AMAZING teacher! She relates the material to things you would actually use in life and makes it very interesting. She cares about her students and is always will to help. Plenty of grades other than midterm and final to keep grades good. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Great professor. She really makes class fun. She also gives extra credit assignments. I will definitely take her again if I have the chance.
EASY CLASS!! face the facts...it's full of athletes so it can't be too bad...lots of extra credit...group tests...she drops your lowest one...all multiple choice...TAKE IT
Great teacher. Dr. Brickman makes class fun. No effort is a guareenteed B. Otherwise you should get an A.
Very good teacher. Tests were a little tricky, but I really liked the set-up of the class.
Dr. Brickman is a great professor. She makes class interesting and what she lectures is what is covered on the test. Attend class regularly and study review pages on WebCT and you will do GREAT.
Very difficult class (esp for non-science majors). Test can be very tricky. But the teacher is very nice and helpful. Biology is a hard subject though. Non-majors should take an easier biological science. No fault on the teacher though.
Brickman was always there offering her help to students, and her lectures were semi-interesting...but NOTHING said in class was easy to follow (she went on a lot of tangents) and the tests took the information from class and applied it to real life (which you DONT practice in class)..it was difficult
One of best and nicest in all of UGA! Class material reflects real life examples. Most know the concepts to do well on tests and not just facts. Grading policies are great and unique. Class is divided into groups. Tests taken individually and w/ your group. Ask her if you need anything and she'll do it. Gives extra credit. Easy to make B.
Brickman is an excellent professor – she is funny and always available to answer questions. She does a good job of explaining material during lecture. Take notes and study the book and you will be prepared for the tests. Group tests immediately follow the individual tests and provide a good way to earn extra points to pad your grade.
Very nice and funny. I strongly recommend attending class, otherwise you'll feel lost. Read along in the textbook! It's not required, but it helps reinforce what she says in class and also touches on things she doesn't. Tests about every two weeks, lots of smaller tests instead of only a few big ones. Group tests also. Lots of extra credit.
Ok, so Brickman is nice, and helpful, and gives good lectures but THE TESTS are Rediculous! The tests did not follow the notes, all application to info that you would probably only know if you are a BIO MAJOR which this class is NOT for! I thought she was suppost to be easy! What happened?
Her tests are a bit challenging but she is very nice if you ask for help. She tries to keep her lectures interesting and fun. Go to class because you miss alot when you don't.
Very nice & helpful. I would have made an A if I studied more.
*awesomeness*
I wasn't looking forward to this class because I don't like science, but she made it fun and interesting. She is very helpful and willing to talk to you after class.
Dr. Brickman is a wonderful teacher (too bad I'm not such a wonderful student... I thought the class was still kind of hard). She includes so much supplementary material in lectures to make sure you get a thorough understanding. However, the tests and mini-tests are tricky...
Award winning professor at UGA for good reason. Very helpful and extremely nice. The material is not extremely easy, but manageable with a review before each test. Class attendance and textbook readings are not mandatory, but it'd be very hard to get better than a C without them.
Dr. Brickman is basically awesome. The tests can be tricky but she frequently throws out questions that tripped a lot of people up. Attendance isn't mandatory but we're placed in small groups that rate you on your group participation at the end of the semester- group tests can help bring up your grade if you're struggling.
She teaches this subject so well. All you have to do is go to class to do well on the tests. She told us the only most interesting facts about biology.
okay i rarely went to class and never even opened the book. there was no need. i imagine if i had gone to class i would have made better than a b- but she posts all of her notes online. sometimes they dont make much sense without explanation though
I usually hate all sciences, but she managed to get me interested in the material. Very helpful, involved classes, dynamic teaching style. Great professor.
The majority of the class is based on lectures which is a little annoying if you prefer to learn from the text.
If you like structure in your classes, you will not like this class. She is very hard to follow at times. I am a A-B student, who takes very good notes and had to drop the class at midpoint because i had a F. I studied also and read the book! Her test are tricky. depending on who is in your group- the test can help you are not do anything for you
Great teacher. Attendance is not mandatory but there are a few extra credit points if you are there. Notes are online but lecture helps a lot. Tests are hard but drops the lowest out of the six. Tests are made up of 2/3 what you make and 1/3 of what you're group makes. Online quizzes are not timed.
Honestly, I didn't think she was as great of a professor as everyone told me. I didn't learn much of anything from her lectures - she was not that engaging, and her powerpoints were terrible. I actually stopped going to class halfway through the semester though and still did well on the tests. My advice is to READ THE BOOK!
Incredible teacher. I wasn't looking forward to the class at all, since I can't stand science, but she explains things very thoroughly and always manages to relate things to everyday life, so you'll actually get something out of it. COME TO CLASS! She makes more sense than the textbook.
This subject isn't all that easy. She is a good person but not that great of a teacher. Lectures are never relevant to what's on the quizzes or tests. People tend to say that this is a easy class well if you aren't good at science and went to a bad high school this class will be hard. But the point system did help my average
Hard tests. Studied too much for only the A-. Gives A LOT of extra credit. Take advantage of every opportunity. The only reason I did this well is because of the amount of extra credit points. Very do-able for a science class.
All her tests are tricky. The extra-credit helps a lot so take advantage of it. A good professor and really friendly. I recommend taking her for bio.
Very big class, but small groups make it better. Tests are pretty hard, but in the end they aren't worth that much. The midterm and final are pretty much the entire class grade wise. Do well on these, and do all the possible online quizzes for lots of extra credit. I got a solid A.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you really hate science. Her minitests are really, really hard and the groups only help if you have a good group (I didn't...) Extra Credit really helps, though. Definitely do all of the online quizzes and go to class for the occasional extra credit. (It helped me get a full letter grade better)
Attendance is not required and really isn't necessary. Just make sure to go over the powerpoint notes and the chapters before each test.
Her class is fun and interesting. She tries to teach topics in Biology that are of interest to her students, yet still teaching the required materials. She is very nice to talk to outside of class and always has time to answer questions, even though it is a big class. Tests are hard, but if you study the notes and pay attention, you'll do fine.
Class is not mandatory, but she has clicker questions that count for a participation grade. She works in a backwards manner and is often unclear. She knows her stuff, but she can't really explain things well. Tests are hard, but studying really helps, but sometimes still isn't enough.
This was my favorite class this semester. I actually looked forward to it. Class was interesting. The tests were tough, but she allows you to take it imdividually and with your group, so that does help.
Dr. Brickman does a very good job of making an other wise terrible class very interesting for non-science majors. Her tests are based on an individual and group score and lectures are online. However, I would have found it very difficult to do well without attending lecture.
Dear God is this class hard. Brickman's nice, it's not her fault this subject is utterly useless and miserable. Each test is so hard that they gave me nosebleeds. If you are required to take this course, then may God have mercy on your soul.
She knows what she it talking about and the class is pretty interesting, but her tests are impossible. You can't just know definitions or processes. Questions on her tests are in depth, and if you are not a science person I would not recommend you take the class.
Class is not necessary, but she has clicker questions. Her PowerPoints are pretty much worthless, and the tests are rarely over what she emphasizes in class. Read the chapters. Don't just skim them. She definitely knows what she is talking about in lecture, but we do not. The midterm and final were easy compared to the minitests. Good overall
You don't really need to go to class. All the powerpoints are on the internet. I was doing really well in the class until I bombed the final...I didn't think it would be that hard, I was totally mistaken. Study hard before the quizzes and exams and you will do fine.
Very pleasant. Very clear. Helped with grades at the end of the semester. All mult choice tests
Her class is pretty interesting, I was rarely bored. But her minitests are difficult (only 15 multiple choice questions). The power points don't really cover what tests are on, so you definately have to read the chapters. She is helpful, and allows you to drop your lowest mini test.
Dr. Brickman is a fantastic teacher, and VERY hard. She makes sense teaching and is super nice- then test time comes and you are like- whaaaaaat?! STUDY for the test. Or take another science- im very surprised her ratings are so high
I was never surprised by a question on the tests, I don't know what these people are talking about. My high school bio class was harder. Never miss class so you get all the clicker points (they add up to equal a test and a half worth of points); I recommend printing out her notes and adding to them in class. Never used the book and got A.
