Finance 317 sucks, but Peggy's sense of humour made the horrible material bearable!
She is the most uncaring teacher you will ever meet. Talks with a condoscending tone of voice and treats students like crap.
DAmn, that test wasn't as hard as I thought it would be! And I still did bad! she's a good prof! i think the guy below me is just bitter that she owned him too! hahaha!
Peggy is a great professor. Unlike some other proffs I can point to, she is fair and only tests on the things she teaches. As long as you do the exercises that she recommends, there wouldn't be any surprises in any test. She doesn't suffer fools gladly...
Peggy was an amazing prof who really wanted the class to do well but at the same time she challenged us to learn the theory and make use of it, not just plug numbers into the calculator.
Anybody that thinks Peggy cares about you at all is delusional. She is as cold as ice, has horrible handwriting, and tries to dump way too much information in our brains, making it a jumbled, horribly overloaded and extremely confusing course.
Missed the final because 1st cousin died and had to go home for the funeral. Apparently not a good excuse and had to go all the way to the dean to get a deferred exam. As soon as he heard the story and my proof he said she was unfair.
Peggy was great. All of those hating on her are wrong in the sense that she isn't responsible for the difficulty of the course. It's a full year course condensed into a semester. Hopefully the administration will do something about it but she does the best she can considering the circumstances!
Peggy is a cold humourless woman who has been using the same terrible jokes for years. I do not hold it against her that the class was hard, but she could have done a lot better trying to make it easier. instead all the lectures were extremely confusing and horribly boring.
Slawinski, Lakra, Oliveros, Moldovan, Cooke. Don't join them....she has joined them. Another unacceptable prof, oh JOY! Habitually tardy, never enunciated clearly, told unfunny "jokes" (two-handed lawyers named Shirley??), and frivolled away 30-45 minutes of EACH LECTURE with "current events". The group project was poorly planned and hastily thrown together at the last minute. At least a Russian hottie always sat next to me, giving me something interesting to chat with and look at …hell, she was the only thing that kept me going to this meaningless class. This course was analogous to paying $459 to have an A grade handed to you, and (not surprisingly) I didn’t learn a damn thing.
I think that she is a good prof and moderately funny. However, this class is ****. THere is way too much material for one class!!! If they divided this class into 2, then it would be FINE!!! But Peggy is really not that bad. THere could many worse profs teaching this class.
This prof does not teach anything - if you take her class, you better plan on teaching yourself the material. She babbles on about useless s**t and tries to make useless jokes, but never goes through any examples or actually explains what's going on. She should really be let go.
I'm not going to lie, Peggy WAS a good prof. She explained concepts the best way possible and provided really good class notes. However, this class was ridiculously hard. Even if you understood the material, the exams were too long and too hard. I did enjoy learning the material.
Although this class is one of the hardest 317s in the faculty, Hedges makes it as interesting as possible! Her dedication to her students could be questionable... but it's more like, if you go ask her something unprepared, she won't be very happy! so if you have a problem on a question, make sure you try it first. Great Prof!
Peggy is one of the best profs in Haskayne. Honestly, although finance 317 may be a nightmare for some people, it's not as hard as everyone made it out to be. If you do all of the practice questions, sign out a previous midterm/quizzes from the MRC, it will be an easy A- (at least). She was also very humourous, although corny =).
Nice professor, but really you have to teach yourself, and get quizzes bought from past exams in order to understand the material. She moves too fast and thinks people have grasp the material. Too much material that is not clear, like 3 courses in one class.
You really have to learn this on your own, read the notes before going to class other wise you will be confused, if you have questions she will help you but try it on your own first. The class is hard, but not as hard as people say, do the practice quiz and midterm/final and make sure you understand every question and you will pass.
Love the corny jokes. People that complain that the course is too hard probably didn't do the pre-course work. DO IT. Get a hold of the TVM basics before class starts and keep on top of it. As Peggy says, the second half of the course is easy, its just the first 1/2 thats hard. Keep on top of the TVM and you'll be fine. And do the old quizzes.
I liked Peggy, her humor is great, and she's good at explaining concepts clearly. The quizzes are good, but her midterm and final are brutal, the questions are fair but they arn't easy and the number of calculations needed for each question makes time really tight.
She was a good teacher who unfortunately has a lot of material to fit into one class. The final is pretty hard make sure you study.
HORRIBLE! Worst prof I have ever had. Difficult to get along with. Inflexible and very stubborn.
