Good professor. He's new at teaching and a young cool guy. He relates to the class and makes it as fun as possible. However very strict grading scale.
Very hard class but made the best of it he tried to lighten it up but expects alot of work from his students. Go to office hours, and go to review sessions
Dr. Vadola is a great orgo professor - it's a hard class but he keeps it interesting, gives out helpful worksheets, makes online videos to teach how to do tricky problems, and offers review sessions (you should def attend these!). I hated all chem at first but ended up really liking all my organic chem classes I took with him!
very arrogant and doesn't help you. does not do problems that would help you or anything that would remotely be on the exam.
Great professor. However he have very high expectation. It is understandable he attended Columbia University in New York.
Just read the book and do the work. It's not difficult.
Although a decent professor it's very hard to hear him. The averages most quarters are bimodal, so you either do really well or you fail. I believe it's more understanding how to take his very unique tests than the information, his tests are extremely hard. This class is hard so don't get a false impression from other reviews. Good luck.
Very hard class. But very good professor.
Dr. Vadola has a clear passion for this class, therefore gives a very thorough lecture. His exams are tough but when it comes time for the final or the ACS exam, you are more than prepared.
Dr. Vadola is an amazing professor. He's clearly very passionate and wants his students to learn. Exams are hard and he expects a lot but if you want to really learn orgo his class is the way to go. Plus he's hilarious and makes lecture actually enjoyable.
The book will be your best friend. Get "Organic Chemistry for Dummies"; that book saved me during CHE 230. Tests are very difficult at first and conceptual test questions are too intense. LEARN HIS TESTING STYLE EARLY AND LOOK AT PRACTICE EXAMS! Funny, smart, sassy guy. Go to office hours. Falls behind and moves tests frequently.
Dr Vadola is awesome as a person (seriously...I'd love to actually hangout with him) but an extremely tough grader. It's an extremely difficult class as well, but he is organized and is willing to help whenever possible. When I found out I passed this class, I actually started crying.
He is a skilled public speaker, his lectures engage you and are far from boring. This is what I would call a very meticulous class with a very forgiving professor. He is there for you and he's an amazing guy. A bit on the arrogant side, but also very witty and very smart, the latter compensates for the former, very much so. I would choose him.
He's a smart professor, and explains stuff pretty well, the only problem is his tests are super hard, plus the class is hard also. He doesn't give advice weather to drop or withdrawal, and don't expect any mercy for final grades. Only take him if your good at chemistry.
By the examples given in class and the stuff on the homework, you will be completely blindsided by the tests. They are absurdly difficult and there are no retakes. He doesn't give study guides. You can't pass unless you know exactly what you need to learn and you go to all of the office hours available. Unless you're a genius, prepare to fail.
Full of himself, but in the best way possible. Great guy, incredibly knowledgable and entertaining.
The reason I do not recommend taking Dr. Vadola is because there is a huge disconnect between his lectures and exams. He knows his stuff and he does a pretty good job teaching, but come exam time it's nothing like what we went over in class. If you don't have the option to take a different prof like I did, I suggest you invest in a tutor.
Dr. Vadola is incredibly smart. He is sassy. He explains thoroughly but his exams are TOUGH. You must put in a LOT of work for his classes.
Dr. Vadola designs his curriculum to challenge students. He prefaced the first lecture with "I purposely make this class hard so that you guys do well on the ACS exam." Do not expect an easy lecture. My final straw was when he decided to loudly complain about someone's cell phone in the middle of the final rather than go up and address the student
His exams are made for you to fail this course. Never expect that you are going to pass any orgo class with him.
This professor is honestly amazing. You put in the work, an A is possible. He has the hardest exams at DePaul for orgo, but getting that A makes it that much better. Hes one amazing professor and the many/few talks in his office hours has shown me enough of this mans character. Hes amazing, hands down. TAKE HIM AT DEPAUL!
Orgo is hard, so no matter who you have you will likely struggle. But trust me when I say you want Vadola as your prof. You can tell hes super knowledgeable of material but more importantly he sees you as a struggling student and not just 1 of the 60 people in his class. He takes students concerns seriously and genuinely wants them to succeed.
