One of the worst math teachers I have ever taken. She was unorganized, had an attitude when trying to ask for help. She spent more time covering HW than actually going over material. She grades unfairly on test. I guess its understandable b/c it was her 1st yr. teaching.
Horrible teacher. Do not take her, she doesnt even explain the material to you.
Worst teacher I've ever had, she doesn't review for tests properly, just expects you to memorize every detail and gives you material she never taught you before on tests. Avoid her like the plague.
I'm not sure what everyone else's problem was with Paula. She is the most organized math teacher I have ever known. She always knows exactly what to cover, and she is methodical in her teaching method. She has been teaching for years in high school. Don't expect any useful exam prep. You better know how to study on your own, or you won't make it.
obvious newbie to college teaching. she says she doesn't care if you do your homework or not yet constantly nags every single day for those who don't. extremely dull class. i know it's math.. but still.
WORST PROFESSOR I've ever had. She goes on nagging rambling rants of superiority! Discourages students from asking questions by giving nasty attitudes making them feel stupid. She's mediocre and discouraging. There are no incentives with lab hours. Extra credit is out of the question. If you work hard you'll get the same evaluation as the lazy ones.
Horrible teacher. She teach easy question in class and then in Exam u were like r u in what class? Most of my class mate doen't like the way she teach. it was so confussing. Do not take her unless if u r so smart in math and u have to so much time to spent with tutors. never organize and alway we have to spent 5 min more. Not recomedet for anyone.
If you don't like math a lot, I would recommend for you to take this teacher. She skips all of the sections that you don't need to learn. If you have taken math 71 recently and then take her class, you will have an easy time. Requires a bit of studying but that's any math class.
she's horrible. Trust me.
she's helpful and she hard but not that hard if you study and do the work and of course show up to class you'll be ok
Im not sure why everyone doesnt like Paula. I thought she did a really good job at teaching the material and she was helpful. granted you had to go to her office hours in order for her to help. but she always helped us with questions during class as well. i think she is a good teacher. and i would recommend her:]
shes horrible...first time i fail a math class...she does not use the book u use course compass..you will fall asleep in her class. shes not clean on the material...
She's cool , i was in math 160, she did her job. at the beginning of the course, those graphing material is hard, stupid student should should just pay more attention. toward the end, material is getting ezier. i got my first exam C, 2nd w/ a B. but i did good on final, she gave me a A.
I've been in her class for a couple of weeks now and so far she is my favorite math teacher i have had in awhile. She goes at a good pace, explains EVERYTHING, and see super understanding. I like her a lot and hope to have her again in the future!
I war really just reviewing the stuff in this class. No textbook required. H.W. gets done online through coursecompass website. Quizzes have like 5 questions and she lets you do the practice exam online with some points of extra credit towards the actual exam if you get above 80% on the practice. Powerpoint lectures are online too. She's helpful.
Paula Young ROCKS!!! We?re at the end of the semester and after struggleling with math in the past I now love it, regained confidence to go on to higher levels of math, and actually really enjoyed it. She is firm but flexible when necessary. She?s extremely patient with some students but without forgetting the class curriculum.
She's horrible at teaching..and to top it off.. BORING
She is very clear and helpfull. She explains everything so it is easy to understand. HW is online.
This class wasn't the most interesting class but she is a very good teacher. The course work is done through coursecompass.com. She goes through things at a steady pace, and this is the best grade I've EVER received in any math class. I would take her again, and I recommend her to anyone.
her lecture is pretty clear and straightforward. homework is easy and it's online. no textbook needed. quizzes every week. Offers extra credit if you complete the study guide with a B or higher. Only thing is that it's online and takes FOREVER! LOTS of extra questions that aren't even on the actual test.
One of the best math teachers at Mt. Sac. Very helpful and can break down very complicated topics so they are easy to understand. If you pay attention, take good notes, and study, you will do great. There needs to be more math teachers like Prof. Young at Mt. Sac.