Do not take the quizzes as indicators of how well you will do on midterms or finals. They are brutal in comparison. Do the practice tests included in notes text they are her model for real tests. If you do not know how to go about answering tests in practice quickly or need to look things up often in pratice you will probably fail.Just being honest
She made class fun. There was never a dull moment and I learned a lot. I actually remember most of what I learned as well. Just shows how well Peggy helps you understand the material.
Humor was great, go to the tutorials because they were the most helpful and quizes and midterm were not hard because they were OPEN BOOK, but the final was brutally hard
Since there are only 2 professors Peggy and Larry teaching this course and they are both great and funny, just choose whoever fit your schedule. All exams are open book cuz there are a lot of materials need to be known. Hence, attend class [to do good on theory questions] and do all the practice tests.BTW,tutorial is extremely helpful!
Don't get me wrong - everyone knows finance is a difficult and fundamentally broken course (they slammed two courses into one and tried to teach it in a short time frame). Peggy is at best an average communicator. I learned more from sitting on my own than ever attending any of her lectures.
I like Peggy as a person but I didn't connect with her teaching style. Learned a lot of it on my own by going through the notes, and Ursula who teaches the tutorial is awesome! The final was hard, I feel this class tries to be extra difficult and it requires a lot of time put into it. The theory questions are a joke.
It doesnt matter who you take Finance with cause either way you have to pretty much work your ass off. As for the final, it's tough but not brutally hard. In fact, I did better on the final than the midterm and the quizzes. Make sure you UNDERSTAND how to do every question on the sample final. And, you should be set.
Peggy is a pretty good prof, but you need to attend every class and every tutorial. The class is hard, but Peggy is easy to get ahold of and will explain things well. Do every question you can and attend everything and you have nothing to worry about.
The course itself is easier than people make it out to be. As expected with any university course, do the homework and you'll do fine.
Peggy is a no-nonsense type of prof; she will help you out if you are struggling and she'll destroy you if you slack off. Likes to crack up at her own jokes a lot. Overall a good prof for finance.
Dislike her teaching style. She speaks so fast and her hand-writing is poor. This course is extremely hard, better to put A-effort to get a B+. Attending every class and tutorials is necessary!
bottom line? Her jokes arn't even funny...
Has a very dry sense of humor and a no-nonsense outlook on getting schoolwork done. If you keep up with the TVM and course text book, you should be fine.
I think the course outline should say "tutorials are all mandatory and please do not waste your time to attend Peggy's lecture"!
Peggy has boring lectures, messy hand writing, and tends to pick favorites with people who actively participate in class. She tries to joke around to lighten the mood, but isn't quite as engaging/entertaining as Larry. Attend all classes and tutorials if you want to pass.
Attending tutorials is a must; Ursula will save your butts when it comes to quizzes and exams. Peggy assumes you have some knowledge already of the material, so she zips through the material. Writing hard to read, but she does try and engage the students since most are discouraged by the fact that the class is mandatory.
I really liked Peggy, was clear in class. The problem with 317 is the amount of material really steepens the learning curve. It used to be 2 courses...they should go back to that. Go to tutorials, and like any FNCE class, PRACTICE QUESTIONS!!!!
Not hard to do well in her class, if you put in effort. I don't understand what other students mean by "picking favourites", because nothing you do during class time reflects in your grades. She's clear in her teaching, but goes a little too fast, I have to spend a lot of time reviewing. I can see myself finishing this course with an A.
As said below, there is no opportunity to "pick favourites". Peggy is not a bad professor. She is clear, nice, and her handwriting is not bad. Also, her jokes grow on you. My advice: complete as many practice exams as you can and you should have no problem doing well in this class. Also, buy the course notes but not the textbook.
Watch out... Dr. Hedges does not cover the material in the same depth that is tested on exams. There is a reason that the class average is a C-. It's possible to do well, but you'll often have to consult Google to solve practice questions, or go to office hours. She was also very rude to me when seeking assistance.
Attend class and do the work in the book. If you keep up on TVM and the class notes you should do fine. Do a lot of practice exams and attend all tutorials. Ursula will save you. A lot of the practice exam material show up in the midterms and finals.
Peggy is such a nice lady, she explains a difficult subject in a way that's comprehensive and takes the time to prepare you for the quizzes and finals. I'm so happy I was able to take a course with her. I 100% recommend anybody to take FNCE 317 with her.
Peggy is an excellent instructor. She has a great sense of humor that makes it easy to always attend class, which is very helpful. The class isn't easy, but if you work hard and ask questions, you'll do fine. I highly recommend Dr. Hedges.
The material itself is somewhat dry, especially if you are not on top of things and are not following, but Peggy is a great prof and extremely helpful. I also found her jokes funny, but no one ever laughs in class - I wonder if it's because everyone was sleeping or not paying attention. Do your work and keep up with the course and it should be ok.
