her class is boring and hard.
She's so...steely. Cold. Too much information in too little time to really absorb it all. Plus, she doesn't even look at the test until the day of! I'd pick someone else, really...
its borrrrrrrring.... test are too hard... thinks non-majors are majors... :/ 2 hrs of study per hr in class, remember that.... shell say it lots...
Let me make a distinction; THE CLASS IS HARD, regardless of how good your teacher is. Mason is clear about what is expected, and on review day will tell you questions to expect on tests. Reviews and Test Worksheets can be found on ecampus. Her demonstrations are easy to understand, and she is great about clearly answering questions. I got a high A.
she is so nice and helpfull. i am now a biology major because of her.
This is a great instructor who knows how to teach and the material. It is only hard if you are lazy. It does take work, but she will give you the help you need. I liked her work ethic and her. This class was worth the work.
it's not an easy A but definitely not an impossibility if you do your part. she doesn't require stuff without providing clear instructions. helps with ppt notes. loved the class! she has an intelligent sense of humor and doesn't try too hard at all like other professors with the same credentials.
This teacher was great!!!. She's very helpful and understanding. I love the class though a lot of people says she's boring...of course u will be bored if u r not paying attention and not ineterested with the class but for me it's quite an experience and i learned a lot from this class. I made an A+ in this class coz i did my part as a student!!!!!
great teacher! class was very interesting. but students have to do their part in order to get an A. totally changed my outlook on microbiology!
Bio is a hard class, even for non majors. Mason has powerpoints, test reviews, lab practical reviews, and extra credit!! She knows the class is hard and knows that students have lives outside of school. She is VERY helpful and would recommend her to everyone!!
She is no longer teaching biology but if your looking for a A& P class, I difently recommend taking mason, she an awsome teacher that helps students out when they need it. I think she deserves a raise.
Very hard to pass her class. She lectures non stop and expects you to know everything. She's interesting, but expects too much to be covered in summer class. If you don't understand what you read, get a tutor to help you understand.
took her for 8 week maymester, got an A, i was intimedated at first but once class started it was easy, of course with effort! she gave us test reviews &went over it in class. i would DIFINATELY reccomend if u can take her class DO IT!!! shes really not boring and can be funny at times.
This class was a serious butt-kicking! She made it easy to get at least a B but the volume of work was large. If you love sitting in front of your computer typing papers and doing assignments, with the daily lab quizzes included plus having ESSAY lecture tests and lab practical exams back to back on following days, this is for you.
She is intimidating at first but she is alright after a little bit and funny. She demands a lot but ends up grading pretty lenient. If you actually study you will do great. I loved the class even though I usually perfer blow of classes
I had her Micro class in Spring '08 Like the others stated, I was too intimidated at first very from the first class. I wasn't even clear what 'microbiology' was when I first entered the class I have to say though as the classes progressed I began to become very interested She was very clear in teaching and helpful, her and Terri both were great!
Ms. Mason is too cool. The class is a lot of work (short essays, tests, labs), but you learn a ton. Surprisingly, classes and labs are pretty fun. Her dry sense of humor and her geekiness make her easily approachable. She's a good lecturer and makes plenty of materials available for studying. You can easily get an A if you study and do the labs.
I took micro with her and it was great! I think I want to be a microbiologist now. She is a fair and nice person and I learned a lot from her.
Wonderful professor!!! Dr.Mason always has your grades posted, so you know how you're doing. She gives extra credit, and goes over her test with the class to answer any questions so pay close attention. Mason does her part as a teacher, but IT'S UP TO YOU TO STUDY! She's also really nice, and approachable.
Dr.Mason is great!!! she always has grades posted, so you know how you're doing. She gives extra credit, and reviews completed test in class to answer any questions pay close attention you may see some of them again. Hurry and TAKE THIS PROFESSOR her class fills fast. (See the 19 comments for Mason under the Biology tab fyi).
Professor Mason is acutally a great teacher, she just tends to move a little fast at times. The best way to pass this class is keeping up with your reading and already having an idea of concepts that are uncertain to you. She offers extra credit to cushion your grades so that helps. I highly recommend this teacher.
she has plenty of office hours for help, a TA for tutoring, power points for preparing your own study packet, in short she does everything to help you succeed, and you can tell she loves science, A+ for this instructor!
