Goes through material very quickly, assumes that you already know a lot
AWESOME! But tests are Difficult! Willing to answer questions so ask!
Good Teacher, but very narrow minded.....
asumes you know everything moves fast and is weird

Great for Calc I
pretty funny, moves fast but is a good teacher, actively involves class in stuff, great examples, very helpful outside of class and extremely understanding. highly reccomended!
Very helpful and kind. She will do everything she can to help you if you know enough to ask for it.
Her explanations are confusing because she makes things much harder than they need to be.
took calc in high school.. yet she still managed to confuse me on a few things..
Her tests are not necessarily difficult but unpredicable. She places too much emphasis on what she calls being clever rather than presenting material in a concise and mechanical manner. The message is easily lost as she flies off on a clever tangent.
she explains things very well if you listen to her...I thought she was a really good techer but assigned way too much homework...I would take another math class from her again!...
I had her for pre-calc and she was an excellent prof. She moves through material very quickly, and explains well, but if you aren't willing to put in the work you won't do well. She expects alot, but gives alot in return, if you are willing to ask.
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!
intense hatred
Very nice Professor and very helpful. Knows her material well and teaches very clearly. Good Professor to have.

Precalc was actually really helpful. Before I took her class, I wasn't very good at math at all, but she explained everything thouroughly and used real-world examples. It it hadn't been for her, I wouldn't have made it through calc 1 & 2. Really nice & friendly
She likes to teach fast and is always moving forward but she's a good teacher. Just don't skip class because you will miss a lot in one day. Her tests are fair and she doesn't test you on anything except for what she teaches in class and she only tests to see that you know the basic concepts.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. VERY clear, does not skip "simple" steps. Always available for questions. Tests are hard but always a good representation of the material.
Nice woman but horrible at teaching. She really is confusing and almost never gives steps for solving problems. Asks the class how to do the problem instead of just teaching it, so you almost never hear a very good explanation. Tests suck. Unreasonable amount of homework. I don't reccomend her.
She expects alot from her students. Impossible to get an A in her Calc 2 class. Tests are too long. Hw is graded hard.
very rude
jumps around a lot, very hard to follow, i've had much better calculus professors.
Nice lady, but she goes over the material too fast. Never really goes over the steps to solving the problems. Her style of teaching for this class is she expects you to know it all. Stay clear of her classes.
she really does expect you to know a lot of what she teaches before she teaches it, which is difficult- i mean, that is the whole reason youre taking the class, is to learn, not to review.

The worst teacher ever.Doesn't help you at all, expects you to know all the****.
Goes through material at a very fast pace, but will always hold for questions.
Good teacher. Do not need to purchase book, everything is done online. Fast paced in lecture but it's like a high school first year algebra course. If you learn easily and don't mind only coming to class once a week instead of 3. You'll love it! Sometimes writes on the board too small but if you ask her she will write bigger!
Not a bad teacher necessarily, went over material pretty quickly and expected to you be on your A game. Tests were a fair coverage of material. Grading of homework is pretty bogus, but her grading system regardless of that is pretty leinant. I'll still say I did better in precalc in high school....
Great Prof. She explains material quickly and well, makes sure students understand--lots of inclass participation--and uses lot of useful example. Doing homework helps greatly, and she'll go over that in class before it's due. She's nice, helpful if you have any problems, and funny.
professor drewniany is very nice and i took the online class where we met one day a week and had to go to the math den for 2 hours a week as well as the class. she explained everything very well but so did the software on the computers. the software is awesome and helps you alot.
awesome teacher
Great prof. makes everything clear, if you bomb a test she will boost your grade if you do well on the final.
A little strange, and gives a decent amount of work; however, she is nice and good teacher.
Goes at a very fast pace, expects you to know everything. However she presents the information in an energetic and sometimes humorous style, making it somewhat interesting. Only take the class if you want to work hard.
The best math teacher I've ever had. Enthusiastic and fun. Be ready for work, but she's pretty clear about most subjects.
Friggen AMAZING professor. Best I've ever met. If you intend to teach math, DEFINITELY take a class with her just to observe her teaching styles. She actually incorporates all that stuff you learn about in Ed Psych which is awesome. Not to mention just a fabulous, friendly person in general.
Teacher moves way too fast. Assumes we know more than we should. Doesn't really look at the HW problems she assigns us. In class when we get to something important, she likes to whisper it while covering her mouth. She uses "obviously" and "of course" all the time. Jumps around and skips many steps when going over new material. Avoid at all costs.
