is not interested in teaching not a good professor
Worst teacher I have ever taken class with.
The most useless professor I've ever taken a class from. Did not care about his students actually learning the material. Did not teach one bit of useful information to the students and expected them to know everything from his textbook. He considers his research above his teaching duties. Stay away!
This is one of the best professors I ever had. I took with him Numerical Methods I which was not an easy course at all because of the programming part. He spent with me lots of time and was VERY patient. He really wants to help you, but you have to show interest and that you care.
Dr. Solin is genuinely interested in the subject he is teaching as well as the students' progress. He was always available to help with the programming aspect. You will learn a lot in his class.
A very good professor, very helpful. If you want to learn advanced numerical techniques to solve multiphysics problems take his class.
By far my favorite Prof. of all time. He is fun and loves to help. He was interested in everything I had to say, even though my knowledge of the field was zip and I could barely do the homework at the beginning. He teaches the basics well, and gives you good material to advance to masters and phd level, (not required for the class).
Before I attended his class I have heard Functional Analysis is a very hard topic but as classes passes by I found it easy. He made his class very interactive and his lectures were very clear. He helped me a lot in his homeworks and I found him very lenient in the matters of grades.
Hi, I am a hydrology major so I was afraid of an advanced finite element course. But it was a cool one, I learned FEM and I am still using it today. Everyone got a laptop for the semester but we had to do lots of programming. But Prof. Solin was really helpful in this, he even debugged my programs with me. Take MATH 429 if you like programming.
Dr. Pavel Solin is one of my top 3 professors I ever had in my life. He really cares about his students and you are going to learn a lot from him. He made his class very interesting and his lectures were very clear. I always felt that he was willing to help me, so YES, take the class and learn !!
He is one of the best professor I ever had. His class was very interesting and his lectures were clear enough. He was organized and he gave us usefull handouts through the semester. I did learn a lot from him.
Extremely helpfull, will spend as much time as one needs to help them. very enthusiastic about the subject and very knowledgeable. calss is challenging but thats what makes it interesting and worth going to class. one of the better professors i have had.
Accent is a little hard to understand at first hut you get used to it quickly. The course is very interesting and he shows you everything you need to know to do the homeworks and tests. Know a little about computer programming or be able to see him outside of class to be sure you understand what is going on. He rewards hard work. Great teacher!
His lectures are extremely clear and well organized, he's really helpful if you're just willing to come see him, and he's extremely interested in what he does. He lives and breaths this stuff. I really liked this class and learned a lot from it, and I'm going to take the second Numerical Methods class from him - I can't wait =)
Teacher is very helpful in office hours and offers a ton of extra credit.
The 285 book he uses is completely useless. His pace is really slow, which is good, but be prepared for when he realizes he's going too slow. He will throw chapters and chapters of work at you without explanation not understandable lecture notes.
This teacher is very unhelpful. When I went to his office hours for help in approaching his tests, he sent me away and told me I should be checked to see if I have a learning disability. When I asked for more general tips for approaching his tests, he said he couldn't help me because it would be unfair to the other students.
This Professor cares about students' success. He always encourage the students to go to his office to get help during his office hours. He is very patient and kind to the student who needs help. He always write the important information on the board clearly, and always make sure that the students understand the content.
Solin makes sure to take the time and explain any questions students may have. Extremely helpful if you attend his office hours. He really wants his students to learn, so he does what he can to help you (especially if you don't have a strong coding background).
Dr. Solin is generous and patient. He's devoted to helping students truly understand the material. The skills taught apply directly to various STEM fields. Those with adequate skills in calculus and programming in C should be comfortable with the workload. Exams are quite unpredictable, drawing from the homework, notes, text, and prereq courses.
This course is very interesting Dr. Pavel is extremely helpful. His lectures were clear enough. I learned a lot from this course. He is generous and patient.
This class won't be easy if you don't have coding experience. Homework is 40% of your grade and is all code. His lectures were vague and could have been better explained if he would have done actual example problems. It makes the exams a scary because you have never seen or done problems like them in class. Passble, but I'd take someone else.
I liked Prof Solin. He's funny and the class (Diff Eq) was sorta fun. The homework, midterms AND FINAL were given online and we not proctored {nudge nudge}. If you have any complaint about this class, I don't know what would make you happy.
