She's an okay teacher

Good teacher, she's one of the better for the MAC1105 classes
Very Easy teacher. If you have problems she does not mind stopping a class of 200 to answer your specific. Take this if you need college alg. And when you take this do the online practice quizzes and tests. They are the test just different numbers.
Discrete Math with Kirby was great. And this was with distance learning. It's probably better in person. She is a nice and caring instructor and she knows her stuff. There was a lot of effort put out on her behalf.
I really liked her as a teacher. Knows how to explain well
She's nice and is very clear, doesn't try to trick students with the math, if you have a choice get in her class!!!

Discrete is a hard subject, but her methods help you understand the material. We had online lecture notes, discussion boards (shared with distance students), and quizzes. Her lecture was helpful and the assignments could be submitted online at midnight instead of class time.
Simply an excellent instructor. If you can take anyone for Discrete Mathmatics, which is a troublesome course for many, this would be the professor you would want to have. She is willing to repeat herself as much as necessary and is always open to help via e-mail or in person.
From what I understand, she teaches the online course well. This is not the case for the in-class course. She is very glad to answer questions, but she just is not clear. She expects students to learn the material before she even covers it and gives quizzes the same day she goes over new material!
Dr. Kirby was like the best math teacher I have ever had. The day she brought in the apples to explain addition I was like wow I finally get it. 2 apples + 3 apples = 5 apples. thanx Dr. Kirby my parents were like thrilled with the B I got in your class.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. There was no challenge whatsoever. Unlike many college students I like a challenge, not to be treated like a 2 year old. The numerous morons in the class also didn't help. Not only could many of them not add but it is my belief that they also had not mastered reading. Worse prof and class ever.
Horrid teacher. Expects you to teach the material to yourself and then gives you all or nothing homework assignments (all or nothing as in if you get it wrong, you get a 0). Multiple times in class she would spend over 30 minutes on one long problem (proof) only to realize she copied it wrong and it didn't work out. Idoit.
Like awesome doesn't even begin to explain how great of a teacher she is. Like this one day I forgot how to spell proof and when I asked how to she took time out of the class to slowly spell it for me p-r-o-o-f. Gosh she was great.
Her lectures are directed more toward the slower students in the class, so if you're not a math person you should try to take her classes. But even if you're good at math, you can appreciate her for her clarity. Also, the material on her tests is easy but she deducts 5% for little true or false questions.
She teaches calc very well. Tests were somewhat hard. ThompsonNow Homework sucks ass! That**** ruined my grade. Other than that she's good, go to class too.
I loved this teacher. She teaches the material very well and goes through every detail very clearly. I barely made an A though because of the ThompsonNow homework. It is so time consuming and hard. A lot harder than the tests. I thought the tests were VERY easy. Overall she makes calculus easy if you listen to her lectures.
Textbook not needed at all. If you need her to she will definitely go into idiot terms and help. She could explain calculus to a class of cracked out hobos. I got a fairly easy A in her class. Lots of homework but you can just guess and get credit most of the time. Homeworks are harder than the semi-easy tests. You need to study but not too much.
This teacher sucks. Sure the class is easy but once you get to Calculus you find out that what you were taught in Precalc. amounts to nothing. I found myself memorizing the types of answers I would see on the exams since the questions are on einstein. I learned nothing in this class. I would suggest going to another school altogether.
Easy class but you learn absolutely nothing. When I got to Calculus II my instructor told me I got screwed in my Calc. I class b/c my instructor taught me nothing other than how to memorize the types of answers for certain questions. She is the reason I am failing my Calc. II class. SHE STINKS! avoid at all costs.
She is totally slow and BORING! Don't get her unless you have a spare pillow to bring to class. I was out like that whenever she started teaching. AVOID.
Absolutely can't stand class and instructor. Completely unhelpful and can't explain anything clearly. Extremely boring class. Avoid like the plague.
Can't teach anything so that it's understandable. I thought I was good at math but am failing her class. Avoid her and go with a graduate student. I wish I had.
Worst prof ever. I along with about 20 other students in her class plan to make a visit to the Dean's office to complain. I can't believe FSU has given her the title professor. Did they even screen her before hiring?
This class is awful. I tried to go for help at her office but she was still unclear and unhelpful. Avoid and go with someone else.
she made many mistakes while teaching math
Fell asleep a few times in her class. Very boring, but just be sure to take notes and study for the test and you should do fine.
She made one test 39 points of tricky true/false! She gives mad hard hw and she is a hard grader. Online quizzes that are tedious and only worth three points. Random in class quizzes.
Great Class!!
She made calc II clear and was always willing to give extra help.
Really greast at explaining math. The best math teacher I've had in college.
Overall Kirby is a good teacher. She knows the material very well & teaches it in an understandable way. I HATED going to mandatory recitation b/c we did group assignments and I didn't need help. The quizzes due online every mon wed fri killed my grade b/c i forgot some but tests are much easier than the quizzes. 100 & 99 were my 1st 2 test grades.
