Taught the 101 course at a grad-level pace and difficulty. Grades were purely based on tests and without extensive notes you will not pass.
She expected an unreasonable amount of work from her students and was not willing to back up her expectations with acceptable teaching. Do NOT take this professor.
While an A may not be handed to you, it is a college class. She expects you to actually learn the material. She is also very passionate about what she is teaching and very knowledgable about the subject, which I do not find in all of my professors which I found inspirational. Everything on the test she says in class, so just pay attention.
She's pretty easy. She chooses topics she likes that she is knowledgeable in, which make the class a bit more enjoyable. There are 3 tests, 6 quizzes, and 2 papers. She teaches through powerpoints, most notes are there but you should still take good notes. Class is mandatory. Her tests are pretty condensed but she curves. Quizzes are on Sakai.
She's a really nice person. But she wants you to know EVERYTHING. She lectures from the beginning of class to the end, and almost never lets you out early. She does have powerpoints and posts them. It's just a lot of lectures, and the tests are SO in depth. Only 3 tests and a few quizzes, plus 2 assignments. So if you screw up its hard to fix.
My classes were 2h long, but all you need to know is there, you dont really need the textbook. Also, she posts the PowerPoints online. You need to be present, though, the PowerPoints are mostly bullet points.
Almost everything you need to know she goes over in class, but the book would be useful for extra support as she skims over things. Attendance isn't required, but she does have a sign in sheet. The material itself is hard, and there is a LOT so she sometimes goes over things pretty quickly. Find yourself some study buddies and you'll be ok.
Her lectures are very long and a lot of information is thrown at you and it is not always explained very clearly. There threee tests and Her tests are very tough, detailed and in depth. So you will need to in depthly loom at class notes, read the book and the videos if you want to get a decent grade. Very hard for an intro level class.
Dr. Tomczak is very passionate about her area of expertise and incorporates her knowledge in this Env. Science class. She encourages students to participate and tried to make class fun, especially on Fridays. Her grading criteria is clear, and her lectures are clear. 2 short papers, several quizzes, 3 tests, 1 group presentation and a final.
Dr. Tomczak is a decent professor. Her lectures are straight from the powerpoint and does not include the class ever. Can be very boring, so if you feel like like not going? No worries! Attendance does not matter and she posts all of the notes later that week.
Paula Tomczak is a good professor. She really cares about the class and about the students. She is a little tough for a 101 level course but she is willing to help outside of class and go over things. We used an online text book and had online quizzes which had ups and downs. The tests get easier after the first one. Not a terrible core class.
Tests are extremely hard and worth so much of the grade. Other assignments are barely worth anything. No extra credit or anyway to save the grade. Way too hard for a core class.
She really cares about the class. There were around 10 quizzes, including a bonus quiz that was optional. On Fridays you do graded activities, so you only have to show up on Fridays. You're allowed to drop your lowest graded activity at the end of the semester. As long as you look at the powerpoints you'll be fine for the tests.
just do yourself a favor and don't take this class!!!!!! BORING LECTURES, HARD GRADER, STAY AWAY STAY AWAY STAY AWAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!
I took her for 137 and it was so easy. I thought this would be similar. This SUCKED. A lot more terminology and harder material. It was a big lecture class, not as small as 137, which is harder. Quizzes, 3 tests + final. You have to go to class because she does graded in class worksheets. She's a great prof, but this class shouldn't have 120 kids.
She is the definition of an average professor. As for the class: way too much online homework, boring class, and not very good at explaining much of anything. Form a study group with the people around you. How you do on Exam 1 will, more or less, predict your finishing grade in the class.
Tomczak was hard in a 100+ student environment, so I re-enrolled in a smaller class. Her tests are worth over 50% of your grade, so you are screwed if you aren't an expert. Her lectures are helpful, but not her study guides. She's nice, but tough and not very helpful/empathetic to the reality that many students are taking her class for core credit.
class is too big and the class is only lectures. class activities are very rare and the 3 tests take up a huge percent of the grade . study guides dont help at all either . dont get unlucky and get stuck in the class like i did !
Dr. Tomczak in my opinion was a good choice for UCSF 137. This class killed me and was by far my worst class, but Dr. Tomczak was helpful and if you put the work in, she will definitely help you. I failed both of the exams we had and by some miracle i did well-ish on the final and she bumped my grade up. The class is hard but she will help you!