She humiliates students for being interested by acting like a lost confused puppy when a question is brought up. Or maybe she really just doesnt understand student questions. either way a good teacher can get past their ego to take their true value in clarifying a poorly taught concept. Her ego is the biggest I have scene. Not a pleasant teacher
Overall, I enjoyed having Peggy as my professor for this course. Her cheesy, dry humour forces you to pay more attention to the lecture, as her jokes are quite hilarious but suttle. The course, however, was alot of work, so be prepared to mainly self-teach youself the material from the lecture notes and tutorials.
I really enjoyed having Peggy as my prof and her class was always a lot of fun. She never went over the actual material that we would be tested on, leaving all of the learning up to us, so if you can handle lots of self-learning Peggy teaching this class is great
Peggy is hilarious and a very good lecturer. This class is easy but study HARD for the midterms, as they are all short answer. It is very clear what you will be tested on, you just have to pay attention.
Be prepared to cram all the definitions and all the lists/diagrams from the book to get a good grade on the tests. Peggy never really goes through any of the material, which she is going to test you on so don't even bother going to class unless you have a midterm. If you go to class then she will praise people asking stupid and pointless questions.
Peggy is really enthusiastic with her class. I find her sarcastic jokes funny. Although attending classes doesn't help you that much, she randomly gives examination tips. It's mostly definitions and enumerations. It's easy to get an A+ on exams when you memorize all the business terms in the book and familiarize yourself with their definitions. A++
She's a great prof, I found her very easy to understand. She is easy to talk to and will make the effort to help if you ask.
Absolutely horrible teacher. She is such an unpleasant person and her attitude towards students is degrading. She does not give good tips or help with what to study for exams, nor does she properly answer serious questions-when she does, it is either with a sarcastic tone, or with rudeness.
The course is incredibly easy, all material for acing the tests can be found in your textbook and on quizlet. Peggy makes it very clear of what is important for tests and also what is expected for the group project. Buckle up if you get a bad group, it'll be a bumpy ride.
Glad I had Peggy for SGMA 217. Expectations are very clear and she made lecture very enjoyable. Tests are all memorization of lists and definitions. Also just hope you get a good group for the project too.
This lady is a joke. She expects you to write a quiz using an out of print textbook that isn't available at the book store or on line. Super not helpful. Her class is a joke and being canceled
Peggy is overly passive aggressive and rude to her students. She marks unfairly and does not give feedback until half the reviews have already been handed in. She incorporates criteria into her grading that is not specified in the outlines. She tells unfunny jokes and teaches out dated material.
The SGMA 217 class in and of itself is bad. Your grade will not be reflected by the effort you put in. Peggy's lectures are dry. She is well-intended and responds to emails within a day or two. Students are docked serious marks for spelling errors and passive voice, yet there are numerous errors in the instruction sheets. Pray for a good group!
Very good professor for a first year business student to have
She's really kind and easy to approach. Class covers the basics of business and has a group project that might make you hate group projects. Quizzes are straightforward and the midterm is easy given you have studied and read the textbook. Know your definitions, hope you get a good group, and you'll end up with a high mark. Grade scale is strict.
Overall the course was taught decently, however, the marking scheme was confusing. On some assignments that I thought I did bad I received a good grade, however, other assignments I did did not receive a good grade even though I thought I performed well.
Group project doesn't teach you much, only experience. Marking is harsh, written it's not graded at a first year standard. Everyone averages B- on it. Having a good group helps. Grading scale is high. Lots of reading, glossary is the most important. Overall good prof., not so helpful class in the long run since it's an into business class.
I liked Peggy initially as she has a dry sense of humour that can be quite funny. However, over the semester it became clear she's tired and bored with her work. She showed no true interest in the students, she just plowed through the material and left it at that. Wouldn't recommend her if you honestly want a good introduction to finance.
SGMA 217 itself is a terrible course. Haskayne is trying to force you to get good with group work, however they stick you with students who have no desire to work towards a good grade. Peggy is a great prof who makes class interesting! If it was not for her, I would of hated this class.
I thought Peggy was a pretty good prof, and is kind of funny. The quizzes and exams were really easy. The class was a free A.
Peggy is engaging and sometimes funny. Class is super easy!
Not Recommended at all. Not helpful, not caring. She doesn't even care if you ask a question. The grading is not clear too. She is just flipping slide without explaining them. There is some thing wrong with .......
I think Peggy is an amazing prof! She has a really dry sense of humor that really lightens up the lectures. The examples that she gives for specific course concepts really cleared up many things for me. The class itself is really easy, but there are a lot of participatory assignments and quizzes that you have to complete.
