she's really nice and knows what she's teaching. she gives a lot of homework or papers but it's worth it because you learn a lot and you learn to write! no kidding!
Very helpful, she likes hardwork.Highly recommended.
Highly recommended. Great professor that actually get students to learn and improve writing. Don't let the work scare you off. Just stay on task- do the work. easy A supposely. I had it in summer and manage to cruise w/ an A thus, it's 2x more to procrastinate during semester. She did offer lots of xcredit so ask for it. Excellent teacher.
She is a good woman. I liked her a lot.
she is great teacher! she was very easy and the class is a lot of fun! you must read the books given to you and make sure to do EVERY homework given (its really easy) also if you dont like your grade on any essay you wrote, redo it and fix what you did wrong, she will always be helfup and willing to give you a higher grade! TAKE HER CLASS!
GREAT class for students who will take it seriously. LOTS of work, reading, writing. WORTH it if you want a career in journalism. you LEARN alot & you get what you put into it. she's a great teacher who is willing to help you & gets excited about opportunities for you as a writer. JOIN THE WRITZERS' GUILD. gets you passionate & outside your box.
Great teacher! she kept me interested the semister. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to get alot of good information. And not to mention I got an A.
she's a really fun and outgoing. she will remind you of your good high school teacher. she would do anything to make all of ehr students pass the class and the mastery exam. she even helps you with the portfolio if you don't pass the exam. she great.
She is a very laid back teacher, making the class simple. However, sometimes its too lenient and she lets you turn in work way passed the deadline, making it frustrating for those who do work on time. She is also unusually liberal and discusions lead no where.
Awesome, the best of what Delta has to offer. Really cares. Knows a lot, excellent teacher and resource. A+++
GREAT teach. laid back took her 9 week course of english 1a...must do the Etudes to get a good grade, passed with a B and i'm horrible at english!
SHE'S AN OK TEACHER AT TIMES GETS REAL IMPATIENT WHEN STUDENTS DO KNOW CERTAIN THINGS LIKE MLA FORMAT. I WON'T TAKE HER AGAIN FOR ENGLISH.
Mrs. Sheil was a great teacher. She explained everything very well and if you didnt get it she would explain it until you did. She was very laid back and made the class interesting.
She is a wonderful teacher, very helpful, give work but it is not hard. Just read the book. Get the answer. Her class teaches you something better than others. She's fun and kind of interesting. Its so not boring in her class. Try hard & you will get an A. showing up because its not hard if you really try 2 read the book.
Mrs.Sheil is one of the greats at Delta! She is very clear w/ assignments, very helpful, and goes the extra mile. She makes the tedious job of writing essays approachable. She shows you how to break it down and get it done. The accelerated class is not bad as long as you keep up and show up. She is a gem of a teacher!
Do your homework, and listen to her instructions. She is a good teacher, and I learned a great deal from taking her class. If you take her, it will help you for your future English classes.
Author, reporter, and professor she has a lot of first hand experience in the fields of prose, writing, and literature. Be sure to have an open communication with her and you will succeed. I have not see a professor with such passion for her students success. I hope she stays the same throughout her career.
wonderful teacher, she has an editors eye so your grammar and writing better be proof read or she will mark you down. she can always tell when you just wrote something the night before and just printed it out and turned it in. she definately wants you to succeed and will do what she can to help. i recommend her for hopeful nursing students.
Read 5 plays out loud in class, and watch a film version of each. Also read "A Year in the life of William Shakespeare: 1599" which you need to understand a lot of the play's cultural references. Very fun, relaxed. Don't stress out on assignments, confused, she'll help. Easy to talk to other students. Enjoy the plays: you might learn something.
I loved her. She seemed strict on the beginning of the semester but she was the best English teacher I ever had. I really learn and I know how to write good MLA paper. Follow her instructions, advices and do homeworks on time!!! Take her if you want to learn! You will have to work but it is worth it. She is friendly and helpful.
Very good teacher...Below comments are exact! She knows the field. Took her class in summer. She did offer lots of extra credit. Do the work and you will get the grade you deserve! Highly recommended. Don't know if she is still using the Anthology book, but it's a short story book& interesting.
