I havent had him as a prof for too long but so far hes been more than willing to answer any and all questions. He is extremely caring and does his best to make class entertaining while teaching the material. He has no problem re-explaining something if it is unclear and takes little breaks to check if there are any questions or problems.
Havent been in his class for long but he is a good prof. Cares a lot about his students and their understanding of the concepts. I would recommend taking his class if you can, hes a great guy!
Understandable lectures, goes over multiple different problems one may encounter in a topic, asks if students have questions after every example and goes over questions in a different manner if you dont understand. Assignments aren't hard, but they help understanding, the midterms are also very reasonable in both difficulty and length.
just awesome , he will make math super interesting and simplified . highly recommend taking him.
He has really great lectures and makes the material very understandable. Great at explaining the content and answering questions. Also, he gives us lots of practice problems that are really useful to go through when studying for the exams. The tests are not necessarily easy, but if you study the assignments and problems, you can do really well.
Mr. Paul is very nice and cares about his students. He's very understanding in and out of class.
Great prof. Always very helpful.
Tsopmene is one of the best profs I've had, with his teaching and accessibility outside of class being very clear and useful. Caring and fun, he'll help you in any way if you reach out. Super knowledgeable in math, his assignments and practice exam will prep you for the real midterms and finals. Lots of homework, but it does help.
The professor is very knowledgeable and cares about the subject. The only reason I rated him 4/5 is because his speech may not always be the clearest for some students. He gives an amazing amount of practice questions every week. The tests give way too many questions for the amount of time given. Even if you know the material, you may not finish.
Fantastic prof, provides plenty of material to learn and study for tests. Is always happy to help.
Professor Tsopmene is definitely a great professor for first year level maths, very patient with explaining and helping his students to understand the course materials! Few assignments throughout the semester, two midterms and one final.
Very genuine and helpful, he will always help and go through something with you until you understand it.
Way too many practise problems, they don't help for some assignments. Lectures are okay, but sometimes simple to the point of boredom.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Way too many practice problems and assignments are extremely tough. The notes do not relate to the assignment problems and the practice problems sometimes have questions similar but RARELY! You HAVE to attend office hours to learn otherwise you will not get a good grade. Midterm averages are extremely low as well (for a reason).
A lot of practice problems. Lectures have way too much theory and less examples compared to the assignments. Don't take this class with him, take it with another professor.
Paul is an amazing prof.. if you understood and paid attention to Pre Calc 12 than Math 116 is an easy class that is taught very well. Paul is a great guy all around and makes sure you understand what he is teaching. He should have 5/5 on this website.
He is a very caring professor. Held extra office hours and would answer any questions that students have. The course material is very theoretical as it is required by the course syllabus itself and not because of his teaching method. If you look closely, the assignments are based on the practice problems which makes it not that difficult to do them
Professor Paul is the best. He provides a lot of practice problems that are so useful for assignments and exams. This course is pretty hard, and we need to know definitions and a lot of theorems. His lecture is great. He gives a lot of examples and explains each step well. If you practice, you will definitely receive a good grade. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Professor Paul is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is very caring and is genuine. For example, my lecture was only an hour-long, but Paul would stay for an extra 45mins to an hour helping all students who were having difficulty. Everyone needs a Professor Paul in their life.
While Prof. Tsopmene cares about the students, his style of lecture made some things hard to understand.
His lectures are a bit boring. He doesnt really cover that much material in them but rather leaves them for the practice problems (which contain 90% of the theorems you need to know). He gave over 250 practice problems which meant that your grade was depended on how much practice you did. All exams were based off practice problems too.
Paul is a gift from the heavens. Many extra office hours, caring, clear in his expectations, fair testing, you name it he has it. Would highly recommend you take a course with him if given the option. Lectures went over the fundamentals and testing was based off of practice problems, which were more difficult. Best math prof Ive had
Paul always helps with questions and is clearly there to help you learn; really supportive prof. Personally I had a hard time understanding the lectures so I didn't always attend, but learn to do all the practice he gives you (especially practice tests) and you'll be good. Tests were always fair.
