Such a pleasure every morning. She took the time to make sure we were interested in the course and wanted to teach us stuff we wanted to learn. I would like to have a slumber party with her. Maybe she will let me call her PJ? We'll see.
she is a great teacher espicially when teaching about sex. lol she is very enthusiastic and loves her job! thanks for being a great teacher
She's great. Multiple choice are a bit more confusing than I expected but she's just so enthusiastic! I love profs who are actually happy to be there abd teach. Her lectures are well structured and [well this course is just very easy :P] and organized. Me likes! heh heh She's so sweet.
Very interesting course - MC's were harder than I thought - labs are good. SHE is so CUTE! So bouncy and happy in the mornings - great professor - organized lectures, puts everything on the web for her students. I loved having her first in the morning and as my first lecture at York U :)
SHE IS GREAT!!! Amazing prof and great helpful person. She is unbelievably nice. You can approach her with any concerns or questions, and you could see your tests if you wanted to. She is so nice, give you over head, writes the notes that are important out and puts everything on internet Take this!
WOW! GREAT PROF, AMAZING COURSE! Paula is the BEST...clear, easy lectures...never boring...always easy to follow along...videos are interesting....definately recommend this course to anyone..CUMON WHY WOULDNT YOU TAKE IT?? THANKS PAULA U R THE BEST PROF AT YORKK
She is very sweet and funny. Paula is very knowledgeable and presents the material very well. Lectures are very clear and sometimes amusing. She is very outgoing and flexible to individual needs.
Excellent prof! Very enthusiastic about biology, and it is very refreshing. Easy to approach, understanding, and clear in lectures. Only one thing, her mc tests are very difficult.
AMAZING! Most incredible prof. @ York! I love her enthusiasm and love for what she's teaching! I can't believe she doesn't teach any other classes, I would definately take them! I think most of the prof's @ York should sit in on one of her lectures and take notes on what makes a good lecturer!
Awesome prof! She posts notes and audio for ever lecture! So it's never hard to catch up if you missed a lecture.
Paula was great! She posted all her lectures to help everyone follow. SHe was enthusiastic and really funny. I thot it was especially cute when she brought candy for everyone after winter break was over. Wat an awesome prof!
It is really helpful of her to post the audio and powerpoints online. She is also very enthusiastic and cheerful in class. Her enthusiasm makes the boring parts of the course easier to get through. Her mc tests/exams can be confusing. The labs are boring but are easy to do well in.
she's very funny, enthusiastic and so energetic. Her tests are bit confusing, since th m/c exam consists of 5 choices, with 'b and c', or 'c only' (you know what i'm talking about) it's annoying, but if you study your notes really hard enough, and pay attention to your lectures, you'll get through no prob.
What an amazing prof! She can make any topic interesting because she's so passionate about it. She's very approachable and explains concepts crystal clear. Her tests are tricky, but she explains things so well that if you study you should do well. Great class.
'Good things come in small packages'She's small but has lots of goood things to say.One of the better prof's at york. Good lectures, interesting topic, Cares about how she gets her point across.
not so much fun this course, they jsut use the name of the course to attract student "biology of sex" but it's all about genetics
Great prof! Funny, enthusiastic and she knows what she's talking about. Very clear and approachable. I don't like the class but I can't deny she's a good prof. If you like biology/science, you should definitely take her class.
Great Prof. makes material interesting and doesn't take herself too seriously. I'm not a big biology fan, but I am a fan of PJW!
dr. paula jo wilson is a great prof with a good personality. i especially liked the fact that in some of her lectures, she'd post something on powerpoint and say "well...you don't need to know this" or "this isn't important..blah blah blah". gonna miss her for the winter term.
interesting course. It was a good way to start my mornings because she was always pepped up and in a good mood. The labs were intesting and fair depending on the TA, but she makes sure Dr. Wilson would visit labs to make sure everything was in order. Over all the course was a faily good course.
Interesting lectures posted on powerpoint for those who miss it, but not always very clearly explained. Not very approachable individually, don't expect her to care about her students. Labs are a lot of work for what they're worth but easy marks if you put in the effort. The winter term (diff lecturer) far superior to fall.
PAULA TRIES TO MAKE LECTURES AS NON-BORING AS SHE CAN, MOST OF THE TIME IS WORKS. KEEPS EVERYTHING UP BEAT AND TRIES HE BEST TO TEACH WITH CLARITY.
She is a wonderful teacher. Extremely up beat and very excited about her job. Her exams are pretty easy and her lectures are easy to follow. She is also very easy to talk to.
Very good prof. her classes were very interesting, she joked and shared relevant annecdotes. The materials used (videos and texts) really helped enrich the course. Tests are easy as long as you pay attention in class.
