Ravioli? holy canoli!
haha this guy hums out beethoven and mozart using only the words ping and pong!
Good professor. Somewhat unclear at times because he doesn't know the English word for what he wants to say. He does sing song using "Ping" and "Pong". Pretty funny. Extremely helpful, really wants to get to know you personally.
This class is the hardest thing ever. You have to memorize hundreds of classical music pieces. Pedro is a great guy, however. He is more than willing to help students with homework, tests or even extra credit. He is really a geniune nice guy and his accent is really funny...ping pong
THE HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN, but he is the sweetest guy ever! he is so nice! Well... I've only been to class like 5 times the whole year, but he was really nice on those 5 days! STUDY A LOT! I dont understand why this course is a required gened- it is SO HARD and ill never use the info again
Not very interesting. Unclear when comes to taking the test, what material is going to be on the test.
Very boring class but he doesn't take attendance. You don't need to go to class, just study the exam review you will do fine on the tests. There are about 5 quizzes, 3 tests, and one concert report which is super easy. He's a nice guy. Go see him during office hours and he'll like you.
the people that say it's the hardest class must be the ones that never go. There are classes that are much worse than this one. And he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. he tells us everything that's going to be on the test, how is that hard?
this teacher is so nice and so adorable. its such an easy class, he gives you an exam review and the test is DIRECTLY off of that...couldnt be any easier..the musical examples are hard, but theres only a couple and some are obvious...definitely take him..so sweet!
He's a nice guy. Going to class isn't really that necessary. I know nothing about music though, so studying is a must. The class is out of 100 points though, so every point really counts. I recommend him for sure, but just dont underestimate the amount of study time necessary.
most boring teacher ever. i stopped going to class, so i have to study. posts his notes from class online..so i don't see the point in going. havn't learned a thing about music yet. He's nice and means well though..likes to know people on a personal level
Very sweet man but the class just can't keep my attention. I can't sit through a class and listen to everything, so I haven't learned anything about music. If you enjoy learning about music and already have a slight understanding, then the class will be good for you.
Really nice guy, and funny. I don't learn much in his lectures, just because his power point lectures are so boring. They do not hold my attention, and I can't say how many times I've fallen asleep in this class. No attendence policy, tells you all quiz/test dates, just study hard, and it's fine.
PEDRO'S THE MAN!!! Very easy class, great guy. Wants you to learn and do well. LOVES to sing twinkle twinkle little star. Kind of boring, but can be entertaining at times. He's such a nice guy, you want to go to class.
okay..honestly, He doesnt know what he's teaching, this professor dont even know how to play a piano, he doesnt curve the exams, exams dont even come from the reviews..but very nice guy.
Love this guy! he is soo laid back! you dont have to go to classes you dont have to take notes. His quizzes and tests are pretty easy he gives study guides!! If your lookin for a laid back class and a cute lil latino man get him!!
This class was great. If you like music it will be a great class to take, if not, it is an easy A. Pedro rocks and is really nice. He goes over all the information and it is straight from the book. All notes are online too. I can't believe people said the information was unclear. So easy!
Pedro is by far the nicest man I have ever met, if you go to class alot or go and talk to him hell give you extra credit, the class is wicked easy, and he is a lil confused in lectures but is funny and SO nice, if you can, def take him
AWESOME guy!! His tests are all based on the book. He posts his notes online, and if he knows your name that helps. He stutters a little bit during lectures, but for the most part their worth going to. He offers extra credit and wants everyone to do well. I got an A!
Only requires ONE concert report. Tests are straight from book and notes. Notes are online. If you already know a little about music, it's an incredibly easy class. If not, I can't imagine it would be that hard. Very nice man. Not a bad class. Easy B at the lowest. I got an A.
Pretty easy class. Notes are posted on blackboard and come right from the book. Only one concert report and most people got A's on it. Nice guy and will work with you.
Good guy, always willing ot help you outside of class, always showing an enthusiastic attitude for teaching. Tests are very easy, as are the quizes. No attendance policya and all of this powerpoint slides are online!
VERY friendly, nice, and helpful. Always upbeat, and has nice stories to tell. Tests were pretty fair and easy as well. He wants everyone to do well and understand the material, and is very energetic about teaching. I would take another class with him if I could.
CUTEST LITTLE TEACHER EVER. HE'S SO EASY. THE EASIEST A EVER. SPORADIC ATTENDANCE POLICY. SO EASY. TAKE HIM. HE HAS A FUNNY LITTLE ACCENT AND IT'S PEDRO. HELLO!!!!!!!
loooooove him!! funny guy, really enjoyed going to every class, exams weren't bad, helpful, clear..TAKE HIM!!
