He requires you to show all your work and write out the problem!
he only assigns problems that are in solution book. also give extra credit
Best math teacher I have ever had, very helpful, enthusiastic.
I'd never had algebra, so started here. He's ok, a little impatient, which inhibits questions. His teaching style is to just move along, and if you can't keep up...well, you better start jogging.
Does not explain things well at all. Better off learning from the textbook and tutors. He gets frustrated when people ask questions. The whole grade is based on three 10-problem tests, so don't screw up! Bad class.
didn't like his homework policy, it doesn't help the students. Not really willing to cover homework in class...very scattered personality.
Not clear. Taught out of book. Did not prepare class to go on to harder math class.
he wasn't very clear. he was way too easy and didn't adaquately prepare me for my further classes in math. his lecture were too vague and he relied too much on the math text book instead teaching from his own knowledge.

The textbook is only used for a few sample problems. Hard to understand. Whole grade based on three small tests. TAKE GOOD NOTES
Doesn’t give adequate sample problems to study for the test.Thinks giving one or two examples is enough for students to learn his material.Claims that his way is the best way of learning, which is a different way that is taught in the book.Plus he reeks of cigarettes and drinks way too much coffee.
If you don't mind his frenetics (lots of coffee and cigarettes for this guy), he makes it easy to get an A if you are already somewhat strong in Math. May not be the best for math-phobes.
He covers the basics but you need to do the homework and read the book so you can ask him questions later. His class is short, rarely stayed longer than 50 minutes. The grade is comprised from 3 12 - 16 question tests.
He is a really nice guy and funny, but I do not get this class. What he says doesn't seem to apply to the book. The book he chose has numerous typos and miscalculations.
This teacher is not for everyone, but his teaching style was perfect for me. Reading the book was pointless, I barely even looked at it. It is crucial to show up, take good notes, and follow along with the examples on the board, because they are exactly like the ones on the test.
If you are going to take this class you HAVE to show up. The book is so confusing and has a bunch of errors. He's a really nice guy and funny. If you have a questions he's happy to answer it. Follow the examples on the board and study for the tests.
Totally cool guy, very funny and makes the tests very easy!
Easy if you study at all, but very unclear, and if you miss classes you're screwed, because the book is unhelpful. He's pretty funny in class, though...
He's a really nice guy, and though he's always hyped up on coffee, he tries to guide you through the class. He's very open and easily accessable after class, has good office hours, and will acommodate. A little hard to understand, but knows math pretty well, and is willing to help. Tests are fairly easy, but you do HAVE to show up to class.
Is not an understanding individual if someone has Math Anxiety or health issues that require you to leave class during a test. I suffer from a stomach disorder and was told I would flunk the final if I left the room to use the bathroom. He was kind enough to communicate this in front of the whole class. Not to mention he waited for me in the hall and continued to yell at me. You will also catch him at the local watering holes checking out girls young enough to be his daughter.
He is a funny teacher, I like his style more and more.

Drinks way too much coffee!! Really funny, but some of his jokes are not appropriate. Other than that, he's a pretty cool guy. He goes over what is going to be on the test in detail and if you have a tutor, then you'll get an 'A" for sure. I suck at math and I got an "A" on all his tests, but beware of the final!!! It's hard.
Personality-wise I think Paul's great - drinks, smokes, gambles, chases women...he's a real card. If you're offended easily, don't take his class. Teaching wise he was patient, sympathetic, encouraging and wonderfully supportive. I worked REALLY hard and pulled a solid B, which is miraculous for me (a total non-math person).
Paul is funny although some of the jokes are not appropriate; he does drink a lot of coffee and smokes a lot. His class is really easy if you like his style. However, the stuff he teaches us is very different from what other professors teach their students.
He is a fairly easy teacher he only grades on tests. I like that, problem is he doesn't teach very effectively. He only knows one way to say something and those who get it get it and those who don't are left hanging. He is funny to watch. It's an easy A if you know some math otherwise he is pretty hard to learn from.
Great personality and it's fun to be in his class. Tests are fairly easy. I really can recommend this class!
i thought this guy was a perv! he was VERY unhelpful and kind of rude when i asked for help. Im glad i dropped his class and took Clark- he is a WAY better teacher!!!!!!!
