This teacher is amazing! Dr. Stabford is very clear in his explanations and makes a very difficult subject fairly easy. He is funny and makes class fun. Very good.
He really cares about the students - he will never make you feel stupid and will always take as much time as necessary (some people abuse this!) to make sure everyone understands the course material.
It's amazing how thoroughly and effectively he teaches. He frequently pauses to make sure everyone is up to speed and is happy to clarify any concepts.
He speaks with a british accent, and he draws really stupid pictures in the middle of his word problems, but he does such a great job at explaining everything, you can't help but like him. He is one of the most genuine and respectful (not to mention one of the best) math professors you will ever meet.
great professor, really nice Brit, makes sure everyone is on the same page before moving on. Quite simply the easiest class I've taken.
He is the nicest guy! His teaching methods are great! If you need extra help he is available and not put out by slow math people like me! I really liked him!
awesome teacher!! british!!! he is so funny and teaches great!! helps alot!1 always availible!!! highly reccomend!!
Went to class but hardly study but still got an A. Good professor, easy A class.
I had a B average until he took over teaching for semester. I dont know why everyone seems to like him. He gives very poor reviews and no calculator allowed on exams. you decide.
This teacher is amazing and made me interested in Calculus again after a horrible experience with my calc 1 professor. Go to his office hours for any help...he will be happy to help you understand anything and everything. Gives in-class reviews for the tests and final. Quizzes are def something you need to take seriously!! Also witty!!!
awesome
Prof Stanford is OUTSTANDING!!! If you have to take matrices, take him. Easy A
This is the best math teacher!! He has a calming voice and explains everything well. DO NOT miss class, you'll miss too much information.Go visit him in his office so he knows you. Take notes, review hw and notes, Quizzes are good to keep you in tuned with whats going on.Review quizzes for test time.Super nice Prof and very helpful!! Highly recomm!
Great Prof!!! Go to class. Take notes, take Quizzes seriously.. his grading system for the semester is meant to help you. Don't mess it up. Very witty and his keen sense of humor will make you laugh!! He is very helpful. Help him get to know you! He's the best Prof for Calc or Matrices.. I took him for both!!
He is a great teacher!!! And very funny!! He makes sure everyone understands what he is doing and he goes in slow-mo steps on the hard problems!
Great Instructor!! I really recommend taking him for Matrices
Easy class and good professor but he tends to over explain everything and make it more complicated than it is (you will write down a page of notes for something that can be explained in 2 lines). One thing that I wasn't aware of was that quizzes as a whole are almost 25% of your grade, not 10% like other classes so make sure to be in class on Wed!
Very Scatter-Brained. he will explain one question but bounce all over the board to explain it. Takes role every class, Quiz every week and counts for 25% of your grade so be sure to study. LOTS OF NOTES! No homework. Not the worst teacher I have ever had but def not the easiest.
Mr. Stanford is a very funny guy. I enjoyed his class, and i love the way he teaches Math; very straightforward teachings. Loved the class!
Proceed with Caution. Extremely nice professor, but very abstract. This is not the fundamental Matrices & Vectors course you can appreciate, if you are a business major. Quizzes worth 25 points; rarely comes from homework. Quiz scores represent 50% of your grade. Good Luck!
Ive had this professor for several math classes, most recently this last semester for Matrices. I don't know why everyone says quizzes count for 25%. He bases your grade off your final, two tests and your quiz average. The final is 40%, and he then does 30%, 20%, 10% with the remaining three, where your lowest grade is weighted the least. Great!
This guy is awesome! He's an Absolutely amazing professor, that will explain to you everything you could possibly ask him pertaining to the subject. He respects all his students' questions and is a fair grader. He's arguably the best teacher I've had thus far in Mathematics. Also... The guy is just so funny!
Best teacher I have ever had! He is a little quirky and scattered with words at times but that is what made the class awesome! His notes are awesome! I needed the book only for practice problems. There are a series of quizes, one each week. So class is manditory in that sense. The two lowest quizes were dropped and the 3 exams count heavily.
Likely the best math teacher I've ever seen -- no joke. British accent. Very upbeat, good-humored, and funny! Speaks loud and clearly. Writes legibly. Is VERY clear about optional homework and what the weekly quizzes will cover. Only bad thing is that he spends a long time explaining the math "theory", and doesn't leave much time to do examples.