He has the cutest accent--he sings twinkle twinkle little star cuter than a 5 year old. The class starts off really easy but gets harder as the year goes on, so it's easy to slack off in the beginning. But the class is really boring to sit through. No attendance policy.
Cutest guy ever...reminds me of the guy off of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movie, glasses and all. Very helpful, very upbeat, and an all around great guy! Take advantage of this class!!!
TAKE HIS CLASS! Veryyy easy class, lots of extra credit and an easy grader. Gives extra credit for showing up when not many other people do. Although I have no musical ability, this class was a breeze. Only 1 paper to write, and 3 tests and 3 quizzes that are rediculously easy. Study for an hour or 2 before the tests and get an A.
Awesome guy, makes the class fun to go to. The class started of easy, but has a gotten harder. Although everyone says the class is an easy A the class average is more of an 80. I would say it's an easy B, but to make an A you do have to put effort into it especially for a gen ed class.
Awesome guy. His class isn't the easy A that most people expect, but he is straightforeward and clear, and extremely helpful. One of the nicest and funniest teachers you will ever have.
A if you try and go to class....B if you hardly try at all and go to class occasionally...and C if you dont try, dont go to class, and are an idiot
He is a great guy, but to students who dont want to take a music course, it is hard to get through to them. He does work hard to get students to try and understand. No attendance policy. Its not the easiest course, especially for people who do not know much about music or its elements.
Aponte is among the nicest professors at JMU. He works hard to try and convey ideas and concepts in class. Often, it is not easy since few people fully understand what the material is saying. 3 exams, no attendance policy, 5 quizzes. The course isnt fun, but Aponte is worthwhile.
If you are looking for an easy A, don't register for this class. But if you are looking to learn anything at all about music from a really interesting professor, take him! He is a nice guy, who LOVES what he teaches. Getting a B is very practical, as long as you attend lectures.
I took Pedro in a MusHist (373) over the summer. In comparison to the regular year it was so much easier, not b/c the material had changed but becaus e he changed the entired set up of the course b/c the class voted it was easier to comprehend... that's a good teacher.
This was an easy class. Powepoint was used every class for notes. He is a very nice guy. There is no attendence policy, however he gives pop quizzes. The tests are very easy.
Pedro was an awesome teacher. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but he gives pop quizzes and it is easy to receive class participation. I learned a lot in this class even though it was not of my interest. If you study you'll get an A.
I've taken music class in high school. I expected an A in this class, but I thought it would be easy. Yes, it is easy, but don't be fooled. You always have to work for an A, but it's easy to get a B. There's one long essay due by a group, pick your group wisely, because it counts for more than an exam would.
pedro is so adorable. sometimes it is hard to understand him b/c of his accent but he really does care about the subject. he is very nice and can be funny at times. you do have to work in this class but if you go to class it shouldn't be that hard. gives random attendance quizzes
such a cute little guy so helpful and nice really wants you to enjoy class i do sudoku puzzles all class and i have a A 10 page paper but its a piece of cake take him most definitely and i hate music so .. he makes it fun
Aponte is a really fun teacher. You never know what he's going to say next - and its hilarious when he sings "twinkle twinkle little star". Definitely want him as a professor! One of the best at JMU
Nice guy, easy class. I did no work and got a B.
Easy class. Knows that it's a genEd and teaches it that way. No attendance policy. You don't even need the textbook. Go to class (and stay awake) and get an A. Nobody should get worse than a B in this class.
3 exams - 50 questions each and an optional 4th cumulative if you to bring up your grade.Exams are pretty easy as long as you do your reading and come to class. Very interesting class. You will learn about music from all around the world and wont think about music the same way Professor Aponte is a very nice and friendly man. Def. take this class!
He has no attendance policy, he posts all the powerpoints on Blackboard, and he is a genuinely friendly guy. He doesn't make this gen-ed any harder than it has to be, and the material is interesting. Definitely take his class!
i love pedro!!! but beware that his class is boring.. very boring. every once in a while he will through in something cute.
It's important to read the textbook in this class because Aponte is very difficult to understand and the material is dense. Do the listenings.
Aponte is a good professor. Class can be very boring at times. Quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class. 3 tests and an optional final. Easy B, if you put some work in you can get an A- or A. Loves when the class participates and wants his students to do well.
Pedro has an interesting way of teaching and is very kind. The class requires lots of memorization of songs and the ability to point out specific aspects in that song.
