this is by far the worst class that I have taken at UHCL. IT is beyond boring and hard to make yourself go sit through the class
This instructor disappointed me. We spent most of the class time learning about his opinions. He is very arrogant and lacks objectivity.
Pointless class to make him money off his Total Quality Management garbage. Pseudo-Intellectual, **** man...ashame too... could have been a great class since the leglaities of teaching are a very real issue. He is a joke...just like his class.
Unfortunately, this is the only teacher that teaches this class. If you have to take it, you're stuck! Basicly, this guy gets the opportunity to talk about himself for three hours a week and that's exactly what he does. He brags about all the books he reads in a month.
Rude, thinks he is smart, likes to hear himself talk, and is always bragging about stuff noone cares about (which in my opinion is a waste of time) I recommend taking any other option you have.
I really liked Dr. Wagener - He is very bright and he helped me to write better arguements. You have to explain your stance on everything - which was something that CompI and II do not stress. I would take him again - he grades fair.
What a waste of money and time. This man is so concerned about himself that you learn nothing about what you are actually suppose to learn. He brags a lot about how much better he is than you. He makes you feel stupid and does not seem to have a problem embarrassing anyone. I wish someone else offered the class, but no such luck. Good Luck!!!
This man is such a joke. He thinks he is so intellectual and is obviously not since it is all he talks about. You have to spend so much money on useless stuff he wrote! It is really pathetic that the School of Education makes you take his class-- says alot about them as well! This guy is lazy and so completely pseudo-intellectual.
I signed up for him because he fit into my schedule. I had heard before from a lot of people that he is hard. That is SO NOT TRUE. He is not hard, he just has high expectations, which I think is a good thing. He doesn't dumb it down like other teachers do. He ended up being a really good teacher.
He has no idea what he is talking about. This class would have been interesting had he actually talked about what he said he was. I never even opened the book and I made an A.
Dr. Wagner LOVES to talk about himself even thought it does not pertain to any subjects covered in the class. He likes to flaunt his intelligence but never really teaches anything. He is also very rude and insulting if you ask him questions. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
If you have any sense you will not take this man! . He is absolutely the worst professor I have ever had! He does not teach but expects you to know everything he does! He's rude, and will not work with students! He also is very unorganized and changes his assignments throughout the semester.
Thinks he's the most brillant man alive but is a horrible teacher. Personally I learned NOTHING in his class except for that I'm an idiot. (He will tell you that quite often if you take him) Not worth wasting your money. Out of 45 in class originally 15 finished. His class is awful.
Shame on UHCL for allowing this man to be a professor. You have no choice but to take him for Professional Seminar. You have to have the class to graduate and he is the only professor who teaches it. If I wanted to know something about him, I would buy his useless books. Don't ask questions in his class! He likes to make people feel stupid.
THe most egotistical professor I have ever had. He thinks he knows everything, thinks he has the right to tell us what we can and cant believe, feels that as Americans we have no right to form an opinion over a court case, such as Andrea Yates. UHCL is totally blind and stupid to allow this moron to teach. Plus he enjoys embarrassing students!
As long as you are quiet and do not try to make any comments to what he says, you can make a good grade in this class. Yes it is boring, and I did not agree with 99% of the things he said, but the class itself is not to hard to pass. He is the only teacher, so suck it up and take it in the summer if it will really kill you!!

He's hard to navigate around, but I made a lot of comments, and I got an A-. I worked for it though. I liked his class a lot. I would take him for other things, this is a class that will make a difference in your life, and if it doesn't, you may want to examine yourself.
You have to take this class and he is the only one teaching it. It is an awful class and you do not learn a thing. Good Luck and beware.
Don't go into this class being scared or with a bad attitude. People talk bad about him but he is not that bad. You learn alot in this class that is helpful in life as well as teaching. Just pay attention to his lectures and read the material and you should get an A easily.
He seems hard especially if you listen to people who are too stupid to pass an easy class. I mean, come on what was hard? the final is nothing more than a vocab test. you write one paper which happens to be at least 13pgs for an "A" and you do two group presentations. He comes of as hard but its not. Just listen and read the MSAP handout
One of the worst teachers you will ever have--and you WILL have him because, alas, he's the only one teaching this class. Here's the abbreviated version of the class: You are stupid. Dr. Wagner is smart. The end. For putting up with this, you'll get an A and lots of practice biting your tongue, which will be useful when you become a teacher.
Don't believe all of the scary "rumors". Wagner's biggest message is to seek the truth. So go into with an open mind and the right attitude and you will come out a much better person. He is a smart man with high principles. He wants all of his students to leave his class the same way! GREAT CLASS - GREAT PROFESSOR!
Wonderful class and instructor. The only people who didn't like it were the ones who didn't participate in the discussions. He has alot to say, it is useful information, and it makes you think about your priorities in life.
I liked Dr. Wagner's class. At first I was afraid of what the class was going to be like, but i actually enjoyed the class. I learned more than I thought I would. Plus his final exam was one of the easiest that I took last semester and the my class did not even have to do the 13 page paper because he forgot to put it into the syllabus.