Dr. Kirby explains the material well and will answer any questions that you may have. Tests are pretty fair.
From this class you will learn the barest elements of discrete math. The teacher regards with suspicion anything that does not resemble a familiar formulaic proof. Zero ingenuity. However! If you need a simple nuts and bolts discrete teacher, well she's it.
I have none dont so much work and learned so little. The online quizzes were ridiculous seeing as there were 3 or 4 a week and a recitation quiz. Also she is one of those professors thats likes to give you a quiz and then teach the material that was on the quiz after you already failed the quiz. overall I giver her a C-
hard grader and pretty demanding. However her class is pretty much based on routine. 3 online quizes a week, plus one every week in recitation (Recitation is mandatory, I never missed one), and occassional lecture quizes. There are practice quizes, tests and basically samples of everything on blackboard. You will do well if you're not lazy!
really good at making calc clear!
Hard class, and she doesn't make it any easier. Tests are cumulative. Gives a review before tests, but it contains so much that may be on the test it's practically useless. Expensive book, only used for homework problems. Otherwise she generally strays from the book. Much focus is put on obscure proofs.
Useless. She is frequently incorrect and teaches as if to an audience of 5 year-olds. Go to class anyway, though, and make sure you do the quizzes. Attempt to be as logical as possible and you can't go wrong.
Somewhat difficult class, but manageable. Do the extra credit; you'll regret it if you don't. She is approachable, so go to office hours or even make an appt and she will be willing to help. Do the study guides and the tests will be okay. It would be helpful to memorize the proofs as well, for the sake of your grade.
Dr. Kirby is a very sweet lady, and I highly recommend you take this calculus class if you have the option. She has an excellent TA who always took the time to help kids after class when they wanted, and she is available herself in office hours. IF you try, you will get a good grade. I was pretty lazy and got a C, but I say take this class.
She seems like she is always depressed. I tried everything to try to pass this class, but I eventually ended up withdrawing because of her exams. Partial credit isn't worth anything on her quizzes or exams. It felt like I either got it wrong or right...she didn't really look at the procedures I was following. Please don't waste your money.
Tests are very difficult with little partial credit given. 3 online quizzes per week and one quiz in recitation per week (in addition to online homework). Acts like everyone in the class is a math major. If you can avoid it, don't take her class...she could really care less what grades her students get in her class.
She has 3 online quizzes due each week and a mandatory quiz every week. Quiz grade killed my grade because she likes to assign quizzes and teach the material after it is due or not at all. Over all I did pretty well on tests but each question was woth 8-10 points so missing one would kill you. Also very little partial credit.
Difficult Teacher and challenging material. She's very nice but her grading is fierce.
her test are pretty hard but she curves them alot, easy final for the most part, follow what she has on her lesson plans because thats the material on the test, overall shes a pretty good teacher you just need to work hard if u want a good grade, makes the exams cummulative at times
Very good teacher. Do the online homework and do the book problems, and it is very easy to get an A. She curves her tests a ton!
I'm an engineering major. I took her for discrete math. I got an F. Do not take discrete math with Penelope Kirby. Actually don't take her. She is really nice but she covers too much material.
I did all my quizzes, got good grades in them all. Scored a B on two tests and an A on another (there's 4 total). And I still got a D+. What aggravated me the most is that she wouldn't give you partial credit on difficult questions, that is, if you did most procedures right AND STILL GET THE RIGHT ANSWER she will point out something wrong, and F!
sometimes the online quizes ask questions she never taught us, which really isnt fair. The tests get harder and harder so i suggest to put in the time to study. failing one test will cost you your grade. i got an A in AP Calc in highschool and a C in this class.
Fantastic Teacher
She is an excellent professor. I would, however, recommend that you only take her if you've had a previous calculus class or some understanding of calc I since she does go pretty fast and you could get lost. I've heard that she's very helpful during her office hours so if you don't understand something go to her not the recitation instructor.
Took Ap calc in high school and had no trouble with this class. Test questions are easier than the homework so if you can do the homework you should not have trouble with the tests.
She is a great teacher. Very helpful in class and will explain things to you if you ask a question in class. Tests are way easier than the online quizes, which are already pretty easy. I didn't need to go to office hours. Recitation is boring if you understand everything so I helped others. It sucks that you lose points for skipping it.
I took AP Calc in high school but I got an A in Dr. Kirbys class with a lot of studying. Her homework is hard but her tests are fair and usually come from her in class notes and additionally practice problems. Compared to how hard this class could be, I did not think it was that bad. I'd take her again.
The biggest issue I had with her was that she skipped so many examples from her print out notes that I hardly learned anything at all. Sometimes, she would literally go over only three examples in one section and then go right on to the next. Her lectures barely prepared you for the extensive homeworks on WebAssign.
she is a good teacher, sometimes goes very fast and skips examples, you have to practice a lot by yourself to do good in this class, her grading is awful, not always fair.
Her examples are very basic and she only goes over one type of example per problem. She does a section and a half of notes per lecture. Go to class because she gives lecture quizzes randomly. There are quizzes every recitation, so if you don't understand the material you don't have much time to learn it. She's a very hard grader, tests are hard.