She expects you to know everything she goes over on the slides. Like literally every little detail. This class brought my gpa down and I actually came to every class and took good notes. Try to avoid
If you care about your grades or GPA whatsoever, AVOID THIS CLASS. She's a nice woman, but this class was impossible. I never missed a single class, took good notes, studied for the tests, and still got a really bad grade in the class. Her tests are impossible to do well on. This was my only 100-level class, and it was the hardest class I had.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFS AT LOYOLA! Took her ucsf137 class and I am in her ANTH 101 class now. She is Super friendly, goes out of her way to make sure students know the material, gives interesting activities that reaffirm what is taught in class!
Class is mostly lectures with some group projects and discussions occasionally. Doing the textbook readings is essential for the quizzes and exams. I struggled in this class but Professor Tomczack is wonderful!
I like professor Tomczak so much I even enrolled in her ANTH101 class. I find her lectures and the material very interesting and she is very helpful. The material is not too tough as long as you really apply yourself and study for exams.
She's really nice and obviously cares a lot about anthropology. There's a lot of material to cover but she does a lot with the time she has and her lectures are really detailed. The exams weren't too bad but you actually have to study for them because they are super specific. Her class was so interesting that I added Anthropology as a second major.
This class was dry at times, but as long as you write down whatever is in her power points, you'll get by and know all the material that will be tested. She was especially great in the switch online and she genuinely cares about her students! The material is relatively easy, you just need to put time into it.
Professor Tomczack is one of my favorite professors. While the class isn't exactly easy, it also isn't exactly hard. You have to pay attention and do the readings. She expects you to learn all the material, which only makes sense... But, Professor T is amazing. She genuinely wants her students to succeed. Take this class, it's so worth it.
I loved Dr. Tomczak. She was sooooo nice and very kind to everyone. I swear i never heard one bad thing about from any of my classmates. Fair grader, however the tests are a little difficult but its because the questions are worth too many points. Like 5 questions wrong is a 87.5. So make sure you study. I recommend her 100%.
Professor Tomczak really cares about her students and the course subject. She treats all of her students with dignity and respect. Her tests are pretty much based on the lectures, so just take notes on those lectures. AND make sure you are taking notes on other things she mentions during the lectures - not just the points on the power-points!
As long as you do the assignments and study for tests you will do great. She drops the lowest out of 4 tests, including the final. We have a lot of little assignments throughout the term but they are easy and made to help you. She is also great during office hours if you have a problem with a grade or specific assignment.
Professor Tomczack is a great professor who wants all her students to succeed. She drops the lowest test score and sometimes lets students earn back missed points. The test and class are heavily based on lecture videos, so keep up on those! A lot of small assignments, but they do add up so don't skip them!!
Asynchronous class. Caring teacher she'll definitely help you out. Very easy class, watch the short 10 minute lectures. Weekly assignments and an option reflection that both boost your grade well. Some extra credit opportunities. Tests are harder than expected so fill out the study guides. Otherwise a super easy A if you just do the assignments.
Unsure why her rating is so low. Her instruction is phenomenal and you can tell that she truly cares about your learning. Classes are very manageable and she is very understanding. There is extra credit offered almost biweekly and she really appreciates her area of study. I could not have chosen a better science professor this semester.
I would recommend her!! The class was so stress free and I learned a lot. It was online btw. Super clear expectations which I really appreciated and everything was taught really thoroughly and her quizzes are very reasonable and if you pay attention to readings and lecture, you will do well. She's really great :)))
She is FANTASTIC! Highly recommend taking her. She is always open to helping and will offer you extra credit if you meet and talk to her. Exams were a little tough, but you do a group project which is easy.
Professor Tomczak is probably my favorite professor ever!! She wants to see you succeed and will do anything in her power to help. Shen offers incredible advice and is very passionate about what she teaches.
Professor Tomczak is so sweet and really cares about her students. Her tests are definitely difficult (there are four of them--no midterm or final), but if you prove to her that you're trying hard, she'll help you out. 13 weekly activities (super easy) and tons of opportunities for extra points; I'd definitely recommend her.
Dr. Tomczak really cares about her students, and it shows. Her lectures are very clear and organized, and she will make worksheets when students ask for them or even host review sessions outside of lecture and office hours when students need them.
