Dance 153 (aka Asian Am. 153) is a wonderful ethnic studies class to take. You learn Tai Chi, Mediatian, and Wushu (which is martial arts). Teaches acceptance of others by a literal "hands on" approach. Small class size, and readings are not too bad (teaches about WWII a lot).
Very good teacher for dance/asian american studies 153. It was a great class to take for ethnic studies. She offers a lot of extra credit opportunities.
one word feedback - "FUN"
Professor Choy is awesome! This class is so much fun and an easy A, and it fulfills your ethnic studies (crosslisted with Asian Amer studies). I took her 3 week summer class, and thought the expectations were extremely realistic. She really wants her students to do well and is passionate about what she is teaching. Take this class!
Super easy class! Do what she wants you to do, then here is your A! Few reminders 1) Mandatory attendance 2) Don't be stupid 3) it's super-fun!! Don't get stressed out when you are not doing so well in this class because she gets very generous at the end w/ extra-credit!! Highly recommend taking it during summer. =)
Peggy was extremely confusing when when explaining anything regarding assignments, performance exams, etc. I took this class because it sounded fun and interesting, and the professor seemed to have great reviews. However, I ended up disliking the class and it was 100% because the professor was terrible.
Don't miss a class, do all the homework(required reading and video-watching), and practice outside of class, you will get an A.
Peggy Choy is a wonderful teacher and dancer. Although she may come across mildly strict at first, she is very helpful and kinda. She will definitely expect you to put effort into class, but you will want to because her passion for dancing shines through. Along with Javanese dance, you get to wear the costumes, and play the Gamlan
If you are just taking this class for an easy ethnic studies course, think again. Professor is extremely unorganized, I was confused on assignments and due dates more often than not. Feedback is constantly given, but rarely positive. Class is not hard, but dealing with the Professor is hardly worth the easy grade.
Prof. Choy expects her students change their characters toward the direction she want. Part of her grading points are on how you find a new self, which is what I don't like. Some of my classmates have dance experience so they got better score for performing. You have to follow her confusing instructions for homework, otherwise u get low score.
I took this class during the summer and it's intense, not sure about the semester but as long as you finish the homework and follow the instructions you will get a good grade, prof. Choy is a really easy grader. She may appears to be very strict at first but she is really nice and helpful, hands down the easiest ethnic studies course you'll find.
Take this class! I'm the worst dancer ever and I think slightly tone deaf and it didn't matter at all. In the end Professor Choy was super impressed with everyone's hard work and gave us 100%'s on everything. It can be a lot of reading but its definitely not necessary to complete the readings. My class was really cool and overall it's so worth it.
Peggy is a mostly great professor. She is very passionate at what she does, wants her students to succeed, and creates a good team environment in class. However, she is sometimes unclear on structure and is very set upon her own ways. Her feedback varies in helpfulness (yet is always there) and sometimes suffers from lack of direction.
She is passionate about dance, and wants to see her students succeed. But she is very disorganized and half the time nobody knows what's going on or what is due when. Basically, just pay attention and do what she asks you to, and you'll get an A - it's not hard, just tedious. Don't get on her bad side (using your phone, talking when she is talking)
Professor Choy was really unorganized and inflexible and we were always confused about assignment, grading and schedules. She assigned extra credit two hours before the event that required to be attended and canceled the extra credit opportunity on the due date of submitting final grades. Feel really frustrated to take this class.
I got deduct a letter grade because I "was seen having my phone in my pocket". I have my phone on me because I was performing that day. Besides that I never turn on my phone , it sits in my pocket. And ofc she's not responding to any of my emails. If you want to experience the worst worst worst class in Madison, make sure u didn't miss this one.
She gave confusing HW and leaded useless & awkward group discussions. Her homework is full of anti-intellectualism. She wanted you to combine material arts, dances from different culture, and irelavant AsianAmerican story into a single dance, and asked to write feeling the energy of trees by touching. Grading in the very end harshly without reason.
Professor Choy is an awesome performer, teacher, and potential mentor. She seems a bit intimidating and strict at first, but she really isn't and is very patient. So long as you show initiative to learn and show effort, she'll help however she can. Though her instructions on assignments are a bit confusing, don't hesitate to ask for clarification
Professor Choy gives low grade to your assignment due to small details. She starts to take attendance 5 minutes before the class begins so that many people were affected by the attendance grade. She is strict and you may lose many points on some small mistakes.
Professor Choy's lectures are useless and unorganized. I don't think she has thoughts about what to do in each lecture. Almost all the homework should be done after class. Points may be deducted because of small details. Never never never take this class!!
the lack of organization in the class is terrible. not a challenging class by any means, but she likes to change the syllabus and expects students to know due dates when she doesn't know them herself. random assignments will take an absurd amount of time but be worth no points, and expects a lot of time to be spent on your final outside of class.
Prof Choy is clearly passionate about what she does! There were a few times she pushed around due dates and really drowned us with assignments for a 3 credit course, but overall, I learned a lot about dance and race in America. She also gave extra credit, which could be very useful for people whose grades were effected by mandatory attendance.

Very passionate about Asian and Afro culture. I loved the community of people that she created in class. Expect to spend a few hours outside of class on rehearsals and writing assignments each week. She can be a tough grader on written assignments. Can only miss 2 classes or grade will drop a letter. If you put in the work you should get an A np.
I loved her class and it was easy to get an A. Instructions can be unclear at times so make sure you ask if confused. Sometimes forgets to update or post assignments on canvas ahead of time. Harsh grader on written assignments. Dance unit tests are easy if you practice. No written exams. Put in the work (sometimes a lot) and you will succeed in 319
very rude and made me not want to come to class. Should have been an easy class but she made it miserable and gave wy too much work for what the class intended.
The worst professor I've had in four years. Her grading is inconsistent, and directions are vague, leaving students confused. She penalizes students for leaving class early but leaves early herself. Her lectures are poorly organized, repetitive, and unhelpful. Overall, an incredibly frustrating and unfair experience.
awful. disrespectful to students. plays favorites. got a zero on an assignment, she told me to redo it for credit then never graded it. the class itself is kinda interesting but she makes it WAY too much work. terrible at communicating assignment details, so inconsistent, then gets mad at the students when they dont do it the way she wants
Worst professor in my four years. Completely condescending; more focused on asserting herself as an expert than teaching. Actively discourages participation through her stubborn, unenthusiastic demeanor. In-class instructions are unclear. Posts assignments late w/o changing the deadline. Uninspiring class discussions; shuts down students' ideas