The tests' wording is tricky. She tries to make lecture fun, but most of the time she's rambling about stuff that's never on the tests. She knows the stuff but isn't good at explaining, and some of the powerpoints don't make sense. Difficult, not impossible. Attend class! Write down the answers to the clicker ?'s, and study the reviews and notes.
I am not a science person at ALL, but Dr. Brickman made this class very interesting! She is so nice and is very good at explaining things. She has review pages for every test and gives mini tests which help a lot. Definitely take her!!
Professor Brickman is a fantastic teacher. She is very sweet and enthusiastic about her class. Her tests are very, very hard though. She does give out a review sheet and a practice test before each of her 5 "minitests" which help a lot. I would recommend coming to class with the powerpoints printed and participating with the clickers!
Professor Brickman is an amazing teacher. Even though I hate Bio (no offense), she made the class interesting for me just by how I can tell she cares about her students. Fairly easy class too as long as you keep up with the reading, and show up for clicker questions.
Lovely woman, always willing to help. Lots of clickers that help you get a good grade. HERE IS THE END ALL BE ALL KEY TO HER CLASS: Study nothing else except your notes and the powerpoints for minitests. Do not waste your time reading the book unless you don't understand something. You will get A's without it. Loved it, and I am not a science perso
She is a GREAT teacher! She makes the class interesting even if you are not all that into Biology...and she also makes it relevant to you! Tests can be a bit tricky but you have a group test that can help you as well! I def. recommend this class!
Fantastic teacher. Class was interesting and about relative issues in society. However, like other said, the tests are REALLY hard. She gives a review and the group tests help, but definitely requires a lot of studying. Go to class w/ the powerpoints printed and do clickers. But I would recommend her, she is a great lady.
Best teacher I've ever had! Makes the challenging material interesting. Truly a gifted teacher.
Great teacher. I enjoyed lectures for the most part. Some of biology just can't be made interesting. She really tries to tie everything she teaches into something students can actually relate to. Attendance is semi-mandatory. You need to complete 80% of the clicker questions to get full credit for attendance. Take her, she's a good teacher.
She was nice and helpful. Some of her powerpoints made no sense to me, but overall I enjoyed going to class!
Test are unfair and very complex. You may know the info and still fail
Good teacher. I'm not very science-minded and I managed to get a B+. Her tests are extremely tricky but she throws out questions that a lot of people missed. The midterm and final are almost impossible so make sure you study. Almost impossible to make an A.
Tests were supposedly based directly off powerpoints, but some of the questions were tricky and almost impossible to answer correctly. Study the powerpoints, but luck is needed to get an A. Attendance is not mandatory, but make sure you have at least 80 percent of the clicker questions answered to get maximum points added to your grade.
Great teacher. Don't buy the book, you don't need it. Study your notes and answer the questions on her review pages to pass the tests. Minintests are tricky, but make sure you understand the concepts and you will pass. Almost impossible to fail this class. She gives lots of extra credit and test curves.
Very nice lady! You must understand the material to do well on the tests. I worked hard and got a B+
Great Professor. Actually enjoys what she does and makes class interesting. Very helpful, although Midterm and Final are very hard.
Dr. Brickman does a good job of keeping the class interesting. Her tests are not easy, but there is enough extra credit opportunities and other bonuses to your grade that make up for that. Overall, it was a pretty good class.
Explains information in a helpful, relevant way. She makes the class interesting for non-interested people, relating it to everyday life and real situations so you can actually apply what you've learned. Tests are a bit difficult, and clickers are required for class participation.
Awful, awful, awful. I am a business major taking a non-science major science class and I feel like I'm a pre-med student! The text book is next to useless and the slides in class are not helpful whatsoever. The material is not interesting and the "mini-tests" she has are extremely difficult. I would take another class, if possible.
Love her! She is so cute and was extremely helpful. The class mainly focuses on applied biology versus theoretical where you have to memorize a million terms and processes. Don't by the book, you will never use it. GO TO CLASS! and if you take good notes and pay attention you'll get an A.
Her lectures were very interesting and applicable to life. However her tests required you to know the actual concepts, not just material. The book was not much help. Class is mandatory because she uses clickers for attendance. Her tests are relatively difficult.
Tests ridiculous. She expects you to understand it as though you already have your PhD in this stuff.. Doesn't answer emails. I went to her office hours and she wouldn't answer my questions. Avoid her.
She is a good teacher, tests aren't easy, but not impossible either. Clicker points help your grade a lot. you get to drop a mini test grade, which helps. I like her grading and she made and uninteresting subject interesting.
The final is very hard and the tests are moderate. She expects you to understand concepts as they relate to real life, and does not material. This can be very difficult. Need a clicker to track attendance. Some extra credit opportunities. Overall an okay class, but she makes content interesting at least and makes the class laugh.
She makes it seem like the class will be easy at the beginning of the semester but it isn't. The test questions are really difficult and even if you study a lot, its still hard to do well
I easily got an A in this class and I am not a science person. Dont bother with the book, the important thing is to pay attention to her lectures and understand what she emphasizes. The online notes are not clear without attending the lecture, so dont think you can skip class after going downtown the night before like many UGA idiots tend to do
Ok so I really do not like science in highschool i got As in science but it was easy , i like more of the languge culture classes, hate science. Usually though I get through them but this class was just hard to understand she is a really nice lady but the powerpoints were just like scenarios/examples not the concepts and the tests were difficult.
I really liked Dr. Brickman as a person, but the class was not easy. She makes it seem that the mini tests and finals are all based on her powerpoints but that as simply not the case, I would suggest reading the book befoer all tests.

Not a great teacher. Power points, pre class assessments, and clicker questions are NOTHING like the test questions. Tests are quite difficult, however she helps your grade a lot with clicker questions (attendance in a sense), group notes, pre class assessments and peer evaluations. Sit with a group that you know will work/not slack off.
Dr. Brickman is a great person but her note taking system is the worst. Her powerpoints don't help that much and she doesn't really explain HOW to relate the material to everyday life, but that is what you are tested over.
GREAT TEACHER! SO HELPFUL! No interest in bio b4 class and now I am. She is SO HELPFUL! Make sure u pick a good group and sit close 2 front, she remembers names in 250+class, very impressive. Makes an effort 2 kno u. Its lots of material but if u have a good group u will do fine(group tests help grade). DO QUIZZES AND BONUS, they help in the end!
Dr. Brickman was a nice woman. It is obvious that she knows what she is talking about, but her lecture style was not helpful to me. The powerpoints and study questions that she presented in class were no help for her ridiculous tests. She posts all powerpoints and uses clicker questions everyday as a way of taking attendance.
Think twice before you take this course. The notetaking system is ridiculously stressful. You choose your groups before you know anyone, so you're likely to get at least one deadbeat. The tests are unnecessarily complicated ("application-based"), and the final is cumulative. Powerpoints are packed with information you won't need. Read the book.
EXTREMELY NICE PERSON. Not that good of a teacher.. Test are application based so that means no route memorization. Make sure you get every single point that she gives you with notes.make sure to RATE YOUR NEIGHBORS and FORM ALLIANCES with them! You will understand when you take this class. It truly takes team work to get an A. Book is barley used.
Dr. Brickman is not the BEST teacher, but she is really helpful. You do not have to go to class, but I would suggest it because attendance helps your grade a lot. Tests are pretty hard and are mostly from the book. Test grades are usually low but there is a lot of extra credit given.
She's smart, funny, and never patronizing no matter how dumb your questons may be.
This class is hard. Try to avoid taking it. I did all of the readings and assessments and I still failed the tests. She wants you to apply your knowledge, and she is not very good at presenting the information to the class.
I had great interest in biology. however, thanks to her, i have lost all interest and i never want to hear about it again. i studied a lot for her tests, and still failed her tests. tests are 15 questions that have nothing to do do not measure your knowledge of the material. She is very nice, but she is a HORRIBLE teacher. DON'T take her class.
It is supposed to be a class for non science majors but I felt it was just the opposite. Brickman makes it seem really easy at first but her test are really difficult even if you studied the material. The book doesn't help at all and class attendance is mandatory.
