She is one special teacher! Although the course format is lecture based...which makes the class quite boring, her enthusiasm and squirrels luv will bring in some laughs! Very approachable, friendly, understanding Professor.
Well, she loves the squirrels, but I wouldn't know what to do if a squirrel ever ran up my pants. Classes are a little dull and the final exam is something not to really look foward to. By the way, her final is essay type questions.
I learned quite a lot in this course - more than I was expecting I would. Midterm essay required making a connection between a work of literature & a theory of social change discussed in course. Final essay exam was average difficulty. Recommend.
great!!
A pleasure to sit in her class.
She is the best prof ever, really easy marker, just talk about squirells and the sopranos
Good prof overall. A couple of readings were really really boring. One paper to write which was interesting and one final exam. Thought the final exam (essay answers to questions) was fairly difficult but prof was very approachable, friendly and helpful. Would recommend.
She is such a nice woman. She is an easy marker and loves what she does. She is there for her students and cares about them a lot. She repeats herself A LOT but she is worth taking. I strongly recommend her!
Amazing teacher no doubt!!!
Awesome Professor. Make sure you read up on the sopranos before you go to her classes.
Was an interesting class full of squirls. I learned a lot in this class and was very helpfull. It's an easy class if you keep up with the class and attend her lectures
squirrels, sopranos, and sociology:3 big S...very easy class only if u can stay awake during her lectures...very helpful...reapeats in her lecture what comes in exams...overall if u gotta then take this class.
A very fine professor and a wonderful person.
GIVES FINAL EXAM QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS TO YOU AHEAD OF TIME ! NEED I SAY MORE!??!?! OH AND THERE'S NO MIDTERM, JUST DO A REPORT.
If you're a serious student who wants a serious prof that you can learn from, avoid this class! She's a sweetheart but the class is pitched to the C students. Those who aready have a high GAP and like challenge will be seriously bored in her classes.
She is a very nice teacher. She loves her students and loves to answer any question that is on their minds. She is a very generous grader on papers, however, on the finals, she tends to get picky. Overall, she is one of the best Sociology professors there is.
Sopranos, Sopranos, Sopranos! This is all she talks about, including Wal-Mart and Squirells. she is amazing and very approachable. I have never met a woman like her before in my life.
very sweet lady, easy class, can buy class notes which she reads off of so not to worry to much if you've missed class, very helpfull. Do agree with one of the comments below though that you might get bored if you have a high GPA already.
Very nice lady, very boring class. Not very clear either.
love this proff, had her for two classes and will take anther with her anytime, helpful, fun and easy, though alot of reading
she's obsessed with the godfather and the sopranos. the class is a breeze but she grades harder on the assignments than expected.
Very nice teacher, very approachable, and one of the best at Concordia. She is one of the wisest teachers I have ever had and is not afraid to share her knowledge(even gives study notes so students dont get lost or confused with so many thinkers) is not out there to get you like some others....Just work and know your stuff. I strongly recommemd her
amazing prof. love her she is wonderful and kind. she is one of the best teachers at concordia and i would take her again.
AMAZING teacher. She's extremely nice and understanding. I love her to bits. Don't nobody abuse her niceness ok??? She's truly one of the BEST teachers I've ever had.
GREAT & AMAZING prof. She is the best at concordia. Very helpful, very approachable and friendly. Just know your stuff and you'll do good. I took her 3 times..lol..I wish to take her again in future. Highly recommended. She has all the good qualities that a teacher must have.
Excellent teacher who enjoys what she does and is interested in the well being of her students. She is very helpful.
BEST TEACHER TO DATE...I THINK SHE'LL BE HARD TO BEAT DURING MY TIME AT CONCORDIA! A+++++
Amazing teacher. Take the time to get to know this amazingly enthusiastic teacher, it will be worth your wild!
She is very nice and goes out of her way to help students. She is extremely bubbly which is not so bad, but many of her students become equally bubbly around her which is slightly nausiating but overall decent class. Would never say best class ever as many here have. Overall actually quite dull but due to subject matter more than prof.
Amazing teacher. One of the teachers that I know I will never forget for the rest of my life. Professional, Kind, Compassionate, Wise, Funny, and Caring. Says she teaches for the cohesion but I think is really because she has lots of love to give!!.. Love you Professor Penny if you ever read this!!
Really one of the best teachers in Concordia. I have never met a teacher which cared so much about its students, treated everyone with respect and made each one feel special. She even came to the final and asked each student individually if he or she had any difficulties. Amazing!