In all fairness its calc II... not easy to teach. Very good grading technique which leaves room for mess ups. Sometimes alil too involved with proofs. Tests at times do not resemble HW. Get ready to do alot of HW with mandatory attendace. Not and easy class but you will learn. Overall I liked her alot and she added personality to Calc II.

She is a good teach and makes sure you know the material. She will try to explain it so you can understand her.
Spent the whole semester trying to figure out how someone could be so nice yet give such evil tests.
I felt like her exams didn't test what you really knew. Teaching style can be hard to follow. I scored in the 60s on my first two tests, did all the homework, and payed attention. But if you show up for class, she gives you an opportunity during the final to make up for lost points on exams. I aced the final and ended up getting an A- in the class.
Calc I...class can go slow if you've already taken calc and can remember a lot of the material. goes slow for those that don't understand in my class. Great personality, has these odd quirks that make her class fun. Is always willing to help ppl w/HW, even during class time for a bit. Very active in the first class folder-quick to respond.
I found her to be amazingly helpful, and really interested in student progress. However, she has some of the most challenging math-based exams I've ever taken. Sometimes she can be hard to follow in class, but all around a teacher that makes you know the topic like the back of your hand.
Very enthusiastic and lots of energy. Be willing to work because there is a ton of hw and she moves very quickly. Her grading procedure on test is fair and if you mess up on an exam you can make up for it with your final.
She's a terrible teacher! End of story
She's so nice, loved her for calcI but I wouldn't recommend her for calcII. The last quarter of the semester felt rushed and there was a LOT of homework compared to other calc classes. On the positive: the quizzes were on the easier side and although she isn't always clear in class, she's very concise and helpful during office hours.
Good professor, will go through material as fast as students will let her. Tough tests and quizzes, but she makes you learn. Willing to help, with good partial credit, and if you do well on the final, she will boost other test grades. Very energetic, and a little odd, but she knows her stuff.
Moves fast, but really knows what she is talking about and makes the material fairly easy to understand. Lot of work required, both online and in paper. The tests can really screw you over, but she'll sometimes grade on a curve. Really seems to care about helping all her students leave the class with a passing grade and an understanding of calc
She is great and always willing to help students out. Very effective. Took calculus for a challenge and it turned out to be a breeze with her.
Very good teacher. She was very understanding about a family problem I had that was making it difficult for me to attend recitation and finish all my assignments. All your tests are scaled based on how you do on the final. I should have gotten a D but she was very helpful.
I love Paula. I had her for both calc 1&2 and shes excellent in both. Shes very helpful and is always willing to change the way the class is run and the way she teaches to benefit the individual class that particular semester. Shes very nice and her tests arent easy but theyre still very reasonable and definitely doable. I wish she taught calc 3.
Overall, Paula is an excellent teacher. She is more than willing to invest in her students who are struggling. She goes through subject matter extremely quickly, so be prepared to work hard (if you're not a natural genius). Classes are definitely worth going to; I never missed a class.
She's good for calc I but it won't be easy
Calc 2 is hard, but she is a great teacher. Made everything make sense. The class moves, so it's easy to fall behind, make sure to get help when you need it. Probably the best option for calc 2.
She is definitely the best mathematics teacher I've had. She's super excited about teaching the material, and really makes the atmosphere positive.
She is a good teacher but she books through the material. Her tests are reasonable and so are the quizzes if you follow along with the lectures well.
Have you ever fallen asleep in a class and felt like you woke up in another class completely? Has a simple concept been explained to you in such a confusing way that you began to question the concept of math? Much less your own existence? If you haven't, I suggest you take Paula's class.
Paula is, hands down, the best math teacher I've ever had. She is very clear and understanding and is always available during office hours to further explain anything you didn't get during class. Her exams are very fair and don't put any trick questions, just the main points of the course. She is very pleasant, take Paula!!!!
Paula gave me her entire saturday at the library in Old Town so she could help me catch up on matierial I could not grasp. I ended up getting a C in the course, but that was a reflection of how much effort I put forth not paula. Paula was one of the best teachers I ever had. Study, work hard, ask for help, and she will not let you down.
Very helpful and cares about her students
Paula is an awesome professor. Sometimes she can talk fast, but if you pay attention, she is VERY CLEAR. Exams aren't too bad.
Professor Drewniany is probably one of Umaine's best math teachers. She may seem somewhat overly enthusiastic at first, but she really loves her job and helping any of her students. She tries to get to know everyone by name and genuinely cares about her students and their education. Very approachable, and she definitely knows her calculus!
