Good Professor! Id recommend her if you have to take either of these classes!

McCoy is a very good professor, however her exams are very difficult. You have to put forth a lot of effort to make a ggod grade and even then you don't do as well as expected. She is very helpful and knows her stuff but be prepared to study study study.
Worst professor I have had in my four years in college. Singles students out and berates them if they do not agree with what she says.
Very good professor. She helps you all that she can. Her tests are pretty difficult but as long as you study a lot you will do fine.
I was interested in Psych before this class, but she stole that joy. McCoy does not like to be questioned or bothered by students. It is obvious that she would rather be in her clinical practice than at State. Oh yea-she says 85 ummms in 50 minutes. hows that for annoying?
Horrible professor. She is so pessimistic and rude to her students. She has turned me completely against psychology. awful teacher.
This woman is very different. Instead of encouraging students to continue on to grad school, she basically tells them they don't have a chance. Her classes are not as difficult as she would like to think but if you have an interest in psych, don't take her or you will change her mind. YUCK
One word will do, "AWEFUL!"
Terrible instructor. Avoid if possible. Lectures are long and boring. She is always late for class, never organized and reads directly from a slip of paper throughout the entire lecture. It was really terrible.
I actually like her, the class is boring i admit but if you are one of those people who like to sit and take notes then you'll like her class. The tests are pretty easy but to get a good grade you do need to study and the homework is just an easyyy A. Cusses a lot but pretty good class
Very interesting to listen to. I learned a lot. Appreciated her persistence in pushing her students to do well. I got C's on all my tests, but still ended up with a B. She does not take role, but if you show up, she'll know you are trying. HIGHLY INTELLIGENT
She was cool. She was a pretty hard teacher and she wanted to make sure that we all knew are stuff. You earn your grade and she made sure of that.
a real witch. I wish someone would whack that mole off of her face.

I was really excited about taking this class before I started. I even thought about switching my major to psychology. Now I think I'll stick to criminal justice. She was very rude and acted as though she hated teaching. I believe she needs to see a psychologist herself.
She appears to show favoritism, embarassing classmates during her lectures. If you take this class, be prepared to agree with her point of view, or she may humiliate or otherwise assert her authority. Dress down, as the more trendy classmates seemed to get the worst treatment - she was the most helpful to people she seemed to feel sorry for.
This class was hard as hell, so I dropped it. She is a great "teacher," in that you can learn a hell of a lot from her, and she really gets deep into the material. BUT if you want to make an easy A, don't take her- at least not for this course. Also, she doesn't hand out study guides, the tests are part multiple choice, part essay (the hardest part), and the average grade for students is a C. And I think she had it out for that deaf girl that was in our class :-( ...
First of all, before they have someone teaching a personality class, the instructor should have one. She makes her test extremely difficult and confusing. Picks out mundane details to test you on. terrible lectures, she reads from a paper. Doesnt give you time to take decent notes and what she emphasises in class is not on the test. Avoid her
horrible teacher! did end up getting a B in her class, had to work my butt off for it though! she goes extremely fast, her tests are hard... just study, study, study and you'll do fine. you have to work hard though.
Took her in a six week summer class, Psychology of Medicine. She is an instructor who will challenge you to do your best. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy A, but if you are a good serious student you can get an A - I did. I think Paula is nice too.
She makes the material very interesting. She gives you A LOT of notes. I have about 50 pgs for 3 ch. She is not an easy A, but you will learn so much interesting information. The test format is easy, but you have to know all of the notes to get the answers right. She doesn't like interruptions, otherwise shes very nice.
If you want to go to grad school take her classes. She tells you usueful information unlike other easier psych professors. Go to class and be on time! If you have questions go to her office hours she is very nice then. She dictates notes rather fast so make sure you read the material beforehand so you know what's important to write or bring a tape
i learned quite a bit in her class. it got pretty boring at times, but the information was given well and her tests/homeworks were pretty easy.
She is pretty intimidating in class. Ive found her to be quite nice and helpful out of class. Her grading scale is good also.
My fav TEACHER,slackers give her unfair badraps Gives highered we deserve/prep us for our MA/PhD integrating book content, real life clinical eg scenarios, modules not in the book,Reinforces love 4 psych. If you want to be competent in your field TAKE McCOY,helps so much in/out of/for class, work future w/incredible knowledge, encouragement,& a smile!
she is the worst teacher ever and I took an F one semester just so I didn't have to go back to her class..... She is rude and lectures are BORING!