I don't know what all the rumors are about! This class is the easiest class I have taken so far at UHCL. It required very little time outside of class with the exception of the presentation which was a group project so no one had a huge amount of work. He can be a bit abrasive at times but this class is certainly not difficult!
He he likes to take over student presentations. He could make some people cry!
Pro's: Smart man, somewhat caring. Con's:Likes to hear himself talk. Teaches his life story, not educational psych. Sign up for the other guy, even if you have to wait a semester...or 2. Horrible prof. Waste of time and $. Would NEVER take again
Easy class with very little work outside of class time. There is one major group project and 2 quizzes that you can't really study for really. Basically, it's an easy class but it is incredibly boring and repetitive...
It was an easy A but I left the class not feeling as if I learned very much. Most of the lectures where based off of articles that he had written. The "book" for the class was a notebook full of articles that again he had written. Also, this was an Education Psychology class but felt like and Ethics class. There are also two quizes that you must pass before you can get credit for the class and there isn't really any way to study for them. :) Have fun!
You have to BUY his syllabus which I thought should have been illegal! Other than that, I made an A and he is not as bad as people say! In fact, he "grows" on you as the semester passes!
I dont understand why everyone does not enjoy this class. He has some great information and ideas to share that expand. Trust in what he says and learn what you can. I really enjoyed it and the group project is insane!! But its a learning process in itself. Dont be afraid, its a great class.
This was the most ridiculous class. Sadly, I think I should have learned something in this class other than about his family and his ridiculous ideas. I learned nothing and it was a terrible 3 hours of sitting in his class every week. Try not to take him if you can...
His greatest enjoyment is to read to doctoral students the book he wrote.
attendance is not mandatory which is a plus. Made an A in his class, the test are not too hard, its kinda common sense stuff. i really did not study ever! He's just not a nice teacher, but I really didnt care as long as his stuff was easy and I got a good grade.
He is not a mean person or hard, he is just full of himself and boring. You don't really learn about the intended curriculum. Having to BUY his syllabus was ridiculous as was the rule of having to pass 2 quizzes that don't even count as grades, in order to pass the class. He's very smart & has interesting points but doesnt TEACH them. Disappointing
Seriously dissapointing! I cringe every time I have to attend this class and I wonder what I am supposed to be learning other than his opinions. As long as you keep your mouth shut and DO NOT disagree with this man, you will pass, but at what cost? It is a waste of time and money and you won't learn.
He comes off a little harsh, but I found him to be a very intelligent educator. He is extremely hard and sometimes I was confused as to what to take notes on, but I did learn a lot from this class.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER TAKEN. HORRIBLE CLASS. HE IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL AND REFUSED TO GIVE HELP.
This guy is really realy smart. He is responsible and expects same from students. He will give a low grade when deserved - something unusual here. Some who get a bad grade blame him rather than there own laziness. He is real understanding and helpful of people with real problems. Take him for a real college-like experience.
When you think of what a professor should be you can't help but think of Dr. Wagner, so widely read, articulate, genteel and when a student is in genuine need he is very caring. He has high no nonsense standards but works hard to help you get them. If you are a serious student be prepared for a treat - if not think twice be4 taken him.
I had heard that he was a really dfficult teacher, so of course I was scared to go into the class. However, he was a really great teacher! He does tend to tell stories and talk alot, but at least you're being told his mistakes and achievements so that you know how to make kids in your class learn how to ask questions!
I would not recommend this prof. His final is ridiculous, minimum of 10 pgs for one paper & min. of 5 pgs for another paper along with all the stipulations. What he has to say is a good message & he is very knowledgable. He explains none of the assigmnents & just seems arrogant. I am a very hard worker and not lazy but this class is just a bit much
Would not recommend him for a prof. Narrow minded with a huge ego. comes across as if he is better than his students. his favorite quote is something he said. THat should give you some type of feel for what youare getting into.
He is extraordinary. Smart, articulate and an incredibly broad range of knowledge. He is also the most professional professor I've ever had. If you want a UNIVERSITY experience take this guy. No easy grades. In his class you have to earn a grade - weird huh? but he makes it worth it. btw nice arms for an old guy
Did not enjoy him as a proffesor. Not very helpful. enjoyed hearing himself speak. More personal opinion than fact. as stated from others has an ego.
Classes like Dr Wagner's are the reason to attend a university. He speaks unequivocally and clearly, explains difficult subjects with clarity, and obviously spends a good deal of time preparing for class. Very professional; highly recommended.
Dr. Wagner is insightful, precise, and REAL. He explains difficult concepts so clearly I never leave his class confused, frustrated or overwhelmed...only inspired to learn more. He is a good person who cares about his students, always alerting us to upcoming events and job opportunities. Take notes in class, and do the readings.
He is very difficult to understand and refuses to help. I went to his office to ask him for help and he refused telling me to read the book.(I did and I didnt understand) He is arrogant, rude, and should NOT BE TEACHING TEACHERS!!!!! He is the worst example of a teacher that i've ever seen.