Like most have said, not the greatest teacher but it is a fairly easy class. She podcasts all of the lectures so you can listen to those to get a review of something you missed in class. The tests are a little iffy, some of the questions had nothing to do with the material but they can be reasoned out using common sense.
Brickman tells stories with all of her lessons, which can be kind of boring if you're not interested in science. Her class is not easy at all...the tests are extremely difficult and you have 27 online quizzes throughout the semester. It can definitely be stressful when you study extremely hard and still fail a test. It is hard to understand concept
Hardest tests I have ever taken. Lots of opportunities for extra credit, ad group activities and points... However just like everyone else mentioned tests are hard and sometimes you'll study and still not do well. Work hard from the beginning! Try to do your best on assessments, clicker points, and pick a good group! Must Study to pass!
Her test are like a high school level test: if you dont study, you'll get a B, if you study, you will get an A most of the time. Pick a good group since they are going to be worth about 10-15% of your final grade. she is a good teacher and best one to take 1103 with.
Her class was enjoyable. Though her classes usually contain about 300 students, it seems like it contains only about 20 students because of how she organize her class. The textbook is useless for this class because all the test is based on her podCast of lectures and her powerpoint. It is an EASY A.
I hate biology, and I still hate it after taking this class. 6 tests, 15 q's each, and you can drop 1. Doesnt take attendance but you do clicker q's in class. You only have to be in class for 80% of the q's. Do all online assessments and STUDY the notes posted on ELC by other groups - I failed the 1st 3 tests, but studied and made A's on the last 3
Dr. Brickman is an extemely nice person and is very intelligent. However, she expects alot on the tests based on the information given in class. Supposedly it's a non-science major class, but we applied things rather than learn the basics. She puts the powerpoints on the internet but aren't very helpful for later study. Don't take her class.
Class was not that hard. Tests are conceptual but pretty easy. Extra credit opportunities. The final is HARD and she downplayed it a lot. Had a 95 going into it and made a C on it. Overall a good class. I really liked her. Definitely recommend her.
Don't be intimidated by this class or by the UGAKey average. If you study and do the extra credit, you can make an A. Also, be sure to pick good group members.
REALLY nice woman, not a very good teacher. go to class to get clicker points and do the assessments. There are a lot of built in extra credit points, but the 6 tests are only 15 questions long. pick good group members!!
Best professor I've had in college. She is so nice and always willing to help you with any question. Her lectures are interesting and you don't get bored. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are clicker questions that end up being 10% of your grade if you answered 80% of them. Tests are pretty easy. I would highly recommend her!
REALLY sweet lady & really willing to help; 6 tests (lowest dropped) that are slightly tricky but not overly difficult, class is very hands-on & group based, attendance thru clicker ?s - need 80% for full credit; homework thru online assessments - SUPER easy, don't get book its $$ & you won't use, overall great class, def. recommend
Easy class. never studied or paid any attention in lectures, they were really boring. Made an A by just reading her PPTs.
I was in Brickman's "experimental" class; we had 3 group projects and 3 tests instead of 6 tests. Either way, this class is quite easy if you pick decent group partners. Sure, the tests are tricky, but the extra credit is ridiculous. In theory you could fail a test and still easily make an A.
From day one I have been lost in this class and when I ask for help she tells me to check the syllabus(doesn't help) or come in office hours (have class). I just go to get attendance credit but really don't think she knows how to get through to her students (at all).
Very easy class. I had AP Biology in high school but my group members didn't and still made A's on every test. She is a really nice lady and makes the topic interesting for non science majors. She puts up powerpoints and practice tests which make studying easier. Tests are only 15 questions and you can get help from your group.
I really wish Dr. Brickman had lectured more. She is really nice and keeps your attention. My only problem was that I felt my class was a "guinea pig" class. We had two other professors-in-training that lectured poorly. Group assignments were pointless too. Tests are relatively easy though.
Such an easy class, feels more like a high school class than anything. Never studied and barely went to class and still made an A. Group projects count as a 40% of your grade. Take for an easy life science!
This class was easier than my biology class in highschool. Group projects make up a big portion of your grade and you also have group tests.
This class was easy, the book rarely was used but did serve as a clarification for some of the lectures. Only 80% attendance was required and was checked by turning in a paper that you worked on that day. Tests were pretty easy... Group points help. If you are in the project class, the projects are easy and bump up your grade.
She rarely taught our class. The TAs were AWFUL, but she was pretty decent. I just wish she had actually taught our class like I signed up for.
I don't know why people are saying her class is easy. It's not. Tests are only 25 questions, so you miss three and you're already at a B. I read the chapters, studied the powerpoints, did the online assessments, and still did poorly on exams. It's definitely a difficult class.
This is a HARD class. I read the book chapters, powerpoints, and still did not do well on tests. I can't believe people rated this class easy; I guess she totally changed her tests this semester..
Class is not organized at all. It was very hard to find what assignments were due. Material is taught with the understanding that you KNOW biology. Tests are hard because you can't study notes or the book to prepare for the class.
This class was awful. She was my worst professor and I literally learned nothing. I had to learn all the material myself before the tests. All she does is talk about useless things during class. Her tests were then tricky. Plus, there were 400 kids in the class and she was focused on projects and group and team work instead of lecturing content.
Absolutely waste of time. She rambled on in class attempting to turn her class into an applied biology class before teaching us the material to apply. The tests were worded to trick us and the group test aspect caused conflict among the small groups
Okay,so for Brickman,it all depends on what you're looking for out of a class.I consider myself a relatively poor test taker, so in some ways, her class was nice because my grade ended up being boosted from all the quizzes, etc.The tests were unreasonable. However, if you get a good group, projects aren't bad-If you hate group projects, don't take her
She is quite literally the worst teacher I have ever had in college. The class is extremely unorganized, and it's difficult to keep up with what is going on. Her tests are inconsistent with her notes, and the notes are inconsistent with the book. She is completely unhelpful, and the class is absolutely awful.
Dr. Brickman has recently changed her class and her teaching style. I do not like the structure of the class, and old tests will not help because she changed the material that she covers. The TA grades the projects that are majority of the grade, and she grades EXTREMELY hard. Dr Brickman is a very nice lady, but I would not recommend her class for anyone wanting an A.
This was the worst class ever! She was so unhelpful and her classes had little to nothing about Biology in them! She expects everyone to understand the concepts of bio before the class.
I disagree with most of these comments. The material was incredibly easy. She focused on applying the material to scenarios such as alcohol metabolism. Tests were mostly recall. If you go to class and pay attention, you should have absolutely no problem.
She is a great teacher and is very easy. If you don't understand during lecture she will gladly help you. Also she tries to apply all her teaching to real life, which makes it really interesting.
She posts helpful checklists for each unit which outlines your assignments; you know exactly what's due and when always. She's better at explaining things one on one rather than the 300 person lecture. However the majority of your points comes from group work and "clicker questions"
I ended up with more than a 100 in the class with minimal effort and attention in class. The assignments are all fairly interesting and easy to do. The most helpful advice that I can give to anyone taking this class is to find a good group to be in. I had a great group that was able to divide the work evenly and perform well on the assignments.
Dr. Brickman is really nice and approachable and really tries to help you out but what she teaches and what is on the tests do not line up. You basically have to study everything and hope some of it is on the test. Attendance isn't taken but there are multiple clicker questions per class that go towards your grade.
Horrible teacher. Horrible teaching style. The fact that you spend the whole semester in a group and relying on a group is the worst. Avoid her at all costs.
Horrible teacher. She is very unclear about everything and assumes everyone knows what she's talking about. The whole class is reliant on group work so you better find a good group or you're screwed. Whenever I've tried to ask a question she says she'll get back to me but she never does. Avoid her
Dr. Brickman never used the textbook for really anything, so going to lecture is essential to passing the tests. She does a lot of group work, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your members. But if you attend lectures, the test are VERY easy.
Not too easy, but not hard. If you put the work in then you'll do fine. Have to come to class to do the "clicker" questions (app) which is about 10% of your grade and helped me get an A. Final is optional because your lowest test grade is dropped. Interesting material because she relates it to our lives. Don't read the readings- pointless.
