The girls all said he was hot or something of the sort, i just thought he was a great teacher. skeptical going into class because i thought philosphy was all stoner b.s., but his class was very clear, concise and he was very helpful in understanding key terms. one of the textbooks, "a splinter in your mind" was great. great teacher.
He is a little spastic but a great teacher. Very knowledgable in his subject.
everything was kickass
He is such an amazing teacher! He explains things very clearly and is able to make the subject extremely interesting. I was dreading taking philosophy, but if I had taken his class two years ago I may have majored in it, cause now I love it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this professor!
very good teacher, but like all philosophy classes, it requires really deep thinking...expect to get a B from Prof. Wilson
Dude...he is hot. I think its the veggie diet, and prolly a little neurosis that keeps him looking good. But as a class it does require a good amount of work, go to class take notes and read...the usual. The matrix book was interesting but the other one literally put me to sleep. Nice guy and a good teacher overall.
Yea he's hot. And his class isn't that hard. He gives you the test questions for both tests at the beginning of the semester. They're essay tests but not that hard.
awesome.
Cool guy. Class is relatively hard but if you do the extra credit, he'll push your grade over the top. I had like an 84 and with extra credit, he gave me an A. Good professor.
Awesome teacher! Incourages discussion with the class and is very good and explaining complicated concepts.
For an intro philosophy class, it was pretty interesting. He focuses on the metaphysical aspects of philosophy. Tests are essay, but you get the questions ahead of time. He teaches this class based on the Matrix Trilogy...kinda geeky but what more do you want from PHIL 1305? Very easy, all you have to do is think. He's ok looking, but not hot.
NOT A FUN OE EVEN INTERESTING CLASS UNLESS A PHILOSOPHY MAJOR.
Doesn't use the Matrix books any more but still a great professor. He's dorky in a cute way & goes off on funny tangents. He knows his stuff & makes it interesting & really likes student comments. Makes you think outside the box & made me like philosophy when I used to hate it. TAKE HIM- 1 textbook vs. ~5 w/ other profs. Essay exams & MC final!
Not a very good professor...the majority of the information I learned for the tests I taught myself from the book. It sucks when you study for a test and none of your notes are relevant or detailed enough to understand the terms. Ask him questions in class and he gives you a completely off the wall answer, that makes you more confused...
he's a good teacher, he just gets pissed off when people don't think before they ask. study and you should atleast get a B. it takes work for the tests, but the class gets interesting especially if you can keep discussions going and not just sit there expecting to get something out of the class.
He makes it interesting and is a fair grader. Plus he's kinda cute so you'll actually want to go.
He is a good professor. I thought the Matrix book was probably the dorkiest thing ever. You have to take notes though and it should be a super easy A
Interesting Class, great prof. gives oppurtunity for bonus points and retakes or make-ups. Gives essay test but grades fairly.
hands down...great prof
He was a really interesting teacher, and you have essay tests. You aren't required to go to class, but if you don't, good luck reading and understanding your philosophy book!
He's a cool and funny guy, but his class is just boring. The essays are kind of hard but as long as you study, it's no biggie.
Paul is a great teacher I had him for the first summer session and it was good. Although you might disagree with some of the topics the lectures were interesting. He gives you 3essay exams and 1m.c quiz and the final is m.c. He even offers a make up quiz. I would suggest him to anyone.
Overall he led an interesting class. Unfortunately, he can get easily off subject when in a discussion. I recommend taking his class because as long as you put forth a little effort you'll get at least a B.
God what a bore! I thought this would be interesting, but he doesn't know how to get discussions going and seems to prefer hearing himself talk. Tells you in advance every attempt at humor will be bad, so of course it is. Grading pretty fair, but no longer gives real extra credit opportunities, so if you goof up somewhere, you are out of luck.
Not as bad as the last 2 say. Can get boring though. 90% of the class gets As. Interesting topics, don't be afraid to ask questions and make points. Fallacies are the hardest part of the class.
Phil is the one class Ive been postponing. I thought it was going to be extremely boring and hard, but Wilson made it a lot easier. I thought I was gonna fail my midterm writing exam and I ended up making a 85. I made A's on all my papers after barely putting forth effort. If you read and have common sense, u'll do fine. Wilson is laid back, TAKE!
I dreaded the idea of philosophy but had to take it. Prof Wilson is a great teacher and keeps class an entertaining as it can be. Don't need the book so you can save money on that too.
