She's not very nice, and goes WAY TOO FAST. Who rated her sexy? That's gro
Terrible teacher. Moves too quickly without clearly explaining what she has done. Very difficult to understand her let alone follow her along while she scribbles all over the board. Just another mediocre professor.
her tests are sooo long, impossible to finish. convoluted exams.

Dr. Bruice acts like ochem is the easiest subject one can take, and it is not. This reflects on her attitude when lecturing. Her recommended study technique is to read everything nine times.
Hard but fair
ochem is hard, and she only likes the students who get A's in her classes
Shes cool
Tough.
she's cool, funny and she brings her dog to class
I like her class and I like the way she teaches and tests. Yeah, it is hard, but if you work hard it will pay off. And, if you take the chance to get to know her she is a very nice person.
entertaining lectures, very fair tests
Bruice's organic chemistry is clear, but there is a decent amount of work involved. The midterms are long, but predictable. There are no tricky questions: if you know the material you will do well.
Not helful! Makes fun of students who don't do well on her tests. Very unapproachable. Unclear lectures, but clear book (she worte it) and tests

liked her book, but she is stuck up and only likes people she thinks are going somewhere in life. thinks ochem is so easy and makes fun of people that don't get it.
She's disrespectful and only pays attention to her groupies. She doesn't listen to students who go to her for help because they aren't doing well, even if they've followed all of her recommendations for succeeding in her class.
Yes, she is not very nice unless you're one of the handful of suckups who think she'll get you into med school (she's the health professions advisor). BUT, go to CLAS, get the old midterms/finals, and you're set. If not, major in psych instead.

The best teacher you'll ever have. Lots of work but it's O-chem what else would you expect.
She knows her material yet her attitude needs a change. She favors her A+ students and blows off everyone else. She is very unapproachable and a terrible health advisor since advisors are supposed to be encouraging and courtious.
She was not "great" as some students say. I had an A, A, and B+ with the B+ with Bruce for my 3rd qtrs of O-Chem...She injects of her feminism by saying why not "son stands" for "daughter strands." For O-chem, Practice on Pap
An awesome teacher. You'll have to work hard, but if you do the work, you'll do well on the test. DO ALL THE PROBLEMS! They'll be on the test. Good if you are trying to get ready for the MCAT.
Tests are pretty damn hard, better do all the hw. Exams have lots of problems. Lectures are basically her writing dozens of examples on board with you racing to copy them. Explains material really fast. Actually one of few good teachers in chem depart.. Can get really ****y though...
ok, here is the real scoop: she is a teacher that expects alot from her students, so if you go to class everyday , do your readings, blah blah blah you will do fine, BUT if your a half lazy **** like me, who waits til the last day, you better taking the other O-Chem prof (you will do much better)
I hate you. I hope you read this web page so you realize how bad of a teacher you are!!! Even with your horrible teaching style, impossible midterms, and absolute disregard for students, i still got a B in your class. HA HA
DON'T TAKE BRUICE! She tries to teach a chapter a day. She moves wayyyyyy to fast. Take any1 else. Bruice sux! She doesn't curve, and doesnt give a**** if the average is an D.
Be prepared to bend over for her midterms if you have't done all the homework. P.S. lubricant would ease the pain.....a little.
This is a hard subject and I don't think you can blame Bruice for the class being hard. It's supposed to be hard. With that said, her midterms are too lengthy, she's a boring lecturer, and she seems to be a bit of an egomaniac.
Sounds to me like the people who rate her poorly do so because they sucked a** in the class. Her teaching style is the best I've seen. She instills the importance of learning the underlying logic of the material so you don't have to memorize a billion things. Highly, highly recommended.
Her book is good, her teaching style is alright, her tests are too long. Went to her office hours once and some premed kooks were kissing her azz the whole time.
She's horrible. If you can take O-chem from someone else, you should do it!
Tests are okay...they are long but no tricky questions. don't really like her...she thinks o-chem is so easy that she expects everyone is able to answer her questions in class. but the fact is that she's been teaching o-chem for decades and it's the first time we learn it
she is such a mean **** who is not nice at all, she is mean.
made material clear
very difficult class, bruice gives you all the imformation, the problem is learning it all. long tests with practically everything from her crappy book on them. take bruice if you want a challenge or dont have a choice.
If you work hard you will do well. If you dickaround, you will fail. Its all up to you and really has little to do with bruice.
Boring lectures and seems like she would rather not be teaching the class.
She was really hard but it was the only class where I felt like I really learned the material!!
Good, no-nonsense professor from which you will learn a LOT! Tests are very fair- in fact, some questions come directly from the practice tests at the end of each chapter in the solutions manual. Holds long office hours and seems genuinely interested in her students. Highly recommended!
Tips.... study the book and the problems she assigns. Also come to class b/c you will know what to focus on. If you take her prepare yourself to take long tests. Passing the final with an A or B+ means passing the class even if you did horribly on her midterms.
Bruice is a good teacher, but extremely hard. Be ready to work ALOT. 109B is probably the hardest class at UCSB. You can get in A in her classes, but you basically have to know her entire O-Chem book, front to back, and who just does that? Just be ready to love, learn, live and die for your o-chem book.