At first I really disliked him. I tend to learn from examples, and Stanford sticks to theory. I realised though that because him, I truly understood the material. I ended up with a high A in the class with less effort than I originally anticipated. Plus :: awesome accent, amusing guy, very fair grader.
Lectures are a waste of time for all he does is go over the examples in the book. Just study over quiz questions and the homework that are given; examples from the book are mostly not on the tests. Always keep up with the work and you will make a decent grade.
Horrible, horrible teacher. I attend class to learn examples that are not in the book VERBATIM. Who cares if he makes quirky jokes and has a delightful accent? His teaching skills are garbage in comparison with the other math professors I've had at UTD
Stanford is one of the worst teachers of all time. He strives to make students feel inferior while at the same time, teaching next to nothing. The textbook is subpar in its explanations, which would be fine, EXCEPT that he copies the examples word-for-word! He is literally a book on tape, yet somehow gets almost every example problem wrong.
I wasn't really fond of Stanford. He's quite hard to understand and sometimes his handwriting is all over the board. Works from the textbook. He can be fair and at other times, not. Overall, a pretty tough class but possible.
Didn't like him or the class. If you want to do well, you'll pretty much have to teach yourself. He's not very helpful; often, someone will ask a question, and he'll misunderstand and give a totally irrelevant answer. Makes frequent mistakes, too.
Great Accent.
Great accent, tries to be funny. :) He makes A LOT of mistakes on his examples, so you have to watch out for when he messes up and ask about it or you will be confused. For the most part, I learned a lot from his teaching. Had to read over somethings in the book to get a really good understanding though. Overall, I'd take him again.
Amazing Guy. Funny & Helpful. Get him if you want to learn something
This professor doesn't teach much. Everything he puts on the board comes from his notes, so it's pretty boring. People kept leaving the class so he began taking attendance twice some sessions. If you follow the book, you'll be all right. I went to tutoring and the TA's accent was so thick that was wasted time. Doable A if you study.
no one laughs at his jokes.poor guy.he has a british accent and a constant style of shirts tucked in and old school jeans.i always went to sleep in his classes because i knew all the stuff he taught
Quiz, notes, and homework due every week. The notes are an easy 100. Quizzes are about 3-5 questions and total of 25 points. Homework is online but there are practice problems w/ full solution, which are very similar to the real homework problems. The tests are pretty easy. Stanford is funny and makes the class interesting. Take him or McCary!
He does make a lot of mistakes when he's solving problems, so that was negative for me because I am not that good at math to start with. Other than that, he is nice professor and funny too
I had somewhat of an understanding of what he taught before I took this class, just listening to him confused me. Useless to even go to class. Homework and notes are easy 100, quizzes are easy if you study the HW. Tests are easy if you write down the problems from the quizzes and some notes on your cheat sheet provided for tests. Take another prof.
He has a British accent and a white beard. Has funny stamps that say that you are basically doing a problem wrong. THQ's,online HW, and in class quizzes every week. Takes attendance ALL THE TIME which sucks. Meets on FRIDAY NIGHTS for exams. Final was May 11.
An awesome teacher. Had a hard time understanding his british accent, but he makes it look so easy.
Well, he continuously messes up on the examples he works on during class. Which btw are SO easy compared to the assignments that are assigned online. Need the textbook because it gives you that code to set up a Webassign account, or purchase the online book (what I did). Last exam is comprehensive.
Great Teacher and funny. He is respectful to all his students and easy to approach.
Professor Stanford is the best math teacher I have ever had. He is the only professor that has made math easy for me to understand. Great guy.
OMG this class is so boring and insanely confusing. I recommend taking MR. Patel.
I would not recommend this Professor if math is a subject you struggle with or does not come easy to you. His examples are easy but he jumps around a lot while doing the examples. This makes it near to impossible to write notes. He does not cover material that will potentially be on the test. This makes application to the problems extremely hard.
Elementary Number Theory with him was so interesting! He's an easy grader and very wonderful. I highly recommend taking theory with him.
TAKE HIM!! He tries to make learning calc as fun as he can. He's a bit goofy, and can sometimes get off track, but he knows his stuff and is a great person!