I have graduated for WVSU and have a MA degree and have not experienced a prof like McCoy. She is not a "people person" and I think that she doesn't like her job well b/c she would be more willing to explain things to students. I feel that she give the department a bad name. The dept head should really consider her employment.
Take at your own risk!!!!!! She cannot teach.
shes a good teacher, sometimes a little too much to handle and sometimes goes a little off base, but if psych is your interest then shes awesome.
Teacher is hardcore never let yer cell go off in class...but her grading scale is very good, a 75 percent is a (B).
Made me switch majors to social work. Then I found out not all professors in the psych dept were crazy. They should not have her teaching an intro class. She turns students off by her attitue and inability to teach.
She isn't very intelligent. Doesn't speak/lecture well at all. It is a shame because the rest of the professors in the department seem quite educated and knowledgable about the subject material. She may have been hired through some kind of affirmative action policy that requires the hiring of people with psychiatric disabilities.
She has more issues than Norman Bates.
very serious professor
Very good teacher, you do have to work hard - cannot be one who procrastinates. She is very intelligent and helpful. She cares about the student's future plans and goes out of her way to help.
Believe all the bad things you read about this professor. She has a bad attitude and is very angry. She doesn't like medical doctors and calls them all arrogant so don't mention them in class. She won't help you when you ask questions and will question why you even asked them. She is hostile to most students. She's gonna get fired soon.
She goes crazy if your cell phone goes off and will kick you out of class and take points off your class. She says it is university policy, but it isn't. It's her policy. She will make new rules up to get her way like if you are late you get points off your test. She tested us on the same chapter for two different tests for no reason.
Has a major attitude problem. She acts mentally ill and mumbles to herself constantly and tries to violate the rights of others. She needs help.
lies all the time about everything and makes requirments up. take a tape recorder and she'll shut up and get scared. she talks about making it hard on students on purpose.
her understanding of psychology could be wadded up in a little ball and shoved in an ants butt (and it would still bounce around)
All the proffessors know something is wrong with her and all the students make fun of how insane she acts. Someone needs to stop this rampaging lady, she's out of control.
Easy to understand but you'll have no idea where the tests are coming from, shes pretty helpful outside of class but in class..forget about it. Almost made me decide to not get a minor in psychology, but thank God for Dr. Spencer.
Prof. McCoy takes alot of critizism and I must admit even I have critized, however she seems a bit overwhelmed and we all have that ability. Catch her out of class and you will see the real woman. Very Pleasant. However, it may be me but her teaching had well exceeded an introduction level. Expect to study hard. The tests are crazy as heck.
She is mad and teaches bad because she got her degree from one of the lowest ranked PHD programs in the country, North Texas
People should quit complaining about being expected to work hard. She knows the material well, so don't be afraid to ask RELEVANT questions. Use her office hrs - keeps rest of her sched pretty packed. If you show her you have potential, & care about the coursework, she will go above & beyond to help as much as possible! Take if you want to learn.
She has serious problems. This is the only place that would take her. They obviously didn't realize they were taking on damaged goods.
terrible, has no idea what she is talking about. Talks down about other faculty
She's cuckoo for cocoa puffs. I took this class 2 years ago. She presented lecture material fairly clearly which helped when studying for her tests. However, she gets very angry very easily. She snaps at people over NOTHING and has a holier-than-thou attitude. Coming to class wasn't very enjoyable ... you never knew when she'd be in a bad mood.
Wasn't too fond of her at first, but by the end of the semester I liked her. She is there to teach those who are serious about their college careers. If you're a slacker, drop the class. A lot of content to remember for the tests, take a tape recorder to get the lectures b/c it goes fast and is hard to write everything down without forgetting.
this lady had issues. Tries to act intelligent, but you can tell she is using covering up for her faults. Talks about other professors in a negative way. I have no respect for her at all. Take another professor if possible
Is not helpful outside of class and will argue with you and accuse you of everything she does. All you have to do is take it from another university or online.
I love her! Be prepared to work...she's no push-over.