Dr.Kirby is clear in lecture, however, the problems on the tests are usually a lot harder than the ones gone over in class. There are hardly any extra credit opportunities, but there are at least 3 weekly online hw quizzes that can help your grade. All in all, Calculus is hard in general but Dr. Kirby does a pretty good job at it. Would recommend.
Professor Kirby is an excellent teacher! She is very clear and explains herself very well. Sure calculus requires a lot of studying (well for me it did) but Dr. Kirby was a fantastic teacher and I'm taking her again for Calc 2. Just stay on top of the assignments, do the practice problems, and don't hesitate to ask questions
Dr. Kirby is a great teacher who is very helpful with explanations and answering questions. I'm a finance major and my test average is almost a 100, as long as you do the homework which is a lot harder than the test then you'll be fine. This is the best teacher by far, the only annoying thing is all the busy work with homework and quizzes.
Dr. Kirby is actually a really good professor, explains concepts clearly. Online quizzes and pop attendance quizzes really help with grades. Test were decent. Helpful in office hours. Would take a class with her again.
Kirby is one of the clearest calc professors. She teaches from the textbook and gives you time to take notes. everything about her is organized and calm. She definitely won't let you slip if you go into her office hours and request help. Her exams are super easy and do-able. Only thing is that the HW is time-consuming but isn't worth much.
Difficult class unless math comes easy to you. She is willing to help out if you just ask, which is really nice. You might not get an A unless this class was a high priority, though.
Great teacher for Calculus. Very clear, if you go to class and do homework and optional drill problems you will receive an A. If you complete it all, it is about 8 hours a week outside of class. She does around 2-3 random attendances. Would recommend you take her.
Get ready to work. Doesn't matter what you think you know, if you've never taken a calculus class before you will fail. Topics covered in depth and extremely fast and are impossible to keep up with. She gives a sample of every question so study it all or fail.
I took BC Calculus (Calc 1 & 2) in high school and still had a very tough time adjusting to her style of grading and teaching. Although I finished with an A, I failed the first half of the quizzes and received C's on the first 3 out of 4 tests. Her style of teaching is awful, and I would highly not recommend her if you don't have a strong calc back
Professor Kirby is an overall good instructor. She tends to make mistakes during problems, which can be confusing, but it's nothing too ridiculous. She always fixes the issue after someone points it out. Quizzes every week, and tests about every month. Keep up in class and you'll be fine.
This class wasn't too bad. The only grades are quizzes and 3 exams, along with the final which can be worth half your grade. As long as you keep up with the lectures and practice every week, the class is pretty easy.
Dr. Kirby was overall an okay professor. I taught most of the material to myself through her examples. The class consists of 3 tests, your quiz average, and the final which is 50% of your grade, so there is little room to mess up! If you keep practicing the material, you should do fine in this class.
There are weekly quizzes, usually about 12 questions. If you do the E-grade lab practice you will do well. 3 tests. All tests and quizzes are online so there is no partial credit. The lectures aren't bad. Only thing about her is she sometimes makes mistakes but always catches them (or someone points it out). I would recommend taking this professor.
Gives participation points through iclicker problems based on the last class lecture. Printing the notes helps as she fills them out in class with a lot of examples. You have to be self motivated and complete egrade for each section to study for the quiz or tests that you have every week. Ace tutoring sesh the night before the test helps. Loved her
Kirby is usually clear and explains things in an easy to follow manner. Clicking into class is required. Quizzes given every week. Be prepared to have a test or quiz on a weekly basis. Have to study to earn your grade. Would take this class again.
Kirby was a good professor. There are weekly quizzes which you MUST study for in order to get good grades on them. Studying is definitely essential to passing. Overall, she is very helpful and clear with what she expects. I would take her again!
I skipped 72% of the class so I was pretty much teaching myself the whole class. It's a math class and the notes are also posted online so you can teach yourself the material if you are dedicated. Got a high B+ and skipped a lot, but when i did go to class her notes were VERY HELPFUL.
Precalc is your typical FSU math class. Everything is on egrade and there is no extra credit. She's a decent lecturer, but if you go to her office hours she does a better job explaining concepts one on one. If you're good at math, you're fine. If not, you're gonna struggle
Dr. Kirby is a decent professor and is extremely organized. She knows what she's doing and is very helpful during office hours. However, it's up to you to keep up with the eGrade practices to do well on the weekly quizzes and exams. Make sure to attend lecture and practice the math problems frequently and you should be able to get a good grade.
Lectures were very straightforward and the type of problems that would be on the tests and quizzes were thoroughly discussed in class. She was very specific in her steps for going over examples and was very helpful. Class isn't exactly mandatory, but she did warm-up clicker questions that counted as a participation grade throughout the lecture.
Dr. Kirby is an average professor, she just wasn't necessarily my cup of tea. She makes so many mistakes when she is doing practice problems and the students have to correct her. She does iClicker for class attendance and it's for a grade. As far as the tests/quizzes go, as long as you practice on eGrade you'll be able to do fine.