He's great! He makes the subject easy to learn; he pretty much lays everything out there for you. You have to try hard to get a bad grade. Seriously. Attendance isn't mandatory, so if you skip out on class, just read the book and powerpoint. He has quizzes every couple of classes. They're only 10 questions and on what you learned the class before.
Take this professor! Attendance is not mandatory, although it is recommended. If you go to class, you will be fine. Tests and quizzes are all multiple choice and they come straight from the powerpoints, which he posts online. Easy A or B.
Easiest class in the world. No attendance policy. Quizzes are on the syllabus and the quiz is only on the lecture before the quiz date. 3 small exams and a optional final. I got an A- in this class and i never went. Just read the powerpoints listen to the music. Show up for the quiz and leave.
Its a hard B- If you have no interest in the subject just dont take this class. It is a waste and even if you study your ** off, you will get a mere B-
Not a difficult class, particularly if you have a music background, though not hard if you don't! Lectures are posted before class on blackboard and exams are fair/straightforward. B with a little effort- A easily attainable. (:
AWW I LOVE PEDRO! Okay, so the class is a little (or a lot) on the dull side, but he is so cute with his little accent and how hard he tries. I got an A. It wasn't that hard, just go to class and stay awake and you will pass the quizzes no problem, and study a little for the tests and you will be fine!
Not a fantastic "teacher"; basically just read from the textbook the whole class. Not a fun class to go to, only reason it's fun is because of his heavy accent.
Very knowledgeable professor. I learned a lot in this class. Attendance is not mandatory but I got a lot from the lectures. I studied a lot to get a B- and the class average was C. Recommended.
This was an interesting class, it was definitely hard to go since it was at 8 AM. Professor Aponte knows his material and is helpful. His quizzes and tests are easy if you study the notes and read the textbook, he will ask random things though. Overall, it was an okay class. Sign up for a later class if you want to actually pay attention and learn!
This class had a lot of interesting material, but going to it at 8 am made it rather difficult to sit through at times. Three tests and an optional final. Dr. Aponte knows his stuff and will help you if you need it. Highly recommend. Easy gen-ed
Easy class 4 tests and an optional final. Material isn't hard no text book i feel it helps to go to class but he puts all the powerpoints online. Tests are not that hard and its a pretty easy gened especially since there isn't any homework!
Great professor, he makes the class bearable at 8 am
Tests are pretty easy which is a plus. Not the most interesting class though. His accent is so cute and you really wish it was easier to stay awake in the class. No textbook which is another plus. Nice man, class isn't the most fun though.
one of the best profs at jmu. The subject matter was very interesting to me but i had researched this class ahead of time so i knew what to expect. Recommended if you want to learn something.
This is an interesting class but I would not take it unless you are interested in the subject. It is an easy class but do not underestimate it...some studying is necessary if you want a good grade. An A or a B are definitely attainable.
No textbook which is great. Attendance is not mandatory and he doesn't take it but if you want to do well you actually have to go and take notes. Tests are based on notes, songs and the hour-long documentaries he sometimes assigns. Hard to stay awake in class, but if you're interested in the course material he's great.
He has passion for the subject, but he doesn't understand how to gain the interest of the class.
Professor Aponte is a very nice man and a great professor. He clearly explains all the material through powerpoint led lectures of which the tests are based off of. There are 4 exams worth 25% each and attendance is necessary to do well. The final exam is optional. I came in with no music background currently have an A.Easy class take it!
For not being good at music I found this class really easy. There is no textbook so you do have to go to class to get all the notes. His tests are right from the powerpoints and the final is optional. Definitely an easy GenEd and GPA booster!
well, if you want to have real fun in this music class, don't take him. He focuses on ethnomusicology which is more like cultural class. If you are not interested in memorize a lot of stuff, don't take this class. Otherwise, the third test will kill you. However, if you don't care worry these, you can get an optional final and a great grade.
Well, if you don't want to memorize a lot of terms and listen to unpopular music, then don't take him. At the very beginning of the class he would clarify that his class is about ethnomusicology. Even though attendances don't count for your grade but will affect your test score. Anyways, you can get a optional final if you did great jobs on tests.
Really Really easy...and he's pretty adorable. If you attend classes, you won't even have to study for the tests. Easiest class I have taken at JMU (and I'm a second semester senior)
TAKE HIM!! He is so helpful. He's really knowledgable about the material, & he makes it interesting. I am definitely not a music person, but i liked this class. No textbook, 4 tests (m/c,listening sections, matching, and T/F), optional final to replace a low test grade. No attendance policy, but he doesnt post notes on BB so you should go. TAKE HIM
Pedro is adorable! His lectures tend to be boring if you are not a music person, but overall it is a pretty easy class. There are only 4 tests, and if you actually go to class and take notes then the tests are not that bad. I would suggest him if you want a class that doesn't take much work.
