Dr. Toscano is extremely helpful and is an all-around nice guy. He teaches a difficult subject, but makes his classes quite easy to pass as long as you put in the time.
this introductory chem class is made exciting by his great teaching skills. he is an excellent professor and is extremely helpful. despite this class being a lecture, mr toscano makes it still feel like a small environment.
Alright, I went to the first week of class like a good little girl. Then I quickly realized that attendance is completely unecessary. Everything he mentions in class is in the book. His voice killed me, it was a certain pitch that just drove me insane. The one good thing: optional final.
Prof. Toscano really cares about the students. He is pretty accessible unlike some (okay, most) of his colleagues....especially the pompous Block and Hauser who make you feel like you are imposing even though you ARE A STUDENT and they ARE YOUR PROFESSORS. Knows his stuff.Cool guy too
Simply a great chemistry teacher. Read the chapters, go to him for help for anyquestions and do those practice questions-and you'll do fine. If you put the work into the class, you will do fine. His tests are very fair, and he is always available for help. He is a very dedicated professor who cares!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GUY!!!!AWESOME TEACHER THAT CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS
This guy is amazing. He is by far one of the smartest professors at Albany, and I almost took more chem just because he was such an awesome guy, and I'm an English major!
even though i find the material to be hard, he does a lot of pratice problems in lecture. doesn't really write anything on the board. hes a good teacher. gives you pratice exams to study from and ocassionally review sheets
Dr T Phd is by far the best prof that i have had thus far. he is always available at ALL times, hes very willing to help and funny to boot. lectures move fast but need to put in the time by yourself to do well.seek him out if you can, it will be worth it! i switched majors to chem largley b/c of him
Toscano is quite possibly the best and most caring professor at UA. Do not take chem from anyone else. He makes chem a lot more easy to live through and has lots of funny quotes.
This class is made alot easier because Prof. Toscano is such a good teacher. He gives practice exams that don't change much. He's a good guy that is always available to talk to.
Terrible. He rambles on and he skips over major sections. Beware his tests even if you know the material he is sure to ask the question in a way that is sure to screw you.
Was really a helpful professor. Very lively and provided lots of help when it was needed. His tests are fairly difficult if you don't crack open a book or go to class. Walking definition of "tough but fair." Drops lowest exam grade if you take the cumulative final. Was fairly interesting and occassionally spun off into off stories. :)
he is a good professor beacuse he makes sure that you understand the work. He takes time out of his life to help you. He would not put anything on the test that he did not go over in his lectures.
For the record, I HATE chemistry with a passion, but I have to take it and this man is amazing. He's funny, he's clear, he's very available, he doesn't try to trick you... if you can get him I HIGHLY recommend it. You can't go wrong with him. Period.
hope you like to teach yourself
I was dreading taking chemistry and i loved this course. He is the best chemistry professor available and is very fair. It is definately worth getting up at 9:20am for. He's the best college professor i've had so far. He is also easy to reach outside of the classroom. He's an outstanding professor!!!
He was very fair. His tests were short and simple and sometimes had bonus questions. Put in the work and its an easy A.
Goes to fast in class, its hard to keep up with him, however he allways makes himself available to meet with you if your having trouble.
This guy can't teach. He should also get into the 21st century and maybe use a powerpoint instead of putting everything on the dry erase board in a 500 seat lecture hall. He's dry, and boring like the subject he teaches.
Great guy, decent person, very smart. this guy is also my academic advisor so i see him a lot. GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND HIS EXTRA HELP SESSIONS, u will have ur ear chewed off about random stuff for half the time BUT he will help chem isnt meant to be easy. tests are easier then the lecture
Best chem teacher ever. Actually cares about his students. Gives review sheets and practice tests. Tests are straight foward. Can wait til hes teachin orgo
worst teacher ever: monotone voice, boring lectures, no visual aids, goes too fast with materials and its hard to take notes during class. hard to understand what hes teaching. gives syllabus with practice problems listed and gives practice tests and summary sheets for each chapter.