Best English professor I've ever had!!
AMAZING !!!!! By far the best teacher at DELTA!
She is awesome! She knows her stuff and will make sure that you take her class as seriously as how she will grade your papers. I love Mrs. Sheil! Her lectures are interesting and she's one of the best professors on campus.
Mrs. Sheil is a really good teacher. She inspires you to write your best and she has a huge passion for writing. I would highly recommend taking Mrs. Sheil!! I hate English- hate writing... but she really encouraged me, and I enjoyed taking English! (for once)
This is a great class. It is easy to follow, easy to catch up. Very little homework, easy weekly assignments on etudes. Reading is the primary work in this class, not heavy textbook reading, just Shakespeare, and one book about Shakespeare. Excellent teacher.
Accelerated 1D course was a little bit of a head case this semester because it was fast. But that's just personal preference though. Good English teacher, very passionate, and only take her course if your SERIOUS about transferring!
Mrs. Sheil's accelerated hybrid ENG 1D course was awesome. I learned so much even though it was a short time period. She is easily the best teacher at Delta College! I highly recommend her course for those who will take it seriously and are willing to work hard. She gives you great instruction and feedback, use it to your advantage. Goodluck.
I didn't think I would be able to keep up with the class, but I really put my priorities straight this semester. You have to be serious about this class. I actually enjoy going to class, I'm heard, and I actually like writing for once as well! She is genuine and really has a passion for teaching. She really inspires me. :)
She is a wonderful teacher. im going to take her ofr eng 1d. the 9week course goes by pretty fast. she practically helps you write the paper. if your read the books the essays will be easy to write. seriously LISTEN to what she says and you will oass. she wants EVERYONE to learn and pass the class...
OMG, this is the most pickiest professor ever... other students who is taking her class right now, I'm pretty sure more than half of them said she's a B... everytime she walks by everyone got all quiet.. know what i mean?
halarious, easy to talk to,will help in any way she can
ONE OF THE BEST INSTRUCTORS AT DELTA COLLEGE.I TOOK HER ENG 1A CLASS AND GOT B. BE PREPARED FOR WEEKLY ESSAYS ON CHAPTER BOOKS. SHE IS HELPFUL AND GIVES STUDENTS HER HOME NUMBER, PHONE NUMBER,ETC. PS: FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE SCARED OF PUBLIC SPEAKING, THERE IS JUST ONE MIDTERM ON THAT, GOOD LUCK:)
Never seen any professors like this. Started off okay and easy to grade. Now getting picky as ever. Regret taking her class.
I agree, she started out easy and all of a sudden she has gotten very picking at grading everything has to be perfect.
Awesome teacher! Hella funny hippie type. I took the compacted class. We had a paper a week. A book every two weeks. The books turn into your bible and u will annotate the crap out of them. Easy grader. Her online helper isnt though but he knows his stuff. YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO WRITE A PAPER. Otherwise it will be super hard.
Took her for a fast-passed class, paper a week, if came on Fri. she would usually give outlines to papers, have to come to class though, don't try if you're a slacker. Very helpful and one of the nicest and coolest teachers at Delta
Crazy, crazy, crazy lady... I ended up getting an A in her accelerated 1D course, but let me tell you...there was a lot of stress and sleepless nights with pressure from her to write the way she wanted me to write... I didn't think she was that much of a B**** like the post below me, but I sure as heck will never take her again! For realz tho.
Not the best professor in the world, but her accelerated college composition courses are do-able as long as you don't procrastinate and STAY ON HER GOOD SIDE. Make sure to write as relevantly, comprehensive, and error-free as possible and do all the eTudes entries and extra credit offered for EVERY FREAKIN' POINT COUNTS in order to get an "A".
This teacher reminds me of a psycho her grading and comments she leaves on your papers will prove it. She has favorites so don't cross her wrong or you will fail. I worked my butt off and just made a B.
