A great teacher, cery cery hard but when you leave his class you know your stuff
No Comments
is so sweet and really wants you to learn but he grades down to the last point
Makes the class much harder than it has to be. Tests are very hard and LONG.
it's all about memorization... there's just a lot of information given at once... it's very hard but teacher explains things very well... it's an interesting class.. you'll complete it knowing a lot of stuff...
What everyone else has said. But he also gives 50 minutes a week of his time to tutor you personally or answer your questions. Take advantage of it!
Exams are very long and difficult. Questions are unclear. Very wierd.
GREAT techer. Clear, helpfull, nice and always fair. Great lectures, fair tests.
If you're going to med school, take this guy. He is very hard. His exams are 3 hours long(yes!): multi choice, practical, fill-in. If you are 1 point short of a C, you get a D. Not easy.
Okay, this is a computer class/speech class and micro class all rolled into one. It is awful awful awful. Don't take him if you want to enjoy the class.
OMG ~ do yourself a favor and don't take this guy if you can help it.
If you are not willing to work hard, don't take his classes. If you are willing, you will come out knowing a lot. As for the people who think he's unnecessarily hard, I would NEVER want you as my nurse or doctor, go work at McDonalds instead.
Class is very challenging, but those willing to work will learn valuable career/life lessons. Expect a quiz each class, exams that will make you think, and an opportunity to learn/fine tune your HTML/PowerPoint/presentation skills.
Paul is an excellent instructor. He brings together multiple disciplines to make a more realistic approach to learning. He can truly be seen as a 'real world' professor.
This guy is amazing when it comes to knowing the material and presenting it to you in a way to make you understand and memorize it.He was so interesting, I often found myself just listening to his lectures all the way thru.
THUMBS DOWN.
This teacher does not mess around. He expects 100% but he gives 100% himself. Exams are EXTREMELY difficult. Very generous in his office hours. Looking for an easy A - move on. Want to excel at science - this is the teacher. Love him. Also cursed him.
It's a love-hate class. You'll love what you learn but you'll hate how hard he pushes you. I may not be an "A" student but I definitely came out knowing a hell of a lot more than I did when I went in!
By far the hardest class I ever had! But one thing is for sure, I think ANY class will seem easy compared to this one. Be prepared to work your butt off and say good-bye to your social life. But in the end it's worth it!
He's ok. Not terrible, not great, just ok. If you have a bubbly personality and laugh at stupid things, he doesn't think it's cute. He's really professional and has a dry sense of humor. His sense of humor is almost not there.
You will only find him funny if you are passing the class. He's not very understanding to those students who are falling behind. Only take this class if you want to learn. I learned a lot of interesting information.
Very good at explaining concepts and helps you memorize anatomical structures. Always has a stoic look (never smiles!),but good sense of humor. Def love/hate prof. Quiz every class, do the extra credit, generous with final grade. Overall: great teacher.
He is the best professor I have ever had
He is a great teacher and is throwing us into the modern world of applying our knowledge to what will eventually be our careers. I now know how to build webpages and powerpoints thanks to him. Kinda hot, nerdy teacher crush thing. BTW if you catch him out
He is hard. Really hard. He pushes you to your limits but he is the best professor I have ever had and I would not want to learn something as important as Anatomy from anyone else
Avoid this teacher at ALL costs!!! Do not listen to the other ratings, I did and I regret it!! Worst science Prof. at SMC
I love this guy! There's so much to learn, but he manages to explain things such that they make sense and are easier to memorize. But make not mistake, he's tough. He expects 110% from his students, but he give 110% too. If you put in the time, you'll enjoy this class.
Get ready to work, cause it's non stop all semester long! Good teacher his non stop assignments actually help understand the material. Sharpens computer skill like no other professor would at this level. Tests are looong! But as long as time and effort are put in, class is managable.
i took biol 2 with him when i 1st came to SMC. i don't know anything about this teacher.anyway, through the course, i think he's a kind and pleasant prof. he teaches very well, clear and interesting.as long as u put in ur efforts, u'll surely get an A
Do yourself a favor, choose ANY other professor!!
I am good at science but this class was so hard. I have never worked so hard for a C (only one on my transcript). The tests are impossible and have lots of trick questions. Not fond of the textbook and WAY TOO MANY busy homework PROJECTS.
he is just awesome
He is by far the best, most involved professor I have had. He is so knowleageable and supportive. Be prepared to study a lot, but it's worth it! He gets behind his students 100%,so don't take the easy way out. With Wissman you'll actually learn!
great anatomy teacher; not-as-great physio teacher. If you have him for both, you'll be hearing a lot of the same lectures. He didn't follow the book with his lectures, so I would wait to purchase it or purchase a different book to use as a resource. Just studying notes may not get you an A. Read.
He is AMAZING peroid! If you're a science student, and you don't like his teaching methods or you are unable to learn from him,ADVICE:Get OUT of this field,YOU ARE DEFINITELY lost!He can teach a monkey human anatomy. So,if a monkey can learn from him,and you can't,WRONG FIELD!,go learn ART or something
Great professor! Great methods of explaining tough material. His quizzes and group activities actually help you memorize things, and totally help you do better on his tests. Very approachable and willing to explain in detail. Lots of point to earn outside of tests, which help final grade.
Never knew how much I enjoyed Anatomy until I took this class. His teaching methods are terrific and really help you learn the material. I highly recommend him.
He is one of the best teachers out there. If you're looking for the easy way out, you'll have a difficult time in his class. However, if you actually care about learning, then he is like a gift. He is highly intelligent, very supportive, understanding, interesting, and most importantly, he cares!
This guy makes human anatomy more difficult than it needs to be. Takes off points on tests if you misspell a word by one letter. His test questions are unnecessarily tricky. Has very strange extra credit assignments such as sending packages of junk to unkown persons in other countries. I worked my
This professor gets a D+ from me. First C grade I've ever received at SMC and it's making it hard for me to get into Nursing school. Tests are very confusing. If you enjoy working much harder than necessary for a low grade, here's your man!
the class is hard. but if you want to learn anatomy the right way, take it with wissmann. keep up with the material and study. if you cram the night before, you will not get a good grade. if you can't get above a C in this class, i question your ability to be a good nurse. nursing school is tougher!
