A really good teacher lectures are actually helpful and its pretty interetsing stuff.
Really good teacher, uses examples to explain concepts good about helping students and a overall positive vibe
Really good prof. Friendly and has very clear notes. Worth it to go to class. But beware, his mulitiple choice tests are tricky!
He is just sooooooo nice! He is one of my favorite profs in UBC!!!
very boring...:(
I hate this man. He was always VERY slow and vague w/ his answers and would use words like "I would assume that..." going to class is useless cuz nothing he talks about can answer any of the questions on his exams. ur better off praying to buddha. or sitting behind someone smart.
This was one of my most enjoyable classes in my university career. Wehr kept everything interesting, often incorporating humour anecdotes into the lectures. He was always available for extra help throught the course. Over a fun and informative class!
His lecture can be boring, but it is very clear. Tricky exams. But he is very nice when you ask for help
great instructor !
A really great lecturer, a great speaker. He's probably one of the nicest profs at UBC. Cracks jokes occassionally, which makes the class a little more fun. Tests are rather fair. He's also eager to help students during his office hours. I'd recommend him if you want to take a PSYC course at UBC.
Any first year students should take PSYC 100 just for the extra knowledge that can help you thru out university. and Prof Wehr was great!
Really nice prof. Lots of reading necessary, but good text in my opinion. His lectures are really close to the text, but what isn't in the book will be in the lecture and DEFINITELY on the tests. There is a lot of memorizing involved, but overall he makes the lectures interesting and full of great material. I definitely recommend him for psych 100.
GOOD!!!
Very interesting lectures with clear notes in powerpoint form. Also up on the internet for students to download. Funny guy. Fair tests. Made my first year psychology class very enjoyable. One awesome and inspiring prof.
I did not like this class because it is more like a biology class instead of a psyc class. Really convenient because Do not really have to attend to lecture because notes are posted on the internet. But really hated those tricky m/c and short answers... very easy project but tough on analyzing results..really picky on grammar instead of content
Wehr's a pretty good prof---he's very clear in what he teaches and expects us to know, and you can definitely appreciate his sense of humour during classes. I wish there was a bigger chance to interact with him like with other profs with smaller class sizes but i really have no complaints about him at all. Definitely recommend him.
Good-natured guy and appreciates his students. :) Straightforward lectures from PPT which he would post up online. some hilarious MCQs!
Awesome. Exactly what I wanted out of a professor when I went to university. Extremely straightforward and obviously puts a lot of effort into his job. As long as you're willing to try and pay attention there is no way you will leave this class with a poor mark (because you'll know the material).
Great prof. Tells interesting anecdotes to help you remember certain concepts. Provides you with everything you need to do well in the course.
Awesome Prof, we had a lot of convos during his office hours, he is great. Take his class if you want a solid background for higher level Psyc courses. His is a great class for Psychology Majors because he does a lot of bio and introduces some basic statistics.
He makes psychology sounds much more interesting than I have expected.
Great teacher! Lectures are clear and exams are relatively easy.
Great Prof. Don't trust what the last comment says. Dr. Wehr is clear when explaining and fair when marking. Definitely a great choice for a first entrance in Psychology
Good teacher. Has good judgment when marking. All the negative comments about him are from people who didn't put in sufficiant effort into their studying and thus received low marks and are bitter.
He explains every concept really well. Great professor. If you go to class and read over all his notes and parts of the textbook you'll do great.
Dr. Wehr is the absolute best. His slides are detailed enough that you won't suffer in the class if you get sick and don't actually attend the lecture, but you still receive benefits from attending the lecture. Perfect balance.
Great prof!
Straight forward prof...no need to attend classes as he posts all his lecture slides.
My favourite prof this semester! Extremely interesting and clear lectures. Very organized class, fair tests (they're not easy, but they are very reasonable.) Love this class.
Should definitely take his courses! If you have any concerns with his lectures, he would be explaining to you patiently (: One of the best profs!
He doesn't answer questions well, and he made many mistakes with teaching us the wrong material (which I find incredibly embarrassing for a prof). The material is disorganized, and I hated this course basically. UBC seems to have pretty low standards.
He was an excellent professor. People who would ask questions unrelated to the topic, he would attempt to answer, even though it was unnecessary. Was very nice, and worked hard considering this was his first time teaching this course. RECOMMENDED, amazing prof
Awesome professor! Easy exams, no quizzes, straightforward questions, the questions for the short answers part were posted months earlier before the midterms/finals. I had never studied the textbook, his slides were sufficient enough to help you do well. His teaching style was easy and clear, and he replied email quickly. A great professor.
