brings down other students' grammatical capabilities by belittling them.

good class. read the material and the tests aren't bad
he was clear, but reading lots of books then never talking about them sucked
This was the worst class by the worst teacher ever!
horrible....i felt like rip van winkle in class.Books were as bad as the class
boobs
I Do Not Wish this type of torture onto anyone
boring -- but i read no books and curve got me a C-....good if your lazy!
read the books and you'll pass the test. good class

I left this class hating the Songhay people... that's all he talks about... Songhay, Songhay, Songhay.
Loves to talk about the Songhai ppl, displays an extreme amount of self-control when people don't turn off their cell phones, I used to be an apprentice to a sorceror! , he shows 2-3 films, the religious cult one with the snakes is disturbing, good prof.
I think he is a very good professor if you are interested in Anthropolgy. He has a lot to offer
dudes a f ing genius...great teacher...learned intellectual...one of the world's leading africanists...and a real jerk sometimes
If you enjoy bestime stories, you will like this class. Garunteed to put anyone to sleep at any time of day. From his clothes to his freaking stories, he is a true anthropologist.
This is one of the most brilliant people I have ever come across in my life. How often do you get to learn anthropology from someone who used to be an apprentice to an African sorcerer? How cool is that?
No text book. Everything is by lectures, which are boring as hell. If you miss class or fall asleep (which everyone does) you'r screwed.
He's an amazing and intelligent man. His lectures can be a bit boring when you have the class for 3 hours straight but he's cool about taking breaks. His tests aren't bad, the movies with giraffe slaying are a bit much but otherwise two thumbs up!!
I thought Dr.P was very interesting. He is articulate, intelligent, insightful and helps to ensure the students gain a true understanding of what it means to be an anthropologist. He completely rocks!!!!!!!!!!!
he is the most broing person ever to exist on this planet. His monotone lectures portray the information in the most tedious, usless way. trust me.....you would rather be runover by a truck then get this guy
Very monotone but not TOO boring. His talks are interesting, just not lively
Really interesting topic matter it taught, but only small attempts are made to have the information stick in your brain. Topics will be brought up and delt with swiftly, where more elaboration could probably be used. He's there for help though if needed.
Had him for Withcraft, Religion, etc. Lectures are boring as hell, films are almost always subtitiled. He's pretty picky and demanding. Has published many books, some aren't bad. No official textbook, some req'd texts are barely used. Final paper is hard
anyone who says that dr. stoller is boring, is not listening to what he is saying. the material is really interesting and the work load is bearable. also, he is a very intelligent person with awesome experiences
He may be difficult, vague, and scatterbrained sometimes, but he is deffinately the most intelligent person I have ever met. If you go to his office hours caus you dont understand something, you will come out knowing more than you could ever imagine!!
No text book, bring a tape recorder to class if you plan on undertsanding his tests- Always come to class! He gives no extra credit- It is the hardest Intro class ever! If you have a good GPA and plan on keeping it dont take this class!
I need to warn everyone currently taking his INTRO class---BRING A TAPE RECORDER!! And sometimes that doesn't even help! THis was the hardest class I have ever taken! NO textbook and he assigns 4--that's right 4-- ethnography to read for the 3 tests. And that is your final grade--no attendence poin
Dr. Stoller is great. He's always willing to help and very clear about what he wants as well as lenient. His lectures, while sometimes dry, are very interesting if you listen. Love his classes.
Intellegent, interesting, and helpful. If you know how to take good notes youll do fine in his class. He wont let you slide, but if you study and read, you'll do well. I also had him for magic, religion and witchcraft which was one of the best courses ever. demands intellegence from his students.
I dont care what anyone says, this man is a great professor, and is a very insightful and intelligent man. take his magic and religions class and you will not be sorry
He gives generous curves to our final grades so stay tuned (about a full letter grade). He is no perfect professor and everyone has flaws. He is a unique and he practices what he preache. He did various fieldworks and published many books.
Do not take this class...I'm warning you! It's so boring and really really hard!
his tests screw with your head. take another anth prof to maintain your GPA. i attended every class, took notes, studied AND read the 4 books and still had trouble on the tests and I am an A/B student! ^^AVOID HIM^^ He needs to retire.
This prof. is 1 of the rare 1's. he's great, interesting & very inteligent. he knows what he's talking about. for those who complained...apparently anthro isnt your major, so choose someone else, if you really arent interested in anthropology.
well hes very intelligent, but the tests are ridiculously hard. he does give a curve- but it doesnt matter b/c he posts the grades..and only ONE person got above an 80!..so that just goes to show NOBODY does well..its annoying b/c i read all 4 books and still did poorly..hes interesting though!