Ok so if you're not good at math, expect to work hard and still probably get a bad grade. she goes the extra long way where it takes 45 minutes to complete 1 problem and then expects you to complete an EXTREMELY difficult test in an hour. NO TIME FOR QUIZZES, impossible to finish with amount of time given. GO TO TUTORZONE. attendance with iclicker
Had her for calc 2, and she was always more than willing to stop and take questions. She will go through the algebra in solving problems early on, but by mid semester, she expects you to be able to do it yourself. You should be comfortable with trig, but you can learn as you go. Very friendly and approachable.
Print out the notes before class, and write what she writes. Do egrade a few times before the quizzes and tests and you'll be perfectly fine.
Helpful professor if you go to office hours. Don't expect any curves, adjusted grading scale or extra credit. If you fall behind in the homework/practice you won't get as high a grade as you could have. Very "by the book" teacher. If math doesn't come easy you will need to do all the problems you can get your hands on. Either way prepare to work.
You are blessed if you get a chance to be in kirbys class there is no way to fail her class, so long as you do the web assign HW and take the notes she does in class. Very time consuming be prepared to study a lot of the problems. Only way to understand problems is by doing the practice problems she assigns.
I personally thought Kirby was amazing. She knows what she is doing and teaches really well. No lie there is A LOT of work, especially MyMathLab which will get so annoying, but it really boosts your grade so stay on track with it. If you are not good at math you'll most likely need to get help, but work for it and you can get the A no doubt.
Hated the class but wasn't her fault, she's a fine lady. If you're bad at math, you will struggle, if you're good at math then you won't. She was a pretty good teacher, clear explanations and accessible office hours. Everything is online so a lot of homework, weekly quizzes, tests...
This class is not an easy A, the homework sucks and the tests are hard, but if you come to class and do a ton of the practice tests and quizzes online you will get a good grade. I'm not very good at math and Dr. Kirby made the material easy to understand. Practice tests and quizzes are the key to success, do those and you will get a good grade.
No textbook but had to purchase an access code. Notes that were given in class were very useful for passing the quizzes and tests, definitely need to go to class unless you're a math genius. She often makes little mistakes when working out the problems during class and constantly needs to be corrected but besides that the material was clear.
Kirby is probably the best professor for calc 2, provides fill in notes online you can bring to class and explains everything so well. Homework is very doable and test are problems are from similar problems in book, easier than the webassign homework. Great teacher and very approachable.
Print out the notes before class, go to lecture, study a fair amount, and you'll do fine. I had a horrible calc 1 teacher and Dr. Kirby is so amazing in comparison. I only studied maybe 4-5 hours before each test and I got As on them. She's very straightforward and doesn't try to trick you. Recommend 100%.
Nice lady, but for the summer at least the homework was a ridiculous time consumer.
Dr. Kirby is a pretty good professor but her class is SO difficult. Most difficult class I've ever had honestly. Often times the homework is far more challenging than the exams & you spend more time trying to figure out how to do that one particular problem than actually learning. Dr. Kirby is sweet though. Dont be afraid to ask her for help
Best Calc professor I've had so far!!!
Insanely difficult tests that are much harder than homework problems. Extensive amount of work (8+ hours a week with the practice problems) which don't matter because they're nothing like the tests. Skips so many examples in class and tells us to watch a video on it. The examples she does are nothing like the tests. DON'T TAKE I'M BEGGING YOU
Hands down, the hardest class I've ever taken. I did everything I needed to do for the class, went to tutoring, office hours, and it wasn't enough to get past a D. Kirby is really sweet and cares about her students, but this is a really difficult class especially if you've never taken calculus before.
Dr. Kirby is the best math professor at FSU. The class isn't easy but you learn a lot if you put the effort in. She gives out extra credit two or three times throughout the semester. The tests cover what you learned in class and will even be the same examples she did in class.
Bottom-line: Dr. Kirby is a solid choice for a Calc 1 professor. I never had any exposure to calculus before and was able to get an A (with a lot of work). If you don't understand a concept she taught in class, she seemed more than willing to go over it with us during office hours. Also, if you don't understand a concept Youtube is amazing.
go on slader for all of the homework you don't understand. complete practice problems until you understand the homework. if you can do the homework you can pass the tests. tests are 85% including the final
Really clear notes and relatively fair test.. amazing teacher I would definitely take her class again
Okay I will admit I am not the best at math, but I worked my butt off to pass this class and still had to drop. My main issue with her teaching style is that she moves through the material at a rapid rate that I could not keep up with. She teaches from the perspective that everyone has taken calculus before, and I had never taken the class before.
She is the devil. Gives us a quiz the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break an says class the Monday before is VERY important???? Thanks but no thanks. Goes through things very quickly in class. If you haven't taken a calc class before don't bother with her you will not pass.