Mmmmmm whatta man whatta man whatta mighty mighty good man!
Dr. Wehr is my favourite professor so far. He is very good at explaining things, and funny, too. He made the boring material interesting. The end.
A great Professor, interesting lectures, clear& straight forward! Should definitely take his class! :)
Super awesome prof. My favorite Psych prof so far and I'm a Psych major. Attend lectures, memorize lecture slides, skim textbook and you should be fine :). warning: loads of info to memorize, but no trick questions, straightforward stuff! If you're interested in different mental disorders and you're hardworking, then this course is for you
he talks in a manner that is hard to listen too. unclear at some points. his lecture slides contain far too much material to properly memorize. i think his teaching attitude is great, but his strategies are terrible. if you want to look for easy grades, you are in the wrong place. again, nice guy, bad teaching methods.
Great prof, so interesting! He makes class worth going to, he helps make everything straight forward. All his exams include both text and lecture, no trick questions.. So helpful!
If you have taken biology 121 and psych 100, this is essentially just a marriage of your two, which in turn may make it boring. However, class is structured in a way where lack of attendance won't damage your mark. Study the slides, reinforce with the textbook; straight forward class.
Great teacher, really interesting, really engaging. Grading is fair, lectures are fascinating. You can tell he has a passion for the material. Passionate teacher that tries to instill a desire to learn in his students. Wish I had him for 100. Would take the course again for sure.
never answers email, cant stand his slides, not a good prof. do NOT take his class.
Absolutely an amazing professor. He is engaging in class and humorous at times. Lecture notes reflect exams, but are occasionally very condensed and it helps if you're at class. Textbook is tested on, but mostly is useful for clarification purposes while you're studying. Not an easy course, but thats expected. Will take work to get an A grade.
First of all, SCREW ALL NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT HIM. Yeah yeah I know this is subjective, but cuh-MON, how can ANYONE criticize this guy! He's like the most amazing, clear, interest-holding, knowledgeable and motivated (as well as motivating) teacher! Dr. Wehr rules
I was surprised to see people disliked this prof. Professor Wehr has been the most helpful and informative prof in my first year. His powerpoints are crystal clear, his tests are fair (but you'd better study), he has a good personality but most impressive (imo) he went out each class to get to know each student by name. Not easy in a large class.
BEST PROF EVER!!
Very fair professor. Outlined a very clear idea of what was expected and the class was set up to have a very linear relationship between time put in and grade received. Overall, I am completely satisfied with the teaching.
He's alright, but you don't need to go to lectures to understand the material since he practically read of the slides when I took him during first year. Maybe he's changed? But I did like how he knows who his students were and he's very approachable.
Wonderful professor!! SO helpful and caring, and really knows his stuff. He made an effort to know all of his students names in our class of 80 :) he's a sweetheart.
Great Prof. Always cracking jokes in class, makes it enjoyable to go to class!
This prof is awesome and possibly my favourite prof in 3 years of university! Super approachable, made the lectures very interesting, and the 50 minutes just seemed to zoom by. I was very interested in this course's subject matter as a result, and can't stop raving about it. A must take!!
Extremely helpful and nice. Not to mention attractive. ;) He made the material very interesting. He's super funny, always cracking (slightly inapproprate) jokes. The lectures were very enjoyable. Don't miss class though, his exams for this class are about 95% based on lectures.
Great Prof! Clear, understanding and fair. All you have to do is show up and pay attention and you'll do fine! 86 Final Mark without too much trouble.
A great professor. I hated anything to do with evolution before taking this course, but somehow he made the topic interesting AND comprehensible. Always willing to help. Detailed slides.
He is amazing. I wish I could take 208 again.
AMazing Prof! His lectures are extremely entertaining, his tests are fair (mostly lecture based to make sure you attend class + skim text). He's super approachable outside of class and tries his best to answer any questions during lecture. Not to mention he's super attractive too!
Very easy to approach and always tries his best to answer your question as well as assist your learning needs in anyway (extending deadlines). Lectures are entertaining, though I didn't find attendance mandatory. I kept up with my readings, made my own notes and still managed a B+ in his class.
His a super teacher. very interesting and this will drag you to class, but that does not mean he gives easy tests. you must attend all lectures and study very hard for them. additionally final exams are a killer. make sure you memorize the textbook to the best of your abilities.
As is the trend for psychology profs, Paul is excellent. He gives stimulating lectures full of insightful and interesting content that you think about the rest of the day. There is a lot of reading, and his tests are difficult. You will have to work for a good grade, he doesn't give them away.