I enjoyed taking her class. My boyfriend Dan thought it was easy. Glad it is over. We love it.
dont take her. its obvious she hates her job.if you're going to be 1 min late for her class, dont go. 65% of ppl either fail or drop her course if that tells you anything. dont ask Q's b/c she'll make you feel stupid for asking it & rub her Ph.D in your face. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!(coming from an A student)
I took Psych 151 with Paula McCoy at the end of my Junior year and hers was the hardest class I have had yet. I am a straight A student and struggled to recieve a C- in her "Intro" level Psych class. Her personal life (unstable emotions) tend to often overlap in her teaching- often making her unaproachable and extremely hateful or overemotional.
She is an excellet and a very professional instructor. She is serious about her classes and expects her students to do the same. It is not an easy A, you have to earn it. You will leave her class knowing more than just what's in the text book. I think this class should taken by every Psychology major.
Dr. McCoy is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever met. She knows her stuff. You have to work hard and show up for class to pass. You will leave her class knowing more about psychology then any other professor at WVSU. She is not easy, but her classes are worth taking. She is an excellent professor!
She is very intelligent but she is a control freak. If a phone goes off, she will lie and say there has already been a warning and try to kick that person out. She gives good notes. Show up for class and you won't have any problems.
She is the most horrible prof that I have ever had! She is rude, obnoxious and the biggest control freak that I have ever met. She seems to be knowledgeable but I would not take her class unless psychology is your major.
Im not saying she isnt intelligent, but she is the absolute WORST *person* I have ever met/dealt with! It goes beyond just a"tough professor".Shes disrespectful, derogatory, arrogant, spiteful, has favorites and lets her personal issues overshadow her professional duty as a teacher. Many want to report her. Great teacher if you never have to meet her!
Rude and Disrespectful teacher. She treats her students like they are at the elementary level.. Do not take this professor!
Her issues have issues.
She seems to have personal issues that she brings into the classroom. The rest of the department is fabulous, but she is a huge black mark for the University. Very unprofessional, she talks about other professors in class.
Psychology is my major, and I'm trying to avoid her like the plague. I missed two days of class because I had the flu. I went to the doctor and had an excuse, which she accepted. She gave me the work I missed. But when I asked for the date of the final, she refused because it wasn't fair for the students who came to class. Ever since she's hated me
I emailed Dr. McCoy about the first homework assignment and she told me she didn't answer our questions because she has answered them in class already. I don't think that is fair. She may have answered them but I obviously didn't get that piece of information. I would have failed that class had I not dropped it.
She does seem to know her stuff. Her notes are dictated well, but mostly from the book. She does seem to spend most of her time just reading from the book. In class she is rude, condescending, hateful, and very unpleasant. She is unapproachable. She does seem to bring her issues to class with her. I can't understand why no one keeps her in check!
difficult class difficult instructor! She is not as bad as some people make her out to be. She expects students to act professionally and not disrupt others...attention to detail is also key in her classes. I missed quite a bit of class but kept up with the textbook and still managed an A.
She is terrible. Avoid if possible. I really lost all respect for her when she degraded all of the other professors in the department. her tests are confusing and she has her own issues she needs to work on.
It's ironic that, with so many "issues," she is teaching about issues. Almost all seem to get a C or fail. She's very antagonizing: She grades your homework according to her mood (which swings), she would yell at students in class, she accused someone of trying to kill her (with flu), and much of what she teaches is from the 80's (incorrect). Awful
Psychology of Personality was the first course I had ever taken of McCoy's and reading all of these reviews before the course began kind of scared me. After taking her course, I can assure you that she is actually a wonderful teacher. If you show up, take notes, study, and put in some effort, you will pass.
Needs to get her life together and possibly see a psychologist herself. I feel for her. She also seems to pick on parents ( obviously never a mother) and other races. She also cusses like a sailor so be prepared for that one.
Needs to get her self together before teaching about ethics. Needs to respect students. Does not like if you ask questions.
Do not dare speak in her class if you would like an A stay as far away as you can. Oh and if you have a cold don't cough near her or try to drink water you will get lectured about how rude you are!! Horrible
I did ok in her class, so I'm not saying this out of spite, but she may need to take a leave of absence to focus on her mental health. It can be hard to admit when you need help, especially for a clinical psychologist, but she NEEDS to do it. She is forgetful, inconsistent, and neurotic. Aside from that, she is knowledgable & helpful.