I am currently in Professor Young's class. Half way through the class and I am very happy with her. She explains things very well and she is very patient. The only thing I don't like is doing homework online. Other than that, it's a great class. If she teaches 71 in the spring, I'm taking her again.
Professor Young is wonderful. She is very thorough and explains well. She is always available for help during her office hours and is super friendly. There is a lot of work, but homework is turned in just once a week (online). Would have preferred a book, but I would still definitely take her again for future classes.
She is one of the best teachers I have had!
She was a really good teacher. I suck at math and i got an A in her class. Homework and practice tests are online so no text book needed.
She knows exactly what to cover and it's extremly important to make use of her notes cause it covers all the questions in the exams and quizzes. She explains things well. And she is kind. If you do the things she requires, you can get a good grade.
If you're looking at her previous bad reviews in 180, ignore them. It was long time ago. She is nice and willing to help her students. The class wasn't hard despite the fact that she takes off points for missing details in exams and quizzes. She tried using online textbook & HW in my class, and it was not bad. Study hard, an A isn't impossible
I just love Paula, and she is so nice to students. I know at least 10 students got an A in our 180 class. If you want to learn; choose her.
If you really want to learn math, i prefer Prof. Paula Young. She knows what her student should know about math 180. She prepares her student for Math 181. At begging you might think you have taken wrong prof. but believe me, its worth taking her.
Paula is one of the most kind and sweetest professor you'll ever have. She explains everything so clear, she is very organized, and she prepares you extremely well for the next course. She is always willing to answer questions and help. Such a great professor.
At first, I was annoyed how picky Prof Young was when she graded, however, as result of it, she made me a more focus and conscious math problem solver. This prepares you for 181. Grading policy is fair and notes are taken on pencast-great tool! Prof Young is extremely helpful and has a great personality who cares. I got a an A! Recommend!
Professor Young was an extremely hard professor when it comes to grading exams. One thing washer inability to teach more complex problems. I would say she is very nice, but can not teach concepts well. She does not go over homework questions and her notes are by a pencast that does not address the harder problems in hw.
she shoved too many materials in a semester even though she could NOT cover it all. she would skip over some things after explaining one example and tells us that she will be posting the rest of the notes online, essentially telling us to learn the rest on our own. My suggestion is if you can't cover it all, then don't attempt to shove it.
I was terrified for stats but Paula was awesome! Calculator for everything & rarely makes you remember formulas. Always willing to help & very understanding! Not an easy class by any means! keep up with the hw, do the extra credit & go to office hours & you will do fine! She really does everything she can to help her students pass!
Its been years since I've taken math and a lot longer since I've been good at it, but Prof. Young changed all that. Took her for the first class in the Statway courses and she made it so simple to understand in a way no one ever could for me before. I was terrified to take math but now I'm starting the second half of Statway extremely confident.
I'm not very good with math and I tend to struggle with the material. If you're the same, I suggest you do not take her. She doesn't make the material interesting; AT ALL! Her study guides don't help very much and the points for the hw, she makes you do, are ridiculous. DON'T TAKE HER!
Did not learn anything from her. She evens yawns when teaching the class and even says that she is lazy to teach for 2.3 hrs so that is why she teaches almost everyday for 1 hr. only. I do not recommend her at all.
She is pretty nice and friendly but the quiz and exams are kinda hard... do not really give extra credit opportunities... but if you are good at calculous you will be alright.
math isnt my strongest subject but she made class simple and clear. you never have to take notes because she hands out packets, which you fill in. Gives clear examples of what she wants & if you do it you get full points. (shocker there) She assigns homework every class so just make sure you do it & study hard for the tests and you'll be good!