The class requires quite a bit of studying but no, it's not the hardest class at UCSB. It's probably the hardest that a Bio major ever takes so bear in mind they'll all be focused on that class. She's pretty good. Don't piss her off.
Prof Bruise is probably the hardest teacher on campus, she expects you to study ochem all day and night. At the same time she is the best. Go to class, read the sections and do the homework~an hour a day~ this will guarantee an A on any test. DO NOT FALL BEHIND as this will lead to your demise. At the end of the quarter w/ her your brain will swell
Her classes are hard only because she goes through the material like a lightning bolt, and does not dwell on anything longer than 5 minutes..then she moves on. Once you figure her style out, you'll have an easier time taking notes, doing hw, and taking her tests which are very predictable. CLAS is reccomended--it keeps you on track and practicing.
One of the toughest classes ever. Learned alot. Can tackle anything after passing this class.

Dr. Bruice is not a very good teacher. She basically just wants you to memorize everything from the book and not apply the concepts that you should be learning. If you are looking for a class that test you memorization skills then take this one.

Dr. Bruice is both stand-offish and unhelpful. She does not seem to care much about her students, other than the ones who she thinks are smart enough to get into medical school. Everyone else she treats like they have only half-brains. She tells some funny stories and class, but she treats her students like dirt.

Although her teaching isn't great you got her book to fall on. She is very unapproachable and she seems like a snob. I've heard really bad stories about her as the Med school advisors. definately do not go to her if you need a shoulder to cry on or somebody to be nice.
I thought she was the most evil professor ever. I remember talking to her one time when she was talking about increasing the prerequisites for a certain class, and I said, "I guess it's a good thing I already passed that class."
Horrible teacher snobish and unapproachable. Has unrealistic expectations for the class with comments like 'u should know this already' I know we're on the quarter system but her teaching style is pretty fast and unorganized. Dont fall behind! Gave an unfair final with the majority of it being multiple choice, since her past test werent like that.
Bruice goes really fast during her lecture, so stay awake and try to write down everything she said, not just the notes she wrote on the board. Her tests are not tricky, doing the book problems and practice tests from CLAS are extremely helpful. However, be aware of the final. It has a lot of multiple choice problems, which I don't think it is fair
BRUICE IS THE MOST ORGANIZED PROFESSOR. TOTALLY PREPARES YOU FOR UPPER DIVISION. TEST IS TOTALLY PREDICTABLE. NOTHING TRICKY AT ALL. MOST HELFUL PERSON WITH MEDICAL SCHOOL ADVICE. SHE IS MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP YOU IF YOU JUST ASK. HAVE FUN.
My brain hurts and I will be repeating B in the spring with a different prof.
Very unapproachable and discouraging. Got a D and retook class with another professor and got a B+. Too much material to memorize but if you have good study habits and study every day, everything will stick and you will be okay. Not a class to pull an all nighter for...trust me!
took these two classes last year but forgot to rate.. she only favors good-grades-students and is very mean to those who hv difficulties in studying. expects u to write down everything she SAYS AND WRITES in lectures. i remember her asking "which part do u not understand? if i know it how come u dun know (the materials)?" wat a mean woman...
Horrible teacher. She wrote the ochem book that all the teachers use here at ucsb so she expects you to know everything out of it. she really focuses on nomenclature, if you don't know the names of your compounds you won't be able to understand any of her test questions. if you can try not to take her class, any of the other ochemteachers are better
One of the best professors I've ever had. Makes OChem interesting and enjoyable. Great teaching style. Highly recommended.

She can be tough, but as long as you keep up with her in lecture and read her textbook and do all the assigned problems, you can pull off an A. Be prepared to study A LOT. This is not a class you can slack off on. CLAS definitely helps a lot. She brings in her enormous dog, Zues, to lecture once in a while, which I think is pretty neat.
As a freshmen all the sophmores kept warning me about Bruice and o-chem... But i took her anyways as a challenge to myself. In the year that i had Bruice, i really began to question all those who told me she was hard. All you have to do is go to class, LISTEN to her and you will do well, and of course CLAS wouldn't hurt.
Paula Bruice is a great teacher, she explains things well in class. If you listen carefully you can get hints to what will be on the test. Do all the problems in the book and online. She uses her online questions on midterms. GO TO CLAS. clas helps because they give you past exams. SHe recycles her questions.

She wrote the ochem book so u better know it fr front 2back.this class requires u2 study ALOT,keep doing practice prob, memorize reactions.she goes really fast but as long as u understand the book then ur all good since she tests right out of it.she also takes the multiple choice ?s off the online site. Overall not a bad prof, better than Aue!
She is an awesome professor! She explains o-chem better than anyone else I've taken. As soon as she explains something, it makes perfect sence! She brings her huge dog to class sometimes, which is cool.
Out of the three Organic Chem classes I took, she had the most clear and easy to follow class. She is very excited to help with material outside the scope of the class. Not an easy class but the grade reflects ones understanding.
Professor Bruice is very knowledgeable and teaches the material very well. Her exams follow the book and her lectures, so you can't help but not do well on them. As far as the negative comments go on here, they are from students who either did not like the material or were lazy in nature. As long as you follow her direction, you will pass.
Bruice's class is very demanding. If you read and do the homework and understand why that is the answer you should do fine in her class. However if you fall behind in your work good luck trying to do well. You can't cram for her exams and expect to pass. Going to lecture is a must.