Amazing professor, couldn't have done classical theory with any other teacher. She really makes everything easy to understand and explain everything well. As long as you attend the class, you don't need a lot of time to review before the exam. Very nice person super friendly and helpful especially for a theory class.
best teacher ever! you would be crazy not to take her. I have never met someone who cares as much about teaching. Take your time and get to know her, its worth it!
3 words...BEST TEACHER EVER!!!
AWSOME TEACHER!!! REALLY HELPFUL AND EASY!!
Incredible teacher. Fosters your interest in the subject even if you have little. Relates subject to pop culture and recent events frequently. Flexible (only one mark off for turning a paper in a week late). Almost always in a contagiously good mood. Somehow the most fun and useful (I actually remember most of the material) class I've ever taken.
Penny may be the best teacher I have had so far. Sweet, available and fair, I had no interest in the subject but got an A. Great summer session teacher because she is flexible to her student's needs.
Penny entered the 1st class with a huge "hello my darlings, it's SO nice to see you!" which kinda threw me tbh! Dont be fooled! She's sweet, approachable, warm + helpful! Cares about students! Class notes, assignment details + final exam questions available from day 1 so NO excuses for not passing her course! Penny's awesome + VERY intelligent! A++
Nicest woman in the world!!! She is extremely helpful, and available when needed. Strongly recommend!
call her.. she loves it.
Best teacher ever!
What a lovely attitude this woman possess! She is cheerful and enthusiastic. You can tell she really loves teaching, which in turn makes me love attending. She even managed to lighten the mood of taking a final exam. Wow just fantastic. I hope to have her again. My only regret is not having her for socio 300.
By far the best teacher at concordia. Sweet, caring and very helpful.
shes the best teacher ever! her classes are fun :)
Penny is the sweetest professor I have ever had...I adore this woman.
Penny is just amazing!!! She is the best teacher I've had so far in Concordia. She's an easy grader, she's sweet and actually cares about her students success. TAKE HER :)
The best prof at Concordia by far. You will love her. She is extremely nice all the time, and always there for any questions/concerns. I couldn't ask for anymore.
People love her because she acts like students are her buddies (or "sweethearts") and always tells us we'll do fine. Lectures weren't very informative, but the readings were interesting. I'd rather have a serious prof who teaches me something during lectures, but it seems a lot of people here choose courses for their easiness.
At first, she seems like a very nice, approachable teacher. However, dont be fooled by her whiny feverish voice, she is actually the most hopelessly misleading prof i've ever encountered. She is very unclear with assignments and if she doesn't like you, will grade you with extra dilligence. Reading materials were often irrelevant and convoluted
This teacher is absolutely amazing. She is one of a kind at Concordia. She is kind, courteous, and lectures with a passion. If you take notes in her class and review, you are guaranteed an A. She is just wonderful!
Extremely nice. Very talkative. Very understanding teacher. 2 Exams (questions handed out before hand at all times). 2 take homes. Grades fairly/easy but if she likes you alot she will bump your grade up for sure.
Penn is a lovely person however she has students that she knows in the class to whom she gives a higher mark. My advise is for you to make your self known to her to get a better grade. I find this worrying that this should be the case in a university setting. I can see why students like her though...
This was my first time to take with Penny. I cannot believe myself that Penny is such a kind, approachable, and knowledgeable professor. She provided us her course notes which were relevant to assigned readings and final exams. She cared for students' success because she gave us study guide questions for final exam at the beginning! I do love her!
I do love Penny very much! Although Classical Social Theory sounds somewhat challenging, Penny tries to make this course interesting. Her assignments are reasonable, and her course notes are extremely helpful to both assignments and final examination. Also, she is a good grader because she loves to encourage her students. I got an A+ in the end!
Simply, the best teacher I ever had. She literally hands out her exams in advance!
Amazing teacher, this is my 3rd class with this teacher, very down to earth , treats you with respect
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!she gives you everything the first class, including the questions on your final. she is really nice, approachable, and is not a hard marker. u cant d soci 300 without Penny!
She's really friendly! She jokes around a lot, uses personal examples, an easy-grader, course notes available at the digital store, study guide matches exams word for word, doesn't take attendance. Class is a little dry sometimes, not much for class/group discussions.
Fantastic teacher, why can't more teachers at Concordia be like her? Very down to earth, realistic and always available to accomodate students. it was a pleasure attending all her classes.
This was my third time taking with Penny. Penny is very knowledgeable, approachable, caring, and patient. She is not very strict with the deadline for work submission. She gives the study guide questions at the beginning of the semester, so her final exam is a piece of cake. Her course notes are also helpful to the final exam. Overall, I got an A+!