Even though she says she doesn't mind people asking questions, this is just a front. If you're a minute late for a quiz, she'll make you go into another room to take it. Don't attempt to chew gum or drink anything in front of her without getting glared at. She's egotistical, talks about other faculty and how they teach nothing relevant. F-
Don't take her classes unless you have to. She is unstable. She does not respect you. Your time is not important. She teaches ethics but does not practice it. She is the only licensed psyc on staff so WVSU has to keep her (ex: complaints against her always get dismissed). Graduated w/ a 4.0, not being spiteful, but avoid her if you can.
Listen. Paula is the worst professor ever. She has her own problems, as others have said. She says we are unprofessional, but that is her. SHE is unprofessional, disrespectful, and rude! Shes crazy rediculus. A kid doesnt understand something or misunderstands something and she blows them off. I could go on and on FOREVER but Im outta characters
Dr. McCoy is very professional. However, she is a perfectionist. If she doesnt like an answer, or simply something you say, she wont hesitate to correct you. She started taking points off of tests in my class if we came in late. She even locked a girl out of class one day lol this made me hate her at first, but overall shes not a bad teacher.
I've had her multiple times. She's fine in class, just try not to come into one on one contact with her often. if you take her practicum, that's when you'll see what these bad ratings are about. As good of an opportunity it is, its not worth it with her. She can really be an awful person so just keep your distance.
Avoid taking her for a practicum. Choose words wisely in emails; she takes everything as an attack. She is rude, egotistical, and makes inappropriate comments about those she cannot relate to, such as parents and minorities. She is not sympathetic to your issues (family, health, vehicle, etc.) and thinks you can drop everything for her class.
She is probably the worst teacher at WVSU. She is a bad lecturer and boring. Very hard to get in contact with after class. I don't know anybody who liked her there.
as others have said, she teaches ethics but does not practice ethics. she should not be a professor.
Its possible to get an A in her classes, but its extremely hard. She makes everything way harder than it needs to be, and CONFUSING. I, along with many other students, will be doing everything I can do avoid having to take another one of her classes.
My best advice is to try to avoid this professor as much as possible.
Had her for one class and will now do everything I can do avoid having her again. Cant say what I really want or this might not get approved, but this woman is so rude and honestly just mean. Someone can ask a simple question and shell bite their head off, or someone can pop their knuckles and shell throw a fit. Idk how shes still teaching.
Dr. McCoy is a very rude woman. I dont understand how she hasnt been fired for some of the discriminatory statements she has said. That being said, her tests are very easy and she isnt a tough grader. If you have to take her dont worry, her class is annoying but its an easy A if you read your textbook and pay attention in class.
McCoy is the sole reason why Im leaving WVSU. She is rude, disrespectful, unprofessional, racist, and overall an awful person. Avoid her the best you can. I used to love psych but she has made me hate it. She will blame others for her mistakes. She degrades staff and students constantly. I dont know why shes still at State. Its ridiculous.
There are many bad reviews on here and at first, I did not like her as well. I learned if you show her respect she will show you respect as well. She is very intelligent but has some communication issues. She does respond to emails quickly so that is great. I find her to be a good teacher if you want to put in the work for it.
I can't say what I really want to say because of the guidelines, but this woman is by far the worst person I have ever met. She is rude, unfair, crazy, racist, etc. The only reason she is still on this campus is that they won't fire her because she is the only clinical psychologist. Don't take this old hag unless you want psychology ruined for you
She is derogatory to other races whilst working at an HBCU. Guidelines say I can't mention that she had favorites however, it's true. I truly hated every minute I had to be with her, she hates people who are disabled, pregnant/ parents, other races. STAY AWAY
WORST professor I have ever had, I had to leave WVSU because of her. Highly rude and
A lot of bad reviews but this professor has a standard class. 3 Exams throughout the year with as well as an assigned paper. Tests consists of an essay portion, fill in the blank, and multiple choice. This has been my advisor for over a year and she truly cares about her students. She can be VERY blunt but only wants the best.
Dr. McCoy is a brilliant Clinical Psychologist, and she really cares about her students learning the material that is crucial in the field of psychology. If you have the chance, take her for abnormal. She has a wide variety of experience working with diverse client populations and is very passionate about the study of psychopathology.
