He is...etay... cool!
He doesn't give study guides, nor proper syllabus to go by. You are pretty much on your own. Never tells us what to study for on tests nor readings. He pretty much sucks.
Do not take him unless you have to.
His accent is thick, so sometimes it's hard to understand him. When we ask for clarification, he gets defensive. Most of the films were great, and I enjoyed the novels and even the text, but he should work on his off-putting presentation.
Very hard to understand and could be tempermental. Tests are very difficult, poorly written. Good attendance and studying cannot help you pass the test. Avoid him. Very little structure.
Would not reccommend, very picky, tempermental, odd reading material, and made the students make their own copies of the readings.
LAMEST teacher I've ever had. He is incredibly unclear in what he asks the students in class & he prepares us horribly for the tests. He is 1 of the worst teachers I've ever had while at CSU. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!
I hated him and the class. I worked my hands off in preparing for one of the required in-class essays, and he STILL wasn't satisfied. Made me look like a crummy writer, which I know I'm not. None of the class material (lectures, videos, response papers, novels) had any links to what he covered in the tests. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!
he is the worst. talk about a moody man.
unclear in the objectives--no wonder 50% left the class --hard grader --high demands--arrogant
This was the best instructor I had at CSUSB. He made me THINK and ANALYIZE material. He didn't spoon feed it to the class. I was continual challenged by the course work. ?I like Santoni he doesn't put up with lame excuses from classmates. Take him if you want to learn!!
Santoni has high expectations but is fair and helpful. I learned from him and will take classes from him again and I recommend him if you are serious.
Dont be fooled. This guy is a very serious and interesting professor that has high standards but who is also one of the most helpful around. I've had two classes with Santoni and if you want to learn and take a real university level history class he is your guy. If you are lazy then not.
Challenging but not impossible. Really good structure to the class. I would take Santoni again and I recommend him but keep up with the readings.
Santoni makes class interesting every meeting and he is REALLY challenging but also fair and clear on what he wants. The loser students whine about him but really motivated students all agree that this guy is A1.
Great professor all the way. Really helpful and he cares about his students and he is always in his office.
This guy rocks! Santoni always keeps everyone in class engaged and he never wastes anytime on trivial matters and he never lets stupid students waste anytime either. He always gives superb feedback even when you don't ask for it and this really helps. Tough grader but he is fair and clear on what he is looking for.
Da' Best!
The deepest smartest professor on earth. Take him and your mind will grow and grow.
One of the best experiences at calstate was Santoni's class. This prof knows history and knows how to teach and he's a pretty fair and easier grader with everything.
Santoni is the best lecturer in the history department and he also incorporates students into some really good discussions in this class. The reading load is fairly easy and really interesting and his lectures always bring everything together. He is very patient and excellent at explaining complex ideas. I recommend Santoni and will take him again.
great class and santoni has a really cool way of doing things. he's not easy but his standards are very clear and very fair.
This is one of the best classes I've had at csusb. Santoni treats us like adults and makes each meeting interesting.
I took this class because I needed the elective and I am really glad. Dr. Santoni is such an awesome professor.
I got a lot out of this class and Santoni is one of the best instructors on the campus. He is really fair minded and patient but he does not give away A's and I like that.
Go SANTONI!
Excellent!
This was the most stimulating class I have ever had. This is the 2nd class I have had with Santoni and my opinion of him only becomes more positive. He is the most clear professor on grading on campus and his lectures are brilliant. I always learned so much from each class. Stay current, do not fall behind he has high expectations but is very fair.
Dr. Santoni is an awesome prof. He is always available and is always hepful. His grading is fair and his class has perfect. Santoni is patient if you are really trying and he does not let lazy stupid students waste class time ever. I recommend him and will take him again.
This was the best class I have ever had and Professor Santoni is an amazing professor and is in my opinion the only real professor at a university level at csusb. If you want the real deal then you will want Dr. Santoni cause he is serious about everyting and never lets anything slip by and always gives 1st class lectured and crtitiques.
this is a really good class and santoni knows how to teach the history connected to the films which are also awesome and i recomend him for anyone who is real.
good prof and good class for someone who tries. my boyfriend did more reading than i did and he did a bit better. exams are clear and lectures are interesting and he has pretty eyes 2.
Do not take unless you want to do everything yourself!!!!His slideshows have irrelevant pictures on them with very few to no notes. . I learn very little in his class if you want to learn you have to read and look for everything yourself because his lectures/slideshows don't have very concise info.He is also super picky!