Without a doubt, the best TEACHER I have ever had! Can take very difficult science subjects & make them EASY to understand--without dumbing them down (I left class knowing the entire Kreb's cycle just from his lecture alone!). One of the more difficult profs, but fair and very helpful & caring!
He's the most difficult and intimidating teacher in the world! I studied at least 15 hours a week and still ended up with a B (my first B in smc)! His tests are incredibly difficult and specific, and some questions aren't even found in the book or lectures. dont take him!!!!!
Paul is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes a difficult topic so easy that there's no way you will every forget it. It's a tough class but if you take good notes and read the book, it should be an easy A. I did very well in his class but did put in my time. I learned so much in his class, and still remember it all.
While I have to admit he is an excellent lecturer, the class environment was stressful and negative. There are 1 to 2 quizzes daily, and the exams are by far the hardest I've ever taken- they are three hours long. Some of the wording and questions on the exams have nothing to do with the book or the lectures.
Professor Wissman's class is amazing. It's a lot of information but he helps you learn it in the classroom. He makes you participate and this means you actually learn the material. It's hard work, but it's straight forward.I think the experience was excellent and it made me more interested in science in general.
Some people on this website do NOT know what they're talking about. I thought this teacher was great. Though I do admit that I wanted to drop after the second test, and saw the grade on something that I thought was a good test, i toughed it out and was very satisfied with the results. Take this teacher if you want to learn. pt. 1

This guy thinks he's Mr. Wonderful. Tests are very unfair & tricky. If you misspell a part of the anatomy by one letter, no credit. If your grade is borderline at final exam, too bad. If you like torture from a clown, go for it!
Seem to get pleasure from making subject more diffacult than it need to be. Not fun. Worst science teacher I've had at SMC. Tests are full 3 hours like someone else said. Why?
I was lucky enough to have Professor Wissman two years ago, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had at SMC. If you are serious about entering the Medical field, this is the class to take, you will spend all of your spare time studying, but it is well worth it, this is the equivalent of a Medical School classroom setting. Take this class!
I read everone's comments and registered for and got into his class. It was a horrible experience!!! If I wanted to learn how to do a webpage, I'd have taken a computer class. Do not take him, too much excess info instead of topic at hand.
What a waste of time. He is all over the board with what and how he teaches. This is a good class if you are a webpage designer. I found this to be the WORST class and professor EVER! Be forewarned... you will get nothing out of this class.
I highly recommend although not for slackers, this class is only for seriously motivated students. Exams are difficult and he expects a lot from you. Lectures are excellent but be prepared to do extra work. You may not get an A but if you take his class you will learn a great deal- he has a gift for clearity and breaking down difficult concepts.
If your serious about learning anatomy, Wissman's the professor for you. No slacking in this class, he wants and expects alot, but you'll certainly know your stuff at the end of it.
This teacher is not on your side! He seems to have some issues that have nothing to do with class. While he is a good lecturer, his stuff is recycled - he never writes a new lecture or exam. Go for someone else who understands that you may have more in your life than his class and his enjoyment in pressuring students unnecessarily.
Professor Wissman will grow on you, just give him a chance. The amount of material covered is a lot so you need to be willing to put in the time to study. His tests are based on his notes and the book, so you need to actually READ the book. I really got to enjoy the class as it progressed. The tests are tough, but you've got to work for that A.
Too much unneccesary tension and pressure.
Paul is intimidating but good prof. He's serious and stern, but loosens up at the end and if you talk to him personally. The subject is very difficult, you memorize every free moment you have, especially if you take him during the 6 week session. Quiz everyday, sometimes 2 a day, 3 hr exams w/ 300 questions. Its hard but u learn so much from him.
Can you say NIGHTMARE???????????????? Worst class I have ever taken!
Very nice and approachable. He is very encouraging. This class is not for slackers. He breaks down complicated material so it is easily understood. One of the best professors I have ever taken!
He is AWESOME!!!! He's vey clear and Helpul. We do lots of projects that are very helpul for other classes. This class is definately not for slackers!!! He will leave you an expert in physiology, and you'll LOve it!!! He's been one of my favorite teachers and classes!!!
Great teacher!!!
Worst Proff. at smc. Classes are boring & tense, tests are impossible.. do yourself a favor-avoid this guy!!
Worst Proff. at smc. Classes are boring & tense, tests are impossible.. do yourself a favor-avoid this guy!!
He's good and really very helpful when it comes to memorizing stuff. If you really want to learn, attend his class.
FIRST- For all the Bad reviews, understand this is a difficult class with a LOT of memorization. YOU WANT TO TAKE WISSMAN!! He is very well organized and with your good study habits can easily get a B.YOU MUST STUDY!YOU NEED A PROFESSOR LIKE THIS OR YOU WILL DROWN IN PHYSIOLOGY AND NURSING.Don't take the easy way or you will fail later down the roa
If you really want ot know your stuff take Paul! He is amazing at explaining the material and is very clear. He is always willing to go over things again and gives you his full attention when you see him during his office hours for any questions. There is alot of studying and this class is not for slackers!I think he is the best!
i love his class!!!!!! it's hard and the tests are long, but it's worth it. he's just a great professor and he really wants you to learn. if you are looking or an easy A this is not the class for you, but if u really want to learn he's the right professor for you. just study, study, study!!!!!!!
The best
Amazing experience! Learned SO MUCH! But, I thought tests were VERY HARD. When he tells you that you have to study every free moment you have, I thought he was kidding---but you do. You have two choices, STUDY A LOT OR FAIL! You have to read the book and study his lecture. Study every day. Painful (GPA--i got a C) but rewarding experience.
I took anatomy on winter. He was really helpful when it comes to memorizing stuffs. Just study especially his notes (if u take good notes, ure in good shape) and the histology.