Knows her stuff. She's tough, but also a teddy bear. Grades easy, just don't miss a class and do your work. Staying caught up is a chore, but that's because I took her accelerated class. Re "favoritism" comment: Hogwash. She is respectful and helpful to everyone. (Nicer than I would be sometimes.)
I took the accelerated 1A & 1D class--the class was invaluable.Yes, it is difficult. But, if you do everything Mrs. Sheil tells you to do, you will learn how to write. This class has helped me out in all my other classes!Favoritism? No!She is there for you, if you are there for yourself. Work hard, and she'll go the extra mile for you.Great teacher!
She's not a hard teacher like what most say, although she is challenging. But if you always do your work on time you WILL pass with A or B. I always turn in my work on time, which I got an A Cuz she always give u full pts if u do em, or to the most pts.. Altho I don't like this teacher as much, but I got through it, so it shouldn't be that hard :)
One of the best teachers at Delta College. Others may teach well, but Sheil is encouraging, organized, and extremely prompt with feedback. (She also has a sense of humor.) Pace yourself for her class, complete assignments on time, and you will do well.
I love this lady!!! I took the accelerated eng 1A and 1D. She was so helpful. I did sports so had to leave early some days but if you every had a problem that you needed fixed that night she gives you her cell number and she can help you at any time. She changed my whole view of teachers at delta I can say she is fun and full of energy. Love her!!
I'm in Professor Sheil's accelerated 1D class. I have high Bs on my papers but it's because Professor Sheil explains assignments very well. She's so spunky. I adore her. If you don't want to learn, don't take her. But trust me, you'll want to take her classes. Be intimidated by her red boots! =P
I'm currently taking her accelerated ENG 1D, and it's the hardest class I've ever taken--EVER. But it is so worth it. Easily one of the best professors at Delta. She's super hard and it's a lot of work, but it's worth it. She's passionate and really cares for her students and wants you to succeed. Do yourself a favor and take a class with her!!!
MRS. SHEIL IS AWESOME! I took the Fall 2011 accelerated 1d class. If you're a slacker, don't bother. If you're up to the challenge,I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. She's a wonderfully fun lady and a FANTASTIC TEACHER!It's INTENSE, but so worth it in the end. You'll learn alot.I'm sad the class is over. It's been the hardest and BEST class I've taken.
I just finished her accelerated 1d class and it was the hardest class i've ever taken! It really engaged me and made me work for my A. I loved it! She is really passionate about what she does and about her students. She is the very first teacher at delta to ever know my name. She takes a lot of interest into bettering us and I recommend her 1000x!
I took her accelerated class and she was wonderful! There was an essay a week but she worked thru it with you & she's super cool! VERY VERY Helpful one of the most helpful professors I know. Recommend her!
I miss this class! I also took the accelerated 1D class and it definitely took some hard work. She was super nice & easy going. I enjoyed her interaction with the class & she made sure that students fully understood the assignments. Put in the hard work she expects & you'll get a good grade.
I have taken Mrs. Sheil for Shakespeare twice. Once, was for a special studies class. I have to say she knows her Shakespeare. You can really tell she is interested in and loves her subject. She knows what she's talking about, is super easy to work with, and is understanding of personal issues Great teacher, would recommend her classes to anyone.
I was skeptical about taking Shakespeare, but her interest in the subject made the class interesting. Attendance is worth 200 points every 2 weeks, which is a bonus. You'll read the plays in class, and she explains everything. She is wonderful, I have only good things to say about Professor Sheil!!!
She LOVES her Shakespeare. She knows what she is talking about when it comes to Shakespeare and you will learn a lot in this class. Make sure to do the oline forums every week and you will do fine. Easy class
Very good instructor! Easy to talk to; manage&lecture her class very well; fair amount of hw and fair grade.
Paula is amazing! She taught me so much about writing that has made my writing 10x better! Her class is a lot of writing, and a lot of reading! Not the easiest but taking her class will teach you so much! Also very helpful!
LOVED THIS CLASS. Mrs. Sheil is a very smart teacher and she is very passionate about what she is doing. The Shapiro book is pretty boring, but is not a reason to avoid this class. Just keep up with your forums and quizzes and you will do just fine!