She's really nice. This class is a bit more difficult than you would expect, but if you study more its totally fine. You get a notecard on exams. All she really does is lecture off of slides, so you won't miss much skipping. Exams can be specific, but the notecard helps. Easy weekly activities and optional reflections for extra points. Overall good
Professor Tomczak is amazing. She gives weekly activities as homework that she goes over in class, also gives weekly reflections that are optional for extra credit. 3 exams and an optional final to replace an exam grade. Her lectures can go on for long however, she is really nice and wants you to succeed. She gives a few quizzes but they are online
3 exams, 4 quizzes, text reading each week, weekly activities and reflections, optional final. if you participate and do your work you will do fine in this class. some of the content is a little confusing but very interesting.
Dr. Tomczak's a decent professor if you need a science core requirement. She always goes out of her way to make herself available, so take advantage of it! Exams were a bit difficult but she lets you use notecards on all of them. Easy weekly activities and reflections (the 4 quizzes were all online/open notes too) to round out your grade.
Great professor. She's extremely knowledgeable and passionate about anthropology. The tests are slightly more difficult than expected, but you get to use notecards and she drops the lowest test grade. Take good notes. This class was overall very fun & rewarding!
Really nice lady the test were pretty hard but you have projects and homework to balance it out.
Great choice for ENVS 101.She understands that it's a 100-level class and has expectations for you but as long as you pay attention during class you'll do fine. 3 tests and if you do well enough on those, the final is optional, weekly activities and reflections (helpful and easy). She made learning very doable and was kind and responsive. Take her!
Tomczak is a great professor. She really understands what she is talking about, and really dives deep into the material. Lots of points available to get a good grade, and even earn extra credit. Definitely take her. You do have to show up to class to receive most points though.
This class was really hard for an intro class. Prof Paula's tests were extremely difficult and confusing, and her lecture was a lot to process.
Professor Tomczack is so nice and she really wants you to do well. Lectures were very clear, and had a lot of information so you should read the textbook as well. Exams were easy if you study, and go over the material.
Grades are based on participation in discussion boards, class activities, and three exams. The final is optional if you do well on the three exams. Textbook is mostly optional because her powerpoints have all the required info. Her classes are mostly lectures but they're pretty clear. Professor Tomczak is understanding and not a very hard grader.
this class is WAY too difficult to be a core. i regret taking her class. her lectures go SM in detail and her exams are on stuff we barely talk ab and can't be found in the slides. the slides are very vague + she is condescending if u need help. a few extra credit opportunities but it's not enough to boost ur grade after the exams mess u up badly.
Prof. Tomczak is super nice! However, I do feel that her class was kind of tough for it being a 101--with that said, the material is lots of memorization. But she does provide study guides for the exams, and she does give the option to do a project over the exam for one unit. Overall I would take her, just be prepared to study hard!
This has been the most challenging class I have taken at Loyola, and it's a 101. The exams cover too much material, and it's very hard to memorize all the characteristics she requires you to know. She is a nice lady so I didn't say awful, but I would not recommend this unless you want a very challenging class that will probably lower your GPA.
Paula was a great professor! I really enjoyed the class and content. It was pretty lecture heavy and there was a lot of material, but if you study and use the weekly questions as a study guide, it really helps. She is willing to take feedback and is accessible out of class. I would highly recommend!
This is easily the worst class I've ever taken at Loyola University Chicago. The class is extremely lecture-heavy. Tests are multiple choice and worded extremely poorly. Would not recommend taking this class.
Without a doubt, one of the worse courses I have ever taken. The exams are extremely hard and do not at all reflect the notes provided and assignments we are given. A huge part of our grade is made up of these exams. I regret this class everyday and am urging anyone NOT to ever take this course if you want to do well and maintain your GPA.
You will set yourself up for depression and failure. Do not take this professor. Absolute worst experience and class ever.
Way too difficult for a 101 course and has very little testable information on the slides which she claims is to 'encourage students to come to class'. This ends up screwing you over if you miss even a week of class for the exams. She provides weekly study questions that aren't even relevant to the exam questions. Do not take this class.
I loved this class! I think some of the bad reviews come from not taking good notes in class and not being interested. You can't just rely on the slides, which forces you to study and really learn the material. She keeps things interesting and does a lot of engaging activities/EC. Not a blow off class, but definitely a very interesting core!!!
Do not listen to any good reviews on here. They're lying. Genuinely the worst class and so difficult for a core. There is no reason a science core should be this stressful and hard. Terrible lectures, slides, notes, and exams. Nothing will help for the exam unless you're an anthro major. Save yourself and your GPA, do NOT take her.