I'm not a music person but professor Aponte went above and beyond to help me in this class. The subject was very interesting and he approached it as an anthropology class instead of music. Highly recommended.
Aponte is really sweet. I am not a music major or interested in music but managed an A- in the class with little work. He doesn't really give homework to turn in and no textbook. The final is optional and and drop lowest grade. Nice professor!
Pedro Aponte is so nice and is really passionate about the material he teaches. I took this class as a gened and had no interest in music (a lot of it is learning about other cultures and it kind of takes away from the emphasis on music) it wasn't hard...if you study your notes from class and watch the videos you can definitely get an A.
He is very passionate about the material and will always clarify any confusing points. Keeps things simple both in class and on tests. The music and cultures that we studied have actually been very interesting. I recommend this class.
Pedro is adorable. You can tell he loves the content that he is teaching. Four tests, no textbook, optional final exam. Attendance is not mandatory but you really should go: there are always little details that he talks about on the test. That being said, if you look at the listening guides, go to class, and study just a little, you'll be gold.
I started going to his office hours shortly after the semester began, and he helped SO much. His tests can be tricky and its hard since his 4 tests are the only grades for the class, but going to see him after a test to go over it really helps! I definitely recommend him if you're willing to go to office hours.
This class was brutal just so uninteresting . I guess if you put in some effort you could do alright on the tests but if you aren't a music person you probably won't do that well.
This class is brutal. He's not that bad but the class is literally so uninteresting and the tests are too hard for music...if you like African and Japanese classical music you'll like this class....? I would definitely look into different GenEd options for this cluster.
The tests are straight from the notes. If you take good notes its an easy A because he does not deviate from his powerpoint presentation. Take him its an easy class
Pedro is awesome! Such a funny and nice guy. Pretty easy and straight forward class too. Only grades in this class are 4 tests that are straight from the notes. There is a lot of content on them but if you study pretty well before the test you'll be fine! Definitely recommend it over other GMUS classes.
Dr. Aponte's class was an absolute delight. Attendance is not mandatory but his 4 tests come straight from the powerpoints (which aren't online). There's a lot of history and vocab but you can tell he loves what he teaches and his energy is infectious. He's a wonderful person and professor. If you like music take this class!
Dr. Aponte's class was an absolute delight. Attendance is not mandatory but his 4 tests come straight from the powerpoints (which aren't online). There's a lot of history and vocabulary but you can tell he loves what he teaches and his energy is infectious. He's a wonderful person and professor. If you like music take this class!
Pedros an actual good gen ed teacher. Class attendance isnt mandatory, but if you just go and write down everything on the powerpoints, study the night before, this class is easy. Find a friend in the class to maybe trade off going to class with, just get all the notes, and study one or two days before. Taking this class - good idea
Pedro is by far my fav professor. He is SO helpful and passionate about what he teaches. There are only 4 test so in order to receive a good grade you have to work hard and study for them. Attendance is not mandatory but going to class will really help you on the exams. He is so sweet and caring and even offers an optional final to help people!
This is a great professor if you're willing to go to office hours! I had a C in the class before I went into see him. After one 30 min office hour session my grade went from a C to an A on the next test! I would recommend him!
If you go to class and look over your notes before the test, you'll get an A. Pedro is amazing and so sweet, definitely take this class!
Dr. Aponte is an overall great professor and he does a great job teaching a gened. His tests are exactly the notes and listening activities in class so you will always know what to expect on the exams. 4 tests, optional cumul final. Attendance isn't mandatory but the way to succeed in this class is to show up, pay attention and take good notes.
Pedro is so cool. He loves teaching music and you can see his passion. If you attend class and take notes, you will most likely get an A in the class. There are 4 tests, and an optional final. He has an accent, you need to make sure you pay attention in class. I thought I would hate the class, but I would highly recommend him for a gened.
A very solid Gen-Ed and if u want an A then requires studying. Show up to class and take good notes bc the four exams come from the notelistening. Only downside is his small accent and a disorganize powerpoints. But He has so much passion for the subject and altho the class can get a little long at times his drive makes it worth ur time. He rocks!
Pedro was one of my favorite professors that I've ever had at JMU! He is so passionate about the subject and really knows what he is talking about. 4 tests and an optional final which come straight from the notes, so if you study you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure to go to class and take good notes. I would definitely take him again!
Whole grade is 4 tests and an optional final that replaces your lowest test grade. I recommend taking his class, no textbook, no need to goto class if you can get the notes.