I really don't know how some students do well in the class without naturally excelling in Biology. I will admit, I started slacking off and still pulled out of the class with a B. Like all others have said, she hardly EVER teaches material in lectures that relates to the exams. You can get an A with effort I suppose, but topics aren't clear.
Attendance isn't mandatory but she does questions for points in class. Going to class is pointless, her "teaching" isn't very helpful. Do all the stupid assignments on ELC, make sure the group work you turn in is good. I did fairly well on tests and had a bad group but still managed to get an A and exempt the final. Also had a free textbook
I really enjoyed her class. Yes it was a large class but she uses group work to make it feel smaller. Her class can be difficult if you don't know how to prepare for the tests. I got a 55 on the first test and was able to make an A in the class by actually doing the readings and taking notes on my own. If you do that you can easily do well in class
Brickman is a very knowledgable person. She knows her stuff. There's a lot of busy work and the group work is REALLY juvenile, but it is very easy. You can take group tests and there are group projects. It's basically advanced kindergarten. You will get a good grade if you even remotely try.
I'm not a biology person, I just never seem to understand it. That in mind, she did take the time to explain things more than any other Biology teacher I've ever had did, and will help you if you ask - key there, if you ask!
This teacher was fantastic. Although her lectures can be very boring sometimes, if you are invested in the class you will do well. She provides a lot of help if you ask for it. I think this was the only biology class i have ever enjoyed. The tests were straightforward and easy to acclimate to. Highly recommended.
Very average professor. Expectations were clearly outlined. This class relies heavily on group work and group tests. Definitely not a taxing course.
Peggy is awesome. There's a lot of assignments, but none of them are particularly hard. Group work is almost every class, there are group tests, and also extra credit practice tests. I got a B+ (literally 0.34 away from an A), and she didn't round up. Make sure you do extra credit! The other two professors are okay. Tests aren't too difficult.
She was awesome! She definitely knows what she is talking about and she makes lecture interesting. She was always there to help whenever you need it. She's also insanely fit and has adorable style.
Be sure to pick good group members at the beginning of the semester because there are many group projects and group worksheets. The work is easy but the test are a little tough. She is very knowledgeable but gets into to super specifics about the material. I didn't expect BIOL 1103 to go into such depth in so many topics. I had a tutor to help me.
The key to this class is having good group members. Brickman is a very sweet lady, but treats a 300 person lecture class like a 30 person high school class. There are endless random assignments that seem like busy work, and top hat (clicker) questions throughout class. FIND FRIENDS TO BE IN YOUR GROUP. She does a drop a test so that is good!
Like everyone else said, make sure to pick a reliable group. This class is basically one ongoing group project. There are a ton of little assignments, but they will only take 10-30 mins. This class is an easy A. Just do the worksheets, answer Top Hat, study for 30 minutes, take the practice testsquizzes, and you're golden. Requires minimal effort.
Honestly, I feel like I don't learn anything in this class. You basically have to teach yourself all the material because she does not teach anything that's actually relevant to the course material.
If the material on the tests was what she went over in class, this would be the easiest, most enjoyable class of all time. However, I'm 99% sure the TAs write the tests, and they are hands down the hardest tests I've ever taken in my life. All of the answers are correct. Not one or two, all of them. And you have to know the content in and out.
You only get one group for the whole semester. You get to take group test which help.
Brickman is okay, but beware. Sometimes she is one of THREE professors in a semester for the same class, and the other two aren't so great.
Lots of groupwork that helps your grade, if you have a good group. I got stuck doing all the work. Tests are so hard, you don't get enough time to do them, and the answers don't match up with the notes. Did so bad on the tests and still ended with an A- bc there's so much other work to help your grade. Having 3 different professors was annoying.
Not bad at all. Lots of little assignments/group work but they were all easy. Uses tophat, you need 80% participation for full credit. 5 tests, lowest gets dropped, you'll always get a study guide beforehand. I prepared for tests a day in advance w those and the practice questions and did fine. Fairly easy class if you show up and pay attention.
She teaches a class with two other people and she was honestly the best of the three. She was through, you just have to pay attention in class, which sometimes is hard to do. Almost all of the work is based off of group participation. Overall, the class is pretty easy, but you'll have to study. She was very nice and very helpful.
she's one of 3 professors. you need to pay attention in class although it was very easy for me to get distracted. my group was alright although 2/4 of us did most of the work. i failed 3/5 of the tests and still got a B in the class. i didn't do any of the readings(pretty sure no one did) but its VERY easy to get an A in the class if you study.
She isn't the only professor. There are three. The tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken. The answer choices all seem correct but the group work saves you if you get assigned a good group. Also, she uses tophat for attendance.
You really do need to go to class to do well. You might not think you are learning anything, but you will recognize stuff from class that you didn't think was important on the class.
I WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND. Mrs. Brickman is incredibly nice and intelligent. The course is not. Tests are impossible, vague, and are created by TA's, there are three different professors for the class which makes things confusing, and most of the material is self taught. If you have Hope DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. It's not a non major's course for sure.
Brickman groups students for the entire semester and with this group you will do daily worksheets, projects for every unit, and a group test for each unit. Helps bump grade up. But, this has been the hardest class of my semester. Very hard tests that are over things we have not learned in class and not enough time to complete them. Uses tophat
She is a sweet lady and a good professor, however her tests are very very tricky and hard. This class is for non-biology majors so you would think it would be easy, however this is not the case at all. Group work will help your grade if you get matched with good students.
Love Peggy! She is so sweet and caring (and dresses so cute)! The main thing I hated about this class however was the group assignments because if you get stuck with a bad group you're screwed, as well as the tests were only 17 questions are were the most subjective and hardest multiple choice tests I have ever taken. Lots of studying is necessary.
If you don't love group projects this class is definitely not for you. You get grouped into groups of 4 and that's who you're with for the entire semester. There's 5 individual tests and 5 group tests 17 questions each (Hard!!). Online quizzes before each class only have 3-10 questions and are not timed & unlimited tries. Fair amount of reading.
Dr. Brickman is a really sweet lady (weirdly fit too?) and she clearly cares about the material. The big lecture class is straightforward and the day-to-day assignments are VERY CLEARLY laid out. The group stuff is easyish. one gripe is that the tests are only 17 questions so an A on tests is tough. A in the class, however, is very easy. Take her!
Dr. Brickman is very nice and seems to know what she's doing. There are 5 tests, all of them a bit harder than the last and tricky as well. If you don't like group work, then this might not be the class for you. Fortunately, my group was okay, so the class wasn't too bad. I would recommend taking her!
She gives you many opportunities to pass the class through individual and group assignments. These homework and in-class assignments are elementary and redundant, but they give your grade a boost. Also, for tests, you take an individual and group one, and the group test grade helps a lot. I like her as a teacher and person. She's very nice.
Peggy is one of the best professors I've had. She's very knowledgeable and I felt engaged and interested in the material. Study the slides before the tests and go thru every item in the checklist (links to videos, diagrams, websites, practice quizzes, practice tests) and you can definitely do well. Group and individual assignments are easy.
Dr. Brickman is SO sweet and she obviously cares a lot about the subject and her students. She will divide the class into a ton of 4 person groups, so prepare for group work. That can suck or be great depending on who you're with. She posts powerpoints online along with a bunch of practice quizzes and resources. If you try, the class is not hard.
Group and individual works are grade boosters (in case you don't do too well on the tests). She also gives some points back (if necessary) and provide a bit of extra credit points if you do practice tests. Her lectures are specific and amazing (she uploads all the ppt and resources online). Study and prepare, you'll be good to go.
This class is entirely group based, and the group work makes up a huge part of your grade, so set up a good system early. The tests are difficult, but she provides study guides and videos to help prepare. She's a great lecturer, and the material is easy to follow. Just come to class and collaborate well with your group. Lowest test gets dropped.
If you show up and take do the TopHat questions and take decent notes there is no reason not to get an A in her class. Every grade you will get in the semester is clearly shown on her ELC page so it's easy to see how you're doing so far. Group work is the backbone of her class, do well on those and you pass even if you do subpar on the tests.