SGMA 217 is only interesting if you have a good group. Peggy as an instructor is really good and encourages discussions in class. Many people say that she is condescending but I found her funny and friendly. Get ready to read alot for the quizzes though. Would highly recommend her.
Didn't go into much detail explaining stuff we needed to know, just gave us the just then expected us to go do the reading on it. Helped us out when needed, but overall she put the responsibility for your learning on you.
the quizzes matter! get ready to read! Her lecture slides are not really helpful
Doesn't cover anything that will help you on the quizzes the lectures are basically useless. All you do are dumb exercises like building a imaginary product with lego, not really sure how that helps me on the quizzes, which are worth 25% and 30% btw so study hard.
Although I really hated SGMA, Peggy was delightful.
Peggy is a solid instructor. She's very easy going and keeps the class light and relaxed. The professors influence in this class is minimal though, your grade pretty much depends solely on your group project and the two quizzes. Put some time in and work hard and an A is doable in this class.
Peggy is a knowledgeable prof who has the humor to convey her knowledge effectively. She may seem brusque at first but her smarts and kindness will win you over. Lots of reading .
Peggy is great. She's funny and actually enjoys talking to the students. I think the course itself is really quite ridiculous. The marking scale for a first year business course just doesn't make sense and the group project is graded so ridiculously hard. If you're gonna take it with anyone, Peggy's probably a good choice.
Good prof, ridiculous class. Lectures with Peggy were engaging, but the course itself makes no sense. The grading scale doesn't reflect the work done throughout the semester. A one page paper that could be done in an hour was worth the same as a 10 page group report. Hopefully they change the course outline but i would recommend Peggy
Peggy is actually very nice and respectful to her students. If u get a bad group for the big project, the work load of the class will be heavier. just memorize the key terms/ definit'ns of the textbook as that is all u need to succeed on the 2 midterms. In class activites are useless & they know it but one time they gave ppl who showed up a 1%bonus
Peggy attempted to make the class interesting and applicable which I appreciated. Just with the nature of SGMA (the group projects and difficult midterms), you end up teaching yourself the entire course. I merely attended class for attendance and friends. TEXTBOOK NEEDED as you will be teaching all the content to yourself.
No complaints was a good professor didn't ask to much and marked fairly
She was a fine prof for SGMA217. Made pretty dull content bearable. The course isn't great, the majority of the work was on a group project that was worth the same (minus presentation) as a paper that I wrote in an hour and got an A on. Midterms cover a lot of content and are worth a lot.
Peggy is a great professor because she always made class engaging. The two midterms are worth 55% and they're only easy if you put in a solid 15 hours of reading the textbook for each of them. The group report was marked harshly and is the reason I didn't get an A. For the report, try to use Grammarly as it will mitigate the damage to your grade.
Although I really was not a fan of the course, she did make the class fun and she treated the students with respect. I have no complaints about Peggy. People are criticizing the firmness of grading with the term report, but she did not mark them. Without rambling any further, I would just like to say I would absolutely take another class with her
Wont take her class anymore
While Peggy was a fairly good prof the course SGMA 217 is set up in a pretty brutal fashion where if you have a bad "quiz" worth 30% or have a bad group you are going to struggle a lot but that is not quite the fault of her. The lecture does nothing to prepare for the exams so make sure you know the textbook as if you wrote it.
I liked Peggy, she made a class with pretty tough content doable. She gave some easy marks out to save the difficulty of the exams. Pretty funny and cared about students doing well but tough class overall.
I really liked Peggy. The material was presented in a fun and informative matter using lots of in-class activities that helped you comprehend the finance concepts. Also, gave students opportunities to keep their grade high. Would definitely take a finance class with Peggy again.
I had Peggy for SGMA 217 and she was such a gem! She really cares about her students and is willing to help you. Her lectures are very engaging, however, she doesnt really teach to the tests. My one complaint was the fact that we were forced to buy Norms textbook even though a new copy was not needed.
The course itself is pretty harsh if you get put in a bad group and lectures don't prepare you for tests, but Peggy herself was a great prof. She managed to keep lectures entertaining and gave out Kinder eggs during group exercises. This was her last year teaching SGMA 217, so I'm happy I took the course this year.
I like Peggy as a Prof, but this class is a mess! I honestly don't feel like I learned anything in class, that I didn't read in the textbook (which you should read before class). There was hardly any instructions for the group project so we were always left guessing. The course outline is awful, and I found the tests a little weird.
