amazing, a lot of what was discussed is kind of touchy to some people. Some times they showed very controversial and sometimes graphic or gross art. but you just have to move past that. The tests are super as long as you just go to class and somewhat take notes. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Excellent excellent excellent class. If you want to expand your view on society and yourself through the arts, and you think political correctness is boring, take this class. A little more work than most gen eds, but if you're really into the subjects it doesn't even feel like work. If you're really serious about getting a well-developed view take
he teaches his class very differently ! first day we watched a movie...but the class is very interesting and u learn a lot of cool things! If you go to class youll no the material for the test but if u dont go u can probli still do good! Alot of participation like going to operas plays and museums! Basically your grade
Love him. Take this class.
he is a very hard person to follow, and he has very little structure in his class room.
Class was super easy! i ended it with 150% extra credit given out at any chance, and tests are so ricdiculously easy if u just come and listen. as far as the class in general, its super random and totally biased to what solomon thinks. hes pretentious, but other than than, great class! but youd do need the coursepack and to go to performances!
Good teacher, I would recommend this class to anyone for an easy gen ed. The class covers some odd topics, like the comic book section, but the performances are fun. Lots of class discussions, and a laid back atmosphere. Tests are easy.
I will never forget this professor. He opened my mind and challenged me in some pretty creative ways. He is eccentric and hilarious. Class discussion is a must and debates are even better.
I was completely unaware of this subject, but i really grew to love this class, except some of the mandatory performances outside of class time were inconvenient.
This class is an easy A+.. just go to class and the shows and pay attention.. the tests are super easy and you get like 50 points for just going to the shows. Solomon is good teacher, just don't get on his bad side, he might kick you out of his lecture.. I've seen it happen before lol. prlly not the best feeling in the world.. Great class and prof!
Absolutely Amazing.
This teacher is Awesome. It's a easy four credit class. You do not have homework and if you do your probably required to go see a play. I loved Paul and wish I can take his class again. You really don't have to show up all the time but I came to every class because it was so interesting and fun. Awesome Awesome Awesome.!
Great class. Very interesting. Loved everything about it.
If you like listening to a guy talk about his "art" for 8 weeks then this is the class for you! There's a ton of outside work like plays and concerts to go to, it's not worth it for a 3 credit class. And he spends half the lectures talking about his own work! Literally just bragging about himself for 45mins at a time. I absolutely hated this prof!
He is an amzing teacher and the class is awesome!
Attending the lectures, while not mandatory, are the only way to pass. All the info is on the tests. Copy the notes that are up on the projector, briefly study them for each test, and pay attention in lectures. He is an easy grade on assignments.
He is a very entertainable professor. He keeps his students involved by having us interact in the classroom with debates and other fun topics.
Good guy
Is it true you get an A if you sit in the front of the class?
Paul is a very entertaining instructor. I loved his energy and passion for his career. I highly recommend him as a professor!
Best class I have ever signed up for. Made every class really fun but you need a lot of time outside of class for the plays and activities :) Recommend taking this in the spring!
This guy is amazing! He makes you think and learn about Kalamazoo. I learned so much in this class. I can honestly say I look at life a little differently. Sit in front of the class like front row if you can. He's an amazing Professor! Also sexy as hell!
I really thought this class would be interesting and filled with creative forms of art. I was discouraged by how much it felt like just a lecture hall. Participation matters along with daily assignments. His rules are set in stone and there is A LOT of out out of class work. He is very stubborn and I did not enjoy this class as I thought I would.
I enjoyed Mr. Solomon's class very much. You have a opportunity to voice your opinion and learn about amazing events and current and just talk about things we enjoy and believe in. This class does include some outside work but it's usually easy and entertaining. I promise you will learn a lot and its not boring material and He's really caring.
Group discussion style lectures, 3 after class events to attend, and a few walking tours sprinkled in. The class is exceptionally fun and Paul wants to give out A's. There are daily assignments and lots of blog posts to make, but the work is generally easy and should only take a 20 minutes after each class to complete.
This class was amazing even if you don't like art. This class engages people to speak out either in class or online on a blog which is pretty cool if you are a quiet person. The lectures are fun, artists and other people are brought in class to learn from their experience. Easy to earn an (A) if you come to class.