NO MIDTERM AND NO FINAL BUT QUIZZES EVERY WEEK. YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK IN ORDER TO GET A DECENT GRADE IN THE CLASS. HIS LECTURES ARE A LITTLE BORING BUT SOMETIMES FUNNY
Irrelevant notes and power points are full of point less cartoon picture.Do not take this class unless you a willing t dedicate time and effort into reading the book. and studying every detail. Quizes not straight forward.
I read the other 142 review and that must be from someone in a different section than mine. I took this class with 2 friends and we all really thought it was good. Interesting lectures, brought in cool stuff that expanded our level of interest. Exams were super clear and on just what he told us. Could not ask 4 more uless you are a wimp crybaby.
7 quizzes, not cumulative, makes the class a lot easier. Uses powerpoints but only sometimes they're helpful. Shows movies, take notes on those. Read the book if you want a good grade and ask questions before the quiz
pretty easy grading style with the quizes that lets u do well overall even if u had a bad day on one. need to read and go to class and take notes cuz the quizes have material from both. good lectures that keep your attention.
SANTONI is a VEry fair and well organized professor and I recommend him if you want to study and learn but if u are lookg for the easy a he is not the one but a b is not hard if u read and study.
He's a chill type of guy so he doesn’t write much on the pwrpt slides. Take good notes! There are 2 in-class essays which aren’t bad. The reading was actually interesting; Cowboy in Caracas and La Santa Muerte. We watched movies: Maria Full of Grace and Azúcar amarga which contributed to the exams. Interesting class and highly recommend to take. (:
Great professor and I learned a lot. He give brilliant and intriguing lectures every time and has excellent structure. Santoni is Avery fair but serious grader. Pay attention and take good notes.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Incomprehensible lectures that have nothing to do with either the textbook or his power points. His syllabus goes against CSUSB minimum standards which show a narcissism unparalleled heretofore seen. Grading is undisciplined and his lack of use of blackboard makes staying on top of grades difficult.
This was one of the very best courses I have taken at csusb. Santoni is a very serious yet approachable professor so if you are not serious about your studies he is not for you. If you are looking for a prof who teaches a senior level course at the proper level look no further as he is the best. Weak minds should stay away.
Fair instructor. No textbook used but rather 3 novels are to be read. The first two each are given an inclass essay assignment no shorter than 4 pages long. The last is put as part of the final. There is also a midterm.
Great professor who made each meeting interesting and provided useable feedback. I recommend santoni and I will take him again.
Santoni is a nice guy. He is a tad bit disorganized but is very smart. The Latin film class is cool because you get to watch a bunch of interesting films. BUT there is a writing assignment for each one. This class has a lot of essays! 3 in class, 2 based on novels you choose and of course the films. He is a tough grader! Not a lecture course.
The syllabus contains more information about his personal requirements rather than the class itself. Grades essays to the extreme. Doesn't use blackboard because he "doesn't like it". PowerPoints are pure cartoons and pictures that have no direct relationship with the final or midterm. Expects a lot from students w/out providing sufficient material
Dr. Santoni has some very high standards but he does a great job explaining things. Some of the lazy students whined. I learned so much in his class and became a better writer 2. Thanks Dr. Santoni for giving a real course with real professor.
I strongly reccoment avoiding any of santoni's classes. His powerpoints are useless, and only cotain pictures and cartoons that barely pertain to material. He doesn not teach well, and i often leave class more confused then when i came in. He also doesnt use black board because hes not a fan of technology.
I earned an "A-" in this class. He was helpful to a certain extent, but he left much to be desired. He also doesn't answer e-mail at all during weekends, which can be frustrating and comes across as hypocritical that he can have a life on the weekends, but we cannot. Take a Latin American class with another professor. It's not worth the stress.
I earned an "A-". He's not very clear in his lectures or his feedback on your essays. He also won't answer e-mail on weekends because he has "a life". This is hypocritical because the course-load is such that we don't have much of a life during the weekend. If you can, take another prof to fulfill your Latino history requirement.
I was really impressed with Dr. Santoni. He has great structure in his courses and this is my second with him. He really emphasizes learning more than memorization. He is all about students developing their intellect and knowledge and writing skills and he is the BEST on campus with all of these.
He's pretty disorganized and isn't very clear all the time. He's a really cool guy though. His obliviousness to pop and mainstream culture is cute. He is a harsh grader so beware. His papers are tough but I was able to improve from the beginning of the quarter to the end.