Nice lady, but a horrible professor. If math is not your strong suit do not take her. Overloads you with new info. before a quizexam. All quizzesexams are not mult. choice. Reviews are useless, most times quizzes are only 3 questions and is very crucial you do good on all of them because getting one wrong will get you a low grade. Scatter-brain
I took Professor Young's Intermediate Algebra Math-71 and in my opinion she has been the best math teacher I have had so far in math. I really learned a lot in her class. She is patient, friendly, and helpful. (I suck in math)
She's great with the time allowed but if you want an A I'd recommend getting a tutor. Commit to devoting time to practicing lots of problems from the book. Wonderful professor but you need to do a lot of outside work simply because the material is difficult.
Pay attention in class, do all the homework (book assignments and online assignments), and do the study guides and you should be fine. Naturally the class isn't going to be easy so you have to make an effort, but otherwise I liked her style of teaching. She taught you everything you needed to know for the tests.
She's a good professor, she gives you handouts for the notes. The only problem is she is very unclear on what to study for the final and some test. And all of the homework was done online, which is a very big part of your final grade.
Many people complain about her 181 class, but I think her teaching is fairly decent. The course material hard, so study instead of blaming the teacher.
I read reviews about her and she sounds better on paper. Very short with students in office hours. No make ups even in case of an emergency that happen to me BTW. overall shes average but wouldnt recommend.
Professor Young was very clear in explaining the material. Expect to do online and textbook homework, which are both very helpful. Study material and exam will be an easy A
Awesome teacher! Everyone told me stats was hard(pshh). Professor Young makes it incredibly easy! Hands out notes for every lecture and study guides that resemble the exams EXACTLY (So DO THEM!!). She'll replace your lowest exam grade with the final exam grade if you do better on the final. EASY class, just don't be lazy! Study...
The material felt rushed and the tests didn't reflect what was taught in class. She has office hours which are nice, but you don't feel like you're understanding the material. It helps that she types and prints notes for you, but you're still left feeling confused after class. Expect to study a lot or switch a teacher.
She is a very confusing professor. He notes are easy to understand but it does not reflect what is in the text book. Especially the test are pretty hard. They do not go with what she teaches. Nice lady but avoid.
She'd be perfect if she didn't make those mymathlab assignments into hw assignments. They're so abundant, remedial and time consuming. The only reason people get those questions wrong is because they're trying to skip through them. They don't even help prepare you for the textbook hw which is often harder. It Just feels like an extra set of notes.
She treats students like they're still in high school. Assigns so much HW then complains about students just copying from the solutions manual. Maybe we wouldn't have to if she didn't assign 40/50 problems every week! She expects us to make her class a priority. Most students take more than one class! Busy work doesn't help us learn. Avoid her
dude she's hip
All her lessons will be taught on her ipad which is annoying. She is on a set schedule for the year so if she's running out of time she will rush through the lesson. There is hw everyday and its online, even if you enter the right answer sometimes is will mark it wrong. Save your GPA avoid this class.
Hard, but 181 is hard under anybody. She gives you notes to fill out as you go, awesome! However, she is really strict on grading, not as much partial credit as some other professors, and her tests are HARD! Usually tests are as hard or harder than difficult homework problems. Gives a good amount of EC but its a lot of work. Would take again.
Always nice and seems to care about the students.
Young is a Calc nerd, and has a good sense of humor. I enjoy her morning ritual of asking students about their weekend or upcoming plans. As for teaching, she teaches from an iPad and prints notes for all her students. She cares about her students success, but dont expect to get an easy A because she's a strict grader.
you will not leave that class with ought the lesson fully explained. don't be afraid of asking as many questions as you want.
People might think Professor Young is a tough professor for 181 but the class is just hard in nature and you will have to struggle if you want to succeed in this class. I have taken other math and plenty of physics courses and whenever it came down to material from 181 I was never hesitant on my answers. 10 out 10 would take again.
Paula was a great professor, Even though I got a D she is well worth taking. I should have clearly put more time into studying but she gives you all the necessary tools needed and much more. Take her, shes corny but cute.
i loved her class , didnt missed a class but if you need to leave early let her know she will give you notes by email or any take home quiz or let you know the homework. she explains step by step and ask for an questions before moving on. I would totally take her class agian. i was hoping to take her class for a higher math.