Best prof I've had! Excellent lecturer with funny, personal stories that help you remember the content.Very clear powerpoint notes, available online before class. Most of what is on the exams is covered in the slides, and he gives you practice written questions and chooses exam questions from these. Would definitely recommend - he's awesome!
He is hilarious and really informative. Just pay attention in class and read the textbook and STUDY and you will be fine.
Professor Wehr is funny, cute and makes the lectures interesting. The textbook is not that hard and combined with the lecture slides if studied properly, you'll be fine. Attending class is important, occasional skips should be fine.
If you are serious & hardworking, I do NOT recommend this instructor at all. Instead of teaching course materials, he takes class' time to promote his own right-wing evolutionary psychology views. So annoying!
He's a down to earth teacher with high expectations for the class. If you put in your time, read the textbook and learn the terms you can get a good grade in the class. I found that not only did I enjoy the class, I also liked him as a person.
He doesn't answer the questions asked in lecture very well but he clarifies everything as much as possible. His slides are orderly & easy to follow (plus he posts them online). If you study the slides and read what he tells you to in the book (mostly the discussion part at the end of the chapter), you're good.Oh and his eyes are really really blue.
Basically he just introduced the material. However the exam requires you to read through the textbook and memorize all the items.
Dr. Wehr is very interesting and his lectures are very clear. He's funny and although some of the material was rather dry, he still tries to make you engaged. I would highly recommend him & his class!
Really bad professor. Reads right off of the slides/doesn't elaborate/explain ideas properly. Basically he introduces topics and terms without helping to understand what is going on. You can do well in this class by reading the textbook and posted slides, but attendance to lectures is not necessary. It seems like he doesn't know the material.
Interesting professor!! He speaks clearly and tries to explain everything as much as he can. Going to his office hours is one of the things I don't regret because he is really helpful!!! He'll try to answer/correct you with any misunderstandings you have. Not attending class=not being able to understand the slides well. His tests aren't easy though
Worst instructor in the psychology department. Vague slides. He only tests on his slides not the textbook. He tries to help but gives vague nonsensical answers to students' questions. I regret taking a course with him.
I don't understand why everyone seems to love this guy. He came off as arrogant and didn't seem to really know his material. His tests don't test your knowledge of the subject matter, but whether you can memorize trivial details or not. Very disappointed with this class.
He's a really funny and engaging professor, and I actually look forward going to his class...BUT the exams...they are ridiculously tricky! The class average for both midterms were pretty low, so I would not recommend taking this course with him unless you are super hardworking and super serious about this course.
Extremely clear with his explanations, and makes the hard textbook a lot easier to understand. He also takes his time to help before and after classes or exams. There is a lot of material and the exams are quite hard, but other than that, I recommend taking this course with him. He is engaging and course itself is generally interesting to learn.
People hating on Prof. Wehr, don't understand the nature of this course. This course requires thinking and the applciation of evolution, not rote memorization. Prof. Wehr does an amazing job of organizing his slides and clarifying details about this new field of EP
He has an authoritarian way of conducting this course: you are expected to memorize his slides word by word ~80% of which are in fact his outdated personal beliefs. Didn't find him intelligent and inspiring at all. My previous classes were all so open and interactive, but this class was just awful!
Dr. Wehr is the BEST! He really works hard for his students. Really patient and can explain complex (and controversial) topics really clearly. Going to his office hours helps, so go!
I have so much RESPECT for his prof! I was skeptical about the course at first, but by the end, he changed my perspective completely. Can't say that about too many other instructors. I'd take this course again.
Such an amazing and engaging professor!! In my opinion, he talked clearly and tried to emphasized on important details. Especially those that are hard to understand. However, his exams are pretty challenging. Make sure to not only memorize, but fully understand the material. One of the best professor I've had so far
A great teacher that does actually care about what he's teaching and finds a way to make it really funny and enjoyable for the students as well. He was very helpful when I asked him advice about the different types of Psych classes as well.
Very kind man. He is funny and nice and takes an interest in his students. His exams can be tricky but they are not unfair. Hi lectures were engaging.
This was Prof Wehr's first time teaching this class, and he made the boring material less excruciating to learn! He's a really nice guy, and tries to make his lectures as clear as possible. Super helpful and wants to see his students succeed. The material is dry, but I really appreciated his teaching style in helping everyone learn it. Recommended!
Great Prof. Genuinely cares about student learning and made a boring subject interesting. Also just a pretty cool guy.
AMAZING prof! Keep in mind that the PSYC department requires all PSYC classes to have averages in the 60's, so if his exams weren't hard you'd be scaled down anyways. His tests are manageable if you focus on the slides and read the afterthoughts section in the textbook. Amazing lectures, go to them. Ask questions, he genuinely wants you to do well!