Bio 1103 is supposed to be an easy class, but it wasn't. Brickman is a great teacher and she's very nice, the issue is the tests the department writes are meant to trick you. Overall, I would recommend taking her because the tests are going to be the same no matter what teacher.
The tests were not easy, however the group projects and individual assignments are what saved my grade. The lectures are on ELC, however always come to class ready to listen, because she goes quite in depth and some of the test questions are based off what she says in class. The power points don't tell you everything, so make sure you attend class.
This was the most difficult class of my first semester. I am more of a solo guy, so when we had to be in 80 groups of 4, I was not in a good position. Dr Brickman was amazing, I loved her lectures, however I never got above a 86 on a test. However I still got an A-.
Brickman was an alright professor. She is really nice and she's always positive. However, science is NOT my thing and I was simply taking her class for credit, and I felt like it was a little harder than it should've been, especially test wise. However, my grade was saved by the amount of group work and individual homework that we had.
Do you like working in a group with complete strangers for an entire semester? Do you like a professor who thinks good work can only be completed by doing every single assignment with a group? If yes, you'll probably like this professor. Her lectures are okay at best, but boring. I relied on Google to explain what she could not. Non-stop homework.
Super easy honors option! Only three tests (open note and computer), a few online quizzes, occasional blog post, a lot of interactive activities and experiential learning. Super nice and caring, knew all of our names by the second day, makes an effort to get to know us. Super fun easy bio class for non-majors, would definitely recommend!
Tests are easy if you study, and there are practice questions on ELC for basically every topic. Practice tests for up to 2 bonus points every unit and you can usually find a quizlet. Class is mostly lecture, but Peggy is enthusiastic and funny. She assigns the groups so getting stuck with some slackers is the only real downside.
Dr. Brickman is a really great teacher. She strives to make sure her students understand the material. You are randomly assigned to groups and in those groups you complete assignments and group tests. There are individual + group tests, and the group tests are the exact same as the individual test.
Peggy is a solid choice for bio. She cares about her students and really wants everyone to do well. Class is pretty boring, no one really pays attention, but you have to go because every class there is a in class group worksheet. It's super easy attendance points.
BIOL 1103 is hard for no reason being it is a non-major class. We have to work in groups, which is fine, but we cannot chose our groups so we are working we do not know & can't depend on. What should have been a simple A turned into my hardest class of the semester.
Brickman was the best! I'm not a science person at all but she gives you so many resources to do well. She also gives lots of different types of grades, to balance it out if you aren't a good test taker. I would definitely take her class again.
Professor Brickman was awesome. I didnt know what I was getting into as I hadnt taken Biology since 9th grade but Professor Brickman made it so great. Youre put into groups of about 4 that you do most of your work with. There are 5 tests and your lowest drops. Tests arent the bulk of this class and that helps a lot.
Professor Brickman was a solid teacher for Bio 1103. She was a little bit boring and made it hard to pay attention in class, but even if you have a really low test average you can still do well in the course because there is so much group work and other way to earn points.
Great class. Very interesting, easy to get an A if you study at least an hour before each test. Highly recommend for BIOL 1103.
Really focuses on group work. Gives bonus practice tests. Helpful teacher, but tests are hard to prepare for.
Group work is all this class is. Good news is if you do well on the group stuff, you will basically get an A. I made a B average on all my test and still got an A.
A very solid teacher overall. There is a lot of group work, which depending on your character, can be seen as a positive or negative. There is nothing surprising about the test she gives, just testing concepts taught in class.
Solid choice for BIOL1103. Wasn't crazy about the tests. Only got Bs and Cs on them, but ended up with an A- in the class. Be warned the material of the class is not exciting at all, but she tried her best
Honestly not a bad choice. Brickman is NOT a good lecturer, but could be worse. If you go over the group worksheets and elc quizzes(Which aren't graded) you can figure the material out yourself. Tests were hard to get A's on, but there are so many other grades it doesn't matter. I ended up with a great group so the group work wasn't bad
Taking this class was actually a lot better than I had anticipated. I'm not very good at science but all of the work is possible to complete and she gives you opportunities to get extra credit. The tests are about average, I always got B's and the occasional C but ended the semester with an A-
Definitely have to work for your grade and study. in class participation is imperative and you do everything in groups, including a group test for each test you take.
Dr. Brickman is one of the best professors I've had. She's just really good at explaining the material & makes it so easy to understand. I've struggled with biology & hated it my whole life until I took her class; now I want to major in it. Easy to get an A in this class if you try. I actually enjoyed going to this class.
I'll be honest, she is very confusing in how she explains the material during lectures. Otherwise, the class was great. Her online organization was very easy to digest, and made class easier to attend and the material easier to comprehend. I would take her again for any class.
Great professor! However, you are assigned into a group that you're stuck with the whole semester. If you like to be part of a group, youll like this class. The professor is very organized! Practice quizzes and tests look a lot like the actual tests. She posts her presentations/class notes. Just 5 unit tests and a lot of group assignments.
Not a big group person, and you're stuck with whatever random group you get at the beginning of the semester. You take your test normally, and then you take the same test with your group afterwards, which I thought was interesting but not too awesome. The topics are all over the place, but the class is organized well.
This class was okay. The textbook was online/free so that was nice. Her lectures did not help me at all, so I usually worked on other homework to be productive with my time. There's A LOT of group work so be prepared for that. I hate group work; my group was okay, but I wish we could've picked our own group. I barely slid by with an A in this class
Peggy is a super sweet lady- goes fast over the material, so it can be confusing. You are randomly assigned to a group of 4, so you can get a good group or a bad group. You take 5 individual tests (lowest dropped) & 5 group tests with 17 questions. Could have done better on tests if I studied more, but assignments carry a lot. Uses TopHat.
Prof. Brickman was very well-versed and she was always nice. She offered many extra credit opportunities on tests. Group work for this class was very excessive. Your grade mainly depends on which group that you are stuck with. The tests are unreasonably tricky, so study the practice quizzes because they are similar to the questions on the tests.
- don't take if you cant do group work - extremely boring lectures that don't make much sense unless you did the pre-readings and pre-quizzes - overall an easy A, just have to study for the tests/take good notes/finish all your assignments
Every person in this class is assigned to a four-member group, and the class is heavily group work oriented. We used top hat, had five tests, and multiple online projects. I found it to be rather difficult for a non-science major intro biology. However, if you study the material a lot you should do well. She was a good instructor.
Her class was fine. Depending on the person, studying is definitely crucial to doing well on the exams, however, if you pay attention during the lectures, you will do well in the class. Plus, those group exams and practice tests really do help in the end. They may seem like they aren't doing anything @ first, but trust me, they help!
If anyone says this is an easy A, they are lying. This class is hard unless you like biology and understand it well. If you're not a big science person, this class is tough. You can't pick your own group which was upsetting. Brickman was boring and didn't help to make the material more understandable. It was too hard for a non-major class.
I honestly really liked Ms. Brickman and her class. If you go to class, pay attention, and study before tests, then you will be fine. I found the information interesting and enjoyed going to class.
These tests were really hard honestly, and they count a lot. But it is an easy A because the group projects and one extra credit bring your grade up a LOT. I only aced one test and made an A in the class, so don't be too scared. 5 tests (one dropped), 5 group tests, participation through top hat, and a lot of homework assignments with your group
DR. BRICKMAN IS A QUEEN I have never enjoyed or understood the material in a science class until now! She is a great teacher. If you have enough work ethic to get into UGA, this class should be easy for you. She really tries to make everything really digestable and simple, and honestly I found a lot of the material interesting. Take her!
Dr. Brickman is one of the best professors I've had at UGA. She gives good lectures, will answer questions and helps students, posts a checklist on ELC that makes keeping up with the course really easy, and offers extra credit every unit. The class itself can be difficult, as is any science class, but is infinitely better than chemistry.