He cares a lot about what he teaches and he's so incredibly passionate about music. His lecture on Venezuela is one of the most inspirational lectures. Yes, the only grades are 4 test grades, but he's always asking if anyone needs help and loves to engage students in class. It's more about culture, music is just the excuse to talk about culture.
Pedro is a homie, just go to class and take notes and you will get an A.
Pedro is a pretty cool guy. No need to go to lectures if you can get the notes but he doesn't post them online. You definitely need to study for tests, they are kind of difficult but if you takeget good notes they shouldn't be too bad. 4 tests and an optional final. very approachable and helpful
Dr. Aponte was exactly what a gen ed music professor should be. He doesn't post slides online, but if you show up and take notes its impossible not to get an A. People who didn't do well were those who didn't come to class. He is very helpful in office hours and enjoyable to talk with
Pedro is the best!! By far my favorite professor so far. He is incredibly helpful and super nice. He throws in some personal stuff for lectures which keeps it interesting. The material was also interesting and he played lots of examples. I wouldn't take this class if you don't do well on listening examples. It helps to be somewhat musical!
Optional final. 4 tests are the only grades. Easiest A I ever made. Go to class and take all the notes and study the notes for the test.
Your grade is based on 4 tests (multiple choice). Lectures are straight-forward and easy to follow. I never skipped class, took good notes, studied an average amount for tests, and did well. Aponte is accessible and genuinely wants students to succeed. Does not delve too far into topics because there is so much material to cover.
Pedro is incredibly boring unless you're actually interested in global music and african yodeling and indian chanting. I do not suggest taking this class unless you have no other option as a gen ed.
3 tests and optional final, he's not good at all at teaching or explaining stuff in class at all. Powerpoints are garbage and if u don't get the notes you'll fail the test. Class has non interesting music and was probably one of the biggest wastes of my time. Don't take this class, he tells ur that only about 5 people will get an A too.
He is very friendly, a great guy, and hilarious. BUT I am a Biochem major and I can confidently say that this Gen-ed was my hardest class I've ever taken at JMU and the lowest grade I've ever received while being a student here. The 4 tests were almost impossible to get over a B. If looking for an easy gened, I do not recommend.
such a sweet man who really wants to help all of his students! only grades are 4 tests and the final is optional. there is no textbook and attendance isn't mandatory. tests can be a little tricky and i definitely had to study for them but overall not a hard class!!
He is a nice, friendly guy, but doesn't have the qualities of a good professor. I went to every class, took notes, studied, but he was never clear on test material. I struggled, emailed him at least 4 times, and he responded once. Says he's happy to help us but rarely responded when I reached out. Very frustrating when grade doesn't reflect effort
He told us on the first class that previous year's stats suggested that only about 25 students (out of 220) will get As. That's what we got. Does he make it difficult for us? I don't think so. We knew what to expect. I ended up with a B- which I deserved (and I worked hard for the class). I did learned a lot, though. Worth the money.
Dr. Aponte is a great guy, awesome professor. He's soft spoken, which some students don't like, but he really cares about his job and all of his students. He's always available to talk. I had no interest in world music, and I only took the class for a gen-ed, but I was so lucky to get him he made it worth the time.
Class is very easy if you show up, take notes, and review those notes and listening examples before tests. 4 tests determine your grade with an optional final subbing in for lowest test grade. Nice man, take him.
I went to every lecture, took notes, studied, and always asked questions and I still never got above a low B on each test. there are only 4 tests that determine your grade and the final is optional and would substitute the lowest grade. But Dr. Aponte is just not a good professor, he is never clear on what he expects us to know for the tests.
I loved him! Although the material and lectures are dry, especially if you aren't particularly interested in global music, Pedro makes up for it! He is always willing to help and wants to share his passion with you. As long as you ask questions, study, and listen to the music examples you'll be fine. He doesn't post lectures so you have to come.
Your entire grade is just the average of 4 exams. He gives you an option of taking a cumulative final and replacing a test grade, but there is SO much information throughout the semester. It's not insanely hard, but it takes time. His exams are all 50 questions, so it's easy to do bad. You have to go to class. He doesn't give you access to the pp.
Hands down my favorite professor of the semester! This class is not "an easy A." I did end up with an A, but it was well earned. You must go to class because he does not post the notes online. I learned a lot in this class and as long as you put in effort, go to office hours/email him, and take good notes you should be able to get an A! Good class!
absolutely no work involved until it comes time for the test but you really need to know your stuff. if you don't go to class, don't expect to do well because the tests are straight from the lectures. not a super easy a like everyone thinks about dr. aponte makes it so worth it. be sure to get to know him as a person. he is the sweetest.