Lovely British accent, however, unless you are already quite familiar & comfortable with calculus, you might find this class difficult. He is very scatterbrained and talks very fast so the material doesn't come across as clearly. The weekly math reviews held by the mathlab however are very helpful. He is a very good person, just all over the place.
He is great!
If math doesn't come easy to you, I don't recommend Dr. Stanford. He's a great person but can get a little confusing at times. And like every math class, if you don't come to class, you will probably fall behind and end up failing.
I don't recommend taking Stanford unless you've already had some experience with calculus, or if you're really good at math. His lectures were extremely confusing because he jumps around a lot. I was only able to understand him because I started sitting in another class.
2 Homework a week. 1 quiz a week. 4 Tests. Hard grader but class isnt that bad. Im not a math person but I got an A-.
If you are a mathsciencecomputer person this will be the easiest math class you've taken. We business majors are lucky. But if you aren't a math person, this IS STILL AN EASY class. BUT LOTS OF WORK. Prof is really nice and his teaching is clear, he also has a great attitude but is pretty strict. Easy for some but hard for others & LOTS of work.
Linear algebra is a standardized class and pretty much everyone I know struggles with it. The concepts taught in class and labs are easy, but the homework is HARD. Be prepared to get outside help. The reviews ARE the tests, so practically memorize them and you'll do great. Dr. Stanford is an entertaining professor. Lectures can be long though.
He is SUPER British but has good examples and metaphors to explain harder math concepts that math problems alone won't do. You almost never get out of class early but he's an interesting character and makes the math understandable.
He might be okay for other classes, but this Number Theory class was unclear. Very little assignments so it is hard to study for the tests. It is also hard to find references to help as well. At least half the class dropped.
His Number Theory class is absolutely brutal. Do not take this unless you like very abstract math and are ready for something hard! The homework assignments were rare, but took an extremely long time. Paul Stanford, however, is a very entertaining and nice person. The lectures were very engaging. The tests are tough but curved.
His class was extremely boring to me and I had a hard time staying focused on what he was saying. Take Home Quizzes every week followed by an in-class quiz on basically the same questions. Very helpful online reviews that will give you extra points on exams.
He definitely knows his stuff, but I disliked the way he presented information. He hardly gives any examples, and when he does, he uses letters rather than numbers. Tests aren't too bad, but you do have to study for them. The one thing that kept me interested was his accent and vocabulary. Also, you will very rarely leave class early
I enjoyed the structure of the class. There were take home quizzes, online homework and in class quizzes every week. I was worried I would not do well in this class but it turned out to be fairly straight forward. I loved professor Stanford's wit. You can tell he enjoys the subject.
about as helpful as a sack of potatoes. goes too fast. explain things like u can read his thoughts. teaching isn't his natural talent, no reinforcement for u to practice/master concepts. he doesn't give u online homework and doesn't review or even ask in the next lecture to make sure u got everything 100% mean once the section is over- it's over.
Unless you already understand vectors then take his class. He doesn't give a review for exams!!! And will give you a short review on the day of the exam!!!
This professor tends to give fast lectures, which can be a little difficult to keep up with the pace. The overall concepts are mostly things that we already know. If this class is difficult for you, I suggest to read the book prior the lecture, this will help you better grasp the concepts. I would suggest taking this class you will enjoy it.
I think his class is quite unorganized. He gives examples and everything, but it just seems like he isn't able to put his point across. Also, he's kinda boring. The class itself is quite easy. There were weekly in-class quizes and take home quizzes too. If you kind of pay attention in class, it's a very easy A!
App Calc 1 is the same for all teachers based on the quizzes and homeworks. Stanford himself is okay in my opinion. Pretty straightforward teaching and gives plenty of examples. If you're stuck on something and need to ask, be sure to raise your voice since he can't hear too well. Overall Stanford is Standard. Definitely not a bad teacher.
I failed this class last semester.. now that I am retaking it with a different professor I see what the problem is... Stanford just isn't good at tEaching, I agree if you understand it already its ok but for someone who doesn't... he'll overcomplicate things and create a big mess in your head. the way he teaches no wonder he always makes mistakes!!