Prof Bruice is amazing! she explains everything very clearly. the class in meant to be hard, so you must keep up with the course work. your grade will reflect your knowledge 100%.
If your serious about learning something take Dr. Bruice. Be prepared to put in some time to actually learn something and it will be a rewarding class. She will instill a logic in your mind to really understand Organic Chemistry. Really great teacher.
Organic chemistry is meant to weed people out of majors/medschool/pharmschool/grad school. Thats being said, while 109ABC is study intensive, the material isn't that hard. PYB is a amazing professor and forces understanding over memorization. Since she wrote the book, if you can do/*understand* the problems in the book, you can get a A+'s as I did.
Once again, I am totally dumbfounded by my final grade. I studied for about 13 solid hours and felt that I had at least a C+ on the final, but I still ended up with a C-. Guess that I just didn't make the cut. Oh well...there goes grad school at any good UC. Guess I can go to a CSU somewhere...
Don't need to go to class to get an A. Read the book cuz thats exactly what she goes over in class, since she wrote it. Do as many practice problems as you can. Try to get past years tests. Material isn't that hard, just takes a little bit of effort.
Useless to go to class. Everything she said is on the book. Never took notes or anyting either. Best way study is to do all the practice problem and her old tests and you will be fine
No Comments
she requires you to understand the materials and not just memorizing. you have to understand it conceptially. it's a great class and you'll learn to love it. most people hate her because she's hard but if you know your stuff nothing on her test is hard. do probelms in the book.. read the book it's like your ochem bible =]
OMG! Keep away!! Keep away!!! The book has no structure - and nether does her lecture. Never checks homework and goes through every topic in less than 3 minutes. Is also super mean, and the tests are very predictable - they have EVERYTHING on them.
class based completely on test scores, no curve. tests are not complicated but cover a lot of material. you MUST come to class prepared otherwise you will be lost. bruice moves very fast and you cannot expect to do well from your notes alone. DO NOT allow yourself to fall behind with the reading. know all the assigned problems inside and out!
This class requires a LOT of memorizing... pretty much everything in the book will be on the test (and it's a pretty big book... written by Bruice herself). That said, her tests are very straight forward. No surprises. Her class is very fair.
She is a speed teacher. She doesn't slow down either. Fall behind on you homework and you can kiss a good grade good bye.
By far my hardest class during my sophomore year. Don't fall behind your reading or practice problems, always keep up with the book and do the problems from the book since they are VERY similar to that of her tests. It's not required to go to class since she does half a chapter per lecture, but it's good to just see where she stops.
This class has a lot of material, but it's all fairly easy. If you just do the work, you'll be fine. Go to CLAS study sessions. I went to three before every test, and did very well in this class.
She is cool....read the book and you will be just fine! She literally lectures right out of the book. Word for word. Its kinda funny. Anyway, do the in chapter problems. Memorize, memorize and practice!!
Her high ratings correspond more to her textbook than her actual teaching. I dont think there is a single science textbook out there that is as straightforward as hers. As Long as you keep up with the reading and do practice problems you should do fine. Her tests are very predictable. Only point of going to Class is to find out what not to read
One of the best professors I have had at UCSB. She is very helpful and straightforward. Going to class isn't necessary, but she has a great sense of humor, so it is usually pretty entertaining. Make sure to do all of the reading and practice problems and you'll be golden. She's the best.
She's a straight forward teacher. She goes fast but expects you know what she lectured on which is literally right out of the book, cause she wrote the book. The class is tough but with the effort comes the grade. I suggest signing up for CLAS most definitely. Go to lecture and keep up with the reading. The homework is great practice for her tests
I took her class in 1982 after withdrawing two previous times from different profs (different school). She made the material not only understandable, but enjoyable. My first quarter GPA at UCSB was 1.60. After Paula's class I became motivated, raised my GPA, worked hard and earned my medical degree. I am now medical director of a clinic in LA
Not a great lecturer, but wrote the BEST textbook I have ever used. The class is not that hard if you READ the material and do ALL the in chapter problems. It's a lot of work, but if you do it you will never see anything on the test that you haven't seen before. Tests are extremely fair - your grade completely reflects your effort put in studying.
Learn the entire textbook.
her book is extremely well written so use it. bringing it to class helps
Hardest class Ive taken. She is simply beyond thorough and there is so little time. The book is well written, USE IT. I would even say it should be your primary way of learning (plus CLAS). This course requires hours daily. But in the end, if youve learned it, you feel really proud... But you might be pale from not having left the house in 2 months
Only reason its hard is because there is so much info to know. Stay on top of the reading and problems, go to CLAS, and you should be fine. She basically just reads from the book in class, so the only reason to go is because she sometimes says to skip some parts of the book. Procrastination will obliterate you in this class!
Bruice is one of my favorite teachers. her class definitely requires you to ACTUALLY read and ACTUALLY do the homework. if you do that AND attend class you'll find this class very simple. ALso, she wrote the book so all the practice tests and questions are similar to the actual tests so you know what to expect. LOVE BRUICE!!