Really made the class fun and interesting such an amazing prof I actually work up 3 days a week for 9:30 to go to class (thats saying something)
An interesting lady. Course materials are generally easy and explained in the simplest ways possible. However, there is a change of professor in the course for winter term, who will succeed Paula and turn the class to utter hell. Do NOT take NATS1660 if you have no or limited knowledge in Biology prior, or you will do poorly on the course.
Awesome! She teaches well and makes sure you understand the concept and is very approachable and her tests are VERY fair, shouldn't have a problem if you study what she tells you to and go to lectures. I failed once and took bio again with her and did awesome! SHe also lowers the total of tests if she feels students did poor on a question
She's interested in what she's teaching. Tests are fair. She is approachable in terms of questions. Generally good woman. Only thing I would complain about is that she speaks kind of quickly in lecture so it's hard to keep up with what she's saying at times.
Great Prof! Really interested in the material that she's teaching and that really shows. I would recommend reading the textbook but focusing more on the slides and the lectures.
she is really lost with the material!! personally i did everything by myself attending lectures were truly wasting of time!
She is horrible! I agree she is interested in what she's teaching but she can't convey her info to the students as she literally mumbles when she speaks and speaks soo fast that its impossible to understand her! Her tests are hard too, take Dr. Nevilac's class she is much easier than Paula!!
Great Prof in my opinion! Those who say she hard to folow must be the ones who talk throughout the class. Provides help when needed and cleary loves to teach.
She is actually an amazing prof who knew what she was talking about. Her tests are tricky but, she prepares you for the tests and upcoming years. In my opinion, if you do what she tells you to do you will be more than fine. Attend all the lectures and try to sit in the front row. Make sure, you do your readings and FOCUS ON THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES!
Smart, funny. Genuinely cares about her students and is passionate about the material she teaches. Huge lecture halls can be a problem because some students really don't care and only come to attend for clicker questions, so it gets loud, so sit in the front few rows. Best of luck :)
She is great great great! Pretty useful lectures, though she does move fairly quickly towards the end of the course. Really great prof though. She puts in a lot of effort.
She is an amazing prof. She is always jolly and looks out for her students in terms of clarification. Do focus on learning objectives because her tests are based on those. In other words, come to class...the textbook is just there for a little support. It's good to take detailed notes in her class! Her tests are tricky but the exam was fair.
talks way too fast and sometimes mumbles.
She's a small lady, so hearing her in lecture can be difficult if you don't sit up close. However, her tests were fair and she is very passionate about what she teaches.
She says she will do something but never does, when you go up to her. I don't understand what she says in her lecture. Her notes are not useful. She just keeps making circles to explain the concept.
Fantastic prof. She might mumble a bit, but if you sit close to the front rows, you can understand her clearly. Very passionate about biological research -- her lectures prove it! Clicker questions are quite thought provoking. Generally an enjoyable class. If you take notes on the assigned readings and do the learning objectives, you'll get your A.
Nice Prof. Sit in the front, do your readings and reading quizzes, don't take much notes in class, just follow the slides with her and make sure you understand what she's saying. Do the note taking at home, from the textbook and maybe the lecture slides. I relied on the textbook and used lecture slides to review. Go get your A. :)
Lectures are a must! Clicker questions provide a useful tip of what kind of questions you'd expect on the midterms and final, and they count for marks as participation. The prof is very friendly and approachable, but during the lectures, your best bet is to sit at the front so you can hear the prof clearly. Easy, easy A - so long as you read.
Great lecturer. She explained everything clearly and concisely and was ALWAYS open for questions after lecture or during office hours. Do make sure you sit near the front of the class.
Talks way too fast, not very helpful when approached.
BIOL 1000 should be very easy for those who can recall most of the information you learned about molecular biology and genetics from Grade 11 and Grade 12 Biology. The professor is very helpful, although she may be hard to hear in the lectures. Clicker questions help a lot, so do attend those lectures! Easy A as long as you read & take notes.
Dr Wilson is a no-nonsense type of person. She is extremely professional & busy & this unfortunately (sometimes) affects her ability to get back to you on time. The course itself is hard work, listen to how she instructs you to study, DO IT HER WAY! trust me it works. She has a good voice and great ability to explain. Overall a charming character
awesome professor!
Good lectures and she's really helpful, will make sure that everyone understands.
Amazing lectures, will make sure that everyone understands the basic concepts :)
Cheerful prof and optimistic. She helps when you ask for it and even without asking she explains it to you in detail without wasting time.
she is very good at explaining things in lecture
Nice prof overall. Felt like she went a bit too fast on respiration and photosynthesis, but then again it was all about seeing the "big picture." Tests and exams were very easy but labs were time consuming and tedious. I didn't read the textbook. I just focused during the lecture and made sure I understand the clicker questions. Got an A+
Did not really explain the concept to well. Talked to fast. And tests were HARD. If you can avoid than do so
Fantastic professor. Taught a MILLION TIMES better than my Grade 12 Biology teacher. Lectures are fun, clear and informative. Tests need studying for sure but they are fair for sure. Keep up with your readings. Don't cram dudes.