This man is absolutely hysterical! I highly recommend him to anyone who has a hard time with math. He jumps around a lot so you kinda gotta keep him on track with what your question is, but he is a great teacher. And the man is a complete riot!
i strongly DONT recommend him as a statistic teacher unless u wanna work ur butt off. No notes or nothing on his tests. He's a very hard teacher!
umm...This teacher is VERY bouncy. He talks really fast and moves around a lot. He gives a lot of expamples but doesn't really explain it well. In his class if you get it, then you gt it and if you don't then you're screwed. It sucks because your whole grade is based on tests. So if you suck on test, don't take his class. I made that mistake...
Vetrano is the best teacher in this department. And I'm scared of math! Seriously, a very easy to like teacher. He kept the class light so if we weren't so afraid to say answers that might be wrong. A true gem at the JC.
By far the worst prof I have ever had. Brilliant man, but lazy- teaches above the heads of students, and becomes irritated when asked questions. I am a straight A student, and had to struggle to learn this material, *despite* his teachings. Avoid at all costs.

he knows how to teach and will explain the problem as many times. he always has time after class to sit down with a student and explain the problem. he is also really funny in class
Pretty easy class, but lots of homework.
He's too spastic to still be teaching!
Very funny, always cracking jokes in class. Doesnt make you turn in hw, buts its a good idea to do it. Gives a 'practice' exam before each test which is literally exactly like the real test. Attendance isnt mandatory, but you should go every once in a while to keep up. Offers help after every class, explains material well.
For all who say that they hate Paul's teaching, it's probably because he teaches like a University prof, not a JC prof. If you succeed in his class its because you wanted to, not because he walks you through it like a kid. Funny, straight to the point, I have failed math all my life and am consistently getting A's in his class. LOVE HIM.
Good God, avoid this guy like the plague. He judges your entire semester grade on just three tests, nothing else. Homework, attendence, and quizzes count for nothing. He also thinks he's funny when he's not. This is the kind of teacher people change their majors to avoid. I don't know why he has the positive reviews that he has on this site. RUN!!!
Grades are based on tests ONLY and very little extra credit offered. Homework was only assigned 4-5 times in the semester and is optional so it is not graded, but professor is available for questions.
I thought he was great! I really learned, got all A's, and never even did the homework. He is really smart so he is able to teach in a way that really makes sense. Take him if you're bad at stats.... thats what I did.
Your whole grade is based on three tests, and there is only a little extra credit. He's funny in a really awkward way, and his speech and movement patterns highly resemble the joker from Batman. He would be great for re-taking a class, since there isn't any homework. I liked him, just not his grading distribution.
this guy is fantastic. i thought stats would be impossible and i got a high A from never doing the homework and barely studying on the tests. i recommend him to anyone
Youre graded on your two midterms and final.. .THATS IT! He doesnt collect homework or notes. your on your own in a way.
Do not take this class if you are a stats, math, engineering, econ, or any other science related field major. You will NOT learn anything. All these people loved him because they sucked at math and then got A's. What does that tell you? Yes, he's easy. But if your future job/major relies on actually knowing anything, please don't take this class.
I honestly have no idea how I passed this class. Three tests and no homework but I didn?t learn anything. He?s funny but doesn?t have the best teaching methods. Final is cumulative but tests you on everything that wasn?t on the first two tests. Take at your own risk.
If you pick up formulas and their applications very quickly, this is the teacher for you; he won't waste your time with homework or extra practice in class. Otherwise, stay away. Go to every class, pay attention/take notes, and don't bother buying the textbook. It's a 2 hour class and we were never in class for more than 1:30, including breaks.
I thought Vetrano was a very good teacher! I was a little apprehensive going into the class...but he really sets you up for success. There are only 3 tests(including the final) and he tells you exactly whats on them. Plus hes really entertaining.
awesome instructor. very funny and helpful. knows what he's talking about. he does not require assistance or homework, having that said it's all on you if you pass or fail.
Paul Vetrano is a very interesting man, very quirky. However, he really knows how to teach math. He has a way of making you understand what he is teaching by applying to real life settings, which is hard to do with math. I never liked math and was never good at it. But right now, I am getting an A in his class.
If you have ANY struggles with math do not take him! You are graded on 3 tests, 10 questions each worth 100 points (all or nothing credit). He spends more time making sarcastic jokes during his lecture than teaching and is no help at all outside of class! If math comes easy to you then this is the class for you, for the rest of us dont bother!