Great calc 1 teacher! HW heavy, but she goes over examples in class that help for completing homework. The examples from class and HW sets are very similar to questions seen on exams so you always know what to study and what to expect! She moves through material very quickly in class so come to class ready to go! Tests are 85% of final grade.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. Moves through notes so fast and assumes you've taken calculus before, so if you haven't I would not recommend taking her. Extremely homework heavy, sometimes you don't have time to study because of the amount of homework you need to do.
Take this class seriously, Kirby doesn't play. Pay attention in class, it helps a lot, as well as going to office hours. She's very nice & extra helpful during office hours. A lot of homework, but it's worth it because your test scores will increase by a lot! Take her, you won't regret it!!!
If you've never taken calculus before, do not take her. There is so much web assign work to complete that sometimes it's hard to actually study because of the sheer amount of hw you have. She's not the nicest person and she moves way too quickly. Don't take this professor with no prior calculus knowledge.
Get ready to drown in homework. She assigns 3 HW assignments per section, and we would go through 3-4 sections a week.
Good teacher! Very organized lectures and tests line up with material taught in class.
NEED background material for this class. Most of my friends and I all took AP Calc in HS and passed exam but retook it for college credit and this class was still very hard. She moves really quickly during class but does explain everything well. She did end up rounding my grade up to an A at the end when I was about a half point away.
If youre going on to calc 2 and up then take Kirby. Prior math knowledge will help big time. She doesnt play around. Shii ton of hw, do it as soon as you cover the material in class or youll fall behind. If you need any help on material go to her office hours ASAP. For us, she put a sizable curve on all 4 exams.
This class was really intense because there was so much homework and it was a very fast pace. However, she's one of the best math teachers ever. She is amazing at teaching and the class structure really helps you understand the material. She gives extra credit and her tests are very similar to the homework, so there are no tricks.
This class wouldn't have been too difficult if there wasn't soo much homework. I took this class with four other classes, including orgo, and felt like I was drowning. I think with a less busy schedule, it wouldn't have felt as overwhelming. She offers a fair amount of extra credit, curves the tests, and was generous with final letter grades.
One of the best math professors at FSU. She explains things well and never has you feel dumb. Gives extra credit for going to office hours and is so helpful! Lots of homework on Webassign, but the test problems were similar to hw/ notes exmaples. Curved tests. The class moves fast but she cares & wants you to learn.
Dr. Kirby is a very good teacher and makes sure that you understand the material. There is a lot of homework, but they are similar to the problems that will be on the tests, which make up 60% of your grade. You need to show up to class to understand the material, especially later in the course. If you put in the work, you will succeed.
She's a really good professor and actually cares enough to put effort into teaching the class. Super nice woman, super good teacher. I really liked this class and it was easy despite it being calculus. There's a lot of homework but the homework is basically exactly what the tests will be. If you can choose a specific teacher for calc 1 choose her
I took this as a Summer course and the amount of homework given is pretty ridiculous. She doesn't actually teach the class but makes you watch videos before to you teach yourself. With that, if you're not good at math you will struggle in this class. The tests are difficult, but if you do a bunch of practice tests it helps a lot. No extra credit :(
As a summer class, the amount of work put into it was insane. A TON OF HOMEWORK it was almost unnecessary. She doesn' t teach, she makes you watch videos and teach yourself which is very frustrating. The tests and quizzes are difficult but if you do practice tests it'll be fine. Your grade really is up to you and how well you can teach yourself
I was expecting this class to be hard considering what people have said about it... It's calculus. But the fact of the matter is that I feel completely unprepared doing the homeworks, and the prehomeworks. Class is a waste of time as the teacher only goes over 2 problems. Expected to watch videos before class. Meanwhile i have had A's in all math
In essence, I had to teach myself Calculus. Never in my life have I struggled in a math class, but this is just ridiculous. The material is not hard, but everything is overcomplicated and you have 0 time to sit down and learn the material. You complete one homework and have another right behind it. Expect to learn 4-5 lessons a week. Good luck...
Take this class with another professor if you can. Homework after homework every single day without having time to actually learn the information. Lectures are useless and only goes over a couple specific hw questions. Videos for the material are mostly taught by TAs/LAs that don't explain well or assume you took calculus in high school.
Literally AWFUL. If you have to take her online classes, itd probably be easier to wait for an in person one. The class time was useless, she went over examples that were sections ahead of what we were currently studying. You basically have to teach everything to yourself, and then just hope for the best in the tests and quizzes
I don't know if she struggles with teaching online or not, but this class is impossible. She grades her tests very harshly and does not teach. We go over 1-2 problems in an hour on zoom for a HW that would be due 2 weeks from that day, have about 6 HWs due weekly, and have no aid whatsoever on studying for tests. This class is hard as it is.
Ridiculous amounts of homework and pointless lectures. There were 5-6 assignments each week that could take hours each depending on the lesson. The lectures only went over a few homework assignments that weren't even from what we were currently working on.
Literally the worst class I've ever taken. The tests are basically impossible to do well on because the lectures are horrible. She gives like 10 assignments each week that you have to do but are worth barely any points. Most of your grade is from the tests which are almost never multiple choice and are graded very hard. Do not take this class.