This class was very, very hard. I spent more time on this class then my other 3 combined. However, she is very clear on what you need to know (everything), and if you do all the problems its not too hard to get an A. Just be prepared to put in more time to this class then you ever have before
Easiest A i've ever gotten in any chemistry class. seriously, her tests are super-predictable, and she is probably the most helpful professor i have ever encountered during office hours. you will not regret taking her class. just do all the problems in the book, or at least skim them, and you will ace this class.
You will get an A+ in this class if you do all of the assigned book problems. She recycles the book problems and study guide problems as test questions. Do not take notes while in class. Just sit there and listen to her lectures. Skipping lecture can be useful. She takes you out to lunch if you earn an A+. About 10 people in the class got an A+.
For those of you who are pre-med, I was talking to a doctor prior to taking this class and he said Organic Chem does not test how smart you are, it tests how badly you want to go to medical school. This is VERY true. The material is not difficult to comprehend. Expect to do a lot of problems, and put in A LOT of time.
I feel so proud to be done with ochem and to actually have understood most of it. The textbook is the BEST science text I have ever read. It's written in plain everyday language and none of that science jargon. I based my learning off of that, because she just recites from it in class. The problems are sort of fun once you get the hang of it!
Super hard class. It will be you're life. You will live breathe, eat, and sleep ochem, but if you're about the top 10-15 students, she takes you out to lunch! The book is the best book ever written, follow the book, and you will ace her test, and she's really nice!
She is ruthless. If your best friend or a family member dies the day before a final or midterm you must still take the test even if a funeral service conflicts with the exam.
Hands down best professor at UCSB. Very passionate about the subject and it really rubs off on her students.
Could not stand Bruice. She read from the textbook during class, quoting herself (since she wrote the textbook of course) and saying how good she was. She made me hate the O-Chem series and to this day when I think of o-chem, I shudder at the thought of Bruice. She was my least favorite teacher of all time, hands down. To this day, a decade later.
So awesome! She is such a good teacher. Only complaint is that she is really short with you during office hours. Other than that, I could not ask for better!!! Of course you will need to study, so in that sense it is 'hard'. But read the book and you will understand it. Simple as that!
Good professor, really knows the subject (she wrote the book, so she should). She goes through the material very quickly because she expects you to read the textbook. Make sure you do read the book and do the problems. It's the best way to study for the tests.
She needs to go far far away from human civilization
her tests are problems from the book. take the practice test at the end of the chapter in the solution manual. she recycles questions a lot. her lectures go way too fast so read on your own and take clas. go to her office hour if you can ask an intellectual question, if not prepare to get laughed at
Not a great lecturer, but the tests are fair and are from the book. Reading and understanding the book is essential to do well in her classes. Multiple choice on the tests can be found online from the book website. Definitely use clas if you like taking lecture notes
On her syllabus, she tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed in her class. Read the book, take notes in class and from the book, re-read your notes, and do the homework. There are no surprises on her tests and as long as you work at it a little and study, you should be fine.
Took her for 109A and B. Her tests are very long but not too hard if you study enough. This class will be your life if you want it to get a good/decent grade. If you want to get an A or B heres what you need to do: 1. Read her book 2. Read her book 3. Read her book and 4. Know how to do pretty much any problem in it. Her tests are like the book ?s
Very clear teaching, but too fast to learn things in depth from lecture. Very fair grading system, but three midterms and a final in one quarter can be overwhelming. Textbook = class.
Superb class - Only the strong shall survive. Many students complain about the time commitment required for 109ABC, but then again, many students lack a good work ethic and resent having to work hard for their grades. If you are diligent you will find the class to be very interesting & fairly graded. If not - welcome to the real world, kids!
Lectures are difficult to follow. She just rambles on about how red unicorns and green dragons make brown rhinos even though this doesn't make any sense. Also, about how successful her and her dog are. Something about her makes me want to punch her in the face.
To the person below; Maybe if you read the book, then you would understand why she talked about that. But that is really what it comes down to, the book. Paula is... decent at lecturing but her book is the best. If you really want to learn and do well on her tests, you're going to have to read the book, not depend on the professor.
I really liked her personality and feel like she's a good teacher who knows what she's talking about. The book is really helpful, I learned more from the book. You really need to be diligent and constantly keep up with the material. The final is BRUTAL and she doesn't curve.
The only way to do well in this class is to read the book. It's alot of work but if you read the book and do the problems there is no reason you shouldn't do well. Her tests are very fair.
Need to know EVERYTHING in the book to do well. Fair grader. This class requires at least 3 times the amount of studying as most classes, the amount of material covered is insane, although not neccesarily hard. Really cold and rude in office hours, her arrogant personality is what really put me off
Humbleness is a virtue Bruice has yet to learn. Very arrogant woman who is very rude in office hours unless you score really well on her exams in which case she'll love you and treat you like her pet. If not, be prepared to be treated like the dumbest human being on the planet. In order to do well you must memorize the book
One of my best professors at UCSB (and I had to retake 109B!). Despite my failings, she was incredibly accessible, fair, and became a mentor to me - playing a large role in helping me turn a 2.4 GPA into a degree with honors. Her courses aren't easy, but if you study hard and read the book you'll be able to nail 'em. Face it, o-chem's rough!
Don't waste your time going to lecture, just study the textbook for an A in the series.
Not helpful or happy.
No reason at all to go to class. Her slides are pictures of the text she wrote. Questions are straight out of the book, you will never be tested on something you havent seen. It will KILL your time but worth taking her over someone else.