Would not recommend taking this professor. Though the printed notes and homework are convenient, they do not come close to accurately representing the difficulty of the exams and quizzes. Granted 181 is a very tough class, but this teacher does not do a good job of preparing you for the questions she expects you to answer on her exams.
I honestly don't know what the person below me is saying. Yes, her class is tough because the material is tough. There will be A LOT DROPPING as well. However, make use of her office hours! She really tries to help if you don't understand something. Besides, she is a generous grader who tries to give as mant pts possible. She deserves better rating
Extremely fair grader but no EC. Lectures will sometimes be a bit rushed but professor will answer any questions. Exams are harder than the homework so they require you to dedicate a lot of time to practicing extra assigned work and maybe even watching online videos. Take advantage of the tutoring resources and you can easily succeed in this class.
Her lectures can be spotty and her tests are fairly difficult compared to homework. Lectures on her iPad and notes are printed. She expects a thorough understanding of Calc 1 and seems to be against giving refreshers for students. If you're not good at math, don't expect to pass the first time. Overall, she's a decent professor.
Prof. Young is very caring and works with students. Her tests are very difficult and very few students passed them. On the other hand, her quizzes are easier and help to boost your grade along with the HW. Math 181 is a hard class so be ready to work hard. I would suggest taking Young only if you are a math major and not if you need an easy A.
Uses Aleks and I hate it!! Doesnt let you move on to a problem unless you get it right so you can be on a problem forever if you dont get it. Also its $100!! Assumes you know stuff and skips steps. Daily quizzes. If you struggle with math then dont take.
Professor young is fantastic, in terms of lecturing and providing a solid understanding of the material. My biggest criticism is that the exams can feel disproportionately difficult in comparison the homework and quizzes-but not TOO much. Also, lectures can be rushed some times. Hard class in its nature - not fair to blame her for that.
Professor Young may be passionate about math, but she is an awful professor when it comes to it. She is not helpful, and very boring. If you are a visual learner, especially when it comes to math, I would not take her. She also cares very little about her classmates actually passing her class. Save yourself the grade, and don't take her.
Professor Young was alright in my opinion. What I didn't enjoy in this class was the lack of engagement between student and teacher. She goes through the chapters rather quickly, so we at time cover 2 chapters in one day which is too much information to retain. Sometimes her explanations are hard to understand. Treated as a self-taught class.
For me she was too hard. Plus one day i came to class and she said "ok we are skipping chapters 5-9 and we we will start on chapter 10. You don't need to know the chapters that we are skipping. We will come back to those at the end of the year for review". I was SO CONFUSED. I had to drop the class!!!
I loved professor Young. She's very organized, structured, and to the point. She explains everything step by step and is very clear. There's a lot of homework, but it really helps to practice and retain what she covers in lecture. I wish she was teaching 71 to take her again.
Pros:she is quite caring to students. She gives answers for homework and notes on canvas. Cons:you have to watch a video before each classes(very confusing and boring); lectures can be spotty; quizzes and exams are HARD, as she loves to give you those challenge questions; do not expect extra credit. Unless youre very good at math, dont take
Posts homework solutions on canvas but a lot of times they contain errors which causes unnecessary confusion & made calc 2 harder than it already is (this happened QUITE often). Exams aren't THAT hard she's just really picky on grading. Everything needs to be extremely clear/detailed. Cant even do simple algebra in your head without losing points.
She was the hardest math teacher I ever took. She never let us use notecards on our quizzes or exams. She expected us to just remember all the formulas. Exams are harder than the homework and worksheets. So you have to spend hours studying for the quizzes and exams.
She's a solid choice for a teacher. She is slow, despite being a support class, but she likes to be sure that you understand. She gives thick packets for homework and she gives fill in notes. She's very nice as long as you communicate with her. Don't be scared to ask questions!