Save money don't buy the book! Just write down all the examples and its smooth sailing. He tells you exactly what is on the test word for word just changes some of the numbers around. Is goofy and at times rude but overall a good teacher.
You will either love this class or hate it depending on your likes. I loved it because he does not give homework!! NONE! 2 tests and the final constitute your grade. That's it. He is a good teacher though. He gives so many examples it gets redundant almost but he explains everything thoroughly. If you study, you'll pass. I currently have an A.
If you don't struggle with Math, then he is the teacher for you. No homework, few tests, and attendance is optional. I found his Math 15 class to be hard due to his no partial credit policy and no notes on tests. It's hard for me to memorize formulas and I struggle with Math. He does not go out of his way to give any extra help, or extra credit.
I am a math major and i took Vetarano. Worst mistake i made.I was constantly in the Tutorial center getting help becuase he was not doing his job. He never used the book and wasted alot of time telling silly jokes that i did not understand. Was never helpful, always put pple down wen they asked questions in class.
Take AMAZING notes, dont bother buy book. Tell you excatly whats to expect on test. Grades based on 2 100pt test, and 100pt TOUGH final. Ex. Credit opportunity. Only take him if you dont care about the concept, and just want to plug and chug in formula.
Vetrano is simply terrible. In his mind he is a comedian and would rather tell everyone about his knowledge in politics than stats. If you want to learn stats, don't take it. If you enjoy painfully dull teaching and an arrogant teacher go for it. Additionally, if you need help in math and it doesn't come natural, run. Fast.
an easy subject made difficult! dont buy a book he never uses it, no homework, doesnt explain the math just tells you what to punch into a calculator. first test i got an F, second test an A. just by memorizing his examples. i learned no stats from this class, only how to memorize an example.
He's super funny. He uses the book a LOT in this class. He's really nice, and explains everything out. Don't beafraid to ask questions, he is nice about it. Don't text or give him attitude. He's a bit crazy, so be prepared. overall, a class I enjoy when I used to hate math.
He's a good teacher and he really loves what he does. As long as you take notes and study examples, you'll get an A. He is very helpful and is always willing to repeat and explain things. I highly recommend him.
He is a great teacher, he will answer all your questions and explain as much as necessary. He is pretty funny, but I think he mostly just tells jokes to entertain himself. I was shocked by some of the bad reviews because he was one of the best math teachers that I have ever had.
His class is easy! just to what he says. He makes everything simple compared to other teachers. i would take him again because the class is easy! dont even bother studying from the book! he will tell you exactly whats on the test just change the number! if math is your major dont take him. if you have to take stats and get an A or a B take him
From what I've read, this guy is hit or miss. In my class, he chose favorites. I asked him for help several times and he said no. Like many people here, I never learned a thing, and I take detailed notes. I changed my major because of him. Most of his classes were about gambling. relevant? yes. that was pretty much it. didn't learn a thing. Avoid
Another math major here, and I do not recommend him. He makes inappropriate comments in class, offers no help outside of class (unless maybe your a pretty girl) and otherwise confuses and muddles what could be a fun math subject. Find a different statistics teacher, you'll see.
If you have had algebra in the past this is a good refresher course. If you have not don't take him. No homework turned in no role call past wk 3. Explainations are in shortcut form. Started with full class, finished with a quarter. Speaks inappropriatly about other people and races. DRD students - demand to take tests in DRD, his office sucks.
Two semesters ago, I went to his first two classes - incomprehensible! He jumped from one thing to another with no consistent train of thought. If he asked a question he gave the answer right away - no opportunity to respond. After my second class I decided to drop, Thank God. I completed Math 15 with G. Sturr a wonderful teacher, got strait A!
His class consisted of two midterms and a final. He "assigns" homework but its not turned in. He is overall a great guy who makes jokes that sometimes his students don't understand, but when it came to math he just wanted to fly through everything and expected us to understand. Way too information to be taking in at once.
You get 3 exams including a final. Here's the breakdown: if your a struggling student who doesn't understand math and is too timid to ask a teacher who constantly talks about bs things and rush's through his course then dont take him. Learn from me do REALLY good on your first 2 exams and hopefully you will still pass the crazy ass final!
He goes too fast...and Cant wait to be through with class he usually finishes 45 min. early and then offer to stay later if you dont understand. If you dont pass his first two tests your out!!