Tests are more reading comprehension than they are biology related. Since this isn't a science major class she tries to make this class an applied science class. Tests are taken first individually and then with your group. Individual test is hard but easy with group cause she puts way too much information for each question. Tons of group work
As long as you get a good group, you're solid. Tests are hard but lowest gets dropped and they can't sink you if you do well with the group work and other assignments. BUT the stuff on genes and genetic testing is too much for non science majors(it's required for most majors)and they act like its all review. Not all of us are straight out of HS tho
Had to take because I'm a psych major, or I'd never take this. IT'S A DIFFICULT CLASS, BUT VERY POSSIBLE TO DO WELL. JUST STUDY. Do your pre-readings (textbook is online), quizzes, and practice tests (SUPER SIMILAR TO TESTS) and you'll be fine. DO NOT RELY ON YOUR GROUPMATES AND REQUEST TO CHANGE IF THEY'RE SLACKERS. THIS CLASS IS GROUP-HEAVY.
Quite a bit of group-based work. Class material is easy enough, but slightly boring for non-bio majors. Do the practice tests online, and the real tests will be a breeze. A decent amount of extra credit. Missing class will result in missing assignments and clicker questions, so attendance is a huge part of the grade.
The only negative of Professor Brickman's class is the amount of group work. Every unit has at least one large group assignment that have a big impact on your grade. The material is easy enough and there is a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Peggy is so helpful. This class is based off of a lot of group assignments, so getting a good group is important. If you don't get a good group, she will easily switch you into a new one. As long as you do all the assignments you should get an A. Very nice lady and respects that fact that none of us are bio majors.
I believe the most distinctive difference between this class and others is that there is a heavy emphasis on group work. You have the chance to switch groups if you need to. There are many opportunities for extra credit. I'm an English Education major and this was not a bad class at all. Do the practice tests and follow along with the checklist.
Dr. Brickman is really good at explaining the content to people that are not science related majors, or have never studied the topics before. Almost everything is done with a group of four people, so most of the assignments are really easy to get a 100 on . For every test, you take an individual& group test, and she drops the lowest of both.
Dr. Brickman is a very good professor. The content in this class is challenging, but she is good at explaining the content. Everyone is assigned to a group of 4 where you complete various assignments and projects throughout the semester. For tests, you take an individual test and then a group test. Always take the practice tests for extra credit!
Dr. Brickman is amazing!! She is so caring and funny and organized and clear about what she wants. Tons of group assignments with an assigned group but we received 100 on most. Dr. Brickman is engaging and tries to get to know her students even in the 300 person lecture hall. Not necessarily easy A, but put in the work and you'll be fine. Take her!
Professor Brickman is truly one of my favorite professors at UGA thus far. She is very caring and wishes to get to know her students better. There are A LOT of group projects, but majority of the time they are easy and fun if you have cooperative group members. She is an avid user of technology and Top Hat!!
She's an okay professor. The tests are more about being able to apply what you learn. Lots of group projects. Both group and individual tests, but you do get a drop test. Got good grades on all the assignments, but low grades (60-66) on two of the tests, and still made an A. If you do good on group and individual assignments, you should be fine.
Professor Brickman tries to make the information interesting. Her teaching isn't bad but it can get boring sometimes and the group work can be confusing. Not too hard, just a lot of group involvement and you know how that goes. Tests aren't bad if you study
Get ready for group projects! Class is kind of difficult for an intro class but not impossible. Tests are individual and group which is awesome. Brickman is super organized but projects are annoying. Lot of Tophat though which really boosts your grade. Definitely wouldn't take this class unless you have to. She's overall a solid teacher.
It was a large class but since we had assigned group members it made the class less intimidating. We did A LOT of group work which can be good or bad depending on your group. She was a good lecturer who was very approachable and came to class ready and enthusiastic 9 times out of 10. I thought she was great.
This class is such a good choice to take if you're in honors, you aren't a bio/chem major, and you need a life science. It was so chill with WS's in class and open note quizzes due online before class (but they're easy, and she will help). The tests were all open note, online in class, and the final is the exact same. Brickman is a gem & so nice!
I took the honors version of 1103, so if you're able to do that take Dr. Brickman. She's so nice and answers any question you throw at her during lectures. You also do a lot of fun activities in and outside of class. There's barely any homework and the tests are open note and everything. Just pay attention and it's an easy class
Dr. Brickman is the best! Group worksheet each day but they correlate with the power points. Takes a feedback to see which topics students want to spend the most time on and tailors the class to that. Tests are open note. Made us cupcakes and brought ginger ale during the last week of class!
Peggy is pretty fye. She goes pretty fast through lectures, I never understood anything until I taught myself outside of class. You have to show up because they use TopHat. Tons of group work but none of it is difficult. She gives extra credit. If you put in the effort to learn it yourself you'll be fine, none of it is that difficult.
for a class that most folks take only because they have to and arent actually bio majors this class was kind of difficult. she is very knowledgeable and cares about the material but her tests are harder and require a ton of brain power to maybe pass. the online materialkina helps but she expects you to understand everything to a much greater level
This is probably more of a department issue, but this class is way too hard for an intro biology class. Lectures are too fast and hard to follow, group work is heavy, tests are very difficult. I think she does her best to provide resources to help students but the material is too complex for an intro class.
I love Peggy. She is so passionate about her lectures it's so easy to stay engaged. The class itself is not that bad as long as you go to class and take some notes. It is kinda hard for an intro class but there are so many resources on ELC to help. Like practice tests and quizzes. There is a lot of group work so if you have a bad group it'll suck.
Harder than it needed to be for an intro class. A lot of group activities; hope that you get a smart group. Tests are taken individually, then as a group. I failed 3/5 of my tests & still got an A because my group was smart. 1 test is dropped. A lot of group activities outside of class too. Class is very organized & you know exactly what to expect.
Professor Brickman made this class really interesting with engaging lectures. Attendance isn't "mandatory" but she does do a lot of tophat and group assignments so you should always go to class. Tests aren't too difficult, just study and do the assigned work and readings and you should be fine!
Really great professor for this class! She's really sweet and organized, and randomly assigns everyone to groups for the semester that you'll do most of your classwork with. As long as you come to class and work well with your group members, this class isn't bad at all!! She responded gracefully to the online COVID-19 setting as well!!
Dr. Brickman is wonderful, and her class was terrific! She made the material relevant and interesting. Once the pandemic hit, our next unit was fully shifted to learning about the Coronavirus and how disease spread. She cares about her students, is patient, and is overall all a good person. I fully believe she is secretly a Hogwarts professor.
For a non-major introductory course, it is pretty difficult. However, Dr. Brickman does try her best to make her lectures as engaging as a biology lecture can be.
She is very accommodating and seemed genuinely happy to be in the classroom.
Dr. Brickman is truly one of my favorite professors. She is passionate about the material covered in class and found ways to engage students, even in a hybrid class. The tests are easy if you put in minimal effort to absorb the material throughout the semester.
Dr. Brickman is incredibly kind and caring. I liked her a lot. It was a fairly easy class except for a few test questions, which were only tangentially related to what we covered in class and scared me a little bit. If you take the class, be prepared to have no idea about a couple of the test questions. It's still possible to do well, though!
Peggy is awesome. We have class on tophat and its pretty boring. You get a drop test. A lot of homework and clicker questions. In class questions arent graded for accuracy but hw is. BEWARE there is a unit with a different teacher. ITS HARD. Save your drop test for this unit and u should get an easy A. No exam and lots of group work.
Took this class online on tophat bc of covid, we have participation questions during class but its just for a completion grade (have to answer 80% of them for whole semester to get 100). Tests range from easy to hard. Genetics unit mid semester has a diff prof who doesnt teach very well. Peggy is great tho, answers questions & cares about students
I could write a whole paper about this class. DO NOT take this if your are just trying to fulfill a requirement. While she seems nice, she has absolutely no idea how to use TopHat. The wording is painful to decipher and she loves trick questions about things you never go over in class or in the homework. This is not treated like an intro class.
While Dr. Brickman is nice, the class is unnecessarily difficult for an intro class. Easy to do well on participation and homework grades but tests are hard and pulled from different places so no one knows what to study to do well. Probably will do okay based on participation and homework, but I consistently do bad on tests even after studying
She is a very nice. So if you have no option don't be terrified. However, she, and Dr. Lewis have no idea how to work TopHat for the sole reason it is a terrible platform. I don't blame them. It is harder than a 1103 class should be, but you won't fail. Minimal effort will get a B, but it is hard to get an A because tests are sometimes worded weird
Dr. Brickman is a great person. She struggled to use TopHat, but overall the class wasn't bad. I highly recommend going to class and taking notes on what she says rather than the pre class reading as tests are based mostly off of lectures. There's some group work, and she let us choose our groups - get a good group!!!