I stopped going to lecture about 3 weeks into the quarter. Her lectures are pointless considering how unreasonably quick she flies through material. And yes, she does seem a bit arrogant right off the bat. Tough class, no doubt. You get what you put in. Read the book and learn to love it. That will be your grade-how well did you understand the book
Extremely difficult class. There's a lot of material covered in too little time, so she lectures fast. She follows the book closely because she wrote it. Do not get behind or it'll be easy to get lost quickly. Attendance is not mandatory, & she records all of her lectures so you can watch them online if you need to. There is no curve.
Lecture is unhelpful if you don't read the book ahead of time. DO BOOK PROBLEMS AND STUDY OLD EXAMS. She reuses questions like no other. CLAS also helps a lot too. She's really condescending in class if you don't know the answers to her questions so I eventually stopped going. Just read the book and go to CLAS and you'll be fine.
I love her!My favorite professor at UCSB. She made me love ochem! She can go through lectures quickly, but she wrote a great book. Just read the book and do all the problems and you'll be fine. She will recycle old test questions and questions from the book so make sure you do book problems! There's no curve, but practicing helped me get an A!
this teacher is ridiculous avoid at all costs, she "covered" 12 chapters for 109C. someone needs to let her know that it's not a race and slow down to really get the material down instead of trying to cover 1.5+ class worth of material.
After one year, I realized that 109B was my only enjoyable quarter. It was the only quarter we didn't have bruice as a teacher. Only because we actually had to learn the material instead of memorizing a bunch of useless crap. This class is definitely meant for bio majors, who are used to doing that stuff. Got an A+ all three quarters nonetheless.
Best professor I've had at UCSB. LOVED HER! People who rate her poorly were probably the students who didn't put effort into her class. She's challenging in the best way possible. Her tests are completely fair and if you study her textbook and understand the concepts in it, you'll do great on her tests. Highly recommend her!
Decent professor -- obsessed with her book so if you read that you will be fine. Bruice made me realize that I no longer wanted to be a chemistry major, but that shouldn't reflect poorly on her. All the exams are reasonable; none of the questions are especially difficult but the quantity is very high.
Excellent professor, but not an easy one. Felt like I learned a ton from this course. Read every page of the first 10 chapters and did all the in text problems and it was reflected in my grade. Very fair, but requires a lot of time. READ THE BOOK
She is a decent lecturer, but the material of the class is hard. Read all of the chapters and do all of the homework assignments on her syllabus. She drops your lowest midterm grade which helps but the class is still pretty hard.
She's a pretty monotone professor, but she wrote the book she uses and follows it to the letter, so treat that book like your Bible, and do ALL of the practice problems. Sign up for CLAS too, that really helped me.
Bruice is a fairly unapproachable professor who does not teach the material so much as recite it. If you have the option please don't take her class.
If you really "need" an A in O-Chem (for Med school) Bruice is the best prof to take for this series, since theoretically everyone can get an A (no bell curve). It requires A LOT of effort before each exam, but her tests are simple if you know the book chapters extremely well. If you put 90-100% effort in the series, you will very likely get an A.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Cares more about her dogs than her students. Reads in her whiny boring voice off a powerpoint the entire lecture. Doesn't teach, rather outlines her book then expects you to memorize every mechanism and amino acid structure in the chapters covered. You'll do well if you spend all your time wrote memorizing
I never went to class because she literally just reads the textbook off of a powerpoint. The class is a lot of work; make sure you do all of the problems in the book and go to CLAS. She pulls all her problems out of the book so make sure you understand them. She says she doesn't curve the class at all but I got a 78% in 109B and a B in the class.
109B is the most difficult class of the 109A-B-C series. However, I never went to a lecture, other than for exams, of course, and still got an A just by doing textbook problems. She is very fair and if you do the bookwork you will do well. No tricks on the exams. But you need to do the work.
Paula is not as bad as ppl say. She covers more material than others, but her tests are easy and require little to no critical thinking. No surprises. Lecture is unnecessary and only helpful if you have read the book. If you don't read the book on time you will fail the course. Her book is the best textbook in any subject.
If you do not want to learn organic chemistry, but want to work really hard for an A (anyone can get an A, no curve), take Bruice. By far the worst professor I have had in terms of actually teaching how to do chemistry; she lectures straight from the book, so use that, and go to CLAS! Again, if you actually want to learn chemistry, do not take her.
Her lectures are not really helpful but since she wrote the book the class is really straightforward, just do the book problems and the exams are pretty much the same as the book problems. But there's little to no curve so you really have to step it up to learn the material (read the book!) and go to clas or something.
For her tests, do all the assigned book problems, and you will see very similar problems from the book on her tests. She will not pull any surprises on you. With that said, do book problems and do not fall behind at all because there is too much information. Going to class is useless unless you read the sections she is teaching about in advance.
She really has it all: family, career, literally wrote the book for the class. Too bad her lecturing is so fast it's difficult to keep up with her during class. Definitely utilize CLAS, and I recommend reading rather than trying to keep up with the ridiculous lectures. Only reason to go is the chance she'll bring her Great Pyrenees dog to class.
If you read the book before the lecture and do all of the end of chapter problems you will easily get an A in this class. If you don't to lecture and just go hard on the book you can still get an A in this class.