He's a really good teacher! but the subject is hard. But teaches really well and explains the topic to detail. Just that his test are long and hard. I would suggest to take this teacher
He is the worst prof at smc by far!! His tests are FAR harder than they have to be and his style is like a crumby High School teacher. If you take him you will be sorry!!!
The best teacher so far. You will need him later down the road. If you really want to learn, then enroll in his class. Test are really difficult, 3 hours, but you will really learn from him.
Great teacher! I wanted to drop the first day, but I stuck with it and he turned out to be awesome. The tests are long and hard, so you have to study. I learned so much. I wish I could take him for all of my science classes. If you want to learn, Paul is should be your choice.
Very hard and I had to study a lot but I learned a lot. He has a lot of odd class projects that seem kind of childish at first but really help you remember. The tests were long and hard. I got an "A" but I studied my butt off.
Although I hear he is an awsome but tough teacher for anat 1, if you are really interested in the subject and want to learn more in anat2...dont take him. learned hardley anything new, wasted the year making powerpoint presentations and listening to other students present thiers. Other students usually dont know as much so you end up learning less.
I took Anatomy 1 in the winter with Wissmann, and it was a very good class. He is an amazing teacher, very good at explaining things. He really helps you memorize the bones and muscles. His tests are fair: if you take good notes you will be able to do well. Anatomy itself is not an easy subject, but Wissmann makes it doable!!! Take Wissmann!!!
I took his class a while ago but still remember the clarity of his explanations. First impression is that he is a big dry and not very interesting, but he really knows the subject matter. He is definately a challenging instructor, but if you do the work (flashcards, lab) and study, study, study, (he will not hand hold) you will do fine.
A real jackass... Tests are IMPOSSIBLE (3hrs)AVOID him at ALL costs!!! (I wish I had read something like this before I got stuck with his class)
VERY HARD! Very few are passing his class. Tests have three parts each an hour long. Avoid him.
Anatomy is a very hard class itself! This professor isnt very clear on what he expects on his tests. his tests are 3 hours long and doesnt give you enough time at all for each section! he is very boring , i fell asleep during his lectures. He doesnt give you any study guides, and his lectures are disorganized! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
A good professor with a solid command of his subject. At the same time, has difficulties with anger and mistreats his students. You'd be better off finding another good professor.
Honestly, He is hard and challenging Prof. as well as the material. His exams are long, unbalanced, overboard and took not less than 3 hours. A lot of website design and PP presentation is requested. Prepare yourself to study days not hours to get good grade. Quizzes (v. easy), lab, presentations will increase your grade. STUDYYYY and Good luck.
Tough proffesor but at the end it is worth it, he knows the subject and wants you to learn it well, specially for those going into nursing as he says "he doesn't want to feel scare if he ever sees you in the ER when he needs medical attention, tough tests but he gets you prepared, study hard. Great experience. Not recommended if you want it easy.
I have been in the medical field for a while, but I have never had a problem with understanding science material. This man had me wondering if I was crazy. His test are too long, very intense, be prepared to do alot of writing for your test answers. He is a nice guy, not in touch with his different variety of student population.
Avoid this prof. at all costs!!! The tests are 3 hours and impossible!! There is not room here to go into all the reasons why but trust me, you will regret taking ANY class from this guy...
The best professor, kind in nature.smart in the lecture.the 1st instructor who spent a lot of energy in perparing for the class. He brought a lot of stuff from his home to help us to understand the lecture.Who ever do that? and plus his smart ideas to make the students to learn the tough stuff. The healthy class atomosphere,Definately good memory.
very very hard!!!!!!!! If you take him you have to spend every day 5 hours. you have to study from the book word by word to get a B in his class. He is smert but it is not about him is about us students.
Definately a good professor. a modest one. never want his student to address him as 'Professor,Doctor,Mr."as someone urge the students do. he only want to be called paul. smart in lecture.adjusts it according to the student's reaction.unfair comments to the name without a"n" at the end. hope that is another pofessor.
Paul is extremely tough! The Exams are extremely difficult. Lets just say after the 2nd exam of 6 total, 15 people dropped the class. I am an A student who received a C in his class. He is very helpful & thorough. I thought he was a wonderful professor, but if you aren't dedicated to science & the medical field it can be too much of a commitment.
paul uses recycled lectures from his teaching career, although they were well written. he enjoys creating an atmosphere of stress and tension, and gives way too many quizzes and exams. if you like to be unnecessarily stressed out, take him! if you like yourself, take anyone else.
By far the best prof I've ever had at a community college, and probably ever. I think the people who rate him poorly are more angry with themselves for not doing better. It's a challenging course, not a cake walk! I still use the lessons he taught every day in my work as a nurse. Loved the class.
NOT an easy A, if you want an easy grade this is not your class. But if you really want to learn anatomy, you can't do much better than Paul, he'll force you to learn. He wants you to be at or above UC level, and if you get through the class you will be. Has a dry demeanor and humor, but his lectures are very informative and well rounded.
paul is one of the best professors i've had. of course, he is very scary and intimidating the first time you meet him. and he expects a lot out of his students and you need a lot of maturity to be able to take it. but i feel like he gave me a lot more than i put in. and he's a great guy. dont call him professor.
This guy was obviously picked on as a kid. Big chip on his shoulder. I asked him for help and he told me to "try harder." He refuses to have office hours. 40 students dropped this class. He is not helpful. Yes you learn, but you have a heart attack while doing so. Most of the student received a C. Quizzes every class & stress for life.
You will learn A TON in this class, but he is not helpful. His only advice to me and a few others in the class who were struggling was "try harder."His tests cover a lot of info that is not covered in class. For some this might be an easy no brainer class but for the average student who tries/works hard for good grades this is NOT the class for you
He is a good professor but he has authority problems. He needs to realize that some of us really want to learn but we don't want to be treated like middle school students. His class is hard, quizzes every class and 3 hour exams. Don't take him.
A real D--K... Impossible 3 hr. tests... Avoid at ALL costs...
very hard teacher, but very good lectures
Paul is the BEST professor EVER. If you are ready to put in the hard work (esp if you want to go to med school), you will do well. He is actually very nice and helpful, just give him time. I went to UCLA and he is better than any science professor I ever had there...difficulty is about the same.