Best English professor I've taken. Took her accelerated course without realizing it, but in the end it was worth it. She is passionate about what she is teaching and in return this makes the class so much better. The books are needed since each paper is related to them some way. I would recommend her only if you can dedicate time to the class.
Took this class online last fall and it was great. It boosted my confidence as a writer and taught me valuable skills. Both the teacher and the TA were very helpful an responded to questions promptly. It's an easy class if you stay on top of assignments, but no late work is accepted, so don't fall behind!
Paula is easily one of the best instructors I've taken at Delta! She is extremely passionate about teaching and truly wants everyone to do good. Yes it is ALOT of work but this is college and if you put in the effort, you will become a better writer and learn useful things which will help you in the future. An A is possible with hard work
Not exactly sure what the previous person is saying as on Day ONE Prof Sheil guides you into creating your online accounts. Prof Sheil keeps the mood up ever day making the class very interesting with her witty comments and upbeat attitude. Everything about MLA and APA is explained in the syllabus. The class is fast but fun and highly recommended.
Great teacher. Passionate about teaching and genuinely cares for her students. A hard class, but you'll learn a lot. Just stay on top of the work! She makes English fun, which is almost impossible to do. Highly recommend her as a teacher!
Professor Sheil is an amazing professor who whole heartedly cares that her students understand what it takes to be a good reader and writer. She is quite frank, but very encouraging especially on essay assignments. She is upfront and honest and expects a lot from her students, not because she is mean, but she knows we are all highly capable.
I took the accelerated versions of this class. If you take this class and do not like it or have problems with the Professor, you have serious issues. She is wonderful and though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, you only get out of this class the amount of effort, positive attitude, and determination you put in. Good class, not an easy A.
Professor Sheil is by far the best English teacher I've ever had. Her accelerated 1A & 1D program is a lot of hard work. These classes are not easy As. She pushes her students to their full potential. APA & MLA formats are explained thoroughly. She makes English fun. Take Professor Sheil's accelerated classes, but be prepared to work.
Professor Sheil's class is very organized and she has a lot of enthusiasm about her class. She also has a good sense of humor and is not afraid to swear. But it is A LOT OF WORK since its accelarated. If you were taking two classes then this one, it would be okay, but no more. You will learn something every class.
This is eng 1d both in class and online. The toughest course to get an A in. Not easy if you are looking for easy go somewhere else. Way to much work for such a short period of time. Not worth it.
I took Professor Sheil's 1A and 1D class in one semester, and I learned so much. She is clear on her work, and she will help in any way that she can. I didn't realize that I was such a crappy writer prior to taking her class. Take her! You won't regret it! Received an A in both courses. Expect to WORK WORK WORK! It's college what do you expect?
I took Professor Sheil's accelerated 1A and 1D class. On the 1st day she comes of intimidating only because she wants to pick out the weak. Stick with it! It is a ton of work and VERY stressful but absolutely possible. I took two other classes with English 1A & 1D, and I received A's in both. I highly recommend that you don't miss any classes!!!
If you want a teacher that cares this is the teacher for you. She will meet up with you, stay after class, whatever. This is college so yes you have to put in the time. If you are looking for an "easy A," you don't belong in college.
Sheil is a great teacher! She knows all there is to know about Shakespeare. The class is very easy and fun. She's also very understanding and so nice! You have to read the plays out loud in the class. The homework is online; it's all easy and quick to do. The essays are pretty easy, too. She responds quickly as well.
Shakespeare was great! Assignments: reading 5 plays aloud in class, 2 quizzesplay, 1 quizbook chapter (Shapiro), 1 essayplay, 1 forum discussionweek, 1 soliloquy speech, 1 written speech (not oral), and movie days. Gives you great understsanding of the subject matter. Sheil has a lot of passion for the topic and knows what she's talking about.
Shiel was the best English teacher I ever had! I'm planning on taking her again for 1D. She is very nice and helps you out when needed. Its important that you speak up when you need help in this class. Her instructions are very clear and understanding. ;)
Paula Sheil is an AMAZING teacher. My father passed away at the end of the semester and she was incredibly helpful by giving me some extra time on assignments and the final paper. It was probably one of the hardest classes I have ever had but I learned a lot. If you want a teacher that genuinely cares about her students, then take her class!