The class was interesting and the homework was challenging. Professor was always willing and able to help.
This class is really easy and professor solin is a good teacher. Attendance is not mandatory but it is easier to go to class than to teach yourself the material. All the homeworks and tests are online and he's very accommodating to your schedule. He answers questions and doesn't move too fast even for a summer class, I recommend taking this class!
Great teacher! Very helpful in and out the classroom and is willing to work with students when unexpected circumstances arise.
This class was straightforward and not very demanding. homework and tests were online, which is not for everyone, but its easy to get an A.
I thought this was a good course. Homework and exams were online and there were no surprises. Dr. Solin went over several examples in class and made sure all the steps were clear to the class. This class can be very difficult, but with instruction it was not bad. Solin was also accommodating in regards to class needs. I would recommend this prof.
I took it over the summer and it was tough because of how much you have to learn in a short amount of time but Prof Solin is very willing to help you if you ask for it and he is very accommodating. He is relaxed about attendance although I recommend going to every class. Also all hmwks and tests are online. I highly recommend this class and Prof!
I took this class over the summer and anticipated it to be very challenging. However, Solin's lectures are clear and he is very willing to help. All of his homeworks and tests are online, but they aren't too heavy.
Excellent teacher. Extraordinarily helpful when you approach him. Extended HW assignments when there was a mixup with online HW tool. Accent not very difficult, bit takes some getting used to!
if you want an A take the class if you want to really test your knowledge then take it with other proffesor
He was very understanding when it came to issues with subject material or problems with homework. Pretty clear lectures, and he's a funny guy.
he is a very smart guy and a great teacher. i will be taking D.F.Q. next semester with him, tests are fair and homeworks too. i will advice everyone to take classes with him.
Whether you're an independent or dependent math learner, Prof Solin is the guy to take. If you're indenpent, then this is the class for you. Homework is online and if you need help, he is always there after class is over. If your dependent, he is very thorough and ALWAYS down to stay after to help you out. Take this guy for every math class!!
Not difficult to pass, and to do well and learn. Will work with you on your grade. All tests and homework and final online. Extremely good teacher. More than happy to help with questions during or after class, as well as highly available office hours. Extremely passionate, highly competent. Highly recommended without hesitation.
Was very thorough when explaining course material. Often prompted students to ask questions and answer questions and did become slightly frustrated when no one responded. Because all tests and homework are online and therefore the book and notes can be used, material retention may be low unless personal effort is applied. In general a good teacher.
In general a good teacher. The homeworks and exams, including the final, were all online, and although there were a few difficult problems they were overall simple assignments. My only complaint is that if he didn't quite understand a question it seemed like he got frustrated with the student.
Prof. Solin is a great teacher and has a thorough understanding of the material. I liked being able to take all the homeworks and tests online and got an easy A
Professor Solin is very helpful. In all the different types of Differential Equations and solving, he focused on the ones we would encounter in our careers instead. He showed a couple ways to do things not listed in the book, making it simple. I recommend him to all of my friends. A+
Dr.Solin teaches this class with a lot of compassion. He's love for Mathematics is very moving. He is very inspiring and if you pay attention and concentrate there is a high chance that you will get an A too. Take your time and do the HWKS. You will learn a lot from them.
I loved his class. He was always helpful, especially in his office hours. I enjoyed the way he set his tests up online, it was much less stressful than having to take the test in class. I highly recommend taking his DiffEq class, especially if you're a programmer.
Professor Solin knows his stuff and teaches very well. He encourages class mates to participate in class by working on problems on the board. Great teacher.
Good professor keeps it stress free so you can actually learn the material. My favorite math professor yet!
Dr. Solin is an incredible teacher. I definitely recommend him, he is clear, understanding, and helpful. I look forwards to taking more of his classes in the future, as they were very enjoyable. Thanks for a fantastic semester!
Great and understanding teacher. Still enrolled in this coarse and i already know i will end up with a good grade due to the way he has thing structured in his class. He also encourages everyone to participate in class by working out problems on the board, he definitely knows his stuff
Really knows what he's doing. Expects you to know the basics of calculus but helpful where you may be rusty. Lectures are interesting and easy to sit through. It's helpful to come to lecture prepared, so you can ask questions where you do not understand. Encourages participation and students to think for themselves. Highly Recommend
He is a great teacher who will go great lengths to explain what he did and why to a student. Overall very helpful in understanding the material of the course. Which is in itself hard to understand. I would recommend his course to anyone required to take 285.