Paul is the most amazing man I have ever met. His lectures cover everything super clearly and he gives lots of extra practice. He really cares about his students' questions and is always super helpful. He's very approachable and wants everyone to understand the course. He's so wonderful I miss him so much
Dr. Tsopmene is honestly a gem of a prof. His lecture style is "define what we will be doing then do a bunch of examples" and it gives you plenty of time to understand what he is doing. Also, if you are still unsure, he will stay in the call until you're fully understanding. This mixed with him giving practice questions after every. 10/10
Super caring prof. His classes consist of few examples typically (usually because of short lecture blocks) but tons of practice problems after every single lecture. If you need the extra practice, you will quite literally never run out.
Really enjoyed the teaching style of this prof. He is organized and fair.
The best prof i’ve had so far. he answers all questions you could possibly have. teaches you the concepts then ACTUALLY goes over example problems in the lecture. he gives so many practice problems after every single class and makes tests and assignments EXACTLY like the practice problems. if you do his practice you’ll get a good grade no doubt
Great prof and really sweet and caring! Offers help outside of class. 5 lab tests instead of midterms which are almost exactly like the practice problems he assigns/recommends. Assignments were a little tough but if you pay attention in class, do the practice problems regularly, and ask for help when you need it then you should do well.
Dr Tsopmene is an amazing professor! His lectures are very clear and organized and he shows all his work within his notes. Canvas is very organized and it is very clear what will be tested on. Practice problems are given after each lecture and testable questions are mentioned with full solutions! Overall outstanding prof!
Dr. Tsopmene is by far the best proffessor I've had at UBCO. He is clear on what he expects you to understand and provides many practice problems with carefully explained solutions. He is also incredibly kind and charismatic. Calculus is not an easy course but he goes above and beyond to lay out the foundations with clarity.
maths cannot be taught without practice. Most of the homework was optional (practice questions / solutions). University has a guideline of 2 hours homework per hour in class - 6 hours of actual homework. Many courses are easier - u can't BS your way through calculus. I had the text (some don't bother) he followed and referred to it. Yes its hard.
you can tell Professor tsopmene cares about his students, his lectures are organized and clear. No midterms instead 5 tests (which is nice) but the grade break down is 15% for assignments, 35% lab tests and 50%final. This grade break down makes it difficult to succeed if you don't test the best.
His final exam was awful. His own answer sheet was 20 pages long and it's safe to say most people didn't have enough time to finish it. Which is terrible if you rely on the final exam to succeed in this course. It was such a shock to me. and he didn't really help fix that problem. course was alright though.
Paul is the best! Assignments were pretty okay, he gives lots of examples in class, lab tests were pretty hard but he gives practice problems that help. The final was terrible, almost no one finished because it was so long and difficult (we had to memorize almost all the formulas). He did change grade weighting to personally benefit each student!
Paul is the best of the best. He cares a lot and wishes nothing but success for everyone. He holds extra office hours that help with the assignments and gives out practice midterms and finals that are very similar to the real deal. Assignments are a little long but that's my only complaint. Amazing Prof.
Very passionate about Mathematics and always explains concepts at a slow but steady pace, regularly pausing for questions. He held special office hours before each assignment and midterm. He goes above and beyond and genuinely cares for students' performance in the course.
Paul is probably the best math profs I've ever had, he made me enjoy math again. Material wise, I did everything online just using his lectures and practice questions, and breezed through the midterms and assignments. Whenever I had question outside of his office hours, he responded with a very detailed explanation to ensure I understood.
He explains mathematical concepts so well that I'm convinced he could teach matrix algebra to a goldfish if he wanted to, and he makes great use of lecture time. Rather than simply doing examples in class, he made sure we understood the definitions and theorems, and he gave us an exercise book with definitions, theorems, and practice questions.
just take courses with him he is just as great professor I have met in my life
Amazing prof, taught the class very well and was very clear about evaluations and tests. Doing the math workbook and practice tests is all thats really needed to pass and do well.
A very friendly and dedicated professor
A very friendly and dedicated professor.