He knows the material like the back of his hand and is extremely helpful.Make sure you know enough of the material to engage in class discussion!
People miss the point of this class - this is the school's version of hazing. Wag is going to piss you off, make you doubt yourself, test you to see how you respond under duress - if you can't handle these things, you probably should not consider being a teacher. In the end, everyone that did the work got a good grade.
awesome prof! dr wagner is too cool! i hear he used to teach ivy league? the posts here are kinda disturbing; sounds like people getting weaned off of the southeast texas public school system where students get grades of "A" for no work at all.
Wanger is very intelligent teacher and I learned a lot from taking his course. I left his classroom always thinking and finding new ways to challenge myself. His class is challenging and it really requires you to work, so do not take this course if you are lazy. You will leave this course a better person and hopefully a better teacher.
Probably the most intelligent and respectful professor I have ever had. The shrill complaint below came from an education student - need I say more? This guy belongs with the Universty's best students. He's a real asset.
dubya is most cool! first of all, he wears spiffy suits - very professional (there are profs at other schools wearing flipflops to class), second of all he's got an education most men wearing suits daily can not even begin to fathom; thirdly, he is completely lovable and is all about his students. read your books closely and don't miss class!
I did not find his class hard. Extremely boring and just goes on forever. I have no idea what we were doing in the class. Half the class would fall asleep, the other half looking at the clock. His clarity is zero. The work expected is at a graduate level not undergrad. Sorry I hate to say this and I'm not being petty but ever hear of a breath mint?
Describing him as unprofessional rather than his colleague who allegedly maligned him with a student is preposterous. In addition we had six books with various opinions none that he wrote though he has pub'd more than most. He's smart and interesting and most professional
I cringed every time I had to go to his class cause he would stand there and talk about himself and his opinions the whole time. Wasn't clear on any of the assignments, didn't tell you what you had to study, and just a plain waste of time. Avoid this class if you actually want to learn something honestly.
Very opinionated and not clear about expectations. 20-30 page final that you can split with a partner, observation and paper, 2 quizzes you must pass to pass course, and a group book presentation. He is very hard to deal with take someone else if you can.
My mother had this professor and she said that his class is the only one she thinks about when making job related decisions nearly 20 years later. I can see why. He is clear and more well read than any professor I ever had. More than smart, he is exceptionally charismatic. From the first day of class stay alert. No time will ever be wasted.
I made an A in the class with turning in the final paper that was only half the length of the requirement. As long as you show up and halfway pay attention you should be fine. Also, don't wait til the last minute to retake the quizzes you have to pass
Took class on a lark. Got there and thought it was a class on astrophysics and evolution. Then science generally and the nature of knowledge claims. But last 7 weeks-best class I ever had!!!I will never forget it - he'll make you think and it feels good. I was always talking to friends about class
Agree with the last person. Our philosophy of religion class was awesome and surprising. Instead of bashing students thinking anc calling it critical thinking he raised questions but kept his promise to help us defend our positions better than when we started. It made doing papers and re-doing them feel you accomplisehed something important. Cool!
Easy! Listen to him talk pass his two artifact quizzes and whatever he says its usually about himself... however a year later you will be able to pass the PPR because he is the only professor in the SOE that gives vaulable information on the people who the state tests you over
After 2 years at UHCL, he was certainly my worst preofessor. Book assignments are very biased and unrelated to what we should be learning. Most of class is spent raising his ego and on Columbus day he gives a lecture about how awesome Columbus was. Being quite educated about Columbus, I challenged him with dates and facts. He looked ridiculous.
He's brilliant. He's also a good teacher. He uses great examples to help you understand rather than just memorize something. The idea introduced in his class get talked about by students more than any other. It's truly a worthwhile and special experience. If I had room for electives I'd take him for other stuff
I think most of us started the class thinking it was going to be like sociology, comparing religions. It was so different. Lots of science, some math and logic all showing what sorts of arguements would be required to make arguements in support of religious claims or reveal the weakness in such arguements. Its probably the best class I ever had
Dr. Wagner is a very nice man. He is sort of all over the place and you never know where you stand as far as grades go, but otherwise you will learn a lot in his class. It seems harder than it really is. Just do the work and you will be fine.
It is startling how much you learn. He engages you in conversation you never realize how much youve learned until the end when it all comes together from LaoTzu to Daniel Kahnemann, Aristoltle to Amartya Sen. He keeps his promise to keep our "pockets full" forever. You forget the content of most classes not this one!!!Practical and theoryall in 1!
I believe he is a nice man. But honestly, the class was all over the place. I really didn't learn anything, and the lectures were so long and boring it was hard to follow. Fortunately, if you just do the work (it's not hard) you will pass. The work load is low, just a lot of boring lectures. He could make his classes a little more interesting.
He is a really interesting and decorated prof. Didn't use book. He goes on and on about his encounters with authors. Do the assignments and listen carefully. We had a small class and he was open for discussion and liked when we did .