Avoid! Santoni is really nice, but his lectures and power-points were mostly disorganized messes. He stated that he would try to cover the extensive course material by teaching thematically, but he was unable to deliver any cohesive lectures. In his defense, the course material would be difficult for even the most organized and well prepared Prof.
Really cool teacher, gives random notes so pay more attention to the films and readings. Not an easy grader but fair with comments submitted back to you on your papers. Overall, he is a good instructor, little disorganized, but very knowledgeable and makes the course more entertaining than most professors.
What a mess. He ruined Roman History, he ruined Mongol History, everything was delivered as a disorganized mess. "Has anyone read this book (pertaining to the period we were studying)? Well, I haven't but maybe you should give it a try." Its like he used a power point made by someone else. Avoid him like the plague! (which he also ruined)
Worst professor ever! Avoid him like the plague! He made a fairly interesting subject a horrible nightmare. It wasn't a history class, but an English class instead. He really was no help at all. Pick anyone else but him. Everyone disliked him in my class because his grading is ridiculous. He doesn't even know what he wants. Neg. hotness by the way.
What a great professor! I learned a great deal about the course topics AND also became a much better writer. I am so thankful that Dr. Santoni puts in serious effort at teaching history, thinking about interpretations about history and writing. Superb lectures too. And he is cute!
Santoni has a bad rap, but he's an awesome professor! Most of the people who don't like him are either lazy or aren't willing to edit their papers the way Santoni wants them. Just do it. I became more aware of my writing because of him. He's hilarious, cool, and a great professor. If you do your work and follow instructions, you're solid.
Very unclear on requirements, required multiple books only used about half unnecessary expense, and unclear grading criteria and slow at returning work.
I'm not exactly an "A" student. I normally get some A's and B's on my papers. All my papers were C's. I got help with no improvement with my grades. Read the books, do the assignments and you'll pass. Was passionate in his lectures.
he makes a interesting subject a night mare for student, not clear grading criteria, it is an elective ge so try to make it easier please.
Professor Santoni is very nice, but not the best professor. He decided to change the trajectory of the course multiple times throughout the quarter. He removed our mid-term (which isn't as nice as it seems) and was very disorganized and didn't have answers to many of our questions. Most of the students (like me) skipped many classes.
Take every extra credit that is offered it does make a difference. Two papers you choose 2 our or 4 required books, there is a 5th book but it is for extra credit on the final. Take advantage of studying the poweerpoints and notes, some of the questions are based on pieces of information you might normally overlook. I absorbed it all and loved it.
Easy class, one midterm and one final(multiple choice). Need to read 2 out of 4 books and write one in-class essay for each book. And one quiz about a Latin American map. Pay attention during lecture and you will be fine during the exams. Super easy class !!!!
Oh my gosh, do not take for any history class!! Canceled the midterm but it wasn't a good thing he replaced it with 3 take home essays on one of the three books he makes you get. 3 books are required and will be used in class on top of the Final which has a really vague study guide.
Grading criteria for essays is unclear and at times contradicting.
I learned a ton from Santoni and he made me a better writer. He is a great professor and if you care about college then he is who you want to take. He is very honest and passionate. He is a serious grader but it is clear what he is looking for. Readings are moderate and interesting. He makes you think and grow. Thank you Dr. Santoni!
Professor Santoni is passionate at his best and very confusing at his worst. He was a little organized due to problems with his office.I still found this class on the difficult side. He gives okay feedback but the lectures were hard to follow bcuz he doesn't expand on topics. I would not take him again bcuz I didn't learn much in his class.
U have to work to get the grade but Santoni makes it really clear on how to do well. He is always available and he really helped me every time I asked him for help. U have to read to do well. He is very serious about writing so b serious and u will do well. He has a great sense of humor too.
If you can, take another Latin American professor - Most unorganized professor I have ever had - all over the pace with lecture and powerpoint - gets fluster easily - does not give needed feedback if at all on papers - had to change syllabus and waited 3 weeks to give it to us - make sure you get clear directions on paper; is very vague
Dr. Santoni is the most challenging professor you will love to take and this course is one of his best. Stay on top of the readings and be prepared for all the class meetings. Grading is serious but it is logical and really helpful. Santoni has a great sense of humor and is incredibly helpful 2 qualities that also make him a great professor.
Right off the bat, Dr. Santoni loads you with essay prompts and novels. A LOT of reading and writing! He's super funny and engaging - breaks everything down to make it simple. I enjoyed going to his class, I just wish his grading and prompts were more clear. 2 papers on novels, 1 film analysis paper, essay midterm, essay final. VERY PICKY GRADER.