She is an amazing teacher, very clear in class and wants you to understand the material. She cares and shows it. The tests are kind of hard though and require a fair amount of studying. You can do very well if you just study for tests and come to class because she will scale your grade based on attendance and improvement on the final.
Love her! She is the kindest lady and great teacher. Very flexible and always wants to help. She's great and a lot easier than her husband Van Steinberg
Very kind, very busy, but pay attention and ASK QUESTIONS no matter how dumb you think it is because there is a 100% chance 50% of the class has no idea whats going on.
Great teacher. She goes through each problem in great detail and labels clearly every step so that you can follow the steps when doing problems out of class or on the test. Always responded to my emails and was always available to meet outside of class. By far the best math professor at Umaine.
She's a bit quiet and mousey, tends to move a little fast unless asked to slow down, and if you sit in the back of the room - you'll learn nothing. You have to be actively paying attention, but you learn a lot.
Awesome
was very helpful and laid out the objectives and concepts clearly in lecture. Homework wasn't so bad, tests were really tough and consisted of really the toughest homework problems but they were nothing that she didn't teach in class. Gives you tons of opportunities to make up points, especially on the final. In short, great professor, tough class
Her scale is incredibly generous, on top of the fact that she is a very good teacher to begin with.
She does her best to always try to help you if you're struggling. But she only has one way of explaining things and if you don't get it that way, I hope you go to recitation. Tests are fair, reasonable and if you attend recitation you'll pass. She's always looking for questions so feel free to speak up. I took calc last year so it was same material
Great teacher who wants to help
Paula is a nice teacher, but if you don't go to recitation and lecture you will fail
Highly recommended for calc 1! She was my favorite professor of the semester when I took her class! The homework she gives tends to be harder than the tests, but as long as you pay attention in both lecture and try in recitation you'll be fine! Very helpful at the end of the semester with grading as well. 10/10 reccomend her!
Gives an unreasonable amount of homework, on average 25-35 extremely lengthy problems a week. Problems typically take a MINIMUM of 15-25 minutes each(if you get it right the first time). She only does examples ever, no notes. You never will know how or why your doing something. If your an engineer, good luck on time management with all the work
In a class where your grade (or even passing/failing) can depend on a professor, P. Drewniany is one of the best choices out there. Despite the difficult material, well structured lectures and supporting HW do a good job covering all the bases. Very generous testing system, pretty much ensuring you will pass regardless of slipups.
She is a great teacher, and very forward about expectations and what you need to do to pass. She does everything she can to make sure everyone understands but also moves at a fast enough pace that even missing three classes we covered all the material. As long as you go to class and do the homework you can't go wrong.
We used a textbook that had NO instructions whatsoever on how to solve the problems, it was just a book full of problems. And, she didn't teach us ANY lessons. She put us in groups and made us teach pre-calculus to ourselves and NEVER TAUGHT. Good one on one but don't expect help in class because she's helping everyone instead of teaching it to us.
Paula has been my all time favorite math professor so far at Umaine. She is the sweetest and most generous lady you could have for a calculus class. Constant extra credit opportunities i.e. group exam redo's, scaling, etc. Fantastic. Go to class, practice the online homework, go to the math lab on the occasion, and you will pass for sure!
This instructor somehow managed to learn the names of every student in a full lecture hall! She clearly cares and works very hard to keep the class engaged. Additionally, she always takes time for student questions and makes a real effort to give good answers.
Easy grader & uses very generous scaling. Textbook was completely useless and complicated in comparison to her lectures which used many pertinent examples of concepts. Paula is very open to questions and feedback and really knows what she's doing as a calculus instructor. She can be a little erratic sometimes but it's entertaining.
Paula is quite sporatic, but a pretty decent professor. She gives much opportunity for scaling and extra credit, and is very accessible outside class. Tests are manageable, problems usually similar to whats in class or recitation. Beware of quizzes, those are usually very different from what's in class. Go to lecture, and you'll get by just fine
First off, Calc 2 is the hardest math class... so be prepared. Second, she consistently uses iClickers to gauge where everyone one is at as far as understanding each subject. That being said, Paula is the most caring and considerate teacher I've ever had. She truly cares about every student and if you show up and care about the class she will help.
Without a doubt: one of the WORST professors I have ever had. She interrupts when you ask a question, her lectures very rarely line up with what is on tests, and her way of explaining mathematical rules and concepts are very confusing on top of all that. I advise you: avoid her classes at all costs!