If you are taking 4-5 classes I would not recommend this class. Work is not hard, but there is plenty of it and time consuming. No need to put too much stress on yourself. On some of the assignments, detail was vague, however I loved the field experiences. Learned a lot from them. Not big on psych. Just get your work done and you will be fine.
I do agree work can seem overwhelming with multiple classes, but do the work and you'll be fine. Work is not hard, but makes u think. I learned things I didn't know before, and to clarify, ed psych is combined w/ moral ethics. a 2 for 1 deal. u will need to keep the MSAP throughout your semesters. After you get it graded, get it back. u'll need it.
Pretty much the most brilliant person I have ever met. He is easy unless you take advantage of the situation. You will probably never learn more in one semester inanother class. If you are here to learn this is the class.. If you want to just pay for an "A" there's probably better vendors.
Dr.Wagner is a genius. If you get the opportunity to take his class, I highly recommend it, by the end of the semester you'll thank your lucky stars. There are two field trips, and a few papers, lots of online discussions, and only two quizzes that don't count towards grade. TAKE THIS PROF!
This guy is a total pain to take. Don't expect to learn any psychology. He thinks he's teaching ethics but just uses class as a soapbox to rant about what he thinks. Assignments are EXTREMELY vague. He never offers a real assignment page or instructions, which is frustrating when you try to complete them. Didn't find him to be very professional.
All our books were written by psychologists except one written by a biologist. Its a great course. As we finish the course he has an exercise to help us assemble a tht we learned. It was amazing. Most had no idea how much we had learned until we went through the exercise. Assignments cover a lot of territory. Pay attention so you don't get lost
It's a great class. I took it last summer. Less than half the work others talk about who took it during the year. he's really laid abck and interesting in summer.
I was really excited to take this class but it was not like I expected. I took it during the summer so I am not sure what he does the other semesters but all he did was talk about his life and what he thinks is right. Do not have an opinion different than his or her may not like you. If you just do the work and agree with him, you will do just fine
Great class. Used a half a dozen books from different authors instead of of one textbook. Has us use utube to listen to the most famous scholars. Smart but very careful to give clear explanations. He also teaches in HSH and I want to take his class there too.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Nothing is clear, has tons of useless assignments that aren't even for a grade, but you have to do them to pass. Doesn't tell you when anything's due. Won't respond to emails. Makes you feel like you're dumb if you don't understand 100% of what he's teaching. Just awful! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Take this class. You'll love the lectures if you want to learn. Some assigments aren't graded like a letter to your most professional teacher ever - learned a lot writing that.He bends over backwards for students with special conditions. He's seen a lot and that might make him more compassionate than most. Good guy. Grading is fine- fair
My husband had me take him. He said that he'll make you feel like you're in college and not just more high school. It's true. The class was WONDERFUL! You cover a bunch of books but you don't have to read them all, groups do it and report back. The work sounds like a lot then you realize I'm done. He's easy going, that helps. I never felt dumb.
Awesome Instructor. AWESOME. Great class. I would pay just to hear him lecture it's that good.
I have never been to the Ivy League but after this class I feel as if I have. This guy is wonderful. He once held class in a spectacular room at the Federal reserve Bank for us so we could think of money as a network of promises! He made me realize out moral theories and actions make the world go round.
Loved it. Everyone in my group loved it. Actually eaveryone I know loved it so I don't get a bad review. The night before class you start thinking about it and after class you talk to everyone about the class. I have never had a class had that effect on me and I wasn't the only one.
Awesome! Ditto I think I'll always remember this class!
So many classes just repeat other classes I've taken. Everything in this class was new or at least a new angle on everything. He makes you think so much your brain might hurt but its worth it. You'll also learn what it really means to respect the IDEAS of others. Good class & not too hard
He use to be on TV for pub;ic TV. You'll understand why when you take him. He gives great examples and seems to look you in the eye the whole time as though your the only one there. Its impossible to fall asleep in class unless you start before class begins haha. The class is well worth it. He gave a talk to the student leadership program, great!
Other profesors tell you about their children or when they taught 3rd grade. He is the only one I've had who personally knows great people like B.F. Skinner, Kohlberg. Erickson and Gardner and some Nobel people too? Sometimes class is just WOW. Don't miss it.
It's just a super class. Take it if you get a chance.
Wagner does not respond to any emails, is incredibly unclear on directions & never tells you when stuff is due. Anytime I had a question, he either rambled about some unrelated topic for 5 min. or told me to ask a student. Though some of the things he has to say are interesting and he has a lot of knowledge, he is the worst teacher I have ever had.
This is the most intellectual course in the program. For anyone interested in going into university teaching Wagner is an excellent role model. Glad I took the class
This was my best class this semester. I was always talking to my family about it
This class is the best!!!! It was like being in a movie!
I feel like his class is super unstructured. I took it in the summer I felt it was really easy as long as you do the work and lay attention. He challenges you yo think for yourself at a higher level. I thought it was super easy but intimidating.