I agree with all the negative comments. He seems like a nice guy and could be interesting with all the "adventures" he's had, but the class is unbearably dry. (I fell asleep almost every day).
Stoller is a very nice man. He will be very accomodating to your needs. The class is a little boring and sometimes confusing. Dont take this class thinking that its about european witchcraft. this is african witchcraft, not pagan and neopagan witchcraft. Grades pretty fair too.
If you're willing to work, you are going to get a lot out of this class. He is an excellent teacher, especially if you show some enthusiasm. If you're not willing to put in some effort...well, what the heck are you spending 12 grand a year for?
i liked dr. stoller's intro anthro class. The first test scared me to death (he refers to himself in the questions)because I only studied for a little while. I still got a C. I also failed the next test and got a very low C on the final. I ended up with a B in the class. He gives extra credit opps as well. He's very smart.
He makes a mean martini, and is very pleasant to talk with. perhaps that is the effect of the alcohol...but no, he is a rather interesting man.
Very intelligent.Interesting lectures.Tough tests, but generous grader. Two of the books were boring-there is 4.Oh and he's SEXY!First man i've ever been turned on by bc of his BRAINS.He's so intriguing to me.I would love to go to dinner with this man and just listen to him talk about his experiences. His intellectual capacities are phenomenal. ;)
I took the night class, it was boring as hell but easy. You have to read 4 books and I didnt read till the day before the test and I did fine. There are only 3 tests. I would take him again.
Incredibly confusing. Constantly got verrrrry off topic! I found this class incredibly useless...and i used to be very interested in Anthropology. Nice guy, but strange.
this is the most boring professor EVER.
He's very interesting and has a lot of stories to tell but I get lost in his lectures. He doesn't write on the board so if you are a visual learner this would not be the class for you because you're on your own for notes. The tests are hard, I failed the first one then barely passed the second one and I studied hard for both!!
Easy A if you have two functional limbs to take notes. Careful, though, he's a wizard. He studied under some African medicine man and can vex you if you don't attend class!
He was a great teacher. Very interesting material, very thoughtful. He is
He is a great guy. Very interesting class. It is all lecture so be prepared to write a lot. Pay attention to details. Also, he will give you a few books to read that you're being tested on. I'd take him again. Fair grader, gives a curve.
Great guy. Very enthusastic. Loves life and education. Very helpful and willing to share all of his ideas experiences with his students.
Stoller lectures, you take notes, and he tests you on details easily overlooked or things from the book that are not general ideas. But he curves tests b/c he knows they're hard. Not a bad guy.
Extremely intelligent prof. Trilingual in English, French and the language of the Songhay. You will learn a great deal about different cultures such as the Ju/'hoansi, Muruncundu and Songhay. He makes terms understandable and keeps the class interesting. Take notes, READ THE BOOKS, study and you'll get an A on all 3 tests.
A great professor who allows you expand your mind on the world. You have to read the books and take notes on what he clearly writes on the board. Only teacher I have ever had who made me want to come to class because he was real about his expierences. If you are looking for a joke class this is not it, but it is a great learning expierence.
There is no homework, except to read the books given. Go to class and you'll be fine. There are 3 exams and those are the majority of your grade. He curves everything so if you end up with bad exam scores, your overall grade will be fine.
not my favorite teacher at WCU... he gives a lot of notes so be prepared to write his test are very difficult but at the end of the semester he curves it.. read the books yeah they are boring but the books have a lot of information thats on the test other than that just listen to him and i promise you will learn something new everyday....
I took a 3-hour (summer) evening class. I came into the class later than the rest because of severe problems with a foreign language class. His tests are difficult, but he is fascinating. Really listen in class-to his experiences and lectures. Also, participate! We had to write a term paper near the end which was helpful to my grade! A for Dr.S!!
Very interesting class and very interesting person! His personal stories are really cool to hear. Take notes, theyll help a lot with the tests. Definitely recommend this class!
Sometimes kind of confusing to know what to study for in the test, a lot of text books. We only had 3 exam. Do not think anyone in our class got an A on any of the exams, but he is nice with curving the grade, so as long as you are there and takesTake notes, but his exams is hard, because you are asked a lot about what he has said.
Read the books, (especially his) go to class, take notes and you'll be fine. He curves generously so it's not that bad of an outcome.