Nice prof, gave great notes, and coherent lectures. She likes to get to know her students, so make yourself known otherwise she will probably give a grade lower than deserved. Overall the class was good.
AMAZING PROF!! she is so full of life it is unbelievable. Gives extensions on assignments that are handed out a month in advance. she makes it worth going to class just by how helpful she is. I would def recommend her for all courses that she offers in Concordia. You have to put in the work to get an A but she is a really lenient marker.
she is a really nice teacher... gave us extra time on both our take home essays. very understanding as well.
Yes she is full of live and does give extent due dates for papers. However, there is no class discussions and no historical context brought into the sociologist lives just their theories, which makes it difficult to understand where they are coming from. Also she has people she favors in the class who she gives higher grades too..
Penny is one of my favorite professor at Concordia University. As a professor, she is patient, knowledgeable, approachable, and flexible. I took four courses with her, and I did very well on all of them. As a 400-level course, this one could be somewhat demanding and challenging, but she still managed to make it interesting. Overall, I got an A+!
if you want to do well get to know her and you get a better grade... which is worrying for university standards
OK she is nice.... but is really bad at getting back to people via email... classes are dull and like others have said she has people she knows in her class who get better marks..I was asked to proof read a class mates work, which miss out a lot detail for an assignment and she got an A+...just find that this attitude is unacceptable in a Uni.
I really did not like this class. Penny just lectures and there is no class interaction. You have to interpret the theorist ideas as the Penny does...there is no room to think critically for your self. I know others love her but for me the class was dull and did not give me room to grow in terms of sociological thinking
This class for me was just about the professor lecturing and simple memorizing information and not trying to understand where the theorist were coming from and thinking about and analyizing their work
I tried to contact this proff by email lots of times as well as by phone and she never returned any of my questions... which was only one which I kept repeating.. I know that lots of people said she is helpful face to face but if you do nt have time to be hanging around her office it is impossible to get her to respond xxx
AMAZING teacher, to be honest i didn expect any teacher to b this sweet here in concordia but WOWW.. I love her ... shes soo cute and she enjoys her work. Though at times she tells irrelevant stories but its fun to know all of it! HIGHLYY RECOMMENDED! - little problem, shes hard to get through emails but dont worry :)shes very helpful!
Penny is the kind of professor you can tell loves what she does and she is always more than willing to help each and every student. She is funny and a little bit unorthodox but make yourself known to her and I guarantee this class will be a breeze for you. Don't let the 50% paper/50% final stress you out because she will make sure you pass.
Penny is so sweet and so helpful! She just loves what she does. She can be a little bizarre at times but talk to her, let her know who you are and you are sure to do well.
Penny is awesome! There is really nothing else to it.
Amazing Prof. Interesting class learn a lot through her lectures. Easy marker.
Penny made this course extremely challenging. Many students had hard time understanding the course material, so they applied for late completion of their work. Yes, Penny is nice, patient, friendly, and approachable. However, she seemed overwhelmed by teaching this course. Also, she graded unfairly. Overall, I was disappointed taking with her.
Since Penny had many favorite students in this class, it is not surprising that she graded quite unfairly. She did not handle this course professionally, including course content and assignments. She also failed to follow the course outline very well. Taking everything into account, I was frustrated. I would never take any other course with Penny!
Penny is super sweet. She is a nice change from your typically university professor. Very understanding and accommodating.
Class was super easy and her lectures and lecture notes are really all you need. Seriously, I wouldn't even bother getting the coursepack. She gives you all the info you need in her lectures.
She is such a sweet teacher and wants to help all students. She tries to make classes enjoyable and she shows movies. She puts all her class notes in the back of the textbook. I highly recommend her for any class. Her assignments are fun and there is not an overwhelming amount of assignments to do. she loves telling stories.
I took Penney three times and I love her!! She is very nice, easy class!!! I think its impossible to fail unless you put zero effort into it. She gives you the questions in advance for the final, so it gives you time to be prepared. She will help you if you need help.
very easy going teacher, and flexible with late assignments. our grades depended on the midterm (50%) and 50% on the final. however both were easy and she is an easy marker. fun teacher and a little quirky. would recommend taking any class of hers.
Penny makes going to school worthwhile. She is caring, intelligent and friendly. If you pay attention, her material and teaching will help you become a better person.