I thought Dr. Mason did a fine job lecturing, but you must come to the lectures prepared having read the chapter beforehand. Anyone expecting to learn enough to pass the class from just sitting in on the lectures is sadly mistaken. She does an excellent job clarifying concepts and explaining them in a way that is easy to learn.
Cannot say enough good things about this woman. She actually helps you learn and wants you to understand.
Dr. Mason truly does give you all the tools you need to succeed. A&P is an extremely difficult class by nature, Dr. Mason recognizes this and does everything she can to help you. If you do not succeed in her class it is because you did not put the time in that is necessary for this class. Offers plenty of extra credit.
MICROBIOLOGY- mason can be intimidation at first.. but she is really cool and helpful.. study the review do ur work .. and u will make a A. there is alot of extra credit too
Took this class in the summer. Her tests are difficult, but she gives you the essay question ahead of time so you can prepare. There are lots of quizzes and assignments to balance out points. She says she doesn't give extra credit, but she ended up doing it anyway by the end of the semester. She's a great teacher but you have to study VERY hard.
Just make sure to hold on to powerpoint and you will pass the clas.
The best teacher I have ever had! Her lectures are very interesting, she explains the material very well and she is very organized. BIOL 1407 is a hard class, Dr. Mason does her part largely, the rest is up to you.
Great teacher, but her lectures are really dull, boring, and empty. I didnt learn anything from lectures instead I went the whole semester rereading her pp and reading the text book. Other than her boring lecture, test where a little difficult but the rest is a very easy. Still, could've been better.
Awsome profesor! Study and you'll do great. I suggest you attend all the classes and take notes. Really interesting class.
Dr.Mason has boring lectures, but her tests are alright. I would have enjoyed her class more if there was a point to attending lecture.
LOVED Dr. Mason! To date THE best professor I have ever had! I highly recommend her, but just be ready to push yourself and do the work. No free passes in this class...its all you! ;)
She is AWESOME. One of the best professors I have ever had. She is very easy to approach always willing to answer questions. Her classes are hard no doubt but she does her best to make everything clear for you. I had her for microbiology as well. That was her specialty shes very interesting in my opinion! also very sweet person! HIGHLY recommend!!
NOT AN EASY A! A&P is naturally extremely difficult. However, Dr Mason is very easy to approach always willing to answer questions. She does her best to make everything clear. Her lectures are very interesting, she explains the material very well and she is very organized. Gives plenty of extra credit.
I think she is a great teacher. Her class is definitely not easy, you really have to put the time and effort in.She's not going to baby you,but she genuinely wants you to underdstand the material and do well in the class so she will give you all the resources you need. She makes really great analogies that helped me understand stuff that I never have.
Fantastic prof. I will take her for other classes. She gives you all the resources you need to do well. Its your job to study and work hard. If you do that, you will succeed. She genuinely loves teaching and you can tell.
I liked that she tried very hard to make this class a nice learning enviroment. It is a way hard class and her test are no joke, but she does like to see her students succeed. She doesnt teach 1408 but she does micro. Also her lectures sometimes are very fast paced. copy the powerpoints and bring them to class!
One of the best professors I have had so far. She is fair and willing to work with you and wants to see you succede. She is a great professor and her lab assistant is awesome as well. Highly recommended
Very helpful. Fair. Remeber to be on point with assignments and quizzes. Recommended.
Great professor! Dr. Mason holds you accountable for your own success, and guides you to find your style of retaining the material. She is clear and concise. I would recommend Dr. Mason
Dr Mason seems intimidating at first, but stick with the class. There are so many opportunities for extra credit to boost your grade. If you study the review and practice the essay questions the tests are not too hard (mix of multiple choice, short answer and one essay). Make sure to take the 5 question, open book daily lab quizzes - easy points!
intimidating, hard, but seems to be fair. still in the class, might need to take it over in the fall. Will take her again (if need be) depending on grade. It is extremely fast and furious in the summer. Best advice, do not take any other classes with Micro! It's killin' me:( A ton of busy work, not sure what the purpose is???
if you stick to the schedule and take quizzes on time and also study reviews that are given you will do fine. took this class over the summer and will most likely get an A! it wasnt an easy A for sure..definitely needed some hardcore studying for this class but its possible to do well in her class. alot of extra credit given to make up for poor gra
Overall a good teacher. READ BEFORE YOU GO TO CLASS. She will blow past things that you will need to know and you'll be left scratching your head. She's a very kind professor, but don't take her classes in the summer semesters... Other than that, I highly recommend her.