Very straightforward class. Go to lecture, do the webassign homework. Dr. Solin is always willing to help you, even with outside stuff, so he's a great resource in general. Go through the motions and you'll get a good grade.
Prof Solin is a fantastic professor. Expect 1 homework assignment per week and 3 exams including a final. This class should be any A for anybody, if your willing to do a few hours per week. He is very helpful and wants each student to succeed. He is very understanding and will help students get good grade such as extending past homework assignments
Dr. Solin is a great teacher with a strong understanding of the subject matter. The work is not too difficult if you put in an effort, and he's more than willing to help you in class if you speak up.
Pavel Solin has been a great teacher throughout the semester. He is very accommodating and happy to explain difficult concepts and is always quick to answer emails. He allows students take the tests online, which is helpful for people who struggle with test anxiety. He is also an engaging lecturer, which made an evening math class bearable.
I am a student athlete and having good professors is a rarity. I love math and I am a stats major. Needless to say I enjoyed this course. The professor really knows his stuff and always encourages questions from students and for us to let him know when we did not understand something. Easily accessible professor. Enjoyable class.
Professor Solin is fairly engaging in class. He cracks jokes and keeps things light, but he also gives plenty of examples for each topic that he covers. You don't need to go to lecture to pass if you can understand the textbook, but I suggest you go since he clarifies things and also announces test dates in class. Overall, he's an easy and fun A
I am a pre med student with a math minor, so naturally I loved this class! Solin is a very clear professor and he makes his lectures fun and interesting! Make sure you go to class, even though you might feel like you don't need to, because much of what is on his tests come from lecture notes. Overall, amazing class and professor!!!
Good teacher, does a really good job at teaching the material. all the homework is online so you can take this class at your own pace. tests are also online so you can take them in the comfort of your PJ's!!
DO attend your recitation group. Sometimes it gets a little confusing until you're taught it again. He will go off on tangents using computer programming, which you don't need, but it's not too often. Pretty clear, amusing, fun, liked to teach, enjoys his students, and the study guides he provides are GREAT. Do them and do well.
I had Dr. Solin for calc 2 (MATH 182). I loved his lectures because he really made sure he answered all questions and gave several examples. The homework and quizzes were not terribly difficult and helped me understand the topics. We had 3 midterms and a final. The tests are not difficult if you study and practice.
Professor Solin is a brilliant man, but linear algebra is HIS field, and he takes it too seriously. He's passionate about identities that have no real world value, and expects you to be just as passionate. Beware tests. The saving grace is that the semester's homework can be done in one week. Honestly, just take the class with an easier professor.
Nice guy but exams were not reflective of the homework. Homework is 40% of the grade and three tests make up the other 60%. Solin does not give any practice tests either. Studied but bombed the first test. I would suggest taking it with someone else.
I am not a huge fan of math, but I really enjoyed Professor Solin's class, although I didn't receive the best grade, I worked really hard. This class is difficult, but manageable if you put in the effort! Stay up to date to be prepared for the tests, and do the homework!
Get a textbook for this course! I cannot stress this enough. His first exam was extremely challenging. Very little partial credit given on it. The second exam and the final was much more fair. He teaches off a powerpoint, but you'll do fine if you learn from the textbook instead. The homework wasn't helpful but its still 40% of your grade so do it!
Very cool guy, probably one of the most mathematically-minded people I've ever met, and he still knows how to make a joke. He uses some abstract methods to convey what he's teaching which can be both good and bad. However, he's one of the less-lenient UNR math professors so you do have to work for your grade
Very nice professor. Very great teaching. I am really enjoyed his class. He answered all the question and gives great example. He use the online textbook which is very great. His notes are very helpful. Take some time to study and do the homework. Your will be fine in this class. Wish you can have him for your math class.
Dr. Solin is a great professor who cares about his students. He always stops what he is teaching to make sure his students are fully understanding the material he is lecturing on. He is open to questions and always welcomes us to come his office hours outside of class.