Wilson likes to hear his own voice...a lot. I'm not really his biggest fan, but for a required class, I guess he'll do. Be prepared to work a little harder than you should for a freshman level course.
If you are not interested in philosophy take Wilson. His quizzes are pretty tough, but his essay exams aren't to bad it if remember what he talks about in class. With a decent amount of effort you should get an A or B.
Take him for Philosophy during the summer. You don't really need the book, you should be able to get an A/B.. Seriously
1st time in class i thought ok maybe i will be interested, by the 2nd day i was like really? he is a boring teacher who likes to hear himself talk.when u ask him to explain somethin b/c u dont understand he goes off in a tangent to where u still dont understand!!! take at ur own risk!
He was unhelpful and loved to hear himself talk i highly sugest that you do not take him even if it is your last resort just pick a diffrent class and take it in the summer
Need book and lectures to get an A on exams. His multiple choice tests are harder than the essays in my opinion. I studied A LOT though, and will most likely make an A. Overall, he's pretty easy and laid-back. But he talked down about other disciplines a lot (especially psych, my major) and it gets old from a PHILOSOPHY professor. Also, grades slow
i found prof wilson hard to follow a lot of the time. he seemed to word things a lot more confusingly than he had too. his essays weren't as hard as i expected them to be. the midterm is an essay of one of three questions. you don't know which you will have to write until you sit down to write it. i thought i failed the midterm but got an A-...
Overall a great teacher. Helps out whenever. The only difficult things are the quiz. Get/take all notes, & read if you dont understand & you will do fine. Very helpful in the midterm essay & the paper. I thought I failed both, but didnt. Class is not hard, but you seriously have to work for your grade. Awesome teacher!!
Interesting class, overall good prof. The quizzes and essays are a bit tough--but study and ask a lot of questions and you'll do ok. Really the only negative thing is that he's always out of chalk and he makes gross nasal sounds a lot. He knows his stuff and loves discussions. Good class but don't take it right around lunch.
Overall good professor, but the worse part of the class is the midterm. It's an in-class essay, 4 pages minimum in 80min, over confusing topics...not reccomended, but I think I will pass with a B.
Not too difficult of a class. He gets on tangents about things that sometimes have no relevance to the course. The last 50 percent of your grade is a 50 question final and a paper (due in the last two weeks of the semester being over). He does give you a make-up quiz on the day of the final to potentially boost your grade.
If your looking for an easy A, this is not the class. Almost all other philosophy classes at Texas State have easy tests and quizzes and average an A in the class. 60% of your grade in this class is a midterm and an essay that are extremely difficult.... My advice, choice a different prof.
He's a pretty straight forward prof, if you're even the slightest bit aware of basic philosophy. His rating shouldn't be this low, it's probably because if freshman who don't know what college is like. If you read the book and study even a little you'll do fine. I rarely went to class and still got an A just from reading.
I loved his class. At first it was difficult to follow his notes, but I got the hang of it quickly. Just know the class notes, I never bought the book. Grades pretty easy on the tests, anyone who got a bad grade clearly didn't study the right stuff. The guy next to me came to class maybe 4 times and still passed. Just study the class notes!!!
First time Wilson has taught Ancient Philosophy 2311 (phil before 1600). I stopped going to class because I can't understand anything he rambles about (& not mandatory)..I googled & researched the hell out of the topics for the essays & presentations & have managed an A. Don't count on him, this class is 100% your effort. Would NOT recommend him.
I went in thinking this would be an intersting, intellectually stimulating class. WRONG! Wilson is pitiful as a lecturer, shows no passion for his subject or teaching and is really unhelpful when people have questions! whatever your interest level in the subject is, avoid this guy
Mr. Wilson is a horrible teacher compared to previous and current teachers, I have had. He likes to teach from memory with no powerpoints. He does not clarify on his words. I was totally loss with 75% of the class. There were a few students who were eye to eye with him, but other wise not a good teacher to learn from. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
His class was not easy, but if you study really hard when it counts, you can make an A. I'm not an A student, and I pulled one out of his class.
One of the worst professors I have ever taken he missed so much class do to personal things we never had time to learn anything. The final was especially difficult because a lot of the material he had never taught. You don't really hear about philosophy just things about him and what's going on in his life.Don't take him.
He definitely gave me a much better grade than I earned, which helped me A LOT. He had something going on in his personal life but did not let it negatively impact his students aside from being a little late.