These awful reviews are not true. The class itself is HARD and you have to work for your grade. There was lots of homework but there was extra credit on every homework assignment. You have to put in the work to learn and actually do well. I have an A in the class but I have worked really hard for it. Dr. Kirby is very caring and understanding.
Do not take this class during remote. I dont know what these reviews were before COVID but now, Kirby is terrible at teaching. This class was just a lack luster TA attempt of teaching(useless). Test have little amounts of questions that have topics you didnt cover. Only people doing good were people who already took Calc. I norm. get As in math
Take Dr. Kirby if you can. She is kind and fair and will give you the chance to earn extra credit, which will motivate you to keep on top of things. Her class is not difficult IF you learn your materials on your own. Class time is usually spent solving problems.
Dr. Kirby was nice and was very willing to help her students. The class was pretty hard and I barely scraped by with an A. There are lots of opportunities for extra credit. I took AP Calc in high school, got an A and passed the exam with a 4 and this class was still very hard.
You will have homework on WebAssign three days a week. She has a flipped class set up so you do notes ahead of time , and then go over homework in class. I had tests in person. She gives extra credit and her exams were fair even though there were seven of them. I am by no means a math person but she helped me understand very well. best choice
Kirby was such a great professor. If you struggle or have anxiety when you flunk your first test or think you're not doing well, JUST PUSH THROUGH. Honestly, she replaces the lowest test grade with the final. Also if you do the homework early, you'll get 10% more on each homework. So def do the homework early. As well as doing an extra discussion.
Dr. Kirby was one of the best math teachers I've ever had. She's there when you need help and everything is very clearly stated so you know what you're being tested on. Even though its a flipped classroom, she makes sure you understand the material.
By far one of the worse professors I have ever experienced. On top of making the already tricky course impossible and giving heavy unnecessary homework not based on the actual lectures, she made me feel incompetent when I went to her office hours when I was confused about the course material. I would never recommend her to someone for this course.
Basically all that matters is the test. Her lectures are not helpful I relied on my high school notes. Tests are not too hard but MAKE UPS ARE WAY HARDER. She is pretty unreasonable and aloof. Try a diff prof. Loads of homework all due friday at 8am and none of it corresponds with the lectures.
Dr. Kirby is an amazing professor. She is willing to help you in office hours and had helpful lectures. The tests are EXTREMELY similar to the hw and there were never any surprises. I've never considered myself to be one to enjoy math, but this class changed that completely, and it's neat to see how all the concepts are connected in this class
Great professor, she made learning calculus easy. I never took calc before and Id recommend her to anyone. Few extra credit opportunities and the tests werent bad at all if you do your work. Show ur work!! Homework every week, but again not bad. Lots of opportunities to do good in the class if you keep up with the work.
Professor Kirby might seem a bit scary at first. I was afraid to speak in that class, but after a while I realized she truly has a love for math. She explains the material quite well, and always answers questions in class. Doing the homeworks, quizzes, and going to her recitations are SO HELPFUL. DO THEM. Also, never miss those quizzes she gives.
Horrible professor. Doesn't take time to explain concepts, quizzes and hw aren't worth much- your grade relies on exam scores so if you have test anxiety run. Recitations are mandatory and don't help at all. Save yourself the stress and tears and take someone else
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! Attendance for her lectures and the recitation is mandatory. Her teaching style is so confusing and she makes everything so much more complicated than it needs to be. I had to teach everything to myself and Ive never put so much time and effort into a class for it to not pay off at all. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
This professor made this class so hard for no reason. She gives 4 tests and a final, where the tests are worth 75% of your grades. SO basically all the mandatory lectures and recitation, with the group assignments/ posters/ and homework does NOTHING for your grade. I got skoolers and that is is the only reason I started doing better on the tests.
Professor Kirby was just not a good professor. She expects you to come in with previous knowledge of calculus and runs the class at a very fast pace. She makes frequent mistakes during class and her lectures are almost impossible to follow. Your grade is very dependent on the tests and homework/projects will not help your grade at all.
Good lectures at the beginning of the year but they got worse as time went on
The class was super easy, the tests were based on all the Aleks homework.
This professor does not inform her students about the criteria of a test. EVEN THOUGH THE ANSWER ONLY ASKS FOR THE ANSWER... of you do one thing wrong in your work its an automatic zero.
Professor Kirby had clear lectures and made sure that everyone understood the material; however, she does make frequent mistakes throughout her lectures making it important to pay attention so that you don't get confused. You have modules that must be completed by a certain date on ALEKS but if you stay on top of it, the class should be easier.
Tests weren't bad but her homework was ridiculously difficult. Her lectures taught me nothing, had to use youtube to teach me everything. Switch to a different teacher, she is miserable.
Do not take this class. Tests are 75% of your grade and there's only 6 questions. Each question is graded from the work to the answer. So even if you get the right answer you will be marked off for not completing the work the way she sees fit. Also, the homework and lab poster sessions do nothing to help your grade. There are no curves or drops.