Taking his summer class. HARD!!! Tries to cram way to much into one day even though we have more than enough time to go a little bit slower. Puts problems on the board without explaining them, goes way to fast and when you get help he rattles on about something not related to chem for half the time. He is really nice, just not a great teacher.
Toscano clearly lives, eats, and breathes Chemistry. Go to lecture, pay attention to what he repeats, and read the book. He's really good about practice tests, and scaling. Really good actually. Take chem with him its your best bet.
Great teacher. Even if you dont go to class all you have to do is read the text and study with the practice exams. They are usually pretty similar to the actual exam.
I hated this class. He mumbles a lot, doesn't write the important stuff on the board, and after you copy something down he states that you " Don't have to worry about it" He has a lot of passion for this subject, but he just doesn't know how to teach it. I dreaded every class and test. I learned more from the labs then the class.
Don't take this class for a Natural Science req. unless you have to. This class will take up a majority of your study time and isn't worth the work. It's not easy despite what the previous comments say. There are 3 exams, 1 optional cumulative exam and all are hard. Makes friends, study hard and you should be alright. Otherwise, avoid this class.
Toscano is the man! Get to know him if you take his class. He is always willing to help and his tests are fair. I barely went to the lectures, but studying from the books was enough to get an A in the class.
Great chemistry professor. Try to switch to his class if you have anyone else.
Not a teacher for everyone; does it old school on the board, so be prepared to take your own notes. As far as Chem goes he's pretty straight forward; there are times you will copy something down that you don't need for exams, but gives you a better understanding. Overall, if you put in the homework time you'll pass with flying colors.
Basic chemistry itself isn't very intresting, but he was a good teacher. I felt well prepared for all the tests; he gives you review sheets of each chaper and practice exams before the tests. Overall, I think he's a great teacher.
very nice person!
Great Teacher... gives review sheets which helps alot. Interesting...knows what he is talking about ...with some work you will get a good grade. Highly Recommended
Really great guy, he is a good teacher and really cares that you understand the material. Take him for any chem courses
Really great teacher. Holds review sessions every friday even when the test isn't soon to make sure you're understanding the material. Make sure to do the homework problems assigned they really help to understand the material. Tests are straightforward. great teacher!!
If you can get him for orgo (or even gen chem) this is the guy to get. Really explained things clearly and in a way I could understand. He is also a really nice guy and very understanding if you have to make something up.
Intro. Chem: Dr. T was a great professor. He wants people in his class to understand. Other professors were into making people feel stupid and 'weeding out' pre-meds--he was NOT one of those. (I survived these classes--not sour grapes, but the CHM dept had issues) His concern is that you learn. He wishes to share his mastery of chem. A+++
I love mr. toscano!
Very Fair. Gives practice exams identical to real ones. Lots of homework to practice on but completion isn't mandatory. Don't buy the answer book, he supplies answers to suggested problems. Class moves fast but it is clear. This man lives for chemistry and teaching, or so it would seem. higly recommend
A bit boring, but his tests are pretty straightfoward. He gives things in class to help study for tests too, overall a good teacher.
Dr. Toscano has been my teacher for gen chem 1 and 2 and now for orgo I think he is by far the best teacher i have ever had. As long as you do the questions in the back of the book and go to review sessions if you need help it should be an A.
i had him for gen chem I & gen chem II. he was a lil odd but funny and really helpful. he would talk your ear off if you ever seen him duriing office hours, but you would leave with a better understanding. we used the book religiously and a lot of test questions came out of it.
Organic Chem is a hard subject and he does a fairly good job of making the material clear, but the tests are hard. multiple choice questions worth 4 points a peice will bring your grade down FAST. Study hard and you should do okay though - all the test questions come from the book.