Dr. Vadola is a without a doubt an intimidating guy but he really wants his students to succeed and will help you anyway you can. If you pay attention in lecture you will pass, he color codes everything and will give useful tips on how to study. It is a very hard class but with him as your professor you will excel and maybe even end up liking Orgo!
Orgo is hard, but Vadola was direct and honest about the difficulty of the course. Vadola gave all of the materials needed to do well: lots of office hours, posted practice worksheets weekly, posted previous exams that were near identical to the exams we took, HW was graded for completion only. He wants student's success, and he's hilarious!
Historically speaking, I am not a great chem student, and I generally do not do well in chem classes. I am used to being an A(ish) student in everything else. HOWEVER, I am perfectly comfortable saying that Dr. Vadola is the best lecturer that I have ever experienced. He is clear, concise, and imbues you with chemical knowledge. Hard tests, though.
Contrary to what you may have heard, you should not be afraid of Vadola's class. He is a fair, if not generous, grader, and while his exams are challenging, they are not unreasonable. Admittedly, he could be more available to his students (cancels office hours and responds slowly via email), but he is overall a great teacher and kind man.
Tests and quizzes unreflective of material covered
Tests and quizzes are not reflective of material covered in class.
great lectures (at least online) and gives plenty of examples in order to really give you a sense of how things work. funny and very nice. chemistry is really hard but he made it generally pretty reasonable and i enjoyed his class. i would definitely take again.
Because of the lack of competence of this professor, I wish I had W'd earlier on. This class isn't even hard but his horrid attitude towards students will make you want to leave. AND he takes weeks to respond to email which is just great during an online class in a pandemic! He couldn't care LESS. AVOID him at ALL costs!
Doesn't respond to emails and hard to reach outside of class. Doesn't give advice if to W. Tests are widely known across DePaul for how insanely difficult they are. Be prepared to either invest in a tutor or outside resources like "orgo for dummies" if you MUST take him. Online lectures are long and he goes on tangents making it hard to understand.
Take any other professor you can. He is simply terrible at teaching, I spent hours on this subject and so did many others with no reward in the end.
Rarely gives out good grades, goes off topic on lectures often talking about unnecessary info that youll learn in the following sequence but includes it anyways. Test heavy and grades harshly, he said he couldnt care if half the class failed or not. Tried my best for the grade I have and Ive never done this bad before.
I wouldnt recommend him, if you have another choice choose them instead. I was disappointed from his ratings I thought I got the better professor but honestly just take anyone but him. He was quite rude to students and sent passive aggressive emails to the whole class at times when a couple students complained about difficulty. Very unpleasant.
Transition into remote learning was seamless. Lecture videos were extremely organized (i.e color-coded) and structured identically to in-class lectures. Assignments were challenging, but we were well-prepared to complete them with the resources available to us. His passion for organic chemistry and teaching was evident. Could not recommend him more
I wish I could rate him zero, dont trust any of the other reviews. The only color coding he used red for important which are things that never showed up on exams. Avoid at all costs. Take anyone else for your own good. He takes an eternity just to respond to emails and has been rude to students during class.
I had Vadola for orgo 1 online and even though the class is super hard he made it feel doable. He's a super nice guy and his lectures were concise. He doesn't rush through lectures online like many of my other professors do which makes It so much easier to pay attention and take notes without having to pause every couple seconds and rewind.
His lectures were overly lengthy, 6-8 videos a week that were each 45min-1hour long for absolutely no reason, he goes on a million tangents. And also requires you to watch them for full length for participation points, the book is more concise and explains better to be honest.
He constantly described certain topics that arent related to what we need to know for the exam, his worksheets are useless and his quizzes are nothing like the lectures and made to see where you are the averages are 50s and 40s so it really tanks your grade even though its supposed to help you gage an understanding.
Professor Vadola is not very clear in what he expects for the exam, he often gave worksheets that were more simple and not reflective as the exam. The homework through Connect was not very helpful for problem solving but were good to brush over content, overall the homework system wasnt helpful for the actual exams. He was harsh with questions
Please take this man! His lectures are actually soothing and he delivers information so well. He takes time to write things outs and take students through problems step by step. Hes extremely intelligent and always seems so excited to share different ways for students to learn. Hes always open to answer simple or complex questions.