Professor Tsopmene is probably the best math teacher ive ever had. I got a 70 in pre calc 12 but a 90+ in both midterms in this course so far. He explains everything so thoroughly and gives examples that are identical to what youll see on the exam. The weekly assignments can be time consuming but he regularly gives extensions. overall 10/10
You can tell Paul genuinely cares about helping students. He is always encouraging questions, and his tests have clear guidelines for what to study. If you do his practice tests/questions enough, you are pretty much guaranteed a good grade. His notes are super clear and concise. Genuinely never thought I would understand calc this much thanks Paul
The kindest most caring professor you will ever have. Expectations are very clear for lab tests and as long as you practice you will get an A. So patient and friendly during office hours, he truly loves what he does and it shows, you'll never find a better professor. He is very intelligent and always greets his students with a smile. amazing class
Paul is an amazing prof who wants his students to do well. In place of midterms there are 5 tests throughout the semester, all of which help prepare you for the final. Final was identical to practice exam, if you go to class you will pass with a high grade
Lectures were very enjoyable and easy to grasp. Assignments were very straightforward and easy to get done on time. Lab tests were exactly like the practice lab tests as well the final exam was exactly like the practice exam! Great course and greater teacher!
Best math professor EVER!! No surprises, you always know exactly what to expect on the tests and final. So good at explaining concepts and creates amazing notes for you to just copy in class. Loved having 5 lab tests over 2 midterms, and the practice final was identical to the actual final. Super kind and genuinely cares about his students!
He makes this class so easy to do really well in! He created an awesome exercise book with detailed solutions that was super helpful to learn the stuff. Assignments were easy, often referenced specific questions from the book so you could see how to do them. Lowest lab test and assignment grade dropped. Loved this course and loved Paul!!!
Best math prof by far! He always was super enthusiastic during lectures and went at a steady pace through the content so it was easy to keep up with what was going on. Also the lab tests and final exam were very similar to the practices he posted, so there were no surprises whatsoever. He genuinely cares about students and wants you to succeed!
Genuinely a nice guy who loves what he does & his students. Lab tests and final are easy if you do the pratice tests. Went from failing both midterms and just sqeeking through in math 100 to achiving a high grade in 103 with Paul. Truly a great prof and has tempted me to take another math course with him even though math isn't my strong suit.10/10
I LOVED this class! Paul was the best teacher and actually made me enjoy math. The way he sets up this class is so helpful for keeping students on top of their learning and the tests and assignments were so beneficial for my grades. Paul is so kind and such a nice person too!! Would 100% take his class again
Very patient prof, good at explaining and revising previously learned content. Provides students with a free online work book for extra practice that has very detailed answers. The exams are very similar to the examples in the workbook, so this is a very helpful tool to study with!!
Genuinely cares about students. Very helpful and accessible outside class.
Very kind and cares about his students. Wants students to succeed and is always willing to give extra help and to clarify anything you might have questions on. I did better in his Calculus class than I did in any math class in high school.
Best Prof!!
Paul is amazing! Super caring and very approachable. It was his first time teaching Math 307 so he put in a lot of work to make the course interesting. Assignments had material not covered in lecture. The project was more like an assignment with a group. Material was challenging and final was brutal. Will be better after teaching it some more.
Paul is a nice guy, but his exams are extremely difficult. He focuses a lot on testing proofs that are ridiculously long or that we hadn't seen before. The class average for the final was 56, tells you all you need to know.
He has a great personality, which makes lectures motivating. His workbook is so detailed, and he always provides the exact types of questions you need to know for tests. It's all fair game, no surprises. Assignments and quizzes are weighed equally. His notes are great. Amazing instructor. Put in a good effort, and you'll do well in this class.
Paul actually cares about you learning the material. His workbook is super detailed, and gives an outline for each test and final that are exactly like the tests. Study those and you'll do fantastic. He also lets you drop your worst assignment AND test at the end of the semester which is clutch!
Overall, this professor was great. His workbook was excellent and related directly to the testing material. If you do his recommended problems, you can easily pass them, even if math is your weak subject. I would wholeheartedly take his class again.