Science is not my strong suit by any means but this class was. Little harder than expected. The practice test didnt really reflect what I saw on the real test and it seems that some material was not reviewed before the test. I know this is college but be ready to go way above and beyond.
Peggy was very nice, but the tests and the homework she gave did not match very well. Her and Dr. Lewis are terrible with TopHat, so expect some technical difficulties often. This class is not terrible, but I feel it was way harder than what an intro level course should be. Go to class so you can answer the in-class questions for credit.
Dr. Brickman is an experienced professor. She clearly knows her information. She did however struggle throughout the semester with TopHat (not her fault), but the exam tests she created did not always match the highlights she focused on in her lectures. This class is doable but fairly difficult for a beginner non-science bio class.
Dr. Brickman is a very nice lady outside of class. But her tests are way harder and sometimes don't match the material that she lectured about. TopHat was the platform used and while it is a stupid platform she didn't know how to run it which made the course a little difficult. Too hard for an intro 1103 course.
Peggy Brickman might be one of the sweetest professor's I'll ever have in college. She's so caring and understanding of her students, especially if you're in her smaller class. Be prepared for daily class assignments that are overly complicated and eat up the whole class time. Her tests are pretty bizarre too.
Dr. Brickman is fantastic- very kind, understanding, and passionate about biology. I wasn't good at bio in hs, but this class was great. Cool concepts, and the grades were made up of assignments, pre class quizzes, discussion boards, and tests. The tests were challenging, but open note, and the assignments were easy, especially if you go to class.
Best teacher Ive ever had in my life. So inspirational, and wants you to love Bio, not worry about the grade. She is so sweet, and answers questions/emails thoroughly and fast. Tests are open note, somewhat difficult but not too bad, but (be prepared to not know some questions). Pre-class quizzes each class. 40% class work 30% tests.
Worst professor I've had at UGA so far. For a non-science major who had to take this class, she made it much more difficult than needed to be. She was very nice and her lectures were not bad, but the exam questions rarely, if ever, lined up with what she actually talked about in class. Would avoid taking her if at all possible
Brickman clearly cares about Biology and students. She is a genuinely nice woman who gives good enough lectures with good pre-class work. While I liked that we had lots of things to be graded on, tests in this class were extremely difficult for a 1000 level class. My Biochemistry Major girlfriend had to help me study and tests were still rough.
Genuinely the most mind-numbing class I have ever taken in my life. If you are not a biology major, be prepared to do the most busy work you can think of for a prerequisite class. Avoid at all costs if possible, but unfortunately that is not an option for many majors at UGA. Good luck, you're going to despise every second of it.
I overall liked her - you have assigned seats and work with the same group all semester but it wasn't bad -attendance isn't mandatory but there's a lot of in class assignments -the tests are pretty rough, study and take notes on pre class readings and lectures -each unit has a unit group project but as long as you try your best you will get a 100
5 tests and lowest one gets dropped. Assigned seating with random group entire semester. Tests are on tophat and proctored. She uses tophat for attendance but you can complete tophat questions at home. The tests are not easy. Group projects she grades fairly easy. There is pre class reading before each class on tophat that helps boost your grade.
Mrs. Brickman was a great professor. She assigns reading assignments as homework, but they are used to teach basic material that she'll go over in the lectures. Most of her lectures are about real-world stuff, so it can be interesting. There's five tests, and she drops one. The tests are mostly over the real-world stuff talked about in the lecture.
The tests are hard, but the homework is easy. You are put into groups and mainly do group work during class. Her lectures are interesting and are available online as well. She also has a zoom option, but it is better to attend so that you can work with your group.
This class is not difficult as long as you study and do the homework. Most people get bad grades because they fall behind on one of those things. However, Dr. Brickman is an amazing professor and her lectures are super interesting. A lot of info on the tests are in the readings as compared to the lectures, so make sure you study those.
I loved her class and enjoyed the group work sometimes. She is a very nice lady and will help if a problem occurs. There is way more homework than there needs to be though and a lot of tests.
Dr. Brickman and Dr. Lewis's 1103 class is for the most part a walk-in-the-park. The only moderately difficult things are some of the group assignments, but they are not hard if you and your group work on them diligently. Attendance was not mandatory, you just had to answer the TopHat questions during class time slot. Exams are straight-forward.
Attendance isn't required as long as you completed the tophat questions during class time. I got three C+ on the tests and one 90 but I still got an A- in the class. Make sure to do well on every other assignment and you will end with an A- if you aren't the best test taker.
This class isn't too hard as long as you study and stay on top of readings/assignments. Group projects every unit that are graded pretty easy as long as you put in effort. The lowest test gets dropped, and even if you average B range on tests you can get an A in the class because theres hw assignments and in-class participation questions.
While I got fortunate with my assigned group members, I've heard many horror stories of inconsiderate group members that have worsened their overall group work grade. Many times, TopHat glitched when grading exams and practice exams, and she would not lift a finger to go back and correct the answers. She seemed like a nice lady, but extremely lazy.
I found the tests to be very difficult, but others didn't struggle as bad so I'm not sure. Not a very hard class other than the tests, very possible to get an A in this class. Lots of group work, pre-class assignments, and stuff to help your grade. Drops lowest test grade and tests are online proctored.
The tests are the only difficult thing about this class, getting an A is definitely doable if you put in at least the slightest amount of effort (which I did not do). Overall I would recommend not taking the course if you do not have to (mainly if you are a non stem major taking it for a life science credit) because there are easier options.
I know nothing about bio but I still managed to get a high A in this class so that says a lot. A fair amount of group work and she lets you drop a test grade.
Dr. Brickman's lectures were boring, and she tended to ramble about unimportant or uninteresting topics. She gave a lot of group work, but was not very effective in mediating group problems. That being said, Dr. Brickman is a kind and fair professor that isn't out to make your life miserable. She also gave a decent amount of extra credit.
Dr. Brickman was a great professor for this class. She's very passionate about the topic and you can tell that she enjoys teaching the class. Class sessions usually consist of a combination lecture/assignment and have pre-class readings and quizzes assigned through Codon Learning. There are a couple field trips to fulfill the service learning.
she doesn't explain basics. We're learning about Epigenetics and idek what it means she never gave us a definition. The lectures are not helpful; nothing she says in class makes sense, slides contain little info. Entire semester is group work. still dont know how to study for tests even after asking her for advice - tests ask about most random info
The class is pretty easy but having a good group will make it basically impossible to get below an A-. They're randomly assigned so there's a little bit of luck involved. It's a very collaborative class so you wanna show up to not piss off your other groupmates. Your relationship with them will definitely have an impact on your grade.
peggy is like a facebook mom. she uses random cnn articles, youtube videos, and goes on tangents about random studies done on obese mice. she doesn't really teach the basics. group work is all that you do in this class, which is really annoying. i wish lewis was the primary lecturer because he at the very least provided the basics.
She is a good and passionate professor overall, but this class is way too hard for an intro bio class. The content is all over the place from unit to unit and tests are 50% of your grade. Seriously!? The group projects are good (assuming good group) and there is many opportunities for extra credit in this class which is great. Don't learn from lec.
The class itself is a mess, content comes from a bunch of other bio class and real world analysis which makes sense to a certain extent. The professor isn't bad at all, again as long as you pay attention and really try to understand, you can easily do well.
idc what the other reviews say. this class, bio 1103, was not bad at all and there is a decent amount of extra credit. but you have to WORK for it. study, do pre-class quizzes on time, use chatgpt if you need help. peggy is an ok lecturer... kind of messy tho. if you dont go to class, have ur classmate write ur name on the sheet for u. easy peasy
Other professors make this class easy, however this was NOT the case with Dr. Brickman's class. This is a class for NON Bio majors however the content was all over the place and much harder than it needed to be. This class is extremely group work heavy. Her lectures are all over the place and the test are WAY harder than they should be.