Professor Vadola was never timely in answering emails from the lab and neither was his lab TA who answered emails days after the lab assignment and or lab report was due. He consistently messed up due dates for many assignments and it was difficult to reach out to him and actually have questions answered.
Takes forever to grade in a timely manner, never responds to emails on time which was frustrating considering its an online lab class.
Professor Vadola doesnt email students back on time and its hard to catch him outside of his 1 office hour a week. I dont recommend him to anyone who would like access to a professor outside of lecture and who is willing to give students time. Its a hard enough class as it is.
Dr. Vadola is a great orgo teacher, but makes you work for it. His approach to orgo is amazing as he uses a color code for lectures so taking notes is easier. Additionally, he gives great insight to attack problems by revealing a simple way to look at problems. I hate retro problems but made it bearable for me. Also has funny points/joke in lecture
Didn't like his lecturing style, very confusing and wants you to learn everything on your own before class and doesn't care about students. The exams are always harder than what he teaches. Choose any other professor but him
Do not know why everyone is saying all of this in the comments... Organic Chemistry (and really any chemistry) is going to be tough no matter who was going to take it. Dr. Vadola made reaction sheets that really helped me understand how these reactions work. I have a better understanding of Organic Chemistry thanks to him.
Dr.Vadola is the type of guy to take off points on an exam for the SMALLEST THINGS, anyone who decides to take him, beware: this man LOVES STEREOCHEMISTRY. I truly believe if stereochemistry was a girl he would have kids with it. Complete buffoonery with that B.S.
Dr. Vadola is tough, however, he really values student success. If you are willing to ask, he will do anything he can to help you succeed. His lectures make learning orgo so much more streamlined. He makes lots of extra practice material and has regular office hours. I learned a lot from this professor.
Any chemistry course is had, but he is one of the best professors to take for organic chemistry. He is super organized in lectures and a fast grader. As a person who hates chemistry and organic chemistry is the bane of my existence, he made the class a lot better. Attend the lecture, look at the reaction sheets, and do the worksheets.
lecture notes are very clear and organized. you do need to study/learn a good amount outside of class tho to rly do well on tests and quizzes. exams were not bad at all imo and a fair grader. gave class points to help us. knows what hes doing id recommend. helpful during office hours.
dont bother trying to email him because he wont respond and if we does he will never give you a straight answer. He also teaches like the building is on fire and he has to teach everything in an hour. Expect extremely fast lectures.
he makes me want to drop out and move countries
worst chemistry department ever, he make homework due on exam days, doesnt care to answer emails before an exam and puts reactions on tests that we never learned
He's okay but the 1 thing that is so annoying is how long he takes to respond to emails. He says he won't respond to anything on the weekends bc "he isn't working" during those hours. we have a quiz every monday so if u get stuck on anything good luck trying to figure it out yourself bc he won't respond.
this man makes me want to rip my hair out i have never been this enraged by someone in my life. he doesn't respond to emails on the weekend even if theres a test on Monday so good luck and fend for yourself. everytime i go to that class i come out with less brain cells than i started with.
He's really nice and listens to students. He is also funny in class and makes orgo enjoyable. I'm happy to take him again.
He's a really nice person. He cares about his students and takes the time to learn everyones names. He also is accessible during office hours and he will go over anything you want.
Don't listen to the bad reviews about him. Orgo is hard no matter who you take it with and either way you have to study a lot for the class. Dr. Vadola makes orgo bearable and definitely cares about his students a lot. He is also hilarious during lecture and makes it fun.
This professor is absolutely amazing, super funny and lectures are fun. Pay attention in lecture as all the test material and homework is based completely off the lecture material, textbooks are mostly useless. DO THE EXTRA HW PROBLEMS and ask for help on office hours--you'll definitely get an A- at least. Review what you got wrong on tests too!
Always uses bad analogies, likes to brag about how smart he is, never finishes lecture material on time, the list goes on. Never answers emails or questions. Doesn't put grades in d2l, had to teach myself the whole course and learn from the SI and my lab TA.
Chose others if you have an option
Paul Vadola is a great professor especially when it comes to Organic Chemistry. Pay attention properly in his lectures and ask questions. Listen to the advice that he gives when it comes to studying or practicing for exams because trust me this guy has spent a lot of time doing this sht and knows exactly what to do to get an A.