It is not usual to find a professor that has such great moral character. Very rare. I wonder why people are complaining, he goes through practically everything in an understandable way.
Great professor that always tries to explain the material in different ways to make sure you understand. The quizzes are take-home quizzes so you can ask for help and use your notes. His reviews are always the day of the test and he'll go over everything that will be on it. P.S. - His English accent makes paying attention easier. 10/10 recommend.
Read the chapter before the lecture. It helps. I had never even heard of matrices or matrix operations. If you read the chapter in the book before his lecture it all makes sense. Read the chapters pay attention in class and you should do well. What he teaches in class is on the weekly take home quizzes and also on the exams.
Do not miss class. He talks so fast that every lecture is a week worth of learning. I rarely was able to follow what he was saying. He is a very smart man and very kind, his teaching style just wasn't for me. My advice if you take him; read the book, study with friends in the class and ask questions. That's the only way I passed.
There's not much class involvement. He does example problems all the way through and then asks for questions. He goes very in-depth on certain simple topics and it makes it confusing sometimes. He tries his best to make class interesting and cracks a few jokes here and there. If you have already taken a calculus class before it will be a breeze.
One of the best professors I've ever encountered. I have always struggled with math but he makes the concepts and problems so easy to understand. Yes, you will need to attend class and put in some effort but if you are there for the lectures he explains everything thoroughly and does a lot of practice problems. Tests are also straightforward. A++++
Lectures are a bit dry but the material is explained well and is easy to follow as long as you show up to class.
Bad prof DO NOT TAKE HIM! I got an A+ in his class cause I went to tutoring and Changsong's class after him, take changsong instead. Stanford doodles, and talks nonsense the majority of class. He gets his own example problems wrong, and is just a horrific teacher. I would give him a 1.5 cause he is very nice and caring, but in the end of he's trash
I absolutely loved Stanford. Every professor for Math 1325 has the same testing/homework and grading criteria, therefore rating Stanford based off of homework or exams when its based off of the math department is unfair. He is a great professor, I enjoyed his lectures and he is very good at explaining and showing examples. Attending class will help
Professor Stanford is a fun and awesome professor for those who are starting to take calculus. He goes above and beyond in his lectures to teach and show examples as close as possible to questions that would appear in THQs, Quizzes and Tests. Great choice!
Dr. Stanford is easily one of the best professors I've had at UTD. He keeps his lectures upbeat and entertaining, he explains every step of a problem thoroughly, and he uses plenty of examples that apply to various types of problems. All the grading criteria is clear due to the math department's standards.
Lectures were super interesting! Didn't do well at first since I didn't work hard, but I started going to office hours, which helped A LOT. He is more than happy to help students who struggle and is trying to do better.
He is a very nice British man with a soothing accent. I always struggled with calc but he has a very calm collected way of teaching that helps me understand everything. His handwriting isn't the best but he explains everything in great detail and answers every question he gets to the best of his ability. The class has a lot of hw and tests.
Professor Stanford makes the course significantly more difficult that it needs to be. The amount of work he gives is the equivalent of 2 4000 level Math courses put together. Tests were 8 pages long and he only mentioned the topics for the exam 2 hours before the test. Lectures and notes were not made available. Avoid at all costs, horrible teacher
Hardest class ever took. The amount of effort put in the class is equivalent to 3 math classes combined. Proof heavy. Homeworks usually take at least 8-10 hours to complete since they are all proofs. The professor does not post any class material such as video lectures or lecture notes. Avoid at all costs!!!!
Professor is great and very knowledgeable in mathematics, but the handwriting for online courses does require a bit of getting used to. Homework are decently hard but reinforces the concepts well. Exams are quite hard (if you're not used to number theory), but there is a pretty good curve. Clear instructions and grading criteria.
Professor Stanford is a genuine and a good professor to be in class with. Most of the time, the paper homework and online homework is similar to what is taught in class. If you want to ace the class, you must ace the homework and quizzes, and the way to do so is to study examples. Overall, easy class, good professor, and would recommend to take.
Professor Stanford is one of the best math professors I've ever had. He is very good at explaining things to someone who has not learned calculus before. I actually enjoyed learning calculus because he made it seem so simple and did not overcomplicate anything. The tests and weekly quizzes were very straightforward and there were no surprises.