He Extremely understanding helpful, He is easy at grading. Good at explaining concepts.
this guy is okay. if you go to his office he actually cares and will help you through it. the rest of the chemistry dept. can learn a lesson from him. he's chair of department and still has time for students...very rare in this dept
He's an all around good guy. Good professor, really wants you to succeed in his class, always has an interestingly strange story to tell. I highly recommend him. He's the best of the Chemistry department so far.
Decent, very fair professor. Just study from notes (you have to write them from class...he has no slides); Do the homework and practice exams online...you will do fine.
good prof, gave practice exams, chapter summaries, review sessions every week and day before the test. gave a good curve. good guy, really knows his stuff. attendance isn't mandatory but you should go because chem is hard. take him for chem definitely
he is the best chem teacher i ever had!!!! especially withe the tests, most of the questions are from his lecture, if you go to his class every time, you dont even have to read the textbook! strongly recommend him for chem starters!
Fantastic professor, highly suggested to take this class with him. He knows his stuff and wants you to know it too, but helps you well along the way. Chemistry is not really my jam, but I went to every class and got an A. Do it!
LOVE THIS GUY! If you go to class and take his notes you will get an A. I took CHM1 with Shepard freshman year and FAILED TERRIBLY! So far with TOSCANO I have a 95 and a 90 on my tests! He is an AMAZING TEACHER! DEF TAKE CHEMISTRY WITH HIM!!!!!!!!! <3
He is one of the few amazing teachers actually teaching at UAlbany.
HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT BUT HE TEACHES AS IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A BACKGROUND IN CHEM WHEN IT IS ONLY A 120 COURSE.
HE IS JUST AMAZING PROFESSOR HE ADD COMMITMENT TO WHAT HE DOING. VERY SWEET NICE GUY. VERY FRIEND AND EXTREMELY HELPFUL. HE IS A GREAT TEACHER INDEED. God BLESS HIM FOR HIS GOOD . I WILL RECOMMENDED HIM FOR STUDENT.
He knows his stuff and teaches it well, but his tests are twice as hard as the material he teaches, and you need to focus in class.
Got an A- in the class with straight 80s on the tests. Do well on the hw and decent on the test and you'll do fine. Optional Final, textbook isn't necessarily needed. He has extra helps and is willing to explain things to you. Nice guy but boring sometimes.
Good Professor will work w/u. I dropped the class cause of a med leave & though I tried couldn't learn a semesters work in a matter of 4 weeks. Once offered 2 help him clean his messy office cause I felt bad 4 him & hes nice, gave him my info & later realized he thought I was leading him on. I was so embarrassed & couldn't believe it gd deeds.. smh
My fav Chemistry Prof by far! He is really clear and always willing to help. The class is really curved I did no homework and got a A-. The final is optional. If you have to take Chem and you aren't a science major take him.
Had Toscano for Organic Chem II. Really Recommend! Gave textbook problems to do (and not!) for each chapter, which would appear on the test! After going to office hours just to look at my tests once, he knew my name! Really clear in class, fun to listen to. If you have a choice - take his class - and go! Want to take another class with him if I can
He is the absolute best chemistry professor on campus. Better than Ngo and WAY BETTER than Manning. He understands that not everyone in the class is a Chem major and teaches you only what you need to know in a clear manner. Lots of practice problems, example tests, etc. Do the homework religiously and you'll be set for the test!
His voice is very monotone and he drones on and on. He teaches his material way too fast. He is old-fashioned, so he doesnt use slideshows or show any clips. He just writes on the board. It's really hard to stay awake in his class. Extra help is a must if you want to pass his tests ! A
Doesn't use power points, puts all notes on the board, he only teaches you what you need to know to pass the class. He is a great professor I hope I can take organic chem with him.
Power points are for people that do not have a command of the subject. They have no place in science classes unless you need to show some graphs/images. He knows what he is talking about, so he doesn't need the text book companys help!
Listen. Here's the deal. Out of my 200 person class, maybe 15 showed up any given day. He gives countless sample problems in class, which are exactly the same as his tests. Show up to class, and write down "Step 1, Step 2, Step 3..." for each chapter, and you'll earn the easy A just like me. Any complaints on here are from no-show students.