This course has a lot of material and the tests are not easy so you do need to work hard and keep up with readings. Paula is a great lecturer.
She is a nice lady and really knows what she is talking about. This course consisted of very heavy reading, and she expects you to know all the details! Midterms and exam were on the tricky side.
She's funny, clear, creative and very interesting to hear. Yeah.
The only flaw Paula Wilson has when it comes to teaching course materials is that she can be a bit of a fast talker in a quietish volume, and most of York's lecture halls make it so that it can be hard to hear. But rest assured, her lectures are simple to follow, and her tests as easy as long as you read the book. Easy A!
I found that only sometimes she was really great at explaining. Someday's were more difficult to follow and makes notes from because she was jumping back and fourth and speaking quickly. Overall I really enjoyed the class and loved the clickers. I found this class easy because my grade 12 bio teacher was awesome, so I was able to coast.
She's a good professor and can explain things thoroughly, but the tests can sometimes be difficult. Hard to hear her when sitting in the back section of the lecture hall. She knows her stuff.
Great lecturer, take the advantage of the lectures.
Amazing professor, teaches very well, extremely clear. Tests are decently hard, but if you study you can do really well. Lectures are interesting. Would 100% recommend.
She's the best! I loved her, she was always willing to answer my questions when I approached her. Her lectures are great and interesting. Make sure you print the slides so you can follow along. The best way to doing well in the class is to follow the learning outcomes and her slides. Tests are okay if you know your stuff, no tricks.
She is an amazing prof. She does not read off the powerpoint and she gives vivd illustrations which students are able to grasp concepts easily. She is very nice and does her best to make things fair for her students.
Easiest biology course ever. She even admits to dumbing down the material to ensure everyone does well (first midterm average was in the high 70s...)She tends to go on unrelated tangents during lecture, so you don't miss too much if you skip, but it's probably best to go. Overall, very recommended!
Great bio professor. Tests aren't too hard and paying attention in class will definitely help. everything is posted onto the moodle if you need notes and overall pretty good
She is one of the best teachers I ever had! Super nice and crystal clear on what material will be on the tests. Her tests are not hard if you studied and her classes are really interesting! I would definitely take a class with her again.
Biol 1000 requires a lot of reading. Do all the assigned readings and keep up with the lectures. Midterms are straight from LO's like Paula says. Weekly quizzes on moodle and clicker questions help boost marks.
She is honestly one of the worst lecturers I've had, she's so hard to follow! Granted she tries, but her lectures come across as being unorganized in terms of following a clear point path, all in all, I can genuinely say that I only went to class to get those sweet, sweet participation points.
Very good at explaining and drawing things out
She went at a great pace and I can actually say I learned a lot. That being said, don't come to class expecting to write notes from the power point while she talks! Either print them out or write on a tablet that way you can take notes of what she actually explains. The tests and exam were fair if you actually studied. DO THE READINGS BEFORE CLASS!
I heard this was her first time teaching the nursing microbiology course. She did amazing; her PowerPoints are very empty but go to class because she writes you notes on those PowerPoints! She explains so well and she picked out the perfect nursing related concepts. She really slows down if you dont understand. She also takes feedbacks for tests!!
Tries to engage students, can ask questions. slides have visual but no writing to inform whats on slide. Does participation questions during class for marks so have to attend. Weekly online quizzes on reading. Good Learning Outcomes that help to study. Moves quickly and sometimes rumbles so can be confusing. Not really accessible outside of class.
Paula seemed to be very scattered in her lectures making it hard to follow at times. Her tests are not hard as long as you follow her learning objectives. Her tests scrape the surface of what the textbook says so don't waste your time going in depth. Just use her slides, in class notes and learning outcomes to guide you.
Dr Wilson was an alright lecturer. The lecture content was explained clearly, but sometimes a little too fast. Her tests were strictly material from the lecture slides, so don't waste your time reading the textbook. Her clicker questions were also very helpful. Overall, a kind, caring prof who really tries to engage her students.
Paula is a very hardworking professor. I find that she is a great lecturer but only if you have the desire to learn and propel in your studies. As long as you understand the textbook word for word, then you're bound to get an A+.
She is a very inspirational professor and creates and piques everyone's interest with amazing questions. However, her lectures can be a little scattered; throwing the students off. Overall, very nice and approachable as well.
I really enjoyed all of Professor Wilson's lectures. She talks really fast so at the beginning it's overwhelming but you learn how to catch on to it pretty fast. Reading quizzes are annoying but when the test comes around you realize they were pretty helpful.