Paul is the best prof! He really patient and caring about his students. He helps his students whenever they need.
He's an incredibly dedicated, incredibly hardworking, interesting professor. He is clearly interested in the subject, and clearly cares about aiding students if they attend classes and ask him for extra aid. The class is not a walk in the park, but if you work, you'll do great! Go Paul!
no complaints
Fantastic psych prof!! Interesting lectures. Left the class almost entirely sure of becoming a psych major.
Dr Wehr is hands down the best professor I have had. Not only did he guide me very well, but he also became a good friend of mine. Take a course with him, he cares about his students, and takes the time to memorize your name and always has time for you.
If you know the slides and take good textbook notes you will get an A. The "opinions" that other people are worked up about are backed up by logic and peer-reviewed evidence so there's that. If you disagree with one of his "opinions" it would be a good idea to have evidence to back up your antagonistic "opinion."
Awesome prof! Hands down one of the best profs I have ever had at UBC .. 5th year student. Must take class, cannot stress enough. first class seems a little dull with all the Darwinian stuff but trust me it gets interesting, and its all logic based after a while. Cannot go wrong! :) Also I found him hilarious, great sense of humor.
Took two courses with him at UBC, both times I didn't do as well as I thought. First time (PSYC 208) I admit I didn't attend as many lectures or pay as much attention as I should, but the second time (PSYC 358) I changed all those things and still did bad. Maybe it's just me. I actually learnt a lot from him though and he's really interesting.
I still miss this being in this class and it''s been a year since it ended. Best prof I''ve ever had. Super approachable friendly and genuinely cares about his students. The material is fascinating and he is open to explaining it again if he feels like he wasn''t clear enough. LOVE HIM.
Hands down, the best prof I've had (so far).. Hilarious guy, keeps the class involved; the only class I don't have the urge to fall asleep in. Highly recommended that you take a course with Wehr. Just a note: the only way to do well on the tests is to READ THE TEXTBOOK.
Amazing prof!! Very engaging and keeps you interested throughout the whole lecture. However you have to make sure you do all the readings for the exam.
I had him last year. Not good. Not clear. He was not open-minded. Also tests were hard. Overall, I found him very arrogant and confrontational. I received an average grade in this course.
Terrible lecturer. I retook PSYC 100 with a different instructor this term and had a totally different experience. I wish I had never taken a course with him. He lowered my GPA. I agree with people who say he is arrogant and doesn't know the material. He did not provide any help at all. UBC tuition is so high so they should hire intelligent profs.
Best prof everrrrrr
Wehr is a really bad prof. He teaches psychobabble not psychology, His jokes are really lame and inappropriate. Even people on FB are talking about his jokes; just Google him. You are expected to memorize useless charts for exams. I didn't learn a thing after passing this course. In my 3rd year at UBC and Wehr is the worst prof I've had so far.
He's really chill and fair. He knows what he's talking about and is willing to help.
Charming and easy-going. Often receives playful messages from students. He gives many examples and explain things well. His section has the heaviest course load and hardest tests amongst all. Attend lectures, do the readings and make good notes. Lots of memorizing work. You NEED to UNDERSTAND the material to get high marks. Overall I like it a lot.
Doctor Wehr is a great evolutionary psychologist who, beside research, has served a critical advising role in the psychology department as well as contributed to The Men's Rights Club of UBC. He is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. My afterclass discussions with this Prof and his evolutionary views deepened my passion for the MRA movement
I took this class awhile back (around 2014) and he was literally the best prof I ever had at UBC. I really hope he comes back to UBC. Although I took it for fun as credit, he's lectures inspired me to major in psychology. Most friendly, clear, and perfect prof ever. He remembered my name among hundreds of people which was pretty cool.
I took this class a while back as a business major. He does not use the textbook. If you want to pass, you just have to memorize his shallow lecture notes. He is somewhat arrogant and also he makes the course difficult by including a lot of evopsyc content completely irrelevant to this introductory psyc class. Complete waste of money and time.
He was rarely available to answer questions outside of class hours, and did not answer emails. His powerpoints were useless and unclear. He is not very intelligent and doesn't understand statistics. I borrowed a stats text from the library and taught myself, otherwise I wouldn't have passed. Such an unhelpful lecturer.
Paul Wehr made me hate psychology.
Unclear grading criteria and absolutely no leniency. Tests are 15 minutes in length for 2 essay questions and expects you to be incredibly articulate and detailed. He's one of those 2+24 not 3+14