Professor Toscano is one of my favorite professors i have had. He explains topics clearly, as long as you pay attention, he makes chemistry appear to be an easy topic. He gave review sheets, unit summaries, review sessions, so you knew what to study. He knows his stuff and he is very smart. I definitely recommend taking chemistry with him.
The Ron Swanson of Chemistry. Take him, go to class, he's hilarious. Read the book before class, he holds review sessions on Fridays which is really nice. Super passionate, very cool, don't take anyone else.
To start, Organic Chemistry is very difficult for most people no matter how you slice it. Toscano uses no powerpoints. I suggest reading a chapter before attending his lecture on it, then highlighting what topics he covers in the chapter because he skips stuff. Be prepared to write flashcards and do practice problems A LOT. I got an A-.
Very knowledgeable professor. His tests are difficult but fair and he does plenty of review. I got an A by doing the practice homework and practice tests he makes available on Blackboard. His lectures get to the point and explain everything clearly.
just do the hmwk and go to class and you will get an A. The test comes from the homework and examples. very straight forward teacher. I would take him again if I could.
Awful professor. He expects you to know everything he is talking about. Every test average was absolutely horrible. Literally the worst professor I've ever had
Dr. Toscano may at first seem hard to understand, but he has a profound understanding of chemistry, speak to him in office hours will do you justice. He doesn't use the power points, but his notes on the whiteboards are just as adequate. He teaches more by example in order to prepare us more for exam type questions which help me a lot. 2 thumb up
He knows what he is talking about and the structure of his course is spot on. He lets his students know what they need to know well ahead of time. He gives plenty of examples and study material. If you fail this class it is because you didn't put much effort into it.
Professor Toscano just wasn't a very helpful or thoughtful teacher
This guy is a sweetheart but doesn't know how to teach. He'll mumble on incessantly about useless information not related to the course which makes it hard to understand what you actually need to learn. He rarely acknowledges anyone raising their hand and does not encourage questions. If you take this course you need to teach yourself.
He's an awesome professor who is extremely passionate about chemistry. For every equation there's a background story to back it up, which are usually quite funny. It's difficult to fail because he teaches the class so well. If you're failing it's because you honestly aren't trying; the class is easy enough to pass by just taking the tests alone.
Very dull and uninteresting to listen to. It's hard to keep engaged in his class and he doesn't use enough examples. Teaches the class as if everyone has extensive prior chem knowledge. Tests are very fair and gives an option final to replace lowest grade. Not the best but definitely not the worst
Toscano is really good but he just speeds through the questions like OD, like you really gotta be on your p's and q's to really understand when he does a problem. he is really helpful one on one though so if you seek the help, he is willing to help you!! Definitely go to his office hours if you are struggling.
Dr. Toscano is a really great guy. He is a great professor who is knowledgable, respects his students, and puts in the effort to make sure they understand the material. You MUST read the book and do the hw though. His lectures are based upon the book, but he is not the kind to just teach right out of it. The hw is just like the exams.
Dr. Toscano is a nice guy, he just is not a good teacher. He uses notes that were hand written in 1996.. He goes through the lectures too quickly and does not explain how to solve problems. His tests consist mostly of solving problems by using a certain equation or formula. I would not recommend taking him unless you are pretty good at chemistry.
Best professor, if you need help he is there, exams are 95%, similar to homework problems, I would highly recommend him.
His class is more like you read the textbook and the textbook teaches you and he just summarizes and does tons of problem examples in class for clarity. Masteringchem is not required, but helps. Tells you straightforward what material he will have on the test and what he won't. He's such a nice old guy, but not the best teaching style.