Paul is a great teacher. I had no science background when I took his class (not even Chem), and did very well in his class because he is such a great lecturer. He is hard - no doubt - but if you study you'll be find. And the topic is interesting.
Paul is great. He may come across as unapproachable, but he's really nice especially if you talk to him outside of class. Give him a chance and you'll learn a lot.
Paul is a terrific teacher if you utake the class seriously and take responsibility for your own achievement. He does not hold your hand! An A is possible, but you must commit 100% to this class and study intensely every day! Ask him what to expect on each test and he will tell you. Bottom line... he cares about students who care!
he is very good teacher but! 60% of his students fail his class. very few get A the rest C. If you take more than one class do not take his class!!!! sorry wissmann but its true
I got a B. Stop whining. Anatomy is going to be hard with whomever you take it.
Don't ever take Paul wissmann for Anatomy1 he covers less than 1/3 of the information on tests. He expects you to memorize the rest of the book. 3 hour test that are impossible. Maybe 4 or 5 people passed the class. No office hours. Helps only his favorite students. Avoid him, thereare much better teachers out there!
Paul is the most wonderful professor that I met during my 10 years of studing to became a doctor of physical therapy. I took his basic and advance anatomy 9 years ago. His classes are hard and he expect a lot, but that what you will face in ANY graduate program related to medicine/health, so you WILL say thanks to him later. Trust me (:>)
absolutely one of the best teachers i have had in nine years in college. if you put in the work you will gain so much from his course. He s extremely mastered and dedicated to the subject and has a very clear, effective and creative teaching style. yes, only about 13 out of 40 students made it thru to the end, but the rest were not ready to learn.
A previous post read "His classes are hard and he expect a lot, but that what you will face in ANY graduate program" THATS THE PROBLEM!! He thinks its a graduate program. Tests are 3 hours, unfair and impossible! AVOID at ALL costs!!! Trust me- I am about to graduate nursing school and he is by far the worst teacher I have ever had!!!
Paul is a great teacher. He will push you to do the work and get a lot out of you. If you can survive the first 2 test you will be alright! One of the best teachers I have ever had!
No matter what grade you received, everyone's just gotta admit... he's an excellent teacher! He knows what he's talking about. He cares. The knowledge you gain in the class sticks with you. Yes, it is a hard class. Get ready to memorize, memorize, and memorize. Other than that, he was the one of the best professor I ever had so far!
He's VERY difficult, but you'll learn quite a bit from him. He doesn't give you much time to mess around in his class so be prepared to hit-the-ground-running at the beginning. His tests could be a little ambiguous. That textbook will be your entire life for that term. UCLA caliber instructor with the same difficulty to match. GREAT INSTRUCTOR!
I took Anat 1 from Paul in the Spring of 08 right before I transferred into a BSN program at a university. The amount of info & the extent of material we were expected to know has made a HUGE difference in my understanding of all the science courses I have taken since then. Physio and Micro were cake compared to that semester. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND
I cannot understand all the positive comments. His tests are 3 hours long, impossible, and unfair. He is by far the worst prof. I have ever had. The only accurate comments I have read are memorize, memorize, memorize. There is no thinking required at all. Just memorize. Avoid at all costs.
extremely rediculous and unfair. He'll teach something and come up with something completely diferent on the test. He expects you to read the whole book basically. Please just take another teacher thats more helpful and understanding.
Difficult exams. No extra credit.Don't waste your time and don't lower your GPA with him!!!
Paul is an amazing teacher for those who are serious and willing to put the work in. Took him for Physio this Fall, and he may very well be the best teacher/prof I've had in my entire life. I studied quite a bit, and ended up coming out with an A, I learned many new skills which I was told will be helpful in Grad School. I will remember him always.
Award winning teacher--too bad the award is "Worst Teacher I've Ever Had." A real jerk from day one. Lectures r clear and helpful; too bad he's so lazy. Requires students to present lectures so he won't have to. Spent 1 whole day showing "Super-size Me." Never in office. Unfair. Rude. Mumbles. Seems to hate teaching. He should quit the profession.
Extremely difficult class. He expects you to be a grown up and study. He is a difficult professor but I think all of the negative comments are from students who got bad grades because they didn't put in the time. This class will require a lot of studying. Memorize everything and you will get an A, don't and you will get the grade you deserve.
He's an amazing professor! If you really want to learn, take him! Don't listen to the people who gave him bad ratings! His class is all about how much work you're willing to do bc he does a great job of teaching the material! I leave class knowing what I need to know. BUT you DO have to put ALOT of time in to studying it all to do well!
If u have low self esteem & enjoy verbal abuse in the form of demeaning, arrogant, condescending, sarcastic, rude & authoritarian comments, this is the class for u. He will also treat u like a 2 year old. If u know a student who thinks he is a good teacher, ask them about his treatment of the students. He is good at teaching if u ignore abuse.
Paul is sarcastic and ingenious. I took this class twice. 1 Year full of Paul. Notes are serious. TAKE GREAT NOTES. Study for 4 hour intervals outside of class, everyday or when you don't have anatomy. Outline your chapters. Dissect your notes, and study in parts, relate to book. Ask questionsX100
When I took Anatomy with Paul, I was scared to death. I have never worked so hard for a class in my life and the pay off was amazing. He is actually quite nice and approachable, even though during class he is intimidating. Lazy people look elsewhere. Best Prof, and I took him again for physio. Can't recommend him enough, but it isn't a cake wal
The material isn't very hard, though your success in this class is how well you study it. Paul is VERY smart and an extremly fair teacher. He wants you to know the facts inside and out, not just to memorize. If you are looking to go into the Allied Health field he's for you. Ask questions, go to office hours, though jaded he is very nice and helpful.
This man is so special, there are no words that do him justice. I personally love his dry humor (though it rubs many the wrong way). The class itself is very intense, and no matter how smart you are, hours of study time are absolutely essential. Recommend this class & professor only for those with both the time and passion to devote to it.