Such a great professor for this gened! There is no textbook, so all the material comes from lectures and online listening through canvas. Tests are fairly easy if you read over notes, and can recognize the songs he plays. Also, he is a very caring person that will help clear up confusions during or after class, and there was extra credit once.
Definitely the hardest class I took last semester, but Dr. Aponte was incredibly helpful and supportive. He offered to help me review before the tests, and that helped a great deal. He's very approachable, easy to talk to, and all around a very sweet person. His class is tough, yes, but it's very rewarding, and I learned a lot from him.
The only grades are 4 tests and an optional final. He is such a nice guy, but his lectures are sometimes not that interesting and sometimes confusing. I wish there was more grades, like occasional quizzes, because it's easy to do bad on the tests since there's so much material. Take him if you're willing to work for an A
I loved Dr. Aponte! There is no textbook, just listening examples on Canvas. He doesn't take attendance, but he also does not post his PowerPoints, so if you aren't at class, you won't have any information. His tests were VERY straightforward, and he is very easy to talk to if you ever have any issues understanding the course material. Take him!
This class is pretty straightforward: there's no textbook and all the information is pretty clearly given in lectures/powerpoints. Aponte is really passionate about music and the content is really interesting, my only complaint is that there are only 4 tests that are 25 points it, so it can be kinda difficult to get an A.
With only 4 tests graded, it's almost impossible to get an A. The information was interesting, and he was very nice, but it should be easier. There's an optional final to replace one of the test grades, and even with that I got an A-. I feel like I worked too hard in this class for what it was.
Professor Aponte was great. ONLY 5 tests (including final) and you drop the lowest one. no other homework or attendance. I thought I was going to sleep through the class but he made me want to learn more about what we were learning. great music too. tests are easy if you put in the work and use quizlets and such. Great class.
AMAZING GUY! I had no interest in music and ended the class with a B+. Make sure you listen to the musical examples and study your notes before tests. Does not post notes on canvas so you need to go to class to take notes or have a buddy system. Tests are related directly from class material. One of the nicest professors at JMU hands down people!!!
honestly, i came into this class thinking it would be super easy and it wasn't that easy. super sweet guy, but he was very confusing in class and was all over the place. His lectures don't really match up super well to his tests and you NEED to pay attention to all of the music he plays in class. overall, super boring class and harder than it looks
Do not listen to all of these people that said they got an A in the class. Literally on the first day of class he tells us that the majority of people will get below a B. Completely irrelevant material from a completely irrelevant teacher. Do not take this trash class.
You do not have to come to class however if you do not you wont get the notes. Theres only 4 tests and optional finial to boost your grade. Professor Aponte loves what he is teaching and makes the class interesting. The class covers some interesting material from all over the world. Would take this guy again! One of the best professor I have had.
Great guy, class is just unnecessarily hard for no reason. Makes you remember very specific things from his lectures which are very boring and hard to follow. Four tests that are each worth 25% of your grade, but there is optional final that drops your worst test. Fighting for a B in a class that should be very easy. Take a different class.
UPDATE: Spring 2019 Very nice guy, passionate about the subject. He wants you to learn so he doesn't like when you're on your phone or talking (like most professors). All of these comments make it sound like he's the hardest teacher ever, he's not. His test's are listening and multiple choice questions that come right from notes. Simple and easy.
If you only want the grade don't take this class. You'll have to study a lot. If you actually want to learn something TAKE IT. I'm a business major and I learn a lot of interesting facts that are significant to my field. Ended up with a B in class.
4 tests + 1 optional final (drops lowest, each test 25% of grade). no hw ever. lectures are boring boring boring. doesn't post notes online so show up or buddy system (doesn't grade attendance). getting a "C" is very easy. study day or 2 before each tests and you'll be fine. if you dont care about music and want an easy C/B take this class
There are 4 tests that are each 25% of the grade/ There is an optional final you can take to replace the lowest grade. The lectures are BORING and it is hard to pay attention (8 AM), but Aponte is a genuinely nice Professor! There is no homework and attendance policy, so be in class or get a GoogleDoc group and make sure to write down what he says.
Dr. Aponte was very kind, but his lectures were a bit boring. He also got distracted easily, and would talk about his farm often. If you show up, you'll get a good grade. We had no tests or quizzes, just one research paper and presentation at the end of the semester.
A very nice guy, your grade will reflect what you put into the class. If you show up to class and take notes, you'll have no problem succeeding.