Such a narcissistic person, constantly shows all of his artwork in class looking for compliments. Really just not an enjoyable person to be around.
He does talk, a lot. And the only bad part about that is the fact that he loves to talk about himself and his family more than about the subject matter. Good guy though and interesting lectures.
He's a bit arrogant to me, but nonetheless a good teacher. It's an enjoyable class, and he definitely knows his stuff. Expect him to talk about himself a lot though.
Easy class, but Prof Solomon likes to talk about himself. He also hates when people are on their phones and will kick you out of class. Not a very easy to talk to. He is very short and can be rude. Most of the time his assistant teaches class anyways. No laptops allowed. Classes take place at a variety of locations.
Class is also known as DEARTs. You will either love this class or hate this class. Professor Solomon is very tedious to listen to. He tends to be very arrogant and talk about himself more then the topic/lecture at hand. He will not let late students in and WILL yell at you if you are seen not paying attention. Annoying to take but can be an easy A.
Attendance is key for this class. There are days where participation points are given, daily assignments are handed out at the end of most classes, and you can only get a good grade on the tests if you attend most classes. The lectures can be hard to sit through because the class is long. Go to lectures and do as much extra credit as you can.
This is not "Direct Encounter of the Arts". Lots of discussion time was directed towards social/political views that Professor Solomon agrees with. He spent the last two or three lectures bashing right wing politicians. Came in very disappointed since I learned nothing about the Arts.
don't take Paul for any classes. very biased. talks too much. I enjoyed guest speakers more.
I did not enjoy this class. I thought i would but theres very little learning about arts. change name to direct encounter of views please
must comment on the blog! also the tests are straight from the powerpoints and lectures so pay attention in class
I learned nothing from this class, and it's discussion based which I usually like, but in this class really disliked.
This class should be called "how to think like an extremist from the Left Side." Very liberal class with a clear bias. I've learned more about the professor's political views then I have art. Dissapointed that WMU requires their students to take this class as the teachers clearly have an agenda that has nothing to do with education.
Wow, I was skeptical about the reviews on here when I registered for this class for the spring. Boy I should've listened. Class is definitely misdirected towards a social debate class. When we would actually talk about art, it gets sidetracked to social meanings in society. Very disappointed.
Solomon likes to talk about himself a lot and carry on lectures. The class is definitely an easy A and I recommend it if you need a boost. Attendance is mandatory most of the time, but it helps boost your grade. Also, posting on the blog is a pain but really is necessary. The guests are more interesting then him.
Pretty arrogant and annoying. The TA and guest artists were better. Hated walking tours. Lots of class discussions, but only like 5 people actually said something. I gave my opinion ONCE and the prof questioned it in front of everybody, so I was embarrassed. Class is an easy A though, tests were easy and not too much hw.
Show up to every class and youll do fine on the assignments, tests, and class participation. There isnt much homework, but the homework given takes less than 45 minutes to do. Make sure to do the online blog. There is some good extra credit opportunities to help your grade. There is 3 required events that are outside of class.
Solomon is easily one of the most arrogant professors Ive ever had. He asks students to share their opinion on a topic, majority of the time political, only to question said opinion if it doesnt match his own. Solomon also likes to change his written rules without any advance notice. Life happens and when it does with this class you lose points.
He is very hard to follow and claims to be open to new opinions, but he rarely listens to others.
very opinionated professor. the walking tours, plays, and art exhibition that you have to do for the class are unnecessary for a 1000 level class. there are some mandatory attendance days for points. there is an extra fee for the class, i assume for going to the play and bringing in guest speakers. the quizzes and "daily assignments" are annoying.
I absolutely loved this class, I was actually bummed when it ended. A huge part of the class is just discussing opinions about art and society. You also get to go to plays and shows in kalamazoo, as well as do a walking tour of the city. Local artists and musicians also come in and talk to the class. Attendance is mandatory, but its 20 easy points.
Definitely an easy A. Multiple different subjects of art covered in this class. Must show up to class to gain knowledge of their lectures because nothing is posted online. Some days attendance is mandatory to get daily assignments. You also have class in different locations and have to attend events outside of class. Lots of extra credit!