Professor Santoni isnt the greatest Professor out there. His PowerPoints are basically based on memes and pictures, theres no bulletpoints/notes to take down, you have to make up your own notes. On his PowerPoints he presents the slide and just talks about that slide. He doesnt really interact with the class which makes the class not interesting
Notes are nothing but pictures on the powerpoints. Lectures are boring.
Awful! His lectures are nothing but stupid memes and it doesn't make any sense. He doesn't even know how to use technology he called teach support at-least everyday. He is unorganized and doesn't teach well at all, do yourself a favor and never take this professor!
This professor tried to be funny and failed. His lectures made no sense at all because it was all pictures. His tests were about facts that were never discussed and the class was pointless. I would never take this professor again. He was not understanding and he was very unorganized.
PRof santoni is a hard grader but he goes over everything and he helps extra out of class. You have to read and take notes on his lectures.
He is the type of professor that will not just read off powerpoint but will teach based off what he remembers and by memes and pictures he has on his lectures. the online homework was no help towards the quizzes, you will not pass if you do not read outside of class
Dr. Santoni was a pleasure to have as an instructor. He does not take roll, however if you want to do well show up! Also expect to do lots of reading. He is always available to help and responds to emails in a timely manner.
Dr santoni taught the best Ge course ever. I recommend the course. His lectures are very interesting and his exams are always clear. He is very helpful and always in his office ready to help.
He does not take attendance, but if you want to do well in the class show up, the powerpoints wont make sense if you don't. He talks a lot, slides in class are mostly pictures which he emphasizes from. Books he assigns are interesting and there will be in class essays. Yes, he is a bit unorganized, but overall great professor.
Honestly, I am passionate about my major and what it entails. I understand it is difficult to make a class interesting, but this guy just isnt it. Essentially an English class, with unclear grading criteria, and little to no historical background in class. Movies and readings are interesting.
Possibly the worst professor I have ever taken in my entire college career, he is unclear in his instruction, bashes students instead of helping and motivating them, and he can be rude with his criticizing. If you want to take HIST 5840 I EXTREMELY suggest taking another professor cause Santoni is by far one of the worst.
Great class! I really enjoyed learning about colonial Latin American. Those who take education seriously will benefit from Dr. Santoni's courses. He cares about his students' learning and provides helpful feedback. Thanks to him, I became a better writer and critical thinker.
Fun and easy class to take with only a few papers and some group discussions. I liked the films and how Professor Santoni paired the films with interesting literature.
This class exceeded my expectations. The content was interesting and Prof. Santoni is well-versed on the subject. There is a lot of reading, but all the reading materials were a pleasure to read.
Dr. Santoni is very helpful. I struggled writing my first papers, but if you need help, hell will take the time and sit down with you. It sure helped me! Overall, good class and awesome professor!
This class was pretty tough. His feedback on papers was sometimes hard to read and he is very picky about writing and grammar. If you're a good writer, you'll probably do well in this class. Prof. Santoni definitely made me a better writer and the readings were interesting.
Professor was not very good at all. Lectures are all over the place, assigns a significant amount of reading as well as essays over breaks. Grades extremely hard with annoying critiques like "too wordy" after assigning high word-count requirement essays. I would try to avoid this professor if possible.
Films were very interesting if you enjoy learning about the region. Dr. Santoni is a tougher grader than other professors but he does push students to improve their writing and encourages students to attend office hours to get help on improving papers and overall writing skills. Take advantage of office hours and feedback and you should do fine!
The semester ended two days ago and he has yet to summit a single grade.
He expects English Major quality essays with little constructive feedback. His lectures are all over the place and he struggles with having a clear idea on topics. He is aggressive and not very approachable. He spits when he speaks. He does not return grade in a proper timeframe. He is a tough grader and will report you if you plagiarize at all.
Professor Santoni is an amazing professor. I took him last semester and he really helped me improve my writing and was helpful during office hours. He is tough because he's passionate about the subject. If you are serious about putting in the work to improve throughout the semester, I would recommend you take him.
Professor Santoni is generally very thorough and willing to explain whatever a student is confused by. His upper division courses treat history majors as full fledged historians. Professor Santoni expects a lot from students, but it is entirely normal for an upper division course. He is funny and shows genuine concern for the well being of others.
Santoni's upper division courses are challenging, but engaging if you put in the work. The textbook and lectures are dense, but unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of the material. Overall, an intense but rewarding experience.