Not recommended in summer at all becoz it can get very overwhelming. Dr mason may be seem to be intimidating but she is a helpful instructor but the subject is very hard. She does give extra credit to make it easy. Study and study HARD and you will make an "A". I and several others made an "A". Assignments are more important than tests.
A Great Educator, born to teach! She loves her field. She provides suttle insight into the art of being a student. What it means to learn & Understand. You have to work, so be prepared for"assignments". But when you finish you will have learned something. Time for learning is required for her class.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. She is tough. But you will learn. It's a lot of work. She wants you out of your comfort zone. Would not take a heavy load w/this class. Two papers on top of 2 quizes per week and lecture and lab tests. But she cares and is very approachable. She'll help you and her door is open.
Dr. Mason is one heck of a teacher! She is awesome! The class is hard and you will have lots to do but you will learn soooooooo much! As long as you do the work that is required and study, you will do fine in her class!
Microbiology class was very was very detailed and intense in the beginning. The instructor is very clear on her expectations. Lots of lab quizzes. A total of 22 for each lab exercise. The teacher is very helpfull and will help you learn. Lots of extra credit towards the end of semester. Would highly recommend.
This class is tough, and time consuming just like any other Bio class. Includes, quizzes, hw, and extra credit! Test are tough, and include an essay portion which is easy!! She does go over what will be on test though. Lab is awesome, a lot of work as welll! but worth it.
Wouldn't take any other instructor but Dr. Mason for Microbiology lecture. She is tough but if you study you got this.
Dr. Mason is an excellent teacher that knows her subject and cares both about teaching and about her students. Although the class is test-heavy, I learned a lot and enjoyed most of it.
if you just want to get an A without hardwork, dont take her. She is one of the best professor i ever had. she should become a role model for others!, two thumbs up prof.Mason!
This class is hard, but so fun! I LOVED Dr. Mason. She is very helpful & wants you to succeed! I miss her class :( Take her! Be prepared to study, but just take her!
Dr. Mason is awesome. the class itself is very hard. but i tok lecture online and lab on campus. She makes the lab very interesting, i enjoyd every bit of the lab, except when it came to doint the unknown project. Other than that I micro is easier and muc moritesting than A&Ps
Dr. Mason is an awesome teacher. She is very passionate about the subject. If you can keep focus you'll learn a lot. For hard chapters she will break things down so that you understand. She gives reviews for all tests, so do them! I promise it will be on the test. Essay questions are given in advance. Study, don't procascinate and you'll do great!
Do not take lecture online. No help. Lecture exams are hard. Reviews don't help. Lab is great, but take lecture in a classroom.
One of the best professor i ever had. she should become a role model for others!
Lab is fun but there is a quiz everytime you come in. Lab practical was fair. There's a big lab report due too. online lecture exams were difficult. She does not give you a review. So you have to study everything. I studied MasteringBiology hw for the exams. she curves based on how well everyone else does. i would advise to take lecture than online
Dr. Mason is very intelligent, helpful and wants you to learn/pass. Micro is a hard subject to begin with, and is not a "cake" class. If you don't test well, take her lecture class. If you don't understand something ask for clarification or go to her office hours. Don't be a dummy and take a class like A&P with this class you will never get sleep.
This professor ROCKS!! Buy the last edition for the book. Same material. I took the online class and as long as you actually pay attention during the homework, you'll do fine on the tests. She is beyond fair and breaks everything down. Plus she's just a genuinely great person. Don't skip- it will put you way behind on the unknown project.
This is a great professor who truly wants you to do well. You can not skip lecture, you must read the text and you will pass. She has available hours to meet with her and ask questions. I really enjoyed this class!
she is Amazing , you will never forget the joy of learning .
I cannot rate her highly enough - excellent. She says that her goal is to make us instructor-proof, so her lectures are necessary but not sufficient or as helpful as they might be. She is INCREDIBLY helpful, though: passionate, skilled, and the lab is great fun while intense. I give her a 10+ overall. If you want to learn micro TAKE HER CLASS!
She loves what she teaches and it shows. Read the text before the lecture so you can ask questions because she just clarifies text. She does not aim to teach you the whole chapter. She uses lecture to go over things that might be difficult to understand. She will work with you, and help you, but she is still strict. Labs were very fun.