This class was SO boring and the modules were absolutely awful. Its an easy A if you show up but there is a lot of extra thing you have to do. I would never take this class again haha
This class is absolutely horrible DO NOT TAKE!! Paul Solomon is a horrible teacher, the exams online are so hard good luck coming even close to 100. The class requires you to do a lot of useless work outside of class. Like go on field trips downtown and go to the KIA. This class is an absolute waste of time and its not easy for being a gen ed.
I took Direct Encounters with the Arts with Paul. It was awful. He treated his instructor like a TA and it really upset me. He was hardly there at the beginning of the semester. I literally almost fell asleep in every class because it was so boring. The video modules you're required to do are long an monotoned and it was torture too get through.
If you show up, pay attention, and take notes you will pass with an A. There are a lot of mandatory attendance days worth about 40-60 points per day. If you do not want to travel off campus do not take this course. There are several classes were you have to go to the KIA or walk around downtown. The guest artist and plays you watch are decent.
The course is average at best. Probably easier than most other electives/ gen ed classes, but it is nothing to get jazzed up about. With the class being so large, Paul doesn't make a real effort to form a relationship with the class. He was barely there at the beginning of the semester, and he didn't seem all there when he did show up.
This is a fairly easy class to fill your Area 1 gen ed. There are 3 exams and a final based off of lectures (which are very boring), but not hard if you pay attention and take decent notes. There are online video modules with quizzes, a few daily assignments, and points are given for going to the kzoo art museum and two mandatory plays at wmu.
Interesting class materials, but the class became focused on mainly politics as the semester progressed. You have to do two walking tours and museum visits during the semester downtown Kalamazoo and go see two plays outside of class.
Paul is great! I would recommend taking his class. With this year being online, he made things a lot easier. A lot of topics are covered throughout the class, but class is not mandatory, I would 100% recommend attending class, you learn so much more when you can ask questions. It is test/quiz heavy, but nothing out of the ordinary. It's an easy A.
Took this class as a gen-ed and expected it to being boring but i was wrong. Pail cares about what he is teaching which keeps you intrigued. With it being online, this class was organized very nicely and was pretty easy to coast through. This class was 4 credits but the workload was very manageable and was more enjoyable than expected.
He's super chill and a good professor. Pretty pointless class but you just have to do assignments once a week and its a pretty easy class to pass. lectures aren't mandatory
Great guy. Passionate about what he is teaching. Would be more fun in person, but he did his best to accommodate :) definitely take one of his classes if you have the chance
I like paul becuase he's inspirational about what he teaches. he's passionate and cares. however, some of the course gets repetitive and boring. there are also active outside of class such as touring the KIA and seeing plays put on at wmu. overall good teacher and pretty easy A.
Professor Solomon is extremely knowledgeable about art. He authored the textbook and it has great videos added in it. On Tuesdays were scheduled WebEx but they were recorded so you could watch them if you couldn't attend. This was a good time to ask questions. He replies to emails quickly. He has a student assistant who is also very helpful.
The class was pretty easy, but he has a very clear political bias. There were some interesting things that I learned in the class, but I feel like there was some stuff I could have done better without knowing.
I am confused why there are so many negative reviews. I honestly think it is because people are lazy and want an easy class. Mr Solomon made sure to help me get every assignment turned in for credit. Art classes like his require studio time and if you are hoping for little work then you should not be an art major. I enjoyed his class he was great.
Hottest Prof I've ever had.
I took this class online this year and for the most part it was easy. 1 quiz and 1 reading a week (sometimes a test). The textbook that is required is the book Prof. Solomon wrote so you can not find the answers online to the quizzes, you have to read the textbook. The tests are all on the virtual reviews he does. Easy class if u put in effort.
Assignments assigned as an afterthought with no explanations or rubrics, sold his book to us but it wasn't relevant to the class, and the goal of the class was to learn color theory, when he instead taught about Judaism and his personal world views. Title 9 barred him from teaching a studio after a few reports halfway through so someone took over.
Sold us a book saying it was mandatory, then ended up posting chapter by chapter on eLearning for free. Tests and quizzes had obscure and odd questions with his own answers that don't match up to any credible sources on Google. The questions could include quoting someone who doesn't even show up when searched or even directly quoting himself.