Worst professor ever! Spends the entire class lecturing. Don't make the mistake of questioning him, just sit and nod and you'll make an A . Assignments are pointless and grading is crazy. People that didn't do the final at all made A+'s while others that did made lower. $80, 20pg book is mandatory and he's the author, go figure. Egotistical...
Until this class all my classes just seemed like more high school. You learn sooooo much. You will never feel the same about aimless test-taking ever again. You will think and get everyone around you to think. His group approach is VERY unique
Really good class. Actually I think it changed my life in many ways. He role models well. He's had so many experiences that he can really apply. He keeps you filled with hope that we can make things better by being serious and morally conscious in everything we do. I really do want to make a difference now.
This guy is horrible. Do not question him. Do not disagree with him. "He knows all." Very disrespectful to any student who rubs him the wrong way. Many in our class dropped because they were publicly humiliated in class for something incredibly stupid. He basically thinks everything he says is right and whatever you say MUST be wrong...-.-
Dr. Wagner is an amazing role model! His lectures are inspirational and worthy. I learned so much from Dr. Wagner and has inspired me to become a better person. His lectures are worth listening just attend class and listen you will make an A:) The quizzes are over his lectures just take notes.
The way this class taught made it hard for me to learn anything. The assignment instructions were vague, so trying to complete anything correctly became hard and anxiety-inducing, and the lectures often felt more condescending than helpful. And he didn't answer my emails asking for help. I really wanted to enjoy this class, but I just couldn't.
This guy is so friggin smart. If you go to his office you'll see why. He's probably read all those books. Course seems tough at first but then comes together and is amazing. Grading is actually pretty easy unless you are use to not doing anything. His integrity makes you realize what respect is all about. Good guy and class.
Good class, Good Guy, realy a very good guy
Dr. Wagner's classes are long and very repetitive. Be prepared to stay for the full three hours. He is very close minded and believes that he "knows all" as a previous reviewer mentioned. If he does not like an opinion he will publicly humiliate classmates. Avoid!
Instructions were very vague. Seems to enjoy telling stories about himself for three hours a week, repeating many. A few stories were even offensive. Despite asking the class to be open minded, he does not tolerate differences of opinion.
Dr. Wagner is a GREAT PROFESSOR! You have 2 quizzes that you must pass in order to pass the class, if you show up to class you're more than likely to pass. He keeps the class interesting. There's a group project worth 50% of your grade, holocaust paper, a final that consists of 4 questions and the discussion board. Do the work, and you'll pass. :)
He Challenged me. First college class that felt like a college class.
You have one major presentation that is over a book that he assigns to each group. There are two tests/quizzes that you have to take in order to pass but as long as you try he passes you. Yes he talks forever and ever but its not so bad. Also, the final.. 4 page paper single spaced in 10 point font.
Confusing at first, make more sense later. Major group project, 2 quizzes, letter writing assignment, museum trip paper. Final was (5) 1-pg essays. Majority of work is the group project over a book. Interesting lectures. Attendance not mandatory, but attend and take notes! Class will make you think a lot. I enjoyed it. Very intellectual convos.
My favorite professor.
He is a good professor. 1 group project major part of your grade.
Where to begin... This was BY FAR the hardest class I've ever taken. Dr. Wagner pairs you in groups for your group project on the first day of class! The project is worth 50% of your grade so start early. There are a lot of mandatory assignments that do not even receive a grade. The final is a nightmare but you can start as early as the first week
Dr. Wagner was super sweet and always responded to emails punctually. The assignments are very time consuming. HE DOES NOT POST GRADES UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER. Grades: 1 group project 50%, Discussion Board 20%, Holocaust Paper 10%, Final paper 5 pages (10 point font single spacing) 20% plus 2 quizzes, letter to a teacher, MSAP pages 1&2 done
Where to even begin... Prof Wagner has a talent for posing challenges that seem unanswerable and will often leave you feeling completely clueless. Your entire grade depends on your group project, based on reading one book and selecting one presenter to go up and suffer Wagner's dissection of the book. Overall not a hard class, just tedious work.
Awesome Brilliant and Kind. He is an old school gentleman
Tough book in logic, but he augmented it with some easier reading to make the tough book more understandable. He is very patient and works through really difficult material in probability. He can be hilarious sometimes and that helps with a logic course!
Logic sounds scary with truth tables and so on. He brought probability into it and decision theory. I am still learning from it. He used easy books to back up the big book and "cushioned " our grades. Its one og the best classes I've taken so far
Wagner is very inspiring. He's bright and never fails to do his job. You either love him or hate him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Group Project worth 50% of total grade, and lectures are long, drawn out, and boring. He is very unorganized and rude, and can be a real jerk when responding to emails. There are a lot of assignments that don't receive a grade, but if you don't do them you don't pass. Final is a 5-15 pg paper 10 pt font single space.
DO. NOT. TAKE. WAGNER. At first he seems like a cool guy, very knowledgeable. However, he has a big ego and tries to make you feel stupid. He's extremely rude both in emails and when you go to his office. He is incredibly disorganized. This class was an awful experience, no doubt the worst class & prof I've had in over 3 years.