Paul is an awesome professor. He is very literal and hilarious. The quizzes are really hard in his class, but if you study your ass off for the essay exams, he will be a nice grader. If you ask for extra credit opportunities, he helps to provide them. I would definitely recommend taking this class, he really knows what he is talking about.
Wilson was a good professor. Not sure what all the problems are with him. Attendance was not required. I would recommend taking this class if you have strong writing skills, and are ok with essay exams. He gives you the exam questions before hand. I believe there were maybe 5 questions to study for, and you randomly receive two or three of them.
Not terribly organized but it didn't really impact the coursework a whole lot; resulted mostly in deadline extensions for papers. This is what a college class should be. Professor expects you to read the text but I found that reading was actually very rewarding because participating in class discussion was never dull. Would definitely take again!
It was a really straightforward class. Everything was to the point. One or two papers but not that hard to complete. He picked some pretty good movies for us to watch as well. Definitely take it with Wilson. He sometimes took random attendence.
I LOVE professor Wilson. I took him for ethics at ACC, and was SO happy to take him for 3351 at Texas State. His class focused on science fiction, and we watched a lot of movies and short clips to help understand the material. He's funny and attentive, and if he was offering anything else that I needed for credit, I would TOTALLY take him again.
He's a little bit confusing in his lectures but as long as you study on your own you'll be fine. Fallacy quizzes are harder than the essays,
Only professor I've taken more than once (Phil/Lit and Phil/Sport), and both times he was great. Picks good readings for his classes, but more often than not has his own outside materials (videos especially) to use in class anyways. Main grades come from papers, but as long as you show some thought on them you're fine.
Paul is funny. Philosophy is not for everyone but he makes class as fun as he can. Not really any "homework" besides a paper due at end of semester. But if you skip class and don't take notes it will be easy to be lost on test days (4). He is reasonable and will do his best to give you best possible grade granted you don't use your phone in class
I found Paul super entertaining, he made philosophy entertaining. this was a writing intensive class so we had an in class essay for a midterm which was probably the most stressful thing we did because you get three prompts prior to it and he'll randomly assign you with one, other than that if you go to lecture its an easy A
I wouldn't recommend taking Professor Wilson. He teaches from memory so he is all over the place. He loves to talk about himself & will start rambling on about unrelated subjects. He is very passionate about this subject so he expects you to understand everything without explaining. Essays & quizzes are hard & are based off your notes from class.
super unorganized with his teaching which makes lectures very confusing his class isn't as terrible as people act like, he tests over specific things ex. an entire test over fallacies so u only have to study 1 thing. I have an A and barely know anything he's taught us. He's an easy grader on essays if u just write the intro that's a 60.
Mr. Paul seems likes he loves philosophy but isn't very organized and usually doesn't seem excited to answer questions. He is lackluster with information about improving performance in class. He has good memory, but his dependence on using his memory makes his lectures confusing and slow. Very strict class rules, no devices, and you need to show up
Tests are unreasonably hard for what we learn in class. Spent half of every class in the last two weeks watching videos on YouTube and movies. Although these films are intended to help us learn about the ideas of philosophy, we don't often discuss the discrete details of philosophy that are expected for us to know on the exams. Find someone else.
Just take notes in class and you'll be fine. Very few grades in grade book.
long lectures that go all over the place. Can get off topic easily and has few grades.
You must attend lectures to pass, the class only has 5 grades and 2 of them are in class essays that take a ton of preparation. the lectures weren't bad because he's pretty entertaining but they are very scattered. I tried very hard in the class and ended up with an A and was expecting to fail. If he sees you're trying, you will pass.
I do NOT recommend taking this class. He teaches from memory so hes ALL over the place, we watch a lot of YouTube videos that dont seem to make sense and he doesnt even explain them. And he always sighs when someone asks a ?.He loves to talk about himself, I could tell you more about him and his family and friends than I could about Philosophy.
Lectures felt like FOREVER in this class. He rambles a lot and gets upset easily. I didn't learn very much and ultimately memorized everything. Thought I did really well on some essays but he thought otherwise. Tried to read the textbook to study but it wasn't all that useful, wouldn't recommend getting it. Notes in class are best study source.
I really dont understand how this man is a professor. He always seems to come in angry and doesnt really seem to want to be there. Hiis lectures are also super boring. I truly dont recommend him to anyone. STAY AWAY
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I understand because this is our first full semester in a pandemic it is hard for everyone. However, he didn't even THINK about having live class discussions or meetings until 2/3 of the way through the semester when everyone was already failing. His quizzes are over sentence structure more than anything else when it's philosophy.