I never had a more arrogant or pompous professor in my college career. You don't have to ask the Dr. anything about himself because it won't take long for him to brag about where he's been or the famous anthropologists he knows. Write your papers in French and maybe he'll be more easy on your grading, don't expect to be lauded for that feat though
Dr. Stoller knows what he is talking about! You use four novels outside of class that are on the tests. The class is set up for 3 tests and the last being during finals. Every class is a lecture and attendance counts. But, he lets class out early everyday by at least 15 minutes. Great class! TAKE DR. STOLLER for ANT 102 and ONLY him. Not that hard.
Ridiculous professor. Extremely arrogant. Thinks the world revolves around his class...Impossible to follow along with. Went to every class, took notes and studied for the first test. Walked out of the test feeling ok...maybe receiving low b high c and recieved a 48...
Hardest 100 level class I've ever taken. GET OUT NOW!!!
Professor Stoller is a great teacher. He is filled with information on every topic that is covered in the course. His tests require you to fully understand the material. If you are an intelligent and motivated individual, you will get an A or B in this course. If you are lazy, you might fail. Simple put, this is a hard, but beneficial course.
He's been doing this a while so he speaks from exp. His exams are essay (sometimes in class, sometimes take home) and there are a few papers. 4 books to read (i read about 50% of each). If you're looking for an easy class maybe don't look in the anthropology department...
Class is made up of three tests, each incredibly hard. Knowing the material is not enough, went to every class, feverishly took notes, and barely got a C. Don't take hm.
Professor stellar I think is quite misunderstood. He is a great professor, and passionate about his work. His papers are not difficult if you understand the material, which is why you go to class. His tests however I hear are damn near impossible but overall very helpful and understanding!
extremely hard tests which i studied for for days and still barely passed. tests are curved and only 3 of them (final not cumulative) are the only things going into your grade. must pay attention to what he says because his power points are only an outline to the lecture. must read 3-4 books which you are tested on as part of the exams.
His class is all based on free-speaking lectures, four chapter books, and in-class movies. His teaching style is hard to follow, and you have to come to class, or else you will lose points on your final grade. The only grades are three exams, which are pretty difficult. At least he curves them. This is a very difficult class for a 100 level
I am a bio major and have never had a class this hard in my life. He literally tests you on his opinions and makes you buy a book he wrote. I spent almost all my time on it and only got a C. His lectures are boring and it's not clear what you're being taught or what's going to be on this test. STEER CLEAR!
This class was impossible for me. I went to every lecture, sat in the first row, took crazy notes, studied for days, and barely got a C. The tests are all opinion questions, and the notes don't help at all. Also, the only grades all semester are 3 tests.. do don't screw up
You could study the information he gave you for hours and still fail the exam. Do not take this class with Stoller. You will regret it. His tests are based off his opinions and there's never a right answer. This class is way too difficult to be a gen Ed. Plus he's a horrible professor
The class is drawn out & he teaches by putting main points on a power point and elaborating on them as he goes(no written notes) The exams are hard (there is a 10 point curve on all of them but, the 10 points only make a difference if your close to passing)no homework, attendance is a must! This class actually made me want homework to help my grade
Worst professor ive ever had at west chester. He talks about things that arent even on the exam the entire lecture time. Then you get to the exam and he admits to not teaching you some of the information.
His class is border-line impossible. I actually paid attention to his lectures (which is very difficult) and took crazy notes and studied for days and still did poorly on the exams. He expects you to read four 250+ page books which is ridiculous. even if you understand the material, you can still easily fail the class cause he words them so weirdly
This class in difficult. He puts power point slides up with little information and then lectures the whole class. You are expected to read numerous textbooks with no understanding about what information you should focus on or know for the exam. I pay attention during his lectures and study for days before his exams and still get below average grade
Stoller's class is pretty hard. He puts vague, general subjects in bullet form on the powerpoint and then talks about them in great detail in a lecture so if you skip class you won't really be able to understand what's going on. He does give extra credit, and if you study for his tests they are moderately easy, but you have to be reading every day.
Professor Stoller gets a bad rap but he's really a nice guy, he loves what he studies and wants you to love it to. He can be a little unclear but he does give extra credit just study your notes!! if you go to his office hours and show you want to do well you will
Great man. Definitely have to show up to understand what you need for tests. Each one has 50 questions, some are just on there for fun. Not too challenging, and he curves them all. Offers extra credit assignments, just do them, it's worth it. Ask him questions if you have any, he's very nice and loves telling stories
He is intelligent, but arrogant. Stoller can come off rude, but utilize his office hours. His tests are difficult, so put in effort and do all of the extra credit. If you plan on taking an easy elective, do not take this course.