Gotta read the textbook before class. Every class is a discussion based on what you've read, so if you forget to read the textbook then you're being carried by your group. This is her last time teaching SGMA217 so she won't be teaching this course anymore. Her sense of humor is a bit dry but funny at times though.
Often I attend class and rely on the textbook for examples and readings when I don't understand concepts. This class was hard to adjust to as there is no text and minimal slides. However, if you accept Peggy's teaching style, attend every class, and participate you will do good. The cases are not a lot of work and you can get good grades on them.
Peggy was condescending when replying to students questions, both through email and in front of a classroom. During one lecture she made a racist remark towards a student speaking a foreign language while their mic was accidently unmuted, and I cannot support a prof like this.
The class material is easy but while Peggy is a decent teacher, she can be super condescending as well. She's also unclear when answering student questions. She's the type of prof who would respond to an obvious "A or B" question with a "yes" but maybe that's just what classic SGMA profs are taught to do. Quizzes are tricky but the cases are easy.
SGMA 217 has been the worst class of my haskayne experience. Its unfortunate that peggy teaches this course because she is a nice prof, but this is the most unorganized course ever. The profs grade so rough and do not provide constructive criticism, they are just straight up rude. This course is self-directed, if you have a bad group youll fail.
From my experience, Peggy is kind and likes to make jokes in class which lightens up the mode. It sucks that shes teaching SGMA because this class is so unorganized. I would not recommend this class to anyone. If your group is bad, get ready to put in extra work, or the worst case scenario, fail. The midterms are based off of mindtap so purchase it
Teaches a 3 hour lecture that is not worth going to unless theres a graded assignment. Not entirely her fault as this class is as bad as it gets but I really didnt take anything positive or constructive from her teaching.
Peggy is a good prof and is friendly/approachable. People often worry about the group project, but it's not as crucial as it's made out to be. Focus on doing well on the tests, and you should be fine. Lectures are word for word from the textbook, so they aren't critical if you read over the textbook and take notes.
She isn't that bad as a professor, it is the course itself that makes it very hard. Don't stress too hard about group projects, just make sure you are reading the book in detail. My personal advice is to buy MindTap to do Adaptive Test Preps, because they are super helpful at midterms.
By far the worst prof I've ever had in my whole undergrad. Save yourself the misery and take someone who has a better teaching style.
Peggy is a very nice professor and I think this class is one of the more beneficial Finance classes as you are actually taught how to do modeling. The issue is that there are individual cases each week and they aren't easy (although she's a fair grader) and her quizzes weren't easy either. Only take this if you're willing to put in the hours.
This is the second class that I've taken with Peggy, and I have to say that my feedback is pretty similar to the review I wrote after SGMA 217. She's a really good professor because she's able to engage the class throughout lectures, but the course material is quite theoretical and group work (in the form of weekly cases) can be quite challenging.
Peggy's slide decks are unprofessional and made with apparently very little effort. There is very little clarity on her expectations for assignments. Truly a class which I walked away from with virtually zero practical knowledge. The material has the potential to be engaging and useful, but the delivery and effort from Peggy was disappointing.
Peggy might have a bad rep, but she is amazing at making the class intellectually stimulating as a teacher. I built an even better understanding of Corporate Finance & Capital Budgeting on a high level and got to understand how the concepts tied together with basic modelling and cases. Highly recommended for Finance majors.
Thoroughly enjoyed my semester with Peggy. The course was very engaging and was a good recap of Corporate Finance and an introduction to specific project-based Capital Budgeting. Very accessible throughout in-class activities, after-class, & assisted with general questions on industry, and non-class related finance subjects. Highly recommend!!
There was not an option for MDGE 604, however she sucks. Does not teach anything in class, skips through slides and when you ask her a question she gets upset. I have a take home midterm due and the questions she did in class is much easier than the questions she is asking. This prof need to retire ASAP
Peggy is a great person and teacher! Very informative and funny. However, the grading and weight of the group project was ridiculous. Was it graded "fairly?" In my opinion yes, but the expectations of what we were supposed to do seemed far lesser than the final mark. The continual presentations were also tedious.
Unpopular opinion but Peggy was one of my favourite profs this term. She is so funny and you can tell she has a lot of experience within Finance and is really passionate. Although the cases and in-class activities are quite a lot of work, she grades very fairly, and this is one of the easier Finance classes. Quizzes 2 and 3 were quite tough also.
Peggy's class can be a lot of work, but her engaging lectures and fair grading make it worthwhile. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep - highly recommend.
She is actually hilarious, makes sure everything is very clear in class. This class is basically just excel with no final so it's super light work load, just some cases that you have to look at.