Prof Mason loves to teach, and it shines through her work. She is meticulous and detailed when giving lab instructions - be sure to listen! She's the type to wander around and check on everyone as they work - not hovering, but more for encouragement. Answers e-mails quickly. End of semester extra credits. DO read the text, take notes, and study!
Dr. Mason is a great professor. I fully expected to hate taking Microbiology 12 hours a week for 8 weeks, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Don't get me wrong, this class is difficult and requires a LOT of time, but if you pay attention in class, study, and keep up with your work, there is no reason you shouldn't succeed.
Tough class, and you have to work hard, but if you have to take this class, this is the professor you want. She knows her stuff, and if you are willing to do your part, she is more than willing to answer questions and gives great feedback and great advice on how and what to study. She prepares you well by laying a foundation for future study.
One of the best professors I have taken at Brookhaven. Took her for summer Microbiology and was a little worried with the amount of work. However, if you listen and follow her instructions there is no reason you shouldn't be able to complete this class and have a great time. Would highly recommend.
Professor Mason is awesome and I highly recommend her. She knows what she is talking about and you can tell she enjoys Microbiology (which is a breath of fresh air when learning a difficult subject). If you want an A and you work for it there shouldn't be any reason you don't get it.
Her expectations are clear. This is a majors class so you are expected to be there and do the work. She gives extra credit also gives great stories . This was a hybrid course so the lecture was online which was good. Tip: Do not be late because she takes points off your quiz. Try not to miss lab because it's an important part of the grade.
Professor Mason is an amazing. At first, taking microbiology in 8 weeks felt stressful, but professor Mason explains everything so clear that there is no room for stress. This is still a difficult course and lots of work required, but if you show up and pay attention, you should be fine.
Dr. Mason provides all the resources and guidance necessary to achieve a high grade. She cares about the success of her students and often gives tips and tricks for remembering the important topics. She loves biology and makes the topics accessible and enjoyable. I took her for BIO 1406 and purposely chose her as my Micro prof! Sad its over!
I absolutely LOVE Professor Mason! She is the best professor I ever had! She is super caring and makes sure you understand the materials that are provided. I am so glad I am taking her for Micro! She will help you out if you just ask her for help. She even shows up for lab sometimes and helps out in our labs. I recommend her class HIGHLY!
She will make you work but she literally gives you everything you need to succeed. She can come off intimidating but she really cares about your success if you make your effort clear. I expected to make a B and I made an A. Her lecture exams are just like the hw and practicals are just like the reviews. I'm really glad I had her!
I really liked Professor Mason, she can seem a bit terse sometimes, but she just wants you to succeed. She really knows her topic and will related things to things you understand, it makes sense. She does a great job of review sheets for the test, but you have to put in the time and effort. I would definitely take her again.
Prof Mason was AMAZING. I wish she taught more and Id take her again. I took the 8 week summer course and its totally doable. This class is a lot of work but Mason provides you with everything you need to get an A if you work hard. Absolutely loved this class even though its a lot of work. I learned a ton!
I definitely recommend taking Dr. Mason. She makes it clear that she will go off of the syllabus since day 1. She goes based on a point system, not percentages! She gives unit test reviews of topics to study and know, DO THEM!!! Gives extra credit so that gives you a little cushion. An A isn't impossible, good luck!
She goes off the syllabus and is an overall great teacher. I never went to lecture, nor read the textbook. I only looked at chapter outlines she posts and test review and still got an A in the class! Theres mastering biology but you just need a 70% to get a 100% and a virus project but she grades very easy on it. You still have to study for an A!
4 exams and 1 final, 3 lab practicals, online hw, pre-lab quizzes, 1 lab project that requires time outside of class and a 20+ page report, 1 disease project with an optional presentation for extra credit, & you have to memorize 50 diseases for the final. This class is far too loaded with material which makes it difficult to make an A.
Prof. Mason will not just give you the grade you will have to earn it. Making an A definitely is possible if you put enough effort. She provides the tools you need to excel in this course. Ask questions if you don't understand and she will explain. I honestly loved this class I learned!
Professor Mason was amazing! I would recommend taking her class. Although it's a very tough class, I learned a lot from it. 4 Exams, 3 Lab practicals, 1 Final exam learning 50 diseases, 20+page lab report, lots of extra credits. Just make sure to stay on top of things and you'll get through it.