Penny is a natural storyteller and provides a biographical backdrop of the classical theorists, bringing them to life. She ties everything together, facilitating what could be considered dense material. This may be what leads people to believe she is an easy marker, when in fact, they're doing well because of her memorable lectures.
Penny is the best
Although going to class is pretty much pointless, she is one of the nicest teachers i've ever had. There was only a term paper, which she basically allowed you to hand it whenever you wanted, and a final exam which she gives you a study guide for. The review class and class overall is pointless to attend, but she will help you any way she can.
Penny is AWESOME! I have taken at least 3-5 classes with her and never got anything under an A. In most of her classes she provides you with the notes and final exam questions day 1. So its not necessary to go to class. Always there to help and very flexible on deadlines which is great for any student. If you have the chance take her!
Penny was very flexible with assignments and understands that other things are going on outside of school and homework. While her lectures seemed long and sometimes she went off topic her notes she hands out give you a clear understanding of all the readings and information you need to know. Absolutely loved her and would take her again.
I LOVE PENNEY:) she is the sweetest soul at Concordia. honestly NEVER came across such a sweet professor who cares a lot about her students. she tries to make her classes easy and she's very lenient. If i could i would take her for ALLL my classes. She is the easiest and nicest teacher. Her classes are entertaining and she always puts a smile
fun teacher, not the most stimulating lectures, but she is a great teacher, i learned a lot and got a good mark which i feel i deserved.
It was the first time I have taken her and she is a great teacher! She is so lovely and funny! She tends to talk a lot during her lectures and a little fast. Her teaching methods is still a little difficult for me. She is very open to helping students. Her offers a lot of tutorials. I would take her again for any theory class.
Penny is the best! take her class and you wont regret it! The most understanding and approachable teacher i have ever had! Her class is interesting, and she also gives you a copy of her own notes which are super helpful for the preparation of exams!
The course content was interesting and useful and Prof Pasdermajian makes lots of jokes. I also felt that she was very engaged with the students and genuinely wanted us to succeed. At times her stories can get quite off topic but she makes sure you are prepared for the final
Penney is the sweetest, and I mean the SWEETEST Prof I have ever come across at Concordia! She truly wants ALL her students to do well. She provides review sessions for the midterm + final in which she is incredibly helpful for. Make sure you follow her instructions and express understanding from her required readings and you will do just fine!
She despises technology, so she doesn't put anything online. She makes the material relatable by comparing it to popular tv shows and although she may come off as an airhead at first, she definitely is an expert in sociology. She's adorable.
She is very sweet and puts smiles on her students' faces. It was unfortunate that some of her teaching styles were unfit for a university level classroom; it was hard to learn content because she was focused on the context. She is full of energy, but she often got sidetracked by irrelevant topics which made it even harder to learn the material.
the SWEETEST most thoughtful women i've ever had as a prof. She is the cutest thing in the world. Penny is so caring, and very accessible. She prefers you text her via email so she can answer you faster and always makes sure to include a ":D" in her texts. Truly an amazing professor, would definitely take again
She gets sidetracked quite a lot in class and has clear favorite. The class is 50% midterm paper and 50% final, and she only corrected the midterm paper a week before the final exam.
As a person, she seems very nice and sweet. As a teacher, she is very confusing. She doesnt clearly explain her expectations, spends the entire class monologing and doesnt post anything online. There are 2 elements of evaluation, a paper and an exam. Her comments on my paper dont justify the grade I got and many students were unhappy with theirs
Penney is an amazing teacher. If you are willing to do your part, you will get an A very easily. she is fun and sweet, i guess the people commenting that she is awful did't do what they had to do. a lot of people skip class and pretend to get good grades. she goes over all the material and specifies what she wants.
She's nice but her lectures are so scattered. She spoke about the actual material for about half the class the rest was about whatever was on her mind that day. Although I went to every class I think it's possible to pass by reading her notes on the readings in the Coursepack. One essay worth 50% given back a week before the final.
Interesting topics, but she made it really hard to keep your interest in class (3 hour long lectures). She talks the whole time, no discussion so you have no choice but to sit there and listen, or don't show up. Take-home midterm paper; choose 2 questions out of 4, write 3-5 pages each question. Final: study 11 questions , she gives 5 to answer.
Very kind teacher. She tends to ramble on sometimes in her lectures but gives personal anecdotes and relates to tv shows to make it more interesting. overall easy class with not much work (got B+ on 50% assignment that took maybe 3 hours) but if you like a more traditional, organized teacher she is not for everyone.
Great teacher. If you attend class, do the readings you will do great. Her exam/assignments are SO fair. She is also very approachable. Not sure how people could dislike her...