Has canceled almost every lecture. Was told that it was a professor taught class and now its not the case, the class is having to teach themselves because we never meet with the professor. Gets upset when we ask questions. Do not take this class
Avoid this professor! Hes unorganized, does not care about the success of his students, and there are only 4-5 grades in the book. Has cancelled all but three classes in a span of two months and even ended most of those early. Gets irritated when you ask questions. Rated difficulty a 4 bc he doesnt prepare us. Overall really rude and a MESS.
He canceled nearly every single class, even ones preparing us for quizzes and essays. In the rare chance he holds a live lecture, he is disorganized and confusing. He only has 5 grades and there is no retakes, corrections or extra credit.
Easily the WORST professor I've ever had. Cancels class at least 75% of the time, and still expects you to know everything. Also he made our first quiz due at 11:59am instead of 11:59pm without telling us, causing many missing quizzes. He only has 5 assignments too, so every assignment is worth 20% of your grade.
He is terrible, or at least I had a bad experience. He only talks and talks and goes off on topics other than the actual class topics, he has missed class and those days he sends us his zoom lecture from last year. Also he can be super rude
His teaching strategy is all over the place and I cant understand probably 70% of what hes trying to teach. Almost no assignments except two essays, and you HAVE to read the book because what he teaches doesnt help. He also cancels class half the time, and if it werent for the groupme, I wouldve shown up many times to an empty classroom.
This class was fun to take! not too much work, but the work he gives is easy if you pay attention to lectures and read textbook. the class/material is really interesting.
I took the Asynchronous version of his class and I thought that it was fair. He's very entertaining and a nice guy.
I am taking this class online currently and it’s a drag. The class itself is not too hard, but with this proffesor I literally do not know what he is talking about. His lectures (on yt) are seriously awful he jumps around so much in a slow dull way it’s hard to keep focus on what he’s even talking about! I do not recommend him!
Find a better professor! Wilson was NEVER accessible even during class times (he always had excuses)! His lectures made no sense! I am a straight-A dean's list student and I got a B+ if that tells you anything. In this course, you're completely on your own when it comes to learning the concepts. AND he only assigned 5 assignments, NO EXTRA CREDIT!
He never graded things on time. He is always making up excuses on why he cant grade stuff or why he couldnt do a zoom for a class.
His lectures were all over the place since he did it from memory, leaving my class very confused. Do not speak up in this class, because he makes it seem like a burden when we try to talk. There was no philosophical discussion or debates, as he often rambled on and only talks about himself. He made so many excuses and never graded anything in time!
Topics were very interesting. Just play his lectures on 1.25x or 1.5x speed. Essays are easy to write. Just pay attention to his lectures! Guy keeps it simple which is how philosophy should be.
takes forever to grade and only has 5 assignments for the entire semester.
took this class online and the professor never posted anything for the online class. instructions were never clear and communication was awful. would NOT take again
Only 4 grades for the entire semester. HORRIBLE professor. I was excited to take this originally but there were no debates or anything exciting on his part. He talked nonsense every day and got off topic. Currently is about to be the last day of grading, and he still has not graded 2 off my exams!
Barely any assignments whatsoever, you have to do amazing on each assignment due to there being given one assignment every other week or 2. Lots of lectures considering barely any assignments. Exam prompts are so confusing regarding word count, topics, etc. but he isn't a hard grader on exams.
Not many assignments so every grade matters. Gives make up quizzes with the same questions. Not proctored. Prompts are a tad confusing but doesn't grade hard whatsoever. The people complaining about difficulty just made it hard on themselves. Definitely would take again.
Had an asynchronous class. Didn't know what to do until about half the semester passed. Posted some online materials 2 months after all the classes started. No clear guidance, no clear prompts for exam and no clear grading criteria. Still the good part is there is almost no work. Just the 4 online exams and easy grader. No classes only yt lectures.
Professor Wilson teaches Ethics & Society from perspectives rarely discussed, which I found engaging. His lectures are mostly from memory with no slides, so it's harder to follow. Sometimes he cancels early, but understandable. Quick to reply to emails and willing to help and gives mult opportunities if u do bad on a quiz etc
Very kind and straightforward with short video lectures and papers that assess if you get the general ideas.