Toscano is one of the nicest professors at Albany, he really cares about the students. Not only does he curve the test but he really works with you to find how you can do better. Only criticism is that he goes off into long stories and forgets what he is doing
i dropped out. if you completely utterly suck at chemistry this doesnt seem to be the teacher for you. i also blame myself for not trying harder. he seemed like an awesome prof- but stay on your toes if you take him. he goes fast and if you such at chem you really need to put in a lot of effort.
If you have no prior chemistry experience. Do not take this class. Im honestly confused as to how he got these good reviews. He does no powerpoints and just breezes through assuming you know what he's talking about. I pretty much had to teach myself using my roommates' old notes and by going to tutoring.
Honestly, the best way to pass his class is take notes ahead of class from the textbook. On the syllabus he'll tell you what chapters he's talking about that day. If you go without knowing anything ahead of time TRUST ME YOU WILL BE LOST
Professor Toscano is a great guy and a great professor. I am absolutely terrible at chemistry and I learned so much from him. He is available outside of class and is willing to spend whatever time it takes to answer your questions. He sets the class up for you to succeed. If you show him that you are making an effort you will do just fine.
A wicked nice professor who genuinelly cares for his students as long as he knows that they care about doing well in his class. Don't get discouraged if you need to go to tutoring to do really well. He gives practice tests ahead of time so you know what to expect. Between taking notes and going through homework you should do well.
Toscano is the sweetest professor! If you show up for class and take notes, then you will do well. He teaches right from the chalkboard and does not post notes online, so show up. Always do his practice exams before each test (everything you need to know is on them). He wants his students to do well and gives extra credit bonus questions on tests.
He's a GREAT professor who knows his stuff when it comes to Chemistry. Literally all you have to do is read the textbook and do his practice tests online and you'll do great. All it takes is effort, in my opinion. He does move very quickly in class, but that's because he expects you to have read the chapter before class. Put in the effort for an A.
Professor Toscano is a kind older man who cares about the success of his students. He curved all of our tests by adding bonus questions, and if you scored a 70% on homework it counts as a 100%. He can get distracted during lecture, but he definitely knows that he is talking about. DO NOT skip lecture, as he does not post notes online.
He is my fav chem professor here! His classes are enjoyable for a tough subject and he doesnt post his notes online so DONT SKIP CLASS. He tends to go off topic but you're still learning some type of science. He is very understandable if a student/whole class is doing poorly and will curve. He is very helpful in office hours and will do his best.
Get ready to be more confused than you have in your entire life! He believes the textbook is all wrong but the exam is based off the textbook. He does not use powerpoint slides and I never understood a single lecture he has taught. The exams are fair and can add extra points but does not help when everyone does not know what is going on.
You can't expect to do well in this class if you soley rely on the professor to teach you the material. If you read the textbook and put in the hours then the lecture will supplement what you have learned. Its orgo if you don't put in at least 6hrs a week of studying then what do you expect? To ace his tests you need to know the book in and out.
Made Gen Chem 1 feel like Orgo. This guy just makes things hard for no reason. Annoying homework every 2 days.
You absolutely need to go the extra mile when it comes to studying for this class. Orgo 2 is a whole different ball game. You have to read and understand the topics in the textbook inside and out. Use youtube as a supplement and practice, practice, practice.
If you struggle with chemistry as is do not take this man. He uses no slides, notes, homework, participation the list goes on. He uses is his notes from when he learned chemistry. There's no introduction to what you will learn for that lecture. 3 exams, 1 mandatory final. Uses Aleks as "extra points" HE DOES NOT TEACH. Dropped class.
Ive had him for both chem 1 and 2. Very old school so show up and take notes. If you do and understand aleks than you should without a doubt get an A in this class. Your grade is decided by 4 exams non cumulative. Nice guy, goes a little fast. Theres no easy way to take this course, youre gonna have to be studious.
So after taking him for a semester, I can say that Toscano is very old-schooled. He doesnt post PowerPoints and tends to ramble on about chemistry topics. The exams arent that bad if you study and put in a lot of effort, but this definitely isnt an easy A type of class. Overall, hes a very sweet professor. Just study and youll be fine!