She's amazing! Don't skip class because everything she says is important for the take home exam and the final. If you listen and take good notes you'll ace the course. She's very sweet, she cares a lot about her students, if ever you have a problem you can talk to her.
Honestly, professor Penny is so nice and so approachable. She really cares and if you attend class and understand the notes from the text book you will do well. The only thing is, its kind of hard to focus because its just her taking the whole time and no powerpoints also, only two things for marks.
The thing with Penny's that she has 50% midterm and 50% final, spends the whole class time talking which makes it so hard to focus, even tho she knows the topic, but just not interesting. I studied the course by myself because of that but whenever I had questions she would be more than willing to explain. Does exam reviews which helped.
she's nice and very approachable. the readings are massively long ngl. It's a very casual class so if you're the type who likes having a clear grading criteria and need constant discipline i wouldnt suggest this class. the prof may be quirky and obsessed w/ squirrels, but shes a great prof and the sociologists she covers are the icons of the field
Expect her lectures to be about squirrels 20% of the time, 30% a life anecdote more or less related to a sociology concept and 50% regurgitating the notes already in the course pack. Pro: 2 50% essays. Attendance not mandatory Con: VERY subjective grading and no grading rubric. I have a good attention span but its hard to focus in that class
Professor Penny is a sweet human being, yet her lectures were usually boring. She talks a lot about stories from her life, that take up 2 out of 3 hours of the lectures. Not many people show up for her class. The only thing is that shes super chill and you only need to write 1 essay as a midterm and then exam.
Honestly, she is a sweetheart. The material itself is easy to understand and there are only two papers to write. One for the midterm (50%) and the final (50%). As one of students mentioned here, she is very subjective when grading and there are NO clear grading criteria. She doesn't even explain what she expects out of the papers either.
This is my second time taking Professor Penny and honestly, Prof Penny is a real gem. She is the sweetest professor I've ever had. Yeah her lectures are long and the readings are a lot, but she is the most understanding prof I've come across Concordia. She doesn't rush you, she's very passionate about her work. Honestly love her so much. Take her!!
Penny is a sweetheart. She is very knowledgeable about material culture and her lectures were always interesting. The course only has two take-home assignments (worth 50% each) and Penny was very flexible with due dates. Because 441 is a seminar, there was a lot of reading, but the content itself was super interesting.
Professor Pasdermajian is kind and caring. However, her lectures tend to be very long and boring. She often talks about squirrels. The assigned readings were dense and heavy, but she goes over them to correct any misunderstandings. She is approachable and encourages students to contact her if they need help with their assignments.
Penny is so sweet and nice to her students! Her lectures were pre-recorded 95% of the time during the semester. We only had 2 assignments; 1 mid-term paper and 1 final paper, each worth 50%. I would've liked to have rubrics for the assignments but there weren't any. I would take one of her classes again because of how comprehensive she is.
Great teacher, I had her for 2 classes. She is a great person and she is an excellent knowledgeable teacher. She is extremely nice and understanding with her students. Looking forward to taking another class with her in the future as they allow you to learn without burdening our busy and complicated student lives, especially during covid.
Professor P is by far the best professor I have ever had since I started at Concordia four years ago. She is passionate about her field of knowledge and she explains things (like theories) incredibly well. She is also sweet, approachable and incredibly accommodating when it comes to anything. I love her and I would write more on her if I could!
I took many of her classes and every class was great. She is a very caring woman and truly helps you with anything you need. I would recommend any of her classes to anyone. Just a great person.
Sweet prof but lectures can be a waste of time. Probably 30-45 minutes are useful; the rest is regurgitated stories. She can be a bit critical of ppl's choices about their bodies (meds, weed, plastic surgery etc) Buy the coursepack! Most reading's aren't online. Overall decent class but not super interesting & I didn't learn much but oh well :/
Like most 300-lvl Soci classes there were a lot of readings.I only read the readings I ended up choosing for my essays nothing else, there were only 2 essays. Not a tough grader, and I got a good grade without ever going to her class since she mostly rambles. Overall great person and a helpful teacher. The textbook is expensive tho. Took SOCI375 too
She doesn't use ppt, only lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory. Had her for SOCI 441 and SOCI 342, she gave us take-home essays (50% each), where you answer two questions with 4-5 pages each (you can choose the questions). Might seem intimidating but it's manageable if you stay on top of the readings and take good notes. Easy grader.
This prof is actually so sweet. She is a bit all over the place tho. I highly recommend.