Goes very slow and in-depth into everything so would be good if it is your first time taking calc, however, for tests majority of the points deducted are for formatting and writing and not for the math itself or showing you understand the concept. There is homework every other day due but it is not difficult.
Lectures do not help and the tests are difficult
Kirby seems like a genuine person but the classes are large and she and her GA's can seem cold at times. The TA's are helpful. Recitations are annoying to attend but easy filler grades. If you know what you're doing the class will be easy but I understand that if your background isn't strong this class will be extremely difficult. LOTS of homework.
Terrible experience. Grades insanely hard and doesn't give partial credit. She assigns so much homework that is way more difficult than what we do in class. If you do the homework and do well nothing happens to your grade, but if you don't do it, it will destroy your grade. I like math but this was horrible.
Loved her, the class is hard no matter what but she teaches it really well and gives tons of notes and other resources to learn which made studying really easy, there is a lot of homework but she teaches you enough so that its basically just a review of what was taught in class. Would definitely take her again
I really liked her and she seemed to love what she was doing. The tests were graded quite hard tho. If you did any extra work not asked in the question, like drawing a graph to understand the concept, and it was wrong she would take points off your exam. The exam curves saved me
GET SKOOLERS. Only reason why I passed this class. You can do all the homework but the only thing that matters is the exams. If you don't do good on the exams you won't pass. GET SKOOLERS. It saved my grade and is the only reason I got an A.
Calc 1 honestly isnt that hard, but she explains things like it's rocket science. Got to the point where i couldn't follow lectures. ended up going to class for attendance and putting airpods in to watch khan academy. Tons of hw, gave up on it at the end and did very well on quizzes/tests/final so didnt matter. Ok professor, but khan's ur friend
SUPER test heavy. It becomes a point where you don't need to do the homework since the test weigh so much. Tough grader and exams are super hard
I love Kirby. She is absolutely amazing, but her class is nowhere near easy. Be ready to study the book and if you go to office hours then you will be fine. I highly recommend the Strozier late-night tutoring center. As long as you do all the homework and posters you can pass no problem
The amount of homework is absolutely ridiculous for a relatively easy class. Lecture notes do not help in any way, and simple problems are explained in the most complicated manner possible. Easy class but an unreal amount of busy work.
AMAZING professor. Doesn't expect previous calculus knowledge, always willing to work with you during office hours. Lectures are super helpful, paces the class well and always leaves time for questions. Attendance not mandatory but part of grade. Recitations have improved greatly. Tests and quizzes based on homework. Very easy to succeed in.
Massive point deductions on tests if you do not show the exact work the professor wants, even if you have the correct answers. Incorrect grading occurs often in the gradebook. The amount of homework is undoable, and prevents you from actually studying and understanding the material. This is an easy class made ridiculous, nothing positive to say.
Not my favorite class, but she's a good teacher and the LAs are very helpful. Her class isn't very hard to pass; I only failed because I'm a terrible test taker and there aren't very many assignments to buffer the effect of exams.
This class is not super hard but the homework is long and irritating. The tests and quizzes are all super easy compared. It felt that the homework was super difficult and lengthy, some took me 2+ hours. At a certain point, it counts for so little of your grade that I just stopped doing them. Other than that the class is fine.
If you're stuck with her for calc, you have to get Skoolers. Nothing she does in class is helpful in learning the material. The homework assignments take at least 2 hours each and you have multiple a week. She chooses the craziest questions for tests that she never shows in class - the only reason I did well is because of Skoolers.
In-class notes really aren't helpful, I learned everything myself through ALEKS. For each test/quiz there's a practice one given on ALEKS that has the same types of questions, so you can teach yourself how to do each question that'll be on the test, and they are pretty much identical to the test except for the final.
Lots of homework assignments, however they are weighted heavily so do them. Lecture assignments, so attendance is mandatory. Recitation can be hard for no reason. For quizzes, review homework. For test, review homework and review poster problems. Final replaces lowest test score.
I felt the content was taught well during the lectures. The homework is unnecessarily hard and time-consuming, but the test/quiz questions are always much easier and nicer to work through compared to the homework. Tests are graded harshly, but I managed to get some problems re-graded by going to office hours, so it's worth asking about them!
Shes really sweet and always eager to help. the labs are usually either quizzes or group work which makes it easy. sometimes she spends a lot of time going through problems but its also good cause it helps people understand better.
Kirby's teaching style confused me more when I asked for help. She would consistently get things wrong and have to go back and fix them on the notes. Skips over whole sections in the lecture guide and then goes back to them but it just makes everything more confusing. Takes whole lecture to do one problem. I do not recommend taking her.
Kirby was a pretty solid teacher. The whole course is done through ALEKS. ALEKS is a pretty good program for extra help, as its explanations are actually really good. Lectures are kind of stale and you have to go to them. Overall not a tough course and a pretty good teacher.