Caring person, awful teacher. Never gives notes, only examples of problems
Professor Drewniany is a sweet lady. I had her for Calc II during the coronavirus pandemic and she was very accommodating to the transition. For the in-person portion of the course, it was very participation-heavy. Both on campus and online, she gives constant opportunities for extra credit. She truly wants students to learn and to pass.
Paula offers a wide assortment of extra credit opportunities. This is because she doesn't teach the material well enough the first time. She assigns an insane amount of homework, and if you're unable to complete it she assumes it's out of laziness.
There are often quizzes weekly and four big tests throughout the semester. If you do better on the final, she will raise your test grades slightly to match your improvements. Participation is counted through iClicker. There is occasionally group work. She's quick to respond to emails and is very understanding
One of the kindest Professors, and people. She will do whatever it takes for you to succeed, if you're willing to put in the work.
It is very fast paced and hard to keep up.
Talks very fast and will bang the table if she thinks people arent listening so you can wake up when really nobody knows What shes talking about. Doesnt seem to understand people have other classes and do not just study math all day.
Makes you watch videos and take video quizzes and do multiple homework assignments before a quiz. Basically teaching yourself calculus. Will go in circles to answer your question and makes you more confused. Thinks you have time between other classes to study math.
Very difficult tests and hard to follow lectures. Gets upset when no one can answer her questions when she doesn't explain the topic clearly. Tries to squeeze in material without concern of if people learn it. Seems to be the main Calc II professor right now but if you can avoid her do yourself a favor and choose someone else.
Paula is a great professor, lectures tend to be a bit all over the place but they make sense a majority of the time. She gives a lot of partial credit and scales your grades at the end. Her tests tend to be easier than the other 127 professors by content but heavy on the memorization of formulas
she is difficult to work with.
There are many lectures, and you can't miss one. I missed a decent amount of lectures since I was sick a lot. The material that is on the homework rarely matches the types of questions asked on tests and has little to no overlap with khan academy. I was constantly irritated with low test grades even though I felt I did meet a competency standard.
The material in lectures, on homeworks, and exams barely aligned. I had a hard time following and retaining what she was teaching in lecture. The way this class was structured and scaled was quick different (more difficult) compared to other calc 2 professors.
Paula is a very kind and helpful professor, though the flipped classroom setup was not for me. You teach yourself pre-calculus through videos and quizzes 2-3 times a week made by another UMaine professor, and class time, only 50 minutes, is spent reviewing your workbook. Tests and quizzes are easy if you ask questions and do all your assigned work.
I took MAT127 as a freshman with AP calc behind me. The lectures were amazing, but the recitations with the TAs were very difficult and did not help me learn. Thus, I was understanding all the information in the lectures but not getting any helpful practice which made it difficult to succeed in this class. I got hundreds on HW and 60s-80s on tests.
Overall a very good math professor. She knows that there are different levels of understanding in her class and she is sure to show her work through to completion so everyone can understand it. She doesn't assume that certain things are obvious to everybody. Very kind professor.
The class BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
Very nice and kind person. She is very helpful, in and out of class, and offers opportunities to redo and correct quizzes and tests. Pearson (idk if that counts as a textbook) sucks though, but she is good.
Paula's class can be challenging, but with hard work and using resources like unstuck study, you can succeed. She really wants you to learn, so engage in class and you'll do well.
This professor is a nice person but goes 100 miles an hour during her lectures, bangs on tables when she THINKS students are falling asleep, and the material comes at you way too fast anyway never mind the pace she speaks at.
Tried really hard liking her. I did multiple study sessions and still ended up failing the tests. A reviewer said she allowed retakes, but you could only do them if you got under 70%, and your new score would be an average of the retake and 70%. I emailed her about posting notes, she replied 2 weeks later saying she had "tech issues", never posted.
This lady is pretty crazy. She's got more energy than any sane individual should in an 8am math class. She jumps around the classroom and gives weird hand signals to students. Her grading is confusing to follow, but pretty generous. Take notes. Go to class. You'll be fine as long as you make sure to do the homework and understand the material.
It was a dark early monday 8 am class. I walked in and paula could sense my unworthiness of calc 2 and she proceeded to walk up and snatch my soul and eat it in front of me. Otherwise not too bad.
Paula was a mixed bag. She wasn't very understanding most of the time. But she did have her moments of kindness. I loved her lectures, they were fun and she teaches well. I just think that from my personal experience she isn't always understanding of outside circumstances (i.e. sickness, medical issues etc.). Other than that she was alright.
The class moves at a fast pace, but she goes over everything thoroughly. It's important to attend every class and ask questions so you don't fall behind.