Fine prof, no issues with him or his class. His lectures could be a little boring and he could go on tangents sometimes but he says hes improving. Definitely cares about his students. Before COVID, the only assignments were four tests and a couple short (100-word) assignments, but once it hit it was a weekly short discussion, final was optional.
Such a nice man, lectures are boring but the tests are not too bad.
I absolutely love professor Aponte. If you show up to his class and take notes, and listen to the music files on canvas before the exams, you will do fine. He genuinely cares about his students and is very understanding.
I love Professor Aponte as a person and professor but he does get carried away in class sometimes. He is a very kind and open person about his life and his class is very laid back. Attendance is not required but it is very suggested because that' the only way you will know what is on the test. He posts the PowerPoints but without any detailed info.
Aponte is a sweet guy. If you ask to go over the test he will give some points back. I got a B it was online. I would say I attended every lecture and studied but didnt study like crazy. I had to work for that B. His lectures were boring but he likes what he is teaching. The little assignments boost your average and the final is optional.
Professor Aponte is a great guy. He is super charismatic and nice. Lecture heavy, and they can be a bit boring, but you NEED to go to them. He will put things on the test from his lectures. Powerpoints are very simple, so you need to take notes on what he is actually saying. Overall though, he is super nice and really does care about success.
He's okay. I took this class hoping for an easy A, and was disappointed. He's a nice guy who is willing to help if you ask him, but the only grades are four tests and five 4-point assignments, and there's no extra credit. The content itself is also hard for a gen ed. Easy B, but not an easy A. If you are looking for an easy gen ed, this is not it.
This class was really informative and very universally applicable. A large portion of what you are graded on is your participation in discussions and two big group projects.
I absolutely loved having Pedro for this GenED. I always looked forward to going to his class because of how passionate he is about music. If you go to class and pay attention to his slides his exams will be easy for you! f you have the opportunity definitely take him!
Professor Aponte is caring and you can tell he loves what he teaches. I personally found the class very boring because it is basically all lecture and I'm not very interested in the topic. The assignments are easy and the tests aren't too bad. I'd recommend going to class, but I think 80% of my class stopped showing up after the second week.
Great guy, knows what he's talking about. It's 8AM, so bring a coffee, because he's not gonna wake you up. Also please go to class, and take rigorous notes. Aponte does a great job painting you a picture, you've just gotta participate and be engaged and you'll find this swell. Only 3 tests and 8 assignments, with tests weighted heavily.
Dr. Aponte is very passionate about what he teaches. Has strict rules during lectures (no talking, no phones, etc.) but then again, this is college. Course can be difficult without prior musical knowledge, but not impossible. Overall, not an easy A but still a viable option if you need the gen-ed.
Super sweet, lectures boring but if you listen you pass the class. Exams are online during class time but can be taken outside class. 5 easy assignments (a 6th is optional if you do well on all 5 of them; which if you do it you most likely get a 100) and 4 exams (final optional) NO extra credit
His lectures are not the most interesting content wise, but he is very passionate about the subject which helps. He is a super nice guy and wants everyone to do well in his class. All graded work was online. 5 easy assignments, 4 easy tests.
Dr. Aponte clearly loves teaching and his class is what you make of it! It's all lecture, and though he loves it when people participate, they don't do it very much because not everyone enjoys music history. The class had 3 tests and an optional final, and 8 assignments that all took me about 15 minutes tops. It's easy to do well if you show up.
Aponte is one of the sweetest teachers I have had yet. It was a fun Gen Ed class with easy assignments that introduced you to many different styles of music which I found fascinating as a music lover. He really just wants people to answer his questions and learn about the music of different cultures.
Aponte was the sweetest professors Ive ever had. He is so caring and cares for his students, especially the ones that come to class everyday. He has a passion for music in other cultures and you even learn about him and his amazing story. Gives simple assignments for hw. Take him if u have the chance
Dr. Aponte is an awesome professor and does truly care about his students. But his class is so boring! He coughs every 5 seconds and he scuffs his boots on the floor while lecturing. I would actually pray to God that his lecture would end soon while in class. Either way you definitely have to study but overall he is nice. Class work in minimal.
Out of the professors I had for music history, Aponte was definitely my favorite. The classes are very lecture-heavy and he goes on a lot of tangents, so sometimes it's hard to know what information is important. His lectures are always interesting, though, and while attendance isn't required, he will love you if you do attend and ask questions!
The most boring class I have ever taken. Every single class is just a lecture. The only good part is that all that exams are online and the couple of other assignments he has are very very easy.
Lectures are extremely boring. I went to class the first two weeks and never went after. He'll break out to play the piano once in a while though. Exams are online and a few other assignments are super easy.