He attempts to go by the syllabus, but forgets everything on it. Gives quizzes over material not covered, must pass to pass the class. Required online discussion boards, he takes them off w/o notice so keep up with them. He gives the same lectures several times. None of the work for the class is difficult, just frustrating bc he doesnt give details
Group project 50% of grade is to read a book and report/present on it. Books are difficult read. Changes course syllabus as he pleases when he pleases. Interesting lectures.
Overall a good professor. The only downside is the organization. It was difficult to know when things were due.
If this guy doesn't inspire you then you aren't inspireable. He's also brilliant and played in every big leagues. Great course but not a pay for an a course
This is my fifth psychology course and I learned more in this than all the others put together. I will never forget this class. He'll make you smarter and more moral
Loved it. Group work but nothing like I've ever seen before. Creative and fair. He was in the army Officer candidate school and has also taught business management so his approach to groups is all about team building and responsibility easy if all pull together for good group. Oh yeah don't let him think you are lazy.
I didn't know anything about the course or instructor. I am not even an education major. I just took an education course. This turned out to be the best course and instructor I have ever had.
Best class ever
Group work taught a lot about leadership and teamwork. I will use the model in my own teaching
You learn a lot - ask lots of questions
A choice selection! You will never again take things for granite
It has been a few years since I had this class but what he taught about evolutionary psychology and positive psychology is the best stuff I learned in college for teaching.
He's done so many things. He is really interesting I got to go to Harvard for a workshop and met Dr. Howard Gardner and Dr. Chris Dede and they both knew him. You will count yourself lucky to have someone like him at least once.
I had a course in deductive logic. This was different. Much more on inductive logic and probability and fallacies. Great examples. Two textbooks, one hard and one easy. He balances between to two so you don't get frustrated
Best class ever, been to some of the best universities, group work unusual but very practical
He would go off on a tangent for 30-45 min telling us the same stories over and over again. If you disagreed with something he said he would just ignore you. Very disorganized never knew when things were due. Never learned anyone's names so I nearly failed the class because he gave me someone else's grade, actually made an A. Absolute nightmare.
Ours was a big class so I doubt he knows all names. He tries to be flexible. Smartest teacher I have ever had. I am going to try to take him again
I've never had a professor who personally knew Benjamin Bloom BF Skinner and so on. It is interesting to learn about the world we only usually read about. This was special.
Group projects you will actually enjoy. You will remember what you learn for a long time. It is never a repeat of things you already know from other classes. If you don't work together with other people very well you will have trouble in this class.
Smartest professor I have ever had so far. He will take the time to explain anything to you at length. His office is like a museum. You will learn team work like never before. And you will see education in light of the Holocaust like you never imagined. Just don't be a "giggler" and you will do fine.
Dr. Wagner really is a gem. He aims to educate, not robotically but by allowing student engagement. Do not be alarmed - he will first speak a lot, but soon YOU will be the one speaking. And speak up! He's hearing impaired (Army vet)
Fun class. Most published professor I've ever met. I think they should name a sandwich or something after him - truly , he's that good.
He talks like a real professor but don't let that scare you. Its a good class and you learn a lot and THINK.
We only had one skinny book but it was a minimester course. Really linteresting lectures.
Very tough subject matter but he is brilliant. If you are afraid to ask a question in class he explains things really well on Blackboard for yo. He really wants you to get a good grade.
He invites you to THINK! He is unlike any teacher you have ever had before. He is brilliant! He is not a tough grader either. Truly participate in the DB on Blackboard, go above and beyond in the group project, THINK and you'll be fine. :-)
He does make you think. Example,"The very act of grading can sometimes compromise the educational value of an assignment."
Fifty percent of my grade was for a group project. Insane. Thankfully I took charge and micromanaged, but damn. His lectures were really just him talking at length and going off on tangents. A lot of these reviews called him "brilliant" but I don't see it. You can tell he's intelligent, but I got nothing from this class except a headache.
I loved the class. This was the first professor I ever had who has written a book and he has written many. He cane tell you about things most others cannot because he was there. You will think in this class but not because you are trying to memorize everything. My boyfriend has had several professors who have written books at UT.
I hate group work but not in this class. It is a completely different design than anything you'll experience. He got the idea from being in the military and it works. I will use it when I teach. We had a good group too. Maybe because no one tried to micromanage us. Good class! and yes thinking will happen and that's good right?
The course is logic. II never knew there was so much to good thinking before. This is something you will use for life. He is great at explaining things.
Totally different from anything you can imagine. He' smart and understands the students point of view who want to learn. You will be surprised how it all ties in.
Unorganized and rambles on during classes. I understand what he's trying to accomplish, but he only teaches one way expecting you to catch on. He does not ever say what needs to be done or when it is due. Tells you to complete an assignment but never fully explains the assignments. Very vague and uninterested in helping you.
I always looked forward to class.