Really good prof. Pay attention in lecture and stay on top of the readings for an easy A. Midterms are certainly not easy, but fair if you attend lectures. She genuinely cares for students and is willing to answer questions whenever needed. If we had more profs like her the world would be a better place man.
Paula's lectures are very dense and packed. It's a lot of writing in class but she covers everything on tests and exams and is very efficient. She rarely goes on tangents and uses every minute of lecture time. Some people don't like her, but personally I think she is a great prof if this is your first bio course at york
Skimmed through the material, rather than actually teaching it. Instead of going over topics everyone was confused by, she would say "you should know this from grade __". Didn't connect the different topics together, she treated each topic like something new. Failed the class by 2% and refused to do anything about it.
Dr. Wilson is a very smart and knowledgable prof. She definitely knows her stuff, and she cares about her students success. If you want to get an A/A+ in her class, read the textbook, take good notes during lectures(the slides barely have anything on them, or better yet record the lectures) and study for tests from the learning outcome.
Lecture notes are useless if you don't go to class. They only have illustrations and are useless if you don't attend the lecture.
Slides are done so well you can ace the test off of them alone. No tricks in the test either, absolutely everything necessary is covered.
Doing your readings and going to the lectures is all you need to do well in her class. She holds no tricks up her sleeves on her exams, and is very helpful if you ever have questions.
Lectures are extremely engaging and unlike most, Wilson does not simply regurgitate the textbook. It is a bird course if you commit ONE hour each week. Make sure you do all reading in advance and attend lectures and you are guaranteed an 'A'. It will take a bit of effort for an A+, but achievable if you really work for it
Prof. Wilson is an amazing professor. She is very caring about her students and makes sure that everyone gets the point before moving on to the next one. Interesting lectures overall and she jokes around sometimes too !!
Absolutely loved Mrs. Wilson shes so sweet and someone you can go to even if you just need to talk. She has a kind heart and is such a talented teacher. Her class is very diverse in that we have class discussions, debates, occasional movies, and interesting coursework. I look forward to this class all day.
Professor Wilson is a great person but a terrible lecturer. She lectures like she's talking to herself in the mirror - doesn't see that everyone is falling asleep to the fuzzy sound of her muffled voice in the mic. Forced to be in class for participation, but in reality gained absolutely nothing from attending the class - know the text and get an A
Absolutely one of the best professor I've ever had. Super passionate and engaging with her material.
Dr. wilson works hard to ensure her students are achieving the learning outcomes. There are no surprises on her test - if you study, you pass. If you go to class - it helps. She is fair and approachable. I would love to have her again as my prof.
Really good professor! Nice & explains things pretty well but she speaks very fast sometimes. very approachable and friendly, and very helpful during office hours!
AMAZING, passionate lecturer with great slides. She doesn't record lectures so I recommend recording them yourself. Supplementing with textbook isn't necessary but helpful; know the slides inside and out will guarantee A/A+ (make good notes!). Tests are extremely fair including the short answer portion. I highly recommend Dr. Wilson.
She is the worst prof ever for Biol 2021. DO NOT TAKE HER. She rambles at stupid pace and you won't absorb a single thing in her lecture. Her midterms are ok but she always includes questions that she never talked about!!! Her exam was brutal. We all failed :(
You don't learn in class, expects you to master the info alone&go to class as review. Only pics on the ppt. Can't write what she says in time, there's no reference to what she said bc there's nothing on the slide+no recordings. I'm OK w going to class, but what if I need to review the info after? Unfair to non-auditive learners. I don't recommend!
Wonderful Prof! Midterm/exams are all based on material learned in class -absolutely no surprises. That being said, you need to UNDERSTAND concepts, pathways etc. instead of just blind memorization to do well on short answer questions. Work hard and you will get an A
she is very good
I have had this prof for 2 courses in my undergrad so far - 1001 and 2021 BIOL - she is the WORST prof I have ever had in my whole life. She is unfair on midterms, expects you to memorize the entire 2021 textbook and her power points are so unorganized and vague that it makes you want to cry. She talks WAY too FAST. DROP if you have her! WORST PROF
She talks way to fast in lecture and doesnt record them. Her lectures are all over the place and the final required you to know very small details. The only good thing was having clickers which is a mark booster
Write down EVERYTHING she says and you'll get an A+. No surprises. Don't even need the text.
Please, if you're going to speak at a rate we can no longer understand and we're telling you to slow down, just record your lectures so we can go back to it; it would benefit everyone greatly. Some students are also sick and we can't get to class and having that lecture recording not available really screws us over.