The lecture is easy but homework, quiz, exam are hard. You need to do lots of extra works. Read the book. It will help.
Professor young is extremely picky and gives a massive amount of hw no matter how small the lesson is. She DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. She isnt passionate about teaching. Her test count for 50% of your grade so be warned. I strongly recommend you find another professor for your math requirement.
she can be helpful but she is queen condescending. gives a heavy workload, so make a lot of time! all her work is what she tests you on, REALLY STUDY !! she throws you off with wording
I suck at math in general. Thought this class was gon be easy bc I took it 2 yrs ago senior year of hs. Worst choice ever, had to withdraw. Lots of homework. Notes, homework, quiz, exam and repeat every other week with no break. If you're really smart at math go for it, but if it's your weakness, then I recommend trying to find another professor.
DO NOT TAKE HER.. you have to sit there brain dead watcing HER videos just to complete the assignments. i can not look anywhere else to find answers you HAVE to do it HER way OR ELSE. this is why i think she is USELESS as a TEACHER. at LEAST let me FIND my OWN way to GET THE ANSWERS INSTEAD OF RELYING ON YOUR BORING VIDEOS... lame teacher.
I took her class for Math181, and can say that she is a tough grader. She has a step by step solution for getting to the answer which can work against you during the Exam. She reduces points from the exams even if you get the answers right but don't do it her way. As a up coming teacher, I believe she should not be so adamant on the little steps.
I would recommended not taking her. Math 110 is really easy class but she makes it difficult by giving you a lot of homework. She also very picky at grading and will do her best to give you an F. She acts like she want to help you but she really don't help you and through a lot of stuff at you at once. 4 hours long videos to watch every week.
Professor young is a nice lady who cares about her students. She assigns a lot of homework and videos every week(4 hours a week of videos). Tests are every week and must know material to pass. Will spent lots of time doing homework and studying if you want to pass.
I have failed stats 3x until now, she is heavy on Hw but its because she wants you to really learn the concepts and thats great for someone who isnt good at math. She is very encouraging, incredibly kind and really cares about her students. I would take her again in a heart beat. If you struggle with math take her class and dont give up.
Make sure to have every little indicator and show the work the way she wants it shown. Exam reviews have a disclaimer that they do not include everything that will be on the test. Told us that if we did not understand the material after 8 hours studying that we needed to study longer. Would not recommend her if you work full time.
i would say that if you genuinely wanna pick up the concepts fast, and if you have PLENTY of time, then go ahead and take it. but with my personal experience, i felt that i barley had time to breath. if you dont have time to watch multiple 30 min-1hr long vids every week, hella worksheets, and tests every week, then dont bother
It was a challenging class. She gives out so many papers, a packet for notes and a packet for homework. Too many long videos to watch and you have to make sure to pay attention to the videos or you will be lost in class. Honestly most of her teaching is through the videos. Throughout the semester many people dropped.
Unless you love watching multiple hour-long videos as a requirement of your homework, extremely picky grading criteria, and several packets worth of homework, then I highly suggest this class. She will mark you down on test unless it's exactly worded the way she wants it. Save yourself the headache and drop this class.
Prof. Young really cares about her students. She wants you to learn the math and will try to help you pass. Make sure you really have a good 180 prof because you need it all memorized to pass in 181. She gives the full answers to homeworks that you have to check so you can learn from it. Study early for exams and watch all videos.
I enjoyed taking statistics with Professor Young. She gives students notecards for every test to help which was great. The only downside of this class is the note-taking and homework. She gives you packets with many pages, and keeping up is a bit hard. Other than that, I'd strongly recommend taking her class!
If you struggle in math I would highly recommend taking her. She breaks down the concepts very well and focuses on working on problems in class. Grades very quickly so you get feedback. Is very open to questions and helping you work through problems. Uses a packet system so no textbook required.
This math course was combined with Math 18B, a support class. There is plenty of HW/Support exercises and quizzes as well as a portfolio where you have to make videos and reflections. The professor was helpful in discussing HW or Quizzes. However there are some cases where you wont get a direct answer in favor of figuring it out yourself.