This class isn't hard, BUT there are few grades and his lectures are him telling stories about people he has met in the Psychology world. His "Textbook" is a book he wrote and you have to do a group report about another book (my group had to do another book he wrote) and then give a 30min presentation w/ 10-page handout. SO MANY ONLINE DISCUSSIONS
He is a very inspirational man and has a lot of knowledge that I enjoy listening to, but he is really difficult to follow when it comes to assignments. His blackboard is a mess, cant tell when it was posted or if it is relevant to your class or another's. Quiz's are verbal and you are graded as a class, don't miss class when you can get an easy 100
His class wasn't too hard and he was a good professor, the only problem I had was with the schedule and details for assignments. He was never very specific, which sometimes led to a lot of confusion. Though, if you just ask him, he's quick to respond and answer any questions you may have.
Literally I only enjoyed his lectures, the homework was VERY sparse and interesting. The main one is the final exam. It's 5 questions 1-3 pg answers for each. I could only manage 1.5 pages per.
It is actually fun if you like to think and grading is not especially hard. Gives you time for other classes especially around test time. Responds to email or BB right away. Sends information notes on BB that are just for fun. Not tested over just to read if you want. Pretty good. His teams' approach helps you make friends.
Easy grader but its not an easy class. Make sense? You learn a ton. He knows everyone other professors are teaching about. It is amazing. Be sure to go to his office sometime it ful of awards, books pictures of him with famous people and antick furniture. Most interesting class and professor Ihad so far
Great Professor to get students to critically think. I went home every day thinking about something he said and researched it. It challenged me to become a better student and hopefully a teacher. Not a fly by course, if you can grasp the concept he teaches you will continue to learn.
He is very passionate about getting his students to think about psychology. Your opinion matters. If you are going the wrong direction, he will give great feedback. I enjoyed his course.
Your required to pay for books you will not use that he has rights to, he will undermined you if you ask questions, there are NO rubrics, he does not post grades, and he will not answer simple yes or no questions via email, also he will not give due dates and so much more DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!
Worst teacher I have ever had he does not care period .
This professor will remind you of an eccentric home designer who's always right. Terrible at communication and syllabus is unclear. He will respond late with "per your syllabus"
Professor Wagner sparked a curiosity in me that has yet to fade. He gets you thinking about very complex ideas about human psychology, and brilliantly ties them in to teaching relevance. The class itself can feel confusing, but as long as you are thinking critically about what you write/turn in you should be ok. Go visit him in his office.
He met with us any time we wanted to zoom 7 days aweel. Just give him 24 hours notice. None of us ever had a professor that accessible. He jokes and says he had no life but us. Probably the smartest person I ever met.
My experience in Professor Wagner's class was horrible. We received no instruction. And when I say no instruction - I mean none at all. There was little to no communication from him. In fact, when it came to our final exam he retracted the deadline by a week. I feel deeply deprived of the course and the education I could have received.
Syllabus was a mess. Blackboard announcements were all over the place. No clear instruction on when assignments need to be completed. Said Final Exam was in blackboard announcements but could not find it. No indication of which announcement was the final exam.
This class is terrible. Most of the work is on discussion post and we have to reply to 3 by the end of the week. Try to see your grade? Nope! You dont even know if youre passing or failing. He speaks non stop for HOURS and sometimes the conversations go elsewhere. You have 4 essays. All 2-3 pages each and along with a 6 page final. Worst class
This is the worst professor at UHCL, he changes his mind about what he wants and doesn't follow his syllabus at all. He doesn't have a grade book on blackboard and never tells you how you're doing! He writes all the books required. His instructions are unclear and he doesn't give constructive feedback. He's so rude and I wouldn't take him again.
This guy is a star. Read through all the posts here and you will understand the difference between the contributions. He gets gardes back really fast. There is a assignment on BB that takes all semester so he can't give a grade on that till the end. I am so glad I got to have him as a professor!!
DO NOT TAKE ANY COURSE WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Should NOT be an ed. professor because he can't teach. Really tough grader, but you know he gets the money regardless for his endless pile of books HE wrote. Nothing constructive about the little feedback he gives, 0 grades at all imputed. Don't know your grade till the end. WORST PROFESSOR EVER AND RUDE
Professor Wagner is VERY unclear about his instructions. He does not answer questions clearly and expects you to have 3 substantive BB discussions. You could think they're substantive, but most likely they aren't to him. You do not know if your passing or failing until the end of the semester. oh and also, he can is rude when giving you "feedback"
Professor Wagner is very knowledgeable in what he knows. The discussion boards contributions, you have to be very careful with. You may think that you did a good job, but to him it wasn't, so it will count against you. I did not like that we have to buy all of his book, only to use it for a few chapters.
I had this Dr. Wagner several years ago. I loved his class. He was very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He is not an easy professor. You will have to do the work to do well in his class. Good luck!
He is legendary. all the good ways I mean. If you want to slip by in a class avoid him. But if you take him you will triple think everything you thought you knew. He has written a bunch. You know what the author thinks when you ask him because he often is the author or knows the author. Easy grader but don't be lazy it will backfire on you.