Sheil is overall an ok teacher. She cares for students but can be rude at times. As for the assignments, they're a piece of cake if you know how to write! Class breakdown: Daily 50 pg reading of assigned book, 1 major essay that you work on throughout the semester and wrap up at the end for your final, and 2 presentations based on your paper
P. Sheil used to be a good /methods have devolved. Uses examples of student papers to teach in class, which involves belittling students present in class! She's insensitive & arrogant. Uses inappropriate language for no reason except to shock & because she can. No big complaints about the work, but she needs a new attitude or a new career.
She cares about if the students understand her curriculum.
She's a great teacher best English teacher I had her from 78b, just took 79, and now in 1a. She's very helpful just need to speak up if you need help, because she can't read your mind but she will be very helpful. If you don't know her then she might come off as rude or scary looking but shes so nice. Sometimes might seem like a lot of homework but it'll pay off at the end.
Awesome teacher! Had a lot of fun taking her class. Helped me get up from 78b to English 1A super quick! There is a lot of work, but once you create a routine, it's easily achievable to finish in a few hours.
This class requires a lot of work, so get ready to read. Some of the homework assignments are due online , and all your essay assignments must be turn in on a website to make sure there is not plagiarism. She is a very caring person and wants to make sure you improve your writing skills. I totally recommend her if you are a dedicated student
Professor Sheil's was an amazing teacher. She makes you work for your grade! There are a lot of assignments because this was an hybrid class, but with all her assignments she explains in detail how she wants them done. This has been the best English Professor I have taken. You will defiantly learn how to do APA and MLA before you finish this class!
I love to write poetry and wanted to expand my skill set in the field. This coarse was EXACTLY what I had hoped for and then some. Professor Sheil provides an at ease environment for everyone to be able to express themselves. All poets, creative writers, and lovers of the written art form will definitely appreciate this class!
Awesome professor, English 1A is a great opportunity to learn more about race and how misinterpreted it's been shown to us, or how we perceive it. Truly an eye-opening course on race. Her lectures don't even feel like lectures, more like conversations. "Textbooks": A novel and a fiction book, which were great. Light on the work and essays. Loved it
She is incredible. Most rewarding class I have taken. By no means is this class an easy A, you have to work your butt off for this class especially because it is half a semester. She cares so much for her students and can always make time and work with student issues.
listen to her, put in the work on getting your homework done and be on class on time. other than that, it's an easy A if you really put the effort to be a good writer. lot's of reading but they're all interesting books that's not boring except for maybe one. Also don't take her kindness for granted. great professor and a very blunt one lol
Prof. Sheil is the BEST prof. ever! She's is very blunt and straight forward with what she wants done. Prof. Sheil is very thorough and makes sure you understand the material. The class is only hard if you make it hard. There was a medium load of homework bc its a hybrid class. If you want to challenge yourself, then I suggest taking this class.
Not sure why she has so many good reviews because shes honestly rude as hell. I thought I would like her because she is honestly a good speaker and makes it seems like class would be interesting but when it comes to conversation/actually interacting with a person? Yikes. Dont recommend her at all, pretty of other wonderful professors
Prof Sheil is AWESOME! She is very straight-forward, so she may come off as rude to some. However, she is great at what she does. I hate English, especially writing papers and after taking this class, I have become a confident writer. There is A LOT of writing in this class!! So if you aren't willing to put in the work, don't expect an A.
Paula Sheil is Paula Sheil. This is one class that you will never forget. She is one of the hardest professors I have had in my life but she really does make you think critically. If you pass her class you can do anything.
She is really the most terrible. She has favorites, if she doesnt like you she will show it. She is the worst when you try talking to her individually she has big attitudes and is just straight up rude. I really dont know why she has good ratings. Dont recommend if youre bad or even good in English.