If you're going into healthcare take this class your future patience will benefit from your hard work. If you?re a C student w/C effort drop this class or you will get your first F. If you're an A student and work hard you will get your first B. I will never forget Paul he is an amazing instructor. Don't miss class and buy your book. Good Luck!
I absolutely LOVE how Paul teaches. He is the best science professor i've ever had! I failed the first time I took anatomy but that did not stop me from taking the class again with him and I managed to get a B. He can be a little intimidating but when he actually smiles at your work it's the best feeling ever! I definitely recommend him!!!
Paul's a great professor and person, and it often takes students too long to catch on to these facts. His intentions are the best, though he has a strange way of expressing them. He gives you all the tools you need to pass the course and LEARN the material, but you have to tow the line quite a bit, too. I quit smoking after his course. :) thanks!
I took physio last semester, and Paul turned out to be my favorite professor at SMC. He has a very dry sense of humor and seems intimidating, but he really cares about his students. I highly recommend this class to anyone pursuing a BSN. Just read the textbook and take notes and you will get an A.
He talks down to his students because we attend a community college. I was offended by how he would speak to the class, he puts everyone down. He speaks very quietly so it's hard to hear, he will not speak up, he will only have YOU move up. His writing is small and extremely hard to read. Not friendly, not kind, not interested in his students.
Not an easy class, and it shouldn't be. Slow to warm to this professor, but now I hope to get into his physiology class. Take him if you want to learn, but know that studying is necessary. The interest in his students and the support he offered those who got to know him a bit definitely inspired me.
He was just there to give his entire class anxiety and stress. We hardly had time with our human cadavers and we mostly went on field trips and had a pop up final. Don't take unless really interested
If you are looking for a career in the medical field, I highly recommend you take this class. Yes, the material is very difficult, yes you have to devote a large amount of time studying, but hey, it's college, get used to it. Do NOT take him over the summer though. Too much to memorize.
He is slow to warm up to but his dry humor and hatred for reality TV gets funnier after awhile. He is one of the best professors I've ever had. He pushes his students to actually learn the material. He is also very good at clarifying and explaining different topics. Do not take this course unless you are serious about medicine.
GREAT PROFESSOR! THANK YOU VERY MUCH PAUL FOR TEACHING! SO, I STUDIED MAYBE 10-12 HRS A WEEK. I GOT HIGH A. IF YOU STUDY, YOU WILL GET A. PAUL IS VERY HARD BUT YOU WILL LOVE ANATOMY. HE IS AMAZING PROFESSOR!
I just don't know about him. He spends class time acting like a motivational speaker instead of covering the material he expects you to know for his exams. He means well, but unless your background in bioloigy is strong (mine isn't), I say take someone else. It's extremely demoralizing to put so much effort and have so little to show for it.
Lectures, which expand on the textbook (which is a great text!). Follow his guides (on his website!), USE HIS WEBSITE, and study hard. He expects a lot, but he lets you know that from the beginning. One of the most helpful prof's ever, I still remember information months later. Will take him for all of his classes!
You'll either love him or hate him. Paul is a bona fide top-class instructor who cares about his students understanding the material. Out of 30-35 students only 12 remained at the end of the semester. If you can overlook his dry humor/solemness and are serious about learning then Paul is the guy for you. One of the best professors at SMC.
The math: 4 every 3 class minutes, 1 is part of a 3 hour test/daily quiz. He records lectures to ‘not get in more trouble from students complaining.’ Not a clue to change his teaching style, just to cover himself. No lecture handouts, ‘know whole book.’ Never had more condescending/inspiration-killing prof or tense/worse academic experience. AVOID!
Tough tests, lots of material to learn. Books is required, don't ever miss class. We had 7 students out of 35 taking the final. Tries to make jokes sometimes, either the joke is funny or the trying is funny. Extreme dedication to fairness. Ruthlessness at getting students to learn by any legal means. Quizzes are there for learning.
He gives 2 quizzes a day. one quiz at the beginning of class and one at the end. Super rude told so many stents they would end up working at mc donalds. Exams are multiple choice 10qs and essays and fill I the blank
Paul is a great professor. You can tell that he is very passionate about Anatomy. You will have to work really hard for a good grade but listen to his lectures and read (memorize) the book. He has quizzes every class but they are the exact questions on the test. He is an amazing person. Seriously, take him you won't regret it!!!
Took summer section with Paul and all the off-putting , drill sergeant stuff people say about him was in full force from day 1 through drop date. This is a hard class that gets harder in a 6-week session. After separating the men from the boys, Paul really shines as a teacher. He knows how to teach the subject so you'll LEARN it! Very supportive.
Paul is probably one of the most genuine professor's out there. He really does care about your education, he really does care if you succeed in this class. With that said, his class can be tough only if you fall behind on the material or miss class. Also be prepared for quizzes, there's one at least every class session.
This man was by far the worst teacher I've ever had. He shows you material for 10 minutes then quizzes you on it. He gives 7 400 question exams throughout the semester. Literally 80% of the class that I was in dropped. After they dropped he eased up on the work, as if to make his grading workload easier. Shouldn't be teaching at all. Horrible
If you aren't a dedicated student, then do not take Paul, his classes are for students who really want to learn and push themselves. I took his class last spring and it was probably one of the best classes I've ever taken. Definitely a hard one but if you read and study, you will do fine.
He's the best! Granted, you've got to dedicate a lottt of your time to this class if you're serious about going into this field. He knows anatomy well and teaches in a very organized fashion. Do read the book and study hard and you'll be just fine. Hard tests but you can always come to his office hours to ask questions. He's really helpful!
Take him if you want to learn. Freaking hard but worth it. One of the most inspirational professors I have had.
YOU GUYS WILL ALL FAIL THE CLASS!!!!