Prof. Wilson went way too fast and even after students asked her to slow down, she didn't. And her mic is always muffled, half the time you can't hear what she's saying! Lecture slides were hard to follow. The tests aren't necessarily hard but require an insane amount of memorization, and the final was even worse. Appreciated the clicker qs.
Tests require you to know a crazy amount of details... BIOL 2021 could be a year long course with the amount of stuff they want you to know. Final will screw you over no matter how much you think you're ready. Prof went way too fast and her slides were a mess.
I would strongly advise to avoid her at all costs, her exams are strictly from the textbook, she skips over background content and expects you to remember it from high school, she doesn't explain anything properly. She talks extremely fast and does not record lectures. Write down everything she says if you even want to get a C but honestly drop it
Heard that the previous years had even more content to learn than we did, but they received cheat sheets. We had much less content, but no cheat sheet - so she had to speak fast, unfortunately. I recommend recording her lectures and reading the textbook sections that correspond with the lecture - heavy on the memorization. I think she bell curves.
Going into the course I already expected it to be difficult - yet Prof Wilson did not make it any easier. She has no concept of how to teach things simply, instead she mixes things up, speaks way too quickly, and doesn't even provide recorded lectures. The lecture room was CROWDED only for less than mediocre teaching ability. Do not recommend her.
Don't understand why she's given such low ratings. BIOL 2021 requires a fair bit of work. Understanding the big picture will make life a lot easier rather than memorize little details at once. She is a bit fast, but I found reading material a couple days beforehand helped me to cut down my studying time immensely. Just study smart!
one of the worst lecturers I've had at York. Speaks way too fast, test questions are very unclear. Had to go above and beyond the material she gave to us to get the grade I did.
Avoid at all costs.
the best prof teaching Biol 2021 by far. she teaches really well and wants her students to get good marks. takes her time to explain but sometimes can speak too fast since there's a lot of material to cover in the course. highly recommended.
I just love Dr. Wilson. I actually missed her for couple of weeks when new prof came in biol1001. Her teaching and lectures are important, interesting and attend them to get good marks. Dont hesitate to ask her questions in office hours. She is the best.
Barely attended class however kept up to date on readings and memorized material but exams seemed to barely have nay info I memorized, doesn't give much info on slides either, midterms are worth like 28-32% and about 2-3 of them plus final which is ridiculous. Don't take her for Biol courses, barely gives feedback or answers questions.
She thinks we're machines that she could easily pump information at a very fast rate with minimal information. Sit at front if you want to record her. Test 1 was 22% and test 2 23% tell me if that even matters or makes a different. While exam was 40%. Let's not even talk about the assignment grade worth 10%, which she ended up giving us only 5!!!!
She speaks at such a fast pace that it's so difficult to keep up and comprehend what she's trying to get across. The slides were useless since they're mostly figures and she claims that it helps with our learning to have wordless slides. The final exam despite being online was extremely rushed as she cut the the time limit from 3 hour to 2 hours..
She does not record lectures and speaks so fast if she did we all would've ended up with higher grades. there were 4 short answers on her midterms and 8 on final. the MCQ s are confusing. after pandemic she recorded lecs and WE FINALLY UNDERSTOOD her after 1 sem. not a bad prof and seems like she cares about you but doesn't care about your GPA.
Talks really fast, makes mistakes in lecture sometimes that gets us confused. Shes really nice and explains things well if you go to her office hours. Her midterms arent easy but they were manageable as long as you studied hard. Final exam was online due to covid, she made it really difficult and we barely had time to finish. You'll survive though
Little things in the lecture she briefly mentions will be a written question on the test, always rushing during the lectures, you are better off learning from the textbook by the outline of her lectures. Make sure you know her "learning outcomes" because she doesn't teach it all during lectures.
She's very nice but her lectures are sometimes all over the place.
Does not care about her students at all. This course is very difficult and she just makes it even worse. Talks way too fast in the lectures I barely understand what is going on. Tests are way too hard for the material we learned in class. When you email her about any concern she does not care!! Avoid!!!
During the pandemic, everyone gets stressed out. Idk is because of her or the department, giving us tons of work to do. AND her test was ridiculous, whatever how you answered, you never fulfill her/their expectations to earn full mark on the test questions. Not just only her, Dr Julie Clark also terrible about this. Doesn't care about her students
Paula Wilson does not care about you as a student or your success and achievement. You will find yourself wondering why she even became a professor at all with her very poor teaching skills. Her powerpoints are all images so if you're hard of hearing or a non visual learner, she is not for you. Very uncoordinated, unaccomadating, and uncaring.
LITERALLY COULDNT BE WORSE. SHE GIVES SO MUCH WORK. I barely have time for my other courses. With all the time I put in this course, I still cant manage getting an A. Her MCQ are so confusing. She speaks super fast and asks for too much detail for her tests when she hasnt even gone over the topic. 1 word to explain her class. NIGHTMARE.