Doing book problems make this series completely manageable. Bruice is a very fair test writer. Tests were easier than gen chem tests in my opinion. DO BOOK PROBS.
You can work your a** off in this class, attend every CLAS section, go to every review session & still do poorly. Each test tests every single concept in the chapter, read carefully every sentence in her book. CLAS will be your lifesaver, her lectures are useless, don't go. If she asks for tests back because there was an error in grading, DON'T.
Worst teacher at UCSB. Her lectures are useless because she basically reads her book to you. She does no board work, which is very unusual since this is ochem and they way you learn this subject is practicing writing all the reactions. Midterms are fair, but the final is brutal. Be prepared to memorize the whole textbook in order to do decently.
Oh Bruice, what a rough class this was. You won't learn anything from her lectures. Her midterms are reasonable but her final, in my opinion, was awful (given that I had 4 other finals to worry about) You have to memorize all the mechs in order to perform well in her class. Make the book your bible and thou shall pass.
Her class is rough. Her lectures are honestly so miserable and useless, you are better off not going and instead memorizing every mechanism, synthesis, and the tiniest reaction from her textbook. Oh, and definitely do book problems too and make sure to study the unusual reactions on Mastering Chemistry. Good luck in this class, get ready to work.
Her lectures are confusing and her pace is extremely fast. Her midterms are extremely difficult even though the problems are similar to the ones in her book. Her final is even more difficult than her midterms; it has more mechanisms and conceptual questions than the midterms. Read the book and do book problems. 3 midterms; lowest is dropped.
Easy tests, just read
Bruice's lectures are ridiculous. She flips through slides from her book faster than you can even read what's going on, and sidetracks on personal stories all the time. She does nothing on the board, which is really helpful in O. Chem, especially since the point is to understand mechanisms. To do well, skip her painful lectures and read the book.
Bruice's lectures are boring and you don't have to go to them, but sometimes she goes over things that will be on the tests. You HAVE to read the book and do the book problems! CLAS really helps so take it! Her tests are pretty straight forward and as long as you do the book problems you will be fine. She's really not that bad.
She was my advisor and told me I'd never get into med school. I'm now a senior medical officer at a major health plan and have been voted top doc twice. Those who can't do teach... those who are bitter about it try and dissuade students from their dreams.
Avoid her if you want to learn Ochem, or are taking the MCAT. Bruice offers rigor of the worst sort, rote regurgitation of facts straight from her book. 3 midterms were doable, final was brutal and full of "copy-paste the mechanism you briefly read over on pg 723". If you want to memorize her book and repeat it verbatim on exams, take this class.
Literally easiest OChem classes. Shes super straightforward. You just have to put in the time. Shes stone cold but the best
I commend anyone who has successfully sat through a single Bruice lecture. I certainly did not. Prepare to dedicate hours and hours study well before major tests approach. Davis students use her textbook too. It's good. It's there for a reason, use it. Promise me you'll skip lecture tho, you'll thank yourself for listening to me. Trust me!
I straight up failed her class. I retook it with Aue and got an A-. I felt like I was not learning in her class. Her lectures were too fast for my pace. I couldn't keep up with the readings. Most of it is just memorizing instead of actually understanding. I recommend taking CLAS! If you take her read the book and do book problems!!!!
Horrible professor! couldn't be any worse. Tough tests, boring classes, heavy homework. Would never take again!!!
Great professor, go to lecture and pay attention, then go back and read the book and you should be good. Just take good notes and make sure to ask questions if there is something you don't understand. Test are easy, A's on all of them, final was a littler harder. definitely recommend
Lecture is more or less useless going to because she goes too quickly. But the book is really good and almost verbatim what she says in lecture so read it and learn at your own pace. Tests are pretty straight forward. I went to class 3 times and ended up with an A- and really feel like I know the material.
Anyone saying Bruice's class is hard simply didn't put in effort to learn the material. This is the easiest teacher to do o-chem with, and EVERYTHING in lecture is identical to the book. Tests are close to book problems (esp. back of the book) and the only tricky thing is the mechs. If you put in a couple hours EVERY day, you will get an A.
Here's the thing. Yes she is straightforward like everyone says, which makes the class "easy," but she is awful when it comes to FAIRNESS. For example, she will give multiple choice questions on homework AND EXAMS that have multiple answers WITHOUT TELLING YOU its okay to choose more than one answer. Straightforward teaching, awful person.
Lectures never helped me because she always go so fast. The book is the bible. Clas tutors are the priests.
Take Bruice over Gainer. Despite what people say, she is a very nice person who is always willing to help & her tests are amazingly fair. She tells you what book problems to do and chooses exam questions from those problems. Read & practice book problems until the material becomes instinctive & o-chem may actually be your least stressful class
GO TO LECTURE!! Take Bruice over Gainer! Her tests are clear and specific. If you do book problems, you will pass! Lecture helps because she reiterates what's in the book so when you read it, it is not as confusing. Ochem is more understandable because I had her as a prof! TAKE HER!
She wrote the book, she is the book. Nothing bad about that but just make sure you are able to study well on your own. CLAS for this class is a grade-saver.
I love Bruice. Im so glad I took her for ochem. I wouldve been doomed if I took ochem with gainer. Ochem was a hell of a ride but id say I'm proud of all the studying I did.