I studied a total of 10 minutes over the ENTIRE semester and got 100% in the class. I'm not even that good at math. Easiest class I have taken. Let's you out early and tells you exactly what will be on the tests. Only warning: if you are going to need stats in the future, don't take him. I am now looking to audit another class. If not, go for it.
Terrible teacher that should hopefully retire soon. Wouldn't explain most concepts, he would just start doing problems and expected us to learn while watching. And his "tests" are terribly written and are only 10 questions. Which makes each mistake you miss costs you 10% of your only source of points in the class.
If you actually want to learn stats i strongly sudgest that you not take this class! Hes terrible at explaining the material and goes off topic to talk about his life story. You would learn more just from reading out of the book.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. He is a horrible teacher, who does not go by the book, does not give examples or clear explanations, and basically does not care about fully teaching the material. He says the text is wrong, and to go on the internet for help.. I would NEVER reccomend taking his class.
Just pay attention and take notes on big concepts. He doesn't use the book, and condenses what he thinks is the most important information and throws it at you. Tests are pretty easy; I didn't have to study well. He gives 10% total extra credit over the semester. No homework; tests are king. He can be rude; you have to ask him just the right way.
I really wish I hadnt of wasted the time He really made me dislike math more than ever. He doesnt take time to answer questions,he quickly reviews the coming assignment and refuses to answer questioned till hes done then assigns odd problems so you always have the answer ,never collects homework, he keeps the 90min class 45mins and leaves (F-)
I once asked vetrano a question and he replied "because I said so." He teaches you how to use your calculator not the subject. Although the class is an easy A if you show up and take notes, I would not recommend this teacher if you want to learn. P.s. although his stories are amusing they are not very professional.
I enjoyed his class, he assigns homework by telling students which odd practice problems are most relevant to section and leaves it to you to know what you need extra on. He shows students three different ways to do problems so they can each learn in their own way. I wish he was teaching next semester so I could follow his courses through stats.
His sense of humor is borderline inappropriate but you get used to it. He is a really smart guy to the point that he over simplifies everything and when it comes to doing it on your own, you're completely lost. Got all As in math in high school, got a D in his class.
If you are a bad test taker do not take this class. Entire grade is based on 3 test. Homework is optional. He blows through the material and makes it seem over simple. Sense of humor borders on inappropriate
Warning: DO NOT take this class if you are a bad test taker. Your entire grade is based on two tests and the final. There was no homework so it's on you to study. I didn't think the tests were too hard, but if you can take someone else, DO IT! He is not entirely clear and not very approachable
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He says that he wants to help, but when you ask for it he just tells you to review your notes and makes fun of you. He doesn't explain anything; talks about his personal life, goes off on useless tangents, and is always canceling class without notification. It's not worth your time to take his classes!!!!
I'm surprised there are a lot of bad reviews. I don't mind his class because I hate math and he doesn't collect homework he assigns. All you need to do is take good notes and you pass. It is stressful because there are only 3 tests you're graded on. I got a B first try and I made some dumb mistakes. Makes it easy to understand at least
Grade based on tests that are a little confusing, and the final is really hard (all theory and definitions we went over maybe once). During class, he goes off on unrelated tangents CONSTANTLY, has innapropriate humor, and gets annoyed when people ask questions. I only did well because a friend who previously took the class helped me study.
He is horrible, seriously, do not take this teacher. Bases the class off 3 tests, and he doesn't even give you a real study guide. So unprepared.
Everybody who gives Vetrano a bad review because the grades are based off 3 tests clearly never went to class. ALL class time is spent going over examples of what you'll see on those 3 tests. He's a little kooky at times, but in an entertaining way. If you go to class and do the examples he puts on the board, you'll pass with flying colors
No homework, 2-3 tests and a final depending on the semester. Really easy tests if you just study the practice problems he does in class or study the concepts online. It can be difficult to understand him or pay attention to lectures. Nice guy though and funny in his own way.
Be sure not to miss lecture! He doesn't really teach from the book. He will tell you exactly what will be on each exam and give examples of problems he'll ask. I've never done very well in math, but I got 100% on both midterms. As long as you understand how to do the problems how he wants, it's easy. He's easier than other professors!