Wilson only cares about herself and is only teaching you what she thinks is important to herself. Weekly quizzes that won't teach you anything, just stress you out. VERY content heavy course which makes you panic and forget everything. Her style of teaching is rambling and info dumping. An absolute nightmare.
She looks very nice, but she is terrible. She makes the tests extremely hard, and out of topic. What she taught in the lecture was basic knowledge of the PCR Reaction, then in the test, she told us to design an experimental procedure in PCR Reaction and cut the DNA template ON THE TEST!!!! RIDICULOUS!!!
You are required to learn, on average, 5-6 chapters of the textbook per midterm. The test comes around and the questions are irrelevant to what was covered. Your work on the test is scrutinized to hell, without any feedback. She thinks ''metacognition reflections'' help us. She doesn't have a clue. Atleast we know what her indoor garden looks like.
I took her class in the Winter 2019, and she is a terrible professor who doesn't give a crap about students. But she did get a teacher's award last semester, which is absolutely laughable since she tries really hard to copy Tamara Kelly, but Tamara Kelly actually cares about students, and you cannot copy empathy when you don't have any.
She gives very unclear questions on the midterm unrelated to the topic covered in class. Read the textbook, watch her lectures yet the questions asked on the midterm confuses you and want lots of little details. She does not consider that some of us was not able to fully finish gr 12 because of covid and does not consider ELLs when making the test
She's teaching fine I can say, but it doesn't mean her students will be happy with her. She and the Bio Department don't care how it hurts the student's heart and the GPA. The only words can be commented on in the evaluations, RIDICULOUS, AWFUL, and some dirty words
I stopped attending her lectures because of how useless and unhelpful she is. She won't answer your questions, she won't even answer her own questions she put on the PowerPoint, it genuinely seems like she's very bored herself and just gets a kick out of making students suffer. Disgrace of a "professor."
Unclear questions on the midterm, and unrelated to the topic covered in class. Read the textbook, watch lecture recordings just somewhat help. THE TEST IS TOTALLY A FAILURE TO STUDENTS, they'd better make it as an assignment
She's honestly amazing. Great explanations, really cares about her students and makes time to answer questions. The lectures are however more supplementary, the textbook readings are a must to get an A+. She's very lively, kind and approachable for questions so don't hesitate!
As a cs major, taking bio as one of my foundational science was an absolute nightmare. There is a non-stop flow of work with disorganized labs along with info dump lectures. I wouldn't blame the teacher as I found her quite nice and approachable but rather the department for assigning such horrible TAs to mark and create test questions.
To start off, her lectures are the worst things I've ever seen. Since she didn't care about the mental health of our class, we often had a test on Sunday, and two labs due the day after, and, of course, more assignments due on the day before the test. . I literally received zero feedback the entire course. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
She is very passionate but I swear she made the tests confusing on purpose. My lab mark carried my average. Zero feedback. Asynchronous lectures made me feel disconnected from the course. Would study my butt off for exam but the questions would be based on tiny details. Don't take her if you value your sanity.
I was hoping for an A in this class as I did well in AP bio in high school. However, her slides barely contained any information and she talked kind of fast. The tests were extremely difficult and they take forever to mark them (3-4 weeks). I still haven't received my reappraisal request that I submitted in October for test 1. Read the textbook!!
SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO TEACH. If you are unfortunate enough to end up in her class. Be ready to teach yourself for the entire term. She LITERALLY just sits in front of a PowerPoint and says the information in the most confusing way. She doesn't seem to understand the idea of slowing down while talking either. THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVERY HAD.
I hate bio now and its because of her. They had to bell curve every test. I don't think we're the problem...
Do not take this course if you care about your well being!!!!! Her and the TAs are the worst at grading. It seems that they want you to fail considering the difficulty on the tests. Her lectures are boring, lack detail and explanations of material. Be prepared to teach the entire course to yourself!!!!!! Also good luck getting feedback :)
Take this course pay the tuition and be ready to study by yourself. the professor post lecture videos, helpful but so vast doesn't at all feel like an introductory course and in the final exam its gonna be a nightmare she will have you test each and every topic covered the whole term.
Useless professor, posts some lecture recordings basically reading off a PowerPoint and adding some random and irrelevant fluff that'll confuse you more. A student posted a question on the forum discussion board and Paula said "what do you think the answer is?" so get ready for that kind of unhelpfulness. Horrible teacher, horrible person.