Honestly Paula Sheil is one the best professors I've ever had. Most of the essays you write have a criteria that is clearly explained in class. As long as your essays make sense and fit the criteria outlined by her grading rubric, you will have a high grade. Sheil is also an amazing person who cares very much about her students. She's just great!
Prof. Sheil was always available so you could ask questions. One of the most organized and thoughtful professors at Delta. My writing has become noticeably better from taking this class with her. I highly recommend this class!!!
I know its a Stockton themed course but holy hell is this excessive. Its difficult to stretch out essays and multi-paragraph responses about a topic that is so bare and dry. Professor is rude lowkey and piles on the work
Professor Paula Sheil is a great teacher. I can't express enough how positive my experience was. Following the completion of ENG 1A and ENG 1B, I feel that I am a better writer, and prepared for transfer to a university. Professor Sheil uses a very direct method of teaching and provides all the tools needed to succeed in her course.
Highly recommend! Takes the time to make comments on all assignments, so if you actually want to improve your skill then take her! 3 or 4 documentaries and read two 200 page books. Heavy on class discussions but they're not hard! Wrote 3 essays, the longest being 4 pages. Just don't procrastinate and READ FEEDBACK & you'll be fine
Professor Sheil is ok, she just does not understand the concept of work/school/life balance. She completely takes over all your weekdays and weekend with discussions, readings, lectures, and essays. If you want to feel constantly overwhelmed, please take her class! If you want to actually enjoy your life outside of school, look elsewhere.
They taught me not only what MLA was but how to construct my thoughts and emotions surrounding a topic and have them flow on the page. The work could be difficult and time consuming, but I can say with full confidence that I am a better writer because of it. I went from never taking writing seriously to being able to take pride in my essays.
This professor gives way too much homework! It is a insane amount. She assumes students only have one class. Get ready for an assignment every day. She grades pretty easy. However, the class is not worth it, because you get stuck with homework every day. If you want this class to take over your life then by all means take it.
Ok, let's start with the good: She grades very easily. Almost all my assignments got full points. She has all her assignments already posted so you can do it anytime before the due date. Now the bad: SO MUCH HOMEWORK THAT NEVER ENDS! Homework is literally due every day or every other day sometimes. This was seriously the worse 3 months of my life.
Sheil is a fantastic professor that will take the time to talk to you about assignments and is very understanding if you ask for an extension. The course load is very appropriate for an accelerated class. What you take in a 16-week course is condensed into 8 weeks, do not expect any less. This can be an enjoyable class if you really try!
Previous reviews fail to mention that typically Eng 1A & Eng 1B are 16-week classes that were condensed into two consecutive 8-week classes. All students were warned repeatedly on Canvas that these were very intense classes. Despite the difficulty level of these courses, Paula was always available to provide guidance on the assignments.
Before you take the course just know that it starts later which means MORE WORK. Yes, there is homework every day, but if you keep up with the class then it is fairly easy. There is a lot of reading in this course and A LOT of discussion boards. She grades essays very strictly but provides amazing feedback. She responds quickly and is helpful!
Weirdo fr fr
ENG 49C: She tries to get you to buy one of her past student's books. YOU DO NOT NEED TO. She posts five poems in a PDF to give students time to buy it. I never did, just used the poems that were on the PDF. A decent course, just was focused on exploring different forms which got annoying and dull. Hidden gems regarding basics are in readings.
Prof. Sheil's ENG1B is an intense course, but she's incredibly supportive. The workload is heavy, but the feedback is invaluable. unstuck ai was a game-changer for exam prep.
She lays things out clear. I personally liked her class it was very interesting the topics we went over never really bored me which made the essays easier to do.If you have a busy schedule you might want to consider a different teacher though because the work she gives out isn't hard it's just time consuming. You'll have many assignments per week.
I took the accelerated course and this class has a very heavy workload. I had to read 4 books and write 4 essays within 8 weeks. I was lucky that my other classes had light workloads because this class will take up ALL your studying time. She is very blunt (in a good way) and will drop you if you don't put in the effort! Not an easy A.
all 4 books were about 80$, you only learn about Stockton background. i recommend another teacher, she doesn't care about your grade or if you pass or not. doesnt give extra credit.