She's so caring, a very good teacher spends time to ensure you understand the class. Carries everyone along. I wish she is teaching all the courses I have to do.
Difficult and not easy class-took 8 wks summer-big mistake. All time is devoted to this class. 22 timed quizzes-not found online, 4 lecture tests, 3 lab exams, 1 compreh exam, 2 big papers-no curve. class avg & mean68%.
Prof. Mason is by far the best microbiology professor offered at dcccd. She works with you, gives plenty of extra credit, disease research project is an easy A - took me 30min to complete, unknown paper is easier than she makes it sound - I got an A on the paper. Go to lecture (atten. not required), dont miss lab.
loved her way of teaching. She is so helpful and she helps you understand especially in the lab.
Amazing teacher. She has good lectures with a lot of fun trivia about the learning material. Good and patient teacher in lab. She wants you to make mistakes to learn from them. You're working for your A, do NOT take the quizes and extra credit for granted. Book was barely used; you won't really needPlease take this teacher if you need Microbiology.
There is nothing not to love about Professor Peggy Mason. She is an amazing professor who cares about you and explains you things until you understand them. It is NOT an easy course. You have to work hard for this class and to get an A you have to go an extra mile but if you have a routine then you will be good.
WOW!I love Professor Mason, she will do anything to help her students achieve greatness as long as you are putting in the effort! Unfortunately, my time (in person) with her was cut short due to COVID-19, but that didn't stop her capability to teach beautifully online. Get the textbook and review notes; she doesn't trick you! EFFORT A!!!
Professor Mason is an outstanding instructor with excellent teaching capabilities. Like all science courses, the final grade depends on how much effort you put into the curriculum. Microbiology isn't a stroll through the park, but this professor makes learning fun and enjoyable. Lastly, work hard because your grade isn't served on a silver platter.
Professor Mason was amazing. I looked forward to going to microbio labs with her. She has a clear passion for the subject and cares about her students. Microbio is one of my favorite subjects because of her!
Dont consider taking anyone else for micro! Prof. Mason is both among the most challenging and best professors Ive ever had shes amazing. She has a real talent for breaking down complex material into simple terms. Watch ALL of her eCampus videos & go to office hours, and youll do great! Tests are off PPTs-- text only needed for context.
You have quizzes every Wednesday for lab and theyre 5 questions 5 min. Wont allow you to retake if you get a poor grade. Lab and lecture test are at a specific time and time with lockdown browser. Test are not open book She doesnt lecture you need to learn the material and ask her for help. Shes probably a great teacher in person but not online
Dont take this professor if you want an A. I know microbiology is hard but she makes it 10x harder. LOTS OF homework, 4 lecture 50 questions, 4 lab 30 questions. One disease project and real unknown project. 21 quizzes 5 questions for 5 mins. She responds fast on emails but doesnt help you to do better. Really hard class to make an A. Worst class
Honestly, course was tough. I thought'd be more optimized for online, but that wasn't the case. There were like 4 seperate projects all due within a span of 2 months in between tests, HW, quizzes, lecture, & lab. I think Dr. Mason was awesome, really great at explaining a lot! I wish she posted more vids over lecture than lab. Very communicative.
If you want take Microbiology online look for another teacher in order to pass. she keeps posing many things that make confusion and lot of work. she is awful please don't take her
Take this class in person in a regular semester, & it's amazing. It's TONS of work, but Prof. Mason is BRILLIANT & teaches better than any professor I had during my bachelor's. People disagreeing took her online/in a short semester, aren't cut out for the work required of PA, nursing, etc. programs, and/or are incapable of staying organized.
loved professor mason! she will give you all the tools you need to succeed while also pushing you to be the best student you can possibly be! took her in summer 8 week course and i would highly recommend taking her for micro! terry is awesome too!
Professor Mason is the kind of professor you're lucky to get, she will push you to a level you didn't know you were capable of achiving. Professor Mason will not only teach you Microbiology she will teach you studying skills. She will not affirm you on your answers rather she will lay clues that will allow you to arrive to the right conclusion.
You learn on your own, in class is more of a review, lots of homework quizzes and two lab projects one lecture project. Exams are very tough. You just have to dedicate A LOT of time to this one class.. one of the hardest classes but good teacher (to review things)