This class could've been way harder but it was not bad overall. It's easy to pass but I can honestly say that I know nothing about Laplace Transforms. If you want to actually learn diff eq, I'd take it with a different prof. This class was part of the reason why I switched my emphasis from Applied Math.
only hw is online now. test and etc are all done in person. nice dude, kinda funny. hard to prepare for his test as he assigned review out of the book and approx 100+ problems, but I got a C.
amazing teacher would highly recommend
A very efficient and friendly teacher. Covers the material in-depth and in an understandable manner. Nothing tricky on the exams as long as you pay attention and do the homework. He is also very flexible and willing to help. He answers emails quickly and is very understanding and helpful with questions. Just put in the effort and you'll get an A
I took this course fall of 2020, so it may be very different from normal. It all utilized NCLab which basically acted like reading the book and answering the example problems for credit. This meant that homework and lectures were kind of combined into one. There were still in person lectures that were optional if you prefer that over reading.
Linear algebra was so much fun with Pavel. He uses NCLab which he created so he has full control over the homework, he can add or take away things online, and it's his textbook which was amazing. Lecture was optional because he covers all of the lecture material in the NCLab sections. I also took him for 285 diff eq and the class was great too.
So this professor decided to announce the midterm before the official class time. When I showed up on time the professor failed to speak of the midterm again until the end of class where he misspoke and said the test was on the wrong date. He did not write it on the board or make an official announcement. Other students also were misinformed.
There's actually a ton of information to go over in this class, lots of mathematical terms and definitions to memorize. The actual calculations aren't that tough, but being able to define every little aspect about a matrix becomes tedious. NCLab is nice, it's self paced, but Professor Solin's lectures are a little dry and difficult to sit through.
This class was easy. Professor Solin takes plenty of time to go over topics and any questions people have. His handwriting was tough to read, but he is a really good guy. He is really knowledgeable in the subject matter and is excited to teach others. Tests are just like the homework, so pretty easy to get an A
I love Dr. Solin, I took 330 and 285 with him, planning to take 488 with him next spring. Super nice guy, responds to emails in mins. I took the SQL 499 class and it was very easy, very fun, heard it's much easier than his Python 499 class. I learned tons and using NCLab helped me to really understand the material. Send him an email and enroll!
Solin is one of the most influential professors I had at UNR. I took 4 of his classes, and it was nice to have at least one professor that was genuinely here to teach and spread knowledge. He cares a lot about teaching, and UNR can often get in his way. If you are lucky enough to be able to take his 499 classes before they get pulled, do it!
Dr. Solin is by far the best professor for PDEs. He taught a classical theory (what the catalog requires) and then gave us his PDEs textbook and taught a modern theory. Modern theory is functional analysis heavy, recommend taking at least real analysis first. Second exam take home. Fair grader. Overall great class. Very difficult, though.
No quizes!, formula sheet w/examples for exams!, homework is 40 % of your grade!, the test were formated differently (free response), the exams are alike the homework questions!. Hand writing is difficult to read sometimes and accent isnt so bad you get use to it. Answers to emails!
Professor Solin is an amazing professor! He really does care about the content of the course, and he had his grad students develop an app to help you solve matrices (a godsend!). He was easy to reach in emails for homework help and preferred making tests take-home. I couldn't imagine taking 283 with another professor.
Professor Solin's lectures were very enjoyable. They were easy to follow and he always stopped to go back through and explain things we didn't understand. He was always available for help during office hours and was very welcoming. There were only two midterms and not too many homework assignments. I would definitely take him again.
He teaches very understandably. Showing up and doing homework was really all that was necessary with a few hours for test study prep to ace the class. Teaches at a very sustainable pace and goes over material multiple times to ensure it is understood. Took him for Linear and Dify Q, would take any other classes I could in future.
He is a good choice as professor for anyone going in applied math, CS, or engineering. Don't expect easy q's on exams - they are more like free response. I recommend visiting office hours as he is quite helpful despite that he can be intimidating at first. Cons: Pearson sucks & I recommend a diff textbook: Elementary Linear Algebra by Howard Anton.
Based on the reviews on this site, I had high expectations for this professor, but I can say my expectations have been met and then some. It's rare to find a teacher who truly cares and tries his hardest to make you understand the material. I also appreciated his honesty with his students even if some didn't like how direct he was.
The lectures can be a little dry, the homework is through pearson, and the exams are very easy, 10 questions each time, just show work. I think he lost some passion because he is not allowed to teach using his software anymore, so he has much less control over the class. He is lovely at office hours and will help if you need though!