The exams were nothing like the study questions. I literally would study a week in advance and still do bad on exams. Office hours weren't helpful. She also gave her smaller section opportunities to do projects instead of exams but didn't give these to her larger section. I know someone that met with her about their exam and she was condescending.
This class was WAY too difficult to be a core class and was extremely heavy on knowing very small details from lecture. Dr. Tomczak was not accommodating when I was out sick and missed classes right before the midterm exam. She claims that the study questions help to prepare for the exam but I found them to offer no substantial help in preparation.
save yourself and do not take her. worst class ever. absolutely awful is an understatement. do better Paula.
Avoid this class at all costs if you want to maintain your gpa. Incredibly difficult for no reason, especially when this is not even my major. She's nice, but treats the course as if you're getting your PhD in Anthropology. Study guide questions don't help & lecture slides are disorganized.
Professor is a nice lady but she wanted us to learn way too much information for a 101 class. Exams were hard, avoid class.
One of my best courses at Loyola. You do need to study and engage with the material, which did not appear to occur at times in this cycle. Professor Tomczak does an excellent job with presenting complex topics in an understandable manner. I will miss the lectures, though I will avoid classes with such a large number of students again if possible.
Take her if you can! She is always there for her students and you can tell she cares. Participation is graded but you are given 3 excused abscences. There is a semester long project but you are supposed to work on it in class. Little to no work for outside class, except for the project and readings. The final is also optional. Love her.
Tomczak is great, made the class very easy and understandable but also not boring. All the exams (3 & final) are online and super easy. She gives you plenty of time in class to work on the group project which was really nice and chill. Final exam is optional, great opportunity for extra credit. Simple and perfect class to fulfill core requirement.
I really enjoyed ENVS 101 with prof Tomczak. Her class is really lecture heavy, but overall I feel the she explained the content well. There are 3 tests (and an optional final) that are all online/open note and a group project that you work on the entire semester. She is very understanding and willing to help students succeed! Highly recommend.
Prof. Tomczak was a fine professor but took this 101 class a little too seriously. You need to go to class bc you get 2 pts for showing up and participation is 20% of the grade total. There was a semester-long group project in which she would be picky about each topic when grading. However, for the presentation, you only had to present one slide.
I took this 101 class over the summer. I have taken other summer classes this 1 class was equal to 2-3 other classes work wise put together. We had 10 quizzes, 10 assignments, and 2 exams in 6 weeks. She asked very specific questions or reworded the actual definition of something so it was confusing and made that the answer. Do not take her.
I'm sitting in her class right now. Not fun. She lectures the entire class and most of it is reading off the slide with terrible ad-libbing. Listening to her lectures make you feel like you know more about the topic than she does. However, online tests and the class is cash. It's just the actual class time is so, so, so boring.
Dr. Tomczak is a really great professor for ENVS 101. She really cares about her students & makes an effort to be available often through office hours and email. The class is not hard, graded by participation, small group projects and three exams & a final (which is optional if you did okay on the first three exams.) Almost entirely lecture based.
She is super sweet and cares a lot about her students. The lectures were super entertaining and interesting, but includes lots of material. What to study for the exams was unclear. She drops one 1/4 exams and has easy weekly quizzes.
Dr. Tomczak is so kind. She has a great sense of humor and genuinely cares about her students. The exams are open note/online and you do not have to take the final if you do well on the other 3. Half of the semester you work on a Group Project in class. Never any homework. Exams are multiple choice with 1 or 2 short responses. Highly recommend!
I Thought 101 was going to be an easy class, but no. There is so much material to remember for tests and the final; it's ridiculous. Additionally, the questions on the tests/final are so specific that you'd have to put in a month's worth of studying for one test to get a good grade for it; there's no work, so your overall grade depends on it.
Don't take this class as an easy A, but its really not that bad. 4 tests (drops the lowest), 11 quizzes (drops the lowest), lecture style class. However, if you go to class, take notes, and maybe rewatch a lecture or two in addition to studying you should be fine. Tomczak wants to help you, go to office hours if you have questions.
She's a good professor and is well organized while also directly stating what she wants. However, her exam questions were so specific. I didn't know what to study for the exams other than lecture material (which is A LOT). Good class, but I'd say a little too much for a core requirement. If you have to take it with her though I would, she cares.