Worst math teacher I have ever had. First math course I did not pass. The professor doesn't know what she is doing for a lot of the material, relying on copying her own notes. Copies structure of Dr. Morales, big packets for notes and homework. She made a tough subject even harder. Test questions are always the most difficult she can find. Horrible
She really cares and wants you to succeed. She does expect you do the work but she is willing to explain and help but you have to help yourself and do the videos and assignments. Stay on top of things from the start and you will be fine.
Skip the 18B part/skip this professor. Don't waste your time. Two hours of doing homework in groups, then taking a daily quiz. Unlike Morales's class, no retakes. Quiz grades changed to match test grades. Paula walks around to ask if anyone needs help. That's the class. Lecture notes done at home don't match the complexity of homework/ exams.
Run the other way.
Prof. Young was a great instructor for stats- more so if you are willing to focus, question, and work with your group. The subject is challenging, as there are many topics to cover but Prof. Young is more than willing to elaborate, re-do questions, etc. There's many take-home assignments, so ensure that you can allocate time. But it is WORTH IT.
So I am a student from grade c up to grade A at the end of semester. Mrs. Paola is a very great professor, even you mess up one of the unit test, you have a chance to re-take one unit test before the final, homework are not hard, have extra credit, give you the a lot of opportunity to improve your grades.
Professor Young creates a lot of work, but if you stay on top of the videos and assignments, you can succeed. The grading is picky, but using tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the class resources can help. Overall, the class is challenging but manageable with diligence.
You will receive a good grade only if you are genuinely gifted in math. She gives an insane amount of hw, her videos can never be skipped or sped up. Not doing hw tanks your grade but doing it barely brings it up. Acts like her class is the only one you're taking. Doesn't curve exams and very harsh grader. You won't go one day without hw btw.
Paula is a good professor who knows what she's teaching, her lecture makes you understand material pretty well and also gives lots of help in class. If you're good at math or took ap calc before i recommend. However there's daily quiz every class, and exam is way too difficult to the point that scoring B makes you like top 5 in the class.
Honestly I was so hesitant on taking this class. Prof. Young was a great professor she basically hands you everything you need on a silver platter. All the notes you need to take she gives it to you, even extra credit to go towards you final exam. Yes, there is a lot of homework, but only way to fail is not paying attention and not doing the work.
Maybe for those who has the time to dedicated in this course, I say Professor Young is for those who struggles a lot in understanding the math and dedicates her time in class giving you more busy work so she can watch in the sidelines how you do it. Sometimes she does glances at your raised hand and never gets to you.
Gives hw like there's no tmrw. Gives daily quizzes after each class, but the questions are no where close to the difficulty seen on exams. You would think these questions prepare you for the exam…no. I got 8/8 on every quiz, and failed her exams. She says the exam will be like the hw, no it's even worse. Think up the worst problems ever.
Don't. Take. Her. Just don't. Did all my work, which was pages upon pages, and the tests weren't anything like it. Nothing can prepare you for her harsh grading, not even her own reviews.
The only class I've ever done so badly in and it be completely not my fault. She looks for perfection. Minor algebra errors means half points on exam questions even if you completely understand the concept. She genuinely does not care. Got exams back with all points off even when I applied concepts correctly. Takes points for every little thing.
Calc181 is a tough class, no matter the prof. She expects you to rlly understand the material, not just memorize how to do it. Is a tough grader, passing is achievable, an A is tough. flipped classroom. doesnt lecture but explains things rlly well if asked privately. Hmwk load isnt that bad, half of semester was literally like 6 problems a week.
Really caring and helpful when assistance is needed. Always has her office hours open, and she is very welcoming. There are daily quizzes that provide the foundation for each lecture, so it can be easy if you put in the effort Lots of workload if you desire extra credit. While the quizzes don't match the exam level, it's fine if you know the basics