He's a really kind man, but the sad fact is he isn't a good lecturer & he doesn't use slides. His test are at an excessive level of difficulty & they are the bulk of what you will be graded on. He made homework optional & used it for extra points so that was good, but the class testing averages were F's throughout the entire semester. DON'T DO IT.
Prof Toscano is THE MAN! Chem is difficult regardless but he organizes his class in a way that makes an A readily accessible. You definitely have to put in work though. Go to office hours, he's caring and willing to rephrase if you dont understand something. 3 tests, a final and a makeup exam. In my day he even used a HW for extra points. Great guy
One of the favorite professors that I've encountered at Albany. Easy to understand, direct, and keeps focus on the important things. If you have the chance to take him, do it. Fantastic!
Literally the most boring person I have ever been in a room with. He just stands at the front of the lecture hall and drones for the whole class period. I had to basically teach myself.
Horrible teacher. I learn best by PowerPoint and he refuses to create slides. He rambles and gets off topic a lot. He goes through topics too fast and doesn't answer questions during class. I hated this class with a passion and he made me hate chemistry even more. I didn't learn anything from him. I would rather swallow nails than have this teacher
Professor Toscano doesn't use lecture slides. If you don't go to class, you for sure won't pass the class. He goes off on many tangents during class time and barely helps you review for tests. There is an optional cumulative final at the end of the semester, but he gives you nothing to study from (like example problems). Not the best professor!
He is a great person, however I dont think hes the best at explaining topics but he gives you work problems to solve and tests from previous years to work on and they are very helpful for the exam and an A is like an 85 for his class so its not hard to get an A if you put in the effort
Chemistry as a subject is difficult already but its even more difficult if you have to learn it yourself and thats what youll be doing in Toscanos class. Youll be graded on 4 tests because Toscano doesnt check hw and youll have to learn yourself because Toscano assigns chapters/questions from the book but he doesnt have recorded lectures or slides
This was such a terrible remote class. The professor was hard to reach by email and there was a lot of confusing things in the syllabus especially on whether the final was optional or not. There was no zoom or recorded lectures. Only handwritten lecture notes and his handwriting was illegible. I doubt in person will be any different with Toscano.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! Worst chem professor ever. His lectures are confusing, and the only thing we have to work with from him are his notes that he takes a picture of and uploads to BlackBoard. Half the time I can't even read it. His voice puts you right to sleep because it is so boring. The class average was about a 40. You were warned.
Do. Not. Take. This. Class. Listen to what everyone on here is saying. Exams are hard and worth 60% of overall grade. No extra credit and no curve. Exam averages are in the 50s, he refuses to teach off powerpoint, instead he uses handwritten lecture notes, also, during lecture he often gets sidetracked.
If you don't go to class you will 100% fail, all of his notes are handwritten and there are no PowerPoints. Graded only on 5 exams so if you do bad there is no making up for it.
Graded based on 5 tests, but lowest can be dropped with high final grade. Often added bonus points to tests because it was needed to keep kids above water. Not hard imo to pass as long as you're studying the material but the amount of material was difficult for me. Prof always made sure there was an opportunity to ask questions before the test.
I never went to the lecture cause his notes are posted but trust me they're useless but in the first page of the notes he lists the topic that he will talk about. I took chem 115 so the lab counted in the grade. But bulk of the grade is based on your average from 4 exams. You also have an optional final that you could take. GREAT CURVE
Toscano isa really good teacher. I see so many people complaining about him. if your taking his class right now do the hw problems like 3 times before the exam and youll great. its a lot but u got this!! his orgo exams were easier than other professors at ua. the curve was really good to. if ur failing go to class and talk to him! he works with us
Chem 115 can be a complex subject for many students but Professor Toscano is available to help students and his transcripted notes posted on Blackboard were pretty helpful. For exams, most of the time there are 2 extra credit problems so the possible score is 110/100. Toscano posts questions and answers to previous exams to help you study as well.