She makes this class so hard for literally no reason, its a core class not a major class. Your grade is dependent on minimal items. You have weekly quizzes based on lectures and occasional videos. The tests are really difficult and don't follow course structure. Be prepared to STUDY hard to excel in this class.
she is a nice person BUT she takes this class wayyy too seriously. her test have nothing to do with the reviews she gives. overall the quizzes are easy but the exams will not be what you studied. she takes attendance really seriously. her and her aid will walk around the room during exams. if you are taking this class as a core i don't recommend.
She was an ok professor, I don't recommend taking this class for an easy A. It can be an easy class but only if you show up to class every day, take notes, go over the study questions every week, and even watch the recorded class videos. Study guides/review questions were not related to the exams at all though.
Honestly don't have much to say abt her as a person. The class itself is incredibly boring and attendence matters because there is a semester long group project that you have to work on in class ONLY. Even if you're sick, you have to do the entire days work of the group project alone. Do not buy the textbook it's useless the tests are take home.
I had her for both Envs and Anth 101, and she was a wonderful professor both semesters. She really cares about her students and wants everyone to do well. The material for Anth 101 was just difficult to understand, I don't recommend taking it for an easy grade. The material was interesting, but its not an easy concept.
If you're like me, and could care less about science, this is the class to take. Class is straight cash, show up and its impossible to fail. Online tests if you show up. No final. She is lecture heavy but has absolutely no idea what she is talking about. I probably knew more than her, but that doesn't matter because you don't need to learn anything
Really spectacular professor. super clear and grades well.
Takes this class way too serious for a core class. Her exams are all in person on a lockdown browser and have absolutely nothing to do with the study guides she gives. Her lectures are extremely long and she essentially just reads off the board. Wouldn't recommend this class at all to anyone unless you're looking to lower your GPA. not worth it.
Class is lecture based with infrequent student participation. Lectures are interesting, and there's always a lot of material covered in a day. We were graded on (easy) weekly Sakai quizzes and 3 tests + a final. I would have done better if I had gone to class more often. She records lectures and posts slides online. You don't need the textbook.
The other reviews had me lowkey terrified to take this class but Dr. Tomczak is great. There are 4 exams and lowest is dropped, weekly quizzes, it's a very straightforward class. Very lecture based but she posts all the lectures online. This class is actually pretty easy while doing the bare minimum
This class is so hard for a core its almost unrealistic. Its graded based on 4 exams and 11 quizzes 1 quiz gets dropped and your lowest exam gets dropped. The study guides dont help and she reads off of the board. Take someone else if you're not passionate or knowledgeable about this subject.
This class is extremely difficult for a core class. She is genuinely a kind professor and means well but her study guides are not helpful what so ever. Her tests are one of the most difficult tests i've taken at loyola (im a junior.) To get an A on a test I firmly believe you need to study 2 months in advance. Save your gpa please do not take.
Everyone is right about her, you get 3 tests + final (all in-class lockdown browser). You were able to use a notecard for every test but the first and feels like 85% of her study guides aren't even on her exams. Even with studying, it got me nowhere.
Very smart professor, but class is too difficult for a core class. Boring, so much information, tests use lockdown browser, she is passive-aggressive. You can use a notecard for the exams, which is fair, but its still so much for a 101 class. Ive always loved anthropology, somehow this class made me lose interest.
For this class being a 101 class, it's too hard. Wow there was a lot of work needed for a core class. Tests reminded me of APES from high school. Take with your friends if you can becuase there is a lot of group work.
She is a very kind and understanding professor. I am an anthropology minor and I found the class very interesting. Tests are hard if you do not study, but she gives you a notecard on every exam. I got As on the exams by just studying a couple hours the night before.
Paula is a straightforward professor. Show up and get 10 points. Study the slides and score well on exams. As someone who is not a stem major, this class manageable nor a burden to my regular schedule.
Don't rlly need textbook, three exams, 10 take home quizzes, in class activites for attendance. Honestly, just go to class and you'll be fine. No trick questions or anything just take good notes and we get a cheat sheet. I actually loved this class and happy I took it for my science core.
A+ Professor! She's super nice and super patient when it comes to not understanding a concept. The textbook isn't required but good for extra studying. Weekly quizzes, very short and very easy. 3 exams and an optional final exam (you're allowed a notecard for each). Just follow her study guide to a T and you should be able to pass all the exams.
GOATED class TBH. attendance is a little participation quiz every class. 1 quiz a week for HW, do it in class with her and she will help you. dont get the textbook its free online. listen in the lectures and you'll get everything you need to know. study guides are a bit weird but restructure them and ur golden.