This class was so easy for a calc course. He gave review questions from his workbook that were almost the exact same as what was on the tests. His workbook was also super helpful and the detailed solutions saved me. The final was also very easy - if you just do the review final, the types of questions are identical.
Paul is the nicest and most caring teacher ever! He created his own textbook with an amazing solution manual and all of his tests, assignments, and final questions were taken directly from the textbook just with different numbers. If you do the homework you can get A's on tests and tests and assignments, the final was harder but do-able.
Paul is awesome. There's not much else for me to say that hasn't already been said. He has created his own textbook with practice problems and step-by-step solutions, which is extremely helpful. 10/10
Paul is the best math prof ive had. He posts his notes and he's very likeable. The assignments were kinda tough but his exams were all fair and fine if you do the practice.
Amazing professor. Lets us know exactly what's going to be on the exams, gives us practice papers that reflect the style of actual exam questions, and responds extremely quickly to emails. Lectures are really useful to attend & I found them very easy to follow along with.
Paul is amazing and his workbook is extremely helpful. Definitely take him if you actually want to learn something!
The best professor I have ever had. He clearly knows the material in great depth and also knows how to teach it well. His grading can be a bit tough, but still fair.
Paul best professor I've had. Course layout was reasonable and well communicated, lectures were amazing, he was accessible out of class for questions on assignments. The tests were tough but fair and were never surprising as the test content was made extremely clear. Take this class if you want a straightforward upper level science credit.
Paul was amazing for Math 101, he truly is such a detail-oriented and kind professor. If you work and attend class, you will get a good grade. I was so worried about taking calc 2 on top of my other stem classes but it ended up being the easiest class I had for the semester.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Oh Dr. Paul, where do I begin? Your teaching was eloquent and sophisticated, turning complex ideas into simple truths. Each lecture felt like a conversation, touching my soul. Your passion inspired us, your wisdom guided us, and your kindness left a mark. You'll forever be our light in grey skies.
Truly amazing professor!! I could ever had. He really teaches so well and makes Math concepts so easy and relatable. His ways of teaching is great and make harder concepts easier. I really appreciate from bottom of my heart.
Professor Tsopmene was very very kind and clearly loved math very much. He tried his best to explain clearly and engage the class (though few ever responded), and he made sure to always ask how we were every class. He was patient and he always gave good feedback and was always super friendly and kind. I really enjoyed his class.
Paul is so sweet but all the previous reviews are lies. His quizzes are extremely difficult, and after comparing with students from last year, it seems as if he's changed the difficulty substantially. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
paul is awesome. he's so sweet and his notes are amazing. anyone who rates him lower than a 5 is just mad about a bad grade.
notes are amazing and he Cleary cares about his students, his practice midterm are also very similar to the actual exam!
Nicest guy ever, lots of practice, fair tests
As someone taking this class as a biology major, I DO NOT recommend taking this class. The lectures were pointless and confusing. I stopped going to class and did better reading through the textbook than taking notes in class. The class is far more difficult than in past years, lacking clear instructions and no practice exams. Disappointed.
Paul is the sweetest prof that I have come across, however, I wish I could say the same about his teaching. He's enthusiastic about math and I was genuinely looking forward to this class. As someone who loved math, this class made me hate it. His TAs take off so many marks and his lecture notes never seemed to cover what we were expected to know.
Caring and enthusiastic professor, posts all his notes and textbook and workbook were very useful. The final exam was essentially the same as the practice, and he allowed to drop 2 of the 5 midterms which was a lifesaver. I enjoyed Math 103, although going to class itself was pretty redundant. However, he provides ample resources to self-study.
Dr. Tsopmene is amazing! His practice exams are extremely similar to the exams, and he offers so many materials for your benefit. He is so dedicated to the actual teaching aspect of being a professor, which is why my friends and I love him.
Really nice guy, content not too bad, I took Math 200 not 101. His firat time teaching math 200
Paul is an absolute diva!
Paul's lectures are very good. He explains concepts thoroughly and makes sure to include examples whenever a new concept is taught. Uploads all notes and practice exams to canvas. His assignments can be very long, sometimes taking up to 5 hours to do, but they align very closely with exam material.