So heres the thing about Ochem with Bruice her tests are extremely fair, some of the questions are hw/book problems. Her lectures are borderline useless. Her book needs to become your life, and CLAS your best friend. This time is time consuming, not difficult.
This professor is the hardest I have ever taken in my life. There is no partial credit on tests for the most part. Be prepared to loose all your points for writing somthing like hexene as hxeene. Spelling and transcriptions errors get 0's. Scratch somthing out? Thats a 0. Forget one of the products? Nevermind the half you got right. 0. Worst prof.
Honestly, she knows her stuff. Make a good professor however, that does not. She is rude, condensending and hard to talk too. Her homework and textbook awnser key is riddled with errors and when you point them out she will mention common sense or just be rude about it. Her lectures are basically her putting up images of the book and reading. Bad
I have mixed feelings with Bruice. She is very difficult to talk to and can be condescending. On the other hand she knows her stuff. Make sure you do all the book problems as she picks some of them out to put on exams. Definitely take CLAS. Its a time consuming class.
Bruice is quite the character, her confident condescending nature is admirable. A tenured professor with a devilishly proud gait; she strolls into class in her all white outfits like some sort of prodigal ochem deity. Don't go to lecture, do the end of book problems thoroughly/multiple times, and do practice tests. Do this 2-3 hours a day for an A.
Going to her lectures is a waste of time unless you've already read the sections she will be covering thoroughly, something many people taking this class often aren't able to do. Do every problem in the textbook and expect everything to be on the exams. Not necessarily difficult, but can be very time consuming. CLAS is hit and miss.
PYB is the best option at UCSB for organic chemistry. I mean, she literally wrote the book. Figure her system out and you're good to go. Read the book thoroughly , take your own notes. She takes ALL of her questions from book problems. She goes pretty fast in lecture. I go to lecture every day but 80% of kids don't, not necessary.
Not the best lecturer but I don't think she's trying to be one either. Her textbook is great, you can teach yourself ochem with just her textbook and sometimes khanacademy so that's saying something. Her tests are straight forward for the most part, she won't split hair with you on the tests. TAs will deduct points for missing small details thought
One of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of having. Her lectures are nearly useless. Her book is full of errors. She's a great researcher, but she's a terrible ugrad professor. If you learn from examples and in class lectures, stay far away. If you learn from the book on your own, then she might be the right fit for you.
Bruice is an interesting professor. If you dont like going to class and can learn on your own, shes awesome. However, if you need someone to explain things in lecture. DO NOT TAKE HER. She doesnt use the board, she doesnt do examples. If you cant learn on your own you will fail.
Lectures are completely useless. The textbook is absolutely everything. She is a horrible person irl. Avoid taking a class with her at all costs.
Yes, Bruice gives easy fair tests. Yes, Her book is detailed. But this is not RateMyTestgiver, this is RateMyProfessor. Bruice is a terrible professor and does not teach at any meaningful capacity. My class of 200 has maybe 20ish show up every day. I wish UCSB would let people research without making them lecture.
Bruice is probably one of the worst professors at UCSB. Her lectures consist of her reading off of ppt slides that are screenshots of pages from the textbook that she wrote--lecture is completely useless to go to. Unless you're good/disciplined enough at teaching yourself everything out of a textbook and acing tests without a curve, avoid Bruice
Lecture is useless. Study the textbook. Professor Bruice is not very willing to help students either. The only good thing about the class is that the tests are pretty straightforward.
What can I say about this class. lectures are pointless as Bruice just reads the textbook quotes and rushes through the material. There is 3 midterms and the final as the only grade sources with no curve. However the worst midterm is dropped, but there are still people that get the average and fail. I would never advise taking 109A or B with Bruice
Bruice is a terrible professor that shouldn't be teaching at UCSB. Almost gave up on chemistry because of her. Her lectures consist of her reading passages from her textbook. There are almost never examples and she never uses the blackboard. Aue and Gainor reignited my love of chemistry. They are both a bit harder but the class is way better. BAD
Here's the basic lay down. Lecture/Learning: Bruice- majority people skip bc she gives difficult to understand explanations; mostly goes (quickly) through picture slides of her book. Note: MUST read the book to learn. Testing: Very easy tests IF you read and know material; questions literally pulled from book and masteringchemistry
The worst professor I have had at UCSB. Best decision I made was switching from her class to Honors Ochem. She DOESN'T teach. Save time, don't go to class. She just clicks through slides of her book she makes you buy for $300+ which is useless without its $150 answer key. She's condescending in OHs. FIND old tests, she reuses ?'s. Switch to Honors!
I took o-chem from this teacher in 1983. At that time, getting a good grade required rote memorization and then regurgitating information onto the midterms and the final exam. I don't recall there being much useful learning. Despite getting a B or B- or whatever, I went on to grad school and did pretty well. Was not a high point of my college life!
My best advice to you would be don't go to lecture and join CLAS. All she does is read slides of her book and doesn't explain anything, my grade actually went up when I stoped going to lectures. She is also condescending and unhelpful during office hours. Join class and treat the textbook as the bible and you will do decently.
Just read the book. Her exam questions are from the book and her lectures are all reiterating from the book. You'll do find if you read and practice.