She is the best professor for Bio, she does weekly quizzes that are based on the lecture vids and a little textbook, the exams are textbook heavy. The multiple choice is repeated. The course was completely open book so everything is easy to find, everything is explained well and I have never misunderstood anything yet. Pretty sure I have an A or A-
Want to fail yourself or send yourself crazy during Covid, go take her
Doesnt matter which prof do you have, the course content and the bio department is totally sucks. Totally waste students time
I found that Professor Wilson was a solid choice during online school. She is very helpful during the q&a section and will hint at possible exam questions. The TA's mark extremely hard tho so keep that in mind when crafting answers. It is extremely textbook heavy so read it and take notes! If it's open book base your answers on the textbook.
Great course! As long as you keep up with the lecture modules and quizzes, show up to live sessions (and write down the questions she poses) and do ALL of the readings, you should be just fine :) It's very clear that she cares about her students and is passionate about teaching!
It's so obvious shes writing herself good reviews, pathetic. She is the laziest, rudest, least helpful prof I've ever seen. She wont answer your questions and will reply to your emails 3 weeks later. Doesnt interact with the students, she doesnt even look like she likes bio. Dont take her, ever, please. Dog water.
If you make sure to stay on top of lectures and reading materials you should do great in this course. The TAs took a lot of time to mark things which was kind of annoying but overall, if you're willing to to put in the effort I totally recommend her.
She was a hard grader and did not give good lectures. Other than that she was fine.
Reads slides during her lecture videos and doesn't even test on what she presents most of the time. Will take forever to respond to emails and doesn't even give you a proper answer when she does.
Dr. Wilson is a good professor, lectures sometimes seem long. Tests more focussed on the textbook readings and were fair, no surprising questions. Dr. Wilson is a good professor who answers questions well.
I honestly loved prof Wilson. Many people did not like her, and I believe its more to do with the content in BIO 1000 than her. In general, the course has a lot of information but you will do well if you truly understood the information from grade 12 bio. Sometimes her lectures felt like forever but besides that shes caring and tries her best !
Just horrible
Literally she won't answer your questions. In tutorial, a student ask a question and she replied saying "what do you think?". Bruhh, she did this to multiple students and she only likes when students suggest more challenging questions to put into exams/midterms. Take her if u want to teach yourself.
Her lectures give me anxiety to watch. She talks and teaches very fast and does not care if you understand or not, and she makes the straightforward concepts complicated to understand. You always have to rewatch her lecture and it takes you hours to understand her lectures and take notes. She will test you from every single words she mentions.
pretends to care about students well being, but does not. puts material on the midterm that we learned 2 days ago. FYI: Only one midterm and then final exam, that's it.
She marks so hard. She never ever replies to emails and it’s so frustrating. She pretends to care about our mental health but she’s the reason we suffer. Terrible prof.
Awful professor. She doesn't care about you at all. Her teaching is garbage. Her tests are way too difficult. Do yourself a favour and don't take this course with her.
Made this course 100 times harder than it’s!! Don’t take it with her under any circumstances!!!!!
0/10 would not recommend. DON'T DO IT !!!!!!! Lectures are hard to understand. Makes everything hard. She does not like you or care. Just a lot of theory. I can not begin to give the thousand reasons why you should not take this course to her. JUST DON'T DO IT !!!!!!!!
The worst professor ever. Her lectures are just not useful at all. Her assessments are too difficult. She often comes off as quite rude too. Do not take her for the love of god.
Do not take her. She is the WORST professor. Not only does she talk really fast, she explains to us like we are experts in the material. Her lectures barely have any words and are basically only diagrams. I cannot express it enough how much i recommend not to take her
Words cannot describe how bad of a professor she is, but numbers can 0/10.
Dr. Wilson is one of the most condescending people I have ever met. I have no idea where all this sarcasm and rage comes from but she genuinely makes it clear she does not like the students or care about them. She talks to most people like they are stupid. In the beginning of every class you are motivated and leave very upset due to her comments.
WORST PROF EVER ! doesn't care about students and doesn't teach properly. you'd expect someone whose been teaching bio forever to know how to educate people but NOPE. do not take any course with her unless you want to torture yourself because ur gonna be on your own. you never know what to expect from her!!! this course is gonna haunt me forever.
Considering she is the head of the department you'd think she'd care more about how students did on midterms, quizzes and finals. She can't teach well, she struggles to simplify things and rambles a lot. Cell bio is hard but she makes it fail worthy.
Prof Wilson is not that bad, she just goes over alot of material really fast, and tries to simplify but can end up making it more confusing. The textbook she uses explains things clearly with alot of pictures and diagrams which help make hard concepts easy to understand.
Does not reply to emails
Prof Wilson will lecture at the speed of lightning and expect you to catch up with her even though the material is so heavy and dense. On top of that, she will take forever to give back grades and does not answer emails under any circumstance. Avoid if you can.
Heavy course with a lot of material and is fast pace. Paula is passionate about biology and tries to help, but she often goes into grave detail that confuses many people. Lectures and slides are sometimes confusing and disorganized. If you attend lecture and put effort, you will be fine. Average course, 7/10.