Dr. Kirby has mandatory attendance and is not very understanding of absences. The bulk of the course is on ALEKS so you basically teach yourself everything. Lots of homework weekly and many quizzes. Dr. Kirby treats her students like high schoolers and has little respect for them. Overall, you could definitely find a better teacher for MAC 1140.
I took Business Calc with her during the summer and tbh it was really hard and fast paced as expected. She wasn't a bad prof but one thing is she did make frequent mistakes. But other than that it wasn't bad. She explained things thoroughly and gave great examples.
This teacher was fantastic, her lectures were basically walking us through math problems and answering questions about different steps. We also got feedback on any concerns we had post-lecture. I highly recommend Dr. Kirby for MAC1105.
Professor Kirby is an amazing teacher, you can tell she knows what she's talking about and she's super helpful to all her students. She clearly outlines her grading criteria in the syllabus, and the lectures are actually super helpful. A lot of the classwork is on ALEKS, and there's extra-credit help sessions you can go to if you need more help.
Class is cake when you get the hang of it she ight
She was overall an okay professor. She is not very understanding of absences, so make sure you go to her class, but the class was super easy. Just do the ALEKS and you'll get it. The quizzes and tests are virtually the same as the practice ones so super easy to study for.
AMAZINGGG professor! Mrs. Kirby gives helpful lectures and explains any question you ask her. The quizzes and tests are exactly like the practices so if you do them you'll succeed in the class for sure. She gives attendance sheets but usually, your grade can afford a few absences. Def recommend for College Algebra
She did a good job explaining the lessons and offered many opportunities for help. She even offered extra credit if you went to help-sessions. Definitely wants her students to succeed. If you pay attention, go to class, and seek help when confused it will be a definite A. Quizzes make up a chunk, but tests are the biggest factor.
As soon as you get the hang of studying with ALEKS you will get an A or A- definitely. I really liked her. Could tell she cared about her students doing well.
Kirby is very thorough in her lectures, but tends to overexplain everything. College Algebra is easy in general if you paid some attention in high school. I don't like math and sometimes struggle with it and I got A's on every weekly quiz in the labs. As long as you attend most classes, you'll do well, but she also posts notes online.
She wants students to succeed, but sometimes her lectures are really boring and go on forever that it is hard to pay attention. I thought the class was easy, especially because the practice quizzes and tests are exactly the type of question on the real ones.
Her lectures are slow but very clear and easy to follow. She works through pretty much every problem type you'll see on the test multiple times during lectures. It isn't hard to keep up with the ALEKS assignments and they'll be your best study tool. She also offers help sessions (as do the TAs) that provide extra credit for attending!
Dr. Kirby is a good professor and she cares about her students. All homework, quizzes, and tests are on ALEKS which is very helpful because you know what to expect on exams when studying. There are 4 exams, including the final, and they are worth 72% of your grade, so its important to do well of them but she gives you the resources to do well.
The lectures are confusing and don't match to ALEKS. Tests and Quizzes are the majority grade. Class attendance is part of the grade. Her lecture is slow and boring.
lectures are confusing and her explanations don't make sense but if you spam practice quizzes night before quiz or exam and do the aleks homework an easy A class
Took this class in the spring. I felt like Dr. Kirby explained the material very well but attendance matters a lot, so you will fall behind a lot if you skip one lecture. Weekly quizzes are not too hard but you need to know the material well. Homeworks are high in quantity but manageable. Take advantage of office hours for sure.
Honestly she teaches really well and explains everything. Even during lectures she takes time to answer questions and make sure that everyone understands before moving on. She has these attendance sheets you fill out for each class that go towards your grade but if you're only missing a few classes, your grade will be fine.
Dr. Kirby gave clear expectations, was helpful and engaged with students, and covered the content well. There are three exams plus the final, but there are lots of (short) homework assignments and quizzes that help even out grades. She is simple and straightforward and I enjoy her class.
She teaches really well and explains everything clearly. She answers questions during lectures and makes sure everyone understands. The class is pretty easy if you've taken Algebra 2 in high school. She uses attendance sheets, but missing a few classes won't hurt your grade.
She's kind of slow in her lectures but takes things really carefully and definitely wants students to pass. Also go to all of the help sessions for extra credit, it's such a help when you're adding 200 points to the quiz section for boosting up your final grade a ton
Caring professor who wants to help her students succeed. She goes relatively slowly during most lectures, but it helps the large class understand and is an easy pace to follow. The class is very test heavy, but just practice on ALEKS before quizzes and tests and you'll be fine. She does attendance sheets but missing a few classes won't hurt much.
This professor is super sweet and teaches at a slow pace. There is a participation activity due everyday at the end of class. 1 quiz per week and are just like the reviews.
She taught clearly but was not the most approachable. It's an easy class, super passable, I just didn't like her attitude or the way that she spoke to her students. If you're going to attend a help session, I suggest going to a TA instead.
Dr. Kirby's expectations and outlines for her students were very clear and easy to understand. She uses ALEKS which shows all of the reviews and lessons that help on the weekly quizzes. Her lectures were descriptive and helpful as well.