Paul is an amazing person and just teaches very hard subjects that he wants you to master. Which you will. He is tricky on the tests, but if you follow his notes mostly and his online resources not the book you should pass. It will be a butt kicker but Anatamoy is. He bumped our grades at the end so I wound up with an A, go in for office hours
This class was extremely tough, and you will have to put in a LOT of study time. I honestly loved Paul's class despite that. It's all tough love - he pushes your abilities, and gives you many challenges to really help you grow. (Exams: 1/3identification of parts, 1/3images/slides, 1/3book/website materials. Final is cumulative in histology).
thiis class is hard enough on it's own already and he is making it harder, but yes it's all "tough love"
DO take his class (only) if you are serious and want to do health sciences.I have never had such tough coursework, nor have I had such a great professor. Go to office hours, this man is very pro-student, and has a funny sense of humor! I'm hoping to take physiology with him as he preps you from the beginning for higher level courses.
THE most intense course I've taken. Exams are tough and expect 1-2 quizzes every class. It may not seem like it at first but he's actually really caring and wants the best for his students. Personally, I liked the challenge. I had to dedicate 20+ hours of studying every week. There are easier professors but I'd recommend him if you want to learn.
One of the most difficult classes I have ever taken, but also the most memorable. I really appreciate how he does not sugarcoat the time and effort needed to succeed, not only in his class but also in the field of healthcare. He is tough but with good intention, he truly prepares his students. Make sure you go to his office hours for help!
he's a sweetheart. you need to be an independent learner, read the chpt twice & take notes & memorize lecture notes. 300 test Q's, 2 quizzes per class on what you just learned and years of studying.I dropped bc I slacked off. YOU NEED TO DEDICATE ALL YOUR TIME TO THIS CLASS DO NOT TAKE WITH OTHER HARD CLASSES YOU WILL DIE. but he's so sweet lol
Expect 1-2 quizzes a day, he takes off points for misspelling, no partial credit. Lectures fast so pay attention since he rarely repeats during lecture but explains if you see him later. YOU NEED THE BOOK, he has random book checks. Class is mostly memorization of bone, muscle, nerve names and locations. Study study study. This prof is really hard.
This class is really tough, I changed my nursing major because this class is so discouraging. Usually has 2 quizzes in the beginning & end of class with very little to no time to study before the in-class one. He's picky with spelling and if you don't include a specific word, you get the whole thing wrong. Lectures are fast paced and insufficient
Took this class years ago (also his Biology), which was also kind of difficult but to this day I can name all the bones and muscles and have an above average understanding of my body!! Which is pretty important! Don't ask how I ended up on this site- this class stayed with me, I looked Paul up + was shocked by the mediocre score. Try harder, guys!
Look, he's old school. He really wants you to learn, so he makes you do things like repeat back to him terms he's just lectured about. It's somewhat annoying, but it makes you remember! Exams are 300+ questions, and they are straightforward, but there is just so much material. If you review a little bit every day, you'll be golden. I liked him.
He's passionate about the subject, but goes way overboard with exams. They are often ridiculously long. Every sentence in the text seems to have an exam question, it's just unfair. I know the information well, but do poorly because he compiles too much info for each exam. I study everyday and barely scrape by with C. Choose another professor.
Worst teacher ever . Don't take him unless you are ready to stress out ... His lectures are not even half of whats on the exam. He makes his own notes doesnt follow the book. 300+ questions no hw no e.c expect 2 quizzes every class meeting .. Horrible and makes spelling a big deal. Inconsiderate and tough grader .. Worst teacher for anatomy overall
Paul's class was the hardest class I've ever taken. I took it in the 6 wk summer session & studied every min of every day. He's a kind hearted teacher who cares abt his students & will help you succeed if you try. Follow his rules (no cell phones!) & study the muscle/bone models/comp program in the LRC, & learn to recognize pics of body parts!
STUDY (like 15 hours a week) AND YOU WILL BE FINE. I took 16 units along with chem this semester and managed to pull a C. I for sure would have gotten a B if I studied more for a test I knew I was going to bomb. Just push through it and don't slack off. Anatomy is meant to be tough. Also, be prepared for around 250 question tests lasting 3 hours.
Hes good at teaching but doesnt do enough of it. He thinks his class is the only one students are taking. Test are 3 hours long and around 300 questions. Take him if this is the only class youre taking for the semester. If you do take him spend most of your time studying the figures in the book for the exam.
This class is intense. If you do not attend class, read the textbook, and study A LOT, you will not do well. That being said, Paul is an incredible teacher. The exams are hard because the subject matter is hard. Seriously, just put in the work. If you're not willing to, then you shouldn't take this class. Change your major too while you're at it.
Great professor! The class is difficult but all the anatomy classes are difficult. He really does care about your success. He's a fairly quiet man so he may come across as uncaring. Exams are heavy (5 total), no homework, no midterm, small final. Your grades depend mainly on the exams. In order to pass you need to put in work. DEFINITELY BUY BOOK
Doesn't teach enough of the material (even with a 3 hour class) and requires you to teach yourself with the book a lot. Not the friendliest professor.
Quiz every class, starting second class. Quiz is a projector on a 20Sec timer 1-3 ?'s mult choice/ free write awns: not fast quiz failed. No real ECredit ( join club for a 1 Pt added to your avg.) Very condescending, arrogant and hard to relate too. First quiz was on notes in class mainly chapter 1 nothing from chap 2. Better Anat 1 Prof's at SMC
I got a b on my first exam but most of the class failed. He lectured us on how we weren't trying and that we should switch to Bio2 to prepare ourselves for his class. He never actually tried to teach us until we learned. He is very cold and it makes it difficult for students to want talk to him. Very hard and not a very good professor.
Paul is a great professor in that he teaches his students to be independent learners. Read the book. A lot. Study. A lot. Tons of quizzes, but they aren't too difficult if you study consistently. You cannot pass by just showing up. Paul is quiet but very approachable. He will treat you very kindly if you show initiative.
He gives quizzes in the beginning and the end of class. During lecture, he just throws everything at you, then he quizzed at the end. HE LECTURES FAST. What got to me the most is that every single bone, nerve, muscle, cell, etc. EVERYTHING has to be spelled correctly on quiz/test or you fail.
Everything you read is true, but he is an amazing professor, he does have a sarcastic sense of humor so be weary. Read the book it will prepare you for the exam. His lectures are extremely detailed and the exams take the whole class, but they will prepare you for your medical career.