Just bad. Don't take her, save your money. Her explanation makes everything confusing and test is extremely hard.
Shes amazing BUT DONT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. one of the many departments that adapted horribly to the online format, took the same class a previous winter term and the tests were literally insane phd level impossible. In person, shes amazingly coordinated, relies on lecture material for test questions(which were easier) and was very approachable.
Horrible
i loved her lol. she definitely understands how to engage students to learn the course content. the in-lecture MC questions were very helpful and i actually really liked that the pre-lecture recorded videos were meant for note-taking and the actual lectures were essentially just Q&A sessions
Paula plz stop asking your kids to write fake reviews! We all know how bad your courses are
Terrible prof makes everything hell for students who have a busy outside life and text book is a pain to get, I still don't know where my money went(get Yorked)
I am not enrolled in her course, but attened a few lectures overall, she seems like a very caring and nice prof. From the few lectures I did attend, it seems she does rely on iClicker quite frequently, and sometimes wont tell you if the answer you selected is correct or not. However, she does a decent job explaining concepts.
She goes through every topic in a very organized and detailed way, it's very easy to understand what she's talking about. Although, it's required to participate during classes and it's apart of your grade, I don't think it affects it that much if you cant go to 2 or 3 classes. It's not too bad and tests are difficult enough to not be too easy.
She is so caring and genuinely wants everyone to do their best. Always open to explaining if anyone needs help.
I've taken a course with this professor before. If I had to choose between taking another course with them or studying for an extra year, I'd choose the latter. Their classes involve heavy lectures and difficult tests, so I'd recommend avoiding them unless you're ready for a demanding workload.
very badly structured slides makes it hard to know whats going on as well as doesn't tell the class to be quiet so u can't even hear what's going on
DO NOT TAKE HER LECTURES! I would say that her teaching style is quite awful. She doesn't know how to teach and doesn't even know the proper answer to the questions, because she doesn't know the concepts properly, and makes you confused with her teaching. I only attended her lectures for class activity marks, and I self-studied.
She would get side tracked A LOT during lectures, she doesn't explain concepts well, she says "this shud be a review for u guys" "u shud remember this from gr.12"NOT ALL OF US CAME FRESH OUT OF HS! Her tests are not based on the practice questions provided. Avoid her as much as u can. I had to teach myself this whole course and it cost my sanity.
i was expecting the worst when I looked at her reviews, but shes actually decent. tests are fair, lectures are great. spends too much time on iclicker questions IMO. final exam was tricky if you're not 100% confident in all of the topics.
Don't do it if avoidable
Couldn't tell you what all the bad reviews are about. Dr. Wilson is a great prof who speaks with passion. She makes it very clear what topics/types of questions will be on the exam. She always makes time to answer student questions. Its very easy to follow along during her lectures, dont even need to read the textbook. Just rewatch the lecture rec.
Talks fast, boring lectures, lots of textbook pages to read, not great at explaining... The only reason I passed is because I knew most of the content from grade 12. She also spent the first lectures talking about opsins and eyes, even though they weren't part of the course! Attendance is tracked with iClicker, and lectures are always recorded.
organized but the main problem is she talks fast, also Mastering biology quizzes are a good practice source for exams but are a little bit time consuming and you must really be prepared and study well before taking the quizze, overall if you are not bio major or don't really get along with bio, I don't really recommend her
She is very intelligent and thorough in her lectures, so attendance is vital. There are quite a few chances to bring up your mark in her course through additional quizzes and surveys. She is extremely helpful.
Wilson is great! She taught very well, meaning I did not have to read the textbook. If I still had any questions she had regular office hours or I could rewatch the lectures. Wilson does try to keep the lectures interesting, and occasionally asks for feedback so she could improve. I doubt I will have her again, but would be happy to have her.
If your the type to self learn and study this would be for you, don't miss a lecture you will fall behind, not a bad prof she's just quick and the information is a bit boring, go into this lecture with a basic understanding of Biology. Good luck.
If you understand her lectures, you can easily get 100 on the midterms. She makes it really clear what you don't and do need to know. Also very good at explaining. The only thing is that she talks a bit fast, but it doesn't bother me because she's very clear. Her lectures are also recorded so it's easy to go back.
This professor is abs too bad!! I don't recommend to anybody take any course with her. Her teaching style was too bad as that is not related to the midterms questions and she just read the slides(as her slides just go through pictures!!). Also she would not respect to answer the questions through email as she answered like 2-3weeks after it!!!
Tests are easy if you recall Grade 11/12 biology; otherwise, do not take this class. She explains new concepts, assuming you already know them. While she suggests reading the textbook to prepare, the volume is too high to fit most schedules, making it difficult to succeed without prior knowledge.