Yes the lectures are so boring but I just sit there and get my other work done. He posts the slides but a lot of what he talks about isn't on there, especially with listening. I really just pay attention to what he says about the songs/videos bc the exact same ones come up on tests. Super easy class! Tests are online. 5 hw assignments each 4 point.
This class is probably the easiest class I have ever taken. Lectures are boring but the tests are super easy and there are very few assignments. Highly reccommend for any easy Gen-Ed.
This class was okay. Super easy. Lectures were very boring, but it wasn't that bad. Exams are 80% of grade and you drop your lowest one. The other 20% is where you write a few paragraphs (lowest one gets dropped). He's a good guy. OPTIONAL FINAL
He is such a nice man who very obviously cares about what he's teaching. His lectures are boring and attendance doesn't matter. His tests are wildly hard but thankfully take home. I would recommend taking him for a gen ed
Definitely recommend for music 206 gen ed. Attendance is completely optional, and he posts the notes on canvas. Class composes of 4 tests and an optional final, the tests are a little challenging but manageable. There are also 6 short writing assignments that will help your grade as long as you complete them.
Not the worst professor at JMU but very dry. He often rambles and gets off track. Minimal effort is required but go to class, you will not or barely pass if you don't. Cool subject matter but doesn't make class engaging. Avoid if you can, not worth your time.
Basically attendance is completely optional but what he says is on the tests. The only thing that goes into the grade book are 4 exams (worth 20 points which add up to 80 and take home) and 4 short writing assignments (each worth 5 points to make the remainder 20 points). Most people say that the exams are easy but be ready to know sound audios.
Aponte is a super nice and wholesome professor. Posts lecture slides so attendance is not mandatory but he expects you to attend. Very appreciative of those that do show up and tried to be as engaging as possible. Cares about the success of his students. 4 online exams and optional final to increase grade. Easy assignments. Recommend for gen ed!
Graded only on four short and easy writing assignments, four semi-hard exams (everything is online). Optional final. Thought it would be interesting but was actually incredibly boring. Posts all his slides but going to class probably would've been a lot more helpful. Attendance is not mandatory! Take if you want easy B, but not for entertainment.
Lectures at 8 am are never easy, but Professor Aponte made them bearable. He has a tendency to ramble but overall is a great guy and always fun to talk to!
Professor Aponte is such an easygoing, awesome professor. Lectures could be a bit dry, but the slides are always posted on Canvas and he'll sometimes break out on piano. A few short, easy assignments, 4 online exams, and an optional final. Definitely take for a GPA booster!
Hardest gen ed I have ever taken in my life. You must go to class, tests are scantron, and really hard to get a B.
I love Prof. Aponte. One of the easiest gen ed classes; it's definitely a good way to boost your GPA. Graded by four online take home exams and occasional assignments on Canva that took maybe five minutes max. This guy is hilarious and really likes to engage with his students. I would take Prof. Aponte a thousand times again. TAKE HIM!
bruh easiest gen ed ever, take if u need gpa boost. i lowkey never went to class but have an A becuase he posts notes online and all the quizzez r online with a cheet sheet like ur notes. (notes litteraly are on test so easy) the final is optional is u need extra boost, so good would take again. he also so sweet and loves music take himmmmmmmmmmmmm
Literally the easiest class of all time. Exams and assignments are online and you never have to go to class.
honestly really boring class, Pedro seems very interested and knowledgeable about the music but wow I never thought I could be so bored. Easy assignments and tests are somewhat easy but some of the questions have confusing answers that are up to interpretation so have fun with that. take him for the gened
Professor Aponte has really changed my college experience it has only been the third class , but my heart has already been touched by this great man. Please take him I can't wait to experience this class for the rest of the semester
Super cool and interesting dude, would recommend catching lectures even though you can easily do fine in the class not going all year. He made lectures funny and would occasionally play music himself. All tests are online, they are pretty easy for the most part, along with the few assignments he gives out.
He is a really sweet guy and is very enthusiastic. I rarely went to class and got an A. Exams are all online and you take them from home.
Aponte is such a nice and easygoing professor. Super easy gened to take for music requirement. 4 total exams (take home/online) and 4 super short writing assignments. You don't really need to go to class to be able to do well but it definitely helps to take notes off his lectures. Overall super nice guy and super easy class.
Insanely boring class, Pedro seems very interested and knowledgeable about the music but man I never thought I could be so bored in a lecture. 4 online assignments and tests that are a joke. I didn't show up after the 2nd exam and got the same grades as when I went to lecture. Take for the gened, seems like a wonderful guy to get to know