Paul is so inspiring, his lectures are very detailed but his class is no joke! I took this class in 6 weeks and had absolutely no life. I literally lived & breathed Anatomy. He has 1-2 quizzes every day and expects you to read every little thing in the book. Exams are intense, but he's very intelligent and is so sweet if you get to know him!
Be ready to be independent learner for the most difficult subject.
Worst teaher ever. He threatens us multiple times during class and lies constantly. No trust at all. Does not teach any physiology whatsoever. Students are literally expected to teach each other on hard topics. "explain IP3/DAG and cAMP pathway". Gives daily quizzes but no answer sheet so we can't check wrong answers. "it's all in the book"
This was the worst class I have ever taken in my whole life. I get that he is not accustomed to teaching online solely, but accusing and using scare tactics is not professional. He didnt really teach much and was incredibly confusing. Constantly talked down to the students. If Covid is still going dont take his class.
Paul was by far one of the worst professors I have had at SMC. From the condescending tone, the lack of compassion for students, lack of technological adaptability with Covid-19, has made his class to say the least, horrible. Springs loads of info one class period before an exam, and never let us know our grade. Probably to have a few people left.
Considering covid he was a horrible professor was very condescending and sarcastic throughout the lecture. Says he hates technology but doesn't give you a syllabus but instead a class website which is confusing. So much reading and terms per chapter, and he will pile on 4 to 5 chapters in each test which amounts to about 100+ questions per test.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF ITS ONLINE! I took his class because I had read some good reviews prior to adding it. I can see how those reviews would probably be accurate if one were to take his class in person, he's a cool guy and I can tell he's trying to make his lectures interesting, but man, he really needs to update his technological skills.
I feel good that I'm not the only one to say that this is the worst instructor I've ever had and I already have 2 college degrees so I've seen a lot. To reiterate, extremely condescending (not sure if he would be this way in person but who knows) constantly belittling students and deflecting questions. Take any other option, couldn't be worse!!
I took Paul's anatomy class twice (failed the first time) and physiology class. My advice for succeeding in his class would be to go to office hours regularly, write down everything he says during lecture, rewrite your notes immediately after lecture, take detailed notes on the textbook, make study guides, and read everything 3x times before exam.
I definitely should have taken Bio before this class so that's my fault there but WOW. He is extremely condescending, does not want to adapt to the technology needed for communication or grading, DOES NOT record his lectures for online COVID classes, gave us a slightly janky website to refer to, and just overall does not make it easy to learn. /:
worst professor ive even had. not exaggerating. he uses some crappy home website. he loves purposely tricking students. does NOT answer questions if you ask them. he does NOT conduct office hours. he is utterly useless and is extremely rude and difficult to be around. be prepared to learn EVERYTHING ALONE or with classmates
The class isn't terribly difficult if you're good with memorization. It is quiz and textbook heavy. However, he absolutely HATES technology such that I wasn't even able to use my iPad to take notes. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOUR MAIN LEARNING TOOL IS AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE! Be prepared to use old fashion notebook and writing utensil. It's 2021, Paul!
He IS tough but explains concepts in a very tangible way. Exams are mostly based on lecture, he very accessible outside of class. He does want the best for his students, show up to office hours and come to class prepared for that day's lecture.
He makes the class feel more difficult then it is. Be ready for pop quizzes everyday and the tests are extremely hard. Be ready to memorize lots of things. The final test is cumulative, so be ready to go over the entire book again. Grades arent posted on canvas, you are supposed to figure it out on your own.
Extremely difficult class, Paul makes the class rather difficult then it should be. Gives out parts to memorize 2 days before the exam. Started the class with 30 students ending with 12. Also theres only 1 extra credit assignment which is worth 1 point. Good luck if youre planning to take this class
In my 3 years of being in SMC, I have never met a professor this hard. Exams are extremely difficult unless you remember everything from the textbook and lecture which is a lot. You wont know your grade until the last day. Make sure to take notes and remember to check your email. Came to class once when he emailed last minute with class is cancel
Was failing his class half way through semester. On my test paper he wrote meet me after class. When I met him, he gave me multiple extra credit opportunities saying no one should know. As far as the class goes, its absolutely difficult. Doesnt post grades and no technology. Has a crappy website for students to use.
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE BUT HIM. He literally tricks students on the exam with made up words on. Everything on the exam is to trick you. Make sure to study at least 5 times a day memorizing everything . Extra credit is .05% difference so be aware. Labs are super fun tho!
Missed one day of class and emailed him saying I was sick. He replied saying when theres a will theres a way and I was like what. After our second exam which I received a 30%, the next class he stopped me at the door and said he dropped me out because he thought this class wasnt right for me. Who is he to decide?
Anatomy is hard but Paul just seasons it and makes it more harder. When studying for a test study the whole chapter even if you didnt go over in class puts lots of surprise questions Im exam and expects people to fail. First day of class and hell tell you half of you will fail, which is true because he cant teach. Good luck future students
Bro school ended but this dude still hasnt posted any graders up. On the day of the last class, he cancelled class. No reason or nothing was in the email. Emailed him what my grade is and still hasnt replied. Other reviews on him on here are super accurate about him not knowing how to teach, and whatever u learn in class is doesnt apply on Tests
I took paul for both anatomy and im currently in his physiology class, anatomy isn't an easy subject, and if you want to be the slightest bit successful in phys you have to retain the info you learn in anatomy. Paul's classes are not easy by any means, but i remember almost everything from anatomy because of the way he taught it.
Professor Wissmann is one of the best professors I've ever had. I took his physiology class a few years ago at SMC. I'm in nursing school now and I still use my notes from his class!
Read the book and the website daily. Yes, you need to know everything but his traditional style of teaching works! You will NOT forget the material from this class. Summer session was tough, but in the end, the class grew stronger and smarter together. I hope to meet more teachers who are just as caring, challenging, and passionate as Paul.