Super organized notes, thorough lectures, and encourages students to participate and ask questions. His office hours are very helpful and he wants you to succeed. He also gives reaction study sheets and a bunch of practice! Definitely recommend him for orgo!
Go to class, review lectures notes, do practice problems and you're chilling.
Orgo is very hard but I do think Dr.Vadola has the best lectures of all the orgo professors. He is clear, organized, and covers all of the content that will be on the test in class rather than assigning reading the textbook only. He is a very generous grader and has so many funny stories during class.
Don't be fooled by all the good comments! I feel so bad that I don't have any option but to enroll in his class. Mass up with all things and the materials will not be the same as tests. Homework is also not the same as the lesson! Think twice if you want to enroll in his class.
He is fine but if u have an option don't take him.
Never take him if you have an option! very disorganized
Never take him!
Don't take him if you have an option!
worst prof ever met
It's organic chemistry, so it's going to be difficult regardless of what professor you take. Dr. Vadola prepares you and makes you feel a little less scared. My biggest challenge with Dr. Vadola was communication outside of class - which was really difficult when I had questions because I couldn't make it to his office hours bc of work/class.
Holy Moly, everyone that gave Dr. Vadola a 1/5 needs a reality check. Brother, you are a grown adult. Ofc OChem is hard but blaming an amazing professor because you didn't study is not ok. Obviously you need to study outside of class. He is a good grader and quiz/test are very reflective of the content taught.
Dr. Vadola mad chill and nonchalant. He's the goat. For gen chem I used outside materials to study but for orgo Dr. Vadola is all you need he explains everything perfectly and exam are 100% reflective of what is in lecture. Organic chemistry is hard, so you do
Dr. Vadola's super cool and makes organic easy to learn. Obviously be prepared for the difficulty level of the course but his lectures are reflective of material taught in class
Gaslights students, doesn't upload worksheets and answer keys on time, is funny but, needs to be better at teaching and explaining rather than flying through the material. Funny guy tho
He's a great professor, his passion runs off on you if you care even a teeny tiny bit. Great lectures, pay attention more than anything that's what you're paying for and take notes at home
Dr. Vadola is a great lecturer and an expert in his field (which he will let you know). Still, that can be overlooked because of how he teaches. He was not that consistent with grading, but overall, still an excellent professor and made organic chem enjoyable.
In general, Dr. Vadola is a good professor. I've had him twice now and I feel like I am actively engaged in class. The only issue is that he does not respond to emails at all. I have sent him so many emails and never received a response. If you need a professor that's accessible outside of class and office hours, he is not a good choice for you.
Dr. Vadola is a good lecturer, but his exams never reflect his lectures. There will be reagents and mechanisms on the tests that I have NEVER seen in class before. He will put very difficult questions on the exam and get frustrated when no one does well on the exam. He needs to take time and reflect on why the class is constantly failing exams.
Dr. Vadola is very knowledgable and caring. Orgo is hard but he definitely makes it easier for you and wants you to succeed.
He's the goat. Take him if you can
Had him for the whole sequence and thought he was great. I feel like I enjoyed his learning style a lot because of his honesty. Organic was hard, but he set clear boundaries of what to focus on and what not to focus on. Just follow his directions and you'll be fine.
Nice guy this class was something else. Orgo is hard, but the problem is that this is "his thing" (his words, not mine). So the quizzes/exams are 100x harder than what he covers in lecture. He'll show rxns with simple compounds in lecture, but test you on extremely difficult/complex ones. Take with Dr. Karver instead. Most failed course in CSH btw.
This man is literally organic chemistry. When I think of orgo, I think Dr. Paul Vadola. He lectures so well and takes his time. Office hours are chill. Quiz/exams are reflective of his lecture imo, don't get attached to the examples in class, just learn concepts and you will do well. He makes this very clear.
Orgo is difficult, but Dr Vadola makes it so worth it. He knows what he's talking about all the time and is always willing to help.
I had Dr. V for the entire orgo sequence. He is one of the best profs I've ever had and made me enjoy ochem. He's knowledgeable, caring, and practical, and is honest with his students. The sequence is difficult and challenged me, but I couldn't have asked for a better person to learn from. He takes his time lecturing and builds a solid foundation.
Merry Christmas to the man Paul Vadola what a great guy