He leads rather than tells. Big difference. I never thought so hard. He can make you doubt everything with his questions. But that's a good in this case.
He's really interesting. He might be the most famous person I ever met except for two Astro players, Definitely he is the most famous teacher I ever had. His life spreads way out besides just school. His grading stuff is different but ok.
He is actually the rudest professor I have ever had. Instead of offering helpful feedback on my discussion boards he would put things like "no" ":(" His lectures were him bragging about himself and his books without any depth. He would not clearly answer questions. do not take him if you have a choice
His instructions are unclear and inconsistent. He does not follow his own syllabus. Poor feedback on discussion posts and assignments. NOT consistent with grading and contradicts himself. Grades cannot even be seen until the end of the semester, so you have no idea if you're passing or not. REQUIRES you to buy textbooks that he has written.
Repeats the same stories and even whole lessons, assigns his own books (4, not cheap), refuses to give grades until the end of the year so it's difficult to tell how you're doing but thankfully grades easily, doesn't allow for student input after class starts, very rude when responding to emails. Not hard to pass but expensive and miserable.
Take the four previous ratings with a grain of salt. Each has the same misspelling for the Rubric (EDCU). Same person posting each time? The class is better than ok.
So smart. Inspirational!!! He told us about growing up in the streets of Chicago next to a Railroad freightyard. That inspired me to think I can become more than I ever thought. Believe in yourself and you can truly make things happen. I always respected him more than any professor
My most inspirational moment in college. On the board he wrote in big letters character, dignity, brotherhood then read King;s Dream. He had us sit there in silence and he left. I had heard it b4 but never like this. Never had a moment in college like that again. He really cares about understanding there's a point to life and caring for others..
Caring. As a child his life was threatened by armed KKK. for helping some Dr. give medical care to poor African- Americans. Hooded KKK said leave or they would die. That inspired us, serve with real purpose. I never understood importance of purpose like I did after his story. The KKK said yankees shoudn't interfere with the KKK's local culture.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN! He makes you purchase 3 books and you have to read them. He does not show you your grade until the end of the semester and does not give any rubrics for essays you need to write. He is very rude! Anytime he is asked a question he would always be rude or ignore you! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
I did not enjoy this class at all. I think he just likes to hear himself talk for 3 hours straight. Syllabus is all over the place and it was hard to find important information. Grades are nowhere to be found on blackboard. No rubric on the essays so its hard to get a good grade. 3 Books are mandatory and written by him.
This class is disappointing. He doesn't give grades until the end of the semester.Has three required texts, all written by him.Does not have rubrics and syllabus is hard to follow.Talks for 3 hours straight. This is supposed to be an IN PERSON class. Many have dropped the course or just don't show up on zoom. Will be talking to my advisor.
This class can be a challenge, but with the right approach it's quite rewarding. While the professor expects a lot, using resources like unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help. Stay engaged and you'll gain valuable insights.
these reviews are all over the place just like his class! some of these 5 stars they sound made up lol. this class has great concepts, poor execution.syllabus is sloppy. he seems to think we still use blackboard at UHCL. i wanted to like this class but i feel let down especially this being such an important class for my major. womp womp.
He spent the entire semester repeating the same 5 stories from his life (that were completely irrelevant to the class). The books required are books he co-authored, and you have to read them but never really do much with the reading. The class was supposed to be F2F but we only met in person once the whole semester. Super unclear grading criteria.
Very smart and excellent way of talkling. He sounds like a real professor. you'll remember the class.
Does not cover materials to meet course objectives. Lectures on his personal life history with no relevance to what is required learning for the TExES certification exam. All course materials were written or co-authored by him. Reading assignments were not applicable to the course objectives and did not apply to TExES certification exam.
I don't even know where to start I am currently in the semester of this class, anticipated to finish in December. This class has absolutely zero structure and absolutely no relevance. He talks on and on about his personal life disregarding student concerns about the actual class. I wish I would've read his reviews before taking him. Just run.
Lectures are just three hour rambling sessions about his life experiences that don't pertain to the course. The assignments consist of three weekly discussion boards, and he often won't give substantial feedback at all and instead opts for one word replies. He doesn't know how to share a syllabus. A third of the class dropped in three weeks. BEWARE
He's smart, well=known nationally, easily shares is friendly and respectful, I don't get the recent bad sayings.
I registered for an in person class, and we only met in person for the first two classes. The rest were held on zoom. The class consists of Professor Wagner talking for the ENTIRETY of the class period. No powerpoint, no rubrics. He believes that rubrics limit students, so at times the instructions get very confusing.Very writing heavy class.
This professor is retiring, apparently. No course content, no real assignments, just the professor sharing the same handful of life stories or opinions. Doesn't answer any questions or teach anything and all required readings are authored by him. In person course but was on Zoom entire semester. Took weeks to grade midterms.
This professor has absolutely no rubrics in his class. This makes assignments very confusing and difficult to do because there is absolutely no instructions for assignments. He goes on and on yapping about absolutely nothing and also, he waits to post ANY grades until the end of the semester. So don't come into this class with high hopes.