I recently completed a summer anatomy course with him and I can honestly say I learned a lot in this class. Paul teaches the exact way I like to learn and every day you can confidently say you learned something in his lecture. This course was definitely challenging but rewarding. He's very approachable and eager to answer any questions. 10/10.
Took him for the spring semester and it was a tough class. We had 45 students at the beginning and ended the semester with 14. Every class there is a quiz or a pop-up quiz. He has his own website so you won't know your grade until the very last day or unless you email him of course. His funny and all but his class is ridiculously hard
If his classes are offered online, then don't even bother. Even when I took this dude in person I still struggled to pass with a C. Doesn't use canvas, instead has his own website. My advice read the book and look at his website. There will be a lot of things you will need to memorize and yeah quizzes are every day.
Professor paul is an amazing professor. took him for anatomy and physiology and got A+. He is caring and his lectures are easy to follow. Other reviews said test heavy but that's not true. you only get 2 exams, both are extremely easy. Quizes are easy. You get many extra credits so don't worry if you mess up on an exam or quiz! highly recommended.
Paul is one of the best Anatomy professors out there. He does allow computers/ipads to take notes in his class. He also curves the final exam and gives out extra credit. His funny and his lectures are very interesting. Lots to learn in his class!
Technology is prohibited in class. Goes off tangent in lectures too many times on too many stories that nobody cares about. I actually regret taking this professor because he makes your life unreasonably difficult for 15 hours a week (during the summer). Take another professor for an easier time. Beware.
If you are someone that's good at memorizing and will study for 2-3 hrs a day, go ahead and take it. This is by no means an easy class. The professor wants you to participate during class, quiz every class on previous lectures, and no homework. Take good notes in class. You can pass, but if there is a different professor take them instead.
Someone giving a false narrative of this class continuously. No tech, not allowed in many health science classes anyway. This is not an easy class at all. 80% test and 20% other. Pop Quizzes and lectures off a tangent. He is nice but not helpful and the website he uses is personal and assignments must be excel compatible. Grades - self calculated.
Pauls lectures were engaging & interactive, he is passionate about anatomy. Paul is happy to help you with any questions you may have. You HAVE to put in the hours of studying, take his practice quizzes and use the website he created. Anatomy is hard in general there is a lot to grasp. Use quizlet/flashcards, rewrite your notes & draw.
Paul is one of the most challenging professors I've taken. Tons of pop quizzes (tells us beforehand usually) and most of the test material is off his website PDFs. Got an A by putting in 3-5 hrs of studying every day and REALLY FOCUSING on his website PDF's that he provides for free. Rec taking him if you want to really know physiology in and out!
Best anatomist to live on planet earth. Great lectures, only homework is to study, really cares for students, wants to see you succeed. Don't underestimate Paul, he's awesome. Study for your life to pass exams/quizzes, don't dislike him if you fail them. It's your fault for the F. Loved being in his class. He tells great stories.
This class is hard. Quizzes are every session and fairly easy. We took them multiple times in a day to drill the information in but the exams are heavy. Be ready to take 150 questions based on his lecture, the book, and whatever extra stuff on his outdated website. Also no tech in his class whatsoever. He goes on tangents and will belittle you.
Terrible prof, would not recommend to anyone. Doesn't use online tools, expects you to learn alone, toughest grader ever, no leeway, no extra credit, does not care about the student's success. Please take anyone else.
Absolute joy of a professor! Focus on his website and use his textbook guide and lectures as a reference. Don't be shy and be social, making friends with your classmates and Paul makes class more fun and casual. And sure to attend his office hours too, he's always happy to help and opens up more if you talk to him often
Extremely condescending. Treats the class like we're there for his entertainment. Intentionally gives incomplete or misleading info in class to trick people who don't remember every detail from the book. I truly don't understand why this man has a teaching job.
Professor Wissmann's ANA1 class is challenging but engaging. While his teaching style may not suit everyone, putting in the effort pays off. Unstuck study and other study aids can be helpful for preparing. Overall, a rewarding course for dedicated students.
No technology in class if he sees it you're losing exam points. He's extremely knowledgeable and a great teacher, but he isn't very personable and doesn't care for excuses as to late work or showing up late. Use his website, the textbook, and the LRC models. Misspelling means the whole answer is wrong. Group studying for me was a must. Good luck!
Have you ever wondered what it'd be like if Seinfeld hated you? I genuinely contemplated bringing a stopwatch so I could measure how much time he spent complaining about us, to us. When he wasn't doing that, he was going into long rambling stories about his nephews, Pokemon Go, the lore of the pokemon Mew, and how nobody comes to his office hours.
Paul is a great lecturer and really wants his students to succeed. You get out what you put into it! This isn't a class you can succeed at if you coast. You have to study and pay attention but he is always open to answering questions. The quizzes help prepare you for exams and he has creative exercises throughout to help you learn the material.
Oh man ! This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Nonetheless Paul is a great professor. His lectures are great! I definitely learned a lot from this class. Read the book, listen carefully in lectures and don't be afraid to ask questions, and as long as you try in his class you can pass ,don't let the other bad reviews discourage you.
Paul is an amazing lecturer and overall a great professor. He is straight forward from day 1 on what is expected of you. This is NOT an easy class but if you follow his guidance, listen in lecture, read the textbook and most importantly study, you will do well! Beginning of class quizzes and his exams are thoughtfully created and interactive.
Paul's class saved me in medical school. They taught anatomy with 2D ppt "online"! Even though we have access to cadaver dissection, it was nothing close to Paul's approach with 3D material and repetition. I still remember most of the anatomy content to this day. Trust the class and study--spend time at the science lab on models & quiz one another!
Absolutely NOT. Be wary of his grade distribution. Doesn't use canvas. Will demand you take notes by hand but also yell at you for writing when he's talking. Will not move on unless he sees every student verbally responding. Gives you no more than 10 seconds a question on pop quizzes.
Paul is the best teacher I've ever had. I took Anatomy & Phys which pushed me to my limit, but I learned SOOO much. His lectures make difficult topics clear and actually interesting. You MUST put in the hours, but you can get an A once you learn his testing style. Don't overload your schedule—this class needs to be your priority. Go to office hours