Amazing professor. Really teaches you things you want to know, lectures are thick with info but engaging. Would always recommend.
Terrible professor in my opinion. Lectures are very hard to keep up with, and he keeps the class uninterested. He talks about things that are never on his exams. He never gives homework, so if you don't do well on the exams, then good luck. Exams are very hard. Do yourself a favor and do not take his class.
Honestly not that bad of a teacher. His lectures can be boring and drone on at times but as long as you pay attention and read you'll pass. Also he curves his grades way up at the end of the semester and curves tests up very high as well. I would take him again.
I did not enjoy this class. The lectures did not have to do with the tests and class dragged on for hours it seemed.
Never in my whole life have I dreaded a class more than this one. He lectures for years and puts up these power points with bullet points that make no sense. He only gives exams, no quizzes, no projects, no homework, nothing. So if you do bad on the exams then good luck!
In the beginning I HATED this class. I thought the lectures dragged on and it was insanely boring. But after the first test I started forcing myself to pay attention and he is a really interesting guy. I definitely would not take him if you are a visual learner because he just stands up there and talks you need to take detailed notes to do well.
worst anthro prof at wcu. do not take. lecture heavy and makes you read a ton of boring books then doesn't even discuss them in class
Not many grades in this course, 3 tests make up the entire class grade so its important to do good on these, Stoller is a interesting guy but gets very rambly and off topic constantly, most of what you learn in class and take notes on will just be random things possibly not on the test. Its hard to tell whats actually important in this class
Professor Stoller was the smartest professor I've ever had. He knows things about the world and the people in it that most people have no idea about. I throughly enjoyed every single one of his lectures! I thought the tests were easy if you payed attention and also he curves. He has a lot of wisdom and will teach you things no other teacher will.
lectures were boring and he talked for the entire class. material wasn't super interesting and tests were hard
Stoller is one of the smartest and moat experienced professors around. However his powerpoints are very vague. You must pay attention to what he says and he will not repeat himself. You will be very co fused on what material will be on the test
Professor Stoller is a great guy and I enjoy his class and the lectures he gives. The class is difficult although if you go to class and take notes you will pass. He also gives extra credit opportunities to all students to help boost your grade. He does make you buy his own book though which is annoying .
Your whole grade is out of three tests but he gives extra credit so do all the extra credit assignments!! That's what will take your B to an A. Read all the books or at least summaries, there will be questions about them on the test. He was very knowledgeable and always knew what he was talking about I just never knew what would be on the test.
Paul is a super smart person. Very educated and wise. But, his lectures are brutal. If you dont take extremely diligent notes, youre pretty much destined to fail. Wouldnt recommend as a gen ed class. Thank god wcu is doing the alternative grading option for online classes. I have a 4.0 but his class wouldve brought it way down. Dont take.
He knows what he's talking about but doesnt make understanding the material easy. class is graded off 3 papers, 5-10 pgs each. If you dont understand the material, the papers are near impossible. He doesn't really explain anything and expects you to understand everything right away. He is a tough grader and has very specific requirements for papers
Stoller was very disorganized in his lectures. It's obvious that he knows what he's talking about, but he is all over the place in how he teaches. He gives extra credit randomly throughout the course so the class is passable. That being said, his lectures are boring so if possible I would recommend another prof.
Never knew what would be on tests, whole grade is out of your three exam grades, extra credit is an option but he grades very strictly on the extra credit so it doesnt even feel worth doing
His stories!
Professor Stoller is a formal guy. He gives great lectures and goes over topics well. He doesn't leave students much space to ask questions, but if you do ask he'll give you a good answer. He wasn't the best during office hours and didn't help much. Please make a friend in the class and attend every class! Good class and interesting topics!
Let me start off by saying this is one of the most difficult courses I have taken at WCU. Every class was an hour-long lecture on basically the same thing. I think he was on the same slide for 3 class periods. That being said the exams were super difficult, despite being online. If you have to take an ANT clas take it with some one else.
This professor is a good guy, but an absolutely awful professor. He didn't respond to one email the entire semester and never update grades for the class (just turned them into the university). The tests were super hard for literally no reason (the way he worded things was just weird) & he took attendance everyday. Just seems he has a god complex.
this wasn't even a class on anthropology. he just talks about his trip. would be useful as a reference or in an African studies class, but the class was based only on that. very little structure and grade was made up of only 4 quizzes and some extra credit. he's smart and knows what he's talking about but it was extremely hard for a gen ed