He is a nice guy and easy to get along with, but he can be very confusing to the student who simply doesn't understand math. He also goes off topic a lot, and sometimes his jokes are funny but only because they're kinda lame at the same time. It is frustrating when the problems on the exams don't match up with the problems he gives you in class.
if you happen to not be in class the day of the test or forgot there was a test and didn't go. Then he will not let you take it. So if you miss a test you are screwed. He tends to babble about random stuff during lectures which makes the lectures a bit confusing. The class can be easy or very confusing. No inbetween
He doesn't assign any homework or give out any study guides. You have to listen extremely carefully and make sure you take crystal clear notes. ALL HE ASSIGNS IS 3 TESTS. IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT TEST TAKING, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. He's not the greatest teacher
I barely passed this class. Even tho I did all the optional hw, & made my own study guides. He frequently gives you the wrong info in the notes- and then expects you to know the right info on the tests. I highly recommend writing down the practice problems, making a study guide, and going over them with him after class. He will helpifheseesyoucare
I honestly thought this would be an easy class because he does not require homework. However, at the end I was actually wishing we had homework or any sort of practice for the exams. The class grade is based on three exams so it is very easy to fail. He requires an expensive book that I have never even opened. He also refuses to help.
The easiest math class I've ever took, because he not really talk about the derivation of the formulas and theorems but specific practices. You can pass as long as take good notes and do the example questions. Exams is pretty easy, but there is only two midterms and ten questions each time, if you failed one you will failed the course.
He only does two tests and four practice/extra credit tests (two of which you can take home), and as long as you know when those are being handed out/done/due, you really don't have to show up. He stops taking attendance after week 3, and then again on the day of the final. I didn't even buy the textbook and I was fine.
Great stats teacher! He really wants his students to understand the subject. He gives plenty of examples, and welcomes questions. He is very available outside of class for those needing help. Only 3 exams, so it can set you back if you fail one, but come on you only need to study for 3 exams, study and you'll do well!
While Vetrano tries to sympathize with students by telling tales of his own, I many times find it difficul to follow his lesson and his teaching stile where little or no participation is expressed by students. What strikes me the most is his little will to help me afterclass. He would often brag at me first that he had explained that during class.
I hope he reads this, I got an F on the first test and he encouraged me to try and save my grade, study hard and apply myself. I did and ended up with a pretty decent grade in the class after all.
If you are not a math major, take Vetrano. Go to class and you'll know exactly what will be asked on the tests. No homework or quizzes. He'll expect you to purchase the book, but you won't really use it. The class won't take up a lot of your time. Grades are solely based on exams, so if you learn the problems in class you should be good.
He is funny and all, but tough grader. The grades were all based on tests. He gave homework once in a while, but wouldn't check if you did it right, so no credit or knowledge from that obviously. Wish i had checked ratemyprofessor before taking his class.
Hes a really nice guy, he knows his stuff but he's a very tough grader. you don't get homework so he only grades on tests. Do not take his class if you are someone who likes to learn outside of class. Assigns homework but does not go over it or check to see if you're doing it right or if you need help.
there is no homework in this class so your entire grade will be based of exams. First exam I got an F but that motivated me to study harder and ended up passing the class. Usually half of the class will drop. You need to study to pass. Textbook was not used.
Dropped him the first time around & retook. Highly recommend, not a stressful class. HW recommended & will go over it if you ask. Use the textbook in class to follow along, get it to study. Tests are the only part of your grade, no EC. Midterm & final are cumulative SO STUDY FOR TESTS or you won't pass. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM, easiest class STUDY PLS
Your grade in the class is only based on 4 tests. Doesn't assign any homework so unless you don't need to practice outside of class, it's very challenging. Not clear in lectures at all but is willing to help students. I don't recommend him at all, always goes on long random rants while trying to teach something and it makes it SO confusing.
paul is so unhelpful, and told me to my face "i may just never get it" about an easy subject that i needed a question answered on. He rambles and makes strange comments constantly, which is very distracting. there is no homework which actually turned out to be a bad thing. If you don't understand something during the lecture good luck.
Here I am, 10 years later, making my first and likely only Rate My Professor for Paul Vetrano. I was thinking about him tonight. Grading: Tests only. Study up. Learn your equations, see how they apply to the world, and show up to class. Vetrano's stories when we'd chat out on the sidewalk during break have stuck with me forever. True human. Serious
He based our grade on only 3 tests instead of 4 because of the wildfires. He goes over what will be on the tests. He also offers help to students outside of class or after class. Likes to ramble a lot on random things. Kinda hard class