Bruice. What a lady! DO NOT BELIEVE everything people have posted about her. Yes, she's not the greatest lecturer ever, but this is COLLEGE. You should be able to pre-read and set aside time outside of class to study OCHEM. What she does in class reinforces the material. She's super fair, and has made my OCHEM experience enjoyable.
No need to go to lecture, just live and breathe by the textbook. Do ALL the recommended book problems (they're on the test) and the practice exams in the solutions manual. Dedicate yourself to learning the material you'll, at the very least, get a B in this class! And honestly, her tests are very straightforward and don't throw any curveballs.
Bruice is a solid teacher but her lectures are a bigger waste of time than trying to talk a UCSB student out of drinking Yerba. Her tests are pretty straightforward, and if you read and put in minimal effort you will do fine. She is my favorite Ochem professor out of any of them.
Literally reads off her slides. Be prepared to teach yourself by reading the textbook. Ironically, she wrote the book. The textbook is a lifesaver. But the exams arent too bad & should be do-able if you read the book or went for CLAS help.
What a difference 40 years makes. I took Bruice in 1980. She was one of the most influential Professors during my time at UCSB. In the old days there were black boards and I remember her circling all the chips in the board to memorize so we did not think they were electrons. At the time she received many teaching awards for a very good reason.
Smartest professor at UCSB. Difficult but fair exams
If you want to succeed in OChem with Bruice you have to expose yourself to the information as much as possible. Do all of the book problems at least twice, Go to CLAS. Do her online homework. Understand that if you take this class you will basically be teaching yourself. Lecture can help but its not mandatory. TAs grade SUPER FAST.
Horrible tests. VERY long/detailed, never had time to complete them all with decency. Honestly liked ochem as a subject, not with Bruice though. Talked to some others from Gainer's and didn't seem as bad, go with him if you can. Btw veryyyyy heavy focus on chapt 9 for final. Her book is good, will give her that.
Really great professor who is fair in her tests and grading. If you take her, definitely read her book!
She wrote the text book, and the irony laying here is that she is simply not good at teaching. Have fun with her, people/
I thought I could learn from the textbook on my own, but I was wrong. TERRIBLE PROFESSOR.
She doesnt teach at all. She just reads the slides, and she's rude when you ask for help. If you take this class you will be teaching Organic Chemistry to yourself :/
horrible. take anyone else but bruice lmao save yourself
Worst OChem/STEM professor on campus. Lectures are not helpful at all, she just reads off slides that are pictures of the textbook. Doesn't explain anything and is not always willing to help during office hours. Only good thing is that tests are easy because they are pulled straight from the book. Grades super tough and doesn't give partial credit.
Well a lot of people dislike Bruice, so did I in the first couple of lectures since she is so quiet, I had to stare at the ppt and the blackboard the entire time while taking notes. Then I decided to move right next to the podium to hear her better. I stopped taking notes because her lectures were actually great and I learnt than memorize.
Worst professor I've ever had. Clicked through powerpoints so quickly and expected students to do every single book problem. I did not learn the material well and would NOT recommend her at all.
My advice is to do well in this class read the book and go to her lectures (if you already read the section) and use that time as a review session. Her tests are super easy (based off book problems). She is actually pretty nice in OH despite her being cold in lecture. Mastering Chem HW was cheggable. Bruice taught me how to effectively self-study
Honestly her lecture was boring and basically she was just reading off her book. But her test was easy
She's extremely rude and lazy. She just sits in the front of her class and reads off her powerpoint. Theres truly no point in showing up to her class. Stay home, read her book, and memorize all the book problems because she uses exact questions out of the book on her midterms and finals. Again, lazy.
This class taught me how to self study. easy test. If you don't do the work you will fail. if you do the work you will get an A.
Dr. Bruice has been lecturing at UCSB for decades, and her exhaustion with undergrads shows -- her lectures are fast-paced reviews of the textbook figures and are useful as a way to keep up with the material as one studies from her textbook at their own pace. Her exams are either verbatim book problems or slightly modified ones, easy to succeed on!
Basically you are teaching yourself everything. Literally everything. If you teach yourself and understand all the book problems and memorize them you will do fine, but it is a lot of stuff. The final was way harder than her midterms. If she asks a question that was not a book problem you are screwed. If you want to actually learn don't take her.
She should be ashamed of herself. You're basically in charge of learning all the material yourself while she just stands up there. Textbook shouldn't be super necessary but it IS because she doesn't teach and you'll be depending on that thing for your life. I just wouldn't recommend taking her. Not exactly a point in showing up to class
I got a 3.8 my 1st year and got a C. Don't have the time to devote my life to ochem but that's what you'll be doing in this class. Say goodbye to die and the DP dream, sell those die on ebay boys. Terrible prof
She's definitely the greatest professor in UCSB.
The worst prof I've ever had. Gives zero partial credit on tests and makes them extremely long. Goes twice as fast as the other ochem classes, leaving you 2 chapters ahead of everyone else. Her textbook is full of errors and forces you to teach yourself. Was super rude to me in OH and basically made me feel even worse about a bad midterm grade
This professor was AMAZING for my chemistry classes. She is so understanding and kind. Anyone who has anything negative to say about her is just upset that they didn't understand the material because she explained and taught amazingly. I would say she was one of the best professors at UCSB. She understood how to teach the class efficiently.