I would like students to know that if you need a science credit to take a different class. This was the most abnormal class and the tests were extremely difficult and out of the ordinary. The codon and study path homework assessments do NOT prepare you for the tests. Please take a different course, trust me.
This class was so hard for no reason. The tests are only 18 questions, and I got C's on most of them. I studied for two days straight and knew the content so well, it didn't help. She doesn't prepare you and the lectures are all over the place. She is every educated, but this isn't the class for non-bio majors. Take an easier science credit.
This class was tough for being intro. The content is pretty difficult if you didn't already have an understanding of biology. Professor Brickman is knowledgeable on the content, but her lectures were often hard to follow. However even if you don't do well on the tests, she gives a lot of group work and extra credit that can raise your grade a lot.
Dr. Brickman's lectures are interesting to follow, her tests are easy if you pay attention during class and read her PowerPoints; They are not based on memorization, you need to apply simple concepts. There are additional readings available if you want more in-depth understandings of the topic. She provides lots of extra credit and curve tests.
She's great! Pay attention to homework assignments and MAKE SURE YOU DO THE STUDY PATH!
This class is so badly structured it's comical. Codon might be the single most useless learning platform I have ever encountered. Of course, any class with mandatory attendance should come with ample warning, but this class pushes the boundaries of what a clueless professor can implement under the guise of usefulness for learning.
The first day of class we were briefed of it's group oriented nature. A group project here or there is permissible, but group busywork every single class is asinine. Her reason cited for the amount of group work being assigned was her own son's social ineptitude. Should tell you everything you need to know. Not hard, just a remarkable nuisance.
Dr. Brickman was a good teacher, but the in-class worksheets were basically just busy work and I didn't feel like they helped me learn the material. Classes aren't even really lectures, and I got most of my information by doing the readings for the pre-class quizzes on Codon. Overall, she's okay, and if you can take her I would say go for it.
Professor Brickman is a nice and passionate lady. However, her power points are not very helpful and her lectures are quite boring. My least favorite part about the class was the group work. Heavy group work. If you do not like your group good luck! But, the tests are not weighted heavy. You can get a C on every one and end the class with a B.
She was very nice and passionate about the material. But, her lectures were not very helpful in preparing us for the test. The tests were difficult and her study guides contained material that she had not gone over in class or in the pre-class readings. There was so much group work and group projects every unit, which sucked if you had a bad group.
This class is completely based on group work and group tests so if you have a bad group, good luck! Attendance is mandatory with group worksheets that are just busy work each day. She is very demeaning if you ask questions and her slides are all over the place with no organization. Also, tests are only 18 questions which easily drops your grades.
Within the first week of class your randomly assigned a group. Yall work together on in class worksheets. She goes fast through the lecture given how much stuff is on a slide. I got most of my info from the study path on codon and from pre class stuff. Some of your test grade is from taking exams with your group which usually gives a higher grade.
She goes very fast through lectures given how much content there is and the lack of clear, organized information on the slides makes it hard to self study. Attendance is mandatory and most of the grade is based on group work. She is extremely unwilling to help you and condescending if you have questions or concerns regarding the content or class.
Professor Brickman was very passionate about what she was teaching. I will say the tests are pretty difficult, considering this is an intro bio class. She made an easy class and a rather tricky one. The only reason I was able to pull through with an A- was because she offered 2 extra credit opportunities and dropped your lowest test grade
dr. brickman is really nice and always tried her best to help me when i had questions. the class is pretty difficult especially considering it's for non-bio majors, but if you just do the study path questions over and over you'll do fine on the tests. the group projects were frequent and annoying but not too bad depending on the group dynamic
She does not inform students on how to study properly for class. Students are unaware of what will be tested on the exam and end up studying an excessive amount of content. She should create a study guide similar to the test to helpful. The tests had 20 questions and you took it by yourself and with your group.
The class is group-heavy, but passing is achievable if you engage with the content and use helpful study tools like unstuckstudy ai alongside class materials. Professor Brickman is nice, but the disorganized lectures can make self-study challenging. Overall, it's a manageable course if you're willing to put in the work.
Professor Brickman is a solid lecturer, with the class focused mostly on group work and online assignments. If you have a good group and stay on top of the assignments, you will most likely get an A.
Dr. Brickman is a fantastic teacher! Most days she would lecture while we completed group assignments. There were also hands-on activities like creating sites outside for the Caterpillar Counts program. Lots of grades are for completion, and the tests were open-note/open-Internet. She truly wanted to see her students succeed.
attendance is not mandatory, BUT in-class online assignments open at the start of class and are due at the end, but u can do them wherever. also usually have preclass quizzes due at start of class. tests are mid hard but doable and are only weighted 12.5% each, uses group tests and projects too. makes content relevent to daily life and intresting
I love Dr. Brickman!! She was always VERY understanding, and she didn't make you feel stupid for having questions/getting something wrong. The class content was just a little difficult for me personally, but overall the test aren't too bad, and one is dropped. She also doesn't require attendance. TAKE HER!!
BIG emphasis on group work. Same (random) group for the whole semester. Super understanding and is open to questions and concerns, but her lecture is sometimes confusing. Tests are (IMO) very easy, and plus one is dropped and you get to take it with your group after submitting your individual test. Attendance is not mandatory, but do your codon!
This class was oriented around group projects and working with others. If that is not your forte, you may want to choose another class. There isn't a ton of homework, but there are mini-quizzes that have to be done before class. Your grade is mostly dependent on how much you study outside of class, but her lectures are helpful. Go to class!
Class was really just a waste of time, weird due date times, overall, a rather weird experience...
Dr. Brickman is so sweet. This class is really simple. She uses codon and there is really no need to go to class except for the group stuff. The tests are both individual and group. Whether or not you like and do well in this class is dependent on your group. Not a hard class, but super random and I don't feel like I've really learned anything.
Attendance is only mandatory when you need to do a group project. Codon is used heavily in this class for the pre-class and homework assignments which can be done online, but she will give you the answers to the homework if you go to her lecture. There are individual test and group test which help boost your grade if you have a good group.
This class is made for people who need a science and aren't stem majors so it is perfect for people who aren't the best at science. Lots of group projects but they are graded easily. There are also a lot of cushion grades for the tests by other assignments.
This class was very group orientated. The lectures weren't that useful imo. All the slides are posted online in Codon, and the material is easy enough to learn it on your own. If you get a bad group your group test and group project scores are low-key screwed. There is a few EC opportunities. The exams are 20 questions which is decent.
Everything is on Codon. Lectures are lowkey useless and ppl usually stop coming to them after the first few weeks. She does group tests and and individual tests. Not that hard. Just study the codon materials and lecture slides and ur good. this class requires very little effort.
Very passionate but a bit all over the place in terms as to what is expected on tests. Her slides can be very confusing by themselves and can focus too much on the "less important" things. Very boring class but attendance isnt mandatory. People stopped showing up to class mid-semester. Do the codon work and group projects youre good.
Dr. Brickman is very friendly, and the course was easily understandable to me as a non-bio major. Attendance isn't taken, but Codon homework is only open during the class period. A lot of group work, but everything is a pretty easy 100. Codon is slightly janky, and she doesn't change grades, even when the system marks correct answers as incorrect.
Once you get the hang of the format the class is very easy. One test is dropped and many homeworks are too. The most important thing is to have a good group because there are a lot of projects. Ended with a 98 and only showed up twice in the last unit because the in class work could be done outside of class online.
Online course during the summer: The modules are laid out since the beginning, and her expectations are clear. end of module assignments can be a lot sometimes, and its difficult to do them last minute. She gives you a week to complete everything, even setting up days and what to do for each day to give you some kind of pacing. 8/10
Great course! Def a lot of work in a short time for the summer course but doable. Make sure to read assignments early on as sometimes directions can be confusing.
LOVED HER AND THIS CLASS! Tests are open note and open internet. In class you complete group worksheets. Professor Brickman is truly an incredible human being. She rlly made an effort to get to know us. Grading is fair even tho Codon is annoying. Even tho attendance isn't mandatory you need to complete the in class assignments when ur absent.
